Damn. >> Move back. >> For real. You're racist. >> Oh my goodness. >> No. No. No. >> The law is not cold. It steps in only when safety boundaries are crossed too far. >> Stop. You're under arrest. >> What is wrong with you? >> Stop. >> You cannot. I can give you a with my child. Today's video captures the moment when a lack of cooperation and unhelpful reactions turn a manageable situation into one that can no longer be resolved easily. >> There's a child right >> this story begins with family responsibility and ends with legal accountability. On December 7th, 2022, police received a call from a school reporting that a child had been dropped off without an appropriate safety seat. [music] The 69year-old woman, identified as the children's grandmother, acknowledged placing the 4-month-old in the front seat, secured only with an adult seat belt rather than a proper infant restraint. At the scene, officers spoke with the mother, whose reactions added to the rising tension. >> So, here's what we got going on. We were called here due to a concern from a staff member that observed this female right here with the 4-month-old and no car seat or anything like that. >> So obviously that's a concern. So we get here and she acknowledged that no, she does not have a car seat and that she was transporting the child in the front seat with a seat belt on. Still not okay. >> Okay. >> So children services were contacted Mahoney County and Kyhoga County. >> Yeah. I spoke to Miranda. I haven't spoken to Mrs. Oroki yet. >> Okay. I just got off the phone with the supervisor from Mahoney County. They are in route. They're going to be taking custody of the four-month-old and the five and fouryear-old are going to go in custody >> to do all of that and I got car seats for these kids. >> Okay, then I understand that she was sick. The baby is sick. This is my cousin that you're talking about. Do you even understand? Look, I I got a counseling agency. I would my sessions would not be interrupt. So, the thing is the person that normally picks up had the car seats in their car. they had appointment and stuff like that and so they couldn't pick the kids up at the normal time that they needed to be. I called I met with Miss uh Zora this morning when I dropped off Aristotle this morning and I explained to her that my mother was going to have to pick up Aristotle and them. Could you please have them ready cuz she cannot get out the car because she has an infant that she's going to be having to bring with her. you know, um, regardless of a car seat or whatever, she can't lift the car seat and all that and transport the baby like I probably, you know, like I can and stuff like that. So, my mother gets up, gets the baby dressed, tint tail, comes down the street a block, and picks up the kids and wants to go back home so she can tend to an infant and take care of the kids as she normally does every day. She takes care of the kids because they're dropped off to her at my home and she takes care of the kids at the home. Okay. >> Okay. So, the fact that he forgot to leave the car seats so that she could transport the kids is why we are where we are right now. >> That's still not It's not a good enough. >> Both cars have car seats for the kids. >> Okay. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? That's That's still not That's still not an excuse. >> Shouldn't be reached to bring them back. >> Well, then then she shouldn't she shouldn't have left the house. She shouldn't have left the house with a newborn child. >> Let me tell you something. Then they would have said something about the kids being >> I would rather I would rather have a phone call saying a child wasn't picked up from school rather than having a four-month old being transported in a motor vehicle without a car seat. >> Well, I'm about to call Miranda. >> You go ahead. I just got off the phone with Miranda and Miranda strictly told me to not let you take custody of any of these children and that you were supposed to go home and go get formula and a change of clothes. >> Is that is that accurate? >> No, that's not what Miranda told me. Well, I just spoke to the supervisor on the phone and she said that they spoke to you. >> Okay. Well, that's what we're doing today. >> What is wrong? What is your problem? >> I don't have a problem. >> Officer Young, whatever your name is, >> Officer Young. The the the issue is what we have going on. >> It's horrible. It is horrible. Mom is not like she's not she's a grandmother. She takes care of kids all day, every day. I'm pretty sure she did what she thought was securing the baby at that time. >> Not okay. to the other >> like you are just reckless. >> No, no, this is reckless. Driving with a newborn inside a car is reckless without a car seat. That is reckless. >> That's okay. That's not okay. >> That is a mess. I don't understand this man. >> No understand how dangerous that is. >> I do. >> Okay. So then it's not then you would understand it's reckless. >> And get me understand that. But what I'm telling you is that it's not nothing where she purposely just was trying to She >> She's trying to be helpful. >> Helpful in the wrong way. >> No. Like this. You taking this baby and his only family. >> No, I'm making sure this kid is taken care of. >> WE'RE HIS ONLY FAMILY. SO, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? You're taking CARE OF HIM. YOU'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE CARE of him like I take care of him. I'm his cousin. How do you know his cousin and >> I have a six-month-old at home. Trust me, I know this is reckless. This is Okay, you don't need You don't need to raise your voice. No, I'm not horrible. >> I do need to understand I do understand because I'm a father. I do understand. >> That don't make you a good person. >> Yeah, I'm 70 years old. I know >> you're 69. >> Your wisdom. >> Well, won't give me six 70. >> Well, the the the newborn's going to be going in custody of Mahoney County Children Services. >> Let them do what they got to do. >> The situation gradually became more complicated as the mother did not fully cooperate and declined to follow officer's guidance. Ma'am, you are not going to be living with that child. Ma'am, you are not going to be with that child. Go on the other side. >> In my car. You're not. That's what I can do. No, >> he will not come in my car and I did not give you permission. >> You don't have to give me permission. You're obstructing. You're going to go to jail. >> You're going to get arrested for obstruction. >> He needs arrest in his car seat. Back up. >> Oh, now you want to put him in a car seat. >> Well, why don't you just wait till that service car seat, sir? >> Excuse me. >> You're going to be placed under arrest. >> Why are you arresting my mother? Child in danger. >> What did I do? >> Child in danger. You're under arrest for child endangering. Go ahead and put your hand. >> Go ahead and put your hands behind your back. >> Stop that. Don't pepper her. She is >> Move away. Move away. Move away. She is sick. Move away. Make a matter of but you're sick. I know. Ma'am, you're on the verge of getting some racist. Move back. >> For real. You're racist. Uhuh. Get your hands off me. You're going to go. >> I touched you. Back the hell up. For real. >> You don't even have this car seat in the right way. They got to do. >> You ain't give me a chance to strap again. You're messing up. >> THERE'S A CHILD RIGHT HERE. >> STOP. >> YOU DON'T HOLLER AT ME. >> Let go. There's a child right here. You're going to GO TO JAIL. >> YOU'RE GOING TO GO TO JAIL. >> I DON'T GET with you. >> GET BACK. >> GET BACK. NOT >> Don't do that. >> I know you're not. You are a racist. Leave me alone. >> You >> get away from me. You're not You're not coming inside this school. You're going to go to jail. This response moved the encounter beyond its initial scope, leading officers to take both adults into custody. >> You're going to go to jail. You're going to go to jail. Go. >> I will get you out. >> I'm making fun of >> You are not coming inside this school. >> I'm not coming in the school. Don't worry about it. And why are you taking him in there? >> For the safety of the child. >> You're what it needs to be guarded from. For real. This is ridiculous. I don't understand this. >> I don't understand you and your parenting cuz apparently you need to learn about it. Place your hands behind your back. You're under arrest. >> What is she doing? >> You're under arrest. You're under arrest. >> I'm not doing nothing. >> You're under arrest. >> What is wrong with you? >> Stop. What is wrong with you arresting me for >> obstructing? I am Stop resisting. You're going to go [laughter] You're going to go down to the ground from me. >> You're going to go down to the ground. >> Oh my god. What's wrong with you? Stop. >> Put your hand behind your back. >> Oh my god. Stop it. YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THAT. >> STOP. >> WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? >> YOU'RE GOING TO JAIL. >> I'M ABOUT TO uh >> You're going to jail for obstructing. Stop. >> You are going to get sued. Now you're getting charged with resistance. >> You are going to get sued. >> Now you're going to jail for resisting. >> For real. This is crazy. >> Stop. >> I DEAL WITH KIDS EVERY DAY. AND YOU'REING CRAZY. >> STOP. You're going to jail. >> Oh my god. Oh, you wait till I see a judge. This is crazy. You should not have a bag. Wait a minute. Here. Put my phone in the car. >> Stop. I will. >> My things are slipping. >> Here. I got your phone. >> Here. >> 107 lock 247s. >> Here. Take this thing. >> Place under arrest for obstructing and resisting arrest. >> You're a liar. You are a liar. If you ain't If I ain't never seen one. I ain't been ever in jail like this. Is crazy. Because I placed the baby in a car SEAT IN A CAR. >> Try getting in the way of when we were making an arrest. >> No, I didn't. >> And you're not listening when I get in the way. I asked you. Why are you arresting my mother? >> You don't listen. >> Most heartbreaking of all, the children, too young to understand what was happening, were temporarily separated from their family and placed under official supervision. >> Hello. Hi. Are you with children services? >> Ohio mentor. I work in conjunction with county children service. >> Very good. children are inside. >> Oh, okay. Uh, you know what? Let me I guess put this back in the car, then. >> Yeah, that's fine. You're going to be taking custody of the two the two children. >> Oh, okay. That's what you guys want as far as >> Well, you're injunction with Kyhoga County for the two children? >> Kyhoga County. I'm just trying to see exactly what's going on. >> Um, well, grandma's under arrest and mom's under arrest. Grandma's under arrest for child endangering for transporting a four-month-old in a car without a car seat and holding the child and placing it in a front seat with a seat belt. Then mom interfered during our arrest and tried to take the child and put the child in her car when she was directly ordered not to. So she's under arrest for obstructing and resisting arrest. And grandma's going to go for child endangering. That's where we're at. >> Because they did say uh someone from Ohio Mentor was coming to get the two children. Yes. Then Mahoney County Children Services is coming to get the newborn. >> Mahoney County Children Services is coming to get the baby. >> Yes. >> And I'm getting R1 and Aristotle. >> Correct. >> So you're you're from I'm Karen Paradise. I'm the social worker here. >> Yes. Ohio. From Ohio. >> Oh, okay. >> Yeah. >> Do you have your ID on you, ma'am? >> I have license. Yes. >> My driver was >> Oh, that's fine. You got your name right there. >> Yeah. So I can scan it. >> Tana Warren. >> Oh, yes. We were told >> So mom went to jail, too. Yeah. She tried fighting. She tried to take the kid and was going to put the kid in her car and leave with the kid and I had to grab the kid out of the car and she wouldn't let go of the kid while I was trying to hold on to it. Then once we put her mom under arrest, she tried to interfere in between. So she got charged with the obstructing for that. Then she was physically trying to pull away when we were putting her in handcuffs. So she got a resisting arrest as well. So, >> merry Christmas. >> Yeah. Gift that keeps on giving. >> Yeah. >> Thank you. >> You're welcome. >> All right. >> We have a car. Whose car seat is that? >> That is his car. >> That is his that mom had it in her car. >> Foster mom. >> Yes. >> No. Yes. Yes. Correct. >> Is she the biological of this little guy? >> No. Okay. I didn't know that part. >> Yeah. But >> but he was kind of wrapped in that blanket like it was kind of scary. [laughter] >> So >> they said he's >> grandma said he's sick. >> Yeah, you could tell. >> Did they take >> to an urgent care? Probably not. >> I feel like he's warm and clearly I mean I know RSV is going around pretty bad. >> The mother was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing official business while the grandmother faced a child endangerment charge. Under Ohio law, if convicted, the grandmother could face up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine. A similar penalty could apply to the mother. Caring for children must go hand in hand with awareness and responsibility. Sometimes protecting them means slowing down, following the rules, and placing safety above urgency. here. >> No one knows exactly what she was experiencing, but it was clear she was not in a suitable condition to be transporting a child. On October 10th, 2022, police received a report of a traffic followed by a vehicle leaving the area. After identifying the vehicle involved, officers activated their emergency lights and sirens to initiate a stop. However, the car continued along several roads, moved through traffic signals, and passed multiple safe opportunities to pull over. The concern grew when officers learned that an 8-year-old girl was inside. They ultimately used a department approved method to bring the vehicle to a stop. >> He stopped at the intersection. >> HEY, ROLL THE WINDOW DOWN NOW. >> ROLL THE WINDOW DOWN [screaming] NOW. SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF NOW. ROLL YOUR WINDOW DOWN AND SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF NOW. ROLL THE WINDOW DOWN AND SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF NOW. [screaming] ROLL DOWN YOUR WINDOW. >> Pull over. You have nowhere to go. Stop the vehicle now. You have nowhere to go. Pull over. Stop the vehicle. Stop the vehicle right now. You have nowhere to go. Pull the vehicle over right now. You have nowhere to go. Stop the vehicle. Stop the vehicle. Stop the vehicle. Pull over. Shut the vehicle off. Shut the vehicle off right now. Shut your vehicle off right now. Stick your hands out the window. Hands out the window. >> Stick your hands out the window now. >> Up to the ceiling. Do not move. >> Hands on the roof. Do not move. Touch them to the roof. DO NOT MOVE. >> DRIVER, OPEN THE DOOR. >> DRIVER, OPEN THE DOOR. Step out and listen to the kilo >> driver. OPEN THE DOOR. FACE AWAY WHEN YOU STEP OUT. Face away. >> I was in the vehicle. >> Face away and back up to the sound of my voice. Now >> face away from me. Look away. Now walk back. Walk back. Walk back. Now >> walk back. >> You got her. >> Come here, little girl. Come here. It's okay. Is your sister with you? Is it just you all by yourself? Is there anybody else in the vehicle? Okay, come here. Come here to me really quick. >> Are you okay? She says no. She says it's just her. It's just >> Oh, here. Go to my sergeant. Okay. He's Sergeant Lawrence. Go to Sergeant Lawrence. >> What happened? >> What is going on? What is going on? What happened? >> Go this way. >> Oh my goodness, baby. It's okay. It's okay. >> Take a seat. >> Okay. >> Are you okay? >> Okay. Come over here to my vehicle real quick. Okay. Who you on the Who are you on the tablet with? >> Here. Sit your butt here. Can I pick you up? I'm going to sit you in my seat. Okay. Who you on the tablet with? >> Grammy. >> Grammy. Let me talk to Grammy. Hi Grammy. I'm Officer O with Yokow Police Department. >> Hi there, Officer Owen. What's happening? >> Is who's in the vehicle with her? Is that her mom? >> Yes. >> Got you, Teddy Bear. Okay. So, her mom her mom got into a >> a small pursuit. >> I saw the um the thingy right there is bent. >> Yes. >> So, I see. No, I was scared. >> So, the driver of the vehicle uh hit another vehicle and then she >> and she failed to stop whenever we tried to pull her over. >> Oh. >> So, she Yep. So, where are you at? >> I'm I'm um on off of 60th A. >> Yeah. >> West Southwest. Where are you? >> We are eastbound about the 80th A of 40 by 315 where the overpass is. I'm scared. It's my mama. >> Well, your mommy's up there talking to the other officer. Okay. >> And um >> I'm going to need a family member. Uh is there a family member that can come pick her up? >> Yes, I can come pick her up and um I can bring her to my house or I can bring her to her mom's house where >> No, I want your house, Grammy. >> Yeah, she'll she'll probably end up going to your house. Um >> Okay. >> So, I'll just um let me get your phone number real quick. Say right here. Okay. >> Courtney, how spell your name? >> C O U R T N E Y. What's your middle initial? >> B. >> Last name. >> Once the situation was stabilized, officer's top priority was contacting a guardian. A FaceTime call between her and her grandmother became a crucial connection, helping confirm a family member who could pick her up. >> Oh, no. That's my old number. 352. I'm just freaking out cuz my daughter is I don't want her to be scared right now. Well, I mean, you shouldn't have been doing what you were doing. >> What was I doing? >> What's uh what's your phone number? >> It is. >> Oh my gosh. >> Not yet. Um I'm just getting person's information for right now. >> Okay. >> Put your feet in here real quick. >> Where? >> Let's hold off on that then. >> Yeah. >> All right. I'll let you stay on the tablet if you want to go ahead and start uh heading this way towards the side of town. What is your name? >> Eliza. >> How do you spell it? >> L I >> Okay. And what is your last name? >> Do you know how to spell that? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Hey, Miss Joan. >> Yes. >> Does does her does Eliza's mom have any medical conditions >> or um health issues that would cause her to uh not drive properly? No, not at this time. In the past, she might have had something, but she's cleared from her doctor. She had seizures at one time. >> She she did have seizures at some point. >> Yes. She she hasn't had that. She got a doctor that was like few years ago that cleared her. So, I hope it's not that again. >> Uh you could just head towards the PD which is on South Pine and 40. >> Okay. And then um you could just stay on FaceTime if you if you if you want while you're headed this way so you could talk to Eliza. >> My iPad. >> Okay, that sounds good. I'll head toward 441. Grammy, I might hang up because my iPad's um on um 30%. >> Oh, you got plenty of plenty of battery. >> Stay fine until I get to you. >> All right. Thank you so much. >> You go to Meadow Brook. >> Okay. I'm >> Okay. I'm just going to leave you on and hand you back to Eliza. Okay. >> Second grade. >> Thank you so much. Awesome. There you go. >> I'll let you hold that again. Okay. >> Okay. You doing all right, friend? >> Okay. >> Were you guys out at the World Equestrian Center? Is that where you guys were coming from? >> Well, she came from that, but my Grammy picked um get bring me to OBS to pick My mom picked me up. >> OBS. Okay. So, does your mommy hang out at OBS a lot? >> Um when she has to pick me up. >> Oh, so she's Okay. And but sometimes I when I go back to also almost every time when I'm at my Grammys because or sometimes um she her phone probably died because she hanged up because her phone probably died. >> Yeah. But she's on her way out here. So we'll hang out for a little bit. Okay. I may have to let somebody else sit with you um so me and your mommy can have a talk. Okay. So, in a little bit, um, I'll let you sit in another cop car. Okay. >> When the adults struggled to remain composed, it was striking to see an eight-year-old stay calm and cooperate with officers. >> You allowed to have candy. >> Which candy do you want? Chocolate or how about an airhead? >> Okay, I'll give you one of these Airheads. >> Probably if someone had a gun and >> Did you see my >> I saw Yeah. and her yelling. So >> I was trying to get your mommy's attention and she wasn't listening >> because she she couldn't >> she couldn't hear me? >> Yeah. >> Oh, well that's okay. >> I was yelling at her. >> Did she hear you? >> Yeah, but she she her car got so bumpy it wouldn't stop. >> Oh, >> and she knew when I told her she she said okay. And then she and then I called her. So, you called grandma? >> Yeah, because I because like because I call her normally and like she's my mom's never been in the she's never been like doing this, but she's only been because a friend the her friend kid stole. So she almost got but she didn't but she was but she didn't but she never like been in this situation. >> Oh it's >> so she doesn't know what to do. >> Okay. Well in case you ever get in this situation if you ever see lights and sirens you got to pull over. Okay. >> Yeah. in my I was like my Grammy if my Grammyy's been alive for 86 years then she knows what >> okay >> so I called her because I thought like she's probably been pulled over before so I called her and then I told her because like my mom she sometimes gets really tired tired and sometimes she takes benadryil and it makes her tired and >> really >> and I told her are did you take benadryil because she was acting funny and she was like no and I was like are you sir and she was like >> yes >> does your does your daddy live with you guys? >> No because mommy >> my dad lived with his girlfriend and my mom boyfriend. Oh, okay. >> Because she she was saying that he did nothing. But but he's saying that she did nothing. And I don't know. I don't really know because when I was a baby, they were they dated. But when I was a baby, I was only like two, so I didn't really remember. That's how she was acting in the car. She was she was doing this and she was putting her hands up in the air and I was like to it was to the point where I was crying twice because she because like every time there was a curve she wouldn't stop and like where we were close to our house and she didn't go to the to the part where we get to our house and she was and I told her are we going to the house and she was like yes and I was like no because I can tell I've seen this I haven't seen this I've seen this part but we're not where we're not going in where there's like public. >> At the patrol vehicle, the mother appeared visibly unsettled. Officers also noted certain items inside the car that required further review. >> Go on and stuff. >> Hey, I got to read you something real quick. Okay. I know you're falling asleep. >> So, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can will be used against you in the court of law. You still wish to speak to me? >> Sure. >> Okay. Uh, this officer is going to check you out real quick. So, I think you're under arrest. Open. You're under arrest. That's correct. Stand up for me. I have to pat you down. Make sure you got nothing in your pockets. Let me ask you a couple questions. Do you have anything on you? You got any needles? Anything that's going to poke me, stick me, anything like that? No. Okay. Got to stand up real quick for me. Okay. >> I can't believe this is happening right now. She is young. She I can't believe this is happening right now. Um, she is only eight. >> Only eight. Okay. What school does she go to? >> Matter book academy. >> Okay, gotcha. All righty. Stay right there. >> I cannot believe this is happening. Oh my god. Help me, Lord. I cannot believe this is happening right now. God. ma'am. Okay. Just making sure you're going to open this door. Okay. EMS is going to take a look at you. What's going on tonight? >> And she's already Miranda. >> Okay. Need to ask anything. >> Okay. >> Um there's just a bunch of >> medical pre-ol looks at it, but there's like gummies and stuff in there for like pre like package or whatever. So, I don't know if they'll cause any medication. >> You can go ahead and hook her up. >> Okay. >> You want her to you want us to pull her out or she fine? right where she's at. >> So, uh, she was probably at whack for some point of time. >> She's a bunch of wet stuff in there. >> Um, little girl was at grandma's house. She picked little girl up from OBA from grandma and came this way. >> Anything? You wearing Were you wearing your seat belt? You driving? >> Okay. >> You crashing anything? >> No. >> No. >> You said you were wearing your seat belt. Airbags go off at all? Did the airbags go off at all? >> No. >> Recording. Will >> you step out for me so we could check your blood? >> And then turn around so we can blood sugar from your finger. >> Okay. >> Are you diabetic? >> No. >> No. Okay. When's the last time you had something to eat? >> Um >> right here in this car. >> Just go ahead and turn around and sit sit down on your butt first and then and then just scoot back in. You can stay sitting sideways. Just scoot back in. All right. You want me to buckle you or you? >> Meanwhile, the mother repeatedly stated that she was in shock and did not understand why the situation had intensified. She disagreed with the traffic concerns officers said they had observed earlier. >> Okay. All right, little Miss Eliza. I will see you later. Okay. Grandma's on her way to get you. >> What is going on? >> You don't know what's going on? >> No. What? My daughter is in the SUV. >> Yeah, she's hanging out with one of my officers. What? Oh my goodness. What? Wait, can I say bye? What is going on? >> I don't want you talking. Why? >> Because you ran from us and you put her life in danger. >> I didn't even know it was going on. I swear. >> I understand. >> Oh my goodness. >> So, you you kind of ran your car into another vehicle and then you didn't stop when we told you to stop and you took us on a long um pursuit. >> Oh my goodness. I didn't even realize. I was trying to get over. I didn't even know. Oh my goodness. >> You got to come to a complete stop. >> I didn't Oh my gosh. >> I couldn't pull over. There was cars behind me. >> Oh my gosh. I wasn't just going to stop in the middle of the road. >> You have to >> with cars behind me. >> We were behind you. I was behind you. >> I couldn't stop though. There was cars behind me. >> I was behind you. I was the one that was trying to pull you over. >> I wasn't just going to stop in the middle of the road, though. >> You had 56 opportunities to pull over into parking lots or pull off the side of the road. You had a plenty of opportunities to stop your vehicle. What's making you act like this? How come you're not able to know what's going on? Are you Did you take too many of those gummies in your car? Or >> what gummies? >> You've got THC gummies or hCG gummies or whatever you call them. I wasn't just going to stop in the middle of the road. >> Well, you didn't pull over either. >> I couldn't with the cars behind me. >> I was I was the cop car behind you. >> I'm sorry. I wasn't just going to stop in the middle of the road. >> Okay. That's dangerous to just stop. >> Well, it's dangerous to to not stop and keep making police pull you over and your vehicle was disabled by we had to pop off four of your tires. Did you drink alcohol or anything tonight? >> No. >> You didn't have nothing? >> Nothing. >> Did you smoke anything? >> No. Nothing. >> Well, and you're not diabetic? >> No. >> And you weren't having a seizure? >> No. >> So, what do you what do you think the problem is? >> I Nothing. I just wasn't going to stop in the middle of the road. >> Well, you whenever you came up to a couple red lights, you didn't even stay at the red light. You went right through them. I didn't run any lights. >> Yeah, you ran two red lights. >> What? I wouldn't just run a light. >> You did. You ran from us. You You're supposed to pull over when you see cop cars behind you. >> I didn't run any lights or anything, though. I wasn't just going to stop in the middle of the road. Like, can't believe this is happening right now. >> She also denied under influence or experienced a medical issue at that time. This reminds us that emotional overwhelm can sometimes affect judgment and awareness, even when someone does not fully recognize it themselves. >> I would never just stop in the middle of the road. >> You put your you put your daughter's life in danger and your mom's on her way to get her. And uh your your fiance was notified as well. >> What? >> Your fiance was notified. So, your fiance and your mom both know that your little girl is in need of somebody to come get her. >> Wow. I can't believe this is happening right now. I want I'm not just going to stop while I'm driving in the middle of the road. >> Well, you didn't even stop after you hit the car. You s you sideswiped another vehicle and just kept going. >> I wasn't just going to stop in the middle of the road. >> Well, you got to stop whenever you get into a traffic crash. You can't just keep going. If you get into a car crash, you have to stop. You can't just >> drive away. I mean, 16-year-old kids who just got their driver's license know that. >> I don't know how I'm acting any different. >> Well, you're really you're slurred speech. You're not able to you're not able to maintain a balance while you're walking. >> Um >> I'm just in shock right now. >> Okay. It just it seems like you're under the influence of something. So, I'm trying to figure out. >> No, sir. There's nothing wrong. >> I'm just in shock right now. Then anything else? Oh, no, no, no, no, no. I said, "Are you sure?" Cuz when you see her, if if y'all ever decide to talk to her, you'll see this. She's just moving like this. And just tell her to look at me. And she never really gave me much eye contact. And then she said, "Nothing happened." I said, "You sure nothing happened?" "Did anything happened last night?" >> And so she said, "No, no." So I said, "Well, tell me what is how does it work in your house? Do y'all share the whole does everyone live in the same room? how many rooms do you have? She say three bedrooms. And she said that his family lives in one of the bedrooms and they take turns cooking in the kitchen. So, I don't know if this happened inside the room and she wasn't aware of it. So, what about him getting home? >> Well, I I think they're working on defects trying to get him to come over trying to get over here as quickly as possible. >> After receiving the details, officers went to the home to speak with the mother. At first, she denied the concerns and stated that she did not know how the marks had appeared on the child. >> Hi. Are you Miss Hammond? >> Yes. >> Can I talk to you out here, please? >> Are you the only one here, ma'am? >> Okay. Like other like other adults are here? >> Yes. >> All right. I need to read you something and then we're going to see if you will willing to talk to me or not. Okay. Prior to question and effort to obtain statements, you must uh I have to give you these warnings. Okay? You have the right to remain in silent. Anything you say or do can be used against you in court. Are you willing to talk to me about what happened this morning? I don't know what happened this morning. >> What do you mean you don't know what happened this morning? I'm asking let me before we get into asking you all that. Okay. Are you willing to tell me about what happened this morning? >> Oh, yes. >> Okay. You're saying you don't know what happened this morning. Okay. What about the incident between you and your son? >> That happened. Okay. Why does he have marks on him then? >> I don't know. >> Okay. You What do you mean you don't know? >> I don't know. When I When I woke him up this morning, I got him dressed and he went out the door. >> Okay. Was there an argument between you and his red folder? >> I asked him where it was. Yes. >> Okay. So, now we're getting somewhere. Okay. So, what happened in between that and him not able to find his red folder? >> I kept telling him to look for it and if he if he can't find it, he would go to school without it. That's what I told him. >> Okay. Well, how did he ended up getting those marks on his neck and crowned over on his eyes? >> I don't I He didn't have no marks when >> I didn't touch this boy. Everybody was in here this morning. >> Ma'am, why is he telling Why is he telling the counselor they >> I don't know, >> ma'am? It's not I don't know. >> This is crazy. >> It's not crazy. >> It is because I my kids in there right now touch my kids. >> Ma'am, why why why would he say that to the >> I don't know. Like he didn't have no marks on him or nothing when he left. I told him to go out the door. He can't find his P folder, but I wind up finding it before he get out the door. So, I told his god sister, hand him his folder, hand his >> Well, then let me ask you this. How would he just show up show up to school with those marks? >> I don't know. I don't know. Him and his brother play, fight, fight all day long. They throw toys at each other. They do all types of stuff. I don't know. One time he had a mark on him. I couldn't even explain it cuz I didn't know. >> But why would he just say mom did it then? >> I don't know. I don't know. Well, I don't even touch my kids. None of them. >> Okay. You >> And I have four. Well, one is right now is in this situation, but I have three with me. >> I don't know was not only an unconvincing explanation, but could also be seen as avoiding accountability. >> All right. You got anything else that you you want to tell me about this morning? >> No, cuz I have This is confusing to me. >> It's not confusing. I'm giving you I'm giving you straight questions. It is because I my my son didn't have no marks on him before he >> he didn't have nothing wrong with him. I did not touch him. All I said was look for your phone. He couldn't find his fer. I said, "Well, your bonus went. How am I rather than you asking me a question? >> You're asking me questions and I'm trying to explain to you what all happened this morning." >> And I'm explaining to you what your son told the counselor this morning. Why would he say that? >> I don't know. It was people in the house with me. It's plenty of people in the house with me every day. That's crazy. >> You got anything else you want to tell me? I don't know what to say. Like I told you what happened. >> Okay. All right. Go ahead and turn around. Put your hands behind your back and be under arrest. >> Can I let her know because we'll get there. We'll get there. We'll get there. We'll get there. We'll get there. We'll get there. >> No, I don't have no shoes. I don't have >> Okay, we will get there. We will stop. This is crazy. >> We will get there. >> And she was in the house with me. This is what's crazy. >> Put your Put your hands together right here. >> Put your hands together right there. >> Just relax your hand like you're kind of praying like that. Okay. >> This is so crazy. >> Stop, ma'am. She has to lock them so they don't tighten up on you. Okay. >> All right. She's going. What do you need to get? You want You need your You want Okay. You need your shoes. You want your wallet and your phone. >> If I'm When I'm going to need them that for if y'all arrested me. >> Well Well, not only that. I'm trying to give you an opportunity so that way you can try to bond out if you have >> I don't have no money. I don't have nothing. >> Okay. Well, can you not make some phone calls? >> Homeless and everything. >> Can you not make some phone calls? >> No, I don't know. I don't have nobody. >> It's just me, her, and the my kids. That's it. >> Okay. Well, I don't know who who >> This is crazy, >> ma'am. I'm trying to help you out. Okay. >> I'm be stuck in there because I don't have nobody. >> Okay. Well, I'm trying to let >> This is crazy that he would even say that. >> Are you going to let me talk? >> Yes. >> Okay. I'm trying to let whoever the adult is in there to let let them know of what's going on so that way we can figure out with with you and everything. Okay. But I have enough to have to take you downtown right now. Okay. >> Okay. All right. >> I can't I can't win for nothing anyway. What what shoes do you have that we can't put on your feet? >> I guess. >> Okay. Where are they located at? >> In the living room. >> In the living room. Okay. What's the lady inside's name? >> Miss Daria. >> The documented information together with the mother's unclear response resulted in her facing formal legal proceedings. >> Miss Daria. >> Hello. >> Hello. Hang on. Stay right here for me, honey. Okay. I have to take her downtown. Okay. >> Okay. Can I come in? >> All right. I'm not sure if if you heard any kind of commotion between her and her son this morning. >> From her son? >> Yes. >> What happened? >> Well, he's got marks on him. Okay. He's telling everybody he's telling the counsel. He's tell he's telling the counselor and he's very fearful to come back home because mom ended up putting scrap like I mean there's a good mark on him where there's to where he does not want to come back home with mama and it's involving a red folder in which she's telling me it was involving a red folder and then she don't want to tell me whether or not that she did something or not. So, but I already have enough anyways. >> So, UM >> NOT THAT I not that I know of this morning. Okay. >> Know they got up, he came, he always come in my room, say, "See, you got mom at the school." >> Gave him my hug and kiss >> and went out the door. Everything seemed fine this morning. >> Well, I guess it wasn't. I don't want her to be in jail, but I have to I have to do I have to I have to do what I have to do, unfortunately. But I'm trying to give her a chance. I'm trying to help her out with some things. So, >> I don't get none of them. You can look at all of them. None of them have marks. If for some reason you don't bond out today and after you make phone calls. Okay. >> I don't got nobody so I know I'm bonding. >> Okay. Um I'm going to make your court. >> Let me search you real quick. I'm going to go ahead and make your court date for tomorrow. 9:00. I think they have 9:00 court. >> Yeah. 9:00 cuz they going to >> The mother was charged with battery to a child. Under Georgia law she could face a potential sentence of 2 to 5 years in prison. Protecting children is not solely the responsibility of one family, but a shared duty of society. A child who grows up in a safe environment today is more likely to become an [music] adult who values care and respect for others in the future. A 911 call triggered a high-profile case when police discovered evidence suggesting potential exposure to substances in a child's environment. And the situation began with the mother herself. >> What the is going on? She said that she's on something. you said you and I'm like, "Okay." >> May 2nd, [music] 2023. Officers were dispatched to an apartment after reports that a 3-year-old girl may have been exposed to. Witnesses on site quickly assisted the child, checking her breathing and calling for medical help. Upon arrival, authorities immediately gathered information to verify the situation. >> Dire little bit more um yeah, extreme. So, I run out. I see her like Sebie and like pounding on her chest and I'm like, "What's happening? What's going on?" and she's like, "I think she on something." I said, "Okay, well, I got her to give her to me and I started pounding on her back and then pounding on her chest." And Summer, could she have gotten into anything? I don't remember if she said yes or no, but I know the history. I know. So, I just immediately grabbed and I gave her Windows uh maybe in the left nostril. I don't remember which nostril up first. She kind of made a gas. I waited a little bit, gave her the other one in the other nostril. In the meantime of all that happening, I called 911 and got the operator on the phone and then she walked me through putting her >> calm down. She just went you guys >> I'm happy with restraining her. No, that's >> Get her out of the house. >> Where's the or something. I don't know what >> police went upstairs to [music] speak with the mother. Instead of staying calm, she became uncooperative and agitated, leading authorities to detain her following proper procedure. >> I was going to take my pants off. >> Yeah, I'm not looking. You lost the ability to be a >> I didn't lose an ability to be a >> 100%. >> You guys are medical. You have to You didn't finish your thing. I hear everything that's going on. >> Yeah, we're going to finish that at the hospital. >> Bunch of people in here, isn't there? >> Good job. >> Come on, Joe. Watch out. >> Hey, buddy. >> I need a bra. >> I didn't know you were an officer. I thought you were an ET. >> She needs a diaper on. That's why I'm getting her a diaper. You guys, mom, they're not let me put a diaper on her. She has She needs a diaper. She needs a diaper. Please stop. >> Sir, why? No. Please. No. Why? I thought YOU WERE ETS. I WAS TRYING TO GET DRESSED. SHE DOESN'T HAVE A DIAPER ON. >> WHERE WHERE ARE DIAPERS? I'll grab >> They wouldn't let me grab it. >> That's right. >> I wasn't even checking their >> I'll grab her a couple of her diapers. >> Stupid things. I didn't know they were caught. >> I wasn't paying attention to what they were. I was just trying to get ready. I don't even know what we're going for the hospital. Now they're arresting me. >> Does she have like a little toy that she would like to bring with me? >> Double lock your handcuffs. Okay. Hi everyone. You okay? >> NO. TO DIE. PLEASE, I WANT TO GO. Please stop. PLEASE, I WANT TO GO. >> PLEASE STOP. NO, there's nothing in my pants. Stop. [screaming] I can't breathe. I can't breathe. >> I can't breathe. I can't breathe. This isn't fair. I was supposed to go to the [ __ ] hospital with my let go. >> Trying to make the handcuffs less tight. >> IT'S TOO TIGHT. >> WHAT THE GET OFF MY HIP. I'M PREGNANT. HAVING A MISCARRIAGE. >> Flip onto your stomach onto my bone. >> Flip onto your stomach so they can lock your handcuffs. >> I would advise you. >> I knew it. >> I would advise you not to assault me. >> I'm not on your spine. >> You literally on your head. >> My [ __ ] spine. >> STOP TOUCHING ME. Stop touching me. >> You're under arrest. >> Okay. Well, get off of me. >> Stop moving. >> She's not letting me. >> Just let her. >> Can you LOOSEN IT NOW? >> NO. >> NOW YOU'RE DONE manhandling me. >> I'll double lock them. >> Although the mother claimed she was pregnant and showing signs of a miscarriage, authorities followed proper procedures to ensure everyone's safety. >> OW. [screaming] >> STOP YELLING. >> NO. STOP MOVING. >> OKAY, GIRL. Please loosen the cup. >> You should be a dumb. >> IT'S FINE. YOU >> YOU'RE DONE. You're done. You're done. >> YOU'RE ASSAULT A WOMAN. >> YOU WERE ASSAULTED. >> YEAH, you touched me. >> Quiet. Stop. >> Be quiet. He is the least of your worries right now. BE QUIET. >> LET GO OF >> BE QUIET. >> BE QUIET. >> Adjust him. >> So, can you listen to me? I'm trying to adjust it. >> This is my house till I GET TO YOUR HOUSE >> right now. This is not your house. >> Please be quiet. >> We're in here. >> PLEASE. >> I WANT TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL. >> THIS WASN'T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN. NO, LIKE THAT. STOP. [screaming] NO. I don't want to go. >> Stay like that and I'll go in YOUR HANDCUFFS. OKAY. >> NO, I'M TALKING to dog. >> He's jumping on me. >> Your dog. Your dog's fine. >> I'm literally having a miscarriage right now. And you're putting me in handcuffs right now. I'm still technically [snorts] pregnant. That's illegal. >> Like seriously. >> You want to wait or do you want to move? >> Uh let's Are they clear down there? >> No, they're still >> Let's wait till they're clear. >> Why can't I go to the hospital? Did she already leave? >> Legally. >> DID SHE ALREADY LEAVE? >> In situations like this, cooperation can greatly reduce tension. But unfortunately, the mother continued to resist. >> Baby, >> can I take some photos, too? >> Yep. >> DON'T TAKE PHOTOS OF my room. Are you serious? Why would you do that? >> For evidence. >> Of what? >> Of child endangerment. >> Not child endanger ingested somehow. >> I don't even know if SHE DID. I DIDN'T HAVE ANY. When somebody wakes up from taking, it only means that they've been gent. >> I thought you was on a Tums. Do you see the T? We were all just napping. >> I'll let the hospital figure that out. >> Well, you don't need to hold you. >> No, please. You're sweaty. >> I'M OBVIOUSLY COUGHED. >> STOP. Don't touch me. [laughter and gasps] >> Here. No, you're staying here. [laughter] figured out. >> Why do you want to put your body on me? I'm not doing it. >> All you need to do is sit here [laughter] and not move. >> Get off my body. >> We want you to stop moving. >> If you stop moving and you sit calmly, >> then I'll stop. >> Don't touch me. >> Additional officers were called in to support, ensuring the family's safety and carefully assessing the apartment situation. being super squirly and just squirming around >> BECAUSE THEY'RE TOUCHING ME and they're sweaty. I stop. My room is literally just clean. Now you're trying to think where is this energy child in danger. Oh, I have too much clothes. >> It's not really the clutter we're worried about. It's one of the access. >> There's no mom. >> All right. Now, let me double lock these so I don't get any tighter on you. >> So, can I take some of my before I go into the gel? >> Are you going to overdose? >> How can I overdose? >> You're going to overdose once. >> I'm not going to overdose. I need to be a couple to the nurse and then I'll have one. >> Okay, they can provide you a prescription for >> No, my prescription's out. >> I have a couple I want to take with to jail or I will >> make sure to get you your medical stuff down there. Okay. >> No. >> Yes. >> I just want to take my stop trying to mess with your cup. >> I'm not going to get it by tonight and I'm going to go into shopping on the floor in Clark County and never get how it's >> Yes, it is. I just tried. Can I just grab us a >> No, absolutely not. >> Okay, you guys don't care about >> Are they clear? Do you want any shoes? You got any slip-on slippers? >> I want to go to the bathroom. >> Okay, we'll get you to the bathroom with Joe. >> No, I want to go now. >> Okay. No, sir. >> I want to go to the bathroom. >> No, >> we're going down the stairs now. We We can >> Whatever you stepped into your pants, you'll get it later. >> Yeah, I can I can see this, too. >> There's something in your shirt. >> That's my third nipple. >> I You know what? I can't see that. >> During the inspection, an officer noticed the room was cluttered and contained items that raised safety concerns, [music] especially since this is the child's living space. >> You want to just stand there, take a photo, take a look around. >> Y taking photos in my [ __ ] room that I just tore apart. >> Let's go to me. If you find her car keys, let me know. >> Okay. >> Are you a police officer? >> I am. >> Okay. I'm just wondering. >> I am. What does her uh keys look like? Just trying to see what uh that child might have taken. The last time I saw anything like I saw foil was in a um a little container on her >> nightstand. >> Nightstand, but that's all I see in the foil or debris. Like usually I find some with debris. >> Was that today? >> No. >> She is chronic user >> of what? >> Um she goes through phases where she will get clean. >> Okay. >> But yeah, we've been fighting this for >> your mom. >> Your mom, I'm assuming. He's not on the lease, but I can't keep I can't keep her out. Would you lose the lease? >> Yeah, you would have to get like a uh eviction. So, you can do that through the court. Or if you feel like there's other issues that require protection order, then file for one of those at the courthouse as well. And um those are kind of your two options right now for not having her here. >> Foiling. >> That's what you found the foiling before? >> Yeah, it was on the table when I saw it >> the last time. >> Yeah. >> How long ago was that? Oh, that was um maybe a little bit before lunchtime. >> Oh, today. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> The child's grandmother present at the scene provided additional context about the mother's past challenges and health history. >> Did the daughter admit to you at all she was using >> today? No, she did not admit anything. >> But you know your daughter's the >> Yeah, I know sheed to some I I think it's I can't be for certain. >> She was asking to take her or else she wouldn't show. >> Yeah, she was >> she she doesn't have any action. She doesn't have a right now. She's out. >> Is there a reason you keep hand on? >> Well, I'm also uh kind of in the medical field. I I um I'm a tech licensed vet tech and I know my daughter uses so I wanted to have it on hand. Then I work at the new med in Vancouver. We've had a couple of overdoses out there. So that's why >> you're trying to help your daughter get clean. >> I'm trying. >> Do you know it's it's damn near impossible to keep the kids safe while you're trying. It's too much on one person. >> I know. I have been struggling >> over work trying to save one over the other. >> You know what I mean? That's going to be a tough That's a tough family decision. You know what I mean? Yeah. I saw no remorse. >> She's not in her right frame of mind right now. So, I'm not going to fault her for that. >> That's her choices. Yeah, that's a tough >> That but that is also a disease. >> Is but it has to be treated and you can't fix something. I help them try to fix themselves. >> I understand that. >> But if they don't, >> if she's not going to go, what am I supposed to do? >> Remorse on her part. >> Well, yeah. I mean you of course I I would love to see the remorse but she >> well sometimes you can't help her and all you can do is try to get custody of the kids and take care of the children. >> It is such a mess right now with the courts because there's a court case in a different county and we can't do in here in Clark County. >> The situation became more complex due to [music] existing legal disputes within the family. >> Okay, perfect. Came back as Okay, >> there's probably in the bedroom >> probably. Yeah. So, we're we're locking it down like a crime scene right now cuz we we legally entered it. >> So, there is a restraint. There's two competing restraining orders between her and the one that protects her from him. Uh she the children are listed, but then there's also one protecting him from her. So, I'm getting a copy to see if the children are also listed. I mean, I know it's competing orders, but if it lists in there and she's not supposed to have the kids and this is happening again, >> uh yeah, but they're emailing it to me. No. >> Inside the grandmother recounted in detail what had happened to the child. >> You called us. >> Yeah. >> Regarding >> regarding getting help. I wasn't for sure if what I was doing was helping. So, I wanted to get the professionals here. >> What did you do before you called us? >> Oh, I came out of my room cuz I was sleeping cuz I work graveyard cuz I heard Summer screaming and I saw her coming out of her room holding a limp. What the is going on? She said that she's on something. She said she'sing and I'm like, okay. So, we brought her in my room. I took her from Summer and started pounding on her back, pounding on her chest, and I wasn't getting any results. I said, "Summer, could she have gotten into anything?" And she, I believe, said there's a possibility or something like that or maybe I'm making that up. I don't know. I said, "Call 911." She went in her room to find her phone and I was like at that point also trying to get my can. I had my in my drawer next to my bed. You're worried that you're >> cuz she was totally unresponsive. Just limp lips were blue. Administered the first dose in her I think her left right mouth full. She made like a little bit of a breath. I'm like, "Okay, she's coming around." I kept talking to her. Oh, and by that time I did have 911 on the phone. No, I didn't have them on the phone yet. >> And this was after you gave her the dose, right? >> Yeah. And then I gave her the second dose because the she still wasn't, you know, coming around. Well, after the second dose is when um I got a little bit more of a response, like she breathed a little bit better, maybe a couple of like, you know, kind of breaths like that, >> like short breaths. >> Yeah. And I was still screaming at somewhere. I said, "Call 911. Call 911." Cuz she still wasn't nothing had happened. So, I'm like I think in the middle of giving the second or I don't know if I'd already given the second dose or before I gave the second dose, I called 911 on my phone because it was right there. And so, she she was breathing. I could hear it. I could feel it. And then she eventually, like I think right before you guys came, she actually looked like alert. I put her on her side just in case she's, you know, vomited. And Summer was um putting clothes on her. And then I heard the knock on the door. I went downstairs to open the door. >> Did you hear any like toilets flushing or anything? >> No. No, I didn't hear any. And Summer's Summer's toilet is um is not the best flusher. So yeah, it doesn't always flush. When she became a little bit more responsive, she she was looser in her job. So, I was able to get a little bit of a better look. I did see some debris on her tongue. I don't know what that was from, but yeah, she wasn't actively on anything that I could tell. Color of like a orange creamsicle, you know, it's kind of orangey. And it was a just a little bit. It looked like it was um kind of dissolving. It wasn't solid. >> And you had mentioned earlier that you saw that tin foil in that black little container thing earlier today. What time do you think that was? >> Around 11:30. I remember sticking my head in there to check on everybody. And I did. That's when I saw the thing next to the bed with the foil and I asked her. I said, "What is that?" She just said it was to fix her candle. I don't. And yeah, cuz she knows, and I will be honest with you, whenever I see foil in my house of Reynolds, you know, foil container, I throw it away cuz I know what it's for. >> Have you been around her when she's high? >> Oh, yeah. It's bad. When she gets money in her pocket, she don't know how to act. But it hasn't been a constant, you know, usage. She's had her moments of sobriety and getting clean and for whatever reason something triggers her and she starts using again. This family is involved in multiple custody disputes [music] making it even more challenging to protect the child's best interests. >> Wow. >> She was not supposed to bring any more animals here. I've already got two. And then she brought two cats. So it just destroyed my house. >> A whole house in here. He's pretty sweet little guy. >> He puts up a lot with these little girls. He was trying to get custody of the girls. Basically, there's like a parenting agreement that's not a finalized parenting agreement. Long story short, we've had these girls full-time for a year now. He got charged with I don't remember exactly the charges for him, but he's never actually gone to court yet for that because he doesn't come to the court to him for that. And he's just recently got charged with and went to court for residential burglary. So, he hasn't had any contact with these girls for a year now. But when Summer either >> Yeah. When Summers tried to pull custody here, they wouldn't do it because that case is still going on at Greece Harbor. Yeah. It's just a hot mess and I don't know how to fix it. >> My assumption is that CPS will probably get involved and at least temporarily the kids in your [clears throat] place the kids in your custody. >> So, are you the one that took Summer to the >> No, she's done. >> Officer Affairs is the one that took the one trying to be very calm with her and patient with her. >> Yeah. when she gets upset, it's really really hard to get her. >> You know what I'm saying? And and I don't know if she's used today, but I know if she hasn't used, she's at least coming down. That affects her as well. She's mean as hell. >> And when you moved here, did she just follow you or >> She came because she had nowhere else to go. And you know, I have to be involved with the girls, too. So, >> and it's easier for them to all be underneath one room. >> Yeah. But the thing is, like she's not on the lease. She can't be on the lease. She's got a DVR on. I could not get her to leave as much as I wanted to get try and get her out like go to a rehab get clean but she she refused to leave. >> Plus it's the best time. Know it may not be the way you want to do it but we know the outcome going that way will be what is best for >> Yeah. Cuz what if I hadn't been here? >> The fact that she did not even want AMR to take vitals 100%. >> To be honest with you guys and you can write it in the book cuz I will tell the judge she didn't even want me calling 911. She did not want me call 911. She tried to stop. Well, she did hang up at one point. Nobody had answered yet, but I called them back. I mean, that's just cuz she doesn't want to get in trouble for the right and I understand that, but god damn it, the baby's like, right? >> While waiting for the detectives, police explained the investigation process and took temporary [music] steps to ensure the child's wellbeing. Oh, >> I hope you understand that as doesn't mean you're not going to see them again, right? That's why I said you got to work on getting custo. And unfortunately, you're probably going to have to distance yourself from your daughter until she can fix herself. >> Well, I hope she just stays locked up until she can get help. She needs help. >> We're still waiting on the detectives. So, we're going to we're still going to be here. No box. Big books. >> Do we take or do we leave it? >> Like the photo is in. >> They're not going to Yeah, they're not going to test it for anything. So, the kids aren't in here anymore. So, nothing. Uh, we got our warrant. Served it in the room. Didn't find anything. Any other places in the house? I don't want to tear this whole place apart. I know you live here, too. Our warrant is for the whole place, but we don't want to >> car garage. >> Okay. We'll go take a look at the car. Our warrant doesn't have the car listed on it, but we'll go take a look. I don't see anything. >> I'm not seeing anything in there. In the coming days, if you do find anything as you're living your life, give us a call and we can come collect it. Um, if you do find stuff, just don't move it. Just leave it where it is. As long as it's in a safe place, right? No one's going to, you know, the dogs are going to get it or like whatever like that. If it can't stay there, just leave it there. Call an officer over. They'll take some photos and take it from you. >> Uh, I'm going to hand you a copy of our uh warrant just to say that we just to show you that we did it and that it was signed by a judge. And then I'll just leave you with a a blank property receipt cuz we didn't take anything. >> Okay. >> Going to print out the um the last thing I need to print out for you. >> Um also um did the guy Zach from the get the DCYF? He was supposed to text me with information about if I call first thing in the morning the girls and I haven't received a text for you guys. >> We'll get that info for you. >> Finally, they announced the charges the mother would face. [music] >> Jessica. So he said for now it's going to be the just a generic office number. I can give that to you. Somebody's going to probably get assigned to the kids at probably like 7 or 8:00 in the morning. Hopefully, there'll be a a specific person to get it up. >> Are they all felonies? >> Nope. Uh, two of them are felonies, three of them misdemeanor. So, the she was charged with obstruction resisting position control substance being offended on her body. So, those are all three are misdemeanor and then felony of child mistreatment in the second degree and endangerment uh with a controlled substance. Any other questions for us? >> I don't think so. >> All right. I appreciate your cooperation, man. >> No worries. >> Yeah. >> Stay safe. >> Thank you. You as well. >> The mother faced charges of an instrument involving a controlled substance, secondderee criminal mistreatment, resisting arrest, [music] obstructing law enforcement, and possession of a controlled substance. This story not only highlights a legal case, but also serves as a reminder of the human element [music] in handling situations involving children, where the line between emotion, responsibility, and the law is delicate. In Indiana, what seemed like a minor incident over a plate of French fries led to police involvement while the child was present. >> I'll talk to you. Can you talk to her? >> No. >> Well, I want to talk to her about what happened. >> She's a minor and I'm her mother. I do not want her speaking. >> January 27th, 2025, officers were called to a threeeneration family dispute involving a grandmother, the mother, and a 12-year-old girl. It started over a meal when the mother and child had different opinions about a snack. When the grandmother tried to intervene, the situation became more tense. >> I want to pull out I want to fill out a police report. >> No, no, baby. No, no. I was cutting French fries. See what I got to deal with. >> Do you see what I have to deal with? THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THEY CAME IN TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH ME. >> I was cutting French fries and I dropped it. If you had my granddaughter in the room, you know, my granddaughter, she would have snatched me. >> Let me talk to you back here. >> You're a liar. >> Is there anyone else in the house other than me? >> Talk to my granddaughter. >> SHE'S 12 YEARS OLD. I'M NOT ALLOWING MY CHILD TO SPEAK TO NO NEW OFFICER. >> Go over there. Okay. I'm going to speak with her. All right. Okay. >> Officer Callahan Bloomington body cams on our team recorded. Okay. >> Hey there. >> What happened? >> She was cutting French fries. I pulled out the dinner for my child to eat some meatloaf and gravy and rice. I told her she was eating up for dinner. She got I raped. Turned around with the hand. Who got raped? >> She did. She's going through. This is the second time that that officer's been here. I'm not allowing my child to speak to you on your camera. I'm just going to let you know that. So, she turned around with the the in hand. I knocked her cane to the floor. She approached me with that. Told my daughter she'll be eating the fries. I said my daughter won't. My daughter said she'll be eating it. So I popped her in the head and said, "You're not eating no fries. You gonna eat whatever I cook you." And so she got out, came in. My daughter started crying. She got array came in snatching on me and I got to yelling at my child and told my child, "I'm your mother. You eat what I give you." She got out, had a again came into the room, dial 911. And I told 911, "You're the one that's out. You're the one with the in your hand. This my mother child." If I wanted to discipline my child, I could. That is it. But that is all. >> That's a little fast, but let me see. Just see if I got everything. Okay, so basically grandma's making French fries. Okay, she wants to get her French fries. You don't want her to eat the French fries. >> What I said was that she was having gravy, meatloaf, and rice. >> Okay. >> She got I >> So grandma then gets I rate with her hand because >> she's going to eat the French fries or she's not going to eat the fries. She's going to eat the meatloaf, rice, and green beans. >> She got upset. >> Okay. And then >> liar. >> So she had the cane in her hand and you >> No, the the cane I knocked to the floor. The she had in her hand. I knocked the cane to the floor. She did not have >> Oh, you just knocked the cane down >> 100%. >> So, you just knocked the cane down. >> That's a startle as was in her hand. >> Okay. Did she say she was going to cut you or anything like that or was just like just in her hand? >> In her hand. >> You look like this. Did you get out of my face? Cuz I lay out. I'm 42 years old. You 67. >> Why did you bump her in the head? >> Because she kept talking back to me about wanting the fries and eating the fries. And I told her that's not what she is eating. She's eating a full course meal. >> Okay. So then >> her mother. >> So she said then I want to eat the fries. You said no. >> I said no. you were she was talking back and you bumped her in the head. When you say you bob her in the head, was it like a open hand? >> [ __ ] out of V8. >> Okay. And so then >> there's you know there's parental discipline and stuff like that. Okay. So that's that's the >> I don't see any her head or anything like that. Okay. And then um so then after you bop her in the head, she got more 911. >> Okay. And then you bop her in the head, she still has the knife. Did you go to a different room or she go to a different room? >> My daughter went to the room. I went to the room to grab her so she can come back and get her hair done and she dial 911. >> Okay. So then she So your daughter goes to your room her room, you go to the room to grab her. Did grandma follow you with? >> Yes. >> In multigenerational households, [music] differences in parenting approaches often lead to conflicts that are hard to resolve. >> Oh, I I believe she had in her hand. Don't get me wrong. I believe she had a in her hand. I'm not saying that at all. You then go to a different room to go get your daughter and she has the hand. She's calling 911. >> Yes. >> She's dead though. >> Okay. But besides, you know, the bot to the head, no other physical that. >> Okay. And then hold on, ma'am. >> I don't want her getting >> I understand. No, no, no. We're not going to go. >> I don't want I don't want my child I don't want my child name your police report. Can you please stop? >> No, because you cannot go back. >> You're being forced on female. That's against the law. I'm not I mean, I'm giving you a direct order. >> I'm not I rateate with you. I appreciate that. So, sit over there. Okay. >> Sit over there while I speak with him. Okay. >> All right. >> Awesome. >> She said that she was going to have an argument because she said that the girl baby and she came over, grabbed her shirt like chest area and then threw the cane down. And then the grand baby came running here and supposed to like grab the baby like right in here and that was it. Okay. any box. Yeah. So, basically what she said was she want the fries. She said no. She started talking. I want the fries. She said no. Bed on the head. Why not? Said no cuz she was talking bad. And then she said she had a in her hand and that's when she was basically stop and ran. She went to the cave to go get her hair done. And then she came back in here on the phone. Yeah. I think we did. >> Yeah, it's kind of hurt. So, they no longer We got to figure out some sort of resolve this issue of some sort cuz you know we come right back here. Oh, yeah. >> When the police arrived, their goal was to help calm the situation. Tensions rose as the mother's reaction made the disagreement more intense. >> So, just with everything going on, is there anywhere else you guys could go for? I'm not saying you have to leave. >> I was just wondering if there's anywhere else, you know, just for the >> make sure that it's minor Adams and I to my child name. Right now where we're at is we want to end this problem. Okay. Problem. >> Well, it seems like there is. You know, it seems like it's not. >> Who's the reason why we got called here? >> Who's I right? Her me. >> I mean, you guys were both yelling at each other when we me or her. I asked for a police report. Why don't you get a police report? >> I already told you that we're going to have one document. What else? >> I can't physically give you a copy of >> It's state law that you're supposed to give me a copy of there's no there's I can give you now. You're being right. >> I'm not being protocol. Where in state protocol is it? Okay. So, like I said, there's a foyer, okay? Freedom of Information Act, okay? Once we generate the report and get everything going, you could foil this report, okay? And then you could get the whole copy yourself. All right? So, that being said, clearly there's a conflict here, okay? We don't want to have to kill him back out here or someone else, you know, >> you don't have to come back out here. She >> So, what's the what's the solution for tonight? >> You came out here and that's just that. That's just that. She has a problem. That's just that. I have nowhere to go. Me or my child. And so, that's just that. What I'm not going to do is leave my child here with her. She had that's a problem. So she can stay in her little 50 ft or 25 ft away from me and I'll stay away from her. I'm here doing something productive. >> I'm not saying I'm not saying you're not. We can switch off. >> You got No, we're not going to play shop cop. Okay. What we're going to do, you're just being ridiculous. >> I'm not You're doing the same thing. >> No, I'm trying to talk to you. I'm trying to talk to you and and you're just kind of insulting me now for no reason for no reason. You just called me. >> That's what we're doing to ask. >> So she has We're not going to speak with her. Okay. Basically, she has she she has uh nowhere to go, but she said she's willing to not speak with her for the rest of the night. >> Okay. >> Yeah. She's going to pull this card. >> The situation worsened when the mother tried to prevent her daughter from speaking with [music] the officers, requiring the officers to step in. >> I am going to pull that car. You don't want me to talk to your partner. You're both on. >> We're not We're not We're not going to do a shop of coping, okay? You already spoke with me about everything like that. Okay. >> Why can't I speak to your other officer? >> I'll talk to you. Can you talk to her? >> No. >> I don't want to talk to her about what happened. >> She's a minor and I'm her mother. I do not want her speaking. >> I believe she saw something. >> I believe she did not. She's a minor and she's my child. I am her parent and guardian. I said no. >> Can you tell me what happened? >> I'm your parent and guardian. I said no. >> Oh, she's not even heard that she saw something. >> Pardon? >> She's not even heard that she saw something. >> She didn't tell you that. >> She snotted at me. >> No, she didn't. >> No, she didn't. >> No, she didn't. >> It's okay. >> So, you want to tell us what happened? >> Your mom how many times? How often do your mother hit you >> is what he's trying to ask you. >> Nope. I'm asking her how many times >> I don't her. So ask her the correct questions. Ask her you. Was it just one, two, three? >> Was grandma as well? >> You're a liar. >> Pull my hair. >> You're a liar. >> When you when you said you pulled your hair, what did she know? >> Okay. Did you like fall back or anything like that? No. >> So when she pulled on her hair, just so I understand. Okay. Was it like, "Hey, come here." Or was like a come here and she like kind of yanked on you. So my last question for you, man, I I know she said she you pull on her hair. How hard did you pull on her hair? Just be honest with us. >> Even small conflicts can affect a child's sense of security and trust. Parents are legally responsible for how they handle such situations. >> Is there a reason? uh for talking back to me as I told them no and a command as a parent. >> Okay. So I know you said you didn't pull her hair out at all but why do we have questions from you? >> Why do we have a whole question from you please? >> Why do we have a whole strand of hair being very very very forceful? >> Here's question. Why is her hair on the floor? Cuz usually you pulling someone's hair is I want to say it's parent discipline. Like to pull someone's hair >> American and I'm braiding her hair. It slipped out. I'm braiding her hair. I'm Africanamean and I'm braiding my hair. >> I understand that. But we're talking about this hair piece that's over here cuz there's a hair being pulled. The hair came out. >> I'm doing her hair and it slipped out. I'm braiding her hair and it slipped out. >> Apparent discipline thing. I don't think anything with would be like involved. >> Did she tell you that? >> Yes, she did. She did not tell you that. >> Yes, she did. >> No, she did. >> All right, you're under arrest. Stand up. Back. >> Let me put on some shoes. >> Yeah, we'll put your shoes on. High five. >> That's where they want to stay. Shoes, please. >> All right. Hold on a second. Okay. Where are the shoes at? >> In the room. >> Which room? >> In that room. >> In this room. >> Yes. >> Where? Uh, we're at In the shoes. >> All right. Can I put on some underwear? >> Yeah, it's perfectly fine. Just hold on a second. >> My hands are handcuffed. Let me put on some underwear. >> We're not We're not doing all this. I have no underwear on. Take me into custody. >> Well, sorry you don't have under How are you supposed to put on underwear at this point? Cuz you're in custody >> with grabbing them and putting them on. >> You can do that with your hands behind your back and cuffs. >> Can you uncuff me so I can put them on? You're going to take me with no underwear on? Is your camera on? So So you're going to take me to jail with no underwear on as a male officer? That's harassment. >> Harass me shoes. Okay, >> that's not It's cold outside, sir. Let me Can I get my gym shoes? >> Where are the gym shoes? And what shoes are that? Are they those condos right there? >> Going in here. Flip the light so I can see. >> I can show your flashlight, sir. >> Where in here are the shoes? >> He's asking me a question. >> Okay. >> I didn't ask you to come in here. I'm saying >> I'm trying to show you right there in the corner. You're not looking with your flashlight. >> These black ones. >> Step back out, >> mother. I don't care. I'LL GET RIGHT OUT. >> The police remain calm, handling the situation according to regulations while protecting the child's rights and respecting the parents role. Sorry, >> my showing your camera. >> I just put the [ __ ] Put the shoes on, John. I I'll come don't come on. >> What about a jacket? Am I not allowed a jacket? >> I'll pull my car up here. >> I don't want to. >> I can't put that on. My hands are pocket. >> That's what we're going to put on here. >> Your idea. >> You can leave that in the pocket. The ID. Everything else you can take out the pocket. [snorts] >> Tori, put the shoe on me. >> We'll get her in your car and then scare me. The mother was taken to the station for legal processing. >> This one say what? >> I didn't say anything. >> Okay. I have a a device in my vag area that's a federal device. >> That's fine. >> It's a 911 call. >> It's a what? >> It's a 911 Paul. >> What does that mean? >> It's a a device federal agents are watching. Just to let you know. >> Sound like a firearm or anything? It's like >> uh it's a a cigar pole for 911. We have Do Are you familiar with the 9/11 Second City thing or New York or anything like that? >> Not so sure. You take a city. Mhm. >> What is it? >> It's a cigar. >> Uh cigar? >> Yes. It's for 9/11. It was entered in uh from the city of Chicago. I don't know if it'll beep or anything like that, but it's in my vaginal area. >> Is that something you're able to take out? >> No. >> No. >> It's from JB Chris. >> Do like this thing to make sure like codes or anything like show them. >> If not, that's fine. The mother faced a battery charge. In Indiana, the maximum penalty can be up to one year in jail and a [music] $5,000 fine. The story serves as a strong reminder of how parents manage emotions and resolve family [music] conflicts. Discipline isn't wrong, but the way it's applied determines whether it supports a child's growth or creates negative consequences. [music] Some lessons aren't found in textbooks, but in real life moments that leave us reflecting. These stories remind us that a single lapse in judgment by an adult can shape a child's early years in lasting ways. And sometimes the most responsible way to show love is not by rushing to fix everything, but by slowing down, thinking carefully, and choosing wisely from the very beginning.
