I don't know what kind of running you've had in the Let me talk Let me talk first. I don't know what kind of running you've had in the cops in the past but my job is to ensure the safety of you, her and these kids. Okay? So I need you to listen to what I'm trying to ask you, okay? All righty. So kind of walk me through. Is she okay? Is she inside the house right now? Yeah, she is. >> have any other kids inside the house right now? >> No, sir. And then he confronted her and she they started getting to a verbal argument and then she escalated it into a physical and he was trying to get her to bed. Okay. And she kept hitting him and it kind of got into them uh rolling around him trying to push her back as much as he could uh multiple times until Dylan came home and stuff. Um and he only saw that my dad was on top of her. Then I decided I had to come downstairs and get him away so he didn't assume he was trying to hurt her. Uh, then after a little bit more of that, actually he kept him away trying to calm him down. He uh went up to um I mean, she went up to their room to call y'all. And yes, that's Um, so I'm going to go and go over this because this is a domestic. If she gives me probable cause to believe that an incident has occurred that places you as the offender, and you're not providing me any information, the only information I have to go off of is what her word is. Because that is considered probable cause, you'll be placed on arrest. I need your help in assisting me with the information, is okay? I will go question her just like I question you, but I need you to give me all the info, okay? You have cameras inside the house? Okay, where are the cameras placed at? Uh, kitchen. They might as well turn the [ __ ] on. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, in the kitchen, do you have any of the cameras? Yes, sir. Did any of the incident take part in the kitchen? Yes, sir. Go around? No, just in the kitchen? That's where everything took place? At first, no one wanted the situation to escalate. The father repeatedly said he did not want his wife to face legal consequences, believing things had spiraled out of control due to outside influences and heightened emotions. Are including the son? I don't know. I have no idea. My son told me he had all the face from my damn wife. Got you. How long have you been married? 5 years. Okay, and do y'all share custody of those children? Are they your biological children? Yes, sir. They are my They are my step children. Okay. Okay. Is she considered the stepmom? I'm assuming okay. Do y'all have any other kids? We have a stepdaughter. Just you and your wife? Yes, sir. Okay. And then he comes to tell you, where you at? Are you at somewhere else inside the house? You were down the road at somebody else's house or something? Okay. He comes to tell you that he got involved in a physical altercation with his with his mom, your wife. Yes, sir. You come back over to the house to figure out what the hell's happening, which rightfully so, I understand. Yeah, all that stuff. And then what happens when y'all talk? Look, my mom cussing, like chairs thrown, walking Okay. Okay. She got She didn't like her girlfriend. They got in an altercation. His girlfriend? His girlfriend, and they started talking about it, and she got pissed off about it. Okay. And then he was out walking to my buddy's house down the road, and I came back and I'm like, "Why did you hit my kid?" I was like, "You hit my kid." And we got into it. Tossed around. There was no hit her, she hit me. There was chairs thrown, furniture moved. Like, I'm not going to hit a woman. Okay. I I don't care how drunk I am. I'm drunk. I'm not going to hit a woman. Okay. So, we moved around, so I was defensive. She was kind of like that I just hate her. I'm like, "Take your drunk ass to bed." And she was that was it. Okay. But I don't want her to go to jail. So, two questions on that. Okay. Did this right here on your neck happen from getting by furniture that was thrown a while? No, sir. How did that happen? Like hugging stuff when Okay. So, you said there was no physical contact or there there is some physical contact. What's the truth there? Was there or was there not? There is There is >> Okay. So, there was. Like So, you don't remember exactly what happened so that's why we're out in your house. No, you're good, dude. You don't remember exactly what happened? >> No, sir. Like You ever You ever You ever getting in a great altercation with someone? Yeah. Like you don't remember it. It's not That's my job. No, I remember all of it. No, no. Yes, sir. Is that okay if he uses it? Hell, yeah. Okay. He said, "Hell, yeah." All right. Sorry. Are you able to play your headset more or less? While the teen tried to avoid the tense situation and was affected more than once, the father did not show the level of understanding one might expect, which led to further verbal conflict between them. So, part of the incident I know happened inside the house. Yes, sir. I would like to go inside and take a look at everything that happened. So, I need you to put that dog in a another room. I will put her up. Go ahead. And this And your dad was here when that happened? Uh no, he was at a friend's house. He was at a friend's house. So, you were trying to go to where your dad was. Were you trying to pick him up and bring him back? Is that what you're doing? No, we were just going to go over there for a bit. And hang out. Yeah, let them do their thing, maybe TV, you know. And did you tell your dad or did How did your dad find out about that? No, he called uh my stepmom uh called him. Uh as she pulled me out because I was done I was just going to walk over to town. I figured he'd be on the way back with my car uh by then, but I wanted to get there and be able to explain to him my side of the story first. I figured he'd be mad, thank god he wasn't. Instead, he just At first, he brushed it off as just bickering, but you know, we we used to do that a lot. I had more now. Uh and then I tried to then I explained more. Me and him got a little heated when at first I said, you know, cuz there's a caliber. Uh when I said I would would like an apology but from her by tomorrow I would like to go to our cousin's uh uh house Johnny and I wanted his consent to do that because Well, stepmom came. Yeah. Uh and uh he pretty much said no. We kind of uh like we're getting a little mad at each other, but he still cared about me of course, so he confronted her about her choice. Yeah. And then that's when she started him. Uh yes, when they got into the verbal argument things got heated. I can't remember what was said. I was Yeah, like I can't remember what was said. They were both like saying pretty nasty things towards each other and she is very much inebriated. Uh him I don't know to the extent, but I think he usually handles his liquor better. Yeah. Uh so probably not as much and possibly sobered him up. Sobered him up quite a bit. She started hitting him and by my knowledge this could be wrong. I doubt it though because of the type of man my father is. I do not see him once initiate physical contact. She hit him. Pushed back. He never like directly >> hit him first. I I Like open fist, closed fist? >> I I can't remember what it was. >> Like hands, arms? Uh whatever it was. He pushed him and he kicked him to the side. Of what I saw. To the side. That was when I came to she I guess was tending I wasn't really paying attention cuz that's when I first displayed I walked through the door and I was screaming at dad cuz I thought he was hitting him. And then Jeffrey ran down the stairs. He Just back up. You don't know what's going on. I was talking to dad and then he was He was like, "You don't know what's going on." Yeah. And the next thing I see is mom running after dad. Stop. When asked, the stepmother admitted she had crossed a boundary, though she maintained it was not intentional. [music] The conflict reportedly began over a girl. All right, what's your name, ma'am? Melanie. Melanie what? My name is Melanie Sledge. Sledge. When I ask you a question what happened, I need the truth. If I get lied to, I don't appreciate that. I understand. >> know lying to a lying to a law is a violation Georgia. Yes. Georgia code, Georgia law. Yes. Okay. Been hurt, done that. My stepson didn't like what I told him. He was in another person's vehicle. I asked him to get out and let them come up here and get it. Okay. He didn't listen to me. I was trying to get him out. Still didn't listen to me. I I to come out. I told Adam to come and get him. He got mad at me. Things got physical. I didn't like the way things went. I don't want it to go this way. Okay. I don't So, let's let's break it down. There's an incident between you and your son. Adam told me that the argument between you and your son was over your son's girlfriend. Now, you don't like her very well. Is that right? I didn't say that. I said But, you do have an issue with her. Is that right? >> No, I just don't know her. Okay. Okay. So, So, what what Like, hey. Hey. I I'll let me ask my questions. I can't ask questions if you're speaking over me. Okay? So, there's an issue with you and your son's girlfriend. Okay? You're not liking what about her? What's going on there? That was it. Like, she It's not that I don't like her. I just don't know her. >> Okay, so fine. You don't know her. So, where's the issue? That's it. I don't know her. Okay. So, what what was the argument between you and your son? He [bell] didn't like what I told him. I told him What did you tell him? What did you tell him? I told him know him. That was it. He walked off. He got in the car, which wasn't mine or his. I asked him to get out. What car? It was So, okay. So, let me get this right. His girlfriend pulled up to the house. >> No, his girlfriend was never here. He just So, what car? It was the neighbor's down the street. It was their car. He We came up here. How did y'all get on the topic of his girlfriend? He asked you what? He asked me what I thought of his girlfriend. I'm like, I don't know her. Okay. I don't know her enough. So, y'all got into an argument because you don't Listen to me. I don't like being talked over. Please, dear God, when I ask you a question, be quiet. Okay? Can I finish? >> No, cuz I'm talking right now. When I talk, you don't talk. Is that clear? Crystal. Cool. So, y'all get into an argument over his girlfriend. You're saying you don't know her, he's taking that the wrong way. He tries to get into a car and leave. Is that right? >> Yes. And you don't want him to leave. >> Because that's not our car. He Cuz it's not whose car? >> It's not mine and my laptop's are his to take. So, he was trying to drive away with somebody's car. Yes. Was anybody else driving the car? >> No, it was He brought it up here and I said they would come up here and get it. >> Okay. Yes. So, you try to get him out of the car. Yes. How did you try? I tried to pull him out. >> Okay. Why did you try to pull him out? Because he wasn't listening to me. He He's drinking. I've been drinking. They have been >> How old is your son? He is 17. All right. So, your son gets behind the wheel of a car, he's been drinking, you try to not let him drive because he's been drinking. Yes. So, you try to pull him out of the car. Yes. Does he resist you? Did he try to punch you, fight you, scratch you, or does he just pull away? He pulled away and I ended up like trying to pull us from another He I don't You hit him? Like I went to go pull his other arm out, which was on the gear, and he wouldn't listen. So, you hit him? Yes. I didn't mean to. Okay. Okay. I got you. Can I look at your side? Yes, sir. Do you care to pull that While officers documented visible signs of a confrontation on the father and the teen, the stepmother inside still acted >> Pull your shirt up. She mentioned that you Did you? No, I didn't Well, she hit you right there. Can I pull this? Is that okay? No, that was them trying to them Trying to what? Can I look on this side? Is that okay? Anything on this side? No, sir. But, nothing hurts. How did you hit him? Did you like this? Did you hit him like this? When I was trying to go and grab his other arm off the gear. Okay. Where did you hit him at? I hit him in the cheek, I guess. I reached over to grab his arm and I hit him in the cheek. Okay. I was trying to tell >> So, what happens after that? And I called him to come home and deal with it and he just started yelling at me. Y'all get into a physical fight here? Yes, I was trying to tell So, what happened to the fight What happened in the fight here? He He He doesn't need to see like like I don't want him arrested. That doesn't tell me anything. Yeah, like I see there's stuff thrown around, but that doesn't tell me anything. So, what happened? And I've been pushed around. I tried to tell him to calm down. He's like, "You're drunk." I'm like, "I'm not that drunk." >> How much have you had to drink? I had a few hard drinks. Y'all both been drinking? Y'all get into a fight? So, where are you at? Let me see the phone please. She Yeah, she just pulled up. Okay. So, y'all Y'all get into a fight inside the house. You call him to come over here to deal with your son. So, what happens after that? He gets mad at like I I guess Jeffrey took down the road looking insane and like all sorts of [ __ ] and that's fine in school. I'll take the blame for it. I just didn't want him driving the car when he was pissed. It wasn't mine. It wasn't his. It wasn't mine. I'm clear on that. We're not talking about that anymore. We're talking about the the fight between you and your husband. What happened there? Like it just got physical and I just wanted to de-escalate it. That was >> Where were y'all inside the house when it happened? In the living room and the kitchen and the bedroom. Okay. So, you're saying he got physical. What How did he get physical? He He pushed >> Cuz this is between me and my partner here. This is physical. Is that that? Like I can't even talk like he was You've been talking fine this entire time. So, keep going. Like I've done this at work. I don't want to do this anymore. Well, we don't want to be here more than you want us here. But listen, I need you to tell me what happened. All right? So, what happened between the fight between you and your husband? I tried to explain to him and he got pissed off at me and started pushing. Okay. Elbow in the neck. Pushing, throwing stuff. Yes, I threw his stuff. I called 911 because I just wanted de-escalate the situation. I wanted to get out. Did you try to scratch him? I tried to get him off me. Yes, I tried to scratch him. Okay, where did where did you When did you try to get him off of you? What was he doing? When he had his arm on my neck. Okay, were you back against the wall? >> Yes. Were you on the ground? >> I was on the stairs when he did it. There we go. See, we're now we're get Sorry, we're getting the details. I need the details. You You have to give me the details. He had me on the stairs. He had me back against the wall. I wanted past. I wanted out. Okay. You mind if I take a look at your neck? I think. You mind if I take a pictures? I need to. I know you just want everything back to normal, and we would like for that to happen, too. But before we begin that process to get everything back to normal, I just got to know the details of everything that happened. Did you try to punch him? Yes, sir. Did you call for help? Did you scream for help? >> Yes, sir. But he was here, but his kids were here, but his kids Okay. Uh were the kids here that saw it? Yes, sir. He had his kids with him. One of walked in the house and started yelling at him, and then the other one told him stop. >> You said that on the stairwell he had his forearm on your neck. Is that true? Yes, sir. So he had his forearm on your neck in the bathroom, too? Yes, when I was trying to get him out of the bathroom. Okay. Where were you? Were you on the floor or you in a chair? >> pushed me against the dang What's it called? The vanity? And the thing he had pushed me against that, and all I was trying to do was get him out of the bathroom. What what What did it take to get him off of you? It pushing him. That helped. Okay. Um did your sons come up to help you to pull him off of you pull him off of you and everything. Okay. I see inside there's a bunch of potato chips thrown around. How'd that happen? He threw them? He just threw the bag of potato chips? Did you try to win it or something or you just don't? Okay. I also see there's a bunch of brown stuff spread out. Looks like protein powder. Kratom? Okay. So, what happened there? Okay. Did he throw it at you? Or did he just throw it? Okay. I also see there's a stool knocked over over here. You know that stool? Okay. So, you threw the stool at him? Where was he standing? Okay. He pushed you down on the stairwell? Were you standing up or were you laying down on the stairs? Did he have you held down or did he just push you and leave? As if the situation was not her responsibility, >> [music] >> she did not seem to realize that emotions on both sides had escalated and judgment had been clouded. At this point, security camera footage helped clarify the sequence of events showing that actions leave evidence whether we choose to acknowledge it or not. Hey. is the oldest son, right? Okay. So, can you walk me through what had occurred with Jeffrey tonight? We came back to the house. From hanging out hanging out at the friend's house? >> Yes. And he asked me like what are the one of his girlfriend? I'm like I don't know her enough to give you that. Yeah. And he got pissed off with it. Okay. Do you mind if I send this video to my phone? He got really pissed and like he got pissed off with it and he jumped in their car. How old is the guy again? 16 17 16 17 Acne or not? Uh this one right here guys that is acne. Everything else is Yeah. Okay. You got to hear with anything with a minor? Miss Doll, I'm not sure yet. I'm still trying to figure out what's happening. Your wife's not giving us a lot of information. You're not giving us a lot of information, okay? >> Good deal. All right. With all due respect, can me and my kids will leave? No, you're not leaving. My mom's talking talking about my significant other and I was just curious about her opinion of her and it's how we were talking about the situations that have happened in the past and then she kind of just got on like insulting me and her and I was done with the conversation. So, I walked out to the car. The 17-year-old son outside offered a different perspective. According to him, the stepmother's account seemed to downplay the extent of her behavior. This suggests that when faced with responsibility, >> [music] >> adults may sometimes avoid it and minimize their mistakes instead of addressing them directly. So, I walked out to the car to get ready and I waited for her. She got She opened the passenger side first telling me to get out. It'll be too Well, it's fine. Just go to bed and I'm like yeah, you're going with me or you're not going there or you're staying home. And I go like again it's not in your neighborhood. She started yelling at me. I ignored her. She went around to the other side. Then she started pulling me out with my seat belt on and she hit me maybe because I would not do anything. And I was just like I'm not getting out. And she unbuckled my seat belt. I tried to pull me. I held on to the console I believe that would be. And um So was she on the driver side or the passenger side? Uh at first she was on the passenger then she moved over to the driver to pull me out. When she hit you was she standing on the passenger side? Uh driver side. She was standing on the driver side? Yes sir. Did she hit you twice? Yeah. Uh and uh Both the same place in the face? Yes sir. Right here of course where they not be then after she took my seat belt off trying to pull me out again and me calling for my again we stood there for about 30 seconds. >> Same way she Yes. Okay. Uh what except it was closed. I'm not sure if the person was open or closed Okay. or not. And then I we kind of stared at each other for about 30 seconds and Uh when she got out of the way a little bit I got out. I started walking and on foot in the direction of the buddy sacks. She called my dad. Uh and The father, despite trying to defend his wife, gradually realized that the situation had gone beyond what the family could handle on their own. She's going after me. I was stopping her. It was my personal room. I think things are going to be Did you hold her down? Yes sir. Okay. How did you hold her down? With her arms. I held her arms. Held her by the head. Okay. What was the purpose of you holding her down? Keep her from hitting me. Okay. Was she trying to punch you, kick you, slap you, scratch you, any of those? She was just coming at me and I was holding her arms. Okay. What part of her was coming at you? Describe that for me. >> Her body like How was she coming at you? Like Okay. If she's just doing that to you, right? If I do that to my partner over there, I don't know why he would hold me down for that unless I'm actively throwing punches, kicks, scratches, things like that. You understand? Yeah. So, was she doing any of that? She I feel like she was trying to, but she didn't. Okay. Did she punch you? No. Did she kick you? Not to my knowledge. Okay. Uh did she slap you? Not to my knowledge. Did she scratch you? I don't know. I really don't. She I mean, like if I was hurting I know you're trying to just protect her. No, no. If I was hurting up on you and you grabbed me, like would you not scratch me? So, are you saying she scratched you? Possibly, yeah. Possibly or yes, but Like I don't know. Although both sides had lost their composure, the stepmother could not provide sufficiently convincing information. Because the incident involved a minor, she was required to cooperate with officers according to standard procedure. Okay. Can I get your first name? Naomi. Based on the video, the evidence that was provided to us by her testimonial and video evidence, all right, at this time you're being placed under arrest for domestic, okay? Misdemeanor this way. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. Okay, I don't have any questions for you at this time. We're going to get you loaded up in my car and get everything squared away, okay? So, she has been placed under arrest at this time for battery family violence. Yeah. I don't know exactly what he is going to charge her with, but I'm assuming it's going to be against both you and your son. Minors? Well, he's 17. He's still considered a minor in the state of Can you lock him up? He's not considered a minor at 17. Correct. You put him in adult jail. That is correct. All right. But I mean, that doesn't change anything. Makes sense. Yeah. But no, he's not getting charged. You're not getting charged. No, I mean, I'm not worried about I'm worried about my wife. Yeah, I got you. Because I know you didn't call, she called. But when we get called out to something like this and we find that there's physical contact that's been made, probable cause or if there's probable cause to make an arrest, we have to make an arrest. All right, Mr. Doll, so this is called the victim assistance form. I'm going to have my partner explaining this a little bit about what it is, okay? It's just saying that if you want to, you can be notified at all the judicial proceedings, okay, including arraignment, trial, sentencing, and anything else involved in this case. Let me get you a copy and get you out of here, okay? The stepmother has been charged with family family simple battery to children in the second degree and to children in the third degree. Under Georgia law, she could face 4 to 17 years in prison. A family is not just a place to live, but a child's first and most important learning environment. How adults handle conflict becomes a behavioral model that children may follow. That is why the responsibility of parents and caregivers lies in how we acknowledge and correct our mistakes in front of children. Behind this emotional scene is a troubling picture of poor judgment from a mother behind the wheel with an infant sitting just feet away. On April 26th, 2022, police were dispatched after receiving a report that an infant had been left in a car while the mother was under influence. When she noticed officers, she quickly drove away, leading to a tense situation on the road. The vehicle only came to a stop after striking a fence, >> [music] >> and in the back seat was a crying baby, about 6 weeks old. Despite showing multiple signs of distress and disorientation, the mother continued to insist that she was completely fine. >> [music] >> Kendra? Kendra Perkins, right? Keep calm 133. Name of the driver Kendra Perkins. Is that her? >> [music] >> 55 Is there a kid in the car? Come on, Kendra. There's a kid in the car. Come on, kid. Keep calm 131. You got EMS on the way. Tell her there's a child in the back of the vehicle. I'm with my kids. I was just going to my dad's. Okay. How much have you had to drink? Only a couple drinks. Only a couple drinks? I promise. I got kicked out of my mom's today. Are you I got kicked out of my mom's. Okay. I got kicked out of my mom's, so I was going to my dad's. Okay. Okay. What's that smell right there? Can you make sure the baby's okay? Yeah. I locked the door. Driver's 10-35. Pull over. Pull over here, please. At this point, the situation required cooperation to stabilize the scene and, most importantly, ensure the child's safety. However, while officers tried to check on the baby, the mother responded in ways that did not support those efforts. Sherbet I got kicked out of my mom's twice today. I called Noelle, and Noelle said she's going to bring the kids over here. She ended up walking over here. Noelle got here first with Avery, and then she came inside the house all mad. She just swung at me and me and I said this is messed up cuz you're doing it in front of the kids. I'm in there trying to cook dinner. Mhm. And then she done for some reason grabbed a knife off the counter and just like like pretty much swung it and I done put my arm up cuz I don't >> Okay. Did she ask the kids to go with her or they just went with her? >> Well, Ava Ava's you know, she's Went with her? Yeah, you know, I was just like, "Oh, this and that." And then and it's like a lot of verbal lot of verbal abuse. Like she would tell the kids, you know, and then like my Ava's saying, "I hate you, Daddy. Yeah, Daddy. Yes, you know, you need to leave." Like you know, like and then using cuss words, too. And it's just like this is messed up. It's verbal, you know, like why are you going to have you know, she's 4 years old. The father was charged with injuring the welfare [music] of a child and taken into custody at the Will County Adult Detention Facility. Under Illinois law, if convicted, he could face up to 1 year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500. [music] Every action adults take can shape a child's future in profound ways. Sometimes, just a bit more patience, awareness, [music] and care can prevent moments of regret and turn them into lessons of love and responsibility instead. What would you do if you came across a situation where a child's safety might be at risk inside a vehicle? The real-life story in this video will surely make us rethink those decisions that might seem harmless at first. In English? Yeah, I'm saying I'm On August 8th, 2024, in the city of DeLand, a mother made a decision that left her infant alone inside a parked vehicle for quite some time while she went shopping. The situation soon caught the attention of nearby people, prompting local authorities to arrive and ensure the child's safety. Shortly afterwards, the mother returned. Okay, why was your baby in the car? Cuz she's not ready to walk. What? She's not ready to walk. You can't leave your child in the car. Yeah, but I can't carry a three-year-old child. I'm pregnant. I can't carry all of it. Okay, well, you should have left one at home. I got a phone with me down in the car on. Okay, you still can't Come up Come back over here. If you want to >> Oh, yeah, I come here. I'm here. Anything something. Okay. Is the car running right now? Yeah, it's running. If you want to put them inside Does it have AC? Yeah, I have a phone with me down. Okay, if you want to put them inside, but I'm going to have you stand out here with me. I want you down. I want to put her with you down. So, the AC's not working. You leave your child >> her in there open if we don't. You understand how hot it is? I don't want to put her with you down in the air out. Would you sit in a car with no air? >> don't try it. So, you I didn't do wrong. I just got here. Well, we got the call minutes ago. So, it was long enough for her to be sweating and people seeing that the child was in there. I know you did that three minutes. During the conversation, officers noticed that the mother seemed to be in an unsteady emotional state, which made the situation more delicate. Is there anybody you can call to come to like get the kids? Huh? Is there anybody else you can call, a family member? Yeah, my mom. Okay, can you have her come this way? But, what's wrong? >> We We want someone with the kids. You not going way now. I'm sorry? I'm on my way now. We're still investigating, but we just want to have your mom call cuz we Does she have a car with AC? And she can transport the kids home. >> Yeah, I'll be here right now. I'm sorry? I'll be here right now. How long? >> Yeah. Probably a while. We're still investigating. We have a lot of people to talk to. I guess the car doesn't have AC. I'm trying to think where Well, there's nowhere out here. No shade either. No. No. Y'all going to be here a minute? They They can be sitting in there with They won't allow it? Okay. Just because there's no AC in the car? Uh-uh. Okay, thank you. Just keep it out of the way. I don't No. No. I'll be out in 4 minutes. For 4 minutes? Yeah. Are you speaking another language? English. Yes, I am. That's okay. I don't know sign language. >> don't know sign language. Can I read lips? You read lips? Yeah. Okay. Okay. So, you just went in for about 4 minutes, left them in the car, but the AC doesn't work that great. Yeah, but now we can go. The car was running. The car was running. She She took off. With the windows down. Yeah. Yeah. She took the other kids in, but not the one. Oh, so just the little girl was in the car? Oh. Yeah. Um She's just trying to find somewhere to get them some AC. And they sit on these cars or small cars. I mean, they can sit in the back, but So, I only have the back seat. I'm going to see if my sergeant might pull up and possibly >> Yeah, to put Just because I don't have I don't mind them sitting I don't if they press buttons. I have to turn You can sit in the back seat, too. You can roll the windows down, open your center divider, and let the air flow. Okay. She's on the phone with mom right now. The officers promptly contacted a family member so the baby could be safely cared for and removed from the vehicle in a calm manner. Huh? Yeah, speaker. Hello, ma'am. Are you able to come up here just so we can get the kids transported in a vehicle with AC? Yeah, I know her AC Her AC went out. Because the mechanic was fixing the AC, and she thought it was fixed, and he did not fix it. But she told me about it this morning. Okay. Yeah, so the issue is that she left the child in the car. So, we Are you able to come up to Belk's Outlet in Dothan? Right now, we're still investigating, but we do need a family member here. You said you're in Dothan? Wait. About how About how long will it be? Okay. Is there another family member that can come that's closer or Okay, yeah. If you could start heading that way this way, that would be great. Okay, thank you. Authorities then performed a routine wellness check on the infant and evaluated whether the event could have affected the child's comfort or health in any way. Here you go. Thank you. Here you go. Thank you. You say bye? I got to go. It's nice meeting you. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. All righty. Does your mom have car seats? We got here literally at like the same time you did. So, when we get information, we'll be able to tell you, all right? >> Well, she told me that you all are looking at the camera before you all got here. Our sergeant is in there doing that. Yeah. Yes. They're supposed to be looking at them before they arrested like why is they arresting her? Because they did. Yeah, he He did see the camera. He just He's in there getting a statement or something, and then he radioed back to us, yeah. Okay. To fully understand what had happened, officers reviewed security camera footage from nearby stores to determine the amount of time the baby had been in the car. She found out why that it was when she found out that she had her grandbaby in the car. And this is my friend. She was pretty pretty much like I can't believe this. You know, like they arrested her. But I I know why they arrested I know why they I can't believe she did that all night. Depending on the information here, I can't believe she did that on purpose. Depending on the information here, I don't know which one is which. There's the misdemeanor charge and there's the felony charge. And then one's a 316 and the other's like 316. Over 316? I'm I'm looking more child child Yes, sir. I've just got to look at cuz the verbage on them is very similar. I'm going to grab my book and look. Yes, sir. Because the 15-minute thing, [clears throat] that's the misdemeanor 316. That's Yeah, she's getting a citation for leaving a vehicle unattended. Is it? Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah, 100%. recording showed that the child had been inside for about 25 minutes, long enough to raise understandable concerns about the baby's safety and comfort. I'm going to ask one more time, do you have anything that's going to poke, stick me, any anything? No? So, if I get stick, you know that Can I have you put your chest on the car? Then place your chest on the car. What's that? They're not taking her yet, right? Why? Do you need this? I need to talk to her and then I need to go find her cuz all her kids are at I don't have nothing. Where are your kids right now? Okay. Thank you. Huh? Okay. Okay. Um So, do you want us to roll up the windows and get your Mama, I'll take him. She'll take care of him? Mama Okay. Nobody's holding it. Oh, she said her She just said her mom will take care of it. Okay, I'll let Mom know that. Is she deaf? Yeah. Okay. I guess, but she answers me when she wants to talk. But now Give me one sec. I'm going to send you an NVC number. Okay. We got Mom's info. I ran the tag. Okay. I didn't get her ID or anything. Perfect. All right. It won't let me make it past It just depends on what degree of charge. We get her right now, we're looking at that child's welfare. It could be possibly a year's. I'm just waiting for my supervisor getting camera footage, but we're going to for her to pick her up tomorrow. And then her baby Oh, sorry. What size is she? He is a medium. Oh, okay. Cuz I'm going to get him Oh, okay. The mother was charged with child endangerment. Under Florida law, she could face up to 5 years in prison or probation, along with a fine of up to $5,000. [music] This incident serves as a heartfelt reminder. In every circumstance, planning ahead and prioritizing children's safety should always come first. Each incident in this video is a reminder that we don't always get the chance to correct our mistakes. Some decisions bring consequences that can follow people for years. Rules and laws may outline penalties, but they can't fully measure the quiet emotional impact on a child.
