These two best friends are about to make the [music] worst decision of their lives while officers try to usher a lost dog off the highway. Kohl's loss prevention called 911 dispatch describing two men who were loading up a basket with no regard to sizes or prices. One friend peeled [music] off, presumably to bring up the getaway vehicle, while loss prevention alerted police that the basket now contained close to $2,000 worth of merchandise, a state [music] felony in Minnesota. By the time the thieves made their move, [music] two squad cars were already moving in for the arrest, but no one knew how quickly the situation [music] would spin out of control with tragic consequences. >> I got the radio. >> Stop. I'm a [ __ ] monster, >> The shooter and carjacker, later identified as 27-year-old Dominic Coke of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the evidence receipt, his five-chamber revolver was recovered with three rounds still in the chamber along with two casings. According to court documents, Dominic had a long criminal history related to methamphetamine. However, during an interrogation, Dominic's friend of 15 years, 26-year-old Joseph Heraf, who also had an extensive criminal history related to meth, denied having used that day. However, [music] he admitted to being the driver of the original getaway vehicle and that Dominic initiated the carjacking after the Jeep was disabled. Joseph was charged with first-degree aggravated robbery and fleeing a peace officer. His bail was set at $500,000 and several months later, Joseph pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated robbery in exchange for dropping the charge of fleeing a peace officer. He was ordered to pay the city of Blaine over [music] $13,000 in restitution and was ordered to serve 15 years on supervised probation. >> I would do better, bro. I don't know how much time I got to do, but I had to do it anyway, don't you know? Just take care of your kids, man. >> Court records indicate [music] that Joseph did not make good on his promises to Dominic or the state. His probation was revoked in 2023 after a drug violation and he was committed to the Minnesota Department of Corrections to serve the remainder of his sentence, potentially until 2032. Officers drove K9 Bravo nearly 40 miles to the nearest vet hospital where he walked in on his own. Bravo was found to have sustained a single gunshot wound through his throat, damaging his trachea and vertebrae, and exiting his shoulder. Veterinarians stabilized [music] him and then transported him to the University of Minnesota for further treatment. Three days later, Bravo was discharged [music] and allowed to recuperate at home, and 3 months after that, he returned to work. The next year, Bravo received the USPCA National Patrol Case of the Year for his actions. However, he never fully recovered from his wound, and on July 17th, 2022, Bravo worked his final shift as a canine officer for Anoka. He spent the next 2 and 1/2 years of retirement in comfort and peace before [music] passing away in January 2025. The city of Anoka commissioned a bronze statue in his honor, where it will stand in the newly renamed Bravo Park. >> I'm now elated to say his legacy will now be a staple of the community. For a small number of us, it doesn't require a monument to recall all he did for us. However, I hope this everlasting monument will recognize the impact he made here in such a short time on Earth. Whether while you're here today to see Bravo's monument or if you visit his monument in its final place at Bravo Park, I hope you're provided with the same feelings of strength and love that he provided me. Thank you.
