Don't cut behind your back. >> There's a a serious serious issue when your artistic four-year-old is walking down 41. >> He's in this car. >> Car's running. >> Some families don't fall apart because of one major crisis, but because of many [music] small things that quietly go unnoticed. >> Why do you take me to jail? Take me to jail. >> This is not the first time. >> When the camera starts rolling, we only see the ending. The moment help arrives, but the beginning where silent challenges are tucked away inside each family [music] is the part we all need to pay attention to. No one wakes up in the morning expecting to become a headline. And no mother wants her child to end up in an unsafe situation. >> About how long were you in there really fast? >> Just like 10 minutes. >> You're a complete liar. Cuz I've been standing here, according to my body cam, for 25 minutes. On November 11th, 2024, responders were called to a parking lot after a report of young children inside a running vehicle without an adult present. They arrived quickly and found several children inside, including a one-year-old. The doors were unlocked and the windows were open, allowing [music] anyone to come close. >> Well, I'm going to hang out with you until your mommy comes. Okay. >> How old are you? >> Seven. Okay. How long has she been gone? a long time. Is that your sister? What's her name? >> Oh, it's your boy. It's a boy. Oh, I didn't even know. Long hair. Okay. Well, [sighs] do you know where you live? >> You don't know where you live? Okay. >> You want to see some fireworks go off? >> Huh? >> How long you got? >> Too long. >> Well, yeah. But I can't even go in there cuz I don't want to leave them alone. And I can't arrest her by myself. So, I'm going to have to have Aaron here. Someone's going to take the kids. Something's going to happen, though. >> At first, it was if it was like 10, 15 minutes. I was like, uh, I don't like it, but she can get a verbal lashing. Now, she's going to get that >> that you could just kind of forward to DCFS. They can take care of >> that's going to happen anyways. >> But in that situation, it didn't have to be. >> She's going to put me on that ticket on uh South Gary. >> Aaron, watch Aaron. Aaron's going to lose. We're both going to lose it on this lady. >> Well, I was like, I had a lady in the fire lane to do something similar at Walmart. She was there for like 15 minutes. She ended up having a warrant for uh >> I looked her I looked this girl up. She's clear. But >> why so far away? >> Huh? >> Why would she park so far away, too? >> But the windows, like at least roll the windows so you can't pull the kid out of the car or they >> like crack all the windows. There's two of them in there. There's a one-year-old in there. bother you with this, but my one, my camera's about to die. Two, the verbal lashing that this mother's about to get and I'm probably going to take her to custody. Is she still not here? >> I've been out here for 23 minutes. This window is like wide open for this kid to just be ripped out of the car. And there's a one-year-old in the back. >> How old is this child? >> He's four. >> He doesn't know his last name. He He gave me his mom's name, Jessica. I was able to find her in WebR. She's clear. >> Um, but I couldn't even go inside to try to find this lady. I didn't want to leave them alone. >> Right. >> I mean, is that like a child abandonment that >> one of the two? >> Well, if it was like 10 minutes. I mean, the window >> was probably a while before that. Yeah, but the windows rolled down this much. >> Is this maybe somebody right here? >> And the one-year-old in the back? >> No, this is somebody right here walking out. >> I have no idea. She seemed young. Uh, it said uh born in 90 or 94, I think. 96. >> It's not that things out of her. >> No, it doesn't. >> When the mother returned, she said [music] she had only gone inside for about 10 minutes to take a child to the restroom and handle a quick task. But to people nearby, that explanation did not ease their concerns. Are you Jessica? >> Are you doing Jessica? Are these your kids? Yes. I just want to take my daughter to the bathroom. >> About how long were you in there? Really fast. >> Just like 10 minutes. >> You're a complete liar. Cuz I've been standing here according to my body cam for 25 minutes. Somebody also called and that call came in about 12 minutes prior to that. So I've been out here for about 37 minutes. Your kids 37 minutes with a semi-truck running. There was like three vans out here sitting and then multiple people have driven past your children. I mean I understand that. >> No, I don't think you do understand. I don't know if you watch the news and what goes on in the world, but these kids could have been taken. Something bad could have happened to them. I mean, that's extremely neglectful. I mean, you got three kids. >> Yes. >> Why did you not take them? >> Well, I mean, the baby was sleeping and I mean, she only had to go to the bathroom really quick. I already had the >> You also went shopping, too? >> Yes, I already have the stuff here and I just needed to take her really I had to go back and take her back in there. She was >> I mean, you've been in there way longer than 10 minutes. It's not even exact. Like, I have a counter right here. There's a lot of people in the store, but you have your children. >> I understand. I could have. Yes, you're right. I >> I mean, at what point do you drop your your shopping things and come get your kids? >> I understand. I guess you're like the shopping cart. You could have gone grabbed that. So, taken them all in. >> This happens all the I mean, you're not the only one that has three children. >> I know. >> You have lots of people have three children. >> One is not acceptable. >> The call refusing to walk out the door. >> This is my first time. >> And you live where? In Glendel Heights. >> In Glendel Heights. How long have you lived there? >> My whole life. >> Your whole life. Whose license plates can you make? >> It looks like my mom's registered to the car, but I paid the car off. Well, the car's paid off because >> who's registered the car? My mom. >> Your mother. I'm live in the city then or she doesn't live with her. >> Who do you live with in Glenda Heights? >> My grandparents and then living. >> Does your mother or the grandparents have cars? >> No, my mom's at work right now. >> Okay. >> Oh, yeah. She works in Elgen. >> Okay. All right. I mean, I I I don't really see a justification for any kind of emergency situation here. Am I missing something? Is officer Gian Beckham missing something? >> Yeah, I mean, >> I'm serious. I I think maybe we're missing something. >> I'm not justifying anything. I mean, I'm just letting you guys know what I did is not justifying anything. I know I did wrong and you guys are here obviously because I did something wrong. >> Okay. >> So, I mean, the thing go ahead. >> You kind of understand where we're coming from, right? understand. >> At some point, did you say like, I wonder how my children are doing? Like my two kids, I try to hurry up as soon as I can. That's why I ran out of the store. >> 40 minutes. 4 total. >> There's a lot of people in the store. >> I understand. 40 minutes. But you only got two kids out here. >> What if they were gone? What if you came out here and they weren't here and they were just gone? Cuz you left that window. Like, I could have pulled your son right out the window and left with him. He doesn't know his last name. He doesn't know his phone number. He doesn't know who what your last name is. He's gone. I would hate for that to happen over there. >> I mean, there's going to be some sort of consequence for that. Like, that's just going to be something that's going to happen here. So, you kind of left me no choice. >> At this point, a broader issue than the timeline began to surface. How adults judge safety in familiar settings. This can easily happen when someone is tired, distracted, or assuming that everything will be fine. >> Keys are in the car. The doors are unlocked. >> Child I just I can tell you all of this is not Tyler has to turn around and grab another seat. >> This is a super bad decision. >> Yeah. I'm sorry I react the way I do. Like I said though, I have two kids that are these exact same age and I couldn't imagine leaving them for a minute in a car unsecured with my keys in it in the back of a parking lot. >> Wait, there's keys in this car? >> Car's running. Car's running. >> Okay, I'm going to have freaking >> Now you see why you're here. >> What? >> Now you see why you're here. >> Then I probably didn't need to give my ears check. >> I didn't hear it. Okay, I got it. >> No, no, no. That's >> okay. Can you copy vehicle? >> Mhm. That's why I'm going to be honest. You're going to be arrested. You're going to be arrested for childhood minutes ago. >> And that's the least of my of your worries right now. You should be concerned about your children, their safety, and moving forward how you're going to act as a mother. I hate to tell you what to do right now and tell you how to be a mom, but clearly you're not fit to be one in this moment as I would be mad at anyone with my children. Cuz I would I'm kind of looking at them the same way as I would with mine. So that's what's going to happen. If you got a phone, I want to call your mom, tell her to leave work. Hopefully she leaves cuz I'm guessing she would leave work. Basically what we're going to do is we're going to bring a police car up here. You're going to put all these car seats in there. We've got a car seat with a little one here. We're going to drive you all to the police station. >> Yeah, you all you all are coming to the police station. >> I'm guessing he probably needs a diaper change. [crying] >> I have clothes in the laundry mat. >> What? >> I have clothes in the laundry mat. >> What about him? >> I have all their clothes on the laundry mat. >> Where's the laundry at? >> It's over there. Um Bloomingdale, can you copy? >> Oh, we'll get them. You can get him after >> or call mom and tell her to go and tell her to grab 99939. >> I mean, are are any is there a father or is there a male in the picture at all? >> You have full custody of all these children? >> Yeah, this is the first time. >> Have you ever had police contact before? Have you ever been arrested for anything? [screaming] >> How old are you? >> Did we Did we do a secret already? >> I have not. No, I I I just found her in there real quick. >> Because of this lapse in judgment, she had to go through a formal legal review process. >> So, you understand the severity of this, right? >> It sucks, but you got to be smarter than that. We got to do something. There's too there's cameras. We had a couple people call on this. This guy's been sitting in this truck watching these kids. So, that's what's kind of going on. So, I'll cuff you in the front. You're >> underrest. >> The break we're giving you is not towing your car. Okay guys, so we could tow your car. Not going to do that to you. >> Can you guys at least roll the windows up? >> Yeah, we'll do that for you. >> The mother was charged with during [music] the life of a child. Under Illinois law, she could face up to one year in prison and a $2,500 fine. Pressure, fatigue, and urgent tasks can make decisions feel rushed. In those moments, pausing to think through possible risks can make all the difference in keeping a child safe. When parents and children no longer seem to understand each other, sometimes even a small issue can push a family towards serious legal difficulty. >> Stop talking to me. I really hope you die. Like, I hope you have a heart attack and stupid. >> On July 20th, 2025, Ohio officers received a report about behavior that went too far during a conflict between a mother and her daughter. The situation began when the teen brought a cat home and the mother gave it away while she was gone. When officers arrived, they first spoke with the 17-year-old girl. Initially, attention shifted toward her because she had been driving while her license was suspended. >> So, did you just leave your mom's house? >> All right. So, what happened? We were right around the corner when this call went. >> You got your license on you? >> My mom stole mine. >> That's okay. All right. Do me a favor. Unlock the car. My mom sold to my cat and I and I got mad and she just keeps trying to like kick me out. I'm only 17 years old. >> Okay, that's fine. Do me a favor. Place your hands on top of your head. Lean forward. Wait, would you keep your hands on top of your head? Lean forward. >> Her mom been kicking her off. >> A car with a lockout kit for district one, please. >> It was really nothing though. She just went in the house to ask her mom. Um, where's her cat at? In her mind, so she gave it away. So, >> okay. >> Um, nothing illegal in the car, anything like that? >> I don't know. Okay. >> She under arrest. >> Uh, well, she's driving suspended and that's an arrestable offense. Okay. What's going on between you and mom? >> Um, she has been trying to kick me out for no reason. When I was away, she gave my cat away and so I got mad. She was saying I'm acting erotic and then I was about to leave. >> You have work right now? Yeah. >> Where do you work? >> McDonald's. >> Who's this? >> That's a seat belt. >> Yeah. >> Nothing like physical or anything happened back at the house at Paris. >> No. Hell no. She um she went in to ask her mom where did she do her cat because her mom just keep doing petty like just keep >> So they just been arguing. >> Yeah. just argue for like her mind just keep starting with her family favorite her other sister she just went in there she didn't ask where we was at she came outside her mom following her following behind crazy stuff and she got in the car and she just pulled up just to >> Yeah. You guys having a good night besides this? >> Hell yeah. I was just in bed. >> Yeah, >> we we literally just got in the car and came here trying to uh grab her cat >> with the cat. Yeah. Look what they about to do. What y'all about to do with her? >> So she said she's under suspension. We're probably So whether or not someone can go with the vehicle cuz nobody can drive. You said you don't have a license, right? >> Okay. So you can't drive. So if that's the case, we can't get someone here to get the car with a valid license. >> Probably going to have tow it. >> Yeah. >> Uh I'm going to have services uh 17. Mom, >> see if mom can come here. >> Okay. and see >> car line of services. >> Tell tell them I'm trying to call mom and it's from a restricted number. >> Reference our call. Are you able to 17 the mom? Um >> just tell them we're trying to >> we're trying are we're trying to 17 the mom and can you have her come to Victory and Long Street? Uh we have a car with her daughter in it here. >> Hey 17, she's saying that she wants her to go to jail. I don't think she wants to go pick her up. What do you want to do with her? And I'm on the line with the mother. She does not want to come pick her daughter up. So what do you want me to tell her? Uh, just tell mom to meet us at Victory and Long so we can work this out cuz we have a car that was leaving the home pulled over right now. So, can I call her grandma to come? >> And that's what I'm telling you. She's saying she doesn't want to come pick her up right now. >> 10 week coffee. Uh, we're not asking her to pick her up. We're just asking her to meet us here >> because she wants to talk to us. >> She does not want Okay, you know what? Um, I I I'll have her I don't know what I can do cuz she says she's not going to come. >> Okay, tell them I've been trying to 17 her and it shows up restricted. So, tell her to answer the phone. 10. We've been trying to 17 her. It's coming back to unrestricted. So, we're just trying to get a hold of her right now. >> You can tell her to answer the phone. >> And tell him that after he calls her, tell her to answer the restricted. >> Yeah. >> Carten, uh, could you tell mom to answer the phone number from the from the restricted number, please? He said, >> "Okay, Tan, I'm sorry, man. She was being she's uh very upset understandably and she well she finally said that she's going to go ahead and come. She's just saying that the daughter pushed her and that she doesn't want the daughter to come back home but she says she is on her way over there now. >> Copy. Thank you very much. Sorry for the confusion. >> Okay. She was she's she's upset um you know not with us or not with you. She's really upset with the situation with the daughter so much. She say she is on our way. >> Copy. Thank you very much. The cops don't get an argument with your mama. Just come down here. >> Okay. You go back in. We're just waiting for mom or pop this out. Is that her? Uh, you can go back in the car, guys. Uh, do me a favor. >> Try to find a valid Do me a favor. Don't drive the car. >> I'm I'm not going to leave. >> You need to find a valid driver. Do you understand? >> I I can I can >> You Do you understand what I'm saying? Find a valid driver. Okay. wait until I leave and find a valid driver. Okay. >> The mother made several claims, but in situations like this, the most important factor is information that can be confirmed. The basis for deciding what is fair and accurate. >> Are you mom? >> Yes. >> Hi, Mom. >> And I'm sure >> what's what's going on? >> Uh, she came to my house. She was mad because I got rid of a cat that she brought to my house that I told her don't have at my house. And so she started knocking she started pushing me and then she started knocking stuff over all over my room and I recorded on my room. Look, you can come and see it. >> Okay. >> She was knocking [ __ ] everywhere. And then I called 911. Then she tried to run out the house. Then she went driving down the street all fast. And I told him when I called 911, I told her she didn't have no license or anything. >> Okay. >> Um well, we handled the issue with her with >> uh we handled the issue with her with her license. Um, >> uniting >> the I know this is going to sound probably frustrating for you with her destroying the inside of the house, but when it comes to kids and property and things like that, that's a civil matter. Uh, we can't when destruction of property going to say that's okay. >> What do you mean? >> She was pushing me. >> Uh, I mean, do you have evidence of her pushing you? Like a video? >> No, I tried to take a video. >> Yeah. I mean, we would have to have, you know, >> what is y'all going to do with her driving while license? You're just not going to do anything. >> So anyway, she I mean she has to I mean she gets a citation for it and then she has to >> about driveway. >> No. >> No. >> So what are you going to do? What are you >> She has to find a valid driver >> to come get the car cuz he doesn't have a license either. So we were cutting her a break >> by not towing the car cuz she's just going to go back and drive it tow it. >> I mean >> this is the second break y'all cutting her. How many breaks y'all going to cut her? >> Well, I mean as police officers we're allowed to use discretion. >> Well, you know what? What's the point of calling the police? You're you're doing absolutely nuts. So, what was the point of calming out here? >> Because we need to get your side of the story of what happened. We can't just go off of one party and then >> and you're not doing anything. >> It's not necessarily that we're not doing anything. >> So, we are So, here's the issue. Your mom, she's daughter, right? She's what, 17? >> Yeah. She'd be 18 next month. >> Okay. So, she's still technically a juvenile. So, because she came in the house and you know, whatever transpired over this cat, right? I mean, she you're claiming that she pushed you, but you don't we don't have proof of that. She It's your word against hers at this point. you don't have visible injuries or anything of that nature. So that's where we're at right now. >> Well, make sure we're not telling her she don't have no visible injuries either >> and you just wasted my time. >> Don't call me. >> At this point, [music] the main concern became where the girl would stay that night as her mother firmly did not want her to remain at home. No matter how tense the conflict was, the law still considered her a minor and that residence was her legal home. From there, the mother's position and the girl's rights began to collide. >> Uh, if I were you, I probably wouldn't go home tonight. >> Yeah, mom wasn't happy with you or else. So, it'd be best just uh we we explained her the situation, but I would probably just stay away for now. Okay. >> Wait, how how can her mom kick her out though? She a minor. >> Well, mom technically Well, so that that is that is true. Mom can't kick her out. She she is allowed to go and return home. She can't be she can't be kicked out of the house. What I can advise you though is, you know, when things escalate and fights happen, sometimes it's best, you know, if she can go to grandma's for the night, it's better so that things don't continue to add fuel to the fire, you know, if she can go to grandma's for the night. Sometimes it's just better to do that. You know, she's 17, almost 18 years old, almost an adult, it it's better to not add fuel to the fire, right? Uh that's sometimes just my my two sons in that, >> you know. Uh but no, she she doesn't she can't be put out of the house. She still has to She still has to be allowed to be let in the home. >> I want my key. You're not welcome back to my house. Don't come back to my house. >> Ma'am, you can't do that. >> I can't take my house key. >> No, you're not allowed to put a a minor out of her own home. You are not allowed to. She don't live there. This is This is This is This is why that teenagers do whatever they want to do because y'all don't do y'all don't do nothing. Somebody call for help. The law. I don't care what you say. >> You aren't allowed to do that, >> girl. >> I'm just telling you, you aren't allowed to do that. And I'm telling you, I don't give a what you say. >> Okay, fine. I'm just sending back to my house, y'all going to regret sending her there. >> That's a to a minor. >> Let her come back. If you want to let her come back, >> that's a to a minor. >> Um, you know, if you need to get your things, you always can call for uh >> Yeah, you can have a police officer stand by to get your things. Is there anything else I can do for you? >> No, I don't have neck. >> Yeah, my grandma. My grandma's she was asleep, but she's I'm getting up. She >> Okay. Are you good? >> Yeah, I'm fine. All right. Have a good night. Okay. Yeah. Get your license fixed. >> This mom is pretty hyped up. >> I came here and you know how many units >> on the grass without a license? >> What? Yeah, because she has a valid driver's driver on the way. >> I know she doesn't. >> She does not have a valid license. >> I know she don't. She came to my [ __ ] out the window. >> Hey, listen. It's a It's a civil matter between you two. >> We pull it up and all her clothes are just outside. We just had to pick it up and then she going to go in the car and throw everything back out the car. She just hit me with the car door. >> I didn't >> You guys ar You let her go. You let her come back. What you think I was? >> You just act like a dumb suburban white. >> No, I didn't. No, I didn't. >> Hi, Grandma. This is officer police department. >> She's allowed back in her house. She lives here. >> So he ain't supposed to be here. What you going to do? >> She arrested. >> She hit me arrested. >> Listen me arrested. >> What you going to do? >> Arrested. >> What you going to do? >> Arrested. >> Arrest. >> If you hit him, you're going to YOU'LL GO TO JAIL FIRST. IF YOU hit him, >> if you hit him in front of us, she'll go to jail first. >> I'm glad you didn't. >> Look at her. She mad. She mad as Okay. All right. Oh, >> still got her work [ __ ] on out here trying to fight with a 17y old like out of here. [laughter] >> Still a bummer. >> Why are you trying to argue with a 17y old? Bro, >> these rules with you. Like, go take your work clothes off. >> Get the camera out my face. She keep walking up. >> Here's your phone back. Can you do me a solid, man? Can you just go sit in the car? >> I appreciate it. >> Thank you. >> And she got my phone, too. I don't even I just watch. >> I'm about to call it. I'm about to call. >> This is my phone. >> She walking away. >> I told you. Go Blue, >> guys. Let's stop. This is This is escalating over nothing. >> Okay. >> All right. Listen, both of you need to get inside of your vehicle and get out of the street. Yes. And you need to get out of the street. >> I don't know where your phone's at. >> Ma'am, can you give her a copy? >> Get them off my property. >> They're not. They're on a public roadway. So, >> but she's also allowed on your property. >> She does. >> Thank you. Trail 12212. >> Ma'am, she said she's not leaving without her phone. So, you're going to have a problem with that? I don't know what to tell you about your cell phone. I don't think she's going to give it to you. >> I'm just not going to I'm not I'm not leaving without my phone. I'm about to go actually get my iPad so I can text my grandma. >> But I need my phone and I still have not quit my job. >> The officers remained on scene while the mother inside the home gradually became increasingly upset. The situation required them to take necessary steps to ensure the girl's safety. I >> mean, she lives here. I know >> this is her. >> I know she lives here. She's I told you. >> She's 17, >> ma'am. She lives here. >> Yes, she does. She's 17 years old. It's her daughter. It's your daughter. >> No, she ain't. I don't even know who she is. Prove that she lives here. >> 20. >> No, I didn't. >> Yes, she did. HE WATCH YOU STEP OUTSIDE. Step outside. >> I DIDN'T EVEN TOUCH HER. >> SHE'S AT 13. She's lying. Don't touch her. >> I didn't touch her. Hands >> behind your back. >> They behind my back and I didn't touch her. >> Okay. >> Are you okay? >> Yes. >> All right. Can you give me a water? My ribs. >> Your ribs? >> Please give me a water. >> I don't listen. I don't I don't know where water is or how how we can >> Can you tell my sister give me a water, please? >> Take a deep breath. Okay. I'm needing water cuz I can't breathe. >> Here, step down up. Step down over here. >> Can you stop touching me? >> Stop touching me. Walk. >> Can you let my arm go? >> No, you don't get to pick and choose who's walking with you. >> Well, I definitely don't want you. >> Well, I'm sorry. >> Quit walking so fast. You making >> But don't pull away from her. >> You don't even know what happened. You need a minute. >> She a head. 323 thanks to 19. >> I went in there. She kept trying to stop me from getting in there. I'm only 17 years old. They told me I below my house. And I go in the kitchen and then she said, "Stay here tonight and see what happened to you." And then she started me. So I was trying to push her off and I'm like, "James, tell the police to come in here." And then she just me across my face. She me dead across my face [ __ ] And then the that's in there grabbing me my ribs. >> And then the police came in there. Are you all she face like real loud in the face here? Like she's hurting in my face. I I'll come down the stairs in my face. >> All across my face. No. Right. Right here. In my face. You're not going to see anything. I'm too dark. >> Just stay still. Just look up for me, please. Just look up. >> Do you have anything on you that's going to poke or stick me? >> Do you have anything on you that's going to poke or stick me? >> Okay, that's fine. Do you have anything on you that's going to poke or stick me? >> No. >> Quit touching me. Feel like you're lesbian. Okay, that's fine. Stop moving. You got these cuffs on hard as hell. What do you think I'm going to do? Is this your daughter's cell phone or yours? Closer than you think it is. I'm just asking. Daughter said you had her. So, if you believe everything that she said on a touch and you're trying to take me to jail when she came in the house pushing me. That makes a lot of sense. going to go to jail tonight. >> Why am I going to jail? >> She just explained it to you. >> You're going to jail to domestic violence. What did I do? I didn't even touch her. >> What are you doing for my business? >> She's trying to search you to make sure >> my business like that don't even make sense that she would say mind my business. And she's touching all over me like >> she has to. We have a job to do. That's why we're here. >> Yeah. And I called you twice. >> I have explained it to you multiple times. I've asked you if you had anything on you that would poke or stick me. You refused to answer. >> What? I just got off work. What do you think have on you? >> I don't know what you could have on you. People hide things on them all the time. >> Can you quit grabbing my breath? >> I was grabbing underneath. I was grabbing underneath your bra. >> You're a pervert. >> Thank you. >> You're a pervert. >> Throughout the interaction, the mother repeatedly expressed that she wanted her daughter to face serious legal consequences. >> Officer, I did not her. I swear to God, I did not touch her. >> There's quite a few officers talking to multiple people to get all that figured out. I'm I'm just going to stand here and keep you company. That's okay. I swear to God, I tried to dis de deescalate the situation. I called the police multiple times and I told them that it was escalating that her boyfriend was call me all kind of and everything and she came in the kitchen. She forced her way through the door and I know the officer seen her try to come in the house and they said she can do it. Like originally she came here and she was mad because I got rid of her the cat that was not supposed to even be here. So she came in there throwing stuff out the window. She destroyed my whole room. It's clothes and stuff everywhere. I called I didn't touch her. I called the police. I called 911 or whatever. I said, "She's speeding down the street. She don't have no driver license or anything." So then they had her pulled over down the street. They told me to come get her. I'm like, "No, take her to jail or whatever." So the police kept calling me. So I went down there um to to see what they wanted or whatever. And then they said, "It's nothing. They was going to give her a pass or whatever for driving while license, give her a citation, have somebody come and get her car." They let her come back to this location. They should have known that she was going to start trouble. She pulled up here on the side street. >> Driving suspended. We don't necessarily take people to jail. >> No, but she was pushing me before she destroyed my room cuz she was mad because I got rid of a cat that I told her we couldn't have is what I'm saying. >> So, >> all I wanted them to do was leave my house. All of this over a cat that I told her couldn't even live here cuz it's not even on a list lease or any I mean because we're not even allowed to have animals. And I've been telling her for the last month to get this cat out of here. I was dropping it off that one a kind pet store. Like she can't force me to have a cat and I'm scared of cats. don't even like cats. Like, it's just ridiculous. What are you guys doing? >> What? >> I said, "What are you guys doing?" >> Uh, right now. >> Yeah. >> Uh, you're getting charged with domestic violence. >> How am I getting charged with domestic? I didn't even touch her. >> Well, three people or two other people also said you did. >> Who is the two people? Cuz her sister wasn't even downstairs when we was in the kitchen when she was hitting me with air fryers and grease and all that stuff she was throwing in the kitchen. >> Yeah. Well, that's not >> that's not what was said. I agree. >> She was not She was not even downstairs. She ran down the stairs. She said, "What happened? What happened?" She was down there throwing stuff. Stop talking to me. I don't even like you. Like for real. >> No, I'm asking you. >> I'm not answering none of your questions. I want my lawyer. How about that? Cute is a great person. You're such an [ __ ] Oh, she can have guests. That's not how it works. If somebody say they don't want if I say I don't want her him in my house, I don't want him in my house. >> You [ __ ] dummy. >> You should study law then. >> You should Why? I'm not a police officer, sir. I don't want to be one. You're not a police officer. >> Why do you keep talking to me? Why do you take me to jail? Take me to jail and leave me the alone. Good. Stop talking to me. Stop talking to me. Put my stuff in the evidence and stop talking to me, you dumb. >> Your property is going with your boyfriend outside of your home. So, >> no, it's not. >> When she did not receive the agreement she wanted, the mother began using harsh language, disrupting the officer's work. I want my property with me. >> Step on. >> Look at you. I can't wait to to rough somebody up. Huh? All these officers, please don't. You're touching me when you act the way you do. Well, when you're when you're under feel uncomfortable when you're touching me. Well, when you're under arrest, >> don't touch me. I trying to >> policy. We have to say I'm going to let your boyfriend say bye to you. >> No. By >> Oh, okay. So now stop talking to me. I really hope you like I hope you have a heart attack and stupid >> not know how to work. >> Uh let her do her job. How about that? >> How about Why are you touching me? >> Because you're my arrestee. So >> So why are you touching me? >> Cuz that's my job. >> Your job to somebody who's being arrested. >> Yes, it is. That's literally my job. >> All righty. I got to pat you down again. Okay. The mother was charged with domestic violence. Under Ohio law, she could face up to 6 months in prison and a $1,000 fine. Family conflict isn't just a private matter. It's a social issue that needs to be taken seriously because minors don't yet have the ability to fully protect themselves. [music] Protecting them also means giving them the chance to grow up in a safe, healthy, and respectful environment. >> I walked out and she was walking towards the gate. The gate was closed. In this story, the most [music] composed person in the family was a child. On March 24th, 2025, authorities received a call from a passer by about [music] a young girl walking alone near Highway 41, a hightraic area without an adult. Recognizing the potential danger, they responded to help. When they arrived, the top priority was to bring her to a safe place and determine where she came from and [music] who was responsible for her care. >> Where did you guys find her? >> Here in the yard. Was she through the gate? She threw our fence back there. >> Okay. Did you find her or your wife? >> Uh, we all kind of saw ours at the same time. Think we were all out here talking and these kids was all of a sudden walking out. >> Yeah. Come here. >> Come here. >> Unfortunately, we don't have anything else to take. >> What's your last name? >> Is it her? So, she came in back there. >> I walked out. We >> assume. We don't know for sure. She would just walked out. >> I walked out and she was walking towards the gate. The gate was closed. >> Did you see her walking? >> I saw Well, I saw was she walking that way and she closed the gate, right? >> Said the gate over here was open. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> All right. So, you guys think collectively at least that she walked in? >> The neighbor on the back side behind us said he saw her walk through the park. >> You're thirsty. >> Okay. >> Yeah. and Dominic just walked down that way to see if there was anybody looking for a child. That's why we walked back there figuring maybe that >> one of them houses >> somebody would be looking for a kid, you know. >> Yeah. >> And we didn't see anybody. And she I figured she might be able to recognize where she's at. >> We don't know if she's still living with her parents based on some prior cases. >> I'll be right back with you guys. Okay. >> During the verification, they met the child's older sister, a teenager living with the family in the [music] apartment complex. Though they are half sisters, she showed clear concern for the younger child, acting [music] as a steady source of support. Over there, >> where's the mom at? >> We don't know. >> Huh? We don't know. She tried to knock on her door. Can she see something? Hey, come here. Okay. It's okay. Who watches? >> I do care. I live with my grandma. >> Okay. Apartment complex. >> Mhm. >> This is not the first time this has happened. >> Okay. Who cares for right now. My mom. >> Your mom. Okay. What's your name, sweetie? >> Cassidy. >> Cassidy. >> It's mom, too. >> Where is mom's address? >> It's the same address. >> Where was she at? >> Where was she at? Hold on. >> Hold on before you call people. >> Hold on, >> Cassie. Okay. So, you're staying with grandma. Your mom lives in the same apartment complex and she's taking care of Okay. Is your dad still in the picture? Stepdad is at work. >> At work? >> Okay. What about dad? >> Um, we don't have the same. >> So, who's supposed to be watching her? >> I don't know. I've been at my grandma's. >> Huh? >> I've been at my grandma's mom. >> My mom and Chris should both be home. Both of the cars are there. >> All right. So, what we're going to do is we're all going to go over there. >> We're going to we're going to take a trip over there. Her diaper swirled and stuff. So, we're going to have to You're going to have to help out and change everything. Okay. All right. So, you're you're not supposed to be watching, correct? >> Mom or Chris? Probably. Okay. Well, how are you? Are you okay? >> How did you know that she was gone? >> Um, that cop I was outside. >> So, let's take her by hand and we'll all go over there. Okay. She'll walk with you better than anybody, right? We were standing here talking. She was standing over her head. >> Did she say anything? I mean, I walked over to her and like got down on her level and she just kept saying, "Mommy, >> we took her in the office and then one of the guys called and said that the gate was or the fence was down." So, we walked back there to see if we could find anybody at all. That's why I called you guys from back there when we didn't find anybody looking. We didn't just stop under the tree. So, we didn't go any further. >> And it says your wife. >> Yes. >> Okay. What's your first name? >> Stevie. And this ain't your fault. >> Okay. >> I know. I was going to have it so much worse. >> I know, but this ain't your fault, okay? You don't need to be worried about any of that stuff, okay? You're too young for this. So, let's go >> yourself. Okay. >> Okay. This ain't you. Thank you guys. I appreciate it. Based on the gathered information, officers went to the apartment to [music] conduct a welfare check. However, the mother's initial reaction did not seem to reflect the seriousness of the situation after her child was found outside alone. >> Little girl was found meandering down by >> Huh? >> Yes. Yeah. >> Wow. >> So, I found a girl out here, a 14-year-old. I believe it's your other granddaughter. >> Your granddaughter >> cuz I was looking for the parents and she said, "Yes, I have a sister that's autistic, brown hair, symmetric description." I brought her down here. That's her. She's been knocking on mom's door and mom won't answer. >> Phone number for her. >> I do. >> You try to call her? >> I sure can. The mom's not down there. >> No, it's your 14-year-old. >> My granddaughter's there with her. >> Well, not wasn't. Now she is. I drove I found her here, but the four-year-old was wandering the streets. >> I'm going to try and work with you here. I just need a second. >> What's your name, by the way? >> Mine? >> Yeah. >> How are you? >> Hey, can you come out for me? >> Sorry. >> For that long cuz we've been knocking for a long time. We're not that that long. >> Uh well, I was knocking here before I even made contact with your mom. Been about 5 10 minutes I was knocking. >> I was sleeping before that. I was sleeping before that with my kids. >> Okay. With your kids? >> Where do your kids sleep at? >> Usually sleeps in bed with me on the trip. That's more than they stay in here. >> Okay. Which one sleeps in bed with you? Okay. So, this is the only way in or out. >> What's that? >> The back door. >> Where's the back door at? So, where would your 14-year-old be right now? >> With my mom or with me? >> Okay. Where is your four-year-old right now? >> She's sleeping with you. >> Okay. Can we see where she would be sleeping at? >> She's fine. Can we see where she would she would have been sleeping at? What's your name, by the way? >> Jacqueline. >> Okay, Jacqueline. Last name. >> During the interior observation, they noted several [music] conditions not suitable for children, a cluttered living space, limited cleanliness, safety features such as door [music] locks and alarms not functioning, and an environment not appropriate for a child with special needs. >> We already have PCF involved. Um, and we've been doing so well with them. We're like, we were wrapping up. We're finishing. We were in our last month. >> Okay, here's here's my problem. It's not normal for you to still be sleeping at 12:45 in the afternoon. >> It is my kids stay up really late. >> That's not normal. You shouldn't have kids staying up really late. Kids that are 4 years old should be regimented. They go to bed at a certain time. They wake up at a certain time. They go to school at a certain time. They come home from school at a certain time. It's not healthy. Especially the little one in there now that's still sleeping at 12:45. I mean that's and then you're sleeping so hard that I'm I mean I'm literally banging on the door with a flashlight. >> The air conditioner is very loud over this. >> I I understand things are loud but if somebody's banging on my >> or anything I'm not I'm not anything like that. >> There's a serious serious issue when your artistic four-year-old is walking down 41. >> I know. >> All the daughters coming back in the depia. >> We are getting fresh. >> Okay. Who's all in here? Grandma's getting fresh clothes. There's another kid that's sleeping. >> Sevenyear-old boy, right? Seven. >> Is this apartment number four? >> Yeah. >> What apartment number is this? >> Four. >> Your mom? >> Yeah. Do you live here with her? Okay. >> Here with grandma. Does anyone else live with you? No. Okay. >> Mom, my stepdad, my brother, my sister. >> Okay. So, mom, stepdad, brother, his sister all live there. Another sister >> or her? >> My sister and my brother. I know you live over there. I got a lot of concerns. >> I >> Okay. The place is right. >> I understand. >> I I understand. >> What appears I'm not going to say it is appears to be noting. Okay. But there there's other stuff that looks like and but then there's there's that loose stuff like that. I mean there's cigarettes all over the floor in the bathroom. The bathroom itself, the toilet, I don't even know if it's usable or if they used it or they're just leaving. >> Yeah. I don't know. >> Okay. There's dishes [clears throat] all over the place. It's very unenic. There's no safety measures that are being used to protect. All right. Um the door latches aren't being used. The alarm thing that she said that was there obviously is not there. >> Right. >> Okay. Which is a concern. Okay. Especially if you have a child that has >> I a deficient to a point of where they're not able to give out their name and stuff like that. >> Right. Unspeakable. >> Correct. >> After the overall assessment, officers proceeded with [music] the necessary official steps regarding the mother. >> You had mentioned that this has happened before. >> How many times has this happened before? Go >> ahead and turn around. >> Turn around for me. Can I please have >> you will take it to the jail with you? Okay. >> Give it to me, sir. Please let me have it. >> So, here's the deal. Okay. Do you have anything on you that we need to go about? Cuz if you bring it into the jail facility, it will be a felony. Hold on one second. I need you to know that. Okay. So, if she misses it or you have anything on you, okay, since you're being under arrest, okay, it would be introduction into the jail facility. Okay. Is there anything that she needs to know about? >> Can your daughter see here real quick? >> Let me take care of this first. Okay. >> I'm going to search you thoroughly. I will find anything on you. It will be in your benefit to tell me where that is. You don't have anything on cuz I'm going to find it. >> I understand that but I don't have anything on. >> Okay. >> From that point on, the older sister's responsibilities seem to grow heavier. [music] At an age when she should be protected, she had to show maturity to carry adult burdens, something that gives anyone pause. bag. >> I want to keep whatever I'm planning on her that may be separate. >> Oh, this is maybe >> No, all that's just other stuff. >> Sit down for me. Kick the shoes off. >> Can you give her $100? >> Nothing on it. >> My mom can give my mom money. >> Yeah, she wants her mom to have the money. >> Okay. >> All right. Watch your feet. Okay. >> Can you please ask if I can help? >> You want your mom to have all the money? >> No, I'm not giving you. >> No, just one of them. >> What happened? >> I just wanted >> All right. We need to run our investigation. Sit back for me and I'll come talk to you when I'm ready to talk to you. >> All the money? >> Yeah. All the money to go to her. >> So, we'll do a handle the care thing with you and stuff like that. Yes. Your mom is going to jail. All right. Um, >> did you guys already take her? >> Yep. So, and there's a lot of concerning things that I have, especially with other things that are in the house and in the bathroom as well. >> I heard. >> I know. I figured you're pretty bright. Look at me. I know you're bright, okay? I know that you care for your brothers and sisters and you love me very much and you're very upset, okay? I want you to hold up your head high, okay? I need you to be the strong one for the little ones. All right? >> Sorry. >> And things happen every now and then, okay? You have a grandmother that loves you very much. And this doesn't mean that mom doesn't love you either. Okay. Sometimes choices happen because people have addictions or whatever else. >> Hers. >> Okay. >> What's going to happen to Chris? >> So, well, Chris is not there. >> So, nothing's going to happen. >> Not right this second. I'll be upfront with you. So, they run a CH on her real quick. She has all the locking mechanisms in her house, all the latches, all the alarms, all the bells and whistles. The house seems uh not in disarray or anything like that. I know that they stayed with her before. So, as long as that she's good with it, as long as this criminal history comes back, good, then we'll call DCF and make sure everything else is in motion. And I told her that mom's already gone and gone. >> Okay. So, she knows. And I uh we'll do a handle with care thing so the school is aware of. And I told her that she could reach out to the school counselors too as well >> since her mom went. Do you have anything else or we got all the kids' names? >> Yep. >> All right. >> Both the mother and stepfather were charged with failing [music] to adequately care for a child. Under Florida law, they could face penalties of up to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Support does not always come from family. Sometimes it begins with [music] a neighbor, a passerby, or what seems like an ordinary phone call. And those small actions can make a [music] meaningful difference. In modern society, the line between family discipline, cultural differences, and legal responsibility can be so thin that a decision made in just minutes may lead to serious consequences. >> In China, is that is that a form of discipline? Put them outside. You got to do that. >> No more. >> On October 8th, [music] 2023, Orlando authorities responded to a neighborhood call about a 6-year-old girl standing outside her home and crying for an extended time without any [music] adult present. The caller said they knocked but received no response. At the scene, the father explained this was his way of teaching the child a lesson. >> But I keep knocking on the door and nobody comes to the door. That's what she said. Right. >> Right. >> You live. Come here. Why you want she leaving? >> Because the family is coming out of there. They've been here for several months. >> Hey, how you doing? All right. You okay? >> You okay? Where is it? >> Have you seen her before? >> Yes. >> She was crying. >> You talking? >> No, >> they don't speak. >> Hey, >> your daughter. >> I know it's a a punishment. >> It's what? sight. >> She's a child, dude. >> Yeah, I know. >> Yeah, but you can't do that. You You can't do that. You got ID? >> Yeah. >> Okay, I need your ID. You can't do that. She's too young. She's unattended. This is an unattended uh child. Where's your ID, dude? Bro, we might we might have a real real child issue right here. Bro, this dude left the 5-year-old daughter outside as a punishment. Unattended. And he's telling me that's a punishment. >> Sorry, man. My ID. >> I'm going to write it up, though. Like, yeah, unattended, bro. Like, literally outside. And he told me that's a punishment. He said it's a punishment. Why would you punish her like this? What did she do? >> Hate Hate her mother. She hates >> She hit her mother. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. But how old is she? 6. >> She's 6 years old, dude. >> Six? >> Yo, but you cannot leave her outside unattended. >> I know. I know he outside and I I watch him. >> Yeah. >> Bro, I was just going to write up, bro. Be honest with you. >> Yeah. And I w and I I watch her. I know he outside. >> Yeah. But the thing is when other people see her outside like this, if some something were to happen to her, you're responsible for her. >> I know. I I watch her and I watch her and then mother say to that that >> it's like she's six. I get what you're saying. She's totally wrong as a child. But it's like 6 years old. It's a no no. Like if you want to like give up your rights as a parent with her, that's different. But it's like in in the state United, it's like people are going to call. Multiple people call cuz they were concerned about the child. >> Okay. I know. >> Sorry. Sorry about that. >> Okay, that's fine. It's just like, you know, if some if she were to go missing, we'll have this whole thing on lockdown for the rest of the night. So, yeah, if you can go get your ID, we just >> Okay. >> Okay. Thank you. You got your ID? >> Yeah. Yeah. I >> Yeah. >> So, what what did she do to the mom? What did she do to the mom? >> Hate to the mall. >> Like her? >> Yeah. >> What she How she >> What? >> How did she hurt her? >> How did she >> You said she her like did she physically hurt her? >> Yeah. It's a you you know. >> Yeah, I know. I'm saying though, but did she her did she at all? Did she cause any? >> No, I'm saying. Did she like Does the mom do we need to call like >> No, no, no, no. Where's the mom? Let me see the mom. Let me talk to the mom. >> Okay. >> I need both of you guys' ID. >> Yeah, I need the mom's ID, too. >> The father offered several explanations. However, language barriers limited his ability to fully express himself. Emotional pressure made it harder for him to communicate and cultural differences increased the risk of misunderstanding. >> Excuse me. >> How long has she been outside for you? >> Um, since before I got back at least 30 minutes when I saw her. I don't know how much longer. >> 30 minutes. >> Yeah. >> What's your name? Have you seen them do this before? >> I'm sorry. >> Have they done this before? >> I I've never I've seen the kids out playing me before together. I've heard two, but there I think there's but um never like this. When I came back, she was >> And you didn't see anybody on the back porch, right? >> No one on the back porch. >> You knocked on the door? >> I knocked on both the door and the back porch several times. When I found her, she was crying and banging on the door. >> Yeah. I just need your ID cuz I'm You're just going to be in court. Thank you. Not bad. You're just going to help us out. Thank you. So, so what what made her what what made how what happened? So, >> I don't know. It's his mom said is hit mom punishment outside. Okay. >> Stand here. >> So, did she her mom? >> Yeah. >> Okay. In the face. Where did she put her at? >> What? >> Where did she like where where on the body? Where did she >> uh you know is it's a kid is >> just like this. She didn't want to go. Mom was trying to pick her up or something. >> Yeah. Yeah. He hit him and and and I want stand here. >> Okay. She ID and so she she didn't find his uh his driver license. >> See if you can find this. >> But mom's okay, right? She's okay. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. She's okay. It's like No, it's a key. >> Yeah. >> But but we don't allow she do it. >> Gotcha. >> All righty. Is she usually bad? >> No. >> Okay. She she don't she she just started. She just did it just today. >> Yeah, just today. >> It just we got to take a report because she was unattended, you know. >> Oh, I know. I know. I know. Sorry. >> Does she talk English or or she? >> No, it's not good. It's uh grow up in China. >> Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. How long you guys been here? >> What? >> You drive trucks? >> Yeah. >> Okay. No, I see the CD. They eat my mom and I I watch you stand here and uh think about his uh >> What are they talking about? You guys got different last names? >> Yeah, she's my wife in China is a news. >> So in China y'all do y'all do different last names? >> Yeah. Yeah. >> My mom's not the way you say she it's like how a child is. >> So >> yeah, it's not like >> how why do we put her on top? >> Cuz he said [ __ ] to mom. So this this a form of discipline? >> What? >> This is a form of disciplining where you're from. Is it when you put her outside? Is that a form of discipline? When she was outside, right? Is it a form of discipline where you're from? >> Punishment. >> I just want to stand here and think about his fault. >> Okay. >> What What language do you speak? >> Chinese. >> Uh Mandarin. >> Mandarin. >> Yeah. >> In your country. Where you from? Your country? >> China. >> China. >> Yeah. >> In China. Is that is that a form of discipline? Put them outside. You got to do that in China. >> There's a normal I need to hear. >> Oh, and he hates his sister. >> She and her sister. Okay. >> Yeah. So, I want to put here. >> So, in China, you guys y'all just put them outside for like just let them think about their decisions >> at some time. >> Okay. Gotcha. We're just trying to figure out what's going on because like I said, the neighbors were concerned. >> Okay. >> You guys just moved in. >> What? >> You guys just moved here? >> Uh, I moved here. is uh 2 years. 2 years. >> Faced with a complex situation, officers had to manage multiple factors at once. From communication and safety assessment to making appropriate decisions to protect everyone's [music] rights, especially the child's. >> She doesn't have to be comfortable. She's six. She's not she's not supposed to know right off. It's on the parents. It's >> No, that's what I'm telling you. >> You saying she >> No, I'm saying like she It's not going to be a battery for the child. >> No, it's not a battery. It's child. >> Uhhuh. >> Yeah. for this. >> Yeah. So, yeah, the dad So, the dad will be 100% 10:15 for that cuz I know I put her out here by the front door and he was like because she so her she can think about what she did. All right, sounds good. All right. >> Yeah, bro. 10:15, but I'm going to make sure it >> would like to write a statement. >> Oh, what? What type of statements? I I don't know what >> about what happened because it's a we just got to get get what happened. Well, you're you're you're do you want to write a statement about what happened or No, >> you don't have to. >> Sorry, my English is not good. Maybe I can uh write. >> You want to write? >> I I know. I know. I know. I know. But I can't write stuff. Say my English is not good. >> Okay. Gotcha. >> Yeah. If if you use some uh some question, I can call my neighbor neighbor neighbor and uh explain something. Are they are they Chinese? >> No, no, no, no, no. It's uh but but uh but but she uh familiar with my family, you know. >> What do you mean? >> It's uh it's a she is uh good friend. >> Okay. Okay. >> So, okay. Give me a second. Give me a second. How long was it? How long was she outside for? >> I saw maybe 10 minutes. It's a short time. I don't know why is there some number called the place >> 10 minutes. >> Yeah, 10 minutes. It's a 10 minutes of 20. It's most 20 most. So maybe it's 10 10 minutes. >> Okay. >> But she want maybe it's 38. >> Did you hear her crying? >> No, you you say he cry. You say she crying. >> She was crying. >> She She's crying. >> No, she was >> she was I didn't noticed. But uh you you say she's good and she always hate his uh she's she's big sister. >> Bro, we don't got a no golfing over here, bro. We need somebody that's that's educate the C, not challenge. >> All right. >> All right. Yeah. If you want to stay. Yes. Oh, I know. >> Yeah, I know that. >> How would we even translate it? >> But does he want to or no? >> Yes. Yes or no? >> I'm listening, sir. >> He said no. >> I said no. I can't. >> Oh, he can't. >> Okay. All right. All right. Um, >> yeah, it just came right in. >> Read this. Now, what's your um what was your ID number again? I'm sorry. >> That's it. >> That was it. Just about the statement. >> Yep. That's it. I know everything else. >> All right, sir. Thank you. >> Oh, yeah. >> Have a good night, brother. >> Grab your statement, man. Cuz I don't want to have nobody to come back. >> They always around here. >> I know. I get that. The difference from playing and a child is unattended and crying that it concerns that it alerts concern from a neighbor is another issue. The neighbor say she left came back the child was still crying outside. >> Okay. But she but I think they always playing outside go to other people home. But the thing is you say she's she's football and and and toiling on the toy is always outside. >> She wasn't playing. >> She's playing she playing always outside. So I think it's safe. >> Yeah, I hear what you're saying. >> You see what I'm saying? >> You got a point. He does have a point. >> Um, what is he saying now? >> Outside and nobody's watching her. That's what I'm saying. It's a difference from >> this. Oh my gosh. She said, she's a baby to us. >> Yeah, I know what you're saying, but the thing is she was crying so long that a neighbor came downstairs to check on her. After the initial assessment, officers placed the father in temporary custody as part of the verification process. The moment carried strong emotions as he appeared [music] confused and did not understand why his method of discipline had led to this situation. >> And nobody was outside. >> She's crying alongside when >> you probably you probably sleep. So the neighbor that called she saw she left came back. The child was still >> I don't tell me cuz I came and I knocked the door. I bam on door. Nobody answered. So I did I personally knocked on myself on my body camera. I bam on the door. >> Huh? >> Next door. >> Next door. I knocked on the window and I knocked on the door. Nobody answered. >> Correct. Then I went to the bedroom window where I seen two twin beds which I'm assuming are daughter's bed. >> My daughter. >> She will knock that hard. You know the difference from this lock. You know what I'm saying? So um >> they are a good father. Oh, >> this is today. Maybe this is something weird. >> Sorry, but we got to take you to jail today. We got to take you to jail. >> Put your hands in. Put your hands face in. Face face towards you. >> Why? >> Uh we're going to charge him with child, which is a thirdderee felony. >> Child. >> Yes. Because the because as a as a caretaker and guardian with her not being supervised and unsupervised for such a substantial amount of time, it becomes to not only guarant her safety, he's responsible for her safety. >> Police. >> No, I get what you're saying. But the thing is I knocked on the door myself. We know that the person that called wasn't lying because I bammed on the door four times. Even saying Orlando police. Then I went to the window where the kids beds are the two twin beds. Nobody has >> Where are you going? >> He's going to Orange County. I I'll explain to you. Do you explain to the wife and she can come get them? >> He's saying it's necessary. >> Huh? >> It's necessary. I need the lip to this. >> What's that? >> Not comfortable. >> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You got to put your Yeah. I mean, they're not They're not going to be comfortable, but they're super loose. You see? >> See? Yeah. They're not comfortable, but they're loose. They're not. >> All right. So, I got to search you. Just stand right here for me. Do you have anything in your pocket that'll hold me or stick me? Anything in your pocket? Pocket. Pocket. >> This is my first time. Yeah, I know. It's unfortunate. I'll give your wife all the information. I'm sorry about that, buddy. >> H. So, I'm going to explain to your wife where you're going to be at. I'll give her all your information and I'll take her phone number and put it in your property bag. Okay. >> I'm on rest. >> Yes, sir. So you just got to you can either you either back in all the way or you can sit out. You want the back end so you can be comfortable. I know it's kind of uncomfortable for you. All right. Thank you, buddy. >> You need your um >> you who have the uh you have the uh what did you order? >> The Cuba zone. >> Okay. I got you. I got you. >> You pay for it? >> I paid for it. You just How much? What do you >> You got I'm want I'm on body cam. I'm going to give your wife her keys. Your keys. Okay. >> All right. Yeah. >> All right. What followed was a shock for the entire family and the children who witnessed the disruption. This is a standard procedure when there are signs that a child's safety may not be fully insured. >> So, I'm going to tell you Oh, you got Okay, I got it. I'm going to tell you. >> Here's the keys for his car. He says he have his cell phone. >> Yes, he has both his cell phones. He said he got both. >> So, he's going to be at Orange County Jail. It's going to be Orange County Jail. You know where Orange County Jail is? It's on um 33rd Street. You know, you got an iPhone? >> Yes, I I have Roy there now. I know the GPS. >> Okay. So, is he's going to be at Orange County Jail? Um, do you have a phone number he can call so you can pump him up? >> I'll give you his You got You got their phone numbers? >> Where you going? >> Oh, where's my husband? >> He's going to jail. You know, he's going to jail. >> Can I talk to him right now? >> They put it. >> Yeah, he's going to jail. >> He going to the jail. >> Here's the address. He's going to jail for child. I I'm >> okay. He's going to give you all the information >> for child >> with her being unsupervised at 6 years old. That's a no no in the state of Florida. Especially when a neighbor comes down and knocks on your door, no answer. That's why she called the police. You cannot do that. Then I knocked on the door >> and they do that. >> They touching the door. >> They knocked on the window indoor and I also did the same thing that >> so it's like, you know, it becomes a safety issue because nobody's responding to the door. We got a six-year-old outside unattended. You know what I mean? That's the issue we have. So, just explain to her what I just emotions. Give me all my stuff. >> Uh, one of them got he got information. You got you got all the kids information right now. You got You got a kid? >> No. >> Oh, I thought you was right. What you right now? >> The address and phone number. Oh, >> again. Huh? No, you're going to jail. >> I need to go to jail. >> Yeah. >> Why? >> Because child. I just told you that. You're going to jail. Your wife Your wife will pick you up. >> Oh, man. My wife. >> She You're going to jail. >> How long? >> I don't know. You got to see a judge. guarantee. >> Huh? >> Yeah, they're serious. >> What? >> Huh? >> It's just outside. >> She can't be outside like that, dude. I told you that. >> Sorry. I thought I I don't know. >> Yeah, I know. But outside every day. >> The father was charged with thirdderee child. Under Florida law, if convicted, [music] he could face up to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine. However, according to court records, less than 20 days later, the case went to court. All charges were dismissed and the file was closed. This shows that the legal system has mechanisms to carefully review circumstances, risk levels, and [music] a guardian's intent. Not only the initial situation, but also allowing room for a more balanced and humane evaluation. This incident involved a teenager rather than young children who was involved in a serious dispute with her older sister. >> How long has she lived here? >> We've been living together since our mom passed away. >> Still with me one and this is not the first time I had to take my sister out. >> On September 4th, 2024, police received a call reporting a conflict between two sisters. According to the report, the older [music] sister physically confronted her 17-year-old sibling. Police arrived promptly, gathered statements, and assessed the situation of everyone involved. >> Everybody okay? What happened? >> Okay. It was a spot on the thing, and I had gotten them out, and I cleaned it up. And I was She was I was like, why you been busy didn't clean it up? She seen it this morning. I said, why you didn't clean it up? And she was like, because I didn't make it. And she was like, I'm not my mate. I said, you should have cleaned up. Then she got her baby diapers and she was like this. And then I was like, she was like, oo. And I said, if you just going to hit you back. So she hit me with the diapers. And we started playing. Her baby was right there. And then after that, she just started filming stuff and I went outside and I go, "No, >> you need medical attention. You got a couple scars and stuff." >> Oh, no. >> The older sister later [music] returned home and explained the cause of the incident. >> You want to tell me what happened? >> I It's just been building up. So, I keep telling my sister, "Okay, so this morning I seen it was like a brown spot on my floor." I had let it go. So, this morning's now when I got home, she was walking around. I was like, "Jay, there's a brown spot where you sit at." And I said, "I'm not cleaning up cuz I'm always cleaning up the liquor after her." She's older than everybody in the house. I have two kids. So I said I'm not going to keep cleaning up after y'all. I need my kids clean up. This been transpired. I've been asking her for a link to move the air mattress. They just been building up and my little sister going to listen to me. So I was like, oh her with the box of diapers and she was like, "Oh, if you so you dare me not you." So I box diapers. >> How did he? >> Yeah. >> Was he involved or was he just present? He was present. Like he was just nothing happened to him. >> Hello. You guys okay? You guys okay? >> Yeah. >> All right. I'm going to have my partner get their information. You said they weren't involved. They were just present in the home. >> He was in the bed and he was standing in the living room when we started trusting. >> Y'all can take care of my chair. I don't want >> How long has she lived here? >> We've been living together cuz our mom passed away. >> She came with me on and off. This is not the first time I had to take my sister out. Definitely. >> How long has she been here this last time? She came back the end of July. >> So, unfortunately, we can't take her with us. At that point, she has gained residency for the home. So, you will have to evict her. >> Okay, that's fine. I will. >> Can you do me a favor? Can you get the kids' names and then watch her? She's not free to live. >> Police took photographs of the scene [music] and collected evidence. This incident highlights that not only children, but also teenagers deserve their [music] rights and protection. >> What's your guys' relation? Sister, cousin. >> You're aware on the phone. She's spontaneously in front of me and actually threw a box of diapers back. >> I'm going to need to get pictures of you. So, calms down real quick. >> No, don't sit on that. That's nasty. >> All right, I got to get some photos. So, we'll start with your hands down by your side. And this occurred in the living room. Is the door still unlocked? Where's the spot she's talking about? >> Right. And then this the spot she hit you with. >> Then once she hit you with the box, then what happened? >> I got her. >> Anything else happened? >> Um, she hit my head in the table, but it's like I fell. So, >> so you were falling. You fell into that? >> No, it was over there. It started I was sitting right here trying >> Where did it hit you specifically? in my leg. >> Did you see which hand she used when she did that? Right hand, left hand, >> right hand. >> Okay. >> She had these bags in her left. >> Okay. >> So, she was right there and then that's when I just her because and then she had um dropped everything and then she started and that's when I fell. >> And when you fell, you hit the table area. All right. I'm going to have you stand back outside. I'm going to get photos of all this. Everything you've told me up to this point is the truth. The whole truth. Nothing but the truth. And how old are you? >> 17. >> You guys live alone or is there other people that live with you? her baby. >> The older sister's partner arrived in time to [music] witness her facing legal accountability. Initially, however, he did not fully cooperate with authorities. >> I'm taking photos. >> I got a search for >> I'm not looking for anything and I was invited into the home in reference to a domestic. I'm assuming you're the boyfriend. >> Yeah, my kids. >> So, we were one called here in reference to a domestic violence situation to where they've kind of given us the rundown and then two, we're making sure the kids are okay, but they look perfectly fine. Go put some clothes on. >> So, I'm just documenting everything that occurred. Do you have a driver's license or an ID with you, sir? >> Oh, yeah. I need my ID for the report. >> I wasn't on the report. I don't need one. >> Can you come over here, please? >> Yeah. >> Can you put your stuff on my hood? Put your hands on your back. At this time, you were detained. Okay. >> Don't argue with her. Don't argue with her. Just block her out my house. Block her out my house. >> She's a resident. We >> I don't care. I don't give a Take a seat. lock. >> But again, even if he locks her door and she requests in, he would have to her phone. I don't know if she wants this to go with her or not. >> You think she want her phone? >> Yeah, she going to take her to jail. What's What's her charges? >> She's 17 years old. So that's child abuse. felony and the fact that it's domestic there's no bond she gets >> what's your Wednesday so she would be required to go to first appearance she would be out probably tomorrow afternoon if not Friday morning he asked how long so it is currently Wednesday so no bond means that she would be required to speak to a judge which >> so she don't got no bond >> it's domestic >> so it would force her to speak to a judge the earliest she would speak to him is tomorrow morning Thursday you'd be able to be released tomorrow if Not Friday. You want to complete a sworn statement? >> What's that? >> So, it would be an official document, a piece of paper wearing you to everything that you sold me up to this point. I also have some other paperwork I got to provide. Just walk over to my car and I'll get it all straight away for you. I'm going to get the paperwork and then I'm going to have you stand on that side of the car cuz they're getting pretty upset. I need his info to show who I turned the kids over to. >> Sage, do you have anything that's going to hurt me and poke me? Can you step out for one second? But turn around for me. Right over here. Just turn around. All right. Have a seat there. And what do you want? Slides or something? Do you have slides or >> Yeah, in my house. >> Do you have the air on you? Do you want more air? >> I'm okay. >> Are you good? >> Yeah. >> Can she get some slides? Do you have slides for her? >> Before leaving, police explained to the younger sister her rights and protections. This highlights the importance of addressing disagreements through the proper authorities and following legal procedures. In >> the state of Florida, anybody who's a victim of a crime can have their information redacted or blacked out if anybody was to do a request in the report. Won't have your name, date of birth, social security, and your phone number. Any information like that. And this will go in my records. >> No, you're a victim of a crime, not the other way around. >> Okay. >> If you do want to have your information blacked out, you would initial here. And then again, everything you tell me is the truth. The whole truth and nothing but the truth will help you guide with the understanding if you provide false information and you could potentially be charged with curly. This is going to be for you. Okay? This is information on how to obtain an injunction. All right. What that is is like a no contact order. You would go to the court, you would petition them, you would fill out a packet, it would get presented to a judge. If there's enough information to where no contact or contact the judge and make a determination and put it in place. Yeah, she told me too. >> Was it spontaneous or was it or was it >> I asked what happened and she was like I got mad. She me to do it, so I did. Things are going to be pretty volatile in there. You are a resident of the home. You've been here long enough to where you technically have residency and ties to it. >> But my clothes I know this. What about >> this is why I'm going into this section of the conversation. If any of your stuff is damaged or anything of that nature, you can do one of two things. One is you can civily sue that wife. Okay? It's a civil lawsuit. You go through the courts and sue them for any damages or replacement value that you have to fix or pay or whatever. Okay? Two, you can get your own stuff and leave on your own accord, but because you're a juvenile, I don't know how that would work. >> Are you feeling safe here? >> Better. >> Yeah. Do we need to make them aware that >> Yeah, we probably are. If anything happens once we leave cuz we're not going to be here, unfortunately, all day, all night. Well, you're a juvenile. That's where that's where it's going to come into issues cuz technically under the eyes of the law, you can't make decisions on your own. Has to be approved by a guardian. So, with that being said, if anything happens, you have a phone that works, keep that close by, keep it charged. God forbid you need us for any reason, please call. Don't waste time on non-emergency if it's for something genuinely important. >> Police also explained [music] the same principles to the partner, stressing that handling matters personally is not a legal solution. >> Hey, Mr. Couple additional things, man. As of right now, she is still a resident. You can't kick her out. >> I'm not saying you weren't going to. I'm just explaining to you. Can't kick her out. You can't lock her out. You can't destroy any of her stuff. She's a juvenile, so I don't know how the residency I don't know if you can evict a juvenile. That might be something to ask the courts about to live. I'm not sure who this is in this car that's going to take her today, but >> you can't do anything with her stuff. It's got to stay a me. >> Well, we're just letting you know because it's f it's sister versus sister. However, your involvement is she's a juvenile. >> Got nothing to do with me. That's their business. What her sister say, >> this is how it involves you. If you live here, she has every right to live here as well. Okay. >> None of my business. >> I'm just explaining to you if I don't tell you. and [ __ ] Whatever her sister said, that's what her sister said. >> As long as >> they got going on. I got nothing to do. >> You can come in, hun, if you're ready to come in. >> Somebody need to come. Got grandma need to come get her. >> And who lives here? Is it the young lady in the car? >> And then who else? >> And the kids. >> Hey, sir. Do you live here? >> No. No. Okay. >> Okay. So, the gentleman with the boyfriend. >> Yeah. Boy. >> Boyfriend up there. Okay. Yeah. She's 17. They can't They can't get her out that way. >> Not at all. about to get grandma to take her >> and she I mean forcefully you can't >> is there responsibility of a of a sister to to do that >> her sister like obviously a parent >> even with her she might be have power of attorney over her we don't even know we might want to ask her or you know >> ensuring a safe guardian for the younger sister was the top priority when the family cannot provide support the social system must step in to protect her >> but we got to call DCS anyway she's a juvenile >> do you have a guardian besides her like a grandma or aunt or uncle or anyone? >> Yeah, I have my grandma. >> Do you think they would be able to help you in these troubling times? I think it would be in your best interest. >> But you can't and then basically cuz you're a juvenile. It's hard. If you're an adult and you go and haunt you, does she have power of attorney over you? Like, does she have legal documentation? Who does? >> Grandma. >> Hi, this is Officer Bernal with Holly Hill Police Department. Who am I speaking with? >> You don't feel safe. >> Hi, Miss. So, it looks like Jade has got herself in a bit of a pickle. She was involved in an incident to where her sister ultimately her. So, now her sister's going to go in jail. So, Jane needs some Yeah, I'll roll it down. Uh, she needs some assistance and potentially a place to go. Would you be able to >> do you know of anybody that would be able to help her? Cuz grandma's saying she's unable to help. >> I have no she has no idea who could potentially help anyway. We got to call BTC and let them know that you are 17 years of age. Call the hotline. She is 17 and we want to keep her somewhere safe. >> Before we got her some sandals that she wanted her phone. Is that still accurate? All right. You're low on battery. I'm turning off so that way you can have something when you make it there. >> You'll be able to get calls. You'll be able to get numbers on your phone. >> This is going in the back in the bag for you. Hey D, this might be a big ask. Can you call DCF for me and have them come out in reference to the juvenile? See if they will come out for housing. see if they can help her with that cuz they're wanting her out. Grandma and other family are not able to help. So, if we let her stay here, it's just going to become more volatile. She said she doesn't feel safe. >> Here, I've got him on here if you want. >> Oh, she's going. I'm going to go 1019. >> Does she want to meet us at the station instead of here? Does her friend want to follow us to the station and we can figure it out? Her friend's by the car. The car here to the left until we can figure it out. >> The subsequent legal procedures were also completed [music] promptly. To make this process a little easier for everybody involved, did you want to go to our police department and wait with us? What's the easiest for you? >> How long is it going to be here if I just wait here? >> I don't have a genuine answer. But at least at the police department, you would be in a safe environment. It's AC, free bathrooms. >> What's your plan with your friend, if you don't mind me asking, are you able to >> stay with her? Can she stay with you or not? Or worst case scenario. So why don't we do this just so we can at least get her out of the situation that we still have to notify DCF. If they say that there's somewhere safe for her, then we'll go with based on that, but at least we can get them out of here and then figure out what's going to be the best course. >> I can't sit down. >> She has work. So do you want me So she can just drop me off at the station? >> Yeah, that's fine. Worst case scenario, just follow us. >> Okay. >> Thank you. You don't need anything here. Do you have an ID, wallet, or anything that you want to grab before you go? >> No, I have my purse. >> All right. So the friend's going to follow us to the station. She does have to go to work so >> she's going to get a ride with this lady who's going to drive her to the office. >> Oh yeah. Get her to like our office. >> She's just getting a ride from this lady. So we're all going to care of it. >> It's a friend of us going to drop her off there. We can't leave her to 17 with that hostile and then nobody wants to come in there. So we got to call DCF. >> Hang out in the car. >> Yeah, that's fine. I just would rather get an answer from DCF, find someone safe that can take her. I don't know what's going to happen. And due to them being present, not involved, the Department of Children and Families will be notified. So, they will be following up on that aspect, but seeing how everything was focused on YouTube having issues and not your kids. They might talk to you about obviously parenting, parenting plans, stuff like that to where the kids don't become privy to situations. >> The 22-year-old older sister faced charges of toward a child and abuse without great bodily harm. Under Florida law, if convicted, [music] she could face up to 10 years in prison or probation along with a $10,000 fine. Teenagers need protection [music] and a safe environment to grow. This incident underscores the importance of guidance, protection, and legal support for teenagers in complex situations. In New Mexico, a mother is facing the possibility of losing custody due to life's challenges and pressures. >> Give me the baby. Don't make this crazy. On July 3rd, 2024, police received a report concerning the welfare of a child at home. They arrived promptly to assess the situation. Inside the house, officers observed that the home needed additional care and organization, which the mother explained were due to a recent move. >> Sheriff's office. >> Hi, how are you? >> Good. How are you? Hello. >> Are you Erica? >> Yes. >> Hi, Erica. I'm Deputy Lozano with the sheriff's office. And the reason we're here is we got a call from a social worker that had some issues or not issues but allegations maybe that you're you haven't been here for several days at a time. I don't know what you know if that sounds [laughter] baby. >> Hi. But basically we're here to make sure kind of do a welfare check on your on your son here and make sure >> the AC is not working. It's kind of Yeah, it's just kind of just make sure that there's food stuff like that. Is okay if we come in? >> How come the AC is not working? What happened? >> They just haven't painted to fix it yet. I brought >> like turn it on yet or anything like that. >> How long have you been living here? >> Just barely. You just >> Oh, about how long you think? >> Um, not even a month yet. >> Okay. So, just a few weeks? >> Yeah, I think about >> Okay. Or do you have dogs? >> Yeah, just in the garage. >> Oh, okay. >> Yeah, sure. >> I barely did move in, so it's not that much, but like I barely do. I just brought pizza and just brought some McNuggets and a happy meal and stuff like that. So, it's not like, you know, I just That's really it. My mom got like I really had nothing when I moved in here. >> Okay. How are their rooms set up? Are they set up? Okay. They're big. They don't have nothing yet. >> Okay. You have a plan on getting them some or >> Yeah, I had stuff but I was staying over there kind of like in um the zone like war zone and I had someone I didn't want to bring that stuff over here cuz it was kind of like just the apartment was kind of like >> you just want to get some new new stuff. >> Yeah. So I did end up. >> Do you get help from like a social worker? >> I have a case worker. Yeah. So my phone is not working right now. But it's not I don't have service. So maybe like she's concerned cuz she can't get a hold of me or something like that. >> Okay. Is that your phone? >> No. >> Oh, whose phone is that? >> That's my son, my older son's phone. He came looking for earlier and I don't know. Maybe I don't know. He came looking for his phone and like he was like freaking out about like my little boy having like a phone and he wanted to take it. So he took it from my son. He felt bad and gave it back. So maybe he's like doing the type that called or something like that. I don't know. Like I really don't know. So he was here earlier. So I cuz I just got home from getting pizza in McDonald's. >> Who was here earlier? >> My older son. I didn't know this, but I guess apparently he tried breaking in like he messed up the window and stuff like that. The other >> Yeah, he does like he he does um he smokes fentanyl and stuff like that. So like it's like I don't know he was here. I don't know what he left here, but he has here or anything like that. I don't condone anything like that. So he kind of acts I rate like that sometimes over phones and overdose stuff like that. And I like I said I barely just got here. I haven't even had a chance to even like >> Was he watching the kids while you were? >> No, he just know my daughter was helping me. Okay. >> So like but he went he came and took her bike. He was like running through all the stuff like he he randomly like does stuff like that. and he like he'll leave stuff here and there like >> but he doesn't live here. >> No, like I'm I can't have him around like that because he does stuff like that. I said he he had just left like just right before you guys got here. >> So what I'm going to do is I'm going to write a report basically that we came over here. We looked at everything. I mean the house is clean. It's empty. >> So no it's empty. It's very empty cuz I've been having one thing after another after another. I'm just trying to get my kids like like I'm trying to do him because like every like he kind of comes and like Yeah. My oldest son. He like kind of stir stuff up and then like me and my daughter at each other's throat over there. >> Yeah. That's his name. >> The home also showed areas that needed improvement to support the children's living conditions and overall development. >> Oh, is that in the backyard or in the back of the house? >> Oh, is Alex here? >> He was just here. >> He's here now. >> Not all my friend. >> Oh, okay. That's not Alex. >> No, Alex came to some stuff. >> So, does Anthony live here with you or how? >> No, I just like >> Oh, is that his car? Yeah. >> Is your plumbing working? >> Yes. Okay. So, like a couple days ago, we walked in and then the whole bathroom like spread out like that. So, I go into the backyard and um it was like squirting the water out and the owner shows up and we're like, you know, like clean water out like that. So, I have to turn the water off. I'm not too sure like why it did that or what had happened. I just asked me to come and get service it today like the air condition stuff cuz they're supposed to convert it and I we didn't have all the money together. >> Who's the landlord? >> Her name is Mary Lee. >> Mary, do you have her phone number? >> Um I had my phone >> cuz one of the sinks is fully backed up. Has cigarette butts in. toilet has turned each other probably. He's like very >> that one's been there a while. >> No, I don't know. >> I don't know that. I don't know. I >> She says it's just her friend or something. It's the guy. >> He's her boyfriend. There's a bubbler in like a bubbler in the bathroom. But I just did a clip. There's like nothing in the bedrooms. >> Yeah. >> I don't know where the kids sleep. There's only one air mattress. Looks like that's where she's like completely clean. >> Furthermore, financial pressures and adult related difficulties seem to heavily impact the children's emotional environment. >> What's your plan on getting them beds and stuff? >> Like I have she's kind of help I don't know when they get it like that. So I don't want to really like bring stuff like that into my home is like that's why cuz I like I would got stuff like that cuz it's definitely like you know it's like used. So I that's why I haven't gotten they've offered it before but I just I just haven't gotten that stuff yet. So I was like ah I mean we have a couch right now you know like I know it's not like you know no ideal or anything like that but I know it like yeah no that's like planned to have this um my mom has the air mattress I was supposed to get from her but she's moving there and back and forth that hasn't done much. I'm pretty sure like, you know, I'll get it hopefully within like the next, you know, week or so, too. You know, I really want to just cuz it's AC. That's the main thing cuz like the whole function will be so hot. It's not an issue. >> Cloudy at least now. >> Really, really, really hot. That's really it. Like, >> so this guy here, what's his name that's here? Yeah. >> Anthony. >> Anthony? What? >> I don't know his last name. >> You don't know his last name? How do you now know his last name? But he's hanging out here. >> I know. I know. >> Just be honest with me. >> No, I don't know his name. I mean, if he stays here sometimes, I mean, it is what it is. You know what I mean? >> No, he doesn't. He has his >> What? >> Has his own place. >> And that's his car. So, no idea what his last name is. >> Ramirez, I think. >> Ramirez. >> So, I guess I feel like >> uh probably if you invite him over to your house, I would think, right? >> I'm not trying to be a jerk. I'm not I'm just >> We got my grandma's and then she passed away. So, kind of just like left us like how it was and then I just kind of like returned to it like trying to plan out all the resources that I could. So, we stayed at the shelter. From there, I got my apartment and then there got the house. >> Did you have to move out of your grandma's house or your mom? >> Yeah, because my mom and them didn't do like they helped fight and stuff like that. So, they weren't there. >> I got you. Well, at least you got this house. >> Yes. No, I worked hard, you know. I really did. I worked really hard at trying to get this house like that. And I'm going to continue working hard, you know, to to make it better. Um, we're in a way better area. Go to schools and daycare. A lot more safe over here than >> Yeah. Are you able to work like you? >> Yes. work. I just been I just spend most of my time with him because like he was being tested for borderline autism that they were trying to do. But I I did have a car but then it broke down so that kind of became like an issue. Oh yeah. Sorry. That takes most of my time. So it's like kind of odd that like like you got a pause saying that I live in here because I spend most of my time with my kids and stuff like I'm always with him so he >> Yeah. I mean he Yeah, I'm sure he requires a lot of attention and care. with her dad during >> since we're doing the whole move thing and stuff that she stayed a little bit longer with me than she norally does cuz she was right there somewhere. So that's what she's going to be doing I think the next time after she's going to go >> with her dad for your dad live at >> invis. >> Oh okay. In this context, the police had to involve the child welfare and protection authorities. >> Mom left this morning to go get them food and drinks. Okay. >> And that's called she hasn't been gone for days on end. >> Like a few hours, >> an hour >> says it's this morning. She doesn't really remember. >> They moved in like 2 3 days ago. Their stuff at the apartment. >> Okay. >> She's comfortable staying here. They have like I guess two mattresses with the sleep on the couch. >> Nothing in the mattress. >> I think what we talked about before sending sending it to somebody else. I think they're fine. >> Oh yeah. >> Here now, but >> good. >> Yeah, it's raining. I'm going to write a report. I'm going to send it to CFD. Not necessarily a negative thing. They absolutely have resources, too. >> They left the scene but returned the following month for the parents to face legal accountability. >> [music] >> Sheriff's office. >> SHERIFF'S OFFICE. >> Sheriff's office. Come to the door. Do you want to get on taser for that dog or what do you what is your opinion on that? I think you're getting a call. >> No, that's not me. >> It's my house. >> Okay. >> SHERIFF'S OFFICE. >> IT'S NOT MOVING, DUDE. ENTER THE DOOR. >> Sheriff's office. Come out. Is your dog out? >> Okay. Come out. >> Crazy. >> You're crazy. You're not listening. >> Grimes. We're making a five. >> Give me the baby. Don't make this crazy. I don't know what to do. >> We need to talk to you. Relax. Relax, please. Relax, please. >> I'm not doing anything. I'm not doing anything. >> Show me your hands. Show me your hands. Come over here. No, [laughter] no, no, no, no, no. >> Move her back. Move her. Control her. Stop. Stop. Turn away from me. Turn away from me. With your right hand, pull up the back of your shirt. By the collar. By the collar. Okay. More so I can see the waist. Expose your belt line all the way. All right. Stop. Come to me. Do you have any other weapons on you in your pockets? >> I I don't. >> Okay. Pull your You can put your arm down. You have anything in your pockets? >> Do you have an ID on you? Yeah. >> Where is it at? What? It's in your wallet. Where's your wallet? >> Right here. >> Okay, that's fine. We're going to come this way. Want to detain everybody? All right, cool, man. We're just going to detain you for now until we figure this out. Is there anybody else inside? Are there any other people inside? >> Okay. >> The children's physical condition and health were also given special attention. Even indirect lapses in care can have long-term consequences on a child's development. >> No, you got to stay in here. You got to stay in here for a little bit. >> You're okay. >> You're okay. You'll see her here in a little bit. Okay. >> No, >> I don't want you to burn your feet. Stay inside. His teeth are all >> running. >> Yeah, he's got a what looks like an infected cold sore. And then obviously he's super dirty. How old is he? >> What's up? >> My nose is up. My burning too. >> Sure. Where are you going to sit? >> Some [ __ ] over there. >> No, I just need to stress my nose. >> Okay. Where are the dogs at in the house? Are they like in a room or behind a gate or something? >> They're what? >> Okay. Is it in a crate? >> Yeah. >> Why are you taking the kid? Uh, >> I'll let the case agent explain to you, but um, when we have a welfare check, you don't just get to like ignore us for 2 hours. Okay. You have to open the door immediately. And she made contact with the deputy over the phone and denied entry. And so, she's actually probably also going to be getting some charges as well. >> You going to take her in? >> Most likely, but that's up to the case agent. >> Is that ID on you, dude? Is it in your pocket? Which one? >> I'm going to put that cash right here back in your pocket to hold on to that one. Martino, these vents are blowing down. You got to give it a little bit of time to cool off, but it will. Okay. >> Like, can you please see him or can I help out with anything? Like, because I'm worried like there's nobody inside the house. Like, I don't >> So, here's what's going to happen. There's already paramedics in route to check your son just because something like this and the condition that he's in, we're not going to get super into that. But because of all that, he's got to be checked out by paramedics. Okay? So, they're going to hang out with him. As far as like you and me and everything or as far as like the rest of us, what we're going to be doing, we're going to be going into the house and we're going to be checking to make sure that there's nobody else there. And then we're probably going to secure it at that point. And then at that point, my partner, the female that's over there, she's the one that's kind of in charge of this investigation, she's the one that you were talking to on the phone earlier. She's going to explain to you what's going on today. All that makes sense. >> Is there any are they like at least at least the door open? Like at least >> there's not enough There's not enough of us out here to do that. Okay. >> Like I'm not like I feel like I like I I know I didn't answer the door and everything like that, but like I feel like I'm like >> So we're not going to get into it because I have to read your rights if I'm going to question you. However, I am going to tell you that by you being on the phone acknowledging that we were here and not answering, that can constitute another charge of interfering with the child welfare investigation. Like I said, we're not going to talk about that right now. I'm just letting you know that's why you're in handcuffs in the back of a car. That's why he's in handcuffs. >> That's the only reason. I can't have this door open or I can't have you sitting down or standing outside cuz we don't have enough people out here right now. >> Cool. As time goes on, we'll get more answers for you. We'll get things moving for you. We got water that we're trying to get him. He's not taking anything. I know, but the paramedics are in route. They're going to take careful. >> The mother shared that her son experiences some challenges with self-care. Encouraging consistent medical visits and a balanced diet can play a key role in supporting his overall well-being. >> Sheriff's office, anybody inside, make yourself known. Troom [snorts] clear. >> Did we check the fridge? >> Yeah. Firefighters going to talk to you to get a little more information about your son. Okay. What's your name? >> Erica. >> Miss Erica. Uh, my name is Greg. I'm with the fire department. Right now, I don't see any physical on your son. Does he have dental care? >> So, he's really hard to like get. >> So, is autism a specific diagnosis or freak out like sounds like really I know if I just went like for one second calm down like I don't know >> here's here's the thing these guys have a little bit of training on how to deal with people like that just like with the special consideration considerations that they need to take the hospital does as well he's not going to be alone for one second I understand We're completely unrecognizable people to him. However, even with me interacting with me a little bit, he's starting to get a little comfortable with me. Okay, one of us is always going to be with him. I'll tell you right now, it's just not an option. He has to go to the hospital right now. That's not anybody's >> I don't I don't >> but you going with him. >> You being with him, there's there's a few more steps along the way. >> So, what other than like right now, you don't see nothing wrong with this? >> No physically freaking out. But again, I don't know his situation and a doctor is much better trained for his medical needs if if he needs anything than than I can ever be. So, thank you for letting us speak. >> So, there was no allegations about him being physically. However, that child was also extremely malnourished and provided statements to deputies like super bad teeth. >> Yeah. >> So, for us, it's more so of like a procedural thing, too. Like we obviously like that stuff's not going to get fixed today, but like >> the man involved identified as the mother's boyfriend also provided additional information about the family situation. >> You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand those rights? >> Yeah. >> The reason why we're here is uh we're doing a child welfare investigation, right? >> You're being detained because it got it rose to the level detained meaning you're in the back of a cop car right now, right? Like I'm not saying you're going to jail. We already know that you have a warrant out of California. It's nonextcredible. We can't do anything about that. Cool. >> Yeah, I went to jail for that. >> It's still active. So, you want me to call California? >> No, I know. I know that. I know. >> All right. That is what it is, right? You're being detained because we had to make entry or we had to essentially force entry, right? As far as like prior to us making contact with you, what was your understanding of why we're here? >> Honestly, I don't know. Like, >> run me through it like kind of start to finish from us like showing up, right? >> I guess when she was she got she was on the phone with I don't know. I guess the lady was out there >> you know like I I don't know what was said and then she just said that she like she's scared to go outside. >> Did she say why she was scared to go outside? >> I don't know. >> Has she like did she mention any reason of like why we would be out here? >> At what point did you realize that we were outside? >> When I heard the door knocking, okay, well apparently you guys knocking on the door and then she went out to open the door. >> You were in the very back room. Is that that big bedroom that was there? >> Where was she at? She is not wanting to cooperate. >> She was in the room with you. Where was baby at the cuff in the background? I mean, as it looks right now, it doesn't seem like you're in any trouble. Where talking to you to get some information? Because it can kind of go like one of two ways. Who's the father? >> Okay. So, who is she to you? >> Uh, my girlfriend. >> Okay. He revealed that the mother had previously faced child welfare interventions and shared current challenges leading to lapses in childare. It appears that risks from the past tend to recur. >> How long have you guys been together? probably like 9 months now. >> So throughout that time, where do you stay? >> Where do I stay? >> Yeah. >> I had my own apartment and then uh pretty much I moved like kind of moved in here. >> Which address is that? So how often do you stay here? >> No, I I like kind of moved in. >> Oh, you did? >> Yeah. >> Oh, okay. When was the last time you were like staying in? So I guess the best way to explain it, when was the last time you were like sleeping and going to sleep at night in your apartment? >> In my apartment? >> Yeah. 1st of August. Well, like pretty much I had that apartment until the 1st of uh August >> of this year. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So like 20 days? >> Yeah. >> Who primarily takes care of him? >> Uh she does. >> Does he go to any type of daycare, day school, anything like that? No preschool, nothing. >> I think he's too young. I'm not too sure. >> Well, he's three, right? So it's kind of on the border sometimes. >> I don't have kids myself. So I don't >> Me neither. It's only because of the job, the specific job I do that I know anything about kids. Does she ever leave him alone with you? Like do you ever end up watching him? >> No. >> So like she's wherever she goes, he goes. >> She always has. >> What does she do for work? >> No, she don't work. >> No. >> No. She on unemployment or to get any type of government assistance? >> I think so. >> What about you? What do you do for >> I just got fired. >> Damn, dude. [laughter] >> And youring birthday month, too? >> Yeah. >> When you were working, would you help support her financially or was it kind of just like she took care of her and the baby and you took care of you type deal or like >> uh kind of like that? Like if she sometimes she needs diapers, yeah, get them diapers. >> There was no like obligation like you're going to pay for this whatever. >> It is fairly concerning, right? Like looking at his condition. Well, uh, I I didn't even want to talk about it because that's her business, you know, but all he eats is nuggets. You know, you eat probably one nugget and that's drink milk. >> I'm sorry. How many did you say? >> I said drink milk pretty much and I eat nuggets. They only want to eat 10 f. >> And is that just because she hasn't tried to give him anything else? >> No, she cuz I I asked her the same thing. >> So, what happens like throw it all over the floor? What kind of other food are we talking about? Like >> the other day we had fajitas, um, lasagna. >> Are you aware that she has other kids? >> Yeah, the daughter went with the father and then son. >> You know why? >> Uh, no. >> You just not care. I mean, it's okay if you don't care. They're not your kids, right? Like I That's fine. Like you don't have any parental obligation to these children. That's why I'm saying you're not like we're not investigating here. >> No, it's um I don't know. She like I don't try to get in for business. So those kids and whether you've heard it or not, they were removed from her care because of by CYFD. Well, we removed them and then CFD decided to place them with the father because of the way she was taking care of the daughter. >> Yeah. The other children that were in the residence. Now with that little bit of knowledge, because we're conducting a child welfare investigation, put two and two together, dude. We don't seem dumb. Like you understand why we're here and the type of investigation we're doing, right? Possible child abuse, things like that. Um, >> and and I know when I say child, a lot of people automatically think that means people out of their kids, right? That could mean anything. It could mean like educational, healthare, anything like that, right? So now with that in mind, like I get it. You have some type of obligation towards her, right? Because you're in a relationship with her. You live in her house. I understand that it may not be in your nature to necessarily talk, but we're not talking about like a charge. We're not talking about like a shoplifting charge. We're not talking about some bull charge. We're talking about quite possibly like what I see as one of the worst crimes somebody could perpetrate in a trap, right? Has there ever been any concerns and this isn't necessarily a criminal thing because I understand times are hard. Like money is not what it used to be. It's like as much money as you might have doesn't go as far as it once did. Has there ever been any time where you guys weren't able to afford food? >> No. >> Okay. All right. So, chicken nuggets, milk, as far as you know, he hasn't been to the doctor. Has he ever gotten any type of mental help? >> Not enough. >> And the doctor one time. I'm sorry. I got that wrong. >> Yeah. And then uh I don't know. It's uh what is chicken nug? >> After consideration and discussion, the police decided to release the man while informing him of the next legal procedures. >> So, a little bit more background information. Apparently, he only eats milk or drinks milk and eats chicken nuggets. Like the whole time this dude's been with mom, that's all he's ever seen. Oh, and candy. So, like I said, you're not going to jail tonight. You're not in any type of trouble. What >> about her? That's still to be determined. She might have some misdemeanor charges on her tonight and then felony charges later on. That's going to be up to everything. The kind of thing about this, and I understand that it's not ideal, and it's going to kind of suck, is that uh house is being secured right now for a search warrant cuz we got to go in there and take some pictures, but we can't get consent from anybody here to take pictures. So, we got to get a warrant. So, it's going to take some time cuz we got to write that up, get it approved by a judge, and then we can go and take the pictures. Up until we're done taking those pictures, nobody can go inside or out of that house. So, I'm going to take you out of cuffs, and you're you're free to go, but we can't let you go back in the house. Should we go in for misdemeanor charges today? But the felony charges might be later. >> Possible I could talk to her real quick. >> No, not right now. Just cuz we she's kind of been like really amped about everything that's going on mostly because of her son and all that, which is completely understandable, but she's kind of calmed down at this point. So, we kind of want to keep her there. But if anything, do you have a cell phone on you? >> I know it's inside. >> So, I would just say about 9:00 we should be done. If by then we're not done, like we're definitely going to be like getting ready to be done. >> Okay. Um, son, I believe has the house keys. So, I don't know if >> her son has the house keys, >> I think. some place. >> Oh, the 17-year-old. >> Uh, no, don't 21. >> Okay. >> We'll make sure that it's locked up as best we can. If you're not sure, >> I was going to say if you can leave the house that door open or one of the other >> Yeah, sure. >> The mother has been charged with thirdderee child abuse. Under New Mexico law, she could face up to 3 years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Parental care must combine love with responsible attention to a child's safety. When a child's safety cannot be insured, legal measures and child welfare interventions are a natural consequence of the situation. This situation shows how a parents actions can quickly lead to serious legal consequences. Let's take a look at what happened. >> Keep your head tilted back for me. Right hand. >> On March 16th, 2024, police received a report of a potentially impaired driver. When arrived, they observed a vehicle that had been parked for an extended period with a driver appearing unresponsive and a child present in the car. >> I took the keys out. >> Oh, I already took the keys out. There's a kid in the passenger seat. She breathing. >> Yeah. >> Let's wake up. You're saying Madison? Madison is the first name. >> That's what the RO is. If that's her, >> Madison. Madison. >> Hey. >> Hey. >> What? >> Are you Madison? >> Yes. >> Can you look at me? >> No. Get the brass behind me. >> What? >> The brass. Look at like the lake. The lake. The lake. >> The light. Okay, I got you. Okay. So, I pointed it away. Yes. Okay, there you go. Hi. >> Hi. >> Good morning. How are you? >> I'm good. >> Where do you live? >> I live um >> Is that okay? Where were you going this late at night? I was going home. I just stopped cuz I needed to take a breather. >> Yeah, for sure. >> I was upset and like >> Where did you come from? Or did you just leave the house to go take a drive? >> I dropped somebody off somewhere. I was going home. >> You dropped somebody off? >> Yeah. And then I saw >> Okay. Do you have any ID on you? >> Yeah. >> You don't have any weapons in the car? Knives or guns or anything like that? >> Thank you. >> I'm not like I want to drive. >> You want what? >> I know how this looks. Oh my god. >> That's okay. Well, I already saw it. You don't have to hide it. >> I'm not hiding. I just like Oh my god. Like it looks so dumb. But that's not what I was doing. >> What were you doing? >> I was doing it home. But my car was messing up, so I shut it off. >> Oh, the car was messing up. >> Yeah. >> How was it messing up? >> It was kind of transition. >> You shut it off? >> Yeah, I shut it off and I was just >> No, I took the keys out. >> I'm still I guess I was >> I didn't want you to get spooked and drive away. >> I guess. >> Yeah. I didn't want to take any chance, especially with the kid in the car. >> Did I say her fall asleep? >> What's that? >> Did I fall asleep? >> Oh, yeah. You were out. You're That's deep into dreamland. >> Upon waking, the mother gave vague and contradictory answers and made an attempt to hide a container in the vehicle. >> Were you coming from a house around here? Do you know somebody over here? Do you know where you're at? This is 27th Avenue and First Street. >> Yeah, literally I was leaving. >> Leaving from pick driver off. >> Who is that? >> Who did you drop? >> Charlie. >> Charlie. He was at your house earlier and then he brought you brought him home. No, I went to go pick him up and like I got him off at half but my car was messing up so I stopped here. I was getting ready to pull down that way and that's probably when I I guess fell asleep. That's actually what happened. >> Well, you put the car in park so that's good. At least that you did that. Yeah. What were we doing with the bottle? That was just what? Yeah, >> it's just >> you just carry that around with >> I just carry around. But when I go to meet with my friend >> What's that? >> If I'm going to get arrested, can we just do that? >> Yeah, but there's a process. So we can't just like >> we don't just haul people to jail. >> Fast lane it. Yeah. >> In this situation, the police had to ensure the child's safety while controlling and removing the mother from the vehicle. >> I pulled up to the light there heading east and I see this car sitting here. I'm like just kind of waiting. I'm like, is it going to pull out? Like what's it going to do? And I'm like, well, it's been some time. Now I have to go investigate. >> Now I got to go take a look. >> Yeah. Now I got to go take a look. So as I pass by, I see her. It just slumped over. Right. So then I come back around here, try to get in front of her just in case. Tries to take off. She had a bottle of fireball in between her legs. Seeing all that, the car was on. It was a cart. I didn't want her to get spooked and take off, especially with a kid. So, I reached in, took the keys out, they're both knocked out, but the keys are on top of the the hood and had to shake her to get her to wake up, drool, and everything. When she noticed the fireball, she tried to put it away. I already saw it. >> Yeah. >> Well, yeah. I might need you to come pick I just got >> pick up a ride. >> I was stopped and >> call a ride for >> stopped. I don't know what's going to happen. But >> how much have you had to drink tonight, Madison? >> A couple beers. >> Couple beers. >> Why don't you do me a favor and step out for me? Okay. >> Yeah, they're they're doing their thing right now. I got to go. >> All right. Bye. I love you. >> Officers observed clear indicators of impairment, including unsteady movements, slowed reactions, and difficulty completing standard [music] assessments. The situation posed serious safety concerns for the child. >> Said you had a couple of beers and some fireball. Where did Where were you drinking that at? >> I was at home. I checked her to a friend's house. >> Come right up here. Going to step right up here to the white line up here in front of this Tahoe. Okay. So, a couple beers. How many How many is a couple? >> Two. >> Two. Different people have different numbers. So, all right. Step right over here for me. See where my lights on on the ground here? >> Stand on there for me. Turn and face me. I'm going to ask you to perform a few standardized field exercise. You willing to do that for me? Yeah. >> First thing I need you to see the uh red light here. I'm moving from side to side a few times. I want you to follow with your eyes only keeping your head still. >> My eyes are very dry. So, >> okay, I understand. >> And I'm going to go in a couple of small circles and come towards your nose. I'm not going to touch you. Okay? If your eyes feel like they're going to cross, just let them do it naturally, okay? Okay. >> Follow the light. Okay. All right. Do you have any problems with your knees, ankles, or back that affect your balance at all? Okay. What I'm going to have you do is I want you to turn and face that way. I want you to put your left foot on the white line. I want you to put your right foot in front of it just like this. Keep your hands down by your sides. Okay? I don't want you to stand just like that until I ask you to move. Do you understand? When I ask you to, and only when I ask you to, you're going to walk nine steps forward, keeping your hands down by your sides, and count your steps out loud for me. Okay? Once you take your ninth step, you're going to use a series of small steps to turn around, which I'm going to also demonstrate. Once you turn around, you're going to walk nine steps back. It's going to look and sound as follows. 1 2 3 all the way out to nine. Once you take your ninth step, you're going to use a series of small steps to turn around like this. Nine steps back. 1 2 3 all the way out to nine. Do you understand? >> Again, you're going to keep your hands down by your side. You count your steps out loud for me. Once I tell you to begin the exercise, I want you to complete the entire exercise without stopping. Do you understand? >> All right. >> Go ahead and begin for me. >> Right now. >> Go ahead and begin right now. 1 2 3 4 5 8 9 Turn around. Do it again. >> Yep. >> 1 2 3 4 5 7 8 >> Okay, come back over here. Again, I want you to turn and face me. Keep your hands down by your sides. Okay, this exercise is called the one leg stand. >> My balance is really bad. I'm going to fail this as Dude, I'm not even kidding. The tip of your finger to the tip of your nose like this. Okay? Not to the side of your nose. Not to the top of your nose. Tip of the finger, the tip of the nose. Okay? Luckily, nobody got tonight. So, with these kind of cases, as you may or may not know, DCF's going to get notified. So, I don't know when Madison's going to get out of jail, but since we are notifying DCF, I just like to tell people in advance so you don't freak out. Chances of them showing up at your door are pretty high, okay? Just so you're not caught off guard. It's not obviously >> I have kids, too. Me and my ex split custody 50/50. We ended up going to court and everything like I don't want that to affect my life. >> I I understand. I'll be straight with you. Do you have any questions for me? >> It's not a serious question. >> No. Any any questions? Okay. >> I was going to say, can I do you mind if I take the breath? I'm not trying to get somewhere to pick us, you know, to be a hero and then end up >> No, no, no. I would much rather people tell cuz obviously I'm on the phone with you, so I don't know what's going on. But now that I've talked to you in person, no offense, I can definitely like it's Friday night. I'm >> No, absolutely. All All good. If you don't have any questions for me, I appreciate it. Have a good night. >> The mother is facing charges of driving under the influence, DUI, and child. Under Florida law, if convicted, she could face up to 5 years and 9 months in prison and a $7,000 fine. Driving under the influence with a child in the vehicle not only is considered a serious safety violation, but can also trigger strict intervention from child protection authorities. These stories may end here, [music] but the message remains. Children cannot choose their living environment, nor can they always speak up when placed in unsafe or challenging situations. that responsibility belongs to adults and when it is overlooked, legal safeguards become the clearest final reminder.
