Some mornings start with a bowl of cereal. Others begin with worry, uncertainty, and a call to the authorities. My son is out of control. He wants to smoke. He wants to fight. He wants to be belligerent, talk crazy, reckless. On August 22nd, 2023, Atlanta police were called to a school after reports of a 13-year-old boy showing unusual marks on his head with a mother potentially involved. According to her, the situation arose from communication conflicts between mother and son. I'm not here to talk to you. You have no no rights right now in the present moment. You're not under arrest. So keep going. Keep going. I told him to stop. That's what That's what brought that that He said he don't want to smoke it. I don't even have no soda cans. That sounds like chastisement. Yeah. Not battery. Would you agree? Yeah. Cuz if my son or daughter were telling me to go [ __ ] myself, I'd punch him in the face. Okay, cool. Cool. Can y'all talk to him? Where is he? I'll go get him. Maybe an information 17 as a CYA. True. I'm really good at this. I already have an unruly person. That's all we can do. Listen, I understand your frustration but we don't have no control over the juvenile system. Trust me, if we did, things would be completely different. We have no control. That's why you You know how you if you go to court, where you guys go to court? You got me? Big court. He goes to where he goes to court. You got me? Juvenile. When separated for questioning, the boy shared instances of his mother expressing frustration related to meals, school, [music] and messages she sent to relatives, which officers documented. All right, what happened this morning? I was in the house cuz I just got back yesterday. Hold on. Hold on. I was about to ask you, do you need me to step out? Let me step out. All right, go ahead. All right, go ahead. Yeah, I just got back yesterday. I was in the house, woke up from a cold, so All right. made me a bowl of cereal. All I know is like she had like a little can, I think it was car wheel or something, like a mini can. It was like Let me see. Like this. Yeah, take it back then. No. hit me on the side of my head. But, she's trying to throw me. She hit me and hit me and hit me on the back of my head. Pulled my hair, wouldn't let go of my hair and stuff like that. Okay. She stopped, and we got back in the car and started driving. Dropped my brother off at the Okay. So, what were y'all arguing It started off with us arguing about us eating some food. Okay. And then she just made it off of that. Okay. That was like, she kept saying like how she buy everything and all Okay. Like, wanting me to buy everything. So, then she got mad and stuff like that. So, then she pulled the car over, and she just started fighting again. Were you calling her out of her mother's name? No, I wasn't. You weren't disrespectful? I wasn't calling her out of her name. I was about to cuss the coach out, but I wasn't calling her out of her name. I told her what you tripping on. What was it that she hit you with? It was like a metal can with some type of liquid inside of it. Kind of like a spray bottle, but just a metal can. Yeah, like a little short bottle. She had it in her hand like this. Hit me in the head with it, and then he got the car and walked around. Did stuff like that. Hit me in the head with it and stuff like that. Then she started hitting and bullying me with her head and stuff like And you didn't fight her back at all? Just take a breath for a second, man. Sounds like the most rehearsed video I've heard in a while. Hey, I'm pretty sure he called the police. What did dispatch tell you to report? They asked me to call law enforcement, and then I stated our school resource officer already called them, and then she just said, "Okay." And then she was like, "Could we not send out a child home with the mother?" But, I said, "We don't have no paperwork for over there." And then she said the dispatch lady asked me for his grandmother number, and I gave it to her. So, she said that she was calling us. But, I spoke When I spoke with the grandmother, she said that she's not going to release him to her. So, Okay. Yeah, just kind of Let's see if we can get her to agree to releasing him to the grandmother for at least tonight, so it doesn't elevate or escalate any further. Thank you. Yeah, but She said she had no idea I'm not 100% sure. Who picked up the car, Gilbert? Where are those keys at? White. I don't know who did the keys. White had the keys. White picked up the car. Yeah. Uh I'm not 100% sure. I'm I'm dealing with this at the moment. Give me a call. Not without you. All right. Does grandma live with you? No. Do you want the kid to go home with grandma? I do. My son is out of control. He wants to smoke. He wants to fight. He wants to be belligerent, call crazy, reckless. This is not the first altercation we've had. He went into our vault at the house. He stole my I have an open case about that. He was just at my mother's house cursing. He got my mother He cursed my mama all the way out. Did he come home to your house? He came home yesterday when I got How long had he been at grandma's house? >> He hadn't been at grandma's house. He walked to Ms. Bobby's house in Fulton County. Um out of curiosity, is that your phone? No, this is my phone. Okay. Come here, this is your mom. Are you okay going and staying at your grandma's house tonight? >> Yeah. You don't disrespect your grandma? I mean, that's what usually when stuff like this How often does stuff like this with your mom happen? All right, it's just some days it's like off and on, it's like So, no bull, is sometimes it your fault? >> Sometimes, yeah. It's her fault? We'll figure it out, but I think you're probably going to go home to your grandma's tonight. In the end, authorities stepped in to ensure the boy's well-being. This shows that every child has the right to grow up in a safe [music] environment, and sometimes outside support is necessary to uphold that right. Mom actually told me she would prefer him go home to grandma's tonight. Yeah. She's probably the one who did it. She admitted to She just lied to us. With whatever you want to do. So, dispatch said we can't do anything, we don't have Can I take him first? You don't want to What's up? I know how my daughter is. My daughter is bipolar, she don't take medicine. When I tell you she cut up, she cut up. Well, she was ready to go earlier. She had put her hands in front of her and everything. I'm a little bipolar, too, so Well, everybody is these days. These days, yeah, everybody got their moments. There is I might flare up, too. Oh, okay. Well, then go with that. So, yeah. So, Makai is in there. I don't know if they're going going to let him stay in school, or if they're She said he would start tomorrow. >> Yeah, he he remember he they were enrolling him. >> Okay. So, what should I do? Just go tell her, "Hey, I'm about to take him to the ER cuz they said he needs stitches." We're going to go ahead and get her detained. Can you do it outside? You never know who's in here. Anyway. I know who's in here. Dude, I mean, why you want to do it out here? I just can't. I'd rather be in a confined space than Can you email me those texts? I need your ID as well. This is what's going to end up happening. Your mom's going to go to jail for battery. She lied to us and said she just did it with her hand, but then she texted grandma that she hit you with the bottle. She's going to go to jail for battery. You're technically not enrolled here yet, right? Tomorrow's supposed to be your first day. Grandma's going to take you to go get looked at and probably get a couple stitches, and then you're going to go home with her. Be nice to your grandma tonight, all right? Cuz she's going through a lot right now, too. Charge with battery, charge with two counts of cruelty to children, and one false report. How am I false reporting? Because you told me you didn't hit your son with the can. What's that? But, I didn't hit him with the can. Yeah, I got text messages that you hit him with the can. Sir, that text message was sent wrong. I didn't He got hit with something because that is a good-size laceration that needs stitches. Look at my forehead. Look at this gash. Look, we were fighting in the back of the car, and I headbutted him. I honestly don't know. How am I being arrested in this child? Like, I have so many cases against him. With the disrespect and the and the fighting and the smoking and the everything. >> With the extent of the injury and it requiring stitches, it clearly went past a level of just chastising the child, which is why you're going to jail. Sir, look at my forehead. Look at this knot on my forehead. I understand that's because you were headbutting him and hitting him. You weren't just hitting him once to say, "Don't talk to me like that." This obviously was more. Continuously being I hate you. All this is brother my baby son in the back seat and everything. I stopped my car, and I got out of my car. I'm not going to deal with the disrespect. I'm tired of it. I'm sick of it. I work Look at my car. Look at the car. He tore up my damn car. car with a bat. I went downtown and got a petition. I'm with Mothers Against Gang Violence. The mother was charged with battery. Under Georgia law, she could face 1 to 10 years in prison. This situation reminds us that a family's [music] greatest value is not control or authority, but love, safety, and the ability to grow and learn together through life's challenges. The father repeatedly claimed to be a DHS employee to avoid responsibility, but his confusing explanations only made the situation more awkward in front of the officers. You don't have any type of credentials or anything to say you're DHS? Not on me, no. On August 13th, 2025, traffic patrol officers noticed a truck moving erratically, swerving across lanes on the famous Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys. When they approached, they observed a concerning detail. Two boys, ages 7 and 9, were seated in the back. Hello. Uh can you roll down the the back windows for me, too? Sorry, you got you got roll down, too. Hello. Uh is this Scott? Where where are you coming from? Miami down here to uh Islamorada and then back. So, you're coming from Miami to Islamorada, and you're going back to Miami? Yeah, I live in Miami. Okay. Do you know where you are right now? Yeah. What Where are you? Look at the overpass over here, 18 mile stretch, Overseas Highway. Okay. What What did you What did you do today? What'd you go? Did you go fishing? Did you go >> bro. to a restaurant? What You're You're You're about 100 miles off of where you think you are. >> You are. Who's the guy in the white shirt? That's the colonel. Colonel, tell me Okay. Uh I'm federal. Okay. I'm trying to get home. I got my boys with me. Who do you work for? DHS. Do you have your ID with you? No, I don't. Okay. But, if I called them, they'd verify that you're a 100% bro. Okay. You don't have any type of credentials or anything to say you're DHS? Not on me, no. Okay. All right. >> normally bring my weapon with me if I'm if I'm Okay. But, you don't have any weapons on you right now? No, I don't. So, what I want to do, I want to talk to you away from the kids. So, I'm going to ask you to step out of the car, and we're going to walk back to the back of your car, okay? Are you serious right now? Yes, sir, I am. Although he claimed to be a DHS employee, the man showed clear signs of fatigue and distraction. Can you just come over here for me? Okay. So, you said you're coming from Miami, going to Islamorada, and going back to Miami. What are you going to Islamorada for? Guys, seriously, are we are we really doing this right now? I'm just asking a question. You said you're going to Islamorada. What are you What are you going to Islamorada for? Lane. Yeah. Are we really doing this right now? Sir, I'm just asking a simple question. You don't have to answer if you don't want to. But you said you're going to Islamorada, so I'm just asking what you're going for. Guys. Is that How much have you had to drink today? About four. Four what? Four drinks. Like water, alcohol, beer. What'd you drink? Kool-Aid? Are you guys really trying to screw me right now? I'm just asking what you you look like you're impaired. I smell alcohol coming from you, so I'm just asking how much you had to drink to make sure you're not too impaired to drive that vehicle. Okay. How about this, guy? Again, I think that you might be impaired. You You look Your eyes are bloodshot. They're kind of glassy. >> Are they really? Yes, sir, they are. Show me. I don't know how you want me to do that. Take a picture. Okay. We get We can do that in a minute. Um but the other reason why I think you're impaired is just the way you're walking. You were kind of stumbling a little bit. >> walking anywhere. And then also the way that you were seen driving, you're like kind of swerving and stuff. And then the the colonel tried to pull you over and you didn't immediately stop. You stopped here on the bridge. You tried to stop you at a safer spot a little bit back there. Okay. doing this. Okay. So again, I believe that you may be impaired by alcohol and or some type of chemical substance which may inhibit your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. So I'm going to ask you voluntarily participate in standardized field sobriety exercises to dispel my belief you may be impaired. Are you willing to do those exercises? >> Yeah. You'll do them? Yeah. Okay. As the officers began their evaluation, the man repeatedly delayed, argued, [music] and brought up personal stress and difficulties to buy time. Okay, so am I. I'm a recognition expert. Do you know what that is? Okay. Anyway, so what I'm going to have you do, uh if you can, uncross your feet and just put them like side by side. And then your arms, if you could, just try to put them down by your side like that. Okay. So what I'm going to have you do is just keep your head straight and you're just going to keep your head like aimed straight at me, basically. And then I'm going to look at your eyes. Okay? Do you understand? Yep. Uh are you diabetic? No. Are you epileptic? No. Okay. Do you have any brain injuries? I'm a disabled veteran. Okay. Have you ever had a traumatic brain Yes, I have. Okay, does it affect your ability to operate a vehicle? Guys, come on. Okay. Well, I'm just asking what your injury is. Does it affect you in your everyday life? Do you know what nystagmus is? Onset of nys- onset of nystagmus, yes. Okay. But do you know what nystagmus is? Yes, I do. Okay. Do you have nystagmus? Guys, are we really doing this? Do you have any medical issues that I need to know about? Are you on blood thinners, painkillers? Lane. Yep. Talk to me. I'm talking to you right now. Don't do this. I'm just talking to you, man. It's all right. It's It's all right. Take Take a breath. If you haven't drank too much to to not be able to operate a vehicle safely, then, you know, >> Lane. Yeah. Come on, guys. We are both wrong person. I'm just I'm going through a divorce. Don't take my kids, man. I'm not taking your kids from you, man. I'm just making sure that you're safe to drive the car. Okay? Do you have any other medical issues that I need to know about? I don't know. Just any medical issues that might I've been shot at. Okay. Sorry, man. Take a deep breath. >> Don't tell my kids. I'm not. You're all right. Take a deep breath. You're okay. I've been shot at. People have tried to me. I just want to go home, guys. Come on, man. I got you, man. >> We've been We've Come on. We know what's up. We've been We're up and down this road before. Problem is is that we're at this point right now. I understand that. >> And you know that I have to do what I have to do. I understand that, but my boys are everything. Okay. Where's uh their mom at? I don't know. Do they have anyone down here that would be able to take care of them? I'm not saying you're going with me, man, but you're you're all worried about this stuff. I'm just trying to figure out, you know, if there's someone else around here that, you know, maybe they could come drive the car if you think maybe you you drank too much to drive. Guys, no. No? They're my everything. Okay. So no medical problems that are going to affect your ability to follow my finger? Okay. So again, what I'm going to have you do is just keep your head straight and I'm just going to have you follow the tip of my finger with your eyes and I'm just going to go side to side and then I'm going to go up and down. I'm going to do a circle around your head and I'm going to tell you what I'm doing before I do it, okay? I'm not going to touch you or anything, but again, I just want you to follow my finger with your eyes and don't move your head. Do you understand? Yep. Okay. Ready? Yep. Okay. If you can, just Can you just like make your head straight? You're kind of lean your head to the side a little bit. There you go. Uh so what I'm going to do now is vertical, so I'm just going to go up and down, okay? Ready? Same thing. Just follow with your eyes. Don't move your head. Ready? Okay. And now I'm going to do uh just two small circles around your head. Here, I'll show you what it looks like. So I'm going to go like this around your head and then I'm going to bring it in between your eyes to your nose, but I'm not going to touch you, okay? So don't don't flinch or anything. I'm not going to touch you, okay? All right. Ready? All right. One more time. Ready? Okay. So what So this time, try to just look at my finger. Don't anticipate where it's going to go, okay? You're kind of looking ahead of my finger. Just try to follow it, okay? I'll go a little bit slower. Just look at my finger. Okay. After the eye examination was completed, all attempts by police to provide explanations and guidance were further delayed by the man's repeated line, "Give me a minute." So the next thing I'm going to have you do is the walk and turn. We can probably do it right here. I don't know how easy this would be for you to do in flip-flops or if it'd be easier in your Lane, I just want to get my kids home. I got you, man. Come on. I'll tell you a true story. I went through the same thing 2 years ago. >> You divorced? No. I am. This. I'm going through a divorce right now. Look, man, you I You drank too much to drive a car. No, I haven't. You did. Let me get my kids home. You can't drive a car right now, man. That's not what I'm seeing so far unless, you know, if you do good on this, maybe I'm wrong. That's why we're doing these so that you can dispel my belief that you're impaired, okay? Because right now, what I'm seeing, the the stumbling and stuff, I want to see if you can do this stuff. >> Stumbling? I'm not doing anything. I'm sitting right here. Well, no, no. When you walked out of the truck at first, you kind of It looked like it. Maybe I'm wrong, okay? But that's what this stuff is for so that we can dispel that belief that I have that you're impaired, okay? The next thing we'll do is the one light or the uh the walk and turn, okay? So what I'm going to have you do is put your left foot on this line right here. If you can, just step forward. I don't want you to be touching the truck at all. Just a little bit forward. Just so you're not next to the truck. There you go. And now you're going to put your right foot in front of your left foot touching heel to toe. Your right foot in front of your left foot touching heel to toe. Perfect. All right. And if you can, put your arms back down by your side. Arkin, try to stand there just in case. So again, just put your right foot back in front. And then your arms straight down by your side. There you go. Now just stay like that. If you fall If you If you have to put your hand up, just put it right back down, okay? Okay, so just stay like that. Don't do anything else until I tell you to. Do you understand? Okay, so if you can, just try to get back in that position. >> Well, I want to know if I'm Well, that part of the directions is that you're supposed to be standing like that while I give the directions. That's okay. All right. Um so the position that you're supposed to be in right now is like this. Left foot on the line, right foot in front touching heel to toe. What I'm going to have you do in just a second is I'm going to have you take nine heel to toe steps down the line. I'm going to have you touch every time heel to toe, heel to toe. So Yep. Heel to toe. Heel to toe. You're going to keep your feet on the line, okay? If you stop walking or if you step off the line for any reason, I want you to just put your foot back on the line and keep walking. And I want you to count your steps out loud. Do you understand so far? Yep. So again, just to recap where we're at right now, your left foot is on the line with your right foot in front, your arms straight down by your side. You're going to take nine heel to toe steps. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Once you get to that ninth step, you're going to keep the lead, the front foot, on the line and then you're going to use your back foot to take a series of small steps to turn around. And then you're going to take nine heel to toe steps back down the line. Do you understand so far? Yep. So, I'm going to show you how it's going to look. Uh so, again, my left foot is on the line like you. My right foot is in front touching heel-to-toe. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Take the back foot off. Leave the lead foot on the line like this. You're going to take a series of small steps like this. And then you're going to take nine heel-to-toe steps back down the line. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Do you understand those instructions, sir? Yeah. Okay. Could you get back in the starting position for me, please? Just left foot on the line and right foot in front. >> you, Lane. Okay. Give me a minute. Okay. He continued repeating his old tactics, mentioning work, children, pressure, and requesting a supervisor. Meanwhile, simple yes or no answers had still not been given. All right, you got it, man. You can do it, okay? I don't You don't understand me. Okay. I just don't want to be standing on the side of the road any longer when we have >> What about this? Okay. Would you like to try uh the one-leg stand instead? I can show you the one-leg stand if you'd like. >> Okay. Come on. Guys, I'm going through a divorce right now. My wife is trying to take my kids. Just give me a minute. Okay. Okay, man. We It's either a yes or a no. Just give me a minute, all right, deputy? >> I did give you a minute, sir, but we can't we can't stand here for for this long, okay? >> Lane. Yes, sir. I'm federal law enforcement. I'm going through a divorce. My wife is trying to take my kids. I'm just Give me a minute, all right? Okay. >> You know what it's like. You know what it's like to be law enforcement. >> Well, how long do you need, buddy? Just give me a minute, all right? Guys, how If we give you a minute, are you going to do the exercise? I will do it. I have Okay. Like I said, I just don't like us standing here in the road, man. >> either, but you don't want my kids in my life. I got you. No, you don't. Do you got kids? Exactly. Do you have kids? >> No. Exactly. So, you don't know what it's like. You know what? Call my supervisor. Okay. Do you want to do the exercises or no? >> I'll do it. But, you know what? What's homeboy doing down there? You know, guys, come on. He's I'm just trying to do the exercise that way we can That's all I'm trying to do the exercise that way we can Are you Haitian? That's nothing to do with my race, buddy. My question was, are you Haitian? It It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter where he's from. Look, man, I really need you to do the exercise. If you don't If you don't do it, then I'm going to say that you're refusing to do the exercise. I get it, you need a minute. I gave you a few minutes, okay? But Let me talk to your supervisor. Not right now, sir. Yeah. That's not how this works. You can talk to him at It is how it works because you guys are local. Okay, that's not a statute or a law or a policy or anything that we have. He's the second from the top underneath of the sheriff, okay? He's the one that pulled you over. Okay. If you want to talk to him, we can, but right now I'm in the mid I'm in the middle of a of an investigation. You're not going to talk to my supervisor in the middle of my investigation. When I'm concluded with my investigation, with whichever way that goes, whether it's you in your car driving away or you in the back of my car in handcuffs, if you want to talk to my supervisor then, then by all means, you can. When I'm in the middle of an investigation, it's you and me, no one else, okay? So, this is This is the last chance I'm going to give you, okay? Do you want to do the walk-and-turn exercise? What answer would the officers finally receive to their yes no question? Yeah, I'll do it. Okay. So, again, put your left foot on the line and then put your right foot in front touching heel-to-toe and your arms straight down by your side. Okay, I'm going to show you the instructions again real quick just to to refresh your memory, okay? So, left foot on the line, right foot in front touching heel-to-toe. Take nine heel-to-toe steps. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Keep the front foot on the line. Take the back foot off the line and you're going to take a series of small steps with the back foot to turn around. And then you're going to take nine heel-to-toe steps back down the line. Do you understand the instructions? I do. Okay. I want to talk to your supervisor. Again, sir, once we're done with the investigation, you are more than welcome to talk to anyone that you would like. Okay, you may begin. Awesome. Uh so, for the next one, the one-leg stand, we can come over here just so we're not in the road anymore. Scott, can you walk over to me, please? Do you want to do the one-leg stand exercise? Why are you being mean, man? All right, so just take a couple steps forward, like right here. Do this first. Okay. Well, in order for me to instruct you on how to do the exercise, I need you to stand over here. Awesome. Thank you so much, Scott. So, if you can, just put your feet together with your heels touching, okay? And now put your arms straight down by your side. And your arms straight down by your side like this, Scott. Thank you. There you go. So, heels touching, arms straight down by your side. You stay like that. Don't do anything else until I tell you to. Do you understand so far? Yep. So, when I tell you to, I'm going to tell you to raise one foot. You can choose the right or the left. You're going to raise it approximately 6 in off the ground. You're going to keep your foot parallel to the ground and you're going to look at the elevated foot while you count out loud in the following manner. 1,001, 1,002, 1,003, 1,004, and so on and so forth until I tell you to stop. Do you understand the instructions so far? >> Yep. Okay. So, again, the way that it's going to look, your arms are straight down by your side, your feet are together. I'm going to tell you to begin and you're going to choose You choose either your left foot or your right foot. So, when I say begin, if you want to pick up your left foot, you're going to pick it up about 6 6 in off the ground, again keeping your foot parallel to the ground while you keep your eyes on the elevated foot. Do you understand that so far, Scott? As the patience of both officers and the father reached its limit, his responsibility gradually became clear, despite his dismissal of the evaluation process as unimportant. Do you understand the instructions, sir? >> I do. Okay. So, again, the way that it's going to look, I'm going to show you one more time. I'll do it with my right foot this time. I'm going to say begin. You're going to raise your foot about 6 off the ground. It's about size of a soda can, okay? 6 parallel to the ground and your feet on the elevated foot and you're going to count out loud. 1,001, 1,002, 1,003, and so on and so forth until I tell you to stop. Do you understand all the instructions, Scott? >> Okay. You may begin. 1,001 1,002, 1,003, 1,004 1,005, 1,006. Guys, what the [ __ ] are we doing right now? Seriously. Okay, Scott, can you be honest with me? How much did you drink today? I had about four. Four what? Drinks. Okay, a drink to me is alcohol or is a water. >> not drank in several weeks. Don't do this. Scott, look, man, your your eyes They're You know what nystagmus is. You told me that. Onset nystagmus, yes. Okay, onset nystagmus prior to 45° is one of the one of the things, okay? But, I really need to know what you drank, where you drank it. Is that I called uh >> I don't know what it's called. I don't remember what the [ __ ] it's called. Brewery? You don't know if it was like >> I have not drank in weeks. Did you eat anything today? Yeah. What did you eat? I made the boys some pancakes. This morning? Dinosaur pancakes. And what else did we have? Uh What the [ __ ] did we have? Pancakes. That's all I remember. All right, Scott. I need you to come back here with me, please. I'm not going to do this in front of your kids, man, but you got to come with me. If you're going to pull away, then I'll do it in front of your kids. Okay. Don't squeeze my hand. All right, let go. Just right up against my hood, sir. Do you have anything on you that's going to hurt us? No, man. >> Okay. At this point, concern for his children became apparent, mixed with pleas, confusion, and denial. The officers remained focused on reducing risks and ensuring everyone's safety. What about my kids? We're We're going to have to figure that out next. Damn it, Lane. Do you have any shield back there? Guys, please. I'm going through a divorce. Don't do this to me. Lane, come on, man. Yeah, I'm a law enforcement, dude. >> then stop talking and sit in the back of the car. No. Yes. Stop. >> What about my kids? We're We're going to take care of them. No. I'm not going in there. Let me talk to your supervisor. Again, you can talk to him in a second. >> No. Not going in there without my supervisor. Okay. Let's go to the other side. Come on. Come on, man. Don't cooperate, you go to jail for resisting. You don't want to make this worse. Come on, put your feet in, buddy. >> All right, your kids will be fine. This will pass. Listen to me. No, sir. Do you guys have a a cell phone? Do you have your own cell phones? No? Where Where does your mom live? Where Where does she live? Where does she live down here in the Keys? In Miami? Okay. If I were to give you my phone, would you know your mom's phone number? Oh, you do know it? Okay. Just when the situation seemed close to resolution, the father continued exhibiting unpredictable behavior behind the patrol vehicle. He's being All right. Thanks, sir. What, man? Lane, put this up front, man. No, dude. The way you're acting, No, cuz you're cuffing me. Bro, you're trying to like destroy the the sheriff's car right now. >> No, I'm not. Cuff me up front if you're going to cuff me. Look, if you really still want to have your job after this, you need to stop this. Then cuff me up front. >> No. That's not our policy. Our policy is that you're handcuffed in the back. There's no >> me somewhere. >> I am. We're trying to work out how we're going to get your and you're making it a lot more difficult cuz you're sitting back here acting like a child. Stop, man. Then put the air on. The air is on. No, it's not. >> It will Every time I roll the window down and open up my door, what do you think happens to all the AC? I get some air. Exactly. I get some air. >> Okay. Watch your head. No. Stop. Stop banging on the windows. If you want the AC to reach back to you, It doesn't. It will eventually. >> Lane. So, you'd rather have the window down like this? Yeah, I would. Okay. Fantastic. Lane. Yeah. Talk to me. Dude, there's nothing to talk about. And there is. There's not, man. We don't have anything to talk about after this. Yeah, we do, Lane. Lane. Do you want to call your boss on your phone? If you make a phone call on the jail phone, it records the conversation. If you want, I can call your boss for you like on the hood of my car and you can talk to him, or you can get your the phone number out of your phone inside the jail, but again, any calls you make inside the jail, it's recorded, so I want to make sure you don't say something dumb. So, um I never knew the process, obviously, before my own unfaithful day. Um anyway, what what happened, we're going to go to the jail, we're going to go into the breath test room. There's the uh Intoxilyzer 8000, the breath test instrument. We'll do two breath tests, and then after that, I will turn you over to the jail staff. They are going to take the handcuffs off you, and they're going to sit you by yourself since you're law enforcement, and a cell by yourself in the clothes you're wearing right now. And then after I'm done with my arrest report, I'm going to turn that into the jail, and then that's me officially turning custody of you over to the jail. The jail will then take your mug shot. They'll book you into the jail, basically. You'll get your own cell by yourself. Scott, I I swear to God, I really am doing everything that I can. The less talking as possible, the There you go. Got it. All right. It was reported that his blood alcohol level tested at 0.17, more than twice the legal limit in Florida. The father was charged with DUI and two counts of child injury. Under Florida law, he could face up to 10 years and 9 months in prison. No one is immune to pressure, mistakes, or moments of weakness, but society becomes safer when each person recognizes when to stop, especially when those behind us cannot protect themselves. The cries of a child exposed to unsafe conditions due to adult alcohol use in Florida hasn't even settled when Georgia faces another tragedy. Baby's not strapped in. Yeah. On September 4th, 2022, in Chamblee, Georgia, a head-on collision between a Nissan and an SUV erupted. The driver, under the influence of alcohol and breaking traffic laws, not only caused the crash, but also a young child, forcing police to intervene immediately and call for emergency medical services. I'll be down there to see you as soon as I find out where this guy is getting transported. 71, radio. Show me on the 41. What can I do? As they approached, the officers noticed a strong smell of alcohol, and the condition inside the vehicle required careful inspection. Broken nose? The oncoming uh Yeah. Okay. My assessment Otherwise, I smell something. Okay. I don't know, but I see the police over there. The lady coming this way. A ladder. I don't know the police is see or no see. I don't know. You see she going way on the road? yeah yeah. Yeah baby's not strapped in. Huh? Baby's not strapped in. Yeah. No. She's sitting on top of the on top of Nobody hurt here? Anybody hurt? No. 41 I need you to come translate for me. A young child showed signs of panic so the officers immediately comforted and cared for the child to ensure their safety. Who's driving? You. You're driving your license? I bring that here. >> Okay you got it. Who else was in the vehicle? Who else were they in the car with you? Yeah yeah my girl in the car. Okay. >> And my brother in the back. In the back? Where were they? On the passenger side or driver side? On the Left side. Okay. All right do you have ID? No. She got it. She got it already. Oh she already gave it to you? Okay. All right. Yeah I got it. I got Odo. Okay. Yeah. Car's covered with liquid. Did you she already give you baby's name? No I didn't get none of that. Okay. What's that? My head hurts. I'm sorry baby. Stay awake sweetie. It's okay. fracture Yeah. Okay. signs She's trying to keep her upright. It's not draining. She's What's going on? Does she have any injuries to the back of her head? Nothing that I saw. She didn't go back at all. Looks like she just went forward. Okay. You're a pretty girl. Don't go to sleep. I'm not going to go to sleep in here. She's pissed off too. Are there any other injuries? Such a ridge in the front of her sternum. When an officer tried to question her the mother responded uncooperatively. I haven't been drinking. All right let's take her in. Okay. How much have you had to drink? Uh nothing. Nothing to drink? I'll ask would you be willing to take that? All right. Was somebody drinking inside the car? No. Okay. Did you end up in the All right listen they're they're taking care of her okay? All right. Give me just one She was in this parking came in through the wrong way. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Not yet. Want to get some pictures and everything cuz it's going to be serious. Just chill with her for a second. I'm going to get a PBT on her before However the results from the breathalyzer told a completely different story. No do you have any medications? Ask her if she takes any prescriptions. Okay. Here just look right here okay? Breath like this. Can't stop. Go. I'm going to cut her on a citation or We'll just go wherever they're going to go. We don't know where y'all going. Okay. All right. LT She's significantly Okay. >> She agreed to PBT 0.151. I'm assuming you would want to cut her on a citation if we can identify her and since she's going to the hospital with baby. Yeah. I'm going to She's got ID in here so I'm going to grab that real quick and then we'll get her squared away. The mother was arrested and held on multiple charges. DUI, serious injury by vehicle, child safety restraint violation, first degree cruelty to children, injuring a child by DUI, driving without a valid license, driving on the wrong side of the road, and possession of an open container. Under Georgia state law if convicted she could face a total prison sentence of 11 to 40 years. Adult decisions directly impact children's safety. Therefore responsibility must always come first especially when children are present. A normal afternoon in Florida suddenly turned into a family tragedy. The mother claimed her 13-year-old daughter had hit her while she struggled with back pain and tried to protect her vape. And she stole my vape. Yeah. And she's 13. On February 12th, 2024 Sarasota police in Florida got an emergency call about a domestic violence case between a mother and daughter in a neighborhood. When they arrived they were met not with cooperation but with the mother's tense complaints about her stubborn daughter. This morning I went to chiropractor appointment. I came home to rest because I have a crooked spine. I can barely walk. Okay. I have a problem child okay? I'm putting her in virtual school. She's been kicked out several schools. She's been diagnosed with bipolar. Anyways she came into my room and wanted to take the remote and shut her the TV off cuz she was just in a bad mood calling me a like outbursting okay? She ran and she grabbed my remote. She grabbed my remote ran in there then threw it at me then ran back and as I was running back she came into my room in the room area and stole my vape okay? She won't She won't give it to me. So I said fine. She had food all in her bed. She had stuff She's She's been stealing my mother's cigarettes and taking the ashes and dumping them behind the dresser. I found that and I was I'm cleaning all her room out and she's not to have a room okay? I went to the on the bed I went to the bed to lay down. She comes after me slapping me wants to act like she's slapping me this and that. So she was just doing that? >> Yeah. Like this to me? Like that. Like that? So she takes the phone and comes up with the story of a lifetime in the bathroom okay? I have real problems. Okay. Why don't you hang out out here for me okay? Why don't you hang out out here when I go talk to her so you guys aren't in the same room together okay? Not stopping there the mother went on about her back pain [music] and the times her daughter hit her casting herself as the victim in her own family. She needs to give me my vape. We'll come yep we'll come out. She has slapped me in my face earlier today. Punched me in my back yesterday. Won't you hang over here right in the grass that way you don't have to be on the hard concrete. >> She got kicked out of Booker then we took her to Broward County at her other grandma's. They kicked her out the same problems so we put her to charter school the Imagine Academy. She lasted three days. She was threatening people at the magnet school. Lies. Yes. So I'm here Sure it's very stressful. Yeah. So I'm here doing the virtual program and trying to get that together so she came in talking about when I'm going to register her in school and started bossing me around. This filter doesn't stop. It's the most nasty stuff. They suck my ass. >> Yeah. And and and just everything. I can't control her. She's bigger than me. I can't walk. I have back issues and I went to the chiropractor this morning at 10:00 a.m. And I came home to do all these things I needed through the email, scan documents, her birth certificates, getting everything going. And I wanted to lay down on that bed because it was a hard surface for my spine. Yeah. Yeah. And she didn't like that. She bullying on top of me, bullying, bullying. Bullying. >> Listen. Let's hang out here. Try to catch your breath a little bit. >> She's on medicine. They saying that I'm on medicine. But she was telling people that I take Seroquel at night and I take ADHD medication cuz I'm ADHD and that's all I take in my life. But she's been diagnosed with bipolar, hypertension, borderline. She takes lithium, she takes antidepressants, she takes a mood stabilizer. Yeah. And she makes trazodone, Seroquel. The list goes on. And she has these episodes where it's out the wall and then my mother doesn't help me. Mhm. She takes her side. I got It's like a a control thing. I got you. I'm just Well, here, if your back hurts, we can get in the grass a little bit and it's a little easier on your back. No, sitting is the worst. It's the sciatic nerve. So, sitting is the worst for me. Okay. But she comes in there, swings her hands at me and stuff. She has a scratch on her neck from from my nails scratching her. She's so proud of it. But um I don't know what else I can do. I don't know what else I can do. I know I can do >> is in there. She's going to figure it out, okay? So, just try to try to take a couple deep breaths and relax for a little bit. More of the story was revealed through her own words. I don't understand what's happening. I was laying down. I was watching Netflix. I was only watching Netflix. And if she doesn't get her way, Mhm. it's it it's manipulative, it's attacking, it's threatening, it's it's it's what she does. Ava called I had We had Look. Yes. Yes. Officer, please. Officer, wait. Just it's just She's kind of I don't know what I'm going to do with her. She's such a liar. She's so good about it. I had the vape. I I had a CBD vape because of my back. And she grabs some of my stuff so I can go after her. And she came back and she took my stuff. And she's a good She like locked Okay. Listen, we're talking to her. She's going to talk to you. Just try to relax. I know it's very very stressful. >> in the house. It doesn't matter if it's like a lighter or anything or we can't have any internet devices open, anything. And then my mom is just batchy and has that she marinates in it, she manipulates in it, she likes that. You know, it's just a mind control thing here for the last few years after my dad passed. Trying to Figure everything out. I know it's very stressful. But I have a problem child and I have a mother that thinks that she does no wrong and comes against me, too. Did she get your information yet? We can do that. That No, I was afraid to do anything. I can't have a normal day. I know. Of course, everything has a reason and that reason came out through the mother's own account. No, she just slapped me in the face yesterday. They saw me yesterday. And if I do anything, Okay. why she's they take her to Bayside because when she when she was starting doing it, she was 12, like 12. Uh-huh. So, they would always come out and always like always make a reason for her to go to Bayside instead of doing that. And now it's that she's she's coming up with this idea against me because I don't want her to have that room anymore and she's not to have a room. Because there's there's I I don't smoke cigarettes. My mom does and there's ashes behind my dresser and there's food all in the bed. Okay. And she's not to have a room anymore and that's what this is about. >> going on. Yeah. And she stole my vape. Yeah. And she's 13. It's a lot going on. I'm sure it's very stressful. Well, she's on this She got kicked out of Imagine Academy and she was there for 3 days. So, she was she got kicked out for with the girls and that it When did that happen? Uh 2 weeks ago. So, she got Expelled? Yeah. And I'm trying to go between Pasco County and Sarasota County, trying to work, doing nursing assistant, trying to go back and forth with a problem child, doing this and that. I can't. Obviously, We're just hanging tight here for a second. I'm just going to check with my partner really quick, okay? Inside the house, another officer took the daughter's statement and reported to his superior. The conflict flared as one side claimed to be the victim while the other showed several injuries on her body. Hey, Sarge. I just wanted to let you know that we're going to have a DV over here with children involved, so we're going to go 10-15 on the mom. We have things on the daughter. She lost her mind and started throwing away the daughter's stuff, so the daughter went to pick it up and the mom reached and grabbed it and scratched her neck and then scratched her arm. Uh the little sister saw it all happen. 13 and this is not the first time that this has happened at this house. I would say no because she's got like open bleeding scat like claw marks on her neck. I don't think that's really corporal punishment. So, mom has not been living at this house. They live with the grandma. She's just not the legal guardian. Grandma was here during all of this. She didn't see it, but she heard it and there's a long train of history with the mom just disappearing for weeks and then coming home and beating the girls and then leaving and yeah, I'm not sure if you've ever been to this house. I've been to this house a few times. Of course, the law doesn't accept excuses without proof. The mother was immediately handcuffed, yet still worried, "It will ruin my career." She can't put her hands on me anymore. Okay. Do you mind stepping out of the car? I I'm going to explain everything to you. Just turn around for me. Clean it up. No, no, no. No, no, no. I'm going to tell I'm going to explain everything to you. Please. My daughter has attacked me. To you, okay? Attacked me. Give me 1 second, okay? No. I need to stop on the No, no. She was on top of me on my bed. I'm going to explain I I tried to get her away. Look at my nails, officer. I'm a nurse. This is going to ruin my career. I won't be able to take My daughter has bipolar. I'm not on medication. I'm on two medications. I came from the chiropractor. She attacked me. She attacked me. >> Okay. My mother is bipolar. You're not listening. I Please. So, it's just like up my children. She punched me in my head yesterday and my back. That's why I had to go to the chiropractor this morning. She abused me and attacked me. Are you going to listen to me? I don't know why I'm in handcuffs. Listen. Listen. I'm in handcuffs. Okay. So, right now, the story that your daughter is telling me and the injuries that she has She's a liar. And the fact that your other She attacked her mother. She beat Your other daughter witnessed it all? Other daughter did not witness it. I was laying on the bed. She came on on top of me. She She came in on top of me. I have This is all over me from her. I was in the chiropractor this morning. Okay. But this is so I didn't do this. Do you have a medical marijuana card? That's not THC. That's CBD. That's not That's nicotine. Look at my nails. Um she was on top of me. I went like this. This is very easy. I have marks from her. Please. She beat up my She beat me up. My daughter physically hurt me. >> Okay. Come on. My daughter physically hurt me. I shouldn't be in jail. I shouldn't be in jail. My daughter was beating me up. You keep saying that about every single person. Yes, it is true. It's true. Officer, please. My daughter's been She stole my vape. No. No, officer. Officer, no. This is going to ruin my career. I did not do that. I was protecting myself. I was protecting She I hear you. You know that. I hear you. I hear you. This is I was protecting myself. I was laying on the bed. I just had heart attack. Do you have anything on you that's going to poke me or Please, you're not listening. Even in panic, the mother tried to justify herself. "I was defending myself from my daughter." You know that we have enough probable cause I was just No, I was defending myself. I was defending myself. I was defending myself from my daughter. She beats up on my mother every day. She beat me up yesterday at Pasco. I have a goose egg on my head. You're not She's a liar. happen there, okay? Please, you're not believing me. I know, but you're not believing me. Please believe understand that, but let's just get in the car. Get in the car. I don't beat up my children. >> please. I don't I was laying I might My my head You see my daughter. How can I attack her? I was laying on the bed and she came swinging at my face. You got to use support and >> Because of the Because of the remote control. I hear I hear your story, okay? But I didn't my head. My head. Come on. I just got out of I know. I know. I attacked my daughter. I was defending But So, she I went like this, like this at her neck cuz she was on top of me. Look at my nails. Scoot in there. They're short. She's got soft skin. I don't It was a It was a defense mechanism. It was defending my She She was on top of me about the remote controls she's been stealing. She got kicked out of school. She's been abusing her. Okay. This is This is my fight. My baby. My daughter didn't Even on the way back to the station, she kept insisting her daughter was at fault. Listen. Listen. Listen. >> You don't believe me. Listen. Listen. Listen. >> You know this is wrong. Listen. Listen. I'm a nurse. I know. I need you I need you to take a deep breath and listen, okay? Just take a deep breath and listen, okay? You're getting charged with this. You're not getting convicted with it, okay? The state attorney will decide the conviction, okay? From what she saw, she has probable cause. When it comes to domestic situations, we have to do something, okay? I have probable cause. Look what she did to me. She scratched me to death. LOOK AT MY LEGS. No one is listening to me. No one is listening. Check my legs. I have the same So, when can I get bailed out? So, the booking process takes about an hour, and then you'll be able to bond out as soon as you get that. And it's a misdemeanor charge, so it's $50. If you go through a bail bond, it'll be $10 to get it out. Okay. But, you will not be able to bond out. >> I don't beat up on my kids. Look, I've tried to explain this to you, but you don't stop talking. >> If you were her age, and if you did the things you did to your mom, your probably your mom would beat the [ __ ] out of you, probably. I don't even spank her. And what you're doing is wrong. I I thought you guys were going to help me. Okay. I thought you guys were going to help me. I'm shocked that this is happening to me. Why is this happening to me? This is going to show up on my record. It doesn't even matter if I get charged or not. It's always going to show up that I was arrested for battery. And I'll never get a nursing job ever again. I won't do it after this. I will never be able to work with the elderly, with nobody. Based on the evidence, the mother was arrested on a child abuse charge. Under Florida law, if convicted, she could face up to 5 years in prison or probation, along with a fine of up to $5,000. Hopefully, after this incident, the mother will come to a full realization and find a balance between rest and her nursing career, instead of relieving [music] stress through violence against her child. But, the pain didn't end there. Shortly after, more children in Florida had to endure bruises left by their own relatives. Do any of your children have any reason to feel unsafe in your home? >> Hell, no. On September 13th, 2024, police received a report from a school about several children showing visible bruises and scratches, [music] revealing signs of domestic violence. Following the lead, they raided a house where two parents greeted them, but immediately denied all accusations. Hey, how you doing, sir? I'm all right. Sir, Deputy Warren, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Do you mind if we go inside and talk to you guys real quick? What happened? Are you mom? Yes, I am. Um, I have to talk to you guys separately. We don't have to. Okay. I guess you're going first. Why would they have to talk to us separately? Yeah. That's how we operate. Just to make sure We We got a family together, like so we talk together. Okay, that's not how the protocol is. >> Well, it's going to be like that today, or you just ain't going to get to talk to nobody. Simple as that. What's going on? There was a report that came in that I need to speak to you guys separately about it. Well, you can't speak to us separately. We are family. I understand. I'm father, that's mother. What kind of report? He got a ring. He got a ring. So, they have We're not trying to separate the family. It was just to get the information. it's not going to be separate. We are family. You can talk to us together and nothing at all. Just as an example, right? You're driving down the road, you get hit by a car, the car flees. You may see it as a silver car, she may see it as a white car. Everybody has their own perception of what occurred. So, we need to talk to everybody separately cuz when you start talking about it and she hears you, that's going to influence what she may or she may say something that influences what you may remember. Not saying that anybody's making something up or lying, but everybody has their own perception. That's the reason why I want to talk to you separately. That's all it is. You can talk with the officers here and I can talk to her here. You don't have to can't be. Why we need the officers, though? It's just by law when DCF comes out, we bring the officers. Why we wasn't notified? You're being notified now. We're notifying you. When the abuse started? The report came in today. About what? That's what we want to talk to you about separately. We know it's So, what kind of Sir, we're not doing this. Yeah, JUST LET LET THEM TALK to me. She said I'm not doing anything. She just said it was protocol that they come Okay, let Let him talk Let Let her talk to me. After many efforts to persuade them, both parents finally [music] agreed to separate interviews to clarify the truth. We have his story right now. We're trying to get your side. Six kids got one in college. Right? And we have one going to the military. Obviously, they are the oldest. They wouldn't have been getting abused. Where's the abuse claim coming from? Nobody is here to accuse you of anything, right? We have to do our job. The You guys are doing a great job. Y'all sitting back and y'all letting her talk, and that's great. You had her company her. Okay, I'm telling y'all that. We're not talking about our kids separate. It ain't going to happen. Okay, so We got to go to court. We got to do something like that. We got to do it another kind of way. Listen, I need to find I need to find out what's going on. >> Let her sit here and I First of all, I'm going to educate the both of you. In this situation, she's actually here to support us, okay? So, we're here for the allegations. That falls under Florida state statute. What's the Florida state statute or Florida state rule? When separating when interviewing people in regards to a criminal case, we are to interview separately. If you do not let us do that, that falls under obstruction. No, no, no. Cuz my mom is not getting taken. They They can't be taken. Okay. My kids not getting molested. Would you like to allegation? Can you speak to to the deputy and this lady by yourself? Allegations of what? And we will explain that to you when you separate. No, let her Let her explain it to me. Let her explain it to me. Police started with the mother, who tried [music] to appear innocent. How does your husband discipline? How he talking to you now? He got to He got to He got to He I don't want I know you're you're safe. I don't want to situate any further. I don't discipline my kids. How does your husband discipline? He talk to them. He put them in time out. >> Okay. Suppose I tell you all three kids said the same thing. What did they say? Somebody getting whooped with a broom. Oh, wow. Do any of your children have any reason to feel unsafe in your home? >> Hell, no. >> But, I told you the child said those words. What? And they love the How they love me? They did say they love you. I'm just saying, we have three consistent stories that have never The kids didn't even wink an eye to say what they said. And we have a child that said you're unsafe in your house. My kids Oh. They got Sorry. No, they said their brother got hit by the broom. They told us that they That's the form of discipline. Nobody said any little track marks were taken. Nobody said they got brown. They said they get hit. Wow. >> And they said it's not the first time that it's happened. >> first time. With the broom. What? Sometime mommy pick a switch. On the back. Y'all [ __ ] I Like I told you. I told you I I frame them. But, it don't mean I hit them. The father was no better, denying all accusations and insisting his way of raising the children was completely safe. All right. I know this is uncomfortable, but I'm going to cut to the chase. So, the abuse report came in where your children said they were hit by a broom. How does he discipline? Yeah, how does he discipline the kids? Normally. What's normal to you? Normal to me and normal to the kids. I mean, normal, I mean, it's it's you know normal. It's normal. It's normal. Upbringing is different. One person's perception could be like, "Oh, that's time out. That's too much." Or they're yelling at them, "That's too much." Or define your normal. Normal is I yell, yelling, you know, I mean, sit downs and work. Normal. It's no beating with brooms, like what Um, do you slap your kids? No. You never hit your kids? No. Not like not not slaps. Straight on the back then. Do you use a belt? Do you use anything to hit your kids with, a broom? No. Slap on the wrist. No. Is there any reason why any of your kids would say that you slap them? I don't know. We have two The children they obviously they They are pretty mean. Sorry. They kind of If you talk to them, you barely can understand. I don't know if you talk to I have spoken with them and I wasn't able to understand. I have a very shy one and one that's very articulate. But, you can understand everything. I was able to understand. Okay, so the allegations came in where your son reported that he was hit by a broom by you. What? Are we aware of any marks on that was left that could have been by an accident? What did you say? I don't know. On the picture. Even when police showed him the evidence, he not only refused to admit any wrongdoing, but also blamed the children instead. They made the report to somebody at school, and they're they're mandated reporters, so they have to um let us know what's happening. So And the bruise wraps around the back of his ankle. Right. It's purple and all red. So, it wrapped around. That That could have been a broom or could have been a belt. I mean, and I'm just saying that. I'm not saying that's what happened. I'm just telling you We're saying that We're asking you how you discipline your kids. You're spanking with the broom. How does he spank him with the broom?
