Get away from me. Get away from me. >> If you look at your medication bottle, >> it says do not operate machinery. >> I lost my dad. He committed his medic. >> These moments show that the situation has clearly gotten out of hand. Yet, the adult [music] chose to look away, still expecting more. >> Doing recreational or anything like that? Drinking any? >> No, I don't think. And then from there to here, I watched you cross this bike lane three times. >> Repeated check-ins, unclear comments, and quiet struggles. All of it points to a reality no one wants to acknowledge. This is the information officers were given when asking about the father's identity. >> You grew up here, man. You know that we got to change our kids, man. The next generation. On September 24th, 2021, they received a call from a drive-thru employee reporting a man who seemed distracted while driving with a child on his lap. At the scene, [music] officers asked the man to step out of the vehicle and began documenting the situation. >> Hi, >> how are you? >> Hey, how you doing? >> Good. >> Hi. >> How are you? >> Looking at some attics and stuff. >> Do what? >> Trying to change some stuff. >> What do you mean trying to change something? He's been up looking at for the atticss cuz we need to change the world. >> Oh, okay. >> For her. Um, >> okay. >> And he's waiting on >> I'm supposed to be >> turn your car the other way around. Go behind me. >> He's trying to leave. I'm hanging in the window. >> All right. You got it. >> Can you shut off the car for a second? >> No. >> Sweetie, you want to come with me where I can put your shoe on? >> This is what we do. >> Okay, hold on. You want me to come this story for our kids? >> Okay, let me talk to her for a second. The kids, >> you want to come with me? Go ahead. >> Okay, come on. Let me talk to you for a second. >> It's okay. >> What's her name? >> You can come outside. Talk to me, too. >> Okay. >> All right. >> Yeah. Just stand for our kids, man. Really out there. >> Okay. >> I've been watching it. And >> what do you mean you've been watching it? >> No, I just I lived here my whole life. >> I don't know. >> Her name's Jeffrey Ev. >> Okay. No, in a car. >> Nothing. >> Nothing. Okay. How old is she? >> Hi. Does she go to school? >> Yeah, she goes to school. >> What school does she go to? >> Every school around St. Pete. >> She does. Why every school? Why not just one school? >> Because you got to go to the good ones. >> Huh? >> You got to go to the good ones. >> Okay. Which one does she currently go to? >> Um, >> Hey, Jeffrey. How are you? >> Great. >> All right. Can you do me a favor and step out? Come talk to me real quick. >> Yeah. >> I just got a little situation. baby trying to change some things. >> She's just what? >> He's just trying to answer. >> Okay, just come back. Stay with me. They're going to stay with the baby. All right. Just going to have to talk to you real quick. Do you have your ID with you by chance? >> No. >> I've been watching some things around here. A filthy stink to my stomach. >> Okay. Hey, just walk back here with me. Jeffrey, >> I just wanted to change it. You know, you know me, Jeffrey Edwards. You guys know me. >> Jeffrey, walk back here with me. Okay. >> We got to plant the seed tomorrow. >> Jeffrey, you understand what I'm asking you to do? You understand what you you were asking me to do? >> I'm asking you to walk back here with me. Can you do that? >> Yeah, I can do that. >> Yeah. All right. I appreciate that. >> All right. Come on. >> What you guys doing out here? >> During the discussion about personal details and his condition, the man's responses were vague, mentioning ideas like changing the world and [music] planting seeds for future generations. >> Got a call. Somebody was concerned, so I'm going to talk to you about that a little bit. Okay. >> Yeah. >> All right. We're going to walk back to this black truck right here. Okay. walked right back here with me. It's a new age. >> You got to change it. It's happening. >> I've been looking at the world as an I said, man, I got to change it. I got to be the one to plant my seed. >> We're going to walk right in front of this >> the only one that >> Okay, we're going to walk right in front of this truck right here. Jeffrey, >> I'm not walking this truck. >> Just right here. >> I'll walk right past it. >> No, you're going to walk right here with me. Okay. I'm going to talk to you right here. >> I was talking to you last night. We're taking out. >> Just come here. Stand right here with me. Okay. Cuz I want to talk to you. >> I'm playing one of the streets. >> Jeffrey, I want to talk to you. Figure out what's going on here. Where you going? >> I'm going nowhere. >> Okay. Well, come over here and talk to me. I'm going to I'm trying to figure out how we got here. Okay. I just want to talk to you. >> That's what I wanted to do. >> What's that? Jeffy, you understand what I'm asking you to do? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Come over here. I'm >> trying to change it for our kids, man. Okay. >> That's what matters. I get it. And I've been watching this thing, all right, a long time. Um, there was concerns about your driving tonight. Okay. So, I'm going to be upfront with you. All right. Going to going to do an investigation. All right. With about you driving under the influence tonight, >> I'm silent. >> I just walked up. You were sitting in that in your life, right? >> Yeah. >> It's just two people talking. >> Okay. But you understand now explain why I'm here, right? Does that make sense to you? >> Makes sense. >> Okay. Um, you mind if I check your eyes? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Do me a favor. Just drop that >> borrow. Can you stay with me for a minute? >> Can you stay with me for a minute and try to focus on what I'm asking you to do? Okay. >> Um, like I said, we're concerned about you driving, right? Um, so I'd like to check your eyes. Would that be all right? >> Oh, no. You don't want me checking your eyes? >> No. Let me get some information from you. Just I'll just get all your demographics. Okay. >> What's the address? >> You know it. >> I do not know it. >> You played this. I'm >> not playing a game. I'm just trying to get there. All I have is your first and last name and your birthday. >> Doesn't matter. >> Right. You won't let me check your eyes, right? >> Doesn't matter. In the end, it's just like this. >> So, you don't want me to check your eyes? You're not going to give me any other >> information? I'm fine. >> You going to let me do that or not? >> Last night. >> What's that? >> I thought I trusted you last night. I'm fine. I'm >> a little confused. It wasn't me. I was working last night. All right. >> Can you stand over here for me so I can check your eyes? >> Oh, I'm trying to change some things. Make some right. >> Okay. You want to do some field sobriety test? >> Trying to change some things. >> You want to do some field sobriety test? No. >> See what us addicts do. >> Let me read this to you. Okay. If you refuse to perform the field sobriety test, you're forcing me to make a decision based on my observations up to the point up to this point um on your impairment. Okay. Um so far, you're not comprehending what I'm saying. You can't stay focused, right? >> I've been watching that. That's what we do >> and I know all you guys. >> Additionally, Jeffrey, listen. Additionally, should you be charged with a DUI tonight, that refusal can be used against you. You understand that? >> What does that mean? That means if you refuse to do the field sobriety test, it could be used against you. Okay. Okay. You want to give those a try? >> No, that's all right. >> No. Okay. Here, let me do something. I'm going I'm going to read you your rights. Okay. Cuz I want to ask you some questions. All right. I'm going to ask you some very specific questions on what's going on. But before I do that, I want to read you your rights. Any questions or make any statements. Do you understand the rights I've just read you? Okay. And having those rights in mind, are you okay talking to me? Yeah. Tell me what's going on tonight. Nothing. >> Nothing. What'd you take? You're obviously impaired on something. Okay. >> I I grew up around here and and I know the names that matter around here and I watch some things out. >> Change it for the next generation. >> Okay. Well, what's going on with you? >> Okay. >> How did you get here tonight? What made you drive up to Ben a cup of water? >> To get her a cup of water. >> Okay. Where were you coming from? >> My house. >> Okay. You didn't never tell me where your house was. You never gave me that address. >> It doesn't matter. >> Okay. How far away is it? So, you're at your house earlier today >> before you came here? >> Yeah. >> Do any recreational drugs or anything like that? Any drinking? Any >> No, I don't think so. >> No. Can you explain your behavior? >> No. >> No. You can't explain any of that? >> No. Can you tell me what's going on tonight? >> And why it's it's so hard to try to have a conversation with you? >> We've been having conversation. >> Okay. If you're not answering any questions, you won't do any field sobriety tests, right? You won't let me check your eyes because your behavior's odd, right? Some signs of impairment here that just aren't aren't right. >> You grew up here, man. You know that we got to change our kids, man. The next generation. >> Can you give me any answers at all on how you ended up here? >> Nope. >> No. You're not going to tell me anything? >> No. >> Okay. >> Water. That's what we do. >> Okay. By declining to participate in the evaluation, the man limited the information officers could [music] obtain, requiring them to rely on observable indicators to proceed. >> Walk up to the car here a little bit. >> Definitely you understand what I'm asking you to do. Walk up towards the car as well. Okay. Here. Unlock your hands. >> I just put an uneasy position. >> Okay. Put your hands together like you're praying behind your back. Just like you're praying. Okay. >> Just like you're praying. Okay. >> What's going on there? >> Where is your phone? I feel a wallet. >> Yeah, >> that's not a phone. I'm asking about your phone. >> Come on, guys. >> Jeff, I'm worried about >> Me, too. >> Okay. Well, we need to make sure that she's safe and with somebody. >> Well, we don't care when we're at it. >> Do you have anything on you that's going to stick to your puppy? >> You show me. >> I have had it before, but not not tonight. >> And I grew up here with you guys. Hey, Jeff, you keep saying that, right? You keep saying a couple things that aren't making a whole lot of sense. Okay. So, now I'm really concerned about what's going on with you. All right. >> I'm concerned what's going on with the older generation right now. All right. >> Well, what did you take today? >> Nothing. >> You didn't take anything? You didn't ingest any today? >> No. >> You said you're an What do you usually use? >> Nothing. >> Here, have a seat back there. >> You want to do this today? >> Yes. >> Do you bring me a drink from the bar? >> Have a seat. Have a seat so I can put the seat belt on you. Okay. Come on. And that's the beginning to drive me. Take Have you take me home? >> Please get in. Okay. Sit back. Thank you. Put your other foot in. >> Ow. There you go. >> You see? I got bit by a dog. >> When did you get bit by a dog? Did that happen? Today. >> Here. Put your foot in there, Jeff. Put your foot in. >> That's all that matters to the animal. Okay. Put your foot in. Think about our kids. Put your foot in. All right, there you go. >> A positive note came from the drive-thru staff, particularly the barista and [music] manager, who quickly recognized the level of risk and intervened calmly without escalating the situation. >> So, how did everything start? You were married, right? >> Yeah. >> I had her call where I could get out here to the car. >> Okay. >> He approached me, asked me. >> Okay. Thought you were working. >> And then said, "You and I are going to spread the seed and water it." >> I'm sorry. I'm talking to these women >> and help. And I'm looking at his pupils. He's going, "I'm just an NAA baby." Jesus, >> we are. >> And it's like the world. >> He doesn't. >> He's here to drop. Don't have anybody working here anywhere close to that, but I saw his pupils and that's like I'm hanging on the car. Got the baby some water. >> Um just one more and just a tango. You know, they're coming. >> We didn't drop the baby. He dropped the baby off. He's going to drop her off somewhere like a ditch. She want to give him to us. >> I appreciate it. Thank you. When he rolled up, who did he first make contact with? >> Um, I went to get the check and he said something to me, but I just kind of mean by check like Bill or like they are banned. >> Oh, okay. >> He's our manager. >> Okay. So, he was driving this car. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> This is where he sat for the last what, 45 minutes? >> Yeah. >> And kid on his lap. >> On his lap when he rolled up. >> Kid was on his lap. >> Kid was on his lap. Literally driving and kids on the lap. Have you ever seen this guy before? Never. But he wants help. He needs to get a And he does. >> That's what he said. kept saying he's an addict to save the No, but the world's we're going to save the world. >> Who's the one that had the most contact with him? You >> I've been talking to him a lot. >> A lot. Okay. Has he said that he's done anything today wise or anything? >> He has not said anything about doing. >> He started shaking. >> Yeah, he's shaking a lot. Have you noticed his pupils? >> His pupils are huge. >> Even with lights. I mean, >> even lights. >> I looked at her. >> I was scared. >> And hers are drop her off somewhere and just look. All right, we have some offers coming out here, so we can just stand by for like 10 15 minutes. >> All right. Um, >> I was just concerned about the baby. >> They drop the baby in a ditch somewhere or something >> or give her to a stranger. >> Wanting me to call somebody that doesn't exist to give and then saying her mother did he have with you >> just I'm her mother. >> Says, "But you're mom." >> Yeah. >> And then I said, "Well, you know what? Let me >> and he said this our seed and water it to save the >> for you recognize him ever being here?" No, I've never seen my name. >> I've been here I've been a manager here for over 5 years and I've never seen him or the little guy. >> He'll get evaluated when our units get here and we'll take it from there. Let me just get your guys name for himself. >> Oh yeah. Intoxicated and driving with a kid inside. >> What's your first name, man? Well, I mean I know your first name. [laughter] >> I'm not under influence. M >> 2655. >> All right. So, you first made contact with them >> just in passing. I said no. >> And then you notified her. >> She came in. My other bartender came into me >> and I grabbed her. >> Mhm. >> And told me to go feel it out. >> And I said, "Go see what really is going on." She came back in. I said, "Call the police." >> Okay. So, the first person that made contact is the bartender, right? She tells you. >> I made contact briefly, then my other bartender, then her. >> Okay. Brief for you, then a bartender. Then you let her know, then she comes out, too. And then I was in the mall. >> I had her call you guys while I came out here and kept him. I wouldn't let him leave. >> And I just What's your name? >> Vicki. B. How's your legal? Vicki B. Last name? >> 33. And I thought I knew all the night shift. This is >> And you said you've been out with him for 45 minutes. >> How long have I been out here with him? >> Man, I've been on the phone with the police for quite a long time. >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right. >> I just I wanted to make sure that he wasn't even >> Did any part of what he's been saying make any remote sense to you? >> No. The only thing he wants to do is save the world. >> Save the addicts. We're all addicts. He says, "We have to save the world. We have to save the addict. But we can't do it with the baby. The baby, >> let him continue." >> And I said, "You know, we really need to put a plan together for this. What do you think we should do?" >> I said, "Go call her. >> We We need to spread the seed." >> That's >> and water it because she's all that matters. >> Wow. Okay, there she is. Little girl. And as soon as those lights turned on, he said, "Oh, time for me to leave." I said, "No, no, no, hang out. These are friends of mine. >> Time to me for time for me to leave." >> Yeah. I You know, this is I'm just so grateful to God that he pulled here cuz he would have someone would have said, "Hey, >> when he pulled up, he definitely did not have the kid in his seat. He was actually in his lap driving." >> I'm sorry, but I deal with addicts here a lot. And >> how's Larry? Has he been around? >> Is that on his power box? >> Oh. Or behind. >> I'm the one that has knocked him out a few times. >> Oh, >> on accident. Tripped. Well, you know, he knocked you guys out. >> Does he got the bicycle? >> Yeah, he had it yesterday. >> I think he called something in here a couple days ago. Someone that arrested him. I think I saw it. I don't know. >> I saw him sitting and then I saw an officer over there talking to him. So, I don't know what that was about. >> I think two nights ago, man. >> I mean, he sits on the power box when we have live bands and listens to the music. >> He knows not to come here. Yeah, >> he does. You need to meet Larry. >> And if he sees me, he's like, >> he can't come here. >> Yeah, I got one. >> Oh my god. >> I had a another one. You and Larry are match for each other mouthwise. >> Well, I mean, I walked him up and got on a few times. >> Oh my. He He He gets uh spicy. >> He gets spicy, feisty, and every other word you can imagine. >> There's been times he sat back here at the table. And I've given him a burger and said, "Take it back across the street." Just to know he had something to eat. >> Yeah. >> That's not our job. >> I should get her something to eat the baby or >> um I don't know. I wouldn't because >> I don't know what the kids could be allergic and that's not know just to be safe to give the little girl something to drink. >> Be right back. >> The father was charged with DUI and felony [music] child. Under Florida law, he may face a maximum sentence of up to 5 years and 9 months in prison. Driving while distracted, especially [music] with a child present, carries serious risks as even a brief lapse can have significant [music] consequences for everyone involved. A child only wanted to finish his chores. But the mother demanded more, a way to express her frustration. That was when the situation became serious. You were upset tonight and which made you cry. And that upset mom and she you in the forehead and said, "I'm going to give you something to cry about." On June 10th, [music] 2024, officers were called to a residential area following a report of a family conflict. The 11-year-old boy and his sister were living under ongoing tension and emotional pressure from their mother, seriously affecting their well-being. At the scene, the grandmother stepped in to support and protect the children. Is that your daughter? >> That's my granddaughter. >> Okay. Hey, ma'am. Ma'am, come over here with me and let them talk to her. You said she's 18. >> Your granddaughter's 18. My daughter's 35. >> Okay. 3 seconds. >> Thank you all for getting your ass. You're welcome. >> I I didn't know what to do. I know she has these rages a lot and then, you know, next day she'll calm down. Um she takes all her anger out on everybody, you know. >> So, what seems to be the issue tonight? >> Like you said, he she just start telling go do the dishes and just give him direction to do a lot of stuff. She's trying to move. The house is a mess. Got all them dogs up there. um she's raising dogs and she's trying to move to Indianapolis and I really don't feel that my son grandson even my granddaughter should go with her. Sure. >> So I may have to put myself in a position where I get a bigger place and take my grandkids. I don't want to see them go into you know children's services or anything like that. >> I was just and you know every time she I get a call from her I I just panic like what's wrong now you know. >> So who called you tonight? Your daughter. >> My daughter called you know I'm come and get I'm ke myself and >> Okay. So, does she have mental health issues? >> Yes. >> What she won't go to get herself diagnosed. She's been doing this for the last I don't know 5 10 years. >> Okay. >> Her Facebook page has everything but Chucky on it and everything. >> She's mom's talking for us now based off these not the forehead. >> Okay. In the forehead, correct? >> But he told me. >> And what did you get? Why did she hit you? because she said that I was that I was she to like give me a reason to cry for. >> What were you crying for? >> Like she was yelling at me and just >> she just goes off. >> Okay. >> For any reason. >> Then she just got her bomb and just started in my leg in the back of my head. >> Okay. >> You go. Then my granddaughter had to jump. This is not the first person. She had to jump in between to keep her from him. She had to jump in the middle of it. All right. Well, let's corroborate that with the with the granddaughter and we'll go from there. Uh, are you do you feel like does it to touch? >> All right. >> Is it just the one spot and then you said the back of your head? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Show me where? >> Like she like right here in my >> Can I look? >> Yeah. >> Like right there? >> Yeah. >> Anywhere else? >> Just in my legs. Like right here. >> Okay. Can you pull your pant legs up and let me see if I can see a mark? >> Oh, yeah. About like right here. >> He's so scared. You don't have to disturb anymore. >> Um, do you have a headache? >> All right. How did she chew in the forehead? >> I might have I really don't know. I might have to go down. Do >> you feel like you passed out like you fell asleep and woke up? >> Make sure you tell them the truth cuz I know him. He exaggerates a lot, too. Not just to let you know that he has that information. >> 21. We're okay. >> Yeah. He he at school he reported her like about a year ago with the teacher. >> Okay. >> And she was getting counseling. >> Uhhuh. >> The situation began with the boy being scolded while washing dishes. Then quickly escalated as the mother found additional reasons for criticism. >> So what he reported to the school turned out to be legitimate. >> Yeah. Okay. >> Yeah. Mhm. >> All right. >> Yeah. So teacher, >> so let me just clarify. Okay, you were upset tonight and which made you cry and that upset mom and she you in the forehead and said, "I'm going to give you something to cry about." And then took her belt off or grabbed a belt and started you in the back and in the legs. >> How many times did she hit you? >> Like three times in my leg and then like two times in my back. >> Okay. And what were you upset about originally? Um me and my sister was just kind of upset about um we were like we were going on and off about um doing the dishes and tomorrow is Monday and I got to go to school. >> Okay. Did she your sister at all? >> No, they mostly get along the best. >> Okay. >> So he blames his father's not in his life. That's her fault. And she she blames that he has his problem cuz his father's not in his life. He does get a little upset and complains a lot and we try to get we had him in football try to get you know try to keep him active. I have him every weekend try to get you know make sure they're not sitting here in the house by themselves. Why she works over in Indianapolis what she do in Indianapolis? >> She's um cosmetology. >> Okay. >> She that's where >> I'm just going to take your pupil's but okay. >> All right. Very good. Do you feel sick to your stomach at all? >> Not really. My stomach is starting to hurt. >> Like upset? has a benefit. >> Yeah. When like she was trying to get to me where my sister had to stop like my heart felt like like a sharp pain and my heart just it just didn't feel good. So then my grandma >> not yet. >> Kiki, are you okay? >> Okay. Yeah. She usually don't bother her. And she lost her dad a year ago. He killed himself. >> So same mom, different dads. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Same story. >> Uh yeah. Good. It is so different. Will you come over here and talk to me? >> Most heartbreaking is that the emotional pain left after their father's passing has resisted for years and the children now face added pressures. Listen to the remaining child's tearful account. >> Sorry. You already talked to my deputies. Okay. I'm their supervisor. I'm just trying to get some clarity in tonight. >> Mhm. >> Okay. >> In your own words, tell me what happened. >> So, I had just finished cooking dinner. took everybody's plate to the kitchen. Kitchen with a mess. I'm like, okay. He's been asleep all day. He hasn't done anything. It's a Sunday. And I asked him, "Hey, you could either get ready for bed to school, mom. You can help me clean the kitchen." And then he goes, "Well, you don't help me with anything." Well, whenever I ask for help and we just started going back and forth. Mom came in, he he was told to just go do the dishes. And when he was told to go do the dishes, he had attitude. and he starts pulling everything out real hard, slamming stuff, not throwing doing anything correctly basically out of spite cuz he has attitude. And my mom gets him and gets real angry. And she tells him to go do wall sits. And when he doesn't do wall sits correctly, has attitude and is just crying because he has to do wall sits. She gets upset. She grabs the belt and uses disciplinary action, hits his leg, hits his his back cuz he supposed to be doing wall sits. His back is supposed to be against the wall. And he's crying. He's crying hysterically. and my mom is just losing it. So, I'm there. I'm trying to calm her down. And I'm like, "Mom, mom, just calm down." And then she gets to a point where she can't do it anymore. And I hold her back. I'm like, "Mom, go for a drive. Like, go somewhere so you can calm down." So, nothing happens. And while she's out, she calls grandma and like, "Go pick up Aiden. I can't be there with him." Or, "I can't be there. Me and him can't be in the same place. He's driving me insane." Or whatever. That's what I assume because that's what she's telling me. And um so she's off for a drive. Um grandma comes, gets him, and then we are me and my mom, me and my mom are on the phone going back and forth. I'm trying to calm her down. Um so she can get home safely cuz I know she's upset. And she eventually comes home. I'm talking to her. I'm comforting her. And that's when the one of the policemen knocked on our door. And that's why I assume she called the police cuz what she told her. I didn't know what she told her. But that's why >> he was told to go do walls as corporal punishment. >> Yes. >> Which is normal. >> Mhm. >> And because he wasn't doing that correctly, >> she started with a belt. >> Yeah. >> How many times? >> I think twice on the leg and then twice like right here. >> Did you witness it? >> Yes. >> Okay. Did he fall over at any point? He didn't fall over, but he said he couldn't do walls because she kept demanding him to do walls. And he said, "I can't. My leg, my leg." And that's when I kind of stepped down like, "Mom, he you can't. He can't." And then that's that's when I told her to go for a drive cuz she was starting to get really upset cuz he wasn't listening. >> Her aggression was growing cuz he's got a knot on his forehead right there. >> I didn't I >> That's why I'm asking. >> Yeah. Uh, I didn't see her put his hands on me. I I was cleaning the kitchen while it was happening cuz >> So you didn't see >> I see her >> Uhhuh. >> him, but I didn't see how he got them up. >> What is normal outside of wall sits? What's normal corporal punishment for him? >> Wall sits sit up and then usually he gets looked not like I seen tonight, but like on his behind. And on the bottom of like the back of his thigh usually and sometimes he gets on his up here cuz he's trying to block and she's still with him. That's usually what it is. And then that's usually it. >> You always been with mom. Do you think tonight was excessive? Be honest with me. I mean I think all of us here agree that your mom went too far, right? Has she ever been in trouble before? Never at all. So, >> so grandma tells me that at one point your brother had reported her to the school about it being a or whatever and it it went it went all the way through and I guess mom had to seek some counseling. Is she still in counseling? >> No. >> Has she ever put her hands on you or is it just him? >> Um, I got whooped when I was younger like that. Not like that, but >> when you got whooped, where did you get whooped at? >> Same place. on the backside or in the legs tonight. Would she was nearly Was she whooping him and telling him to complete more or was it four strokes one after another? >> It wasn't one after another. It was like two on the legs and then he she told him to stand up and then when he did it, she was back and then she was like, "Get up. Get up. Get up." And then she back again. because you knew it was too much. You see where I'm going with this? Are >> you going to take this? >> Yeah. Mom's going to go deal. Will you go get mom for for DV? >> At this point, the sister began to react strongly. What unfolded gave officers clear grounds to consider the appropriate steps regarding the mother. >> Hey, Grandma, come over here for a minute. >> This could be okay. >> Get away from me. Get away from me. >> So, Here, here's the problem we're running into. There's a difference between corporal punishment and just abuse. >> Uhhuh. >> And the way she explained it, it's abuse. >> He was already going through corporal punishment >> and he wasn't doing it correctly. So, she pulled a belt out and then proceeded to hit him more when he wouldn't just simply stand up. >> She lost her dad himself a year ago >> and and I'm sorry for that. >> Yeah. Now, she feels like she's going to lose her mom, but she'll be okay. But even she at 18 years old just sat here and told me that she believes tonight was too much. That's where I'm going with this. >> You know what I mean? >> Yeah. >> She'll have her day in court. >> Yeah. >> But tonight she's going to your your daughter is going to come and she's going to go to jail. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Um once we >> I had to >> once we kind of get things calmed down. Yeah. >> I'm just going to verify that >> someone talk to a counselor medication. Give her something. So once we get things calmed down, I'm just going to verify with mom that grandson can go with you. Okay? Cuz mom's got custody. So it's up to her on where he goes. >> Okay. >> All right. >> She'll probably say, "Yeah." >> As far as granddaughter's concerned, I think she's upset with you because you called and I understand that. >> And like you said, Andrew went too far tonight. I had to do something. I hadn't called and she did it, you know. >> Sure. >> I mean, this is a lesson for her, you know. So, >> I got to go to work in the morning. Like, I don't do anything to anybody. Are you serious right now? >> I got to go to work in the morning. >> So, we'll talk to her in just a minute. Let's We're going to put her in the back of the car and then I'll have you guys have a seat in your car. >> Okay. >> Um I'm going to have one of my evidence technicians come out and take some pictures of him, his the knot to his head and the spot on his back >> and then maybe we can walk inside for a minute so I can look at his legs. >> Thank you. >> Okay. Now she's mad at me. It >> It's part of the process. Okay. >> So, I'm sorry this is happening, but it's it's too much. >> It is. >> taking taking a belt to a child is one thing. Like, like I said, corporal punishment's allowed. It It really is. But there but there's a a fine line between corporal punishment even involving a belt. >> Mhm. >> And then there's you have a knot to his head, you got marks on his back. Self admittedly, when she was whooped, she was whooped on her backside and maybe on her legs. He was up near his head on his back and nobody can really explain why he has a knot on his forehead. >> That's why I wanted to speak to her separately because I needed some further explanation on tonight's events. >> Okay. No, she's okay. She just has to be upset with me. She'll be okay. >> It's part of the process. >> So, um if you guys want to have a seat in your Mazda for for a little bit. >> Come on. >> Come on, dude. We'll be with you in a little bit. Okay. After everything, the sister remained shaken upon learning that her mother needed to speak with authorities. >> What is my daughter doing? >> Why? Because you're going to >> What did I do? >> Oh my god. >> Yeah. Can I get my >> shoes in there? We can get my clothes on it. Yeah, we'll have daughter or somebody going for cuz the dogs. >> What did I What did you tell? Well, >> I'll let you talk to your mom in just a second, but >> we're going to we're going to go ahead and just have her sit in the car for a minute. You're going to be able to talk to >> Okay. Let's step [clears throat] off to the side here. >> I got you. We'll just walk down here. Like I said, I'll let you talk to Let you talk to before before anything goes further. Okay. >> Would you would you be able to go inside and just get your mom a pair of like sandals or shoes or something? Are you able to do that? I know there's a small dog up there. >> Four dogs. Would you Are you willing to complete a a witness statement for us just on what occurred tonight? Yeah. >> Okay. >> I lost my dad. He could >> Is your mom's going to go to to jail tonight for domestic? It's just based on on how she handled the situation with your brother. It was just a little too a little too far. >> I can't. I'm sorry. I can't. She's all I got. >> I She's It's It's going to be for a night or so. Um, do you know if she's ever been arrested before in the past? >> I don't know. >> Okay. Have you lived with mom? >> Yeah. >> Your whole life? Okay. Just take some deep breaths. It I It happens. It It sucks. Take some deep breaths. Okay. >> Do you want to get the shoes and stuff first then have her do this or >> Yeah. Do you mind getting your mom just a pair of shoes for the night? You go up there with >> Okay. >> The mother may face charges of childment [music] and domestic. Under Ohio law, she could receive a sentence ranging from 2 to 8 [music] years in prison. She exhibited signs of prolonged stress while the children were under significant emotional strain. This highlights the importance of mental health support for both parents and children to promote healthier development. A small pill, a big explanation, and a truth the mother could not hide from officers. >> Hey, you're being arrested cuz you're not able to drive that vehicle safely. >> On February 23rd, [music] 2024, Charlotte County deputies received a report about a woman who appeared unfit to drive with a child in the vehicle. At the scene, when asked about her unusual behavior, the mother mentioned taking a mental health medication. Your call has been updated. >> You have another unit, please. >> Hello. >> With the sheriff's office, traffic safety team. Reason I'm staff at the Infinity is we had a call about your vehicle. They were concerned about your ability to operate a vehicle. Is everything okay? >> Have you had anything alcohol or anything to drink today? >> All right. Are you on any medication prescribed by a doctor? >> No. Well, anxiety. >> Okay. What? How much have you had today? >> My anxiety med. >> We're right in the middle of the pharmacy. >> Yes. >> Um, last night. >> Okay. All right. Um, what were you doing up at Charlie's Pub? >> I had to use the rest. >> Okay. Well, they're the ones that called. They were concerned about you being able to drive safely. Okay. >> So, I have another vehicle coming. Uh, how come you didn't when I got out of the car to walk up to you, you didn't uh you just took off on the access right there? Or did you not even see me? >> No, I I stopped to saw you. >> No, I was behind you when you were at the stop sign. I was walking up to your car and you took off. >> Okay. >> I'm sorry. >> All right. Well, like I said, right now I'm just waiting. Um, >> how old is the little baby? >> She's two and he's seven. >> Oh, okay. >> I took her. >> You took her in the pub? >> Yeah, I just had shoes. >> You didn't take him? >> No, >> you left him in the car. >> I left vehicle running. I just had to peek. >> Okay, I'm gonna get my form. Can you get her out real quick? Table 313's out with me. I'm just I'm going to do field sobriety, but she's got two babies in the car, too. So, I'm at the I wait for a third to get here to watch them while I do her. >> Standard evaluations were conducted. However, the mother appeared unstable, [music] had difficulty following instructions, and struggled to maintain proper posture throughout the process. >> At this time, ma'am, I am concerned about your ability to operate a vehicle safely. I'm seeing a couple clues and indicators that believe me to be that you may not be able to operate it safely. That I'm going to ask you submit to field sobriety to make sure you're able to operate your Infinity safely today. Okay. Will you do the exercises I'm going to ask of you? >> I will. >> All right. Fish, the first thing I'm going to do, Miss Patton, is I'm going to check your eyes. All right. So, what I want you to do is stand with your feet together, arms at your side. You see that pen? I need you to focus on that pen. When I move it, I'm going to move it in a left to right fashion. You're going to follow with your eyes and your eyes only, keeping your head completely straight. Do you understand? Yes, I understand. >> Do you have any questions? >> No, I do not. >> All right. >> All right, miss. This time we're going to go upwards. Same thing. Just your eyes, head straight. Okay. >> Yes, sir. >> Relax for a moment. All right. This time what I'm going to do is I'm going to go around your face in a circle twice. So you're going to follow it with your eyes. Your eyes only. After I make that second turn, I'm going to bring it in close to your nose. I'm not going to touch your nose. It'll be very close. Yes, sir. >> As mine, what I'm trying to do is get your eyes to cross. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. >> Yes, sir. >> All right, Miss Patton, this white line that you're standing on, do you see it? >> Yes, sir. >> Do you consider it a fairly straight line? Is it free of any debris that could cause you to trip? >> No, sir. >> It's not? What's on it that could cause you to trip? >> No. >> No, sir. >> No. I asked, is it free of any debris? >> Oh, yes, sir. >> Okay. I see that you're wearing sandals. Um, would you like to take those off and do it barefoot or are you comfortable with your sandals? >> I'm comfortable, sir. >> What I'm going to do, ma'am, is this time I want you to put your left foot directly on the line. Take your right foot, place it directly in front of left like mine. Arms at your side. Stay in that position. Do not start until I tell you to begin. Sir, >> when I tell you to begin though, Miss Patton, you're going to take a series of steps, counting your steps out loud like such. >> One, two, three. You're going to go all the way to nine. Upon reaching nine, you're going to leave that lead foot in place. You're going to take that back foot. You'll step out, make a series of steps turning all the way around. You're then going to return back down the line. Another nine steps like such. One, two, three. Go ahead and assume the position. Right foot in front of left. All right. Nope. Don't start yet. Wait till I tell you to start. So, left foot on the line, right foot in front of left, touching heel to toe. Right foot, right foot in front of left. Are you ready? >> Yes, sir, I am ready. I'm sorry. Yes, sir, I am ready. >> All right, put your foot right foot in front of left. That's the starting position. Now, begin. >> Yes, sir. Woo! Heat. Miss Patton, do you remember the instructions? >> Go ahead and for nine steps and then turn and go back nine. Right. >> Okay. >> How many steps did you take? >> I didn't count. Do you want me to start again? >> No. No. Just continue back the other way. Heat. Heat. All right. How many steps was that? >> Honestly, I got to step back. >> Okay. All right. >> I can do it again. >> No, we're fine. Do you have a stopwatch for me in a second? >> Yeah, I can. >> Just wait right here on this line for me. >> Yes, sir. >> We got two more exercises to do. >> Sure. >> Oh, no. I'll just have you keep the time. It's fine. >> Okay. Yeah. Let me get you guys ready. The next exercise is called the one leg stand. >> Okay? When I tell you to, you're going to take the foot of your choice and you're going to raise it approximately 6 in off the ground. It's going to look like this. Your foot will be parallel to the ground. Your arms will be straight. Your legs will both be straight. 6 in is like a coke can. Think about resting your foot on top of a Coke can. You're going to count out loud in the matter of such. 1,00 1,002 1,003. You're going to continue to count until I say stop. I'm not going to tell you how long I'm going to have you do it for, but I will tell you that I'm about to do it longer than I'm going to have you do it. If at any time you lose your balance or anything like that and have to put your foot down, regain your composure, pick that foot back up and continue counting where you left off, sir. >> So if you have to put it down on a five, when you pick it back up, make sure we start counting again at six, sir. >> All right. Both legs are to remain straight. Foot is parallel to the ground 6 in off the ground. Arms are at your side. You're looking at your foot. And you're counting out loud 1,00 1,002, excuse me, 100,00. >> Any questions on what I'm asking you to do? >> No, sir. Do you have what what foot do you want to stand on? And what foot do you want to raise? >> I'm going to stand on this, but can you block the wind? It's It's actually very >> It is windy. I said I And I did just do it. But what I could do I mean I can I can stand to the side, but what I need you to do is >> I have no problem standing here. I just want you to >> No. Do you have any physical handicaps or ailments that keeps you from doing this? All right. So, you're going to stand on your left and raise your right. Sure. All right. Tell me when you're ready. >> Begin. And you can stop. Observable signs indicated she was not in full control, which became the basis for stricter action. The mental health medication explanation then worked against her. As the label clearly stated, "Do not operate machinery or vehicles." Like Miss Patton, the last exercise is called the finger to nose. So what I need you to do is take both your fingers like this, index fingers. Now put them to your side, palms forward like mine. Remain in that position until I tell you to start. When I tell you Let's switch sides so the sun's not in your eyes. I rather have the sun in my eyes. When I tell you to start, you're going to have your head tilted back and your eyes shut. Eyes are staying open to watch you, but your eyes will be shut. Okay? If I say left, I'm going to call it a series of lefts or rights. >> If I say left, it's straight up. Tip of the nose, tip of the finger, and right back down to your side. I will not remind you to put it down. If I say right, it'll be the exact same. Straight up. Tip of nose, tip of finger, and right back down to your side. So, we're clear. That's the tip of the finger. Not the nail, not the pad, not the side, sir. >> If this is your nose, and that's your That's the bridge. And those are your nostrils. It's literally the tip to tip. So, it's like this. Nope. Like this. Straight on. >> So, >> and then right down. >> This. >> This. Just like that. Yes, ma'am. >> So, turn it around to >> Yep. to your nose and right back down to your side, >> sir. All right, Miss Patton, head back. Eyes shut. Left, right. Remember the instructions. Remember the instructions. >> You got to put your hand down. >> Oh, sir. Sorry. Start. >> Left. Right. Right, left. I got one one last exercise. It's a balance exercise. >> Face that stop sign real quick. I'm going to explain how to balance for you real quick in a minute. >> Miss Amanda, at this time you're under arrest for DUI. >> Do you have somebody that can come get the children? Who can come get the children? >> All right, we're need to call him. I don't want to have I don't want to have DCF have to come out here for him. What's your husband's phone number? >> We're going to go over being >> You're being arrested for DUI driving under the influence. >> And that influence encompasses alcohol and medication. Hey, you're being arrested because you're not able to drive that vehicle safely. The clues and indicators you provided me during field sobriety are enough to affect the arrest on you. So, we're going to go to my car. Nothing on you that's going to get you in trouble. The jails, weapons, or anything? >> Okay. Is there anything in the vehicle that's going to get you in trouble? Any >> Hey, though. It's questions I have to ask. >> I said no. >> I know. And I'm just I'm just saying it's just questions we have to ask. What's your husband's name? >> Charles. >> Charles. >> You want to tell me what I what I failed? It's not pass or fail, but I'll tell you that you gave me enough clues and indicators to arrest you. >> Oh, did I? >> Oh, yes. Absolutely. >> Does my anxiety medicine that I didn't tell you about have anything to do with this? Absolutely. Steroids. >> Absolutely. If you look at your medication bottle, it says do not operate machinery. >> No. And absolutely. >> That I didn't tell you about. >> Okay. It could be. I'm not sure what that is, but the the anxiety medications. Absolutely, ma'am. Well, I'm also >> Okay. >> Yeah, >> I got to step away. >> Okay, >> I don't want to. >> She'll be right back up. >> You got to take take a seat, Amanda. >> The mother was kept under [music] supervision while the children were safe. Officers reassured the children and contacted her husband to pick them up in the parking lot. >> She said the husband traffic should be the husband. We got a 2-year-old and again he's in the car and we need him. >> Do you want to be I'm going to start typing something real quick. Do you want to ask her if there's a parent, a grandparent? We'll get anybody at this point. Any relative is better than DCF. >> Yeah, that's your unicorn. What's its name? Is that your brother? >> He's crying. >> What's your brother's name? What happened? >> A boo boo in my hair. Yeah, I got a couple of those. >> What you watching? Sing. He's crying. How old are you? Uhoh. Are you watching Sing? It's my favorite movie. Yeah. He's crying. What's his name? What is it? Are you trying to give me your unicorn? This is your unicorn though. Do you want them? You want me to have him? >> Yeah. >> What's its name? >> Yeah. >> What's your What's on your feet? >> You don't know? Yeah. That That's my radio. So that's how I talk to people. That's how I talk to my co-workers. You have pretty eyes. They're blue like mine. It's talking. Yeah. Yeah. I'm going to go make sure your brother's okay. All right. I'll be right over there, though. Okay. I'm not going to leave. I'm just going to walk around to go over there. Okay, I'll be right back. Hi, buddy. Hi. HI. HI. >> YES. UM, YES, I'm still here currently with them. me and another deputy are >> Hi, is this Charles? >> Charles, this is Corporal Konet from the sheriff's office. Are you familiar with Port Charlotte any? Yep. and it'll be the there's there's a 7-Eleven on one corner and across the street from the 7-Eleven there's a Midway pharmacy. We're in the pharmacy parking lot. >> The mother was charged with DUI involving alcohol or drugs, DUI with a person under 18 in the vehicle and child without great bodily [music] harm. Under Florida law, she could face up to 5 years in prison or probation along with a $5,000 fine. This video serves as a reminder about parental responsibility, the risks of impairment, and a child's right to safety. When adults make mistakes, innocent children often face the [music] greatest consequences. That day, it wasn't the Cadillac that lost control. It was a father taking risks with his child's safety during a moment of distraction. >> I sat in that parking lot. >> I had two drinks. >> According to the bar, you had two beers and two shots. That is too much for you to be driving with a child in the car. On July 25th, 2024, officers observed a man driving a Cadillac out of the Legend's cafe bar and grill parking lot, showing signs of unstable driving. They conducted a traffic stop and noticed unusual odors on the driver's breath. More concerning, a child in the vehicle was not wearing a seat belt. >> Then I just saw you not to drive. >> I waited. Time was >> You waited like 15 minutes. >> It's been like 45 minutes. >> It has not been 45 minutes. I sat in that parking lot the entire time. It does not matter. Your kid is in the child in the back seat with no seat belt on and you are driving and talk to me. >> I just told him to put him seat belt. >> No. >> Please don't do me like that. >> You're driving your child in the car. Yes, you are. Your words are slurred. If you think 45 minutes have passed, you're wrong. >> It was 45. >> No. Step out of the car. >> Trying to get right there, bro. >> Try to ruin my whole life. >> Um, watch the kid. Come here, buddy. >> Come stand up here with me. Stay right there. A good idea. All right. So, I know we just talked to you in that parking lot. How long did you say that was? >> It was 30 40 minutes. I just trying to make right here was the next turn. So, I was just trying to make >> Okay. Well, I sat in that I sat in that parking lot. >> I had two drinks. >> According to the bar, you had two beers and two shots. That is too much for you to be driving with a child in the car. Okay. And it definitely was not 35 minutes because I sat there and watched you drive off and then from there to here, I watched you cross this bike lane three times. >> I don't agree with that, but okay. That's what you say. >> Okay. Are you willing to participate in field test to see if you allowed to drive? >> I would like to walk home. >> Well, we're past that point. We told you to walk home from the bar. I did, but I waited the time till I was sober enough to drive. You're only You're only allowed two beers. You can drive. >> But you had two beers and two shots according to the receipt to show me. >> So, you think I'm drunk? >> Are you willing to participate in guilty extent? >> True. If I have to. Do I have to? >> I mean, it's it's your legal right, but >> I'll try based based off of >> I'm not drunk. I know I'm not drunk. Okay. Here. Stand over here on the sidewalk. >> Can you please not scare my child? Please >> stand over here on the sidewalk. I'm noting drunk, dude. I'm just trying to get home with my kids. My wife has to get picked up tonight at 11. Not trying to start trouble, my bro. You understand? Why are you so so quick to down like that? >> You don't like me? Is that what it is? >> Not that I don't like you. I don't know who you are. I told you put your hands on my car. You slammed your keys on my car. You're scratching my paint. >> I didn't mean to. >> But you did. It's common sense. >> That's [ __ ] >> It's not ridiculous. I don't want you to scratch my car. >> Yeah. Not slam your keys on my car. There's a difference. Oh man, I didn't mean to do that. >> I have a kiss. I live literally right. >> We're past that point. She told you not to drive. You're driving. >> No. >> We're not me. >> She gave you an out. She told you not to drive and you're driving with a kid in your car. >> She told me I could wait. >> Yeah. And you waited 15 minutes. >> No, I didn't. I waited 45 minutes. >> It was not 45 minutes. I can tell you that. >> I'm fine. Then you're right. >> I know I'm right. >> All right. Maybe you are. >> I am. >> Well, I thought I waited for you. >> No, you didn't. That's the alcohol. >> So mean you just want to put me down, bro. I I if you're driving intoxicated, I absolutely want to put you in jail. Yes. >> But that's not the deal. >> That That is the deal. >> Couple But you're allowed to drink. >> There is no set alcohol that you're allowed to drink. No, there's not. I promise you there's not. >> Really? >> Really? >> You really want me to go now? >> If you're drunk, then yes, I want you to go. >> Thank you. I appreciate it. >> I know you love that. That's good about it. It does. Makes me feel great. >> I bet it does. You're a piece of >> You're says the one who's driving with your luck. >> I'm so I'm so lucky. What? >> That I'm not a cop step up to you. Can you? >> But I can't. No, I'm not. >> You just did. >> I said no, I didn't. I >> That's probably a good idea. You should step back. >> I don't want no problems with >> Good. Then let's keep that like like that. >> He wants me to use the fog line of >> Okay. >> Why can't I just walk home? >> We're past that. >> We're past that point. >> That guy's past. >> I'm past that point, too. I was the one sitting there watching you put your child in >> 45 minutes. >> It definitely has not. Walk this way. >> Please don't scare him. Please. >> You caused this. This is your fault. >> You need to go over here and do the bill. >> Walk this way. Preliminary assessments were conducted before the standard tests and the father's mental state appeared unsettled. >> You put him in the situation now. >> I went to a bar and had a couple beers. Bro, >> I don't know what I wanted. >> I didn't stand in front of my car. >> Just chill, bro. Chill, bro. Everything's good, dog. Either way, I'm good. Okay. Your mother's way down the street working for these people. Okay, chill out, please. You're all I got. >> All right. I said stand. Stand up. >> I'm sorry, sir. Okay. I didn't mean to slam my car. Okay. I just want to say that. >> I appreciate you. I'm sorry. >> Before Hey, focus on me. Your child is in good hands with him. Okay. We have to get through this in order for you to go home. >> All right. >> Before we start, I have to ask you these questions. Are you sick or in >> Are you sick or >> No. >> Are you a diabetic? >> No. >> Do you take insulin? >> Are you under the care of a doctor? >> Yes. >> For what? >> For anxiety issues and panic disorder. >> Do you have seizures? >> Yes. I >> physical handicaps. Oh, >> visual. >> Are you under the care of a dentist? >> No. >> All right. You see this line right here? >> Yes, ma'am. >> Put your feet on this line like this together. Arms down by your side. >> All right. You see the tip of my pen? All right. I want you to follow the tip of my pen with your eyes and your eyes only, keeping your head completely straight forward. Okay. Some are going to do the same thing. Okay, you still see the tip of my pen. This time we're going to go up. Follow with your eyes and your eyes only. Okay, >> I feel fine. That was easy. I wish I would have not stressed out so much about me drinking a little bit. I really drink a little bit. What they said I drink. I gave one of the drinks like half cold back. I don't understand why you're tripping. >> Are you allowed at least a drink or two? No. >> All right. >> The next thing I'm going to ask you to do is put your feet one foot on the line and one foot in front of you like this. >> On the line, one foot. >> Hands down by your side. Stay like that until that's how you begin. Okay. All right. So, I'm going to demonstrate for perh for So, starting here, you're going to take nine heel to steps forward. Okay? So, for my demonstration purposes only, I'm going to do three steps. Keeping your hands down by your side, you're going to do one, two, three, you're going to continue all the way to nine. Once you get to nine, you're going to take a series of small steps and turn around like so. >> I did have surgery on my right hand, so I'm going to do my best. >> So, small steps turning around and then nine. He also set us back. One, two, turn nine steps and turn around. Yeah. So, you do nine heel toe steps towards this way. Heel. >> Yep. And then you do a series of small steps like I just showed you and do nine back. Okay. Counting out loud. I'm not going to tell you when to stop. Okay. >> Keep your hands down by your side. You can begin. could do better. It's kind of weird. Whatever. Emotionally, he seemed to care deeply for his child. However, his choices put the child at potential risk. >> I'm sorry for whatever thing I very well. I love that kid more than you could ever imagine. My everything kids and I was fair to drive. That's the only reason I drive cuz I felt like I had sobered up enough to drive. You told me if you feel like you're good enough to drive, then eventually you can, right? All right. Same thing. Put your feet together like this. Arms down by your side. Okay. This time we're going to demonstrate the one leg stand. Okay. You're going to look at your >> stand as far as your widebody frame is. >> You're going to keep your legs like your feet together for the moment. And you're going to raise one foot 6 in off the ground like this. And you're going to count out loud. 1 1 I did not tell you to start. Hold on. 1 1,00 2 100 3 100. You're going to continue until I tell you to stop. Do you want to stand? >> Yep. >> Do you want to raise your right or your left foot? >> Don't matter. Whatever you want. >> Well, you have to you have to choose your left or your right. >> I have to. All right. Um, let's go left. I don't know. Never done this before. >> All right. Keep them down by your side, making a fist with the rest of your hand like this. Hold one finger up. >> I'm sorry, this is a little confusing. Can you please explain? >> Hold one finger up like this, and then put it down by your side like this on both sides. Okay? Stay like that until I tell you to begin. Okay? His bail was set at $1,000. No one doubts he cares for his child and did not intend to put them at risk, but the law focuses on actions, not intentions. You decided to be mean to me. >> Look, I'm still very patient with you right now. But you are not getting out of these handcuffs anymore because I gave you three chances just like I do the ma'am. Please, please. >> Maybe in a little bit. >> I'm sorry, >> but not right now. >> Please, can you just please? He's 4 hours away. I swear guys, he's in Fort Myers. >> Okay. >> She even challenged, "You have 3 seconds to take the handcuffs off." And began counting 1 2 3. >> Get me out of these handcuffs now. >> Do you want me to help you sit back up? >> I am not going to be embarrassed in front of my children. >> And I tried to prevent that. But remember, >> no you did not. You right now get me out of these handcuffs and you have 3 seconds. One, two, three. >> But of course, the police were not intimidated. >> Okay, listen, Mr. Rodriguez. So my other deputies here, Mr. or Deputy Oz, >> listen, I can stand up by goddamn yourself. Remember, we're on school grounds and your kids ARE INSIDE. >> DO YOU I care about everything? >> No, you don't. I told you I was already fine and you want to be a stupid. >> Okay. All right, fine. >> Keep your head still and I want you to follow a stimulus. The stimulus is going to be the tip of my pen here. Do you see that? >> Yep. >> All right. So, I'm going to have you follow this stimulus. I want you to maintain the position you're in while you do so. Follow with only your eyes, not your head. You know what I mean by that? Okay. >> Touching the heel to the toe. >> That doesn't matter. >> What doesn't matter? >> The fact that I'm not stable. >> I didn't say you weren't stable. >> My foot. Don't you see that? It's >> okay. Are you able to complete this exercise? >> No, I'm not. >> Why not? >> Because my foot is >> Well, like I said, we're giving you the opportunity to do the exercises. It doesn't work because MY FOOT IS [ __ ] >> Can't do this exercise. >> Okay. >> All right. I'm gonna read you the instructions. Place your left foot on the line. >> Damn it. >> Place your left foot on the line. Place your right foot on the line ahead of your left foot. With the heel of your right foot against the toe of your left foot, put your arms down at your side. So, it's going to look like this. >> Yeah. >> Look down at me for I don't need to look at your >> I'm not asking for that. For reference. >> What the >> Are you going to listen to the instructions? >> You're not going to listen to my instructions. What do you want me to goddamn do? >> But you're not listening to my instructions >> because it doesn't work. God damn it. I already showed you THAT I COULD [ __ ] FOCUS. Let's do THE NEXT ONE. IF THAT ONE DOESN'T WORK, WE'LL move on. >> All right, let's do THE NEXT EXERCISE. >> NO, I WANT TO DO this exercise. No, I'm not going to go back to it. Moving on. >> My kid is looking at me and it's not your kid. [ __ ] it. >> As expected, she failed the test. When it ended, the handcuffs were secured. >> Deputy Osborne, he's going to read the instructions. >> You're going to read the instructions for the next exercise. All right. Listen. Please stand with your feet together with your arms by your side, just like this. Okay? If you need to, you can look at me for the reference. >> What? >> Feet together, hands at your side. Do not start the exercise until I tell you to do so. Do you understand so far? >> Yes. >> Okay. When I tell you to do so, I want you to raise one leg off the ground. Either leg, it's up to you which one you want to do. You to raise it 6 in off the ground. About the height of a soda can. No. In front of you like this with your toes pointed forward. You see >> it? Does it matter what you want? What do you want? >> Do you want to do these exercises or not? >> No, I'm not. Yes, I am. Okay, fine. Yes, I am. Yes, I am. >> Yes, I am. Yes, I am. >> Yes, I am. If you're lucky is very patient, too, cuz I told you from the beginning. Listen, if you don't tell me what your kids names are, I'm going to have to make an announcement and the children are going to have to come up in front of other children because you can't give me their name. >> We're standing up. We're standing up. Let's go. Please look at me. Can I do the test? Can I do the test again? >> We already did the test. >> We already did the test. >> No, no, no, no, no, no, no. >> Listen, I didn't want to listen, but I will listen now. >> The mother was arrested for DUI with a passenger under 18 in the vehicle. Under Florida law, she could face up to 9 months in prison, a license suspension of 180 days to 1 year, and a fine of up to $1,000. Bail typically ranges from $500 to $2,000. According to court records, she was held overnight and released on bond the following morning. This video not only warns of the dangers of drinking and driving, but also serves as a stern reminder of parental responsibility. No matter how painful it is, don't let your pain become a danger to your children and others. But Florida isn't the last chapter. And isn't only from the Sometimes it comes from leaving a child in the cold rain on an Ohio highway. Yeah, I just saw my mom. She just passed by. >> On February 8th, 2025, Beaver Creek police received an emergency call about a 13-year-old boy walking alone on the highway in freezing rain. When they arrived, they found him shivering in the cold, still refusing to explain, [music] saying, "I don't want my mom to get in trouble." >> How old are you? You're not in trouble. >> How old are you? >> Did your parents know you're out here? >> Yeah, I'm really close to him. >> That's the only reason we were called is cuz it's real dangerous. It's rainy and there's cars driving past. Where's Where's home? >> You want to get my mom in trouble? >> What's that? >> You want to get my mom in trouble? >> I'm going to get your mom in trouble. I just want you to get home safely. Give me one second. I'm going to turn my rear lights off. Yeah, you're not in trouble. I just don't want you to buy a car. It's raining and get my mom in trouble. >> Is there a reason your mom in trouble? She doing okay. >> Okay. So, now >> Okay. So, did you run away today or how'd you end up out here in the rain? It's cold. Yeah, I was uh we meet the second and she got close and so I asked her okay and she really didn't want me to. >> Okay. >> But I said and she's been following me. She knows where I am. >> Is she out here looking for you? >> She's not looking for me. She knows the path I was chasing but she >> Okay. >> Okay. Um here. Let me get you out of the cold. I'll get you home. Okay. That's all I'm worried about. I want to get you home. Okay. It's almost below freezing. You're soaking wet. Are you cold? >> Not really. >> Not really. After a moment of silence, the boy spoke, beginning to tell the whole story. >> What's your mom's name? >> I know her number, too. >> I think I've met her. I think I've met her before. Do you stay with your grandparents sometimes? >> Yeah. >> I was actually out there with you that day. Do you Do you remember me talking to you? >> Okay. Yeah, I remember. I was out with you guys. You doing okay? >> We're doing okay. We >> You live with your mom full time now. Are you still >> Yeah, we we live with my mom full time now. We got it cleaned up and we doing pretty good. >> Okay, that's good. You feeling all right? You're >> Yeah. >> So, again, so tell me again how you ended up here. So, I just wanted a break because I was yelling at her and saying stuff I didn't want to get her angry. Okay. And then I just asked if I could walk and then she didn't want me to. But um so then she's been like following me like she's parked there. She's asking make sure I'm okay and all that stuff. >> So what where did you get out of the car? Do you remember like what business you were by or what street you were by? >> I don't know where it was. So you go there, you turn left and there's a bypass. It was almost around there. >> Did she pass you or did she did she turn a different direction? She's been like going and stopping around me like she's making sure. Yeah. Like she's always been around. >> Do you know where she's at now? >> I don't like I'm assuming she's like parked up right on this first road or at home. Normally she like does it and she like stops like at like a good spot that's like public and she stopped to make sure I'm okay. I'm pretty sure she sounded like she really wanted me to get in and probably by um Yeah, she made sure. >> Okay. So you guys got in a little argument or you were mad about what happens then you got >> I didn't want to cuz I was >> Did you ask to be get out of the car? >> Yeah. said hurtful things and I didn't want to say more. I asked her to step out and she was reluctant and didn't really want me to, but she made sure I put on everything and then I had a cold and then she's been watching me, stopping me, making sure I'm okay and stuff like that. >> Shockingly, this wasn't the first time police had encountered him. They had previously found him in a messy, unsanitary home. >> Were you out with me on that call where we almost busted through the door because the flies were in the windows and turned out she actually lived there. Were you out with me on that? It was Sean. So, we opened a CPS case on this mom because for deplorable conditions cuz the house was there was like animals lying around and we thought she somebody was dead in there. It was so bad. So, this is her kid cuz I recognized him. They got in some argument. She dumped him out of the car at the bike path on Graange Hall and drove home, left him to walk. He's soaking wet. This is the second time we've been called for. No parent in their right mind would. He realized he forgot his cell phone in the car and she drove by and held it up to show him that she had it and kept driving. Left him. He might be on the spectrum or have some autism I think is is in the history. He seems okay. He doesn't seem injured in any way, but he's walking along 835, you know, a high-speed road with no sidewalk in this weather. He's soaking wet. I don't think any parent in their right mind would dump their kid on a busy road like this and have have him walk miles home in the rain and the cold. >> At the same time, the mother quietly went to find her child. >> So, okay. >> Yeah, I just saw my mom. She just passed by. >> She just passed by? >> Yeah. I was about to get out, but I didn't. >> Okay. She She went that way. >> She was coming this way. Coming back. >> She was looking for you. >> Yeah, I think she looked at us and I think she might know with me, but I'm not sure. >> She might be turning back around. >> Yeah, she might be. I don't know. >> And explained. But the truth emerged. This wasn't the first time she had left her child alone on the highway. >> Yep. Yep, we do. I don't know if you remember. I was I was out with you guys before we were at your house on straight arrow. >> Yeah. >> We found him running running along the road, right? >> Yes. >> Okay. Um, go ahead. I got all his fight. Go ahead and explain to me why. He was in a really angry mood about a competition that we had been at. He was bursting at me. He was trying to jump out of the car. Okay. >> I was getting concerned about him and so he pulled over. He got out of the car and he's been walking home and I've come up on him multiple times and said, "Come on, get in the car if you want." >> Okay. >> Has this happened before? >> Yes. >> So, I've been out here with him for probably 20 minutes. Where Where have you been during that? >> I was trying to find him. I didn't know. >> So, how did he end up out of your sight? because he was walking this way and turn around and come on back. I wasn't sure. >> You should have followed him slowly. Okay. And why not? >> I was trying to give him some space to cool down. >> Okay. So, I know last time I was out with you guys, he's staying with my grandparents part time. Has he been with you full time for a while? >> Yes. And he's really been doing well. This is the first year recently with his brother where he told me he's been googling things like that. So, uh, that's what he was doing today. >> Today he had discussion. He's Googling ways to commit. >> Well, today he didn't talk about that. He was saying that he was the first two. >> Okay. So, he's 13. He says he's better off. Yeah. You know how it sounds. You're leaving him in 30° weather in the rain to walk miles home. He's out of your sight for 20 plus minutes. >> He's a the juvenile on the on the younger side on a busy highway with no sidewalk. >> Yes. I thought he had as you let him out of your sight. >> He said that while he's been walking in this, he's seen you pass by a few times and not stopped. >> I have stopped every single >> But before you said you didn't know he was here, you thought he was on Grand. >> I haven't stopped him on this road. >> I'm going to make a call to our supervisor. Okay. I'm not I'm not going to release him to you yet. What I'm going to have you do is go sit in your car. We're going to pull over there and get off the road. Just kind of decide how we want to handle it, right? Because it's it's kind of an unusual situation. I know there's there's history you have with CPS, right? Is there still an open case? >> It's been closed. This road has no sidewalk. What's the reason you let him out of your view? Why did you drive away? >> To be honest, make a little bit of an impact on him that >> make him feel like you might leave him. >> Not that I would I would never leave him, but he's shown me like better off without me. And so I was like, well, let me let him out of his sight for a little bit and just let that kind of reality take. >> If that makes sense. Not that I was never going to come back, but just to kind of make a little bit of impression because there was nothing to say. >> Okay. >> So, the police immediately made her understand the serious consequences of her actions. >> So, maybe a bit of poor judgment cuz you know, we got the no sidewalks and the weather, right? It's inherently dangerous walking along this road. I'm not even sure if it's legal for an adult to run along this road. It's considered a highway. >> Yeah, it is considered a highway. And also the u he could be picked up by a stranger. He was out of your sight for an extended period of time, right? >> He could have been gone and you never would have known. He's a nice kid, right? I've talked to him. He's always smiling. He's always friendly. Did you consider the possibility of a stranger rolling up? Hey, let me get you help. And then you never see him again. >> But I didn't know that you had him at first until I thought about that. >> I've been scared looking for him, but I thought he was okay. And then I couldn't find him. I started to get really really >> Okay, go ahead and have a seat in your car. We're going to get off the road. We'll pull into the entrance over there. >> Just stay there. We'll pull over there and get off the road just so we're not walking traffic. >> Although it was a minor incident, [music] the mother was arrested and held on a childment charge misdemeanor. Under Ohio law, she could face up to 6 months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. Bail ranges from $1,000 to $10,000. [music] According to court records, she was held for two nights. CPS reopened the investigation and the case is still ongoing. >> I'm going to release him back to you in a second. Okay. I'm going to talk to him. I want him to hear everything I'm saying. Okay. I called a supervisor and discuss the situation. Okay. What we're going to do is issue a criminal summon for charge what the mandatory court did. Okay. You're not going to jail. It's a misdemeanor, but based on so kind of what I you discussed with you a little bit, the facts of the situation, his his age, the location and the roadways involved, the temperature, the weather, um the fact that he was out of view for an extended period of time that we had to be called out by a stranger like to to find him. All of those things are taken into account, right? Um so the citation be issued essentially is called trying for a lapse of due care that you're responsible for because he's in your custody. Okay. Any questions about that? Again, it's Yeah, I'm gonna send him over to you in a second. I just wanted to again I told him, you know, he's he's worried about about you, right? You're his mom. So, um tell him you're not going to jail. Nobody's in trouble. So, I told him cuz this is between you and us and the court. He doesn't have to know. There's no reason for that. Okay. It is going to open up another another CPS case. Okay. So, is that is the the previous one? Is that the first one? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. So, this would be the second one. >> So, here's what I just called Fred cuz all this stuff's new to me. All right. He said if we can find someone to watch watch the kid um that we need to actually lock her up. So we actually need to just write her a ticket, lock her up. It'll be the next day, next available court date 11:00 a.m. What we can do is we could follow her back to the house. That way she can drop her car away. We don't have to tow it. Release the child back to the grandpa and then and then hook her. Okay. >> [laughter] >> You can probably go in grandpa's car now if you want. >> Grandpa knows he's going to take it from there. >> While tension between parents and children can happen. Leaving a child alone in a dangerous situation is neither a proper solution nor a correct way to teach as it can [music] cause both physical and emotional harm.
