You're the one hiding under a bed. I don't know what you have or what you're doing. >> I don't have anything. >> Listen. >> So, today's body cam features a woman who took a simple trespassing complaint and thought to herself, "You know what this situation needs? Some more bad decisions." What follows is the officers allowing multiple chances for this woman to take her belongings and just go. And of course, she refuses every solution presented to her. And she somehow still acts shocked when a free ride out of the campground results in a free ride to jail. >> On June 10th, 2023, officers responded to a campground for a call of a woman trespassing. >> So, we have the campground down here. >> Yep. >> Someone I don't know how they got in here, if they took somebody's key, or if they just drove around cuz her car is beat to [ __ ] Okay. Uh but she is hiding inside a camper. And I knocked several times. >> Is it on your property then? >> Yes. Okay. >> But she is not supposed to be down here. >> Sure. >> At all. It's like the like the person she used to date has nothing to do with her. And uh >> Does the person she used to date have your had your permission? To what? To be here? >> Yeah. >> He rents a lot, but she is not on the lease. >> Okay. >> She and he's not even down here. >> Okay. >> She's down here by herself. Just I don't know how she got down here. I don't know if she drove around the gate because, you know, there's no water, sure, whatever. But she was causing problems last night and uh threatened somebody on Facebook this morning >> Okay. >> that's down here. So, if she's not supposed to be here at all. >> Okay. >> So, I I'll uh are you coming down too or >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, I'll let you guys pull in so I can knock this stuff. >> Sure. Melissa, it's the sheriff's office. Come to the door, please. >> [clears throat] >> Melissa, come to the door. It's going to get forced and you're just going to go to jail. Come to the door. You're not under arrest right now, but you need to speak with me. >> I love how they add in the whole you're not under arrest right now. >> [laughter] >> It's like their gentle way of saying you better come out and talk to us otherwise we're going to come in and get you and you're not going to like it. >> Melissa, come to the door now. Melissa, come out here now. >> We got a closed door in the room. >> I'm going to go less lethal. >> I used a less lethal but I'll go less. >> Melissa, come out here now. >> Solid. >> Can you lift up the wood lift up? Get out here. >> Melissa. >> Get out here now. You're going to get tased. Are you stuck? Are you stuck? >> No, I'll be fine. >> She under that the freaking storage bed? I DID. >> [laughter] >> I COULDN'T EVEN TELL IT WAS HER. I COULDN'T EVEN TELL IT WAS HER. I THOUGHT IT WAS LIKE A PILE OF CLOTHES or something. AND THEN THEY lifted up and they're like, "Melissa, come out." And you just hear you JUST HEAR HER >> [laughter] >> THEY'RE LIKE, "ARE YOU STUCK? Are you stuck?" Wow, she was hiding under the the the storage bed. Wow, wow. Is she stuck? I am dying to know. >> Where's your other hand? >> On the left, right here. >> Do you have any weapons with you? >> I got no I have no weapons. >> Well, I don't know that. I've never met you before. Give me my Give me your hand. >> No, it's my legs that are in the way. >> Maybe you should move the blanket. Give me your hand. Are you going to [ __ ] listen to me? Stop. >> Oh my god. >> Get out. >> Thirsty. >> Help. Well, then maybe you shouldn't be hiding in the >> It'd be a little bit nicer if you just listen to us and maybe you can get some water. >> Get over here. >> That was it. >> Get over here. Don't [ __ ] reach for nothing. I told you to stop. I told you to stop. >> Holy [ __ ] >> Quit reaching for [ __ ] I don't know what you have in here. >> pretending like I am >> Stop. >> I mean, you're acting like I am crazy. >> Oh, lady, it's cuz you look crazy. They found your ass hiding under a bed. >> [laughter] >> You were stuck. You were stuck and pinned under a storage >> [laughter] >> under a storage bed. They're acting like you're crazy because you appear crazy. And I I wish that people understood why police take the precautions that they do and they have to treat everybody the same because they have to protect themselves. They have no idea what you're capable of. They could have literally lifted that storage bed and you could have started shooting at them. They don't know. And come on, let's let's look at the situation as a whole here, honey. You look crazy, okay? There's nothing about you that doesn't look crazy. I'm just just being real. Look like a nut job. You look like you need to be escorted to the funny farm, okay? Let's just let's just be truthful and honest here about this current situation that I don't even understand. Like So, she's squatting? She's staying in this guy's in this guy's camper and she doesn't have the right to be there? Like, what are you doing, lady? >> You're the one hiding under a bed. I don't know what you have or what you're doing. >> I don't have anything. >> Listen, I don't know that. >> I don't have [ __ ] to hide from you. >> Okay, well if you believe it or not, people listen, people lie to me every day. Would you believe that? >> I believe that. But I'm not lying to you. >> Okay. >> [laughter] >> I mean, you know you know that you're not allowed on this property, right? >> Yes, and I'm going to leave. I will absolutely leave, but I did not I have not done anything wrong. I have not >> Well, you're you're trespassing. You're trespassing. >> I am but I'm not because he told me I could be here. He was supposed to be bringing my stuff. I'll show you >> What's up? >> the messages from him. >> the owner of the land says you are not supposed to be here. >> I know because you all of a sudden you said that it wasn't okay. >> You have to go. >> Because I had told him and like that I had been sitting here all weekend waiting for you to bring my mail and just >> No, I'm talking about the mail. >> [ __ ] >> mail. >> No, I know and I understand what Paul was saying. I I know Paul and Paul knows me. I'm not This is not anything new. I'm not >> Right, but >> being a jackass. >> But if if a owner of a property doesn't want you on their land, you can't come here anyway. >> I know. >> So, hold on. Hold on. >> I was doing that and I was doing that and I was >> was doing that. >> And you did [clears throat] that. >> I did. >> So, if you know you're not supposed to be somewhere and you go there, that's criminal trespass. How did you get around the gate? >> I can't I can't tell you that because that would get that person in trouble. >> that. Let me tell you something. >> Stop. >> He will do that. >> Did someone Did someone let you in? >> Yes. >> Okay, that's all you have to tell me. >> Someone let me in. >> Okay, that's all you have to say. >> It's >> So, what do you What do you have in here that's yours? So, this is what's going to happen. All right? You're going to get cited for criminal trespass to property instead of Instead of in lieu of you going to jail, you're going to get a ticket and you're going to have a notice to appear in court. Understood? >> That's fine. >> Have you been drinking today? >> Yes and >> [laughter] >> Have you been drinking today? Just a little officer. >> [laughter] >> Oh my god, she was hiding under her bed. She was hiding under her bed. I mean, sounds like a fair shake to me. You're not supposed to be there. It's criminal trespass. You just You take your citation, you appear in court, they'll give you a ride. End of story, right? Right? Please tell me that this is the end of her story. >> That's why I told him I can't I cannot drive right now. >> Incredible. >> I can't. So, >> Yeah, that's why >> if he could just let me live here, then tomorrow morning >> He's not going to do that. He wants you gone right now. >> Well, I can't. So >> You don't have a choice. You're leaving today. >> Then I'll walk. I'll just walk that way. >> What are we going to do with your car? >> [laughter] >> Cuz then you >> That's what I'm saying is they all know that that's fine. Everything has been done, but all of a sudden >> Well, we got multiple things. You're intoxicated, so you can't drive it. You're suspended. Your license is suspended, so you can't drive it. >> Yes. >> So, and you have to leave right now. >> Yes. So, I will walk out of here. >> I'm going to drive you I'm going to drive you >> today. >> You're going to get >> I walked that way. >> Perfect. You're going to get driven somewhere today though. You're not walking. I'm going to You're going to be escorted out of this property. >> So, where are you walking me to then? >> to drive you to wherever you want to go in town. >> have to figure out who's going to come back and get me and figure this [ __ ] out because this is [ __ ] that he's done. >> You're going to >> I have like this is not >> If you're If you've made the decision, so you're going to have to figure it out once I get you out of here. One more opportunity. Get your belongings and we're going to leave. >> But I can't. >> Are you going to comply with that? >> I can't drive back here then. >> You're not going to drive back here. You're going to move Once you sober up and you need to get your car, then you can make arrangements with >> you taking me? And then my car is still going to be here. >> Where do you >> How am I supposed to figure that out? >> Where do you want to go? I can take you anywhere you want. >> Indiana. >> Well, I can take you to some >> So, it's not going to be there. >> Right. >> And I know >> I can take you somewhere in Morris. >> Call him. >> Who? >> Call Call Patrick right now. >> nothing to do with this. >> Yeah, it does. Cuz he's the one that told me to stay here and wait for him because he was bringing my [ __ ] >> It's a violation of the order of protection. I can't contact I can't contact him on your behalf. >> Good God, you guys just sit here and look AT THAT [ __ ] >> NO, NO, LISTEN, we're we are done here. >> That is not >> Where are we taking Where are we taking you? >> Nowhere. >> Are you going to go? >> Yeah, I'm going to drive >> Damn it, lady, just tell them a place where they can take you because if you don't give them a place, they're going to decide for you and it's probably going to be jail. You're probably going to go to county IF YOU DON'T GIVE THEM A location to drop your drunk ass off at. They will make the decision for you and you're not going to like it, please. For your own sake, just give them a place. Just give them a location to drop you off of and then figure it out later. Oh my God, she's going to go to jail. She's going to go to jail. >> I've myself out here. >> drive out. You can't drive >> I can drive out of here and I can >> You're intox- >> sit. >> You're intoxicated. >> Jesus Christ. >> Are you going to >> Fine, then drop me off right outside. >> that. I'm taking you to somewhere in town so you can't come back here and cause problems. >> Where are you going to do that? >> A hotel, a motel, a restaurant, anywhere. >> I don't have the money for that. So, what are you going to do? >> I'm asking you. >> What are you going to do? >> I'm asking >> need that. Right now, what I have is somewhere to lay my head. >> I understand that. >> So, leave me to be here where I have somewhere to lay my head. >> Yep, you're under arrest. You're going to jail. >> What do you guys want? Please. >> I wanted you to comply. Stop. Stop. Put your hands behind your back. You got them? >> Yeah. We've given you about 800 opportunities. >> What do you guys want me to do right now? >> Well, nothing cuz you're going to jail. >> I mean, seriously, where am I supposed to be? >> Stand up. >> Stand up. >> Where am I supposed to be this person? I've absolutely admitted to you. >> I tried to work with you. I've given you I've given you about I've given you about 800 opportunities, more than I normally would. >> What did you want me to say? >> I wanted you to say, "I'll get my belongings, Sergeant Corey, and we can go somewhere." >> I was actually that person. >> No, you weren't. Both of us have our body cameras on and you were absolutely not that person. >> All right. >> So, let's go. >> The woman was charged with criminal trespassing [music] and resisting arrest. >> So, there is one lesson to take away from today's body cam, right? Not every arrest starts with a major crime. Sometimes it just starts out with a simple request followed by a terrible decision followed by another terrible decision followed by about 50 more terrible decisions. They really did give her opportunities. They're like, you know, "Tell us. WHERE ARE WE GOING TO DROP your drunk ass off? Just give us a place." And she couldn't do it. I understand that she didn't want to be dropped off somewhere if she didn't have the money for it, like a restaurant or a hotel or a freaking bar or, you know, whatever. But, dang, man, she just It didn't have to be that way. It didn't have to be that way. Man, that hiding place was a good one though. Hiding in [laughter] that Hiding in the storage under the bed, that'd been a good one if the cops didn't think to look in there.
