I wouldn't bring your baby out in the cold. I'd leave him in the car. >> Yeah, you can leave [Music] >> Okay. Okay. I need to see your license. >> I have my purse on. >> Okay. Let's go inside. >> I just my husband. >> So, you're running at Target? >> I know. But I ran in to check if they had wrapping paper. Ran back out to check on him. Called my husband, told him what wrapping paper there was. Ran back out and then I told him what, you know, like he was trying to figure out the inches of wrapping paper or whatever. And that was >> on December 19th, 2022, officers rolled up to a shopping mall parking lot after reports of an infant left alone in a running vehicle. What should have been a quick shopping errand morphed into a soap opera of excuses, contradictions, and deja vu. Watch the video to know what actually >> are are you the owner? >> Yeah. >> So, is it okay that we leave the baby in the back seat? I was just running to see if I could get wrapping paper and then I was going to pick up. So >> So you thought it would be a good idea to leave your infant child be a good idea. >> So and how long have you been in the store? >> Uh like 5 minutes. >> So I've had someone sitting out here for over 30 minutes saying that you've been here 30 minutes with car running. >> I'm not out here for 30 minutes. Okay. Can I see your license? >> Yeah. >> Don't bring your baby out in the car. I wouldn't bring your baby out in the cold. I'd leave him in the car. >> Yeah, you can leave >> Okay. Okay. >> I need to see your license. >> I have my purse on. >> Okay. Let's go inside. >> I just have my >> So So what did what did they say after? She said that they entered the store about 12:43. Uh car was parked out front. Baby was in the back still running. They exited shopping and still there. That's what well over well over 30 minutes. >> And I also ran back. >> But again, the issue is it's leaving a brand new baby by itself in a running car. Your your doors were unlocked. Someone could have walked up, opened that front door, and drove. >> I was right. Yeah, I know. But I was watching. I ran out. What would you be able to do if someone got in your car, took your baby, right off? >> That's it's a it's a that's an issue. >> So, it's not like I was I know, but I have you ever done this before? >> One other time, but once I was going to get my I was just going to pay for like get park car and then pay for the wood. Oh, I didn't I cuz I literally was just going to park every things going on. >> I'm trying to know, right? You're in fire lane. You left your vehicle running, which we don't allow in our list because people steal cars. Okay. Left your child unattended in a car. And it sounded like you had a question if you were free to go. No, that's a crime. what you're supposed what you did. Those are all criminal issues. So, you know, honesty is usually the best policy. >> And I'm being honest, >> but you said 5 minutes. That's not even close to honest >> cuz I No, but I went back and forth. I left you in the car just like remember me. >> I went back and I know when I gave you the ticket last time when you left him in the car and I got your keys, took them out of the van, said don't do it again. >> Yeah. >> But you did it again. >> Hey guys, wait a second. Now, let's get back to the video. >> I ran I literally ran back and I was right here watching the car. >> I wasn't like in the Starlight. >> Well, as soon as I heard the name, I knew exactly what it was. And it's the exact same thing. >> Literally. >> Yeah. Last time you left him in the van running at Target. >> I know, but I ran in to check if they had wrapping paper. Ran out to check on him. Called my husband, told him what wrapping paper there was. ran back out and then I told him what you know like you're trying to figure out the inches of wrapping paper. >> From the moment officers met her, the vibe screamed denial with a sprinkle of holiday panic. Instead of accepting the obvious, she twisted timelines like wrapping paper rolls. 5 minutes here, 30 minutes there, back and forth like a bad rerun. The officers didn't need math skills. The babysitting stranger had already clocked her out. If this was her audition for World's Busiest Mom, the performance fell flat before act one closed. >> Whatever. And then was that >> husband or ex-husband? Last time you told me exhibit. >> Sometimes it's easier to call my husband. >> Sometimes it's easier to just call my husband. >> Where's he at right now? Last time you said you were living with your mom, right? >> I go back and forth with my mom. >> But you It was a crazy lake that you were seeing. >> Yeah. >> I just got here. So I saw the name. I recognize his name. The last time I had to carry him in, he was crying. I was at I like >> Oh, husband husband is actual husband or divorced or separated. We're not married and he's he's at home. Yeah. Where did your mom run? She had been a while. >> I don't remember. Did you say you had enough with DCFS? >> Um I think I'm not sure. I talked already. Yeah, cuz I'm pretty sure I contacted DCFS about you last time and I never got a phone call back. So, I don't know if it's still pending or not. >> Yeah, I'm pretty sure she came. >> She came to see my house. >> Before that, did you ever have any contact with BCFs before? >> Yeah, but I mean especially the way that people are stealing cars. I mean that's why I say two or three a day but just in our town >> and I mean in our village >> I don't care about that I don't think like I'm naive I guess I don't think about >> well I mean you need to watch the news cuz >> I don't watch I don't like hearing about Olympics they present the unfortunate truth you know what's going on >> I don't I my husband always tells me I live in a bubble like >> yeah because you know what's happen is that's why there's towns that actually you get a ticket for leaving your keys in the car and leaving it running >> that's why they cars. >> Yeah. I mean, and it's not just that, oh, they stole your car. No big deal. Like that car belongs to Ian. It's a rental. >> Yeah, it's a rental. >> So, like that's their rental. They don't want their car. You know what I mean? Cuz they're stolen use those vehicles for not. And then armed robbery shootings. >> It could be yours and paid off, but that car is not going to be used to go to church. You know what I mean? So now they're going to do even crazier things, but the stolen, not theirs. They don't care. >> Yeah. I don't care. >> It's a It's a spiral. >> I know. People sell cars. I didn't realize I still fire. >> So, real quick, let the know what's going to happen today. >> The conversation soon spiraled into personal soap opera territory. Husband, ex-husband, whatever. Her love life tangled harder than holiday lights. Meanwhile, the officers patiently stitched together her halftruths, deja vu memories, and halfbaked rationalizations. She treated the whole thing like an inconvenience, as if DCFS check-ins were just another errand sandwiched between buying tape and bows. uh DCFS will be contacted again cuz it's it's not my case, it's theirs. He's going to do it. So, they may have a follow up from them and you're going to get a ticket for endangering the life of a child. You have a court date. You'll be able to go home. But, um this is the second time I've done it both times. You left your kid in the car. >> You need to stop. >> I know someone hops in that car. Someone give you a kid to steal drive off. >> Sorry. >> And it's a discretion thing, too. Especially cuz it's so close. I mean the next this time right now he could take a different action. Obviously it's Christmas. You got the baby. >> Last time there's a lot of stuff going on in your life. >> Making better last time. Obviously the >> retail that's why I like here. I was like I just want to like run to see if they have it before I drag him in. He's freaking crazy. Whatever. >> It happens. Obviously recent it wasn't that long ago that I deal with you. >> That was like that was I know >> that was different. He was in the field stuff >> and that was like also I left him like this time I was like I made sure I was right here checking. >> So I like I told you last time I got small kids too. Just can't do that. >> All right. I'm going to head out. >> All righty ma'am. So I gave you a state ticket. Okay. So, this is required court date January um 7th, 2023 at 8:45 in the morning in Waggan. Okay. Uh I wrote you for child endangerment endangering or endangering a child uh endangering a life or a child um being in the car unattended for over 10 minutes. Okay. It's a class A misdemeanor. Okay. So, if you don't go to court, there could be issues in down the line. All right. Um, long story short, your doors were unlocked. Some guy, some people can just walk in and just take this car. We've had very high um motor vehicle thefts lately, especially around this time of the holiday, it's very bad, and especially with the little one. >> And with this being a frequent problem, this isn't your first time. >> Um, it's just going to keep going up. Okay. Uh, I will I will be contacting DCFS as well, and I'm going to be noting this. Um, so so real quick, we it's a class A misdemeanor. We technically can take you out of the car, put you in handcuffs, call DCFS or your husband to come pick up this baby. >> I know. I'm You just seem nonchalant about it. I'm not. >> Um, and I just want you to realize that you you we could have made you close bond. >> I know. >> And gone to jail today. >> I can see that. >> Okay. But we're not we're we're not going to do that. Okay. You're also getting a parking ticket parking in the uh fire lane with us. >> Thank you. >> Yep. >> Okay. This happens again, better believe we're going to take you out of the car and put you in. Okay. Cuz this isn't this isn't a joke to us, okay? That baby can't take care of itself. No. What if it started choking on something? If you're inside shop by the end, patients met paperwork. Officers handed her the ticket, added the probationw worthy child endangerment charge, and called in DCFS again. She left claiming stress, overwhelm, and excuses longer than a Christmas shopping receipt. Yet, the bigger truth stood tall. This wasn't about wrapping paper. It was about responsibility. And by the end, her mall run didn't land her bargains. It landed her under state supervision. The woman was charged with endangering the life of a child. Although it could have been elevated to a class 3 felony due to this being her second offense within months, it remained a misdemeanor. She was sentenced to 2 years of supervised probation with compliance checks, required to complete parenting or child safety classes, and placed under close DCFS monitoring.
