Back up. >> What is they going to do? >> Take my hand. Take my finger. Let's walk where you came from. Okay. >> Watching how this [music] 10-year-old speaks to the police makes us reflect on whether adults are truly guiding children in the right way. >> Okay. Well, then I have a right to call someone to come and pick me up, right? >> Yeah. Yeah. We'll make sure you go hand. >> Why would you have to do this? I have done nothing wrong. And you know that. >> You have a warrant for battery life strangulation. domestic childhood. >> You also be arrested for child. >> When the law steps in, excuses fade, revealing a hard truth. Children often mirror adult behavior and feel its impact. That night, the hospital did more than provide urgent care for a child. It also became the place where troubling patterns of parental behavior came to light. >> She had reported they came from a bell mom and admitted that she hit with a belt. >> Was that to you? >> Yeah. On April 23rd, 2025, police quickly responded to the hospital after a report about a young girl showing concerning physical signs possibly linked to her home environment. As child protection staff began required procedures, the mother became verbally and emotionally tense, leading officers to step in. >> I ask question, how long is it going to be? It takes more than a simple check. This is the problem. We're not trying to ask questions. >> I already contacted security. >> Is the lady out of there? Uh, no, she's still in there. So, the problem is that we're trying to get >> So, the lady that's the mom of the child is still in there. It's called >> Yeah, she said they holding against her will. That's what they holding both of She wants to leave. Who's there to ask questions? Got the answers looking for. She's seen the doctor. How long? She got no broken bones. She's not my nurse. I know them well. >> This these doors are all locked to this building. We can't get them. If you got something or you don't. Either you do or you don't. Most likely you don't. Put one little spot. You got another spot. You got We all got I got mine too. Look, I got this. I got this. Now holding traffic. Come to the doctor. >> There we go. All right. Lady that was causing issues still here. >> Yeah. >> DCFS taking custody of the kid. She's not letting them. She's throwing up trying to >> Yeah. >> Talk to. >> Yeah. Hold on. Stand back. Trust them. We all Okay. She Okay. She is okay. >> I just got here so I don't know. >> These people was trying to hold me here. Now we got the >> What's your name, sweetheart? >> Yeah. I like your dress. >> It's a good color. >> They said that I could get on the family. So basically, I can release them to you cuz I don't trust them holding my kid. So my kid will be released to my own. >> At this point, we've taken protective custody of her. >> You don't need to take the backs up. >> Hey, hey, hey. We're not going to do that. >> No. Right. No. At this point, you're stepping away from her. You're not going to >> What you mean step away from her? >> Step over there. You're going to go in handcuffs. >> I'm trying. I'm trying to listen. And he got his hands on me. >> Step over there. You're going to go in handcuffs. >> What is they going to do? >> I'm being nice with you. You can step over there and go in handcuffs. >> Trying to figure What is they going to do? A >> man. You ain't going nowhere. Get the [ __ ] off of me. Fat mother. You holding my arm. Don't mean that. You putting it tight. Don't mean >> What is you doing, stupid? Let me go. >> Stop, bro. >> You got your head up. Get the off my neck. You fat. >> Not on your neck. >> Yes, you is on my head and my neck. You ain't got to. I'm handcuffed already. Let me go. >> She's going to jail. >> Get my glasses. [ __ ] me. You just a with a badge. >> Calm down. Listen. Listen. >> I'm trying to calm down, man. This little cop. You I'm trying to calm down. Take my kid. [ __ ] out of here. You think you feel so strong, huh? Trying to body a woman. Y'all weak as hell. Don't do all that. You ain't got to do that. Don't tell me to stop. He doing too much uping on me and you ain't doing >> I'm trying to calm down. >> Hold on. You get a station. Oh no, whatever. >> Y'all think y'all got him? >> Do you want your uncle to take your property? >> Yes. I want him to take everything. >> What raised greater concern was that professionals observed multiple indicators suggesting ongoing safety concerns. >> Both these cell phones, ma'am? >> Yes. Give him everything. >> Stand by with him and then uh grab the same. >> I'm going to go talk to >> So you show up here and mom and juvenile are in >> and they're in a room together in the room trying to talk to both of them. daughter like walks up to me with her arms out trying to give me a hug and then mom like snatches her by her arm, yanks her back and like jerks her body. I was like, "Yeah, we're not going to do that in front of me, especially when DCFS take your kid." So I was aware of that. >> Yeah. Oh yeah. I was >> So more or less they were going to take Cel Mom knew about it. She was making verbal comments to the kid. >> Well, I was like, "Ma'am, you're going to step across the room away from your kid or you're going to go in handcuffs." One told her repeatedly told her repeatedly tried to guide her and try to put her hand in handcuffs. She kept flopping all around and tens up her arms and so what you hook her on so far? Tag bad and what else? got. So the kid kids kid away. >> All right. So I had a chance to talk to you cuz all the obvious we all saw that kind of transpired. So >> that kiddo in there we were having her seen for some mom with a bell kind of going smoothly. We were just having her checked out and then mom kind of tried to leave with her and then at that point that's when you guys got called. She had multiple on different planes of her body and different stages of healing and stuff. >> So that's the reason why you guys were taking protective custody. >> Is there a previous call on that? No. >> Like nothing from PD yet. So there's a messy battery that we need to report then. >> In fact, I was about to notify you guys of it and then she tried to leave. So >> how did you get a report? >> So we get a report. >> I'm sorry. I'm saying like from school or otherwise. >> Yeah, she went to school with so >> she's able to get a guy's name too. >> Um yeah, >> we had to keep him out of the way. >> I still don't have I don't even have her name yet either. >> And he was the one encouraging her to leave on the phone to leave. Um his last name. >> All right. So she went to school with injuries. >> Yep. >> So essentially how did the get connected to being with a belt? She had reported they came from a belt. Mom had submitted that she with a belt. >> Was that to you? Y >> was that today or? >> So she's saying that she didn't give an exact day. She said that couple days ago kiddo wasn't cleaning her own. She her with the belt. Um kiddo was in the process of running away as she was doing it. That's why they're kind of scattered around her. There are multiple different ins and different stages of healing that we're investigating here, but mom's only owning up to doing it once, >> like just one one occasion or >> just one occasion is what she's supposed to do. But she does have all >> Where are all the at pictures of them? >> Okay, you this one under her ear kind of ones that are hole >> inside the hospital. The child also shared challenging experiences at school involving interactions with both teachers and classmates. >> You were the little girl with >> She's in room five with the provider. >> All right. Thank you. Hey, I was gonna make sure that you're okay. >> I told you he was nice. She said she was trying to give you a hug. >> I know. >> She was worried about mom and I said mom's okay. So, she was just a little angry and needed some help getting calm down. >> Do you have any questions for us or can we help you with anything? >> I was trying to tell you that when I was at school, guess what? >> What's that? >> Tom just say, "Stop looking at me, stupid." And I didn't like that. >> You didn't like that? >> No, I didn't like that because that was so mean. >> Yeah. And after that, I was raising my hand, but the teacher didn't call me. >> What's your favorite class in school? >> The girls keep my eyes on me, too. >> What's that? >> Those girls keep on me, too. >> This is our opportunity to rat out the boys. >> Yeah, you got boys at school. I'll tell them stop being mean to you. >> Yeah. >> You have a better day. Okay. I'm going to read you Miranda rights. Just listen to them real quick. I'm going to ask you some further questions if you're willing to talk to us. Okay. >> All right. You have the right to remain silent. Have any rights in mind? You want to speak with me any further? Yeah, unfortunately you got to go to jail today. Okay. >> Why? Because >> so >> because of what? >> Why am I going to jail? >> So the first thing is going to be the the aggravated aggravated battery to me. It's cuz you shoot me. >> I didn't shove you. >> You did shove me away. >> You grabbed me. So I don't >> I was trying I was trying to guide you away from her kid. That's all I was trying to do. >> I was trying to guide me away from my kid. I just told you I didn't want to be away from my kid. >> I I was I wasn't trying to separate her. I was just trying to move you across the room. You can still be in the same room with her. Y'all acting like I'm I'm pranking her. But >> when you up like that in front of me, I kind of have a duty to intervene. Okay. I can't just let that stuff. >> Make sure y'all don't snatch her. So you're going for that. You're going for the resisting arrest and you're going for the >> resist. >> Child domestic battery. >> Ain't no child. I didn't hit her. >> What brought them to the hospital or not the hospital, but the express care? Yeah. >> So whenever we have, we always recommend that a kiddo be seen. So I kind of told her we need to go have the kiddos seen and evaluated for it. So you went over to talk to her about the house >> and then basically came over here. >> Yep. >> Um can I just see the pictures one more time? We have an idea of when these newer occurred. >> The newest one, the way it was kind of described. Obviously younger kiddos aren't too good at dates. It was kind of seeming like this weekend. >> She said those were the ones from the builder. >> This is the one that's from the build. This one down here. There were just older ones that we had seen whenever we actually got under better lighting here. >> All right, man. Appreciate it. Thanks, guys. >> Let's hang out this door to your left. The mother was charged with aggravated [music] battery of a peace officer, domestic battery, injuring a dependent, and resisting arrest. Under Illinois law, she could face up to 7 years in prison. Early recognition of concerning signs and timely coordination with authorities not only help protect children, but also remind society of the shared responsibility to create a safe environment for them. How does a child absorb the behavior of adults? [music] This story offers part of the answer. trying to figure out the problem here because >> I'm crying right now. I don't think we have a problem. >> So, why would we need to contact? >> On June 1st, 2024, officers conducted a traffic stop after a vehicle failed to fully stop at a sign and had tinted windows. When approached, the driver, the child's mother, reacted sharply and declined to provide information, expressing that she felt disturbed. Her strong emphasis on personal rights unintentionally created tension with standard safety procedures. Hello. How are you doing? Can you lower the window for my partner? Who is my partner? Can you lower the window for him? Why? Cuz I'm asking you to lower the window so he can see what's going on inside. >> Why? >> Cuz I'm asking you to. Can you lower the window? If not, he's going to open the door cuz he can't see inside. >> No, he cannot open my car. >> Step out. Come on. Come on. Come on. Step out the car. >> Why would you be asking me to step out the car? What's the problem? Come on. Get out. >> No, you do not. >> Get out the car, ma'am. >> Get out the car. I'm going to take out the car. Get out the car. I'm going to pull you out the car. >> Get out the car. Pull out the car. Easy that. You're making this difficult. Let's go. Thank you. >> I'm sorry. Just be It's okay, baby. Just chill. >> Come, baby. Come. >> Come over here. Listen. The reason why we're stopping you is cuz you fail to come to a complete stop over there. Third and end up. Are you serious? All four tires need to come to a complete stop. >> Okay. >> And do you have a driver license? Yes, I do. >> You want to give my partner your information, >> ma'am. Ma'am, you stay here. Let me get it for you. >> He said, "Give me give me >> No, he said do you want to give my partner?" >> He can't He can't go in my car. >> Ma'am. Hello. >> Like, that's ridiculous. What the hell is the problem? >> Let's go. Let's go back over. >> I get what you're saying, but come on now. You >> in the car. >> This is Listen, we can stand here and look inside of the car. Anything we see there is plain view. Plain view doctrine. You can look it up. We came to >> Does the doors have to be open then? >> If you could just look in the car, you see it through the windows and the point of the door. >> Go close my car door. >> You can stay there. >> Yo, ma'am, relax. >> What are you doing? Like, come on, man. >> Stay here. >> You guys are doing way too much. >> We're doing way too much. You pulled me over for practically no reason. I stopped at the stop sign and they pulled you over for the stop sign. Okay. >> Okay. The reason if you want to stand right here, I'll explain everything to you, but as of right now, you guys are making this very difficult. All right. Can you can you get off the phone and listen to me? >> I'm going to record for my safety. >> Yeah, you feel free feel free to record. >> Okay. >> All right. So, he's asking that you roll the windows down because we have no idea who's in the car. We have no idea what are inside of the car. So, it's for officer safety reason. That's why he asked you to do that. If you say, "No, I don't want to," then the partner can open the door to ensure that everything is safe. Not. That's against my rights. I know you can't do that. >> Okay. No. What's your name? >> Am I under arrest? >> You can't do that. >> It's a traffic stop. >> Am I under arrest? >> Do you want to Do you want to identify yourself? >> Am I under arrest? >> It's a traffic stop. So therefore, you have to identify yourself. If you don't, you will be under arrest. >> Is that against the law? >> Yes, ma'am. >> My dark test are against statute. It's a traffic law. Yes, ma'am. >> And they're not even that dark. >> Okay. Can you get the tent meter? And then you also ran the stop sign. All right. We're really not trying to make this a big deal. We really aren't. You took it there. You escalated it. Now we're still trying to deescalate it. I'm asking you for your info so that we can go about the >> I don't choose to identify myself. >> Okay. I'm going to have to place you under arrest in front of your daughter and I don't want to have to do that. And then we're going to have to start fail to identify. You're obstructing our investigation. >> Arrest anybody. >> You're obstructing our investigation. Let's not do this. >> Investigation. What am I under? But what did I do wrong? You have to have an actual emergency or you have to suspect an emergency. There was no emergency and you guys know that. >> You're wrong. >> So So you're saying the only time we can pull a car over is only for an emergency? >> Yes. That's literally what you guys are for. You if you don't have I didn't get if I'm not suspect for a crime, you don't have a right to pull me over. >> I'm going to ask you in 3 seconds. Can you identify yourself if you don't? >> I'm not because that's hands on your back. You're under arrest. Hold it. >> Can I at least call somebody to my >> No. You want to do all of this? No. We're going to call DCF and DCF is going to >> And you know I'm going to take you all to court, right? >> Okay. Everything is being recorded on body camera. >> Yeah. Get my phone. >> Can you give her my phone so she can call? That's horrible. I cannot believe you guys are doing this. >> We can't believe we have to do this. >> Why would you have to do this? I have done nothing wrong and you know that. There is no crime. I can see you arresting me for a crime. I have not committed one crime. >> But you're not. >> Oh my god. This is completely tyrannical. >> What stood out was the girl's attitude toward the adults around her. Her raised voice did not appear random, but seemed to mirror her mother's behavior. >> Can I get my mother's phone so I can call my family members? Because we're trying to arrest my mother. >> Yeah, she we're not trying. She is arrested. >> Okay. Well, then I have a right to call someone to come and pick me up, right? >> Yeah. Yeah. We're going to make sure you're in good hands. >> Okay. So, I'm going to go and and call my sister and my brother and my father so he can come and pick me up. So, can I go ahead and call my get my mother? >> I have your mom's phone. So, just hang tight. Yeah, just hang tight. >> I know her past. >> Hang tight, ma'am. Okay. I know you're trying to act like an adult, but you're not. You're still a kid. All right. So, act like a child. Be respectful. Okay. I don't know what your your mom has taught you, but she hasn't taught you respect. Okay. So, just relax. >> I'm trying to be disrespectful, and I apologize if you get that from me. But >> too late to apologize. >> Okay. Well, then I take my apology. That's what you want. But I would like to call my father. >> Sir, I want to call my father. >> We're going to walk. >> Can you walk with me? You're under arrest. >> I don't want to leave my daughter by herself. >> Ma'am, you should have given me your info. Now it's out of your hands. So, do do you want do you want to give me your info and then I'll give you my info? >> But you understand what you're doing is wrong, correct? >> No, I don't. Okay. All right. Walk follow me. >> Keep walking. This is so wrong. What's your name? I >> Thomas. I'm Detective Thomas. We're all detectives. >> Okay. And you still haven't told me what I'm being arrested for. >> I just I just told you fail to identify, man. >> Failure to identify is not a crime. >> Okay. Obstructing my investigation. >> What investigation into what? What did I do wrong to be investigated? >> Again, no weapons or anything on you. Do you have Are those shorts underneath? >> Yes. >> Okay. believe you have me leaving my 10year-old daughter with people. They are complete strangers. >> Have to see. >> Like this is so wrong. >> You understand us as adults, we we have responsibilities and >> Yes, we do. And you and you know your job. You know your job just like I do. Trust me. >> Put your feet inside. Okay. So, I'm going to explain it to you from the beginning. Okay. >> We were there. I'm quite sure you saw us. You were coming southbound. Southbound on Douglas. Okay. When you came up to Third and Douglas, you didn't make a complete stop at the stop sign. While you were passing us, we saw that you had dark tint on your vehicle. Okay? Those are two traffic infractions that we have every right to pull you over for. Okay? We do a traffic stop. You come to a stop here. My partner comes up to the car before you passes as any good officer would. We ask you to let the back window down because it's dark and we can't see inside. There's many instances where when officers walk up to cars, people shoot at officers shooting. It it does happen. All right. So my offic um my fellow detective, he asked you to do that. You say you didn't want to. So we ask you to get out of the car, which we have every right to. Okay. Also, it goes back to officer safety. We have no idea what's in the car. You get out of the car and I asked you to identify yourself. I explained the two infractions that we had to stop you and you told me essentially that it's not an emergency and therefore it's no investigation going on. So that ma'am is incorrect. It's a traffic stop. It's a lawful investigation. This is all being recorded on my body warn camera. So therefore, this is why you're in handcuffs. The reason you're in handcuffs is because you said you are not identifying yourself. And I explained to you. I said, "If you don't identify yourself, you will be arrested." And you said, "Well, I'm not giving you my information." So from this point, so I placed you in handcuffs and as of right now, you are under arrest. Okay? It's fail to identify or obstruction, whichever whichever route you want to go. That's the name of of the charge. Okay? So your daughter is here. Unfortunately, now DCF is going to have to get involved because you chose to do all of this stuff in front of your daughter, which is something that's not even necessary. Okay. So, um, do you wish to identify yourself now? If not, we're going to take you to the car if we can't identify who you are if the vehicle is not registered to you. >> I identify myself under duress. So, I'll identify myself because I don't want to be I don't want to leave my daughter here. >> Okay. What do you mean by under duress? >> Meaning I'm being forced to do this. So, I'm going to identify myself. This is a traffic stop. Have you been pulled over before? >> Have you been pulled over before? >> I'm going to identify myself. >> Have you been pulled over before? >> Um because I don't want to leave my daughter here by herself. >> So, I'm going to go ahead and identify myself. >> If you're calling DCF on my child, why would I have to identify myself? That's not true. She definitely had >> She didn't have a seat belt on. >> She had on her seat belt. >> My body camera was on. We can review it if you want. >> Exactly. What' you say? Come on, man. Like, this is cool, man. I said I don't want to leave her here. And why are you guys calling DCF if I'm telling you I'm identifying myself? >> If she's not being left here by herself, then >> Am I going Am I being arrested? >> Yes, ma'am. You are. That's why you're in handcuffs. That's why you're in the back of a car. That's why you're separating. >> So, if I'm being arrested anyway, why why would I identify myself? >> Because you have to. If you don't, then you're just going to go to the Palm Beach County jail under Jane Doe and you're going to stand there until you tell them your name. >> I don't get it. Do you have a warrant or something? >> No, I don't. I don't get it. I feel like because this is harassment. >> How is this harassment? I have no idea who you are. You understand what harassment? >> Just like I don't know who you are either, but I have rights. Just because you're a police officer does not mean you can just do whatever you want to do. And I know I didn't commit a crime. >> Yeah. I don't understand how like how can I explain this to you any better? So, >> listen, I can understand if See, I'm not a dummy. You understand? I study law myself. >> You're just misinformed. No, I'm not misinformed. >> You are, ma'am. I'm telling I'm not lying to you. My body camera is recording. >> I get it. >> I'm trying to educate. >> This happens a lot, but I'm not what I I'm not trying to give you a problem, but I know I wasn't being a problem for you guys to be doing all this. >> You committed two infractions. Therefore, we conduct we conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle. When we conduct the traffic stop, the drive driving is a privilege. Okay. The driver is forced. >> I'm not driving. I'm traveling. So, that's another issue. >> Okay. Okay. You're sit back. Alia, tell Nana to come and get my car, please. >> The car is being told. >> Why would my car be towed? For what? >> Verifying the mother's information proved difficult. Notably, the child also showed little willingness to cooperate and reference knowledge of rules and discussions with officers. >> It works out that you're here um because I would be able to hand your sister over to you. Um, unfortunately, your mom failed to identify herself in a lawful traffic stop and refused to over and over again. And she's subsequently arrested for failing to identify herself. >> So, that's where we're at. >> For what? I'm sorry. >> Failing to identify yourself. You know, when uh when we pull someone over, the person does not have the legal and lawful rights. >> Yeah. I'm so sorry. >> So, so hold on a second. You didn't know that we have to identify the driver of a vehicle that's driving a car? Um I've heard or whatever, >> but I never heard of somebody just getting arrested because they >> Well, what happens if they say no? Do we just let them go for not give them a ticket? >> Uh warrant or whatever. >> Who are we warning? Who are we warning? Basically, if you have any suspicions of anything like that, >> nope. I don't know who taught you that, but whoever taught you that just got your mom arrested. >> I don't know. Whatever. But she studies law. >> Okay. Well, >> she knows more than you. >> Well, she's going to jail. Just hang tight over here. Um >> we're not done yet. We'll we'll hand her off to you. Do you have a a driver's license on you? >> Yes, I do. I could uh >> Can I also call >> Do you have your driver's license on you? >> Yeah, I do. >> I know. I'm She's untreated. >> Can I get my purse out the car if they're going to hold the car? >> We'll relax. We'll get everything when we tell you it's okay to do so. Okay. >> Um I don't really feel comfortable situation. >> Well, obviously cuz your mother doesn't know how to act. Can you can you write down her name and date of birth and stuff so I can give it to uh DCF please? >> Thank you. Department of Children and Families, man. >> Do you do you know who that is? >> I'm not really know I will. Basically, Department of Children and Families. Anytime uh a parent or a child is involved, DCF comes and basically they'll do their investigation to ensure that the child is being treated fairly. >> My mother treated me very well. >> No, I I understand that. But unfortunately, she's being arrested by us right now. >> In front of you. >> In front of you. So, we have to send this to DCF. It's making it a lot worse than what it really had to be. >> Okay. >> But I feel like there's no need for that. >> We have to. It's it's protocol. >> Wow. >> So, DCF, they'll come and they'll do their own investigation to ensure that, you know, you're not being negotiate, etc. They'll give you they'll give you guys some uh some resources if you >> I don't see why that's needed if I'm telling you right now. >> Okay. I It's protocol, man. >> What's your name? >> Uh, >> what's your name? >> Um, sorry. I'm just trying to figure out the problem here because >> what is right now? I don't think we have a problem. >> Yeah, but we have >> So, why would we need to contact? >> Because as of right now, you're by yourself and we have to either take you to GCS or we have to find your your parent or guardian because your mother is going to jail. So, in order for us to turn you over to somebody else, we need to know your name and information so that we can find out who your father is and contact you. >> I can give you my father's information if that's what you need. >> He'll he'll do that. But you don't want to give him your your uh your name. >> Once I have my other parent here, like I do more work. >> She's she's going to jail. >> Yeah, but once I have my father here, I'd be able to >> just give him your give him your dad's name and phone number. >> Thank you. >> I'm trying I'm trying to find her name. >> Are you going through my mother's stuff? >> I am. >> You have a warrant for that? >> No, I don't need a warrant, man. I'm inventorying the car so that I can ensure that nothing is stolen out of the car. >> Oh, well, I'm not saying it's stolen. Like, we're just >> No, the car is being told. So, I'm I'm making sure that nothing goes missing so that when your mom gets out of jail, everything is still here. That's what I'm doing. It's an inventory. It's not not a search. >> Okay, >> understood. >> License, no bueno. Then there's a seat tag order. There's a seat tag order >> for the RO and she's >> finding someone to pick up the child became complicated when no relatives could be reached. >> Like that you guys have a um >> okay like this is being handled right and my daughter's still being her >> Did you identify yourself? >> I tried to but he said I was being arrested. >> No, no, you're still being arrested. But listen, so now we run into the problem that we can't hand your daughter over to someone in your Hold on, let me finish. To someone in your family cuz we can't identify if these people are family members because we don't know who you are. So it's our responsibility. So now we have to identify you. We have to identify your daughter and we have to identify the person that we're going to hand your daughter over to cuz that's all got to be put in the police report cuz if we just hand your daughter or someone that you tell us is your daughter. >> Okay. identify myself because I want my daughter to be she's never been through anything like this before. >> Well, she was very rude for never being through anything. She was very rude. Very, very rude. >> My daughter probably would too. If if you treat it like this, I guarantee. But I, like I said, I want to identify myself so that she can get to my daughter. >> Okay. Do you have a driver's license inside the vehicle? >> No. >> No. >> Okay. Give it, give me a minute. I'll get some paper. Right. Your stuff down. During a vehicle record check, officers [music] discovered previous unresolved matters which had to be addressed according to standard procedures. >> All right, ma'am. So, um, we ran the tag. The vehicle is coming back with a seized tag order. Okay. So, I'm taking it I'm taking the tag. There's a seized tag order. >> What is it? >> It's basically when it's telling law enforcement, pull you over and take the tag. >> Why? >> If the driver is the owner. So, you're the driver. So, we have a seed tag order. protecting the tag. The vehicle is being towed. Okay. Do you want me to give your are those your purses inside the car? >> Right. But why is it is these What is that for? >> Listen to me. >> Uh suspension. >> Do you want me to give your purse the house keys or whatever? >> Yes, I do. >> To Okay. To who? >> It doesn't matter. Either one of them. >> Anybody over here? Uh, whichever one of the two that came up here. >> Okay. What's their names? >> Naissia. >> Na Lisia. >> Okay. Um, do you want me to give them all the keys other than the car key? >> Why are you taking >> Because it's a it's a seiz tag order. >> What is that? You're not explaining to me what it is. Like >> seize tag order is a order from the government from the state that we are supposed to seize your tag and tell the vehicle. So therefore you your your license is also suspended. It's been suspended many times in the past. Okay. So like when that happens some way somehow the state comes out with that order and they tell law enforcement to seize the tag. Therefore it's kind of like so they can have you stop driving so you can go to them and rectify whatever the issue is. Okay. >> That is crazy. >> Okay. So the purse and stuff, you want me to let them get whatever they want to get out of the car or just the purses? >> Yeah, just tell them to take everything out of the car and >> um also your your husband he's on his or your her father is on as well. >> Okay. >> Finally, they [music] were able to contact another relative to pick up the children. >> Did they Did she identify herself? >> I give her name. So, you're not giving your name and information >> because DCF's going to figure out >> what happened. >> Are you sure that's fine? You want her to go with DCF? >> No, I'm talking about you guys by her name. >> Yes. >> So funny. Why is it so funny? Your mom's going to jail right now. Why is this funny? >> Did you get released? Did you get her? >> None of this is comedy. So, uh, as of right now, your mom, she's she's under arrest for felon to identify. So, obstructing our traffic stop. Also, uh, driving while license suspended. So, felony driving while license suspended. >> It's also a CS tag order. That's why we took the tag. um because her license is not suspended. It it is suspended. It's not valid. Okay. As of right now, that's what she's going to to jail for. >> And that forces us to the vehicle because now there's no tag on it. The judge said that we have to take the >> And then unfortunately, due to this happening in in the presence of a minor and arrest, we have to forward this to DCF. Okay. So, DCF will be notified. And did did any of my partners get the address for for her? >> Okay. No problem. And >> Yeah. Me me too. Me too. And I'm I mean, hey, this could have just been a a citation and they could have been on their way and they could have been released from here and we would have just stowed the car due to the seized tag order. However, the mom chose to >> concerned about the child right now. Doesn't make any sense. >> We are concerned about the child, too. That's why we have to do this. We have to follow the procedure. >> You're not concerned about going to take her down to a police station. >> Well, no, we don't want to, man. That's why we're still here on scene. That's why we have her standing with her sisters waiting for dad to come. At the end of the day, we're just trying to do our job and we're trying to do it the right way. >> Yeah. >> Okay. I'm going to definitely take a look at >> All right. You want to you want to get a pen and take my name down? >> Yes, >> Thomas. T H. Can you hold a phone? >> The mother was charged with failure to identify obstruction and driving while license suspended. The appearance of two children on the street was only an initial sign. The real story began when police realized that the apartment contains situations no child should be exposed to. >> What's going on? Why aren't you watching it? >> Well, >> not to mention your entire house smells like. On February 28th, 2024, police received a call reporting a very young child found in a public area, raising immediate safety concerns. Upon arrival, they also found a 7-year-old boy outside. Based on these scattered details, officers quickly worked to bring both children to a safe location. >> Yeah, I was just walking my dog and I saw him there. [laughter] >> I have no idea. >> Okay. >> I don't know how long there. Okay, thank you. Hey, buddy. What's going on? Do you know where you live? You know where you live? What's your name? 475. You got me a flag down Rose of Trail and Rose Bay. There's a tiny kid just walking around here on his own. 475. Do we have any calls referencing someone missing a child? >> Do you know where you live? Where you walking from? >> Yes. >> You don't know where where did you walk from? Can you point to where you came from? Did you come from that way? You came from that way. Yeah. Okay. Here. Take my hand. Take my finger. Let's walk where you came from. Okay. You said you came from that way. Yeah. >> Do you know him? Is that your brother? >> Yeah. >> Oh, careful running in the street. You're his brother? Yeah. Let's get on the road. Where you guys come from? >> My sister left him. Your sister left him. Mhm. >> Where do you guys live at? >> Who's home there? >> I'm gonna I'm got to make sure. Is mom home? No. >> No. >> Who's home with you guys? >> Me and my brother. >> Just you two. >> Your uncle's home. >> How'd you get through here? >> Here. >> Okay, let's go a different way cuz I'm not going to be able to go that way. And I can't let you guys go on your own. So, >> our house is right there. >> Yeah. Unfortunately, I can't let you guys go on your own though. So, we're going to have to walk a different way around. Okay. Cuz I can't let you guys go on your own. I got to make sure he gets back. >> Yeah, he can get back. I know. >> Yeah, but I can't fit through. So, >> where is Right here? >> Where is another opening or do I have to go all the way around? >> All the way around. >> Okay, let's walk all the way around. Come on. Come with us. You want to come with us, too? >> How old are you? >> How old are you? >> Seven. >> Seven. Does Uncle know you guys are out? >> Yes. He knows you guys are outside. He knows this one's outside. >> Yeah, but he doesn't know Mila yet. >> He didn't know. What? How old's Mila? >> Nine. >> She's nine. How old are you? >> Seven. >> How old's he? >> Two. >> Two. They're saying that they live in there. >> Walk around. >> He was over 7-year-old was over at the park. He just walked over here when he saw I was talking to the brother. But I'm not. There's no way I'm fitting through that. So, we're going to have to jack up. We're going have to walk around. >> At the apartment, the person who answered the door was not the children's mother, but their uncle. What drew officers attention was that the living conditions required further assessment. >> Hey, what's going on? How you doing? You all right? Got a second to talk. You >> got an ID on you? >> No, I didn't. >> What's your name? >> Marcus. >> Well, we got a problem when there's a 2-year-old outside by himself. No one else is around >> by the middle of the road. >> By the middle by the road. And you're supposed to be watching them. >> Well, I guess I'll statement. >> Well, what's going on? Why aren't you watching them? Well, >> not to mention your entire house smells like >> Yeah, I have multiple cards. >> But why aren't you watching them? >> I didn't know that you went outside. Last time I checked, they were going to be at the park. So, >> by themselves? >> No, not by themselves. But I guess somebody came and got me from the park. >> Make sure you I >> Who else is in the house, sir? >> My sister. IKEA. >> Those are her kids. >> Yes. >> All right. Can we talk to her? >> Where's your ID? >> So, she doesn't have them. I'm fine. >> Yeah. >> I'll be right back. >> Just step on this side. No, just step on this side. No, step over here. Step over here. >> Come over. >> Step over here. that up. >> What's your sister's name? >> I don't have it. >> What's your sister that says >> Come on over here. Come on over here. I got some questions to ask you first. You don't have to answer that >> right here. During [music] discussion, they learned the mother was resting and believed someone else was watching the children. The uncle, recently completing a rehabilitation program, provided unclear information about who was actually responsible for supervising them. >> You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand? >> I'm under arrest. >> I'm asking the questions. As of right now, are you in handcuffs? >> Do you have the right to remain silent? Do you understand? >> I'm under arrest. >> Are you in handcuffs? >> As of right now, if you were under arrest, you'd be in handcuffs. These are just the general questions. So, you have the as No, you're being detained. You're not under arrest yet. >> What are you being detained for? >> There's a 2-year-old child out in the middle of the road by himself >> and you're supposed to be watching them. >> I'm supposed to be watching. >> Where's your ID? >> I just got I have an ID. >> Okay, we're going to continue. You have the right to silent. Do you understand? >> No, I don't understand. >> What don't you understand about the question? Why am I going? >> I I just told you child. There's a 2-year-old child out by himself >> and you're supposed to be watching them. >> It's not child. >> How you know what? We're not even going to go into that. >> We're going to continue the question. Anything you say may be used against you in court. Do you understand? >> I'm am I under arrest? >> You're not Okay, listen to the question, partner. Demarcus goes away. What's the last part of your social? Last part of your social. Listen, you're not under arrest. Okay. Now, here's a couple things. Okay, we're concerned because there's a 2-year-old, a little baby that cannot fit for himself, okay, out there in the middle of the room. Let me talk. You want You want me to talk? I'll talk. Okay. So, we're concerned about that. The kids are saying that you were supposed to be watching. Okay. You are the adult, correct? So, we want to make sure one, we afford you the opportunity to explain why this 2-year-old was out there by himself. But before we ask you any questions, we want to make sure that you understand your rights. It's a simple yes or no. Just because we redo these doesn't mean you're arrested. reread these so you know your rights so we can ask you the questions cuz other than that in my in my statement in my report I have to write that you refuse to provide any any information based on our observ observations out there of this child by >> so this is your time to tell you your side of the story but before we ask you tell your side of the story we have to ask you this question >> can you guys go inside >> but if you're going to be like this and you're not going to answer any questions in my in my report all I'm going to say is You refuse to answer any questions. >> So, are you ready to answer these questions so we can ask you and you can tell your side of the story >> or do you just want me to go based off of my observations? >> Well, obviously I snuck out the house with the other kids and they left from my side. I wasn't paying attention. I was looking. >> Okay. In order to me for me to continue to ask you more, I have to ask you these questions though. Can we do that? It was it was it was on accident. He snuck out with >> Okay. Again, we're going to inform you of your rights. >> Okay. Let me before we proceed, we're going to inform you of your rights. >> Okay. Just listen to the officer. >> And it's only Yes. These ones are only yes or no until we get to the the last parts. Okay. >> You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand? >> I need a verbal. I'm sorry. A verbal yes or no. >> Speak it. I can't have a head nod. Yes. >> Anything you say may be used against you in court. Do you understand? Yes. >> You have the rights, Dr. Laura, before and during questioning. Do you understand? >> Yes. >> If you cannot afford a lawyer and want one, one will be provided for you before questioning without charge. Do you understand? >> So you you you just you already you already have a a question though. >> Okay. We're not asking you we're trying to make sure that you are the right person for this child. We're not going to continue to ask you any questions without you understanding your rights. Okay? So if you're going to play these games, just read them as right. >> If you want to talk to us, sure. If you don't, that's fine. >> Okay. It's just >> I'm going to ask you again. If you cannot afford a lawyer and want one, one will be provided for you before questioning without charge. Do you understand? >> All right. >> Does anyone you or promise you any anything to get you to talk to me? >> Okay. So, you're saying that they left the house. What do you mean they left the house? What? They they uh smoked out. They got he got older sister and two older sisters and his brother. I thought they was in a room playing the game. >> Okay. And what were you doing at the time? >> I was in the follow room. >> Okay. You said earlier that someone was supposed to be taking them to the park and must have left them at the park. >> Who was supposed to take them to the park? >> I thought my sister Maya was taking them to the park. >> How old is your sister Maya? >> She's not I guess she not when I went. I I guess I was making all that. >> So you don't know when Maya left? >> I don't know when Maya left. So they probably tried to call her out, but I I left. >> Do you have Maya's phone? >> No, I have my phone. >> I have I just got out. >> And who is Maya? >> My sister. >> And who is she to the kids? >> Her aunt. >> Her aunt. So where are this kid's parents? >> Is that lady in there? >> Yeah, my sister. She was >> So that's your other sister? That was the one that's my sister. >> So that's their mom over there. >> All three kids. >> Okay. >> And where's the 9year-old? >> He or she? Cuz they're telling me it's a sister. >> The oldest. >> Kam. >> Kam. >> Kamaya is Kamaya. Is is Kamaya is the second youngest. I'm the second oldest >> and she's nine. >> She is I believe she know she nine. I think she nine now. >> And then they have another older sister. >> They have a older brother. >> Older brother. And what's the brother's name? >> VJ. >> VJ. That's the actual name. And how old's VJ? I really want I really I can't do right now. >> So So you were But you were while your sister slept, you were supposed to be watching the kids. >> I don't know, bro. They came to know I'm I'm in the front room by myself. I'm I'm >> Do you Here's the question. Do you live here? >> No. I'm I'm just I just got out of jail. >> Okay. So you just got out of jail. You don't live here. So did she call you and say, "Hey, can you watch the kids?" Did your sister call you and say, "Hey, can you watch the kids for me?" >> No, no, I'm not under this. >> Well, we're just like I said, we're trying to get your side of the story. So, that I mean that's the main question right now. Were you under the impression you were supposed to be watching the kids? >> Okay. You and that's people just I was supposed to be watching the kids. I have no supposed to been watching the kid. I don't have no recolor 470 or 472. >> Okay. I didn't know I was supposed to be watching because you feel me? Normally I can't be at school, but I guess her car wasn't start this morning. So I was making my music. >> And where do you normally stay? >> I just got out of jail. >> Oh, but you you haven't been in jail for How old are you for the last Well, you were born in '94, so you're at least 20ome. So where do you normally stay at before you went to jail? Where did you stay? >> Concord. >> Okay. You still got a place on Concord? >> My mom. You feel me? This guy. That's That's where you normally stop. >> This is is literally if you look at my jail picture, I have the same outfit on. >> What you go to jail for? >> What were you in jail for? >> It doesn't matter. I I just got out of jail. >> It doesn't matter. >> I just got out of jail. >> So, you have Okay. Okay. To clarify the situation, officers spoke with a 9-year-old girl to understand [music] how adults had arranged supervision. The information indicated responsibility lay with a mother and aunt. >> My name is Melanie and I love your name. >> Thank you. >> So, Camila, I have a few questions. First of all, do we know right from wrong? >> Yes. >> Yes. So, if I say the sky is purple, am I telling the truth or a lie? >> A lie. >> A lie is what color is the sky? >> Blue. >> Okay. If I say that hot dogs are food, am I saying am I saying the truth or lies? >> True. >> Oh, cuz why? >> Because hot dogs is >> Okay, so come on. Like question. When did you when did you leave to go to the bar? >> Do you know? >> Yeah, it was in the morning. >> Was that when Maya was still here? >> My auntie? >> Yes, Auntie Maya. Was that when she was still here? Um, yeah. >> Okay. Did you leave when Auntie Maya left or did you >> No, I stay I I stayed at the park. >> Did she take you to the park? >> No. >> Or you guys just went on your own? >> Went on my own. >> Who was supposed to be watching you? >> Jesus. >> That's a good question, baby girl. Like here in the apartment for today, who was supposed to be watching you? >> Oh, me, my little brother, and my baby brother went. >> Okay. And who was but who was supposed to be if you were to ask somebody in the apartment if you can go to the park who would you have asked? >> My mom or my auntie. >> Okay. They were both supposed to be watching you. >> No. >> If you wanted cookie, who would you ask to have some cookies today? If you were when you were in there and you wanted some cookies earlier, who would you have asked to have some cookies? >> My mom. >> Your mom. >> Okay. Would you have ever asked your uncle? >> No. No. Do you leave your uncle alone? >> Huh? >> Do you leave your uncle alone? Okay. >> Most of the time. >> So, if mom's asleep, well, who would you have asked? >> My auntie. >> And if auntie is not here, who would you have asked? Or would you have just the cookies? >> Then I want to eat the cookies. >> Oh, okay. I appreciate it, by the way. Thank you very much. >> After speaking with the uncle and the children, police requested to see the mother from inside the apartment. She appeared tired and explained [music] that she believed another adult was watching the children. >> So, whose place is it? >> On stuff. >> Whose place is it? >> Sir, I can't give you the exact answer because I really exactly >> So, how did you get in here? >> From my understanding, it's my sister, but >> And where is your sister at? Do you have her phone number? >> I do have her. >> Can you call her and find out? >> I could do that for you if you ask me a question, I'll be there. >> Yeah. No, I appreciate that. I appreciate that. And how many kids are in the house? >> Second. >> How many kids are in the house? >> Sir, I was just asking him something before you walked up. Did you want to know what I was asking? >> No, no. I want to know how many kids are in the house. >> Well, I was just asking this officer something. >> So, what you got? >> I'm sorry. >> You say he's asking me something good. >> Oh, the police stuff cuz her A is on. I don't touch her stuff. You know what I'm saying? Like I'm really just trying to respect her house and AC can know the whole time in here. So, >> but for right now, we need to keep y'all separated. >> We can stay separated. That's fine. Me and him. I can go downstairs, too. It It doesn't really It do matter, but it don't matter. I don't think it's close. >> Anybody else over here with the kids? >> Um, let me call. They could come outside. I mean, I just want to throw her on, you know. Of course, they cost money. I have five kids. I've already answered these question. >> You haven't answered. I just found out that you have five kids. I didn't know that. >> Let me see. I answered these questions with another. >> So now I'm new officer. You have five kids. >> I put them all in. >> I put all the native version. Come on. >> Come on. >> Talk to you downstairs. >> We want to talk to you outside the kids view. We want to talk to you about that. >> Everyone here you got to talk to >> Marcus. Can you watch the kids? >> What's going on? >> Oh my god. >> Just one of you stand by for a second. >> Mhm. Put your hands behind your back. You're under arrest. Put your hands behind your back. We don't want to do this in front of the kids. You have a warrant for battery strangulation domestic childhood. And you're also being arrested for child. Anything else? >> Mhm. Oh my god. A hotel room might seem like just a temporary place to stay, but when police entered, they realized it was hiding a complicated guardianship dispute. >> I took your last 98 bucks to put up two kids in the room for the night, and here you are. >> Yeah. >> Drunker and get kicked out. So >> I ain't going to lie to you. She does need help. >> Hey, >> good nap. >> Yeah, >> she does she does need help. >> Okay. >> All right. So, what's your guys' name? >> The situation became complicated when the two middle-aged adults were the legal guardians while the uncle was not. Yet, they showed difficulties managing stress in a way that raised concerns about the children's well-being. >> Listen, the two boys are my nephews. They're my biological nephews. Yes, >> that is my mother and stepdad. >> Okay. >> My mom and stepdad >> have custody of the kids. So, I just can't have it. I have a a handicapped gentleman that was next door to them that's in a wheelchair and he's been here for a couple months and like I said the ladies said they just stepped out in the hallway and they could hear it the yelling and screaming and hear and I can't have that. >> Unfortunately, we can't force them to stay. They're the parents. They're the ones legal guardians. They have the right to them children now. They like, "Hey, yeah, they can stay. >> They're 15. >> We can't. They're not adults. They don't have they can't don't have to say so. But if they say they can stay, by all means, they're allowed. But we can't >> place them for overnight until something else happens. I mean, obviously he's messaging me. >> Yeah, like I said that we can't force them. >> Said the littlest one tried to take off out the door. >> Sometimes the hard things hard to do and this is that' be one of them situations we can't say a parent can't have their children. We can't say that. >> Their guardianship was called into question when they could not demonstrate a stable and suitable living environment for the children. This led police to consider an alternative in which the uncle temporarily met the necessary requirements. >> They want you two out of here. Are the boys allowed to stay with me because you guys ain't got nothing? >> That's that that's fine. I It wasn't me, but I'm >> I'm I'm asking in front of this officer. You guys are not allowed on this premises, but I can't send the boys down the road with you two drunk as are the boys allowed to stay with me. >> Yes or no? >> Yeah, that's why. >> Mom, are you okay with that? >> Huh? You swim with that? >> No. >> She just woke up. So >> she's clearly was there tonight? No. >> Okay. >> What do you mean there tonight? >> I probably won't even talk. >> Huh? >> Tell him what about your situation? You getting kicked out already? Put on the street. >> I took your last 98 bucks to put up two kids in a room for the [ __ ] night and here you are. >> Yeah. >> Drunker and get kicked out. And now what? Two kids got to suffer because of your dumbass [ __ ] You need to rot it out. I I I >> You need to ride it out. >> She needs help. >> She does. And I'm being honest. >> And now these boys got to suffer because of your man's already talking about. >> You know what I'm saying? >> I mean, >> are they your kids? >> No, they're my nephews. >> Nephews? >> Yeah, they're He said they can stay. All right, cool. He's got like she's here. >> No, she's she's gone. >> She just woke up. >> Fireball. >> She needs help. >> I am so sorry. >> No, you're fine. >> I got to go. Okay, for them to stay. They say okay and they say perfect. You can have them. Thank you. Thank you. >> Like I said, legally we can't force them because they have another guardianship. >> What? >> Well, he's definitely keeping your kids tonight. You're you're in no way, shape, or form to take care of kids. >> Yeah. But >> so >> let them stay with him. >> She wants you guys off the property tonight. All right. She doesn't want you trespassed, but she wants you off the property tonight. So, what's your guys' plans? >> He's going to have to take us somewhere. I don't know. >> He's going to have to take you guys somewhere. But >> he's going to stay with the kids, right? >> Yeah, that's true, too. >> He's going to stay with the kids. >> He's got to stay with the kids. I have nowhere else to go and he's the only transportation that before we start drink I'm good. I'm I'm fine. But she being on fire self te >> Yeah. I mean she can't even I don't even think you can get out this car. Can you? No. I don't even try. Don't even try. >> I can't. I can't. I ain't going to lie to you. I can't. >> No. I get it. >> So, what are we going to do tonight? You going to come to jail? >> She kept saying she wanted to go to >> You want to go to jail? >> You're keep my kids. You get out of jail. Babe, he's gonna have to take him with him because >> I have no say so you do. But when it comes to something like this, >> you're not in you're not in the care for a child right now 100%. So >> 23. >> You guys clearly can't drive. >> He's willing to take care of them for you, >> right? >> Owen's going to take care of the kids. Like >> Yeah, I'm I'm not driving. I got two boys to worry about. I got to take care of your responsibility >> and I got my >> So what if I let you guys walk down the street? What? Where the hell are you guys? >> I I'll guarantee you she can't even walk. >> I know she can't walk, but I can walk. >> Well, yeah, I know. But what are we going to do with her? >> I don't know. >> I know you can't walk it. >> Whose truck is this? >> That's uh son's going to be in Miranda. >> What can we do? Because I know she can't she ain't going to be able to walk it. I can. But >> we should have thought about this before we got over. >> Yeah. >> What do you What do you I got kids. That's my responsibility. I got to be the adult here. I'm 33 years old. I'm your son. You're 58 years old. Mom, come on. Figure it out. >> Take them. >> Take them. >> Take them. >> I already have plans on it. I'm sorry. >> Yeah. He's taking them for the night. >> He already gave me permission in front of both of these uh two gentlemen. Campbell and what's your name, sir? >> Officer. >> Okay. What do you want to do? >> I know you ain't going to be able to walk. I can. >> You guys got somebody come pick you up? >> No, I don't. I I don't I ain't gonna like to >> You understand there's only other one other place we can go tonight, right? >> Yeah. Ask jail, >> right? So give you all these avenues. >> You ain't gonna be able to walk, >> not go to jail. But I mean, >> take what? >> Say what? >> I go what? >> Do what do you think, B? Cuz I can walk. Ain't no problem. I know she can't. >> She is not allowed on the premises and I don't have >> Yeah, she's got to go, too. If she can't stay, both you guys got to go. >> I listen, I can't. No, my room for the night for these is for these boys to stay. I'm good. >> What do you think be best for her? Because >> she's the adult. I can't make her own decisions for her. I mean, I learn how to be a man on my own. >> How far are you trying to walk? >> Me, I can walk anywhere. It don't matter to me. >> Well, you got to go somewhere tonight, >> right? You got to go somewhere tonight. You know what I mean? Well, you just going to sleep on the street tonight. Come back in the morning. You know what I mean? Like, >> I can do that. I've done it before, but I mean, >> I don't I don't find it funny, >> right? Like, it's not funny at all, honestly. But, >> we got to go somewhere. Okay. So, we need to call somebody. We need to call a taxi, take it to another hotel, go in there, sleep it off. But you cannot be on Best Western property tonight. >> But we don't have the money to even get a hotel. >> You have no money at all. >> Pay for the mot here tonight. >> Jesus Christ. >> We had to pay for the motel for the night. >> That's what we did. What do you guys do on a dayto-day basis? >> We was living out there up with Sony Creek and the guy that that was staying out we was staying with out there, we stay in the camper out there, he kicked us out. >> Well, we can get you in How about we get you in shelter and probably get you in the shelter tonight? Both perfect. >> Both the device or >> Yeah, perfect. >> Give me a call in the morning. >> I'll bring the boys up like this. >> And I'm I'm not going to see y'all here. You >> take and go. >> She came back walking in. I don't know if they're going to take her. >> I'm 100%. >> Well, I mean, you should be worried about your wife here, bud. >> What are you going to do? >> [ __ ] >> I'm good. I'm good. Just when the situation seemed to calm, additional information about the uncle's background was clarified, making the assessment process more cautious. >> Contact and shelter. See if we can drop him off. >> Okay, cool. >> Help her in the truck. Yeah, let's help her out of the truck here, bud. >> What? You piss yourself, Mom? >> They drink like this a lot. >> Oh, yeah. >> Hey, Richie, be honest. Be honest. >> We do, but be honest. >> You thought about trying to get I mean, you're homeless, right? And you're spending all your money on this. >> If I could do it myself, I would check her in first because he's not the problem. He follows because why? I'm sorry, but she makes you like a little girl. >> Me quick for a month out there. We were saying that and then you start picking back up again. >> Thinking the means with not having a place to live. Think you can use the money elsewhere? >> Yeah. I >> think that'd be a kind of smart thing to do. >> Yeah, because out there we stay on camper. They have no less and everything to have a lesson out there. >> You're also you're also taking care of kids too, right? >> Oh, you're taking care of these kids. You got no money. I I take care of him, but I I don't have I'm used to this. They shouldn't be. So, you're you're >> So, how where do the kids stay when this gentleman? >> Yeah, that's my biological mother. Yes. >> Yeah. So, where does the kids stay when this gentleman's not around? >> They ain't got nobody to go to the system. Them boys been in and out of a goddamn foster system. How many times, mother? How many times? >> I listen, I'm I'm going to be honest with you. I'm a convicted felon, man. I have a background and I've already tried it and then Glenn allowed me, you know, but I'm able enough to hold him overnight or I've held it for a week. It's been 10 years since I've been in this now because got both the boys. >> I may be worth fighting for uh what do they call that? >> Emergency custody. >> Yeah, emergency custody. >> Especially this situation here. >> In the end, police recommended a short-term temporary custody measure to allow the grandmother to regain stability and ensure the children's safety. >> Both drunk. You >> either sit down or I'm going to have him remove me. It's either one or the other. >> Okay. Now, please. >> This is embarrassing. >> I live this life that they living. Now, sit your down like a woman and sober up. >> Smell it from here. Smell like she had fireball. >> You drink Fireball? >> Yeah, that's all she drinks. >> Damn, you got an ID on. >> My goodness. I think she's wearing it. >> Yes, she's got her wallet. >> All right, you get that one for >> We're proud of you, dude. >> Thank you very much, sir. >> Might not hear much, but I'm proud of her. answer. >> Mom, I'm sorry. I love you, but I can't keep going. If >> you say anything, get back yet. >> No, yet. >> You can shoot me all you want. That's fine. That's cool. Just know I'm the man. >> I wouldn't be shooting a guy that's taking care of your children, man. Cuz obviously you're not responsible enough to do that. >> You really do? >> Am I really going to do what, mother? What? Make sure you get sober for them boys up there that live the same life I did when I was their age. Yeah. >> Okay. Where'd you go? >> Where did I go? I went to some, you know, guess what? Thanks for Tony. Remember nobody that's no blood to me, no nothing, >> right? >> At 12 years old, you gave me up. You remember that? I do. I still, but I don't hold you. Hey, I turned out to be a hell of a man. >> They don't pay for one take me. >> I'm a hell of a man. Richie, I'm not mad at you, man. >> Come here. >> I'm not mad. Listen, just come here real quick. >> Well, let him vent. He's going through. >> Um, we can't obviously leave her out in streets like this. So, what's going to happen if the homeless shelter can't take her? We're going to have to take him in for disorderly conduct and let her do an 8 hour hold at the jail. You know, I got two kids that I play like hell to see and they're upstairs right now and what am I dealing with? You know, now I'm going have to let her know, you know. Yeah, I come in contact with the cops last night with our kids. It may take me like another four or five months to see my kids >> if you tell them. >> Yes, I told him. And look what do you how did you solve it? We got you a room in here and what you go in there doing? Breaking a rule. You're not supposed to be smoking in their residence. You're in there yelling. You're arguing. You got a disabled man next door. You got the boys out there that are freaked out. This I got 1500 text messages. I got woke up out of the bed. Uncle O, please come get me. >> Mom, you want me to look here? Look. >> All right. Yeah, she'll be >> I need your help. Come >> ASAP. She is drunk and she's That's the little grandson of yours up there. That's cool. >> That's what you think is cool? >> Okay. Okay. I love you, though. I love you, >> Richie. I'm sorry. Listen, I'm not I'm not doing nothing. >> All right, ma'am. [clears throat] So, where we're at right now, you got to go with us. Okay. >> It's a It's going to be It's an 8 hour in talks. Hold. Why did >> you ever figure out who she was? >> You had Wait. You better tell these officers what they done to >> So, we're going to give you the opportunity to come with us real easy. Okay. Walk on over to the car. We're just going to take you so you can sober up. Okay. >> We're going to do it right now. >> Come on. Here. Come on. >> Why don't you go ahead and stand up for us? Stand up. Stand up for us. >> You lied to me. Baby, take your handcuffs. Come on. Don't do that. >> Come on. Why did you do that? I didn't. Baby, come on. >> You got 3 seconds. Try to stand up. Come on, baby. There we go. Stand up. >> Come on. Go. Walk over to the floor. >> Just walk over here. >> I'm I'mma hold on so you don't fall. Okay. >> Come on. Come on. >> Come on. >> Come on. I'm walking with you. Come on. >> All right. So, I'm going to cut you in the front. Okay. Nope. Front. We'll go to the front. >> No. No. Go front. >> You want to go back? Okay. >> No. Go front because >> Come on. >> I like you, baby. I'm I don't like you. >> What's your name? Richard. Go over there, Richard. >> I'm sorry, baby. I don't like you. Do you want to Does she have a phone or anything like that? >> Nope. >> No. >> I don't need them. >> Cool. You don't need it. >> Thank you. >> All right, Richard. You're good, bud. We'll take her from here, >> fellas. Um, she'll be released in 8 hours. Okay. Somebody wants to go get her, then. >> I'll get her. >> The grandmother was charged with disorderly conduct. Under Ohio law, she could face 30 days in prison and a $250 fine. Children need a stable environment and adults who can exercise self-control. When adults fall short, the community and relatives can provide temporary support to help them. Another girl trembled, trying to escape her mother's grasp. >> Her hormones are crazy. And then her little head. She's got brain damage still in several of the parts they didn't remove. >> On July 7th, 2024, police received an emergency call about an 8 to 10year-old girl found hiding in the bushes, trembling and terrified, saying her mother had grabbed her arm and her. Officers quickly arrived at the scene where the mother tried to justify herself. She has mental issues. >> Hi, >> somebody call police on me. Yeah, I figured I was going to call myself because my daughter will not come out of the bushes and I got two babies up here. I'm babysitting, but I can't leave up there. She's got an epilepsy problem. Okay, so she's got she's got a lot of brain damage. Call whoever you want to to confirm this. This is what she does because she sees specialists and stuff. >> Just take a breath. >> She sees specialists and stuff for her mental her and stuff like that. Okay. >> What she does when she's about to have major seizure, >> but I can't leave these kids up here alone. So, I keep going back and forth. >> Do I need to call >> my boyfriend is their grandfather and he like left to go get her seizure medicine. He hasn't come back. >> Okay. Do I need to call the ambulance to come check her out? >> No, because she probably will be okay cuz he's supposed to be here with her medicine. It's not that she showed any other signs other than she's been doing a lot better in the last few days, but I mean I know to call him if I have to because I've had to do it 100 times before. I got to go check on these. Can you watch her for a second? I mean, I don't know what to do. I can see these babies up here. >> Yeah. I mean, if you can I need you to come right back. >> I'm going to bring them down here with me. >> Okay. Can you grab your ID, too? >> No, I don't think I got it. I was in the truck. When he gets back, you can have it though. I'll tell you who I am. >> It seems that witness statements at the scene added even more weight to the initial charges. >> Hey, let me figure out how to come around you. >> Do you want me to go back upstairs? I was on the phone the whole time. >> What's going on? >> So, you know, my brother came and came by the house. He said, "There's a little girl outside." I'm like, "Little girl outside?" And she's, you know, she stooped down or what's not. So, I just went outside because I was concerned cuz I don't know who it is. She stood down. She was sobbing. She was crying. She was, you know, she she's talking, but she's >> trembling like she's terrified. >> She was all by herself. >> All by herself. The way how she spoke is, you know, she's getting in the house. Long story short, the mother came outside searching for her because you're hearing someone. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And you heard it. >> Of course. >> I'm the one that came upstairs when she called. >> Wait. I'm going to >> That's what she said. >> Let me tell you why I called. When she was halfway up the stairs, she saw me and her cousin with her. She went back downstairs in her apartment. You know, she didn't come up for her. >> She came. She asked me if I see her. I said no. Even I did because situation. >> Yeah. Of course. >> Within her walking, I heard her. I overheard her saying you like that. Okay. >> More than one. But despite that, the mother still plays the victim. >> Stay over here, okay? >> Come out of the bushes, baby. This is ridiculous. >> I'm going to talk to her. I need you to stay over here. Okay. I need you to stay over here. Okay. >> Come over here. >> I'm going to move over here. I'm on my way. It's my kids. Like, I don't know that she's like, she's got mental problems. I'll show you. Well, I can't because the old man left me here took my phone. That's why I couldn't call you guys when she came up missing. >> Okay, that's fine. >> It's not fun. >> It's fine that you didn't have a phone to call us. Situation is obviously not fun. We've had to show her scared straight videos because of her what she does is is terrible. I >> said, "What do you mean?" >> Like she'll climb up to the top of the building, the building in the backyard. She's got seizures. She's able to pop them off. She has 16 a day sometimes. Freaking she'll go do the most dangerous thing she can find to do where we can't find her. I've had to call the police like seven or eight times to come find her. And then she'll she ran off to the store on her daddy the other day. Run off to the store way down the road. Tells them that she's been tied up. And we don't live together, but I know for a fact he didn't tie her up. All I want to do is get her back inside. And when her grandfather gets back, I'm gone. >> Until the real victim appeared. And with a tearful cry, my mom me. The truth finally came to light. >> Out of here. >> Can I come close to you? >> You okay? >> That's okay. Are you okay? >> No, not really. >> Okay. We're going to have some nice people come check you out just to make sure you're okay. All right. Okay. >> Do you want a hug? >> What? >> Do you want a hug? >> Are you saying hide or hike? >> No. Do you want a hug? >> A hug? >> A hug? >> Yes. >> Okay. Come here. >> It's okay. >> It's okay. My name's Kayla and I'm going to help you. Okay. >> Do you feel okay right now? >> No. >> Okay. What's wrong? >> I mean, right now, I don't really want to myself. That's pretty much only when I get mad. I only feel that way when I get mad. But it's about sadness. >> Okay. What are all these on you? That's from my the dog. He always likes to russle with me. >> It's from your dog. >> Yeah. >> Your mom said you have seizures sometimes. Do you feel like you're going to have one right now or? >> No. >> No. Okay. Can I see your arms real quick? So, what happened? Did you come run to the bushes by yourself? >> It started out on the stairs, but then I heard my mom and then when she found me and left me for a minute, I ran to the bushes where where she couldn't get me by the arm. She got me by the arm and dragged me. She did. Let me see your arm. Where did she drag you from? Where on your arm? >> Right here. >> All right. Can I get you to stand up? Do you think you can do that for me? Do you think you can walk over here for me? Or do you want to walk that way? >> I want to walk this way. >> Okay. >> I don't want to be in front of people right now. >> That's okay. >> Does anything right here and right here from when I was bended? >> Okay, that's it though. >> Yeah. >> Yet the mother remained adamant in her denial. >> I don't fake my child. I do not fake her. I don't know what she's acting like she's afraid of. Nobody's she's got seizures. We've loved and care for her ever since she caught it when she was eight months old. All about attention cuz these little ones were getting attention too. >> From both sides accounts, police discovered one truth. Every detail was unbelievably contradictory. >> And I understand if you >> No, you're not in trouble at all. Okay. >> No, you're not in trouble. I promise you're not in trouble at all. Okay. My grandma told me that if I start feeling emotional, like sad or mad and need not to hide, but to just go somewhere. So, I went on the step and my mother got furious and started running at me. I was just doing what I was told. >> Of course. Did you get hurt? Did your mom hurt you at all? >> She kind of made my arm go. She popped. >> It popped. Okay. Has she ever done anything like that before? >> No. >> Did she say anything? Here, you can wipe it on your shirt if you need to. >> No, cuz it doesn't belong to me. This is the only way it belongs to me. >> That's okay. You can wash it. >> Did she just walk out or was it unlock? >> She just walk out. >> Was it unlocked? >> I don't know. >> Okay. She just got out. >> Yeah. I mean, she's capable of opening the door. >> At home, we have measurements for when she was younger. When she would do it younger, we had to, you know, make the doors to where she could not, you know, necessarily open them when we didn't want her to. Since she's getting older, we just backed off of that technique because of the fact that you never know when like a fire is going to happen or something like that. >> And behind it was sadness. The girl lived with her grandparents only wishing to see her mother but was pushed away. Even >> Did your mom say anything to you like she was going to you or anything like that? >> She said cuss words and and she said when I find you I am going to your a word. >> Okay. >> And she also said she was going to f word my butt. Has mom been drinking at all tonight? >> I don't know. I just came to visit. >> You came to visit? Where did you come to visit from? Do you live with someone else? >> I live on my grandparents. >> Who are the kids that mom's with? >> I don't know. I just The reason she picked me up to visit is to come and meet them. >> Do you come to mom's house a lot? >> No. If there's a reason, we don't get along much. We have the opposite kind of things. She's lazy and stuff and I'm energetic. I have some napkins in my car. You want to come get some napkins? >> I'm embarrassed to show my face in front of those kids. >> No, don't be embarrassed. It's okay. Do you feel okay around your mom or are you scared around your mom? >> I'm a little bit scared around my mom. She easily gets upset. >> So, you know how you said she grabbed you today? Has she ever done anything like that before? >> Yes, she has. And so has my dad. >> Go this way. And I have some friends who are going to come just check you out to make sure you're okay. All right. Can you get through that way? >> No, I can't. >> Let's go this way. To clear up all doubts, police conducted a health check on the girl. >> So, she didn't have a seizure? >> No. Um, her mom said sometimes when she's going to have one though, she goes and hides and she was in the bushes. >> I mean, I don't go and hide anymore. I used to. >> Okay. But now I just when I break, I just go sit somewhere close to where I am. And that's what I did. What I did, I went to sit by the step for a little break. Okay. And she still got on me. I was following the rules. >> They're just going to look at your arms like I did. Okay. >> Finish up what we have to do. >> Well, let's stand in the shade. I'm sorry this is too hot for you guys. Let's go stand right here in the shade. >> I know. My daughter gets mad and she goes off. She's going to do it again now because >> it's because of us. >> You should go ahead and just tell them and >> we're not here to get anybody in trouble. We have >> Y won't let me go inside when I'm about to faint. >> Would you like to talk to the fire department that is here to help you guys? >> No. No. No. >> If you're about to >> If you're about to faint, if you're about to faint >> Oh, no. Yeah, I know. I'm getting Saturday night. >> Let's just take a little breath here. Grandma and grandpa, where do they stay at? >> In my custody. But for the summer, she was staying with them. But then I got came to get her today to come swim in the pool or whatnot. >> Are grandma and grandpa around? >> Yeah, they're around. They're not far from here. >> And then your boyfriend is here, you said, with the other two kids. >> Kids are >> Okay. Okay. >> His grandchildren. >> Okay. Do you have a phone number for grandma and grandpa? >> I do. At the same time, they followed up on the statements, called the grandparents to confirm the truth, and bluntly warned the mother could end up in jail. >> Is there any way that you can come uh pick up? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Have you talked to her mother? >> I have. >> What's going on? >> I was actually going to ask you, do you know, does mom have custody? >> Well, she and my son have joint custody, but Okay. She has been staying with me and my son. Um he works so I keep her during the day especially with school going on and I would take her back and forth to school so he could work. So that's the reason she would stay with me. Yeah. For at least a year and a half now. >> Okay. >> And her mother was going to get her today to have a visit. >> And does mom have any sort of or alcohol use? >> Well, I don't know. Why do you ask that? >> Because to be completely honest with you, mom is about to go to jail. She's going for We have a caller who heard her say that she's going to be said that mom grabbed her by the arm and pulled her arm out of socket. So, mom's going to jail. That's why we need you to come get >> okay. She really is hard to handle. She likes to run and hide from you. And I don't think she really understands how dangerous that can be, you know, but that's what she does. >> But we also can't have somebody who's threatening to hurt her child like that. >> Okay. Yeah. >> Okay. The truth was almost laid bare. Yet, the mother clung to excuses. The child had brain issues, epilepsy, and of course, nothing was ever her fault. >> What to do in the meantime, though, cuz it's going to be like 15 minutes. I'm not going to arrest her in front of her mom. >> We can talk to him. I've got some more questions for her. Do you mind if I ask you a couple more questions before we leave? Let's come over here in the shade. It's hot. >> Are you okay? I hope you're in the shade enough to wear it. >> Yeah. I'm just going to have a hard time getting all these thorns out of my butt. I'm just kidding. I thought it would cool her down to sit down, but then I sat down and I >> Yeah, that's understandable. So, I don't know how much you talked to my partner, but um I just wanted to hear what's been going on. >> She takes um medication medicine time now. He should have been back a long time ago with it for anti-anxiety. She's flipping out. She does it almost every day. I mean, we have spells like this four or five times a week and the police are usually coming. I've had defects. They dismiss my case because there's nothing there like that that they should they see. They come I let them investigate the home, everything. and it gave her brain damage in three parts of her brain. And two years ago, they took out her singular jarus, which is the right side of the brain that performs the functions of making simple judgments. Okay, >> so you're talking about inhibitions and her and she's going through puberty, too, cuz she's she doesn't look like it, but her hormones are crazy. And then her little head, she's got brain damage still and several other parts they didn't remove. That's her medication. And then she's also going through her dad and I splitting up, too. So, I can't take that away from her. She's just going through a lot. >> I got you. >> A lot of people don't get it. And we're in public. They often call the police like her grandpa that you just talked to, the husband of her, I don't know who you talked to, but he almost went to jail the other day for the same thing. And this is an old man who has never done anything wrong in his life. Both of them, you have to rrestle her or she will run out in front of a car. She'll she will but I'm saying she'll do things to herself really bad to herself. I get really freaked out. And then when he he left and didn't come back for a long time, I began to just cry and panic and then everybody got more upset and >> Okay. >> And the girl growing up in a toxic environment, she was nearly cut off from friends. [music] Then she suddenly revealed a horrifying secret. >> My name is Bradley. Okay. >> Yeah. >> That's my friend over there that you were talking to. What else going on? I know you've already talked. You don't want to talk about it? We don't have to. Okay. But if you want >> It just breaks my heart. >> It breaks your heart. What does? >> My mother doesn't explain it to me when I hear that one of my friends may have ran off. We can't fight. I was already concerned enough about him at the start when I thought they would not want to be my friends anymore before one got lost. >> You want to sit with me? >> Yeah. Okay. >> What I'm saying is I have a lot of concerns in my mind. Will they still want to be my friend? Will they be able to find my friend? Will I be able to still spend the night? Something bad happened today besides my friend getting lost. And will I be able to still film swimming? >> They would love to be friends with you too. I promise. Yeah, >> you're you're super cool. You're super nice. They would love to be your friends, too. >> They're not lost. >> What is my mother told me? >> We're We don't have any people that are missing right now. Hold on just one second. Okay, I'm going to see if I can get you a napkin. Thank you so much. >> You're welcome. >> There you go. >> I crying cuz I can't get my mind off of my brain. >> I promise you, we will go and try to figure out what's up with your friends and see if they're missing, okay? Cuz your mom's been here with us the whole time. So, your friends might have been found since we've all been out here, right? Well, I promise you, we'll if there's a little kid gone missing, you know, we'll be the first to get told about it. >> From the mother's side, her statement kept repeating the same story. Sadly for her, with all the evidence, witnesses, and the victim's words, police decided to end her self-stage show. >> Did you say anything today that would like make her scared or anything like that? >> Yes, because when I came outside, oh my god, she was s I said, "Okay, fine. You can have a little pool. You can sit here on this on this front stair." I go out there and she's gone again. What am I going to do? I can't leave the children here. And I see her now have a panic attack which I'm diagnosed with and I'm supposed to be on medication but I don't take it. But it scares me when she does that. So I start to try to her. I'm like if you don't get down here you're going to make it worse because it will get worse. Everybody's going to get more angry. I'm like you. She knows that I like do not don't think I've ever. >> Did you like grab her in any way? >> Yeah. Yeah. Cuz Yeah. Yeah. I was trying to I was trying to get her arms off the um the rails of the stairs so she would go in. She was trying to run upstairs. I've had a wreck recently. I am not able to chase her at all. I can't. I used to be able. She's fast as hell. >> Did it hurt or did she say anything? Like >> she didn't say or anything. I mean, she just bites really hard cuz she's freakishly strong. I've seen a right there. I don't know how that happened, but it might it could have been, but it wasn't intentional. But as far as like physically hurting her, no. I do not children. Okay. Or well, I'm really just not a fighter with myself. >> To be completely honest with me, have you had anything to drink? Any sort of use in the past? Oh, in the past, but I've been off probation. I had I had tampered with like something like as a kid, like a younger adult, and I had to go to prison. Literally since then, I've had a clean slate, and I'm this way. This has been like kid stuff, like, you know, over 20 years ago. >> And I didn't like it to start with. So, if you don't mind me asking, what was it? >> I used to smoke pot really heavily and I've tried almost everything. I've tried almost everything but one time. And uh I realized I do like and I do still smoke that but I don't have any or nothing like that. I don't buy it. I don't have the money for it. But if somebody offers it to me, I'll see. Yeah, >> I got you. But today any drinking at all today? No. >> Any today? You're going to have to go to jail. >> Why? >> You're going to have to go for because everybody has said >> you said you're going to have >> Can I tell my boyfriend please? >> You will be able to call him. You will be able to call him. >> I don't know his number. He's got my phone. >> Calm down. >> No, I need to tell him. >> Calm down. This is freaking stupid. >> I'm going to go ahead and put >> She's not going to see it. >> Travis, get grandpa. Get >> Come here. >> Get >> calm down. >> We're trying to make a scene or what? >> You're making it worse. >> I need to get him out. >> You're making it worse. >> She has ruined that machine. >> Yeah, you've ruined it now. So that >> Let me ask you some more questions. So you were saying that there was >> I love you. Tell them the truth now. You tell them the truth. >> So we found both of them. >> All right, let's go to the car. Travis, >> come on. I got to tell him. Can you come to the car, please? Can you come to Stop pulling me? I got broken bones and godam. Come on. >> Stop pulling me. I got broken. >> Sit in the car. >> I'm trying to. Travis, you said he can come to the car. >> Yes, he can come to the car. >> Travis, >> can you grow up? >> No. I need to tell him something. >> Well, we're getting in the car and going to jail. That's what we're >> sure. Look, we're not going to let my daughter out here, man. >> You want to quit yelling like that so your daughter doesn't know? >> You're looking bad in front of your kid. Get in the car, please. Don't touch me. I'm getting >> Get in the car. Get in the yard. quit. >> At the same time, her past with her ex-husband was also revealed. >> I don't know. Your mom was upset with her, so they're going to figure out what to do. I think they just wanted to get in the car with the cold air. >> Are you going to arrest her? >> The investigator here, so I don't know exactly what they're going to do. I just wanted to get to know you a little bit. So, your friends are found. They're fine. Can you tell me about your mom a little bit? Has she ever hit you? >> When my mom and my dad are together, they can get furious. Except right now they're broke up. >> Do they ever hit each other? >> Yeah, they fight. My mom says that one time my dad her and the nose had it started. >> Did you see that or did you just hear it like hear about it? >> Actually, I had myself locked up in the room and and it was so loud I could hear the whole thing thing through the door. >> Did anyone hit you today? >> No, they just tugged me by the arm. I was trying to grab onto the rails as they were dragging me and they took my hand and went like this. [gasps] to get it loose from the rail. >> And who did that? >> My mom. >> What was she doing that for? Did she say >> she was trying to force me back in the room when I was trying to get a little bit of quiet time from those children that they already almost me two times, but they did me one time, but they almost did it a second. >> And that was before when you were trying to go outside to go to the stairs. >> Yeah. >> And then [snorts] the mother's boyfriend walked in. >> Do you want to talk to her? She's going for >> Yeah. For threating to hurt her daughter. You can talk to her. I'll roll down the window. >> She ran away, right? >> She does. Yes, >> that's new. >> Did she say she needs the ambulance? >> She happens all the time, which is very bad. She has seizures and stuff like that. Like seriously, like it does happen. >> I understand. >> She's very uh out of control and like she has Hey, look. What is >> I don't know about it, baby. What? She not going to give you the water. >> Did she say she need Do you need the ambulance? >> She wants some water. She feels dehydrated. >> Some water. >> She says she feels dehydrated. I guess she needs some water. She don't feel good. You can >> I It's all the way up. But I can open the partition so you can get more air. >> Are you ever scared of your mom? >> Yeah. >> Why? >> Because she she I mean I can't really say it. I'm going to have to say letter word because they're bad words. >> How old are you? I'm going to leave that up to you if you'd like to say a bad word. You're not going to be in trouble with us. I promise you. >> Okay. >> You do what you need to do to describe it. Okay. >> Because uh she'll go uh come out here and be all like, I'm going to your butt up. Or she'll be all like, I am going to you are. >> And has she ever done those things? >> No, she like she just likes to yell at me to scare me. And I think that's kind of getting her in trouble. It's making me think that it's going to happen and then it makes me tell people that it did happen. >> Do you believe that it was going to happen today if you came out of the bush? >> Yes, I did because she was yelling it from the top of her lungs. >> Well, that was a lot, wasn't it? Yes. A lot from me cuz uh I'm one of the ones where one yell in the base and I start getting scared. >> If I open this door, are you going to do anything? >> Nothing. I'm going to have this water. I promise not. I'm not I'm not combative. I'm really not. I'll hold it. Can you take one hand out, please? I want to chug this whole bottle. >> I can't take I can't takeight. >> They're not actually. They're actually extra. >> This bracelet can come off if that's what's me. I can't let you sit here and hold the water bottle and send her chug. That's inhumane. Somebody's going to hear about that picture for the water. Yet he didn't want to intervene forcefully as if their relationship was quite complicated. >> Get out anyhow because look here. Who's on the way? The grandparents. What happened to Gary? So they're gonna be here in a minute and maybe they can make you go to jail. Are you talking all that crap and being mean and all that other stuff saying all this stuff is you don't deserve it. >> Yeah, baby. I went to go swimming with your grandbabies and your daughter. I'm going to get the medicine your daughter needs right now. They got the truck. >> I know. I got the truck back here. Will her grandparents be able to come to and get her stuff from your apartment? Is that okay? If they come, there's nothing in there. >> Can she get her medicine? >> I'm going to get it for him. Thank you so much. I just went and picked it up from the grandparents right before and floats to go swim about a month ago with her with the grandparents about to be here. Gary, same thing happened. She did the same thing. She freaked out, spazzed out, ran off, and he had to grab her. He was going to go to Cop County Jail, but he didn't go to Cop County Jail because the simple fact that, you know, the police came out like, "We'll take her to go get her evaluated at the hospital. If you get evaluated before this time at at Kennstone, will not arrest us. But if not, go to jail. You don't have money out. >> I'll get you out. Don't worry about it. Why you talking about I don't have money now? Well, you don't have to worry about that. You ever been bonded out before? No, you ain't. Cuz nobody's binged you out ever, but I'm going to b you out. >> It's hard to see it like from a different perspective. Unless you know, like like the grandparents say the same thing. I hope they tell the truth cuz it did happen. >> Okay. Well, thank you. I appreciate it. >> This time the girl felt some relief after telling everything. Though what she went through was hard to accept thanks to the police's reassurance. Her hope of seeing her old friends again was not yet lost. >> You were saying today that your mom grabbed your arm, it was like pulling you, right? >> And it popped. >> And it popped. Okay. What do you mean it popped? >> She kind of popped a bone or something. Yeah. You know when you tug your arm so hard that it go >> your shoulder? >> Yeah. When you tug your arm so hard that it goes >> is now. >> Well, really this is the one that popped. And right here feels weaker than the the same spot on this arm, but it doesn't hurt. It just lost a little bit of energy. >> Does that happen a lot where she'll grab you and pull you around or something like that? >> No, because I don't see her much. >> Does it happen when you see her? >> Yes. >> Every time? >> Not every time. Sometimes. >> How often do you see her? >> Once in a month or something. >> This type of thing happens once every two months or once every month. What do you think? >> I once every 3 or 4 months. I'm just now getting used to going somewhere being quiet. I think she still thinks that I'm going to run off somewhere. >> Did you used to do that? >> Yes. >> Why? because um I like to get away from a family member every once in a while that's better than me. >> It's like to be alone sometimes. >> Yeah, >> I get that. I love being alone. That's like my favorite place. >> But until I learned about that, but now that I'm doing it, she still thinks that I'm going to run off. So she so she tries to stop me every time I need a little private place and then just turns everything into just like this. Like I was just trying to get a little relaxing. I'm on the stairs by myself. No bothers. Apparently, she thought I was going to run off. Then everything turned into this because of that. >> Well, I'm sorry that this happened today. Is there anything I can do to make you feel better today? >> You've already done it. The only thing I wanted to know if that my friends were safe. >> Your friends are safe. Both of them are upstairs. >> Grandma's going to be here in a few minutes to get you okay. Is that okay if you go back with grandma? >> But you do know that my mom lied to me about that. She said that I was going to get to stay. >> To be fair, that was we decided to call your grandma. Yeah. >> And we wanted to pick out who was best to be with you tonight. She's not mad at you. She's really mad at us. And she's just not I wouldn't want you to stay with her tonight. She's fighting with everybody. She's fighting with us, fighting with her boyfriend. We just think it'd be better and more peaceful for you to just get away for the night and be able to take a breath and have that relaxation time. >> How long do you think it'll take for me to come back? I was kind of looking forward to our plans today. >> I don't know, but you can talk to grandma about it. She might be able to help you figure it out. >> Your mom and grandma will be able to figure it out. This isn't a permanent thing. This is just for tonight. >> I don't live with any children. So, it gets kind of fun when I get to hang out with kids >> cuz my life is like a solid of rock. No one apparently anyone plays. I can say that people play with every once in a while, but most of the time it's sitting around and watching television. That's boring. >> You like to be outside? >> Yeah. Yeah. I like to run around and play, but I have no kids at that house. It can get very boring. Every once in a while, I just want to stay with kids my own close to my age. That's why you're so excited. >> Well, I'm sure you'll be able to come back at some point. Okay. >> Yeah. Plus, it's been a long time since I played with the pool, too. >> Were you at the pool? >> Oh, we were going to be in the pool. That's why I'm wearing this. >> I like your swimsuit. >> Plus, can get a little bit boring and lonely. No wonder I can be so dumb sometimes because my life is so miserable. We're trying to help you out and make you feel I think you're going to be a little bit safer with grandma. >> Can I know what makes you think that? >> Yeah. >> What makes you think? >> You know how you said that mom said she was going to you up and you said you were kind of scared? Yeah. I don't want you to be scared. That's why >> pretty much I'm not scared anymore. Earlier we were hugging and we were both crying and making each other feel safe. >> That's good. Well, I bet grandma's going to help make you feel really safe, too. I just think it's the best thing for right now. Mom's kind of yelling at everybody. She's kind of mad at us right now. She's not mad at you, but she's mad at us. >> Can I go inside and change? These aren't my clothes. >> Of course. When grandma gets here, she'll she'll take you inside and you can change. Okay. >> The girl still felt guilty about her mother going to jail and worried about her friends. But the good news, she was about to find peace with her grandparents. >> Why are you sad? >> This is not how I plan my day to go out and I did not plan my mother to go to jail. Sometimes things happen. Those things happen for a reason, right? You didn't decide for any of that to happen. You didn't make your plans not happen. And you didn't make your mom get in trouble. >> You're right. I was trying to get a little quiet time. >> And you did everything just fine. >> But I don't know who's going to look after my friends. They're little. >> Her boyfriend's like grandchildren, right? >> Yeah. >> Does she treat you like she treats them or does she treat you a little worse? >> Treats me a lot worse. It's so hot. I got your floaty and your uh medicine. He said that you can keep the swimsuit. So, y'all are good with taking >> She lives with it. >> Okay, perfect. Do y'all have any questions, comments, concerns for me? >> No, we go through this a lot. >> It was really nice to meet you today. You okay? >> They're not mad at you at all >> right now. It's okay. >> Her arm is okay. So, >> I promise they're not mad at you. It's okay. Where's your >> No, they're not mad at you at all. >> Where's your shoes, baby? You can't sheep. >> Those kids decided they wanted to dress me up. He said that she's good to keep everything that she's got on her. >> She needs to get her stuff out of the apartment. Which apartment is it? >> I have no idea. I don't know the number of it. >> You don't know the apartment that you're at? >> Yeah, I know the apartment I'm at, but I don't know what number it is. She can get her stuff later. I'll get it for her when I find out. It's just a pair of jeans. >> He is. They've both asked that no one, including us, can go up there. I'm going to try to talk to him and try to get him to bring the stuff down. >> Did he not come up there? >> Yeah, he did that. >> It's the property. We don't have a crime inside of it. property. >> The apartment is what happened. >> That's about dog wrestling. If you don't mind, I cut back. >> You just stay over here. Okay. We're not going to run off. Okay. >> Well, these people are driving me nuts. >> No, they're not trying to. Okay. You're going to go with grandma and grandpa. Okay. >> Do I have to do this? >> Yeah. >> So far, you're not in trouble. >> Okay. We're going to give her some space and let her do them. >> In contrast, after so many mistakes, the mother still found excuses to cause chaos. even while sitting in the police car. >> I'll just tell him to call my mama, please. >> Can we get her clothes? >> I just don't have anybody else. Nobody's going to put >> Can we get her clothes? >> No, because it's not my place. He just said that they don't have she don't have nothing up there. I'll have to get it when I said she did. >> It's not my house. I'm not I don't know what number it is. We know where it's at. >> I don't hear all tight as and I can't move. Can't drink no water. It's not my place. I'm not sending the police there. >> The police aren't even trying to go up there. Your parents are. >> One thing is undeniable. The mother still fails to recognize the wounds she has caused, turning the world around her child into a stifling place, forcing her to retreat into the bushes just to escape and breathe. >> He's not answering and she don't want anyone going up there. >> Have trouble with her running running away, running off just like just like N. I asked her what happened to her arm and she, you know, run off. >> Yeah, she's been asked a lot by us. She told us, we asked her every single thing you could imagine. She said it was the dog. Do you usually just wait for a little while and just let her be quiet? Yeah. Do some deep breathing. >> I can't breathe with my legs in the way of my stomach. >> Stand up, baby. Get out my from under the bush. >> Well, I can't erase the words from Papa. That just won't my heart. >> Yeah, that's what made me want to go. >> Okay, we're sorry about that. >> We don't have to talk about it anymore. Okay. >> No, we're not. >> Uh, she said that it was from the dog in there. Sure. We had her checked out by fire. They came and checked her out and made sure that she was okay. >> Okay, let's get out from under there and we will get in the car. >> No, because I don't trust that people like after what Papa said, I trust anything. >> He just wanted to know what happened. >> He just wanted to make sure you're okay. That's all. >> That's not what I'm talking about. That's what I said before. You're bossy. >> I'm not bothering you. >> Yes, you are, baby. >> Come on. Come out. We'll We'll go get you some more shoes. Come on. We'll go right now. Go shopping and put some shoes. This guy before it gets too late and got big clothes. You ain't going to find no shoes. Come on. >> What's going on? >> Look at him. My real said that I might never come back here. >> Oh, he didn't mean all that. >> He didn't mean it. >> Everyone's just kind of emotional right now. We can tell them that you're allowed to come back. I promise. >> So, they may take me back here every once in a while to visit the [crying] kids. >> Absolutely. We'll make sure that he does. He, like I said, everyone's just emotional. It's hot. Everyone's had a long day. Nobody's in trouble. You're just fine. I'm sorry that we were asking you more questions about everything and that he he made you >> They were asking me the same questions that you guys did. Number one, and I already answered them a million times, so I got bored. Number two, I was followed when I was once again just trying to clear my mind. Number three, after I was already worried about my friends not wanting to be my friends and they're worried about me, he started saying that I won't ever come back. Well, that's not true. They're just trying to figure everything out. But you'll be able to come back, okay? >> They didn't know what was going on here. They weren't here. They didn't know that we had already talked to you and everything. So, I I'll make you a promise, okay? I'll tell him that you you can come back here. I'll tell both of them not to talk to you about it tonight, okay? Because it's been a long day. You don't have to worry about it anymore today, okay? >> Uh-huh. But the most important thing is that they take me back here every once in a while. >> I will tell them to, okay? Cuz we want you to be able to play, too. You think they made trust me a sleepover? That's what I was going to do today. That's what got me so excited. >> There will be more sleepovers. >> I only had one sleepover in my entire life since I was a toddler. And now all of my friends are gone. Too late for any sleepover. >> Yes, you will be able to sleep over. I promise. Sleepovers are fun. >> Uh-huh. But that's why that was so important to me. >> I understand that. >> And my grandpa said no. >> I understand that. Like I said, I don't think he understood really what was going on. >> I just want a piece of paper and to know what floor they're on and what number their door is. >> Okay, >> that's all I want. I get the signal to how to get there. >> I will get your uh grandparents to get that for you. Okay, I promise. >> And they'll be able to do phone calls, too. >> You'll be able to come back, I promise. And do sleepovers and go to the pool and hang out with your friends. >> Do you think you can get out of the bushes for us just so you can get in some pool? Yeah, but that's no I was I went in the bushes cuz I was heartbroken. >> It's okay. It's okay to feel like that. But you're going to be able to see them again. Okay. You think you can come out this way under here and we'll get you in the air conditioning where it feels a little bit better. Thank you for talking to us today. It was really nice to meet you. You got it. >> And finally, we should not forget to thank the police officers who kindly came to help and gently comforted the girl that day. >> Thank you all so much. Of course. Hey, her her main concern was just that whether you guys want her to come back here or not, that's up to you guys. She felt upset saying that. >> I don't think I don't think 10 people will ever come back. >> Maybe. Maybe not. >> She's a handful. >> I hope you have a good night. Okay. Go watch a good movie or something. >> We're going to make it good. >> Best luck to you guys. >> We need it. [laughter] >> The mother was arrested and held on charges of child. Under Georgia law, this offense can carry up to 10 years in prison with bail ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 or higher, depending on the severity of the case. Although justice has been served, the girl's psychological wounds remain. Parents should remember love, patience, and respectful behavior are the best tools to guide their children, not physical or emotional. In Minnesota, an urgent call in the middle of the afternoon brought police to witness the storm raging behind the door caused by the father. >> I'm going to take that as a threat. And now I got every right to put you in the ground. >> On March 23rd, 2025, police received an emergency call from a 12-year-old girl reporting that her own father, Brandon Chapensky, had assaulted her. They rushed to the scene at once, but to their surprise, they were met with a man who not only refused to cooperate, but also acted with extreme aggression. Hey, how you doing? What's going on tonight? My >> girlfriend. >> Okay. Fine. What's What's he doing? >> I don't Do you know Brandon Chapensky? >> You might want back up because he's acting like a [ __ ] >> Okay. How you doing, man? >> What you want? >> Hey, come out and talk to me. >> No, I don't need to. >> All right. Somebody called. >> Here we go. Bye. >> No. No. Scout 9510. Get me another unit out here. >> What you going to do? You can't do [ __ ] Get a warrant. >> Come out here, man. >> You want to play, >> Brandon? We're not We're not doing that. >> Want to play? >> Come out here and talk to me. >> Move. >> We're not doing this. >> You want to play? >> I don't want to play anything. >> I'm not slamming the door. We're not doing this. >> Who called you? >> Don't Don't ball your fist up with me, man. >> Oh, I'm holding my thumb. Okay. you if I'm going to blow my pistol up back here. >> I'm not here to talk to me, man. >> I'll you in the ground. >> You're not That's not going to happen. >> You want to bet? >> I'm just trying to see what was Someone was concerned. Somebody called. It doesn't matter who. >> Yep. Now who? >> It doesn't matter. >> Who called? >> It doesn't matter, man. I just want to make sure everyone's safe. >> Everybody's safe. Thanks for stepping up. >> No, that's not how this is going to work. >> How many people are in the house? >> Step step up here and me one more time. Take one more step and now you're me and I'm going to put you in the ground. All right, here's what's going to happen. Somebody called 911. I'm here to make sure everything's all right. >> I'm going to talk to everybody in this house. >> Everything's fine. >> All right. I'm not >> He kept cursing anding the police until they were forced to draw a taser. >> My door one more time. Things could have been different if the adults had stayed calm and respected the law. When police close each case, the question is not only who broke the rules, but also who fell short in their responsibility toward children. What happens in hospitals, on [music] the streets, in neighborhoods, or in temporary housing reflects adults care, self-control, and conduct.
