On August 6th, 2022, West Palm Beach police received an emergency call reporting a young child founded in a parking lot. Officers quickly arrived, calming the child, taking witness statements, and knocking on doors of nearby apartments to find his parents. >> I found a little boy roam in the parking lot, screaming hello like five times. Who would think somebody come outside and look for him? I'm not sure if he walked for father cuz nobody coming out looking for him. And I seen him running over there. So, I was like, okay, maybe he running towards his mama or somebody. Uh, how long have you known that he was like out here? Like is it right around the time you called? >> About 15 minutes. And I keep screaming like, "Hello, somebody lost their child or something." Nobody won't like respond. Me and this lady, we um lived out here for a while. Never saw him. >> What's up, man? What's your name? Okay. Listen, I'm going to put this badge on you. Okay. I'm going make you a police officer right now. Okay. You got to help me out. We got to find your mommy. Can we walk and find out where your mom is at? Okay. Yeah, we'll walk around for a little bit. >> Just walk around. Call. >> No. Mommy. >> Over the moon. >> Yeah. We'll walk around and we'll start knocking on doors. And >> what direction did you see him come from? When I was over there, he came from See that running across? So I said maybe he >> Oh, like on the other side. >> Yeah. I'm going to start at 78. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> All right. All right. Let's go walk and knock. You thirsty? >> Where you think your mom's at? >> My mommy's o over the teacher. >> She's a teacher? >> Yeah, she's a teacher. Look, that's a playground. Yeah, >> I played around with somebody. >> I I I went to the playground. >> You went to the playground? >> To the playground. But where which way did you come from? >> 26. >> Um, mommy's over there on the moon. >> You keep saying mommy's over here on the moon. >> I went to the stairs. >> Did you stairs? >> Did you come down to go to the playground? >> Yeah, I want to go to a very round and the slide. Blue slide. >> Who are you at home with? Mommy up. Is mommy in the house? >> Over that corner. Mommy's over the lake. >> She's over the lake. No, it is not over the lake. But look, that's a water. >> Yeah, >> a waterfall. >> Where do you go to sleep at at night? Where's your room at? >> Uh, I I go to bed. >> Where's your bed at? >> I I went to West Palm Beach. >> We're in West Palm. >> I went to the playground here. >> No, not yet. I start knocking on the door. >> Hey, how you doing? You all didn't lose the kid, did you? >> Okay. Have you ever seen this little guy running around? Okay. All right. >> How you doing? Um, do you have a child? How you doing? Are you missing a child? A little child? >> A little boy. No. All right. Sir, >> they all answered upstairs. >> Yeah, nobody recognize me. >> I I checked all. >> So, I'm going to start over here. >> After many attempts, they reached the mother by phone. However, initial communication with authorities was challenging. >> Palm Beach Police Department. Um, do you know where your son is? >> Um, he's with his dad. We believe that we have your son here and he's he was outside by himself. Can you give me dad's info so that we can get him to his parent? I'm going to try to send you a picture of this little boy and can you tell me if this is your son or not? He's about 3 years old saying his first name is Liam. >> Yeah, that's his last name. >> Well, we don't know if he didn't tell us his last name. We found like basically your son's name in a database in our records database. I'm going to let you speak to this child to see if if you recognize the voice. >> Okay. Is he in the back? I possibly could possibly have mom on the phone. So, I'm going to let her speak to him. Can you talk to Is this mommy? >> Is that mommy? >> Mommy. >> Hi, my baby. >> What's wrong? >> He's not speaking. So, does that sound like your son, ma'am? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, can you provide me with the phone number so that we can get dad and have him come so he can have a child? >> I don't have um his phone number. >> Okay. How do you all communicate? >> We just communicate. >> Okay. How? >> Who is she stay with over here? >> She's saying the father doesn't live here. So, are you in the city of West Palm Beach right now? Can you come get your child? >> Sure. >> Okay. >> Um, where are you at? >> When's the last time you had the child, ma'am? >> Today. >> Okay. And you gave him to the father at what time? >> 7 >> around 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. >> p.m. >> Have you left your your hotel or are you still there? >> No, I'm I'm still here. >> Okay. >> I've only been here for a couple of hours. >> Okay. When meeting in person, the conversation between police and the mother revealed details suggesting the difficulties she was experiencing. >> Hi, >> how you doing? We called about your your child. Your child that's missing. >> Did you know that he was missing? >> No. >> He's supposed to be with his dad. >> Do you know where we found him? >> Well, they said no. >> Okay. Where is your room? >> Okay. Who is in there with you? But nobody's in there. >> You're here with who? >> Well, it's me and my son, but we >> You just said that you and your son were >> Yeah, we came here and he came with his dad. >> You just said the room is for you and your son, but then you dropped your son off to the father. >> Where did you drop the >> You dropped him off here. >> Okay. Where is your Where is Andy at now? >> I don't know. If you don't mind me asking, how did you communicate with dad to facilitate that meeting today? >> Let me get a Miranda car. Sorry. Do you have any other kids? >> Yeah. >> Where are they? >> I have another son, but he's with my uncle. >> Where do you actually live? >> I live on my >> Why do you have a room right down the street? >> Just to get away. >> To get away from what? >> Just to get away and just relax. >> He's just going to ask you some more questions. But before we turn the child back over to you, we're going to have to make sure everything is good here with we're going to have to check your room. We're gonna have to check your car and everything. >> Even as the police began explaining the Miranda rights, the mother still appeared confused when speaking about her responsibility to care for her child. >> All right. So, first, um I'm going to read this. This is a Miranda warnings. Okay. I'm required to warn you before you make any statements that you have the following constitutional rights. You have the right to remain silent and not answer any questions. Do you understand? Any statement can and may be used against you in a court of law. Do you understand? >> Yes. >> Okay. If at any time during the interview you do not wish to answer any questions, you are privileged to remain silent. Do you understand? >> All right. Do you understand? I'm asking you these questions and I'm I've been on the phone with you. It was me that you were speaking to. I've been on the phone with you because I'm trying to assess cuz as of right now, I'm concerned for the well-being of the child. Let's start from the beginning. Everything all the way up to uh now. So, you woke up at 7:00 a.m. And where where did you wake up? Where where did you sleep last night? It >> was at another So, are you currently just living from hotel to hotel right now? >> I just been like um just trying to get away. >> Okay, understandable. Who do you currently live with? >> My uncle. >> Your uncle. Um where where is that? >> Um I'm not sure because he was >> I can't hear you, man. >> I'm not sure. >> You're not sure what >> where he is. >> No, no, no. Where were you staying today? You said this morning you woke up at your uncle's residence. >> No, I didn't wake up there. >> Well, you said at another hotel. My apologies. But you currently live with your uncle. >> Yeah. >> Where? >> What happened to your dad? >> This is all so that I can understand and so that we can know if this happens again where we can come and find you so that we can give you the child. >> It won't happen again. >> Sure. >> I just don't feel comfortable. You say I don't have the answer. >> But this is the thing, man. Nothing is really making sense right now. Basically, your explanation of how things happen. We understand things happen. Okay. However, when somebody is being very evasive, when we're trying to help them, it looks bad. Very bad. Especially when it invol involves a child. So, I'm just trying to basically get your side so that I can understand why it is we got involved today and why it is that, you know, Liam is outside by himself. Doesn't know where he is. Okay. He's supposed to be with his dad. Is there like a court order or anything like that? No. >> Okay. How do you all often communicate? >> By phone. Yeah. >> Okay. Okay. >> Meanwhile, information about the boy's father remained unknown. >> I don't understand why you're uneasy right now. I'm giving you the opportunity. I'm just trying to listen it. I can understand if you were in handcuffs or something. Then like, yeah, of course. It's a reason to be uncomfortable. You're in handcuffs. But that's not the case. I just need your side of the story so that I can document in my report that's going to go to DCF why this unfortunate event happened. Just please explain. >> I can't hear you. I'm sorry. his dad. >> Okay, tell me about that. How is he supposed to be with his dad? So, you called him today. Did he call you? >> What is something like that? Explain it. Did he call you or did you call him? >> It wasn't really like just not really text. It's kind of like text. I don't know. >> I don't understand. It was kind of text message, but it wasn't text message. >> Something like that. >> So, what is it? Huh? >> Your phone. It's on, right? >> Yeah, >> cuz I called you. >> So, I know you can accept calls and you can you can call. Okay. So, is that what happened today with the father or what? Or did he call you or did he text you? >> It was like um something like that, but it was like it was something like that. >> Okay. So, it was more so through people. Okay. What people? Godly people. >> What? >> Godly people. >> More so through godly people. Who are some godly people? >> People >> like me. Did you speak directly to the father today? >> Someone. >> Someone. It's a yes or no. Did you see the father today? Did you see him today? Did you hand the child over to him today? What's kind of Can I have his phone number so that I can call him? When's the last time you spoke to him? >> I deleted it. >> You deleted it? Can you show me your car logged in? >> Do I have to show you? >> You don't have to. I'm just asking. >> The police had to take the necessary steps. From there, details about the family gradually came to light. >> Step out. I want to talk to you. >> Thank you. Let's put this up. >> Put your hands behind your back. You're under arrest. Okay. Put your hands together like a prank. >> Under arrest. Okay. >> Why? >> Have you ever heard of child? >> Yeah, but um I didn't my child. Do you know what that means? Can you explain what child is? >> You don't take care of your kids. >> All right, walk with me. Keep walking. See the 911. Stand right in front of the 911. >> Where is his his father? His father is Andy. Is that right? Or is it Herbert? >> Well, um, >> what what what >> Herbert is his biological father. >> What What do you think we meant by father when we asked you that question before? >> Who's in Connecticut? >> Like who's who's there? Who's around him? >> Who is his father? It's not a trick question unless you don't know >> his um >> who who is his biological >> his biological >> chromosome father >> he is where >> he's in another state. >> Okay. So who were you supposed to that you told us you dropped your child off to? You said Andy. Is Andy a boyfriend? >> Well, he's your husband. >> Where's his number in here? >> Oh my. >> You deleted your husband's phone number? >> Well, you surely must know it by heart. She said they spoke on the phone today, so it should be on the call up. >> Which one is his number? >> I deleted it. >> You deleted Andy, who is not the biological father, but he's who? Somebody that you were supposed to drop your son off to. This guy doesn't exist. According to us, this guy doesn't exist. You know his full name. >> Or did you delete that, too? >> No, I know. >> What's his full name? >> Where does he live? >> I'm not sure. >> You don't know his You don't know anything about him? >> Um, >> can you look up what she's talking about? Maybe. Thank you. >> Have a seat, ma'am. >> Okay. Check it. >> Okay. >> A little later, her relatives arrived to pick up the boy, unable to hide their surprise at her evasive statements. Police also spoke with them about legal procedures and informed them that DCF would be involved. >> Are you Laurel? >> Yes, sir. >> How you doing? Sergeant Gats, West Palm Beach Police Department. >> Okay. The baby's okay though. >> We have the baby. >> Okay. >> So, we get a call in this complex right over here. Okay. >> Um I don't know if you're really familiar with this area. >> Florida. I moved Florida like 2 years ago because of her. She's been going through last year, I think, West Palm Beach. I put her in the hospital. She's been staying with me ever since UCF, but she's been having this stuff in her head from the other day. >> How long ago is this? >> Last week, my birthday. >> So, I told her that this is a very statement statement that could get somebody in trouble. So, she >> Did she report this to DC? >> I'm not sure. That's her son right there. Older son, >> 15y old. >> Yeah. >> She just left cuz she's been staying with me still. Said she's going to go to a hotel. I said, "You don't need to go to a hotel. You need to go get yourself a job and get you in place. And she has she hasn't been home for for the last 4 days. >> She put him out. Oh, just stay over here around the corner. That's what she told him. >> Heeded into that complex. There's a canal. You could see the busy road. You know, anybody could have scooped him up. But he was walking. Somebody found him and said, "Hey, this this three-year-old's walking by himself." So, we've been knocking on doors for hours over here. She's giving us weird statements about how her I dropped him off to his his his father, Andy. And I'm like, Andy? >> Then she finally comes clean. She's like, "Yeah, Herbert's in Connecticut or whatever." We're like, "Who's Andy?" And she doesn't have his phone number. She can't tell us where he lives. Is that true? >> She She lives with me. >> How you doing? >> So, you're a sister? >> Yeah. >> Where is he? >> He actually got taken to McDonald's by the other officer cuz he was hungry. He's coming back. >> Oh my god. >> He's coming back. She's being arrested tonight for child. Okay. Basically, the kid was wondering for hours right over here. >> Hours? >> Yeah. And she's incoherent with We don't know what's going on. She's telling us a lie. Some lies. But um if if you're willing to take the child? >> Yeah. >> Do we know who Andy is? >> That's who she was saying the father or something was. Something like that. >> Father. >> She said the father name is Andy. >> Yes. >> What the hell? >> Yeah. She just gave us a different name. >> They're just checking your history now. Um, we just have to do it just before we release them to you. But DCF will make contact with you all within 4 hours. So, you'll probably see us again because we'll have to go with them for the intake. Took him to McDonald's, got him something to eat. He doesn't have any like complainting pain or anything like that. She's ready to lay down. >> Okay. >> Okay. Thank you. Thank you very much. >> The mother faced with a charge of child. Under Florida law, if convicted, she could face up to 5 years in prison or probation along with a fine of up to $5,000. This incident highlights the importance of parental responsibility, clear communication among all parties involved, and the essential role of law enforcement in protecting children. The story in West Palm Beach came to a close, but in another part of Florida, a new emergency call arose. This time involving a mother behind the wheel while not in a safe condition. On May 1st, 2025, police received a report of a woman driving in a manner that appeared unsafe while two children were in the vehicle. Shortly after, her car had a tire blowout, allowing officers to approach and speak directly with the mother. >> Hello. >> Hi, Mom. Alexis, >> I'm sorry. >> You okay? What's your name? >> No, my daughter is tired and throwing a fit. So, we pulled over that way we can't have fit and we're going to go home. >> What happened with your tires? >> What's ours? the car tires. >> We're leaving. He's done having her fit. That's why you're going to close my hand on the door, man. >> Step away. >> Your car is not safe to drive one because you don't have tires. >> I do have tires. >> Would you like to see it? >> Oh my god. Buckle up. Let's go home. >> Would you like to see it? >> Uncle. >> Hello. >> Let go of my car. >> Step out of the car. >> No. >> Step out of the car. You're going to be in handcuff. >> I pulled over cuz my daughter was >> I understand that. But now I need your driver license. >> I will give it to you. >> I'm still waiting. >> I know. We're just trying to go to the mall. We want to go to the mall. We want the jumpy date. >> You don't have tires. You want me to show you? >> I'm sorry. I can't car tires. >> It's flat. You can't drive it. You don't have flat tires. >> Okay. Mom, my husband. >> Okay. Let me see your driver license, please. And then I'm going to go home. >> I have rights. Actually, I'm calling cancer program. I'm calling my lawyer. >> One more. >> Authorities interveneed to ensure safety when the situation could not be resolved on the spot. >> Ma'am, >> my kid my kids are in the car. >> You're going to be detained for now. Okay. >> No. >> Relax. You will be arrested. We're not being detained. My kids are fine. >> I know. I understand that. >> Okay. >> I pulled over. >> Okay. I know. >> So that they can stop busting. >> Relax. >> No, my kids. >> Come over here. They They're fine. They're fine. What's your name? What's your first and last name? >> We live right about your car that you almost hit somebody. >> Oh my god. Somebody. So you're driving in a way that's not very safe. >> Dash to my kids cuz they're >> Are you under any any medications or so? I need to make sure cuz you're not you don't seem all right to me. >> No, I am not. >> Have you have anything to >> I don't think. >> Are you taking any drugs? >> No. >> What kind of do you think I am? >> I don't know. I'm just asking the way you are asking the way you acting right now. >> My kids have been scream and I have a 2-year-old. >> You don't even realize that you're driving with a flat tire. >> My husband will come and fix it. Listen. >> Are you bringing prescription medications? >> No. >> I have a 2-year-old and a six-year-old and they're scing their heads off. So I pulled over so I can give them their their >> Is there a reason you're giving me a hard time when I ask you for just your name and your driver license just to figure out who you are? >> Because I have to give my kids snacks because they're screaming and crying >> once I figured out how everything is going and then you I you be on your way. I live right here in Poka. I have to go I I know we're in boy. I know I'm going to take Congress. I'm going to go home to boy. Is this driveable to you? >> So, let's call him and have him come. >> How would he get here? >> Okay. >> His dad will take him. >> Come over here. >> Oh my god. I want to get home to my kids. >> Your kids in the car. Well, now you can't drive this car and you need to go. I'm going to have you to call your husband to come get your kids, right? >> And I'm going with him. >> Okay. Where's your license in your car? >> I get it. >> Sit right here. I got it. Did you hit the curb? >> No. >> So, how did you What happened with your tires? Who told you that? >> He says, she said. >> I just show you it to you. >> I have a flat tire. Maybe there's a Maybe there is a screw in the tire. >> Maybe your rims are like screw or something. >> There's a screw, >> right? >> Check my tire, but there's a screw. >> Why you Why Why would you think there's a screw in the tire? >> Because there was before and we had to keep plugging it. >> We're driving with your defective tires. Then >> it's not defective when you plug it. Do you know anything about me? My husband's mechanic. >> Okay, good for you. So, I'm going to ask you some simple questions because I got to make sure that you're okay to go home. Okay. >> Can just put my hair in my face. >> What am I supposed to do now? >> Nothing. Don't worry about it. >> Do you know where you are? >> I'm in Bo Beach and I'm trying to get back to Boone. And we wanted to go to Bo Beach Mall to so that my daughter can do a jumpy that's $8 that we like. So, we were on our way there and then she said she had to go potty. I said, "Okay, let me see if I can stop and do that." But >> if you don't mind me asking, are you diagnosed with anything? >> No. No, you just your normal self right now. >> Yeah. >> You can't drive your car. You have to call somebody. You can tell them either fix your car for you and take your kids home. You're going to have to call your husband. >> Okay. I can drive my car. >> You can't see the change the tires. I'm not letting you drive your car the way it is with >> I will drive it to my >> I'm not letting those kids in the car the way your car is right now. >> Meanwhile, the officers approached to reassure the two children who were in the car at that time. >> Is your daddy home? >> No, he just walked from work. >> He just walked from work. Also my mommy. Also my mommy. >> Yeah. I'm just making sure her license is good. >> Also my mom. >> Nothing's wrong with her. We're just talking to her to make sure she's okay. >> She's been driving a long time for us to get to her mall. >> Where you guys going? The mall. >> Yeah. The mall. >> Which mall? >> Like the bouncy. >> The bouncy house. >> Yeah. Not the bouncy house. The boy mall. >> Boon mall. >> I got this. >> Spaghettiio. >> Yeah. I had this on my door. >> You like spaghettiio? >> I wrote this on my Can you girls do me a favor though? Can you just stay in the back there and don't come up front? I just want you guys to stay in your seats over there so you guys stay snug. Okay. Mommy will be leaving there in a little bit. You say your dad is home? >> Yeah. >> Do you know his phone number? >> I only know his home when we're on his tablet. His little tablet. >> We may have your dad come uh pick you guys up and I think your mom may be too tired to drive. >> Contact with the children's father was also made quickly and smoothly. >> Hi, >> this is Officer Boy and Beach Police Department. How are you? >> Okay. I heard that. How are you doing? >> I'm good. Um, are you dad or are you Shane's boyfriend? >> Both. >> Okay. >> Are you okay to drive? >> No. >> No. >> All right. All right. We'll call somebody else. >> The witness who made the call also arrived, giving police a detailed account of what he had seen. >> How you doing? What's your name, sir? >> Huh? My heart is I'm sorry. >> No, it's okay. What's going on? >> The kids. Man, >> it's a good thing you called because everything that I'm seeing right now. >> I think she's >> That's what I'm I'm want to make sure I get what what exactly did you see? >> So, I was just coming from my office right off of uh Congress. I got past Will. Then I saw a lot of smoking, you know, coming. I'm like driving coming out from the light and then I see like smoke and then I see a couple right with two kids and they were the kids away. I'm like, what just happened? Then all the smoke coming from the right side. I'm like, did maybe just go over curb like accidentally, you know, something happened. So then I started paying attention to it and then she if you go back, you're going to see that it's all scrap almost like any cars or anything like that. >> No, not any cars. She almost ran over the this couple with the family. She made a right and then she was like going over the the curb and then on and off and then I think she got a flat tire. I believe she made a right turn right here at the gas station, right? And then she almost actually for another guy that was just walking. She literally >> I mean I thought she was going to hit me and I went over this guy. So, she made that turn and I'm on the phone ready with 911. And then that's when she made this right turn right here and literally just went over the grass and then I thought there was somebody trying to ditch the car. So, I made a U-turn, came back and it seemed like she was lost like trying to find something inside the car. That's when I say, "Look, it's a female." >> So, you were behind her car from Woolbrite all the way. >> Oh, yeah. About about half a mile. I'm telling you, if you go back WBrite and come back north, I'm telling you, the curb you're going to see no like five times easily. She was literally going over it on the sidewalk. She went over the sidewalk and this family, two kids, the guy pulled the wife and the two kids cuz you know he >> Yeah, this guy I mean she barely missed him either or there was something going on but then I saw the kids. >> Did you talk to her at all? >> Oh no, no, no. I just went past it and I cuz I didn't know who he was then. Maybe somebody trying to ditch the car. So I just I parked right there. Just stayed there just watching from afar. >> Okay. Let me just get your name real quick if you don't mind. >> Oh no, not at all man. >> Name, phone number and address. and then >> yeah, we'll take care of it. >> As for the mother, she initially seemed unsure about her condition. Authorities conducted a routine safety check to ensure both her well-being and the safety of the children. >> Is that dad? >> No, it's you can tell him to come here to >> Oh, I thought I was going to take him to the station cuz he doesn't know. >> Okay. >> All right. >> Okay, ma'am. Again, like I said, you were I was detaining you right now. You're being detained because when I try to speak to you and ask you for a driver license, you refuse. You almost closed the door. >> My hair my face. I'm sorry. >> Sure. And close the door on my hand. That's why you're being detained. Okay. >> I'm sorry. I'm not. I gave me That's beside the point. >> That's beside the point. Right now, I'm conducting a DUI investigation based on everything that I have that believe that you're under. So, let's do it. >> I'm not I didn't say that you were drinking. I just asked you if you had anything to drink, which I'm not smelling anything. But I believe that you were under the prescription medication. You said you didn't take correct. Okay. >> I did nothing wrong. I'm trying to take my kids out to have a good day. >> You need a license. >> I asked you multiple time earlier. Are you any any medication? denied every single time. You said you did not take anything medication. You're not >> No, I misunderstood. I don't take anything.
