Stop. >> My god. >> Oh my goodness. >> You're ridiculous. >> Not every problem begins with a sudden moment. Some start with a small misstep [music] and quietly grow over time. >> Don't touch me. >> Where will we go? >> Stand right here. I want to go as a bad guy. >> Today's stories are a reminder a child's safety should never follow passing emotions. >> When adults lose their composure, children are often the ones forced to adapt just to get through the moment. >> Where do you guys live at? Do you know >> where we're from or where we live? >> Where are you guys living at now? On August 5th, 2024, Ohio officers approached an area near a football practice after receiving a report about a mother who appeared unsteady while leaving with a young child in a red minivan. Officers arrived and asked the vehicle to stop for a safety check. At first, the mother repeatedly argued, asked many questions, and did not follow basic instructions right away. >> You own. Um, yeah, I'm the owner. I don't have any of their stuff in the car, though. >> Okay, you're suspended. >> Yeah, suspended and expired, right? It shouldn't have been expired. >> Is there any meth cracker or cocaine in the vehicle? >> No. >> For no reason, my narcotic certified K9 would alert to the presence of any one of those things. >> No. Uh, we just at football practition. >> Um, I just live right down this street and we couldn't find Mariah. My phone. Where do you live? >> We live on Studentville Pike Road. We just moved there like two months ago. >> Okay. I'm gonna have you hop out with me. Okay. You don't have any firearms in the vehicle, anything like that. Obviously, you got kids in there. >> Just leave everything. >> My lighter. >> That's a lighter. >> That's a lighter. Yeah. Set everything down in the vehicle for me. Leave everything in the vehicle for me. >> Yeah. I would >> including whatever. We're not lighting a cigarette right now. Just leave everything in the vehicle. Leave everything in the vehicle. >> Okay. I don't understand what >> So, put everything back in the vehicle except you. Everything in your hands, put it in the vehicle and then you step out of the vehicle. >> Okay. >> Including the cops. >> Oh, just just not. >> All right. And then step with my kids in the car. >> Step to the front of my patrol vehicle. >> You're going to search the car with my kids in the car. >> You need to listen to me. >> I just want to know what's going on. >> Stand to the front of my patrol vehicle now. >> I just want to know what's going on. Stand to the front of the patrol vehicle now or you're going to get in a pair of handcuffs. Stand right there right now. >> Listen to me. Stop reaching in the car. Stop reaching in the car. Stop. >> On the ground. >> What are you doing? >> What are you? >> Stop reaching in the car. >> My kids. >> Yeah. >> Where are these guys? >> No. Please just stop in front of my kids. Stop in front of me. Please, you please. Please. >> You're about to get dog bit if you don't quit. >> Please. >> This is your one warning that you're going to get. >> Please put your hands behind your back. >> Let me go. >> We at football. Football. >> We at football. >> What the? >> Keep it up. You're going to get tased. Keep it You're going to get tas kids are screaming and like, are you serious? >> Keep it up. You're going to get tased. >> I don't understand. >> Behind your back. >> They are. I'm not a female. Like, that is ridiculous. >> Yo, I need some representation here. This is ridiculous. >> One in custody, one resistance. Get up, please. >> They are really yo, >> let's go. >> Why are you guys all my kids? Ow. All over my own medicine. The pizza subject. Pizza subject. my own damn medicine. [snorts] >> Get in the car. >> Over my own damn medicine. >> The situation with a mother was brought under control, but the children had not yet calmed down. The sudden incident left them anxious and in tears. >> Perfect. Where will we go? >> Stand right here. Hey, Madison's on it. Who plays football? >> That's me. >> You know Coach Madison? >> Yes. >> He's on his way down. Okay. Okay, guys. She's got no fighting with her. >> I already I don't know if you copied. There's foot. >> Oh, nope. You got extra door? >> I do. Feel like I've searched this car before and it was for the same thing. Improper display. Well, last time it was cruising for the stop. There's a pipe. Wait, no, never mind. There was Justin. Who do you guys live with on Sumo Pike? >> Oh, we live with my two sisters. We're 18 and 17. >> Anybody else live with you guys? >> No. >> Okay. It's okay, guys. Okay. >> Our dad is a cute. >> Okay. >> It's okay. It's okay. >> Okay, sweetie. You're going to be okay. >> We need to find the pipe. >> It's got to be somewhere. Check the ground around where we were at. Uh just to get the dope. >> You're going to go home. >> Did you copy some of the traffic? >> Yeah. I appreciate. >> You're good. You're good. >> During the assessment, officers determined that the mother was not in a suitable condition to continue caring for the children at that time. So, they began looking for temporary placement options. This proved difficult because contact information was not readily available in the system. I just knew she dove in what she was going for cuz she just said that. >> Oh yeah. Yeah. [snorts] I don't know what the else she was running trying to grab for. She threw a purse. So check the ground over there. You know, >> I'm not trying to say that would have thrown something. You know what I mean? But I wouldn't want mom get in trouble either. You know what I mean? I got a little spatula that they all have. >> Oh, here we go. >> I hate chicken. >> I'm not trying to like taser or do anything crazy. >> Oh, no. >> It's just like dude fight. I'm really not trying to mom in front of freaking >> She's contacting CPS. She's going to see if they want to call us or if they just want to come out. >> Yeah. What are you doing as far as OVI? She's definitely >> Well, no. I mean, on top of it, does it go with the child endangering? >> Well, I'm looking at >> Yeah. I'm saying I mean she's obviously high as a kite. >> I can I can I can hit her with it and go off of the >> behavior. >> Behavior and >> be careful. more like >> to wait on TV. Do you know >> where we're from or where we live? >> Where are you guys living at now? All right. >> And I'm going to walk over here for a second. Is that okay? Let me shut the >> back. >> What's up, buddy? >> Nothing. >> All right. Thank you guys. Give me a couple minutes. I'll come back with you. Okay. >> Taj, what did you say? Your sister's boyfriend's laughing. What happened? uh she as high as I call you. >> Oh, that's a good sale, too. Yeah. Yeah. >> Um we're trying to get an emergency contact. >> Okay. >> None of the emergency contact on ours. This >> works. >> Yeah. >> So, it's a nightmare. >> Um do you need one of my guys to go out and see if we can get >> It's up to you. Like I said, we're we at least needed to notify children services, but apparently we can't get a hold of anybody. >> Go figure. >> Oh, yeah. We got her all ready for just the resisting and child. So, >> she's >> Oh, yeah. >> She doesn't even bring their kids water to practice. So, >> really? >> Yeah. >> Wow. >> Um, is there anything you want me to do with these guys? >> I don't check with him and see what he wants to do. >> Yeah, we got Baker coming for that. Like I said, biggest thing was waiting on CPS cuz we were seeing if they just wanted to come right here instead of phone call, but let me >> Can I get moving out of there? >> Yeah. You mind? >> Nope. Is it just the one kid? >> Uh, there should be two. Can I get the football gear out of there? I'm not going to take it. There's like literally every compartment ever in this damn thing for whatever reason. Still not as good as the uh Land Rover. No, no, that thing had a hidden compartment. Without hidden compartment, this piss me off. I really wanted to get up. This one. You good if I remove this then? >> Yeah. >> Hey guys, thank you. >> Thank you. If I talk to them and they say there's more football equipment or cheer equipment, can I get it? >> Yeah. Yeah, it doesn't. The car is I mean it's dirty, but there ain't much in it, so I don't I think that's it. >> Okay. >> Yeah. And this was really trying to save face in front of the kids. >> Yeah, >> that's literally how this started was just get out of the vehicle. We're going to do field sobriety. Then we kept grabbing stuff trying to get it out of the vehicle. It's like, look, put it in the car. Get out of the vehicle. I just want to know for my kids you're going to run your dog a hit and I'm not telling you that. Just step in front of my car and then she dove back in the car and I'm like, "Nope, we're not doing that." And I grabbed her and she started pulling. I'm like, "Well, here we go." >> Um, you want statements from my board members like >> Yeah. Yeah. >> If we know who they were. >> Yeah. and then I'll I'll do the A1A on it and just call it a deal. >> As officers conducted a check of the vehicle, the children's grandmother hurried to the scene, comforting both her daughter and the kids. The presence of a familiar family member helped ease the tension. >> All right, ma'am. >> That charge that comes up, that's 10 years old. >> What charge? >> Whatever you Why you guys did all that? >> Okay. So when we call her, it won't go through. Do you know why? >> They're shut off. But she is home right now. Okay. Give me a couple minutes. I'm going to turn some air on. Okay. >> Yep. See you guys. >> She just needs to calm down. >> Oh, we got EMS coming. >> Are you kidding me? >> Nope. >> Inside the vehicle, the mother continued showing signs of distress, requiring officers to use firmer guidance measures. When informed about the related violations, she said she would handle everything, which further raised concerns about her condition. Ready? You want to swing your feet out first or you want her out? >> Nope. Just feet. All right, man. Swing your just your feet out. >> Sit down. I slid cuz I'm ready. >> Just your feet. Both feet. In court, she did not contest a seat belt violation, but pleaded not guilty to most of the remaining charges. The case was later transferred to another court and she was released on bond set at $50,000. There the booster seat violation, expired registration, expired license, seat belt violation, and expired license plate charges were dismissed. She was convicted on the remaining charges along with two additional [music] counts. Possession of co and tampering with evidence. You're drinking in the car next to him. >> No, I'm not. >> You tossed out two beer cans right in front of me at the light. On April 12th, 2024, officers received a report about someone taking an adult onlyly beverage from a restaurant. After getting a description of the person involved, they stopped a black vehicle for a routine check. At that moment, had everyone cooperated, the situation likely would have ended within minutes. As a result, the car became an unsuitable space for the children. >> I don't know. Probably. Anything illegal in the car? Any uh anything other than boots in the car? >> Step on. Let's go over there. Did someone get your ID? >> Yeah, someone discovered. >> Can you kind of tell me what's going on? >> Uh, a little too much to drink. >> Everyone, >> everyone. >> I see the car come flying out of Muster. So, I follow her. Two twisted tea cans fly out the window. Then I stop her. I walk up to the car. I'm talking to her and the guy in the back's drinking a Modell. And he goes, "You like me?" I said, "All right, let me get your ID." He said, "But why? This is legal. I'll drink it in the car." I said, "Stop out of the car. You want to step out of the car?" She comes flying out and trying to grab me. So I grab her, put her in cuffs, put her in my car. You all good? >> Yeah. >> You break that, you're going to get charged. >> Let me out of here. >> Just leave it. >> He breaks it. He gets a felonies. >> Break. >> Who? So, you got How time did you guys get to We got there about like 4. Yeah. >> This is just people ignoring me. >> What? >> Let me talk to my son. I'm his mother, not you. >> Okay, we're not doing that right now. >> Want me to talk to me? Call my son down. >> Shouldn't be drinking in the car driving. >> I was not drinking in my car driving her. I had to put that on God. >> Okay. >> You believe in Jesus? Yeah. >> No, you don't. Mommy, I'm going to tear down my song. >> Put your knee in the car. >> How long it going to be until my son starts crying. >> A little bit longer. Put your knee in the car. >> How long? I want to know. >> I don't know. Put your knee in the car. >> I want to know. >> It wasn't until they arrived at the station that things [music] gradually settled down. Officers then completed the necessary procedures and conducted a condition assessment for the mother. >> My son. >> He's coming back to the station with us. You're under arrest. >> What? >> Couple things. >> I want to know what I've done anything wrong. Where's my my boyfriend doing? >> Which one's your boyfriend? >> Guy. >> Oh, he's fine. That's all we're doing. >> Take your handcuffs off, but you can't act up. Okay. >> All right. So, first things first. >> I need my mom. >> Have you been arrested before? >> No, cuz I've done nothing wrong. >> Okay. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court of law or other proceedings. Do you understand? >> The fifth. I've done nothing wrong. >> Okay. I'm going to have you step forward a little bit here. Do you have any eye problems or abnormalities? >> Explain. >> Any problems with your eyes? >> I have glasses. Yeah. >> Just glasses. No like diseases or anything like that. You're not blind, right? >> No. And I'm not going to jail either. So I don't ring my knees. I'm not going to jail. >> How's your general health? >> Better than yours. Could you try and try to arrest me? What are you trying to do? Are you stupid? >> Okay. Can you just put your glasses on hold of my car? >> Oh, you [ __ ] I know. >> I know. Come right here. >> No, this is stupid. >> You're going to put your feet together and put your hands down your sides. Just like this. I want you to keep your head still and follow the movement of my finger with your eyes only. >> I know. So, we're done. >> I'm going to stand next to you. Okay. You're going to place your left foot on the line. Imagine a line right from here to the door. When I say begin, you're going to take nine heel to toe steps on the line. Do you understand? >> Yeah. >> Okay, you can start. 1 2 3 4 7 8 9. Return. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. >> Okay. All right. You're going to put your feet together and put your arms down at your sides. This is the This is the last one. When I tell you to, you're going to raise either foot, your left or your right, approximately 6 in off the ground. And you're going to count out loud in the following manner. 1,00 1,002 1,00 3 until you're told to stop. Until I tell you to stop. You got to keep that leg straight. Okay. >> Waiting. You can start. >> I missed starting. >> You got to look down at your foot and count. >> You don't look at your foot. That's why you need to see fall. You got to look away. >> Train that leg out. >> Hope gymnastics. >> All right. Well done. We're going to go in. Okay. You're going to get fingerprinted. You're going to get photographed. And then you can call whoever you want. >> You're saying I'm going to jail for this? >> This is just lock up. >> Are we getting locked up for what? The woman could face [music] charges including DUI and open container violation, obstructing a peace [music] officer, failure to comply with lawful orders, disorderly conduct, and child. While the man could face charges of obstructing a peace officer, failure to comply with lawful [music] orders and disorderly conduct. In your view, if these violations are confirmed, what would be an appropriate outcome in this situation? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. In many real life situations, the line between a mistake and a tragic outcome can be separated by what seems like a very small decision. >> So, you have a warrant out of King County. >> On July 12th, 2025, officers received a call from a neighbor reporting that two young children were alone in a car late at night with the engine still running and no adult present. Officers arrived quickly and noted that the engine and air conditioning were on. The children, meanwhile, had no idea they had just been in a potentially unsafe situation. >> Got your phone back. Don't worry. >> Yeah, they're just talking to grandma. So, grandma's going to come pick you guys up. Okay. And then you guys have to go home where all your toys are, right? You guys getting tired? >> Yeah. Me, too. >> Why do policees have fun? >> Because sometimes there's bad guys with guns. >> And it's trying to gun. >> Yeah, we don't we don't want to do that though. >> Toy guns are fun. >> Like water guns. Those are my favorite. >> Got water guns. >> I want the water guns that >> I want to the water gun at the back and quickly and I will quickly get in the house and lock the door. >> All right. >> She just basically left them here and left. >> Yeah, I guess. So, what we're going to do, Grandma's coming. We're going to take these guys. We're going to get FD rolling just to get them checked out. Wait for grandma. Grandma leaves with them. We're calling VCFs, letting them know grandma. And uh if she shows up, we're busy obviously for Chad and the running is the car running. >> Are there keys in this car? >> Do you guys have keys for the car? >> Yeah, >> the keys is right there. >> Oh, okay. >> I told him just get here and we'll just talk. >> Yeah. So, we'll get FD. you want to get FD rolling to get them checked out which they'll just you know do their normal thing here and then um like I said so grandma's going to take them he'll call DCFS letting her know the whole situation she shows up we arrest her and we'll go from there so that car just shifted in the parking gard >> Hold on guys no no just turn the car off >> have the kid unlock it >> I think your mom was trying to call. We want to talk to her county. >> They said this is the friend's house that she's going to be here. >> Do they know which where? >> No. >> So, she's saying that the mom could possibly be in the friend's house in one of these. >> This went to the second floor. This comes back. >> Well, I think it's 2 A. >> But she said she didn't listen to 2A. Yeah, that's why they >> Oh. Oh, that's why they called us. Okay, that makes sense. >> There's She's saying that she went inside to her friend's place. So, just knock on the doors. >> They live in 2A. >> Okay. >> Okay. I got mom and daughter information. >> Yeah, that's fine. >> Um, so if you need any questions to make So, this is their parking spot, but I make more problem for tonight cuz I'm going to be taking this back somewhere else. >> They can call them the thing. >> Okay. I can tell them. No, cuz I as I said we cannot to because the private property, but whoever's over here take him. >> Yeah. So, since 10 10:26. Okay. And mom went that way. >> How she looks like? >> No, she had like a orangeish kind of sweatshirt, long sleeve, but that was it. Oh, we could sound her and get a picture. But here comes FD. That'll draw some attention. 20 county. FD is 23. Have you guys ever seen an ambulance before? >> Yeah. All right. >> Only the police. Well, now you get to meet some firemen or paramedics. Okay. >> So, mom left at 10:26. Left them in the car. >> We got here at what time? 11. >> Yeah. >> Almost. Yeah. The car was on. >> Some air. >> Um, so >> the car was on. >> Yeah, the air is on. >> Okay. So they they left you with air. >> Yeah. And if the car is off, that means there's no air. >> But are are you okay? >> Yeah. >> How about you, buddy? Are you okay? >> I got >> You guys didn't see whose car this is, did you? >> Well, no. We just saw a little kid there earlier for like >> You didn't call and tell us. >> No, it's cuz we thought their mom was like coming back. >> But they were smiling at us and they had a phone. >> Is that your car? >> Yeah. >> Hey, you want to step out here cuz you you left your kids in the car? Yep. Put your shoes on. She's going to come out. I'll pat her down. You handcuff her. >> But we're going to take her to my car. We're not doing it. >> Want to shake my hand? >> Well, let's see. Let's see her. CQ. >> Okay. >> Officers continued verifying the situation by speaking with people nearby to better understand what had happened. >> Thanks, guys. >> We just saw the kids with a little phone, so we thought they were like just going to like >> they were talking to people. So, >> yeah, they're all right. Yeah, we thought his mom was going to come. It's like it would be a common thing like the mom would go in to get money. >> Yeah, we run in and come back out. Yeah, I got you. >> We just came back as we saw him. So, but like he doesn't have charge or anything. So, like >> and you're still outside without a without a charge phone. >> I got the key. >> Oh, his mom is still your phone is in charge. You can't leave the house. >> Hey, mom. >> The mother returned and spoke with authorities once the timeline of her absence became clear. Only then did she begin paying closer attention to her children's condition and emotions. >> What's your name? Lilia. Lily, come talk with me about my car real quick. Okay. They're going to get checked out, but we got to talk to you. >> Come over by my car. >> Go on the other side of there so we can have a conversation. >> Yes. >> All right, Mom. What's going on? >> What's going on? The problem is you parked the car at 10:26 and haven't been back out. That's a problem. Okay. So, they're going to get checked out by FD. Okay. All right. I need to put your hands on my face. >> Can I put this stuff in my car? >> You can put on the hook. And is my car going to be good? >> We're going to have a conversation after we talk with the fire department. Okay. Let me have an extra phone. >> Oh, yeah. FD might want to talk to you. I'm not sure about your kids. Has this happened before? >> So, I'm just going to thump it on my kids. >> So, you have a choice. Grandma >> or DCFS comes and picks up. >> You're going to be arrested. >> Okay. Because they've been in there since 10:26. No reason why we know that. Somebody has a video of you parking the car and you walking out. >> Union Robert, >> you left them in a running. >> They could push pedals, shift it. Who knows what could happen? That's a problem, huh? >> I hope you understand that. So, if you need to make up with your parents so that you have some type of a support system or something, you can't leave them in the car at 10:30 at night. My mom can come to the market. >> We talked to you about she on her way. She Yeah, she's going to come and take you uh take the kids. Um obviously DCFS is going to be notified. >> So, what about my car? >> Well, that's somebody's parking spot. going to be able to take him home. >> I don't know if two people are coming. Your mom and your dad. I don't know. We'll we'll figure that out in a minute. Let me see if he wants to talk. Where's your car? >> The situation became more complicated when a records check showed that the mother was also connected to a prior legal matter in another county. >> Take a lead out to get some information about the kid's name and date of birth before you guys. >> Yeah. So, we have all their info. Do you want to talk to her about anything else? >> No. So, you have all the kids? >> Yeah, we have all their kids. She's got a warrant, so she's going to go. Grandparents are coming to take them. >> Yeah, we got that. Um, you guys are fine with that. So, as long as we can get that, we can do a quick report and we're we're going to still do a child service. >> Yeah. Awesome. So, you have a warrant out of King County? >> Why didn't you tell me that? I didn't ask, but All right. So, obviously you're going to be going to jail tonight. See a judge in the morning and then what was I don't even know what's it for. The warrant. >> Traffic court. >> Okay. All right. So, they'll end up giving you a court date. The whole thing with DCFS, I don't know if you've ever have you dealt with them before, no issues before. I mean, that's a good thing, you know, but they're still going to want to show up at your house. You know, they're going to do some visits and make sure that everything's good. Okay. As far as the car, do you need any keys off of this or somebody will be home when you get out? >> Let me give them to your mom. >> Could take the one off the little this little thing. I could take this. >> That's all you need? Those house? >> Yeah. your wipes and your money. What do you want to do with the money? Um, >> you want to put this stuff in your car? >> Yeah. Can I >> put it in your car? >> Cuz if you know what my bond will be. >> No. They might be able to tell you at lockup, but I don't know. Guess I'll put back in your car. >> Can I go look at my kids? >> So, what? Yeah. When they're done, let them get checked out. Um, I don't really want them I don't know about them seeing you in handcuffs. Um, but once they're cleared, you want to peek in kind of thing. Say, you know, you got to go, whatever you want to tell them. Okay. Um, I'm fine with that. Okay. >> I might go to at least move my car like to the regular. >> It'll be up to your mom. Okay. This is kind of a big deal. I don't know. You know, 5 minutes might be I ran in to grab something. That's still trouble, but it's not okay. >> I'm glad she's okay. glad she was okay. You know what I mean? Like I hate when people sit there and lecture. I mean, I shouldn't have. You know what I mean? >> Yeah. Like >> the mother was charged with child instrument. Under Illinois law, she could face up to one year in prison and a $2,500 fine. Children always need the presence, care, and protection of adults. Sometimes, even a rush decision made without bad intentions can place them in situations they are not yet able to protect themselves from. This situation began with a box of cereal and ended with a difficult lesson about emotional control. >> Never come back. >> Don't come back. >> I will never come back. >> I'm dead. I'm going to the hospital. >> Don't come back. >> I'm not good. >> On the afternoon of July 29th, 2023, officers received an emergency call from a grandmother. She was concerned for her own safety and that of her grandchildren as her daughter was causing disadvantage in the bathroom while in a distressed state. The cause, at first glance, seemed minor. Two children had eaten a box of cereal their mother believed was meant for herself. However, this was only the breaking point after days of pressure, conflict, and unresolved emotional struggles. >> Hi. >> Good. Where's Kimberly at? >> Does she want to go to jail? >> He says she want to go to jail. >> Hey, what you doing, girl? >> Look at here. Look at this stuff behind the house and I don't want to hurt nobody. Okay, >> y'all take her on this time cuz you done been here before. Have you been here? >> Yeah, I've dealt with Kimberly a bunch. >> She not on my leave. Take her own. >> Okay. >> She ain't had no money. She don't get nothing. >> Can you go into the living room for me? >> She don't get nothing. But look at the bathroom. >> I'm going to look. Will you go into the living room for me? >> What is that? >> Ma'am, >> will you go into the living room for that like I'm getting >> What is this? >> Huh? >> What is this? the shower crane down. >> Okay. >> The stuff fell on the truck. >> Okay. >> Bought a box of cereal. >> Okay. >> A box of cereal. I could I didn't know that was your box. >> I'm tired of somewhere. No more money. >> She take my money cuz she know this. >> Are you trying to leave? >> Are you trying to leave? >> No. >> Okay. What are you trying to do? >> I don't know. She keep trying to lock me up. Ask her. She got to see what she did. Can you go on into the living room, please? Thank you. Why are you packing a toothpaste? >> I'm leaving. >> Okay. >> He said, "I call the police and I can't stay here no more." >> Okay. >> Call the police. >> You want to go to the hospital? >> I don't care where you don't care. He called the police. >> I know. >> I'll go to the hospital. >> Have you been taking your meds like you're supposed to? >> Yes, ma'am. >> When's the last time you took them? >> Every month. >> You just take them every month to go to Advantage and get the shot? >> Yes, ma'am. >> When's the last time you had it? >> Mom, can you please let me out of here? >> We're going to When's the last time you had your shot? When the last time I had my shot, >> I don't have no shot. I don't >> You said you take your meds once a month. >> Okay. When's the last time you took it? >> Can you please just let me out? >> Yes, that's going to happen. But I need you to answer some questions so I can get you some help. >> Once a month. I take my >> When are you due for another one? >> I'll do it once a month. Um once a month. >> Um every month. >> Okay. So it's almost August. So when are you due for it? Like what what day out of the month do you take your shot or take your meds? >> Um every month. >> Right. What? What day? >> Every month. Well, I don't know what day. >> Is it like the first of the month? >> The 15th? >> I get my other stuff. >> What other stuff? >> Well, if you're going to the hospital, then you're probably not going to be packing everything. >> Efforts to keep distance [music] between those involved prove difficult due to the mother's intense reactions, requiring officers to step in to help stabilize the situation. >> Kimberly, I'm not going to >> no out of here. Stop. Not going nowhere. >> Turn around. >> Not going to knock you. >> Turn it down. >> Hey, stop. Stop. >> Take your own out of here. Don't come back. >> Never come back. >> Don't come back. >> I will never come back in the hospital. >> Don't come back. >> Yeah. >> Kimberly, stop it. >> Stop. >> Yeah. Yeah. I need to be spread your feet out further. You need to spread your feet so I can search you. You got anything in your bra? >> No. >> Turn. Have a seat. You're related to her, right? >> Okay. >> I know she just got this. >> Where'd she come back from? Me and her went to Burlington and then Kroger. My mom and nephew stay in Arbor Ridge. I know he couldn't have been brought her home. Somebody boo. >> She broke some stuff in there. And then while I was there trying to get her out to go to the hospital, she threatened her mama told her she was going to beat her ass and knock the TV off the head. >> She did that and y'all look it up. She got mad and that's what she did. And this bigger TV. >> Yeah. >> She got she got mad and called y'all on us and it's on whatever y'all record. That's what she ask. >> I'm going to handle her stuff. >> After things had temporarily calmed and officers spoke with another family member. They went back inside the home to check on the elderly grandmother and the two children. >> Okay. Is the TV broke? >> I don't think so. She did. >> She did what? >> No, she >> Okay. Yeah, I'm not taking all that long. I'm going to take her purse. >> Um, so the TV still works, though. Yes. >> Okay. You want me to help you lift it? >> Yeah. All right. >> So, what was the fight over? >> Mhm. >> Who own my cereal? >> Mhm. >> I don't know. kill her daughter soon. >> Mhm. >> So my son came so he was out of town. He's out of town. He be back tomorrow. And so I said, "Well, I didn't know about I didn't know they was your serious." That's what she blows up about. >> Okay. She needs to learn a lesson. >> She She's okay. She's more than welcome to go with you, but we just want to make sure the child at the end of the day is okay. Do you need a ride over there? Do you want to drive over there? >> I can drive my truck. >> Okay. >> The child was then handed over to the father and the challenges the mother was facing were also clarified. >> They were supposed to be playing with their kids. That's the call we got. >> Can I get that in writing please? >> It's on camera. So we we got we Yeah, it's got to be documented because obviously there's children involved stuff like that. So, you know, we had a concerned person that came over hysterical because she said she saw your girlfriend, wife, whatever she is carrying the baby like she said like a rag doll is how she described it. So, she tried to stop and be like, you know, do you need assistance? Do you need help? Blah, whatever. She followed the she tried to go through her garage and then saw the baby out here on all of by himself. So, that's the call we got. >> We appreciate you coming. >> Thank you very much. He has a cell phone in his hand. >> Okay. >> But I tried knocking on the door. Door kind of opened up a little bit right here. But he ran back to this house. I don't even know if he belongs here. >> Okay. Is he inside? >> Yeah, he's right here. >> Hey, bud. You doing all right? I'm officer car. >> He doesn't talk. Probably about two. Do >> you mind if I go get going, officer? >> Yeah. Thank you. >> Okay. Thank you. >> But yeah, you said you saw you saw him down here by the little pes down here and he's about ready to cross the intersection. I'm like, dude, you're going to get run over. I mean, like a car. I asked him, I'm like, "Are you supposed to be out here? You look awful young." And then he just got out of the little pipes and run all the way up the street and he has like paint on him and >> Okay. So, I don't know what's >> You saw him down there. You asked him if he was okay and then he ran back up here. >> Tried to get into the front door. >> Okay. >> Front door is open, but he I don't know what's going on. >> Okay. >> As officers approached the house, they saw a child, but no adults around. They knocked several times, but no one responded. >> You doing all right, bud? You're all covered in paint, dude. Knuckles, what you doing in there? You got your You got your mom's phone. Mommy here. But he was out playing around and front doors open. Smell it now. >> What's your name, buddy? >> How are you? >> What? >> Are you ready for what? >> Oh, no. >> He lives He lives here. He lives here. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> I just talked to the neighbor. He IDed him. >> Oh, you did. >> Pants live here. >> Okay. >> The door's cracked. >> That door's cracked. >> No, this one. >> I might Let's see if we can get with the sergeant to see. >> Yeah, that's what I was going to do. >> Sergeant. >> Hello. Inside? >> Uh yes, >> he is. >> You sure? >> Yeah. Yeah, he's up riding around right now. >> Okay. Well, he's out here. >> He got out. All right. He was He was down the street actually. >> Oh my god. >> The UPS driver stopped stopped and tried to get a hold of him. All right. Hey, he's he's going around to the other door. What the >> Get him back outside. >> Okay. Yeah. I have no idea at all how that [crying] happened. I was in his room picking up a little bit and he was just in the living room running around and I didn't hear [crying] any doors open or anything. >> You said your wife's inside? Yeah, she uh has been feeling great recently, so she's just getting [crying] some extra sleep. >> You mind if I speak to her as well? How long's she been coming? >> Uh late last night. Like he was asleep when I got home. I I got home from work and I mean he did this while I was at work. My wife's [crying] handicapped. She isn't >> really said your wife what? >> She's handicapped and she can't really get up on her own like she can and her health [screaming] was kind of fired out last night. >> [crying] >> She let me know that she couldn't get up here, give him a bath or anything, so I was going to give him a bath as soon as I [crying] got up. >> You guys got power and water to the house and everything. [screaming and laughter] >> Yeah. Yeah. Hey, hey, how long's he been in that diaper? >> It looks like I haven't been able haven't [crying] been able to get uh get him dressed yet or get him changed yet. >> What the officers observed prompted them to conduct a more thorough inspection. Where was he found? Kid down on the street corner. Middle of the intersection kind of. >> He said on he was on Cooper down at the end of the street. You have like a little tight mic kind of. >> He does. >> That's where he was in down at the end of the street. >> Yeah. I had no idea honestly because the mud room door is locked twice. It's a lock on the handle as well. Same with this door. But uh I believe this one unlocked because it has like a kn like I unlocked it when I was coming to [crying] you guys. But it was uh it has like a child lock handle on it >> cuz he was found out at the end of the street and he ran back came and got into that front that front area >> that little stoop and this front door was open or this side door was open. >> How old is he? >> Uh he'll be four this year. >> He's four. Okay. >> If you just want to hang tight for a sec, I'll be right back with you. Okay. Let me talk with the weather. >> Their inspection indicated that certain areas needed improvement to maintain a safe and healthy environment for the children. >> I'm going to get on the phone with DCFS. >> Yeah, cuz I mean there's a horrible >> There's a really bad odor coming from the house, too. There's diaper covered in paint. Dad didn't know he was out. >> Dad said Dad said he's been out for an hour. >> He said he's your guys's only child. You just have a couple other pets inside. He said, "Yeah, he did." >> Okay. >> Any idea how long he was out of the house? >> Um, >> I mean, the other first officer on scene is knocking on the door for a while. Couldn't get anyone to answer. I assumed you only answered this time cuz I got pretty loud. >> Yeah. In his room, I didn't hear anything. Like, I didn't even hear any doors open. >> So, that's what confuses me the most. >> You have no idea how long little guy was actually outside. Correct. >> Yeah. Like, he was Sometimes when he gets like really quiet, then that's when I'm just Yeah. That's when I'm like cuz usually he just runs around from from the kitchen to his room to the living room, whatever and whatnot. So >> what? >> You said your wife's inside, man. >> You good if I go chat with her real quick? Just make sure she's okay. >> You just tell me how to get there if you want. If you want to hang out here. >> Like I said, he's made a little bit of a mess. So she's right in here. >> Okay. >> Hey, babe. Babe. cops. >> All right, we're good. We can go back outside and wait, man. That's okay. Jay, are you okay? Are you okay? I'm police department. You okay? I'm just making sure you're all right. >> All right. Want to make sure you're all right. We can go wait back outside, man. There's kittens everywhere in here. Look out, little one of the straights that we brought in recently had kittens. >> Had kittens. >> Yeah, >> I got you. In response, the police notified the Department of Children and Family Services, DCFS, to coordinate further intervention. >> So, I'm sure I'm sure they said our cameras are on, man. So, what's what's happening now with given the nature of the call and everything? Sure. You're kind of aware what's happening. Um, we have a policy to go by. We're contact DCFS or the matter. Okay. >> Okay. >> I'll be I'll be completely blunt with you, man. I'm not saying this to be insulting that inside of the house is unsuitable for a child. >> Okay. >> With that being said, we're not how it's going to roll right now. We're going to hang out here. We don't want to cause any more stress or anything to the child or anything like that. >> On a technical level speaking, the child is in our protective custody currently. We're not going to remove you guys from each other. We're just going to hang out there together. Okay. That makes sense. You need to explain that further for you. >> Are you taking >> on paper? Right now, the child is in our protective custody. Physically, I'm not removing him from you right now. We're going to hang out here until we hear back from DCFS and they're going to come out and meet. Okay, that's how this is going to go. Um, again, everything I'm doing is in the best welfare of the child. Everything that I've seen in the home. Again, I'm not saying any of this to be insulting or derogatory towards you. It's not right for the child to be living in that place. >> He seems wellfed and I've told everyone that he seems wellfed. Outside of that, though, he is he's filthy. >> Um, that diaper's been on him, I would assume, for several days by the looks of it. >> He's got a matt matted hair. I mean, I get if you come home tired, man. But >> at the same time, kid needs to be cleaned up before bed or something. >> I mean, like I said, like >> And we have no idea how long the kid was outside. He could have been outside for hours, correct? If I mean, I know you said you didn't hear him knocking. You said, "My suspicion is that uh you were probably asleep and didn't realize the kid got out and the only reason we got you woken up is cuz I I pretty much threw your door open and yelled pretty uh distinctively trying to get your attention." Okay, hang tight with Officer Carr here for a second. We got to make a phone call. Okay, on board with that? >> Y. >> At the same time, authorities gathered additional information, worked with animal control, and documented the scene to ensure a safe living environment for both the child and the pets. >> They got electricity. I turned the foster on. It's got water pump. The house is absolutely disgusting. Um, there's not 13 cats in there. What appears to be there's a molded child chair of a soft sit on chairs with literally moving away. Door is I mean body all over. >> How's it going, gentlemen? >> Hey Paul, how are you? >> My camera's on. How's it going? >> Going all right. >> I'm Paul with the city of Beacon. Um, I'm with the police department. I'm the code enforcement guy. I have a body camera on. I have to let you know that they're a little concerned about the conditions of the house inside. >> Yeah. Yeah. Been in the process of uh cleaning as well. Okay. So, do you mind if we take a look and see what's going on? >> Sure. >> Now, your owner is from Israel, right? But you have a local person in Poria that is you pay rent and manage. >> Mhm. Yeah. >> Yeah. Also, if you want to holler in, just let her know that we're coming in. >> Yeah. Just let her stay out here with officer Young Love. >> Okay. >> Just notice the flies. >> We're good to come in, right? >> And get some pictures. Notice all the flies. [music] What's all over the floor right here? >> Um, he powdered. He got into our bathroom last handle. I didn't put it back on the door. We have this like handle thing like >> Okay. >> No, not that. >> How old is that baby powder? Is it Johnson Johnson baby powder? >> Um, I do not know what >> Do you know where the thing is for it? >> Uh, no. It's probably stuffed in the [clears throat] garbage. Haven't been able to take this out. The garbage can was already full. We had one of these. >> That's like >> like that's been Oh, like how how long how long has it been there? It's been there since like last night. >> Yeah. But baby powder is is air toxic. >> I mean that that can make you and your wife extremely sick and and [clears throat] almost like in some cases it can cause some really bad damage to your lungs. >> Okay. So >> that's there might be a situation where you guys are going to have to leave the house. All right. Is there some place that your wife could you and your wife could go? >> Um I don't know honestly. Like I mean You know anywhere that >> I just haven't gotten to this part. Like it's been there since uh late last night. >> Can you guys So you got animals, too. How many cats do you have? >> Yeah, we we have uh two that are ours and we have like a stray that we brought in that had kittens. >> How many kittens are here? >> Uh four. >> Okay. >> Several other areas of the home were also given special attention. So, >> I'm going to have these guys get a hold of animal control and come out cuz that that that'll >> Can we take a look what's going on back there? >> What's in here? >> Whose bedroom? >> Can we open that? >> Yeah, go ahead. >> Yeah, I've been trying to clean up in here as well. >> Sorry. >> I'm going to get out of his way. I don't I'm being cautious not to step on an animal here. Yeah. >> Flies. >> Just getting a picture over on the side of the bed. Okay. What I'm going to need you to do is you're going to have to get a hold of somebody. The carpet is just completely saturated. Just completely saturated. I'm going to need you to get a hold of somebody. You can't be living in here. Can I open this door? >> Yeah. >> Is this the bathroom? >> Oh, yeah. Yeah. I was spending some time cleaning up on that last night. Just >> all over the floor. Not trying to uh clean up the tub. [crying] >> After completing the inspection, officials conducted an assessment and developed an appropriate plan of action. >> They turned the faucet on the sink and it did turn on, which I was shocked. >> I'm having Ryan get a hold of Missy. I don't know what she's going to be able to do, but they can't be in this house. We're going to go ahead and make up some signs and get it condemned real quick here. And I'll get a hold of the property owner that and then the property manager and tell them they need to get over here. I hopefully Missy can find a place for them to go. But typically in situations like this, I would give them 48 hours, but it's going to be an immediate thing. Hopefully, what >> could she get out of bed? >> She said she can get up and walk. She just doesn't feel good. >> The father was held legally accountable for the incident. >> All right. So, um, Austin is going to get transferred to the hospital. Okay. So, he's out in our custody. So, he's going to take the hospital, get an evaluation done. Um, he can't ride the audience with him. Okay. Cuz he's going to go to the hospital, get checked out. >> He go to the hospital, try to see him, but he is now in our custody. Okay. Kind of moving forward. Still waiting on a couple things. Um, but he's going to go to the hospital and get checked out. Okay. >> Okay. >> You just continue to sit tight for a little bit. Do you actually mind if I run down there real quick to see if uh I can find my phone that he dropped? >> Your phone's here. >> Oh, it is. >> Yes, it's on It's in the mud room. >> Okay. >> He had it in the mud room. So, I don't know if he dropped it in there, but yeah, the phone is up here. >> Okay. All right. >> Yeah. >> I don't really care about it. >> All right, Austin. So, as right now, you're going to be under arrest. Okay. You're not going to jail. Don't have to worry about that. But you are getting an NTA. Okay. It's going to have a court date on it. You have to make sure you're at that court date. All right. It's going to be for being a life the life and health of a child. Okay. The father was charged with endangering the life of a child. Under Illinois law, he could face up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500. Although the family's circumstances may be difficult, every child deserves to live in a safe, clean, and stable environment. [music] Not ensuring children's safety can create serious risks to a child's well-being. Before the incident in Illinois had even settled, police in Missouri were already responding to another case involving children. I know y'all white and I'm black, but listen, I'm a person. You left your kids alone. >> On March 27th, 2022, authorities received a call from a Walmart parking lot after a witness reported that two young children were temporarily unattended in a vehicle. One child had wandered nearby, but was safely assisted by a passerby. Police promptly arrived to ensure the children's well-being and assess the situation. >> Hello. >> Hi. >> You a call? >> Yeah. >> Okay, he's in here. Okay. Uh, >> it's like their favorite driving night. There's another little boy. >> Yeah, that's what they were saying. I got another guy coming. He's going to go inside. The pressure of raising children alone can sometimes lead to poor decisions, but it does not exempt anyone from legal responsibility. Even a brief moment of [music] a child unattended can pose serious risks to their safety and well-being. As the video comes to an end, the [music] images may freeze on the screen, but the impact of the story does not. For adults, it may [music] be just a mistake, a legal matter, or a difficult day. But for children, it becomes a memory, a feeling of fear they may not yet know how to name. Society's responsibility is [music] not only to handle situations according to the rules, but also to remind one another that every adult choice leaves a mark.
