On August 23rd, officers were called to a small Amish community after a tragic incident that shocked the entire town. A woman in an apparent mental health crisis was accused of her four-year-old son while her husband died trying to save him. Police arrive after neighbors detain her at the scene. >> She gave him to God. >> Yes. >> What do you mean by that? >> I clean in the lake and I gave him to God. And people are going to tell me I'm crazy, but he is real. And he loves you. He really does love you. He loves you. And I doubted him. I doubted him so many times. But I am to tell you, he is coming soon. He is coming very soon. Prepare your hearts. The end is close. And I'm for sure supposed to tell you that he does love you. >> Ma'am, who did you Can you explain to me what happened? Who did you throw in the water? >> I I gave my son to God. Your son? >> Yes. >> Where's your husband? >> He went for a walk this morning. >> And you haven't seen him? >> He didn't never come back. And we went to the boat and his clothes were there. And God told me he in the lake and the fish swallowed. And you're actually supposed to go look for him in the bottom of the lake. And you will find the fish and you will find my husband and then you will believe. But ye of you little faith that did not do before sea, send people down to the bottom of the lake looking for a fish. >> How old is your son? That's in the lake. >> Four. He's sweet. I love I >> Okay. 7 9:40 central. We're out with the mother. She is advising that she threw her four-year-old son in the lake to give him to God. >> I need to know where your husband's at. >> He's at the bottom of the lake in a fish. He's in a fish. There's no fish large enough on an to swallow your husband. >> He's at the bottom of the lake. >> Okay. >> I thought I thought your husband went to for a walk. >> Yeah. And then we came to the boat and his clothes were laying on the boat. >> Tan pants and cream shirt and flip-flops. >> Do you have a cell phone? >> Uh, it's in the camper. >> It's in the camper. Um the mother is advising that her boat is located if you just want to log at the causeway center dock and that's where she threw the child in the water. She's also now saying that the husband's in the water if you just want to log that and notify the dive team. The rangers are heading over that way right now. >> So your knee won't hurt you. Yeah. >> And you jumped in the lake and then you got back out and then you guys came back to the camper. >> No. Then they came and then we went and we prayed for a little while. >> And where was this at? >> And then we waited for dad and then they did not come. >> Did you guys walk down there? >> And you were still there by yourself? Uh just for a little bit. >> Waiting for them to come back. >> Yeah. And then they came back. >> Then when you say they came back, it was your mom and your >> We went on the boat and we prayed a little bit. >> That was this morning. >> Yeah. And then we went to the edge of the dock to wait for dad and mention, but they did not come. >> Okay. What? You went on the boat this morning? >> We didn't take it out. We just went on it and prayed. >> All right. So, you prayed on the boat. You jumped in. You jumped in. Or did your mom throw you in? >> No, my mom did not throw you. >> She didn't throw you in, but you jumped in the water to show her that you had faith. >> Yeah. >> Because it was a test from God. >> Yes. >> And who told you it was a test from God? >> Um, mom. >> Mom told you that. >> But it was I believe >> I'm okay with that. But you had to believe. >> Like I'm not sure. It was a test from God. >> Okay. And she said that um we were her children but um we were gods and she must give us to God and this is God was testing us for this to see if we had faith. >> Okay. >> And it's true that that's what happened. It is >> okay. >> Then I jumped in the lake too. >> When when her mind gets in her mental state or we call it crisis is what we call it. You told me so she basically cannot sleep. >> Yeah. >> And you're saying she had been working through this problem for how long do you think? A couple months. >> Well, yeah. Lately, it's been a lot better, but I guess this week, uh, and just like last weekend, she was doing really good. Uh, >> okay. >> And then just the last day or two, and yesterday was her 40th birthday, and >> Okay. >> they wanted to do something and, uh, then they decided to come down here, I guess. But uh so yesterday morning we uh she was yeah she was uh I guess before we got there they were they were praying. >> Okay. >> And uh when the family the rest of the family got there cuz they didn't answer their phone. So the whole family was praying and uh and uh they felt that Jesus is coming back very soon and but finally one of the sisters >> uh talked to her and uh got through to her and they came back out. When I first I seen her, she came back out and she like we can't believe how stupid or how we acted and they were just like normal. >> So they you think they >> and she took we uh made a circle there >> took hold of hands and we prayed and we took turns. Couple of guys prayed and and we left and they were in good spirits and but at the same time we still did not feel they're very private family. They open to anybody. >> Okay. but very private and we didn't we didn't know was that just a front but it was kind of first that us it was usually just family and they talked to us about it but other family and they didn't really want to involve us >> too much but um so I guess I still didn't feel good but for us the first time be involved hey you've got to go somewhere we got to take you to the psych war on our 40th birthday it was just we talked about it last night I talked to the parents and and uh we we've discussed uh uh consularors who who cuz we knew it's going to it's just temporary what uh what uh we were seeing there. >> So you felt like in not so many words the way I understand is you felt that she was somewhat better enough to maybe get through the day. However long term you're thinking we have to get her placement someplace because she's having enough episodes that it's causing problems. Now what about him? Did he get show any signs of that to you or did he >> he's always been the strong person in the family and but I think it wore him down is what I really think happened. It wore him down where >> Let me call you right back. >> I'm not quite sure. Uh he made Yeah, it's >> kind of hard to explain. Uh he called a couple guys this week. Okay. >> Explaining or and told them, "Hey, I just wanted you to know that I really appreciate you." >> Okay. And uh >> was that odd do you think? >> No. That's not that's not Mark at all. >> Okay. English. Do you think she would not maybe tell us if we were asking those questions specifically? Would she be more comfortable to tell an Amish person that she trusts uh more information than she would us cuz I know sometimes there's lines drawn in the sand there. >> Um and if it's a trust issue or I don't know or they don't feel comfortable, I've run into that, you know, because I have a personal experience sometimes. M. >> So, if you think that's the case and you know someone that would maybe be able to get more out of her, >> I do know her sister >> and her husband left to go down there and try and locate her just to see if she can talk to him. >> And she might. >> Okay. >> Ruth Miller was indicted on charges of aggravated murder, assault, domestic violence, and child [music] endangerment. She was found not guilty on all charges by reason of insanity and has since been committed to a psychiatric facility.
