Come >> [music] >> here, baby. You hate my life. Take me TO JAIL. STOP. IT HURTS. This hurts. [laughter] >> In a world full of pressure, adults sometimes [music] lose focus at the most critical moments. >> Yeah. Cover yourself in me going to jail today for child. >> Okay, that's fine. I ain't never been in trouble before. >> A child's world is simple. An adult's world is not. When these two worlds collide, the police highlight the responsibilities of adults. A single thoughtless action, a car left under the midday sun, and a parent leaving everyone wondering, was this a mistake or serious oversight? >> She brought a kid outside. She came back in. She brought she came outside again, but I wasn't aware if she like came back in or not again. On July 19th, 2024, police were dispatched to the parking lot of Regal Cinema in Lake City, [music] Florida. After a report of a 2-year-old girl left in a car without adult supervision, the outside temperature reached 34° C, 93° [music] F. The air conditioning was off and the doors were locked. All clear signs of potential risk for a young child. Police arrived promptly, opened the car, and coordinated with a rescue team to ensure the child's safety. And my siblings just got here and I had to go get my phone. >> You got a uh punch. She's been there for like 30 minutes already. >> You got one. Go ahead. >> I know. Baby, >> go other side. Other side. Other side. Is that fire? Fire. Child's been in the car for about 30 minutes. Uh vehicle's not running in the heat. Come here, baby. >> You saying it's 30 minutes, ma'am? >> Hey, come here. >> Why would you wait 30 minutes to call us? >> Okay. >> I was trying to get her to open. >> I know. Come here, baby. I didn't have my phone. >> Yeah, you guys can go ahead and go with it. >> You can hang tight for a second. Talk to this officer right here. He's going to get some information from >> go. You need to go get her 43. >> Yeah. Degree of annoyance. She waited 30 minutes to call. Like what? >> 30 minutes. >> 30 minutes. >> 30 minutes in the car. >> No AC. >> No AC, no nothing. Why? >> She said she she was trying to get her to unlock the door and she left her phone in the theater and she didn't want to run back in to get it. >> Are you serious? >> So So serious right now. >> Is she hot to the cut? So EMS is saying she's she's she's >> Yeah, we will document and report. >> Yeah. >> We got her already. >> Even more concerning was [music] the parents reaction. She showed little visible worry as her child was taken to the hospital, speaking [music] calmly and acting as if nothing serious had happened. >> Can I go around this way? >> I don't know if it's open. You can you want to stand? It's not open. They're trying to keep this. There's AC in there. They're trying to keep the air inside cuz she's hot. >> I just wanted to make sure cuz I know I didn't call instantly cuz I was trying to get her to open the door. I didn't have my phone on me. My phone was stuck inside the theater. And >> what do you mean stuck? Like >> like it was inside. I didn't have nobody was out here to help me like call or anybody. And she was fine. Like she was okay in the beginning. >> So the theater's open. Why would you not walk up to the window right there and tell them to call 911 for you? cuz I was trying to get her to open the door cuz in the beginning she was fine. She was laughing. She was playing. I was like, >> but after 30 minutes and over 100 degrees, how do you think that's going to affect her? Do you understand what I'm saying? You understand what I'm getting at? >> I understand what you're saying. I understand what you're getting at. But I'm trying to tell you it's >> My first name is T I O R. She so she's up here at the theater for whatever reason. I'm assuming to watch a movie. She herself in the car. So instead of and her phone is already inside the theater somehow, but the baby never made it into the theater. So baby locks herself inside the car. So instead of calling 911 immediately or going to someone help from the window, she tries to get the baby to unlock the door. So baby's not unlocking the door. So, she doesn't want to leave the baby to go inside to get her phone to call 911. Doesn't want to walk up to the window to get the concentrated to call 911. So, instead waits 30 minutes with this child in this not running hot car >> standing there at the window trying to talk to baby and unlocking the door. >> So, her phone is up there. >> Her phone's in the theater. She has it now. I think it's I think No, it might be her wallet. But yeah, 30 minutes talked to EMS. The baby was obviously in distress. The baby was screaming, crying. Maybe it's hot to the touch. Maybe one. >> You can't GET MY BOY ON THE DAMN DOOR. >> YEAH, we had the window. >> She's hot. She was Yeah, she's she's in the back there working on the truck. >> Yeah, she she was pretty hot. 20 minutes. >> Yeah. Straight up. >> She's so non acting like it's nothing. Like her story is making sense to her. She can't even realize. >> Hey, for the report, you want to ask dispatch to get a the current temperature outside to put it in the call for you. >> Yes. Just ask the radio. >> They transport. >> Okay. >> I got to I'm going to have to go. Oh, shoot. Absolutely. Absolutely. >> I get in my truck to go see her. >> Who is Is this This is your son or who he is? >> That's my brother. >> This is your brother? Yes. >> Is there another adult here with the car? >> No. >> Please. No. Not right now. Not right now. About to go ahead and have him hook her up cuz she's getting more agitated. I don't want any issues. She's 100% sure needs to go to jail. >> What do you think? >> Yeah, do that. >> You want to go ahead and advise her that she's going to be 10:15 and >> Yeah. Go ahead. Turn off. Gosh. >> Yeah. Did you me going to jail today for >> Okay, that's fine. Is anybody So she was inside with the baby and brought the baby out to the car >> halfway through the movie or something like what was that? >> That's what I'm But when they started telling me I was like hold on cuz this is some pertinent information. >> You going to need tug man. Hold on. >> Well, he's getting a number for the child's father. >> Okay, we need parents for them other two as well cuz they only 12 and 12 and 13 or 12 and 14. According to police, the parent went in [music] and out of the theater multiple times and on the last occasion left the car keys inside without the child. >> So, she brought the baby in or >> I did not witness any of it, but I asked them if they saw anything and so they did say they saw some stuff. So, >> I'm assuming they were watching a movie. They came out to the lobby kind of deal. The kid was kind of like walking around the lobby and stuff. So, I noticed that she brought a kid outside. She came back in. She brought she came outside again, but I wasn't aware if she like came back in or not again. >> So, when she came out, she had the baby with her. >> Did she come back in with the baby or was the baby >> first time? No, she came back in again. Not with the baby at all. >> Okay. Did she ever say anything to y'all? >> Never mentioned like >> she didn't she didn't notice us at all. Like, she >> Okay. Did she look like she was in a panic or anything like that or didn't look like she was in any type of distress? Were the other children the other kids, those two older ones, were they with y'all when that happened or with her when that happened? I'm sorry. They were not Were they still in the movie or >> I do not I don't recall seeing >> I saw the boy in the green shorts walk out like twice but didn't see a child >> and none of them said >> none of them said anything to us. They kind of just were walking in for hours all the time. Like I saw them standing next to their car and I'm thinking it looked from where I was. It looked like the windows down. They were chitchatting with whoever was in the vehicle. So I'm thinking nothing of it cuz that happens all the time. So >> what was the time frame there? >> That would have been about 30 minutes ago that I saw the boy walking in and out. Huh? >> When was the last time you seen the child her she walked out with the child? >> I could guess 20 30 minutes. I don't know. >> Probably what she said about 30 minute timelapse. The baby was and the baby was already hot to the touch. So >> that's been there for a baby inside the the movie theater and she sent her brother out here back to go check on >> that's what that's so >> sorry. Let me walk away real quick. So basically, um, this lady, she's in there watching, what I'm gathering is she's in there watching the movie, and I'm thinking that maybe the baby was showing out during the movie. So, and it's a little baby. She's maybe she's about to turn. So, she brings the baby out here to the car um, and puts the baby in the car unintentionally. I think unintentionally locks the baby in the car, but a 30inut time lapse goes by where she is trying to coach the the 2-year-old, the one-year-old to unlock the door, which is not going to happen cuz she's one. And the from what the theater is saying, she had come back into the theater twice after the baby was already locked in the car. Did not appear to be any did not appear to be under any type of distress and never once asked him to summon for help for the baby that was in the car. And the baby was obviously in distress. The baby was obviously in distress. Yes, she was sweaty. She was beat red. She was Oh, no. She's going to jail right at like 100% going to jail. >> The theater staff confirmed the incident. No one saw her ask for help or show concern. and her initial statement could not be verified. >> Okay. Did she come in and say anything to you or >> Okay. Nothing at all. >> No. Uh she and then walked back into the theater or down the hallway at least. And then she stopped and then she walked back out. >> Yeah. She crying in the theater. So she brought the kid outside to >> Okay. to go to the truck and then from what she states is that she was outside and the door closed. Yeah. cuz she walked out with the baby and then she walked back in and I didn't see the baby. >> Excuse me. Did she go back into the theater? >> I don't know where she went after that. I mean, I know she went down the hallway. >> Okay. So, she completely passed all the way through all the way down the hall. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Did she seem like she was in a hurry or >> No, we just kind of walked back there. She like she looked kind of like her face looked like she was kind of just done >> and exhausted. I don't know. >> Okay. I mean, she never said anything to you or did she ever at any point come up and try to get you guys to call us or No. Okay. >> You seem to walk back in. Did you see her again after that or the kids that were? >> I didn't know that they were with her, but I did see a couple that look like they're teenagers maybe like kind of run out. >> I don't think they were with her. >> About how long between when she went back there and when they all came right out? There's maybe like 5 to 10 minutes. >> Okay. >> I don't know. I'm better than Yeah. And then they kind of were in and out here a few times. >> All right. >> I knew there was a new Fantastic 4 movie, but >> Okay. Okay. So, all right. So, this based off of this, if you could just just kind of give me another just another like explanation of Yeah. what you seen, what what you saw. >> What a Yeah, that's just basically about it. She walked in here with She was over there, walked out here. baby was like messing around with the toys and stuff. >> Okay. >> She uh I noticed she went back when she went outside with the baby. She came back in and out like I think once or twice, >> right? >> No baby with her the uh first time. >> Okay. >> I didn't know where the baby was. I don't know. I didn't know if she went to go watch her movie again. >> And that's kind of all I picked up. She seemed incredibly neutral, so I didn't really think anything was up or anything kind of. >> Okay. And if you had to estimate about the same like the time frame >> again about 30 40 minutes ago kind of deal. >> Okay. >> After the incident, police [music] contacted the child's father to pick her up. He mentioned that the parent sometimes struggles with decision-m when under stress [music] and can lose patience. >> Sorry. Step out. Walk over to their table. Jere M R apostrophe Jackson. I mean, not apostrophe. M E R R I H I Jackson. >> The mother has been charged with [music] child. Under Florida law, she could face up to 5 years of probation or prison along with a $5,000 fine. Hopefully [music] after this story, every parent will pay closer attention to even the smallest decisions as children's safety must always come first. From a swerving tire track, the story of a mother struggling with her own stress began to emerge in small details. >> Well, it seems like a little bit dangerous to GO FROM 0 TO 36. ON September 29th, 2024, Woodstock, Illinois, police received a call about a woman driving erratically, changing lanes, and veering off course, creating potential risk for herself and others. When police arrived, they found two children asleep in the car. The mother, behaving unusually, still insisted she was fine. >> Good evening. How are you? >> Hi. It would be better if you didn't have such bright lights on me. >> I understand that. Do you have your driver's license insurance on you? >> I'm going to find that. And I was talking to my husband who doesn't help me out with anything. >> Okay. About >> life. >> Oh, I got you. Oh, you you're on the phone. >> I was on the phone. >> Okay. >> Get on my phone and find my and find my insurance card. >> Perfect. Thank you. What uh company do you have? uh progressive. >> Where are we coming from tonight? >> I I'm just local. I just got to get back to feed my horses. >> Oh, I got you. >> Okay. I can't service that are these your kiddos in the back. >> Yes. >> And I got two of them. >> Oh, they're they're sleeping. We don't have to roll the window down. I was just curious. >> I actually have the thing saved. >> Okay. Do you know why I stopped you tonight? >> No. Well, so first thing you turned left on a red arrow there at 14 and 47 and then you were all over the road. You crossed the yellow line. You were almost in the ditch with the whole truck and you came back in and out. You're riding the grass. >> Yeah, I'm sorry. I was I multitask on a regular basis. >> Okay. >> Sorry. >> Okay. >> But I can get those. Let me go to my email. >> Okay. Do you smell the weed from here? Is that coming from here? I smell it coming walking up. I think it's I'm calling crazy. I think it's the correct. >> Okay. No, >> that >> Okay. Mr. Durk, is that how you pronounce your last name? I'm sorry. Dirks. Dirks. >> Yeah. >> Which one? >> Dirks. >> Okay. Miss Dirks. Uh, let me ask let me ask you. Oh, okay. >> Got the one there for the truck. But there's that back. Let me ask you a question. Have you had any alcohol that any of any kind? >> No. >> Okay. What's got you what's got you driving like that? >> Well, I have two kids that are just constantly uh out of my case and always asking me for things. >> Okay. Did you Did you realize that you were all the way over the shoulder in the grass driving down Route 14 at any point? >> Uh yeah, >> you did? >> Yeah. >> Okay. How'd that happen? trying to navigate my two toddlers. >> Okay. What were you doing that with your two toddlers that got you off the road multiple times? >> Uh picking up trying to find um their tablets. >> Okay. You usually have motor skill issues. I noticed you dropped a couple of things while you were talking to me. I'm just worried that we're okay to make it home while we got two kids in the back of the car. >> I promise you I will be >> Okay. Um, did you know that you turn left on a red arrow? >> I thought I made it just in time. >> It was pretty solid red when we went through, but um, but you recognize that it was red at some point. I got you. Okay. All right. Give me one second. I'll be right back with you. Okay. >> Thank you. >> From the first moments on scene, police noticed some unusual signs in the car and around the area. Yeah. Smell it right here. I think we >> as soon as I got that out, that's all I can smell like right here. >> Yeah. On the way walking up to your car. Yes. >> But I don't smell anything there. >> Smell that. >> I don't smell that. >> Oh, yeah. A little bit. >> What do you think? There's a bottle on the lower over here. >> Correct. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. All her purse is in the way, but I can see it's like a Yeah. glass bottle with a green top. You could tell that it's if it's open, but >> Yeah, dude. That's what it is. >> Smell a little more distinct back there. >> Yeah, but look how there's tons of it. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Just cover yourself in that. Take your hand. Go like that and smell your hand. >> Oh, yeah. >> Yeah. Kind of like minty. Did you uh pick up the double? >> Yeah. Yeah. Well, I thought it was pretty ID tech. >> So, I was like, "Oh, I'll jump on that, too." I was like, "Is this caught for it?" I just saw it on the tech when I was signing up for this one. I was like started dropping all his stuff because >> I'll Still killer. These observations prompted further checks to ensure safety. Basic assessments were conducted on the mother. Hi, Mr. Oh, what'd you get there? >> I put my ring on last night. That was too tight. >> Oh, is it swollen? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Um, let me ask you, are you particularly tired or anything right now? >> I'm always tired. >> Okay. Um, cuz like I said with with what I noticed the the driving seems like you got some motor skill issues. Okay. Your eyes are a little glassy. I'm worried that you're okay to drive cuz what I saw was D. I just want to make sure we're good. So, so you're more tired than in particular today? >> I am. >> Okay. >> If you want to follow me to where I'm going, I'd be happy to. That'd be that'd be >> Sure. Sure. First thing, first thing I want to do is just make sure that we're able to get there cuz from what I just saw, I don't think you are able to get there. So, what I have you do real quick, um, it's called a finger dexterity test. I'm going to demonstrate it for you and then I'll have you complete it. Wait till I'm done with the instruction. But what you're going to do is you're going to touch your thumb to the tip of each finger and you're going to count out loud one to four and then you're going to go backwards. You're going to do the test twice. 1 2 3 4 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 4 3 2 one. Tell you to start. I want you to touch your thumb to the tip of each finger and then count the number out loud each time forward and backwards twice. Do you have any questions about that test as I've explained it to you so far? >> Nope. >> Okay, you can begin. >> 1 2 3 4 4 3 2 1 2 3 4 4 3 2 >> Okay. 1 2 3 4 4 3 2 1 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 3 2 1 >> Okay. All right. All right. So, hope you on the phone. Uh, were you were you texting on the phone or talking on the phone? You said you were something with your husband or >> Oh, I don't know. I always >> Gotcha. Gotcha. Okay. What I want you to do is if you can step out of the vehicle for me and come talk to me back here real quick. Okay. Uh can you just keep a window back down so they can check on the kiddos? Make sure everybody's okay while we're standing back there. Perfect. All right. Then just ride here so we're out of traffic and we're safe. Okay. All right. So you haven't had any alcohol any alcohol tonight? No medications? Nothing like that. Right now it seems that you are impaired. Okay. Uh and I just I want to make sure we make it home. Okay. Especially with the kids in the back. Your kid, right? Son and daughter. Okay. Um, and then you were you were leaving the Madison house going to check on the horses right now? >> Yep. >> Okay. Okay. All right. So, I want to run you through a couple of tests. I just want to make sure you make it home. I'm worried about you and the kids. Okay. Once we get done with that, we can be on our way. Sound good? All right. Yeah. Just stand right there for a second. I'm for a second. I'm going to back my car up a little bit so we're in a safe spot here. >> Standard coordination and focus tests were administered. Results indicated that her attention and coordination were compromised, posing a potential risk to herself and the children in the car. All right, Miss Dirks, the first thing I want to test is your eyes. Okay, I'm going to give you some simple instructions. While I do that, can I have you stand with your feet together and your hands at your side and just remain in this position while I give you the rest of the instructions? You understand that so far? >> Yeah. >> Okay. First of all, do you have any eye problems or abnormalities? >> I wear contacts. >> Okay. Are you wearing contacts? >> Okay. Are you wearing contacts now? >> Yeah. >> Perfect. Can you just keep your hands to your sides, please? >> Uh, how's your overall general health today? >> Good. >> Okay. Well, we said you're wearing your contacts now. Perfect. All right. So, what I want you to do is with your eyes and your eyes only, I want you to follow the tip of this pen here. Okay? With your eyes and your eyes only. Okay? Keep your head still for me. Keep your head still, please. Almost done. Go up. All right. Thank you. >> All right. Do you have any physical problems or disabilities? Nope. Okay. Uh, let's stand up here on the pavement where it's more solid and you can take a step and you can take a step back towards your truck a little bit. Perfect. Um, for the instruction portion of this test, what I want you to do is picture an imaginary straight line between you that goes all the way to the front of my car. Okay. What I want you to do is I want you to place your right foot on that imaginary line and place your left foot in front of your right foot with your hands at your sides. Okay? So, you can get in that position for me, please. Um, and you have your left heel touching your right toe. Perfect. Stay in that position until I'm done with the instructions. Do you understand that so far? Got it. >> Okay. When I say begin, what I want you to do is take a series of nine. Okay. Let's take a series of nine heel toe steps down. Heel toe steps down that line. When you get to the end, I want you to take a series of small steps, keeping that lead foot planted. And you're going to take nine heel to Okay. It's going to look like this. One, two, three. I took three. You're going to take nine. Keeping that lead foot planted, you're going to take a series of small steps and take nine to heel toe steps back. One, two, three. Again, I took three. I want you to take nine. I want you to count out loud at all times. Keep your hands at your sides at all times and look at your feet at all times. Do you understand the instructions I given you so far? You so far? >> Okay, you may begin. Oops. 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. 1 2 5 7 8 9 You can stand right back uh here for me and keep your hands at your side like the first test and your feet together while I give the instructions. You understand those instructions so far? >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Okay. Hands at your sides, please. All right. All right. But when I tell you to start, and only when I tell you to start, I want you to raise one leg, either leg with your foot appro with your foot approximately 6 in off the ground. It'll look like this. Keeping both legs straight with your arms at your sides while holding that position, I want you to count out loud in the following manner. 1,002,000 3,0004 and so on. So again, it's going to look like this. 1,00 1,002,002 10003 1,0004, 105 and so on until I tell you to uh during the test I want you to keep your arms at your sides at all times. I want you to keep your legs straight at all times. Look at your foot at all times and count out loud at all times if you understand the instructions I've given you so far. You need time for me once they tell you to begin. Okay, you can begin. Mark, >> please don't lean on your truck. Count out loud for me. >> 1 >> You cannot lean on your truck. >> 2 3 4 5 6 7 10. >> Keep going till I tell you to stop. Oh. 11. >> All right, you can stop. All right, come on over here so we're out of traffic for me. The priority was to find a trusted family member to care for the children. The maternal grandmother was identified as the safest option. >> All right, Miss Dirks, at this point it does appear that you're impaired by something. You're telling me you haven't had any alcohol tonight? >> No. >> Okay. From what I've seen, you are you are too impaired to drive. Okay. Um, that being said, you have two small children in a car with you. Is there somebody who can drive them home safely? Cuz at this point, I don't think you're capable of doing that. >> You >> I can't do that. No, I don't have car seats. Um, your husband, is that a possibility? >> Are you going to take me to jail? >> Yes. At this point, you were driving under the influence. I've determined that you were too impaired to drive and you definitely can't be driving with the kids. Uh not to jail, to the police department and back home. But in the meantime, is there somebody who can watch your children? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. Is uh for your phone in the car? Hold on. Hold on. >> You mind if we grab it so you don't >> just cuz of traffic? Is that okay? >> Go ahead. >> Thank you. >> Is he close by? Do you know? >> Yeah. Okay. >> This will just um make my divorce go quicker. >> Is there anything illegal in the car right now? No open alcohol or anything? >> No, you could talk to him. >> Nope. >> Okay. >> Not uh >> Hello. >> Hi, this is Officer G with the Woodstock Police Department. I'm here with Miss Dirk. Yes. >> Um so we are currently at Route 14 between 47 and Dean. Um are these your children that are with her? >> It's on it's on Bluetooth. >> Oh, can can you hear me now, sir? It hooked up to the Bluetooth. Hooked up to the Bluetooth. Um uh so I'm asking uh so I'm asking I'm at 14 between Dean and 47 with Miss Dirks. Are these your children that are with her? Um is there a chance that you could come Okay, that that's fine. Um, but she can come take them in the car. Okay, perfect. Uh, so we're on route 14 between 47 and Dean. Mhm. Okay. Um, that being said, uh, about how far do you think she's coming from? Okay. Yeah. Not that it's a rush. I just I just want to know to to make sure um I know when they're coming. Yeah. No, no rush. Don't please don't hurry. Correct. And then just for my information so we don't turn them over to the wrong people, we'll be waiting here for her and then uh I'll turn the children over to her. Okay. Thank you. >> You going 52? >> Hm. >> 52. >> The mother disagreed with this choice due to personal conflicts and difficulties in family relationships. >> I'm sorry, not 51. >> Yeah. Yeah. Uh, >> stop talking to my kid. >> It's nothing. It's nothing. We have to rush. Uh, mother-in-law will be here in 5 minutes to grab it. All right. Here's your phone, babe. >> I don't want my mother to >> I mean, you asked me to call him and that's that's who's coming. So >> Oh. Oh, no. >> Well, you don't really have a choice in that right now. Why can't No, you're you're a mother. Yeah. Right. You don't you don't want that? >> Absolutely not. >> Why is that? >> Because they alling judge me for everything I do and Iinging to take care of everybody. >> Okay. I'm just looking for somebody responsible who can grab your kids. He's a dad and he can't come get him. >> I I don't know why. I mean, does he have work? Has he been drinking? >> I I don't know. I don't know >> what you're sending my [ __ ] mom over here. >> Pieces of hate my life. Take me to jail. >> You do whatever you want with these kids. I don't relax. Relax. Relax. STOP. STOP. YOU DON'T GO. YOU GUYS know what I have to do every day. I just I don't I don't You don't have to do that. >> I am not. Don't you don't have to do that. >> Yeah. You're under arrest. >> You don't have to do that. >> Okay. Let's go back to your children. Don't see this. Okay. >> You don't don't have to do I do cuz you're under arrest and you're being belligerent and you've almost run into traffic three times. So, let's act right while your daughter is watching you. Please, I don't want to do this to your kids. So, please act right. >> Thank you. >> Don't make me do this to them. >> Gotcha. Can't see it. Gotcha. >> Do you have anything illegal on you right now? Under Illinois law, she may face up to two years in prison and a $4,000 fine along with other related penalties. The tense and defiant behavior of the adult highlights an important lesson. Children are always watching and are directly affected by how adults handle stress and responsibility. >> I guess she's I guess climbed on that bike. I'm not sure how she unlocked this. It's always locked. >> The line between an understandable reason and a serious oversight can be as thin as the door the mother claimed was always locked. On October 31st, 2024, police were called after a report of children left unsupervised outside. A toddler learning basic independence was found without supervision while her siblings remained inside. At the scene, the mother confused officers by insisting the door was always locked. Yet, the child still managed to get out. >> Here's going to read you something real quick. >> Hello. >> And then we'll talk about it. All right. >> All righty. You have anything you can say? Can be used against you in a court of law. You also have the right to stop answering any time until you speak with a lawyer. You understand these rights? I got you. So, uh, how long have you been living uh living here? >> Since December. >> Okay. What happened today? You mind walking me through the course of events? >> So, they were sleeping. I didn't know she knew how to unlock door, but I open the door. I was getting him. I guess she opened the door >> and then I guess she's I guess climbed on that bike. I'm not sure how she unlocked this. It's always locked. Both of them are locked. I got cameras and everything. >> Keep everything locked. >> Pretty well secured. >> Yeah. cuz I'm not sure how she opened the door. Only thing she was is because she in the middle of potty training and so I guess she peed on herself and she took her pants off. >> Gotcha. >> And so that's I guess that's why she was >> Okay. What time did you uh give them the drinks and the Cheetos? >> About 1:00. >> Is that when you went to go pick him up? >> Yeah. About 20 25 minutes. >> Gotcha. When do you drive there? >> Oh, that Toyota >> though. The gold Sienna. >> The blue. >> Has that been pretty reliable for you? >> Not really. Seems to be breaking down on it. The AC's that sucks. >> The AC's broken out and so all in here. >> Is that kind of why you left them inside? >> Yeah. Instead of, you know, let them just bake in the sun while I'm waiting on him, they were asleep here real quick. >> I mean, it wasn't wasn't that bad. Have you ever anywhere like prior to this? Like all all three together? Have you ever taken them like all three together? Um they went somewhere? >> Oh, yeah. They >> without the AC. They've been they've been fine. >> Well, usually it's like at night or something if we're going to big places or appointments or something. They're usually always. >> Okay, I got you. >> So 1:00 gave him Cheetos and a drink. Just kind of hung out. You went to go pick and then what time did you get back? >> Oh, you're just approximately asking time. >> Um probably 2:30. >> 2:30. Does anybody normally watch the kids like like friends? >> I don't have anybody. >> You don't have like grandparents or anything like that? >> Don't have anybody? >> No. I don't know. Do you normally have any help with picking them up or or watching them? >> No, I don't get no help. My mom's disabled. She lives in Milton, way out dog wood up there. >> So, she wouldn't be able to to come and help out and watch the kids. >> She can't walk. >> Okay. That's a long drive. >> Yeah. >> All righty. So, you got back at like 2:30ish. And then did anybody call you in between those times? >> Yeah. Miss um Alex in the office called me and everything. >> Is Miss Alex like an employee or? Yeah, I think she's like okay exact she had called me and let me know the I don't know her name in the office. Another helper assistant I think that she had brought back inside for me because they were out here and she didn't know that me and Miss Alex had a conversation. Just a one time thing? >> Yeah, they're sleeping. >> All righty. >> Never went to sleep at night. I totally understand that. Probably don't get enough sleep as it is. >> Yeah. So, all right. >> Sick. So, trying to hurry, get back home, get my nap in. >> Are they good on the couch? Can we try to get him inside the couch? On the couch for me. >> Even if the mother's reason is understandable, the situation created a potential risk, making her responsible. The children were handed over to trusted adults to ensure their safety. >> Hey, dude. You mind coming inside for me? >> Come here real quick. >> I appreciate you. >> Sit down on the couch real quick. >> All right. I appreciate it. Mind set outside for me for a little bit. All right. Put your hands behind your back for me. Explain everything. Explain everything for you. All right. Walk downstairs for me for a little bit. You have anything on you? >> That's my phone. >> Okay. You can take her back out. Whatever. >> All right. All right. >> Can I call my husband in here? >> Yeah. Just give me one second. Okay. All right. Hang on for a second for me.
