Shots fired. Shots fired. Just north of a racetrack. I'm not sure exactly where. I'm outside of my car. She started firing at me from in the backseat. >> Get out of the car. Get on the ground. OUT OF THE CAR. ON THE GROUND. ON THE GROUND. On June 23rd, a routine traffic stop for a blown stop sign turned into a deputy's worst nightmare. What started as a simple case of a driver hiding her true identity quickly turned into a life or death struggle. The suspect initially played [music] the cooperative citizen card, but the officer's gut told him something was off. Little did he know, he wasn't just dealing with a suspended license. He was transporting a ticking time bomb armed with a hidden weapon. [music] What are you doing? Why don't you pull over right away? Oh, because I'm at the house and so I just wanted to like, you know, it's cuz we're already here. >> Okay. Do you have a driver's license on you? Uh, yes, sir. Is it valid or is it Yes, sir. Yes, sir. >> No, those are I'm not very good at seeing. What's your first name? Briana. Whose car is this? Uh, this is my co-signer. Uh, my co- Who's it registered to? Uh, Bailey. Rensford Bailey. Bailey? Yes, Rensford Bailey. Yes. It's not reported stolen or anything? No, no, sir. No, sir. Everything's paid off. Everything's paid off. It's full. Everything is Can you do me a favor and just get out of the car and come right here? Is there a Well, I was ex- Excuse me. It's okay. Yeah, cuz I'm telling you to. Okay. Yeah, sure. Is it What What was the reason I was stopped again? Could my pops come out maybe? Well, have you step back. I'm going to explain to you the reason. And I had to just You're good. Just come on right back here. My bad. Just right back here. I'm going to have you give me your information. You don't really look like the person on the driver's license. Spell your first name for me. For me, it has been a while. Spell your first name for me. B R I A N A. Spell your last name. M A S O N. Can I see this for a sec? My phone? >> Yeah. To look at the picture? Well, I mean I could I could maybe like send it I don't like give consent to the phone. I would just rather not. I'm trying to look at the picture. Yeah, no problem. Yeah, you can you can look at the picture and see. it? don't even have the same color eyes as the girl in that picture. That's makeup. All I know is around the makeup. Okay. Go ahead. Go and put this down. Put this down. You'll be in the car right now. Put the phone down. Put the phone down. Put the phone down. And put your hands behind your back for now. You'll be detained. Yeah, cuz you're not being truthful about who you are. But what what was the reason of the original? The reason for the original stop because you made a faulty stop on the at that stop sign and because as you were proceeding through the first stop sign that I seen you coming head-on with me, you were not in your lane. You were partway over the lane. Do you have any weapons on you? Guns, knives? No, sir. All right, I'm going to pat you down. Go ahead and tuck your elbows up. Oh, sir. Sir, I'm I'm so confused right now. The deputy immediately caught her in a web of lies when she handed over a best [music] friend's ID. It was clear her last brain cell was beyond struggling as she blamed eyeliner for the discrepancy. Even as she was being detained, she tried to [music] act confused, but her performance was Oscar-worthy in all the wrong ways. She was [music] definitely hiding something much heavier than just a fake name. Let go of them. I mean, it's on my brain. It's actually like probably because I was actually trying to I'm going to read you something before I talk to you cuz you're in handcuffs and you're sitting in the back of my car right now. How I know you're not Breanna Mason? Because I pulled over Breanna Mason 4 days ago. So, are you going to give me your real name or are we going to have to take you to the jail and figure out who you are? Yes, sir. My real name is uh Go ahead. R H E A N A. What's your last name? Harden, H A R D E N. Why did you give me her name instead of your name? Do you have a warrant? No, I don't have any warrants. >> Are you suspended? I'm This is I'm on the very edge of I almost have everything like paid off everything and it's really it's like right there on the edge. I have court July 8th. You know what I'm saying? So, you gave me a fake name because you were suspended? Really? Does that seem like a logical thing to do? >> Well, it wasn't like a it wasn't that smart of a lie. So, why did you give me a fake name then? It's not She She That's my best friend. I picked her up from like work. That's just all that it is. Like I just I'm trying to Why would you give your best friend's ID in place of just identifying yourself? So, it's because it's suspended. I don't know. I don't want it completely canceled and >> How many times have you ever been Have you ever been arrested for driving with a suspended license? I just got out of prison and I've been doing so much better. I've been working three different jobs and you know, I paid off the whole of this vehicle. I've just been doing really I've just found the right path and I just came into town She's suspended. She gave me a fake name. She gave me a name so when I pulled her over three days ago, it's not her. Yeah. Do you have any drugs on your person whether they belong to you or not that I'm about cuz I'm What am I going to do? Stand up. Stand up. I'm about to have to go through your pockets, okay? Do you have any drugs on your person? No. No? Okay. What kind of drugs are we talking? Fentanyl? Meth? Are there any needles on you? No, I don't I I really piss me off to get stuck. I really don't shoot. I don't I don't >> Okay. Might be a few meth straws. I got you. That's what happens when you work on your car. No, I'm being the racist. You can look wherever you I mean, whatever you I'm I'm actually putting calipers and brakes on on my car. The truth finally started to leak out just like her criminal history. She admitted to being a recent prison guest while claiming she was working three jobs. The deputy wasn't buying the reformed citizen act, [music] especially after pulling bags of crystal meth from her pockets. She even tried to claim a dental pick was for hygiene as if we don't know what those are actually used for in her circles. Hey, don't [ __ ] me. What's with the dental pick cuz I saw that in somebody else's ear. >> It happened though. I don't know what they're for. What are they for? >> No, that's really for like dental like I have No. No. Ah, you can sit down. Ah, you can sit down. No, I'm I'm dead serious. And so like that that alone is for because I have a tongue piercing and so like I'll periodically clean it off like Mhm. So, you put your dental pick in the same pocket your clean dental pick in the same pocket? I just want to know about the the pick. Bro, that's a lot. How long you been in the car? I've been sitting here, bro. I've been in the car, bro. No way. You were not here the whole time. >> I'm a four guy, bro. We didn't do nothing wrong. That's wild. That's wild. That's terrifying. That is terrifying. Do me a favor, hop out of the car, my man. You got any guns, knives on you? >> All right, man. Stand up. Stand up. You got anything on you? No, sir. I just said no, man. I'm going to check your pockets, all right? He said no, too, and we found a [ __ ] ton of meth, so like realistically, what's not act like it's crazy. Go ahead, bro. Go ahead. All I got is the beads and my bracelet in my pocket. That's it, that's it, bro. Can I please give my dad a tissue? Hang tight. No, no. Can I give my dad a tissue? I just said hang tight. All right, bro. Hey, let's bring him over here on on that side. Come here. Oh my god, dog. Dog, what the [ __ ] Come over here. Oh, you don't need for any of that. >> My dad? Right here, right here. Bro. As of right now, you're not in trouble, like just trying to figure out what's going on. What's your first name? Josh. I literally need to get out of the car, bro. I woke up to you talking to me in the car, bro. What did I do wrong, bro? Y'all think I'm lying? The plot thickened when the deputies realized her boyfriend had been playing hide-and-seek in the car the entire time. That poor passenger dude probably had a wild realization that his girlfriend was a lot more dangerous than he thought. While the officers were distracted by the surprised guest, the suspect was busy slipping her cuffs and covering the camera with her hat in the car. Why you sitting way over there? Because I was trying to get the air. Got you. Okay. It was really hot. Um sir, sir, so please, please, please, cuz I I I'm serious, I really don't, you know, I really do I work legit jobs. I work three different jobs, you know, I I really do make a honest living. I came to everything dressed. >> Okay. All right. Come here. Come here. Right now. Bring your hand around to the front. Straighten out. >> Turn around. Come over here real quick. Watch her. She slipped on the cuffs. I opened the door right as she's putting something in the backseat. You know, then it doesn't even matter. I'm going to search you again at the jail. Go ahead. What are you doing? I'm just trying I'm I'm I'm sorry. I'm very I'm very nervous. So, I can have the Get in. The phone [ __ ] >> [music] [music] >> The situation turned deadly when she actually opened fire through the partition while a song played in the background. This is a cop's worst fear coming to life because of a missed search. [music] The deputy scrambled out of the car, narrowingly escaping a fatal shot. It was a terrifying reminder that everyone should be searched prior to being put in a cruiser, regardless of how nice they seem to be at first. 6671 shots fired shots fired just north of a racetrack. I'm not sure exactly where. I'm outside of my car. She started firing at me from in the backseat. I don't think I'm injured. I'm not sure about her. She's still in the car. Marion, looks like I'm right across from the Royal Inn on the east side of the road. I'm behind my vehicle to the right. I had a concrete barrier. Behind vehicle to the right. >> What's that? Is he signal zero? She's signal zero. Where's your car at? On 526, I have a shield if you need it. Back there? I got you. You want to go up with a shield? No, we have her come to us. I don't think we know. I don't think she was IDing herself. >> Yeah, she don't she refused to give it. All right. Keep your hands out. I'll lock the door. All right. Keep your hands up. Come out. Get out of the car. Get on the ground. Out of the car. ON THE GROUND. ON THE GROUND. On the ground. Get on the ground now. On your stomach. Right here. Right here. On this side. No, it's the glass. Oh. Where's the gun [music] at? Right here. Look at it. Right there. Did you shoot yourself and you hurt it on your arm? Uh yeah, he's in my back. Back of the shoulder? Which side? Your right arm, right? My right. I believe I'm not sure. I might have just got grazed. I'm not sure. Did you try to shoot yourself up there? Got you. Okay. No, no, no. It looks like it's just a scratch. Looks like it doesn't No, it doesn't look like there's a hole in it. Let's get her like up on the actual You want to roll over and sit up on the curb? Yeah, medics are should be 51. Once medics get her over here, we need to transport her. Am I I don't I don't know where my leg is. I don't I don't I don't know where my leg Come on. Lean your face up. Yes, sir. I'm in ants. Um do you all mind if I No. Yeah, sorry. You're certain it's not again? Yes, sir. I think she's been patted down by a a guy. If if you could pat her down, I'd appreciate it. She's going to pat you down now. You're going to come over here right to this where this wall is. Spread your feet and lean forward. Lean your chest against that. She has I don't think it's a gunshot wound to her back. She has maybe a graze wound on her back shoulder. We lifted her shirt up. Yeah, it was in it was in here when we lifted her shirt up. That's why I think it's graze wound cuz it's not But there is a Chris. But we think there's blood inside the back of the car, so that's why we're confused what we're looking at. She looked drugged out and completely mapped [music] out, likely fueled by the meth found earlier. A female officer finally stepped in to do the search that should have happened at the start. [music] It's frustrating to see such a massive safety failure. She was lucky she didn't end up dead, and the officer was even luckier she was a terrible shot. I totally messed up. I said listen, she had a gun where you can't check." >> check. She was able to get it out while he was in the in the backseat. >> So, here here here's the deal. I'm trying to figure in my mind what is her what is her thought process because she's locked in. I think she's on meth. She's She's meth'd out. She brought out. You can't get out. >> No. What actually have him open that up as well to see what's inside that. >> I do have extra larges, too. Okay, can you do Picture that, please. Yeah. Where were you at? You can move that, yeah. That pills? Those are pills. I got some pills. That's some more meth. Yeah, you can just leave it right there and then or you can leave it there if you want. That way I can just photograph it. What was in there? Appreciate it. There's meth there, there's meth there, and we got pills over there. This case served as a chilling example of why procedural safety can never be overlooked as the suspects we least expect often carry the most danger. Riah Diane Harden's attempt to end an officer's life showed [music] a complete detachment from reality. Thankfully, the only thing that actually died that day was her chance of seeing the outside world for several decades. Riana Diane Harden pleaded no contest to the second-degree attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. [music] Given the severity of her actions and her previous criminal record, the judge didn't hold back, sentencing her to 40 years in prison. The officer suffered a graze wound to his right cheek, but thankfully survived the attack without more serious injuries. According to later statements, she claimed she was upset about the officer's loud music and even said [music] a prayer before firing the shot.
