And I and I accidentally my child Is there receipts for any of this? No. Do you have money to pay for the items? These adult misjudgments unintentionally place the child in a difficult situation. We're going to have you step out of the vehicle. All right, you're under arrest. >> I was trying to protect all of us from them. When explanations are no longer sufficient, proper authorities must step in to ensure responsibility and protect a child's well-being. That's certainly is. That makes no sense. >> No, it's disgusting. You with a 10-year-old daughter? >> Yes. You wouldn't expect this. All the items in the car still had original tags, yet there was no proof of purchase. So, where did these goods actually come from? On April 8th, 2024, officials noticed a Toyota traveling with an expired plate. After the vehicle was stopped, the situation became more complex when it was determined that the driver was not properly authorized to operate the vehicle and was connected to a previous matter. More concerning, a 10-year-old girl was also inside the car. We'll be stopped just before the overpass here. Hello. I'm Officer Marusa, Amherst Police Department. So, the reason I stopped you, I ran your plate. Your owner of the vehicle is coming back as suspended. Are you Britney by chance? No, I'm her sister. Who are you? I'm her sister. Okay, do you have your license on you? I do not. You do not. What's your name? Do you have like any form of ID on you? No, I don't. Okay. Do you have a valid license or Yes. You do? Okay. What's your social security number? I don't have it. What? I don't have it. Do you know your social security number? >> No, I don't. So, where are you guys heading tonight? I'm taking her back to my dad's house. Okay. This is strictly better time. Okay. And how old are you? 10. No, no, you. No, you. You're You're 25? Okay. Give me 1 second. My partner is coming. I'm going to check. She the driver said she's 25. Okay. She does not look like it. Doesn't know her social. I couldn't see the picture of the DMV picture of the chick who had the picture on it. So, I just waited for you to back up. Backing up and I'm going I'll hang out here. Yeah, appreciate it. That's not her. >> 89159 [Music] All right, that's not you. You're Britney. Okay. We're going to have you step out of the vehicle. All right, you're under arrest. Put the phone down. Or give it to give it to your daughter. We'll worry about her. She'll be fine. >> Okay, I understand this is a better time. Okay, I get that. Yeah, I just didn't want her to see it. All right, turn around, put your hands behind your back. Do you have like any form of ID on you? I do not. Does she have somebody that can come pick her up? Yeah, I have somebody. What was that? Okay. You got anything in your pockets? I'm not going to like reach in or anything, but No, I'm okay. All right. I don't know if they're going to want you. They likely are. What do we do who can pick her up? Do we need to take her back to the police department so she can get picked up by >> she can get picked up by I just have to call. >> Okay, we'll work on that. Let's make sure that they want you first, but in in the event we'll we'll get her taken care of, okay? Yes. Do you have anything that you need besides your phone? You have a wallet or Yeah, I got There's my wallet in there and then my husband's wallet. And your husband's wallet too? Yeah, that's why I don't got my wallet. We'll get that. So, we'll go to this place. All right, Britney, so you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to talk to an attorney and have him or her present before any questioning if you wish. Do you understand these rights as I presented them to you? >> I do. Okay. Take a seat in there. Is there anything illegal in your car? Okay. You okay if we looked? I don't know. Okay. Well, we're going to figure out something with your daughter, okay? I just want to make sure I know what's going on here. Absolutely. I mean, it's that's your kid. >> Cuz that's the only reason that, you know, I I didn't want I knew I had a warrant out and I didn't want her to go. You do realize you did I mean, you committed a offense there, right? >> Yeah, I get it. I I just I didn't want my daughter, you know what I mean? I I I understand that. >> I get it. I'm sorry. And I'm sorry for Yeah, who is That's your actual sister? Okay. >> sister. Okay. Yeah, she is the same birthday. I'm not going to lie, it was a major red flag when you said you didn't know your social security number, so. What surprised officials was that throughout the process, the 10-year-old girl provided clearer information than her mother. What we're going to do is if they do want her, we're just waiting to hear back on that here any minute. We'll take your daughter back to our station in the front lobby and you can pick her up there. Turn you back over to your daughter and I'll I'll let you know for sure if they want her and then we'll we'll get that ball rolling, okay? Okay, you're welcome. Yeah, here she is. [ __ ] she's 25. Yeah. She has a warrant in. Yeah. I'll I'll start searching for you. Appreciate it. Yeah, just for you. Yeah, before and I'll you know, let's just wait till make sure that they want her first. Yeah. And afterwards, I'll get her out, have her sit in the back of my car for the Yeah, I'm going to I'm going to at least going to I mean, she lied to me, so. I would charge her with obstruction. Yeah, go ahead. You want to start your I don't know, you going to do a DUI or expired plates or you doing anything like that? She is suspended, right? Yeah, she is suspended. with the suspension. Yeah. I actually start on that with with that ticket and I'll set up We can either do the 90 turnaround or if it's easier for them to use the gas station up here after. Okay, you'll take the juvenile? I'll get her, yeah. You have no ID on you though? I don't know if I do. It's in my wallet. Where's your wallet at? It's in the back of Okay. Could you see if her wallet's in or >> I didn't ask yet. I I yeah, I have to. Okay. 89145 Sweetie, I'll have you step out. Um I'll take mom's phone. Can we grab her her wallet, too? Take that. Which one's her phone? Okay, I'm just going to take you to your house with dad. That's all we're doing. So, I just got to have you go in my car. Mom's in a different car, okay? What's that, baby? Oh, I'll get that for you, absolutely. I just don't want you to get hurt. So, you tell me what you need and we'll do that. So, this stuff is mom's? Yes. Yeah, I'll get you there. I'm sorry you got to go through this, but she's not going to be gone very long. I can go to court with the summons. I got this for you and then you do want her to have your phone or do you want your phone? I I want my phone. She can take my wallet. But she can take this? Okay. I want you to have this, but I will take her phone when you're done. And then you need the the phone or do you need this? Do you need anything else out of here? Um it's that bag, too. That's just clothes and stuff. Where did you guys go? Um school. Um my backpack had a lot of my snacks. Okay. Here's your phone. [Applause] Is there Is there a receipt for any of this? No. Sweetie, um give me her phone. What? This is my office stuff. Okay, did this Did this just come from >> Um this is what came from my house. So, this is this is already yours? >> Yeah. Take that. Clothes and stuff, too. Okay. This is my office stuff. Okay. And then my Like this bag or this No, this one. Just this one. Move over a little bit. I got to look through this real quick. Is that your inhaler? Yeah, I have >> Okay. Okay. You doing okay right now? Okay. You know, those are my favorite snacks, too. Here, I'm going to give you that. What else do you need? What's that, baby? Just some stuff there. What's all of it? They're probably right here. I'll tell you which ones. Just those two right there in that backpack there. Okay, you got it. Yeah, you're welcome. Anything else? No. Okay, let me uh Oh, and my blanket. Your blanket? Here you go. All right, I can I can help you carry some of this. Yeah, I got it. We'll go back to that second car, okay? And that's her that's mom's phone, right? Okay, if you need anything, I can still get it for you, but we'll get this stuff back. Go ahead and hop in here. Hold that or make sure that doesn't spill. During the vehicle check, authorities discovered a large amount of brand new clothing with original tags, but no supporting documentation. The mother was also unable to verify ownership of the items. I got you for something. Yeah. So, I was going to stop for the daughter. Yeah. >> And all this stuff. Okay. >> So, I asked her. I said, "Is there a receipt for any of this?" She was reluctant, but she said no. She said no. So, they just came from Kohl's. So, I'm sure that this got swiped cuz there's no bag or anything. I'm going to call Lorraine real quick. Okay. >> Do we Mirandize her now? I'll Mirandize her. Okay. Um I'm I'm just going to ask her about this stuff real quick and I mean, she's even stolen property. Yeah. She has probation too, so I I I don't I I I just don't comment to you, but Yeah. Um so, there's this stuff I think brand new Yeah. Good catch on that, man. Well, I just uh I wanted to help that little girl out and get her stuff and Yeah. Like So, if you want to ask her real quick, um I'll be with you. Okay. We'll see what All right. So, we're helping your daughter get some stuff out of the car. There's a bunch of clothes with tags on them still. There's no bags. There's no receipt. Your daughter said you guys just got got back from Kohl's. What's what's up with that? Do you have a receipt? No, I don't need it. No bag or anything that that stuff would have came in? Yeah. How did you pay for it? That's stuff I got a while ago. I just got her makeup. I mean, have you guys got any reports or anything? What's that? Is there any reports or anything? >> going to call. I got a call now, but I mean, that just doesn't make any sense to me. You know what I mean? Okay. No, I understand. Go ahead. What is this original warrant for? Um I don't really remember, to be honest. It was a from like 2023. The court court case I got You don't you have no idea what the original charges were? I believe it was for theft, honestly. Okay. Excuse It was apples. Do you see >> I get it. I understand. >> And and we Okay, but here's the Here's what I have some trouble with too. I This poor girl is upset because mom Mom already lied. This car's getting towed. She just told me you guys came from Kohl's, which you're saying was just some makeup and stuff, but you don't even have a receipt for that. You just throw the receipt away as soon as you leave as soon as you got to the front door. That doesn't make sense to me. I don't I'm sorry. All right. I mean, I understand now what it looks like. So, when when did you buy that? Last last week. Last week? Yeah. And how did you How did you purchase it? >> With the card. So, you would you have that transaction on your card on your phone? It was Like through your bank? It was last last month. What's that? It was last last month. There seems to always be an answer to that. So, we're going to call Kohl's and we're going to contact LPD and see if they had any. So, They're going to find me. They're They'll check the cameras, so I mean, they've already lied to us a bunch of times, so Had any thefts from Kohl's? Female's got some of this here in the car. They might want to take a look at it. Go through the rest of the car. Yeah, it's um let's put all this I don't know if the book bag's part of it, but That's certainly is. That makes no sense. No, it's disgusting. You want to tell your old daughter Come on. Yep. I don't know. >> Let me grab some Let me grab you some gloves. Do you want gloves for your car or Yeah. Cuz she's got this here too. Yeah. That's fine. Hey Jeff. Uh she's got hundreds of dollars worth of clothes. She said she bought them a few months ago. I had the daughter, she's 10 years old. She said they just came from Kohl's. So, when I asked mom that, she said, "Well, I just got her some makeup." No receipt. Can't pull up the transaction on her card or anything. So, I I I don't believe her. Um but the daughter said this this little girl said they just came from there, so we'll see if they had anything. Um you know, she already lied. The original warrant I said she wouldn't even tell me what the original warrant was for and I finally got to it. It's for theft. I mean, but I'm trying to you know, just nothing makes sense. She kind of has an answer to everything, so I feel bad for the girl, but Um yeah, it's probably like maybe I mean, some of these sweatshirts are 65 bucks. Those balls Yeah, those are expensive too. Like 8 or 9 9 45 But They advise they have not had a Kohl's on this tomorrow. Yeah. We're taking this stuff. I I thought I was Was that part of it? There's still a tag on it, so Yeah, I'll take that. The girl's continued statements helped clarify several key details. And there's more There's more stuff. These look used or This is brand new almost. So, it just kept changing. Yeah. Hey, real quick. I couldn't remember. Did you say you were Did you go in with mom or you just stayed in the car? Was that right before like you guys got pulled over? Okay, sweetie. Thank you. So, what's She'll tell us. So, she stayed in the car. So, your description would be this female by herself. Probably there was a book bag or a large black purse. She's saying that she was in there with her mother-in-law? No, she said her mother-in-law bought all that stuff that we just added up a few a few weeks ago. That doesn't make any sense. It's just been sitting in the car. In the Yeah, with no receipt. When speaking again with the mother, she stated that all the items had been paid for and disagreed with the concerns raised. So, what's your name? Brittany. Brittany, what's the last name? Carter. Okay. Uh I'll just advise you of your rights. You do have the right to remain silent. Anything you say could be used against you in court. You have the right to an attorney. If you can't afford one, one will be appointed to represent you for any questioning and court proceedings. Do you understand that? Okay. Can you walk me through what happened? About how you got pulled over and how all this transpired? What's that? I'm getting out. Okay. Were you I guess our concern is about the clothes. What What's up with all the clothing? They're not my clothes. Well, they're not my clothes. They're my boyfriend's. Uh Was he with you at some point today? No. Earlier he was. Are the clothes stolen? No. You're sure? Yes. If I go to Kohl's and I say, "Hey, did Did a blonde girl with glasses just pay for all this stuff?" What are they going to tell me? They'll tell you I didn't get this stuff there. Where'd you get it? I got it from Kohl's. The Lorraine or the Eva? Lorraine. I was like the Eva. Oh, you were just at Kohl's before this stop? Yeah. I didn't get those clothes right then. I already sent them. You got makeup? Yes. Did your daughter go in with you or no? Yes. There's no bag. You don't have a bag. I mean, like typically when you get checked out, they fold it up real nice, put it in a bag, a plastic Kohl's bag with a receipt. Well, I got those clothes days ago in the mail. So, you just What about a receipt for the makeup today? I don't. Okay. And she went in with you? Yes, she did. That's weird. If you If you have a way to If you have some way to prove that all this stuff belongs to you, we'll give it back to you, but at at the present time, we suspect that it's very likely that the stuff is stolen because of the way it's laid out in the car. It was all stuffed in that backpack. That's not a Kohl's bag. It all has the tags still on it. It's very clear that it's brand new clothing. Okay? So, if it turns out to be stolen, you will be charged with receiving stolen property at a later time. Okay? So, that's what you told me is that's all you want to say? Yeah, I can tell you that. Okay. In the end, the mother was cited for obstructing official business, driving under suspension, and having expired plates. The total fines and related fees amounted to $260. The child was placed with the appropriate authorities to ensure her safety. Children learn from the actions of adults. Every poor choice made today can quietly shape the lessons they carry with them on their long road ahead. Black Friday is usually the busiest shopping day of the year. However, within the crowd of bargain hunters, one family chose to take advantage of the moment in a highly risky way. Because they're our business partners. Okay. Because we have a party usually, you know, Christmas party and other, you know, just get that. On November 29th, 2024, store security contacted local authorities after noticing a group that included a teenage girl, her mother, and her grandmother for suspected violations of store policies. Upon arrival, officers quickly reviewed the situation through the store's camera system. How's it going? Hey. What's up, Taylor? Hello. Hello. What's going on? Yeah. So, this young lady had this stuff inside of that green bag. >> Okay. the backpack over here. Okay. She just decided to walk out. I stopped her, asked for her back here. More information revealed she's with the mom and grandma here. Mom and grandma did not see me bringing her from quite a sales floor yet. Okay. So, they're completely out of the loop on that. On camera, the mom is putting stuff in her backpack / backpack as well. I don't know if she walked out with it or not. When we asked for her back here, that's where our focus went. Looks like the mom is potentially walking around looking for her, who's obviously detained in here. Okay. So, How old are you? 15. That's alcohol. Put it in your backpack. My grandma my them. They put it in your backpack? >> Yeah. So, where's mom and grandma at now? So, grandma's outside. While speaking with the grandmother, officers observed a car containing multiple items, including premium beverages, valued at about $400. Hello, Ms. Tamara. How are you? I'm fine. Thank you. You need to come with me. Uh >> Yep. I have your I I I have Yelena and your granddaughter. Okay. You can come with me. I'll take this. Come on. Come on. I'm going to go right in these doors up here. You didn't pay for anything? No. So, you just walked out with all this? >> This is from the from the store. You didn't pay for any of it? >> We just did because of the wallet was in the locker. That's it. Mm. That's not really a good excuse. This was a gift that I did. You should have waited inside the store with the stuff though. Absolutely. That's It's my fault. I'm so sorry. Is this your backpack or is this backpack belong to Target? >> No. This is not a Target backpack. I'm so sorry. Outside is not a Target. I I don't think it's a crazy question to ask. No. No. I'm so sorry. No, it's not. It's a from Walmart. I'm going to I'm going to open it up and look inside of it, okay? But it's I mean this is this is what's from this store. Yeah. Poncho, is this your poncho? Is this yours? No, this is not. Yeah, it's okay. I'll take your name and then you mind if I look in here? Get this stuff out. Can I get this stuff out? Our stuff there? Yeah. Oh, wow. There's a lot. Okay. You're telling me there's no resale? >> No, there's sale. Guys, I'm telling you there is no resale. This is $10, $10, $9 a bottle. Weird. There's two drinks down there on the bottom too. Stuff on the very bottom and Good haul. Yeah. What's wrong with the healthy free range eggs? The good stuff. Not Not the black box though. Yeah. I'm worried, man. Yeah. [Music] Did you check the backpack? Yeah. Did you look through this one? Yeah, you want to draw that. This is from New York. You live in New York? Okay. So, you're down visiting for the holidays and getting a lot of wine. Okay. This is not for resale or um Oh, I did. That doesn't matter to me. Okay. My apologies. All right. I'll get a receipt for you guys. Okay. Would you mind holding this? Thank you. You're welcome. Is your driver's license out of Florida? Is it a Florida driver's license? I have Florida license. Okay. Notably, the mother admitted that she could not afford to pay for the merchandise, but still attempted to take it in front of her daughter, unintentionally exposing the child to a distorted lesson about values. All right. You don't have any kind of ID, no driver's license, ID card, anything? No. You want to stand out with the other two? I'll question them. All right. Before I ask you any questions, I got to read you something, okay? Before I ask you any questions, I have to read you your rights. Okay? You have the right to remain silent. You understand? You have the right to an attorney. Do you understand? I need a yes or no when I ask you these questions. Okay, I'm going to start over. You need to answer me with a yes or a no, okay? You have the right to remain silent. With these rights in mind, do you want to answer some questions for me? Say yes or no. Do you want to answer some questions for me? Some questions. I need a yes or no. If I ask you questions, are you going to answer questions for me? Okay. I need a yes or a no. Yes. Okay. I'm so sorry. Yeah, I'm so Okay, don't apol- Again, you don't have anything to apologize to me for. You didn't do anything to me. You did something to the Target store. Okay? Walk me through what happened. This is last time. This is This is the first time and the last time. I Okay, there's a whole lot of stuff in there. Regardless, we'll we'll get to that, okay? What Talk Talk me through what happened. You came to Target. What happened? Came to Target. Then we saw you know I said maybe some uh visiting mom, you know, that's just getting the Black Friday sale. Just opportunity to get some gifts for the family. Mhm. For the business as I said, business partners. Okay. Because we have a party usually, you know, Christmas party and other, you know, just get them after the family holiday. So, inside that what's the best, you know, just for the party to have the wine. Okay. It's not a lot of hardly drink anything. Just it's something. But when you get things at a store, you know you're supposed to pay for them, right? >> course. Of course. This is unquestionable. It's So, let me ask you this. Let me Let me ask you this. Why were you putting alcoholic beverages in your 17-year-old daughter's backpack? Because of yeah, I made it. Okay. Because I am an idiot. If one more time. This is I'm not saying that. This is the worst This is the worst question. This is the worst I don't know how to say it. I I I I I could have said it in worse words than you. Understand my my confusion about being honest then. No, it doesn't matter which bag because this is this is as I said from the here from the home from from home. And I I know you're talking about the bag. I'm talking about all the things that you stole and put in the bags. Yes. I have no, you know, this is this is really What I'm saying is This is the worst you can do, you know, in front of your child. Just because you don't have no conscience. As I said, this is the first time. Do you have money to pay for the items? Really no. No, you don't have the money? I Of course I can afford like three bottles. But not 15 bottles. >> this is that kind of champagne. Oh, yeah, it's really expensive, which is makes it even worse that you're saying you can't afford it, yet you're going to steal it. The mother partially acknowledged her mistake, while the grandmother continued to justify the situation with explanations such as leaving her wallet in the car, the child not pushing the cart, and personal health concerns. Because of wallet in the car and I stay there and she go back to pay. >> Okay. That's what she told me. >> So, why were you putting things in your granddaughter's backpack? And this is the same thing. If you So, you put them in your granddaughter's backpack? >> one Yeah, one bottle. Give it one bottle. One bottle. Okay. Because >> Why did you put it in the backpack? I put because she doesn't have a push car. I think she is uh you Anyway, she is a paid from the box. Sometimes I use if I use a backpack, sometimes I put it in a go to registry and took everything. It's not big sale. >> you took all the stuff that was in the bag Let me finish. All the stuff that was in the bag in the cart that you had with you out at the car, But she told me we go to pay. Come back she >> Why did you take it out of the store? This I don't know. It looks like That's stealing. Why you say it's stealing? Because you have Let me Let me finish. Because you have things that belong to the store. You walked out of the store to your car with the stuff. >> No. I was without anything. When I found you at the car She pushed it have a car. I walked without anything. She told me wait, I have to go to see the granddaughter. That's what she told me. But when I found you out Let Let me When I found you out there >> Yes. Okay. >> That's what I'm going to right now. >> Okay. Hold on. In the end, all three generations had to face the consequences of their choices. Stand up for me. I didn't take anything. Except the backpack that was on your back when you walked out of the store. Forget about that. Turn around put your hands behind your back. There's a video of you walking out with the backpack on your back with a bunch of bottles of wine. Just only one. Just only one bottle. One only one. No, stealing is stealing. Don't apologize to me. You didn't steal from me. Yes. Yes, someone is coming. Who's coming? [Music] Your dad's coming? Her dad? Okay. So I am going to give these to all three of you. Yes, sir. [Music] How do you spell Niveah? N I V E N I V E H. She used to What's your last name? What's your date of birth? Um 6/20/2021. Well, they said they've been she's been with them for 20 minutes. So, and they were just concerned for your guys' safety. Guys, she They opened the door and yelled at you guys for about 20 minutes, and you guys weren't answering, so she was concerned if you guys were in. >> They opened the door? They said the door was open. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I don't understand. It could be one of those things that where you can turn it, and they can't actually open. >> These are plastic knobs on door knobs. Do you guys have your licenses on you? Yeah. Any chance you want to go grab them? The young mother was quick to defend herself. "This has never happened before." A classic excuse for recurring irresponsibility. Are we going to be arrested? What's up? Are we going to be arrested? I'm uh This is never This has never ever happened before. I No, okay. I don't know how in the world she opened the doors. Yeah, what time What time did you guys go to bed? And what was the last time you saw her? >> We had taken a nap with her. That's why I don't understand like that >> Okay, she was sleeping with you guys? >> Usually she would wake me up. This has never ever happened. Usually she wakes me up and lets me know, "Hey, Mommy." Or, you know, she'll let me know if she's hungry or if she I'm a very alert mom. You're okay. I'm a bad mom. I don't know. This has never happened? No, this isn't She's never walked outside of the house before or anything like that? >> The only one time that she did was 4th of July cuz we were over at their house for Well, I have a another neighbor of the like a street over, and we were at their party Okay. We had stopped at their house for a little bit cuz we just cut through the corner like in your backyard cuz it's right over there. And I had came home. We both had came home, and I just changed both of our outfits cuz we were both in bathing suit, and they didn't have a pool or anything, and I just wanted to get out of the bathing suits, and I had the door was left open like this, and she had just I mean, I had eyesight of her though, and she ran over to the neighbor's house. >> Okay. So, that was You know, I watched her that time. But this time like this This has never happened. Yeah. Do you Do you understand I mean, she's a 3-year-old child that's like about a foot of water. A child can drown in 3 or 4 inches of water. Do you understand how just that can be? Do you mind talking Do you mind talking to my partner here for a second? She's never gone outside by herself before. Well, except that one time. A statement that starts off firm as a nail in the wall, only to pull the nail out with its own hand. It's happened before. Now it's happened again. And who's to say it won't happen next time? Today was lucky, but luck doesn't wait around forever. I got to ask you a few questions. Okay. Before I do, I'm going to read you your rights. That doesn't mean you're in trouble. Are you arresting me? I have to come up to with that conclusion. I'm just going to read you your rights, just a formality. I don't know where my shoes are. My computer I can't I've never been away from her like that. I can't like this never happened. I swear. Okay. >> But do you understand the We're going to work through that together. So, we're trying to get through the questioning and I promise you we'll find her alive. This is I'm Deputy Coma. The reason why I'm here is obviously this incident that happened with your daughter. And these are your rights. You have the right to remain silent and anything you say may be used as evidence against you. You have the right to talk to an attorney and have him or her with you at now or at any time during questioning. If you're not afforded an attorney, one will be appointed to represent you. If at any time you wish to stop talking or have an attorney present, all questioning will be stopped at your request. Do you understand these rights? With these rights in mind, are you willing to talk to me? Yes, sir. All right. Okay. At what time was the last time you saw your child? We went to sleep maybe I mean we we usually don't take late evening naps, but I I just hurt my neck the other day when I was putting up the cameras and fell off the ladder, so my neck's been She was in the bed with us and we just we were watching a movie and we just fell asleep, but um probably we fell asleep at least like like maybe right at 6:00. Okay. Okay. And the child I'm sorry I forgot the child's name. Naveah. Naveah. All right. Naveah was with you in the bed when you fell asleep around 6:00. >> she was literally laying on us. She She That's why I don't understand. She's never came out of the door like this. She's never like Okay. freaking no. This is just a mess. I literally just got this pool yesterday and I was going to take it down cuz when I went to put it up it the top of it doesn't blow up, but I still let her play in it like earlier today before it started raining just to get get some energy out and stuff cuz we don't really come outside like that because the bugs are so bad. All right. So, the pool the pool was filled all day. You didn't fill it today at all. It was filled yesterday. >> No, it it was filled yesterday and then I brought her but I didn't drain it out yesterday cuz I was going to bring her back out to play in it today, but when I realized the thing wasn't the top part wasn't blowing up it doesn't hold sustainably like it would if it would blow up. So, I still let her play in it a little bit today and then we just brought her in the house. She played in it for maybe like 2 hours earlier, but I but I sat outside and watched Yes. I would never let her do that unsupervised cuz I I've seen things that can happen like that and that's why I just don't understand because she's never came out of the house like this without like the one time that she ran over to the neighbor's house and I had view of her. Yeah. You're mentioning that happened July 4th, right? Yes. Okay. Oh, so now it's the turn of some mysterious thief to be blamed. Yes, he's the one who broke the door and nearly the child. When you woke up, who woke up first? Was it him or you? And noticed that she wasn't in bed. He did and I I literally woke up as he was walking outside to talk to you and whichever one of you was up here I just ran out the door when I saw Okay. >> Yeah. And and you woke up at what time? Uh it was like 6:30. Okay. When I about 6:30 when I saw that when I woke up and saw that you guys were that whichever one of you were here was out here and he was walking out to the end of the driveway. This never happens. Okay. Never happens. And are you the biological mother of Naveah? Yes. Okay. Who is he to Naveah? Uh he's he's my boyfriend. Naveah's dad isn't in the picture. Yeah. No. >> Okay. He's your boyfriend. Is he is he to you like a caretaker to Naveah as well? What do you mean as a like? Like is he a caretaker like if you were if you leave the house does he watch her? >> No. No. No. I don't I didn't I I don't leave my daughter with anybody. No. Okay. Has she ever been You say that pool's recent recently new. Yeah, I I literally just bought it yesterday. Okay. And you say she has she has not done this be- besides on July 4th. Yeah, she's never done this besides on July 4th. When it happened on July 4th, I have a carpet right at my front door and it's not easy it's not easy to pull the door open. >> But somebody had I don't even know, but somebody had tried to break in to the house and they're like the door jam is broken and that's the only reason I'm thinking that she might have been able to open the door. >> Okay. But I like this has never happened. >> Is is that door is that door locked ever? >> Yeah, I I keep it locked, but I've I'll just have to get with the little handle thing that goes on the door knob and then I'm still going to get a chain to go on the top of it to lock it from the inside cuz this like I said this is this is not happening. I don't know if it's just because we got the pool and she wanted to come outside and play in it, but that's not like This has never happened. I don't let her get out of my view like that. Yeah. All right. And is the door like traditional like twist knob to open it or is it just like a simple pull? >> No, you you got to twist it to open it, but the I usually lock the screen door too cuz she doesn't know how to lock it. So, she's she's on the door handle's low. She within arm's reach of the door handle. Have you ever seen her reaching for it beforehand? No, she doesn't she doesn't do this. She doesn't open the doors in my house and usually when we take a nap and she wakes up she'll she'll wake me up, but I I don't know. It's just my I don't ever let this happen. This has never happened before. I cannot lose my child. No matter how sacred maternal love may be, saying I can't live without my child still can't twist the law. Thankfully, the police stood firm, so at least the children could still be saved before they collapsed along with the adults. We're not in the business of preventing a mother from being with her child. We don't make those decisions, but since a juvenile is involved we have to contact DCF. No, I can't And they will do their investigation as well. And they will reach out to you. They will talk to her. They will talk to him. They will talk to anyone involved. I can't be away from her. Please don't. Okay. I've never left her side besides when she's at daycare. Okay. And you said that she usually wakes you up when she wakes up. >> If I'm still asleep, yeah, but this rarely happens. I just my neck's been hurting. I literally set the camera up the other day and I fell off of the ladder and I and broke my neck back in 2022 in a car accident in Indiana. It's just kind of like I don't It was so so bad and she said something about Mommy, I want to take a night night. So, she curled up in the bed and we fell asleep with I said it was normal like any other time. None of this ever happened and I don't even know why she came out of the door like that. It's not her fault. I should have Nothing like this ever happened. Well, I mean she's all right. You're all right. So, everyone here is all right. This is not okay. No. I understand, but everyone's safe right now. So, just take a deep breath. Take a deep breath. Do you have any questions for me? Cuz I'm going to talk I'm going to talk to him. I just don't want to be away from my daughter like that. I don't like this never happens. If I get arrested I don't have any money to keep her and I don't I'm sorry, but I don't trust any man to keep my daughter like that. I don't care. Okay. You don't leave her with anybody unless she's at daycare. She's always with me. I've never been away from her. Okay. Do you mind you grabbing him for me so I can talk to him? Ironically, her boyfriend was of no help. Coldly stating he wasn't the child's guardian. She was willing to risk her child for a relationship only to find that when she needed someone to stand up for her, no one even bothered. I did. What did she say? She said she she said no. Okay. She doesn't want me to talk to him. Okay. Okay. And you can still talk. Thomas. Yeah, honey. Yeah. Yeah. But I think as far as I'm still on it. >> It's your fine as far as if she's not considered a guardian. I'm just here. Okay. What's happening now? Yeah. Cuz I'm going I'm going to do the same as I did with her. This is just a formality. You're not in any trouble. I'm going to read you your rights, all right? As you can tell, no one's in handcuffs. Just something we have to do. I'm just court of law and >> Oh yeah, I know cuz somebody else actually didn't do that from y'all team. That's how my charges got dropped. All right. I'm Deputy Coma. My inquiry here is just figuring out what happened with Naveah and how she got away. These are your rights. You have the right to remain silent and anything you say may be used as evidence against you. You have the right to talk to an attorney and have him or her with you now or any time during questioning. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to represent you. If at any time you wish to stop talking or have an attorney present, all questioning will be stopped at your request. Do you understand these rights? With these rights in mind, are you willing to talk to me? All right. Who are you in terms of a family picture? Are you dating Cassidy? >> Yeah. Okay. Okay. Does Cassidy ever leave Naveah with you alone? Are you a caregiver at at all and by any means? Only if she has to do something like like something outside or uh Okay. Okay. She doesn't Does she get out much? Does she like to go Not really, no. Okay. All right. So, you you know and how long have you been with Cassidy? 2 months. 2 months. Okay. So, you don't really consider yourself a caregiver caregiver at all. I'm not going to say I don't care. Yeah. Yeah. No. No. No. I'm not saying you don't care. I'm just saying in terms of like guardianship. guardianship. I mean I guess not. Okay. Fair enough. Fair enough. Um so, what time did you guys fall asleep? >> Um And were all you guys in the same room? Literally in the same room. What time it is? I'll say about 5:00 maybe. Like around 5:00 or 4:00 maybe. I'm not sure, but we literally just fell asleep. It was just And what happened before you guys fell asleep? Were you guys doing something? Watching something? Yeah, we were. We were watching something. She was with us. Like she was laying down with us like going to sleep with us. In room. In your the bedroom is to far left of the house. Yeah. Okay. Did at any point you hear or anything as Naveah was getting up and out of the bed? No. She usually would shake us or just say something, but she didn't say nothing. It's only because of that thing. That's it. Yeah. That's literally it. Like Yeah. And when when was that purchased? Yesterday. Yesterday? All right, cool. What time did you guys wake up and realize Nivea wasn't in the room with you guys? About 30 minutes ago. So Okay. And you immediately Yeah. All right. Did you look around the house and I knew she wasn't going to be in the house cuz I didn't hear nothing. It was too quiet. So I just went straight outside. Okay. And that's when I you saw me walking over to you and I saw you walking around. You're obviously looking You're obviously For just one moment of Cassidy Rain was charged with child without great bodily a third-degree felony under Florida statute 827.03 and booked into the Flagler County Jail. Her bond was set at $2,500 and according to records, she posted bail later that same day. We will work that out. Just give us one second, okay? We'll let you take make a phone call, okay? Just give us one sec. I'll hold your phone. Okay, wait. Wait. What about me? I didn't even get to I'm sorry. Child The child I don't want to keep seeing your handcuffs, okay? I know you want to say I Listen. Get You want to see your kid? 100% I would too, but I don't want her to see you in handcuffs, okay? So then you you can't walk me over there just uncuff me to hug her possibly? Once her coffee gets up to him I'm just holding him, man. What's your coffee? You have shoes? Sandals? Yeah. Okay. Hey. Hey, sorry. Can you just get her sandals real quick? I'm going to turn your phone off cuz you're at 36%. I don't want it to to jail and then you get walking in vanilla. All right. This story is a wake-up call for those adults who still think it's just a short nap. A child just starting out in life and not yet able to tell what's dangerous was placed in a life-or-death situation all because the adults fell asleep. Welcome to Virginia where car doors fly open, children are put at risk, and the mother is too busy proving that she did nothing wrong. The door came open and then I pulled over in this parking lot to close it. On August 27th, 2022, police responded to an emergency call about a woman driving with a rear passenger door wide open while two innocent children sat inside. At the scene, she kept making excuses, blaming it all on a broken door, then flipped, got combative, and scowled like someone caught red-handed. How you doing, man? I was driving on the highway. With the door open >> The door came open and we did not do it on purpose. That's why I pulled over in this parking lot. The amount of time that the door was Was this the door that came open? >> Yes, sir. I'll just hang tight for one second, ma'am. You can If you need to crack this, you can. >> Yes, sir. Nevertheless, the door swung open and that's why I pulled over in this parking lot to close the door. Never hurt my children. How dare you disrespect me in front of my child? So we're going to call that the van was traveling southbound and that the door was wide open and people could see kids inside. So it It comes off You know what it is. My kids are safe, sir. My kids are fine. Is there like something wrong with the van? You're good, man. Just hang tight. You can point it out. Yeah, he's he's hanging tight. Just sit in the car and close the door, please. Yes, sir. Did y'all see something was Is there something wrong with the van? Yeah, she did. And that's why we're going to the auto shop to get it fixed right now. The door came open and then I pulled over in this parking lot to close it. He's saying that the door was open a long time ago. So unless he has proof, legitimate proof, that is a lie. That's why I pulled over in this parking lot. >> I'm Okay, you can be loud with him, but I'm talking to you nicely. Like I said, I'm figuring out what's going on. I just got here. Where did you say the door came open at? >> Coming down this road. Coming right down this road. It came open. I pulled over to close the door and that's when he pulled up behind me. Okay. So unless he has it on video camera Well, we have a witness that called in. That's That's what we're saying. No, you That is not the case. I don't think anybody would just randomly call for a door open. No, it has issues. >> Yeah, and I I I'm not disagreeing if the door has issues, that's one thing. Okay, sir. We'll send you the information. This is his stop. I don't know what I'm just going off of what the call was. I'm making sure everything's fine. Kids are in seat belts. I Yeah, they are. I would never And I'm not saying you wouldn't. He did. You don't have to make this No, you're good, man. You're good. Like I said, I I'm I'll speak to him. Like I said, we're just going off of a witness that called in saying the door was open traveling down the roadway. So just hang tight for a second. I'm waiting for him. Like I said, I'm just standing by. I'm his partner. It's so hot, man. Can I open this door, please? I I can't have you open up the door. I'm going to have this one open. I I understand, man. But just for now, we just got to hang tight. Just see what's going on. The mother, Forehand, initially seemed willing to cooperate. But the moment officers asked for information for Child Protective Services, she flat out said no. As if being a mom gave her the right to reject any law that felt inconvenient. Ma'am, how long have you been having problems with the door if you don't mind me asking? I do. I'm not answering any questions. Okay. Sir, what's taking so long? It's hot out here. >> I get it's hot, but I they're talking. So I don't know what's going on. I'm just saying Well, don't get out now because I'm telling you because he has you pulled over, you're you can't get out. Did he She's trying to get out of the vehicle. You don't tell me to stay in my vehicle. I don't think so. I like to know what's going on. There's no incident. Door came open. I pulled over. [Music] Give me my ticket so I can go. Okay. We also need to give the information to I don't think so. All right. We need to contact Child Protective Services What's the nature of the problem? What do you think is the problem? Door unlatched. I'm not arguing with you guys about it, okay? You need to stay here with me. There is a problem that is going on, okay? Do you understand that? So what? The door came open while her children are in the vehicle. We are mandated to report it to Child Protective Services and let them know that this happened. Whether it was a mistake or whether it was a mistake or not, okay? So we need your ages and your names to get this information to Child Protective Services. We absolutely have to get that information. If you don't give us that information, we'll charge you with obstruction. Are you going to give us that information? No. Okay. Then we'll charge you with that. It's just going to Now, before you can get this sworn Once we give you the information, right? Does that mean we can Y'all call in them, then we can leave and then we can call them ourselves and straighten the story out what happened? What the Okay, so the way that it works is that yeah, we call Child Protective Services, we let them know what's going on, and then they'll Our time is your own investigation. We're not We're not trying to say oh It's our job to report it to Child Protective Services. Virginia law is clear. Car doors must be securely closed and function properly. 19 VAC 30-70-250 and operating a vehicle with defective equipment is illegal. Section 46.2-1003. While the law doesn't directly state that doors must remain closed while driving, taken together, these regulations mean Forehand committed a serious equipment safety violation. I'm just going to crack it, man. I usually don't do that, but you're being cooperative. So like I said, I I'll work with you if you work with me. Is this the first time it's happened with the kids in the car? Is the door Okay. Yeah. And so Child Protective Services, they know that our car is having issues. So it's not like they don't know. So before you guys need to report it, then it's not like they don't know that we have issues with the Yeah. I mean, we'll make it make them aware too that you're going to get it fixed, too. Like I said, we're we're not trying to make it things hard on y'all, but at the same time we have a job to do. I just want to say don't come for my children and No, and you're a mother. You should be. 100% 100% I don't blame you. At the same time when somebody sees you driving down the road and they may have saw it literally right after it happened. It could have been less than 5 minutes it happened. I'm pretty sure it was cuz as soon as it happened, I was trying to find somewhere to pull over. So when we get that call, we just have to literally make contact and make If we see it open, make sure everything's fine. But if you're going to get it fixed, then that I mean that plays a big deal, too. Child Protective Services know about this car. How dare they give me a ticket for the car? Because at the end of the day, it can be a safety hazard. And I know you know that. It can be a safety matter. Like if this is >> Yeah, well, this is the first time it happened. Otherwise, I wouldn't. Yeah. Of course it would play a whole different deal if the kids were in seat belts and this was open. That would That would have been looked at a lot different. Yeah. Yeah. No, cuz you'd be surprised how many people we pull over and the kids aren't in seat belts. I have a question for you though. If it was a Wrangler Jeep cuz it has no doors on it also, would you pull us over also? So with That's I'd have to look into that. I I would, but with it being that's the That's the vehicle and that's the vehicle make, obviously. Most of them Yeah, you can take the doors off. Most of them have the half door. With that vehicle make I I see what you're saying, but at the same time, the vehicle's made for this door to be closed. It says Our vehicle's door's meant to be closed. The door's meant to be closed. It has to be closed. I get what you're saying though. What you say? State law. The door has to be closed. It has to be closed by state law. The door Well, while operating the vehicle and traveling, so for these, yeah, the doors have to be closed. Drive down the roadway with the door open. Yeah, well I understand. I was trying to do that. Yeah, no. I'm not I'm just saying in general. Like you said, same as a Wrangler. Yeah, I mean, you got a You You got a point, but at the same time it it's It's how the vehicles are made, but I I I get what you're saying. I like a T T-Rex. Three wheelers. All right. Y'all just hang tight, okay? They'll be done soon. After arguing to no avail, Forehand accepted a citation with three violations. But instead of staying quiet, she exploded like someone falsely accused, turning the whole situation into a ridiculous performance filled with tears, shouting, and even a Don't you dare accuse me of my child. All right, Ms. Forehand, here's your driver's license. So I've got some citations for you. These are your copies. You're going to be cited three times today. You're going to be cited for reckless driving. That's driving with the door open. And you're going to have two citations for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, one for each child. All right? So this is all >> What does that mean contributed to a delinquency of a minor? So danger, okay? So, you've got a court date of September 14th at 8:15. Counselor, >> me with putting my children in danger on purpose when you know what I told you, the door swung open by itself by accident. You still charge your mother for putting her children in Yes, I listened to what you said. I will see you in court because that is not the truth. >> Well, we've got information that the doors were open all the way from Short Lane. You guys were in the in the gas station up there, you left the gas station, the doors were open all the way down 17. I saw you with the door open, then when I pulled out, that's when you closed the door and pulled in here. So, we'll that I'm going to give you your court date and then we'll talk about it in court. So, September 14th, 8:15 here in Gloucester County Court, that's going to be your counter determination for all three of these. I won't be there at this one, this is just going to be for you to tell the court if you have an attorney or you need them to provide you for an attorney. Then, they'll set you a trial date, a hearing date that we will all be in court. So, these are your copies of all three, all the information on here is correct. What I need from you is I need you to sign all three of these, it's not an admission of guilt, it's just saying that you understand that you have a court date and that you will appear in those court dates. So, I'll give it to you one at a time. I'll give them to you one at a time cuz they're carbon copy. So, right here at the X, okay? Shame on you. Hold on. Hey, ma'am, Shame on you. Don't snatch from me. Shame on you for TRYING TO SET UP my children. Listen, I need you to settle down, okay? I need you to settle down. How dare you say I was trying to We'll talk about it in court, okay? You want me to settle down? >> you have to settle down. You said I WAS TRYING TO MY CHILDREN. >> say you were trying to your children. >> That's pretty much what you wrote me a ticket for. Miss Forehand, you need to calm down or we're going to have social services come up here All right. to deal with the kids. Just settle down, just sign the paper. Not in front of the kids. Drive. Give me the paper. So, I I need you to do this a certain way because they're carbon copy and I don't want you to sign through them, okay? Just one at a time. Right here on the X on this one. We're going to do it three times. You can't sign on top of them cuz it'll go through, okay? So, sign right here at the X. It's not an admission of guilt, it's just saying >> to me. It's not an admission of guilt, it's just saying that you will go to court, that's all. It's just stating that you promise to appear in court, that is it. Okay? The pen is right there, you put the pen down. >> Give me the pen, now. Ma'am, you you put the PEN DOWN. >> THE PEN. GIVE me the paper so I can sign it, please. >> You got to calm down. I am calm down. I'm calm down. YOU SAID I WAS TRYING TO HURT MY KIDS AND PUT THEM IN DANGER. YOU GOT one more time before we have social before we have social services come here. No, no, no, no. Okay? Are you going to settle down so you can sign these summonses? This is the only time I'm going to ask you. Give me the paper. Give me the clipboard. You're allowed to be upset, you're just not allowed to act like this. Just sign on the X. >> want to. You don't control me. >> Not in front of your kids, not on camera. You just You pretty much said enough in front of my children. Sign right there on the X. Same place, on the X. Is he licensed to drive? Miss Forehand, she asked you a question. Is he licensed to drive? >> my vehicle. Same place, on the X. I was asking because if you're this upset, maybe he should drive. Okay, sure. He can drive. As long as he's licensed. At least you didn't write something down, I'll drive it. We've been sitting here long enough and my children are hot. I think he's already been I think he's already been there. Okay, then, he can drive. Excuse me. This car was just in the accident one day ago. The door opened by accident. I would never have my door open for my children to fall out and put them in breakfast. Instead of you taking my word, you decide to take me to court. What's your name? Sewell. It's all on the ticket. >> Good. Okay? This is the one you ran already. Thank you, sir. I apologize for any misbehaving misperceptions that She's mad, you got to understand I understand she's She's allowed She's allowed to be upset. I understand she's upset. All right, drive safe. All right, you're going to need to to subpoena that lady from social services as a witness. Yes. But that's not all. The side story takes us to Walmart, where she was caught failing to fully pay at the self-checkout with her child standing right next to her. This isn't just a legal hazard, it also risks teaching the child to downplay wrongdoing and blurs the lines between right and wrong, law and morality. Hi. Hi. Hi, love. I need to speak with you again. For what? Can you send him over to the car? I can talk to just you by yourself. It's because something happened at Walmart, you don't need him to hear it. Okay, what happened at Walmart? Do you want to send him with the others? No. Why? Ma'am, it's just going to be Kendra Forehand again. For what, ma'am? I would talk to you, but I just don't want to do it in front of your child, okay? For what? Do what? >> Miss Forehand, I will speak to you, okay? It's going to be just me and you. We're going to wait until you and then I'm going to let you leave. I just have to speak to you real quick and it's about something at Walmart. At Walmart? >> Mhm. Are you kidding me? >> No, ma'am. Okay. Ma'am, one second. Got them in the parking lot, I believe. I'll be there in a four. What's that? Excuse me, wait a minute. Miss Forehand, I told you I would talk to you. I just don't want to do it in front of your child. >> You're going to arrest me for something I didn't do? >> to arrest you. I'm not going to arrest you. So, what do you need to speak to me need to speak to you and I don't want to do it in front of your child. Okay. But I'll speak to you right now in front of your child, which is what I was trying to avoid earlier. However, you have now been banned from Walmart, you are absolutely not allowed to come back. If you come back, you will be charged with trespassing and they're probably going to charge you with larceny because they have you on record of stealing through self-checkout. Okay. Now, you've been told, so if you come back, you'll be trespassed. Do you understand? No, dude. Can't come back. I'm fine. I'm sorry. But You're welcome to leave now. I told you I wasn't going to arrest you. Put your hands behind you. Please. I'm at Walmart. Don't follow behind me. We're not going to. If you want to have her walk towards the the car, I will speak to you by yourself. What's this going on? Walmart asked us to respond. I had no idea who I was responding to >> Okay. and they've asked for her to be trespassed, she's no longer allowed to be on the property. If she comes back, she will be charged with trespassing and that is because there's going to be an open case for larceny. For larceny? What did she steal? I I don't know that, I didn't get those I didn't get those particulars because you guys are leaving, so I had to come and catch her. Mr. Smith? I don't know, it's not that I won't tell you, it's I don't know. I think if he wanted to tell you guys something, I think he I think he did steal something. Okay, we'll just have to add it to whatever case you guys are working. When the law finally caught up with her, Forehand was charged with shoplifting or altering merchandise under $1,000 and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Under Virginia law, she faces 1 to 2 years in prison, fines ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 and a $5,000 bond to be released. We can't change the mother in this video, but we can change ourselves, the way we parent, the way we lead because every action we take becomes a mirror for the generation watching us. Today's story comes to a close, but its lessons remain. From poor decisions and seemingly harmless choices to moments of protecting a child under extreme pressure, all of it reminds us that children are always watching, always learning and directly shaped by the actions of adults.
