Didn't I just hear you say that this is BECAUSE YOU'RE BLACK? >> YES, SIR. >> NO. >> YES, IT IS. >> TODAY'S body cam footage is a perfect example of why sometimes the best choice is to just take the win and go home. It all started out as a simple handicap spot violation and it quickly turned into one of the most frustrating police encounters that you'll see all week. Trust me, by the end of this video, you're going to be amazed at how many chances someone can throw away in just under 15 minutes. >> On July 23rd, 2022, officers approached a woman who was parked in a handicapped space without a handicap placard. An interaction that ended up escalating way more than it needed to. >> Do you have a handicap placard? Does anyone in this vehicle have a handicap placard? It's a yes or no question. Does anyone in the vehicle have a handicap placard? I'm going to take that as a no. >> That's my mom. >> Okay. Do you have Are you the one driving? Can I see your driver's license? >> I don't have a handicap sticker. I don't have a handicap sticker. >> This is your vehicle? >> Yeah. >> Your driver's license. >> Yeah. >> Do you >> I don't have a ID. >> I do. >> Can I ask you a question? >> What? >> So You don't have a handicap sticker. You don't have a handicap sticker. That's for people who are handicapped. >> I I don't know what you What What are you wanting? >> Because you're probably going to take me to jail. >> Do you have a warrant? >> Yes, we do. >> My grandson. >> Okay. What's your warrant >> For traffic tickets. >> Okay. Do you know how much your bond is? >> $900. >> 900? Okay. And I guess you don't have $900. Okay. And this is your mom? >> That's my grandmother. >> Your grandma? >> Wait. My kids are going to go to DCFS. I got a DCFS case already. So, if you take me to jail, my kids are going straight to DCFS. She can't take my kids. >> Why Why can't she take your kids? >> I don't know what she has. I got >> $3. See, I'm trying to tell you my grandma that can't take my kids. I'm not I'm telling you the rundown on what's I can't even call my kids right now, but well, I I >> Oh god, really? Okay. This is common sense and common sense is not so common anymore. She's got a warrant for traffic tickets. Okay. Lots of people can have warrants for traffic tickets and not even know it. It's a thing, you know, you don't pay your tickets, you end up getting a warrant issued. Sometimes people don't know that that can happen, but she knows it and kudos to her for being upfront with the police officer and saying, "Yeah, I got warrants." Secondly, I understand why if grandma is sick or something, you can't take the kids, you're worried about, you know, child protective services coming for your kids if the officer takes her away to jail. I even understand that. What I don't understand, the common sense part that I don't understand, why are you going to do something illegal knowing all of these things? It sounds like she has an an active DC Is it DCFS? I don't know. >> [laughter] >> DCFS? Is that what it is? Uh CPS? I just call it CPS. She must have an active CPS file because she seems to know a lot about this and she seems to know that they're just going to come take her kids if she gets hauled off. SO, RIDDLE ME THIS. Knowing all of these things, why are you doing something illegal? Just because you don't want to walk very far? Seriously? You're like, "I need I need to go get some [ __ ] at Walmart. I don't want to walk very far. So, therefore, I'm going to illegally park in a handicap spot and just hope just cross my fingers and hope that a police officer doesn't notice my vehicle without a handicap placard parked in a handicap spot." This could have all been avoided. You just park like 15 ft down, you know, and just walk your happy ass into Walmart with your kids and then you're doing it legally. And then you don't have to worry about getting arrested for your freaking warrants. You don't have to worry about DCFS QMP XYZ coming for your kids. IT'S SO SIMPLE. WHY IS COMMON SENSE NOT COMMON ANYMORE? >> I DON'T know how to call DCFS. >> No, that's not going to happen. She can't take my >> Don't worry about that. We'll take care of what you need. >> I don't have nobody. I don't know. That's why I can't really get wipes from her. I don't I stay in a shelter in East St. Louis. >> Okay. >> If you come up here to get wipes, that's fine. Don't park in a handicap spot. It's not for you. >> Yes, ma'am. >> Do you have 2581? >> Ma'am, do you have someone you can call to come get her kids? Okay, who Who have you gotten hold of to come get the kids? I know you've made a couple phone calls. I know you've made a couple phone calls. Who have you gotten hold of? >> Nobody. It's after hours. It's on a weekend. >> Okay, so it's just DCFS you're trying to get hold of? >> One Hope United. It's a office and it's like a step in between DCFS. I called One Hope United. I called them. >> Okay. >> And I called them, but they're not answering cuz they're they're not open on weekends. >> Um besides your grandma, who else in your family lives around here? >> Don't have nobody else. >> You got a lot of issues going on here. You have a suspended driver's license. I'm going to bet you probably don't have insurance, either, do you? >> Uh-uh. I just got my car. This is like my first day driving. And I just came up here just to get some wipes cuz I didn't have no money. >> You cannot be serious. You can't be serious right now. You're a mother. You're a mother. YOU HAVE TO do better than this. Mothers, fathers, when you have children that are depending on you, you have got to do better. Suspended driver's license. No insurance. Warrant for traffic violations. Parking in a handicap spot without a handicap placard puts a giant spotlight right on you. And you have a bunch of [ __ ] You got a bunch of You got a bunch of skeletons in your closet that you don't want the police officers saying, "SO, DON'T SHINE A LIGHT ON YOURSELF, DUMBASS." Oh my god, these poor children. These poor children have an idiot for a mother. Not even going to be nice about it. She's stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Do better for your kids. >> All right. Keep seeing if you can make some phone calls, figure something out. I'm walking. >> So, and by the way, your warrant's 800, not 900. >> Oh, well, in my case, well, she actually told me 900. >> Well, she was off. It's 800. My dispatcher just told me, okay? >> I mean, we need that 800 now. >> Okay. >> I mean, >> How come you haven't gone to the courthouse and talked to them about your warrant? >> I was at court, actually, earlier this last month, and I didn't go to court because they were going to take me to jail at court. >> Okay. >> And so, I don't have arraignment yet to get my kids >> Well, you you got to get this taken care of because a lot of times they can give you a new court date. >> No, cuz they What happened was they kind of put everything that I had all together. They already gave me new court dates. It's like stuff from like 3 years ago. >> It would Is it a failure to appear warrant? Or is it new new charges? >> New charges over the years, over the last 3 years. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Go ahead and stand over by your vehicle, okay? I don't want people back there. >> Excuse me, ma'am. Should I grab the car seats to put in your car? >> Put them in their car seats in your car. Put them in their car seats in your car. Are you not listening to me? Put them in their car seats in your car. >> No, cuz she doesn't want to ask how to pick up with the >> I don't want to do this with you. >> He held me down. >> He held somebody down. >> Didn't I just hear you say that this is BECAUSE YOU'RE BLACK? >> YES, SIR. >> NO. >> YES, IT IS. >> YOU WANT TO LISTEN? YOU WANT TO LISTEN TO ME? >> LADY, HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE ARE PARKING IN THE HANDICAP? DON'T TOUCH ME. HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE ARE PARKING IN THE HANDICAP WITH OUT A HANDICAP STICKER? I DIDN'T EVEN GO INSIDE THE STORE. ONLY BECAUSE YOU'RE WHITE, NOT BLACK. DON'T RAISE YOUR VOICE AT ME. >> DO YOU WANT TO LISTEN TO ME? >> IT'S BECAUSE YOU'RE WHITE, NOT BLACK. I DIDN'T EVEN GO IN THE STORE. I'M PARKED in the handicap because I WAS GETTING SOMETHING FROM MY GRANDMOTHER WHITE. >> HOLD ON. >> SORRY. I'M JUST A BYSTANDER BUT I I'm fostering here with DCFS and I can tell you like all this is not worth it. >> You already got a DCFS case. >> Listen to her. Listen to her. >> SO, THEN WHAT THE [ __ ] ARE YOU GOING TO DO I CAN'T >> [applause] >> THIS BYSTANDER MAN, OKAY. This is she's literally trying to diffuse the situation because she knows what these kids are about ready to go through. I don't think she works for DCFS but it sounds like she fosters for DCFS and she probably sees and hears about a lot of these kind of stories where mothers kind of just like go off the rails or fathers go off the rails and the kids end up getting put in foster care because the parents end up getting hauled off to jail because they are shooting their mouths off and losing their damn minds for no flipping good reason. So, good for her for stepping in and trying to diffuse the situation because obviously grandmom ain't doing it. Grandmom is not diffusing the situation at all. So, it's up to this bystander who knows a little bit about the system to try to get this mother to calm her [ __ ] down. I cannot believe that she is making this about race. I cannot believe she's making this about race. It is because you are illegally parked in a handicap spot. All these other cars are parked in a handicap spot. Yes, but I bet you that they have a freaking placard hanging from their rear view mirror. I bet you they do. Has she gone over and looked? I want to see this woman if she truly wants to make this about race. I want to see her ask the police officer to escort her to the other vehicles and look and see if there's a handicap placard in every single window. But she won't do that because it's easier just to say that it's about race and to just get up on a high horse and start screaming and yelling even louder. That's That's typically what happens in these situations and that's really sad and extremely frustrating because that is not what it is about at all. It is not. >> I CAN'T SAY CUZ THAT'S YOUR JOB. YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO STOP. WHY DID YOU STOP? >> OKAY, BUT LISTEN. >> WHY DID YOU STOP? >> I can answer your question if you shut your >> Because you heard what I said. >> Hey, let her talk. >> Do you want to listen to me? Do you want to listen to what I have to say? >> I don't. >> Well, I do. >> I will tell your grandma to tell me. >> Ma'am, I am not going to take her to jail. >> I JUST TOLD YOU. >> YOU'RE not taking me to jail. THAT'S WHAT NO. YOU'RE ONLY NOT TAKING ME TO JAIL >> IT'S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS. THAT'S WHY SHE'S NOT TAKING me to jail. >> It's all about THE KIDS. >> THAT'S WHY SHE'S NOT TAKING ME TO JAIL. >> CUZ YOU LET ME I LET ME I GOT TO FIGURE OUT what's going to HAPPEN WITH MY KIDS. >> NO. >> YES, she is so inappropriate. >> She is. She is. >> And this has zero to do with the black. She's in a handicap spot. You have a handicap placard because you need a handicap placard. Okay, so and so >> Did you hear her? She said something derogatory about you. So I guess maybe that's what I used that >> Handicap they don't like >> No. >> Oh, you didn't hear that? >> I never heard a single word. Yeah. I didn't hear a single word. I stopped because as I'm driving through, I looked over and I said, "Who's in a handicap placard on there?" I backed up. I didn't even get out of my car. I just said, "I need a handicap placard." So, no. This has zero zero to do with race, okay? This has 100% to do with a handicap parking violation, Now, she would have gone to jail for less. Yeah, I can take her to jail. Yeah, I can put her kids in DCFS. I elected not TO DO THIS WAS If this was >> She's crazy. >> If this was about race If this was about race, she would be in handcuffs right now. It's not about race. Okay? So, she's going to get a ticket for parking in a handicap spot. >> THERE ARE OTHER CARS UP HERE THAT DON'T have a handicap >> This officer is being way too nice. Now, do I want these poor children to end up in the foster system and and have their entire world be rocked and have these children be be traumatized. Absolutely not. Children are so fragile and innocent. They do not ask to be born into this world and they do not ask to be born to the parents that they have. That is why we have to do as best as we can for our kids because they did not ask for this. These kids did not ask to be dealt the hand that they were dealt with being born to this woman. They didn't ask for it, okay? Do I want these kids to be traumatized and taken away? Absolutely not. But this police officer is being very kind. This woman has a warrant for arrest. She is also driving on a suspended driver's license. She is also driving without insurance. She could be hauled off to jail right now and this police officer is saying, "I'm not going to do that." Just for the kids. "I'm not going to do that." And this woman is still shooting her mouth off and continuing to escalate an already bad situation and she's about ready to make it worse. I can feel it coming. I can feel it coming. She's not backing down and she's [ __ ] on this officer's kindness right now and it's going to kick back in her face. Just you wait. It's I'm waiting for it. It's going to be really hard to see. It's not going to be as satisfying as some of the other videos that we watched because there are kids involved and that's really sad. >> Okay, she only did this because I'm black, baby, and she got a and she's white got a control and she got power. That's literally the only reason. It ain't a race thing. YOU DON'T GOT TO TRY to make it but that's what it is. They go run the place so everybody up here handicap. This is not a race thing. >> This is not a race thing. >> Check everybody up here who who parked their handicap. >> Do you want to get this finished up or do you you want to just stand here and yell all night? >> Listen. If I do your job. >> Okay. I am doing my job. I'm giving you a ticket for your handicap violation, okay? I'm not even taking you to jail. >> Do your job. Take your ticket. >> No. >> No. No. >> Ma'am, you got kids right here. Listen, you do not want your kids to >> Cuz you talk too much. >> No, you don't. >> You know what? You've already got a DCFS case. Here's a DCFS worker >> Cuz you don't want to argue. >> Cuz she don't know what to do with my kids unless I take me to jail. THEN DO YOUR JOB. >> NO, LISTEN. LISTEN. >> HONEY, the last thing you want is your kids in a It could be worse than that. >> Like I said, so they run everybody car up here that say that's parked in a handicap. >> Let her do her job. That's what she's finished with you. >> If that's her job is to run everybody here and then run then run everybody [ __ ] up here that's parked in a handicap. >> Just take your ticket and leave. >> what you finna do when you leave me? Cuz that that better be what the [ __ ] you finna do. And you finna run everybody [ __ ] UP HERE. >> TAKE YOUR TICKET and leave. >> Are you finna run everybody [ __ ] up here? >> Just go home. Just go home. Take the kids and go home. >> Take your chance to walk away right now. >> You ain't even talking to me. Honey, please. For the love of God, would you please just go home? >> No, I'm not. >> No. >> I am not going home. >> you need to listen to your grandma. >> Take the kids and go home. Ain't talking to you. >> Did she seriously just apologize to her grandmother and then follow it up with I'm not backing down. I'm not going home. Is that seriously what she just said? That's what it sounded like she just said. I'm sorry, but I'm not backing down. I'm not just going home. You were going to get away. You have a chance to evade arrest with a warrant, with multiple police officers on site now. Driving on a suspended license, driving without insurance, parking in a handicap spot illegally. You're about ready to squander this opportunity with your children watching. She absolutely is going to deserve this, but her kids do not. >> Would you please stop? >> This woman is going to jail and these kids will have to go to DCFS have to ask no one that can take them. >> She's trying to give you a break here to take the tickets >> I didn't even go I didn't even >> Just because you >> I pulled up right here just to get some white people >> SHE SAID GO >> I PULLED UP HERE AGAIN. I PULLED RIGHT NEXT to her. COME ON. >> YEAH. I'M FIXING to call grandma. >> Just because you don't like how something went. >> But you're making us here grandma. You >> No. No. >> Yeah. >> I'm ready to. >> Are you going to take this or not? Or I'll put it inside your vehicle. >> Be careful. Excuse me, ma'am. >> Easy. Excuse me, ma'am. Don't touch my vehicle. >> I'm not taking Get out. >> Then put it under the All right. Listen. >> You what? You are getting real close. >> Give me the baby. >> Ma'am, you're touching me. >> Can I have your baby? Can I hold her? Ma'am, can I hold your baby? >> There we go. >> You might want to call someone to drive you because you've got a suspended driver's license. You have no insurance. >> take me to jail then. >> Go ahead and get out. >> How am I going to get home? You don't make no >> Go ahead and get out. >> You guys are stupid. >> Go ahead and get out. Call Grace. >> You guys are stupid as >> And you need to stop >> I came all the way UP HERE CUZ I GOT NO RIDE. >> I'M SORRY, GRANDMA. >> NO, YOU'RE NOT. YOU'RE DISRESPECTING ME. >> I'm the one that >> You're making me look really, really bad. >> I'm sorry. >> No. >> She's good. >> No. This is white >> Hey. >> Ma'am. >> What? It's not >> Look at her when she >> It's a white people [ __ ] >> No. >> This has nothing to do with race. >> No. Like I said, they run everybody crazy. They don't even have >> Hey, that is part of my >> They don't have one right there. That black >> And that's where we're going to go to next. Okay. Let us do our job, okay? >> Is he saying What are you talking about? >> He said no, he's a grandfather. >> And he's able to drive? >> Yeah, he can drive the car. >> And he can drive her car? >> Yeah. >> I'm not GOING TO HAVE NO WHITE RACIST ASS [ __ ] HAPPEN. >> OKAY. >> Y'ALL DOING THIS [ __ ] cuz I >> No, I'm sorry, Renee. This stuff you're saying is not true. You're just saying that. >> [ __ ] ass piece OF WHITE PEOPLE >> WHY DON'T YOU STOP? NO, WHAT? >> YOU KNOW WHAT? >> CUZ IT'S NOT RIGHT. >> IT IS NOT RIGHT WHAT YOU'RE DOING. >> OKAY, BUT WHAT SHE DID IS RIGHT, GRANDMA. >> BUT SHE'S THE LAW. >> IT DOESN'T MATTER. >> IT DOES. >> [ __ ] [ __ ] [ __ ] >> PUT HER IN THERE. >> PUT YOUR HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK. IF YOU WANT YOU'RE GOING JAIL, you're going to jail. >> I don't want I don't want your kids to see you with handcuffs or nothing. This is not what it has to be. >> This is white people [ __ ] >> No, this is you bringing this on yourself. >> I tried to catch you a break. I tried to let you go home with your kids. >> Like I said, I I have a two sets of keys. Can you get the ones out of my fanny pack? >> All right, Grandma, can you get the ones out of your fanny pack for you? >> I need them so I can get to drive my car when I get out of jail and take my kids. And how how y'all going to get their car seats? >> Grandma's here. Your grandpa's going >> No, she's not she's not They can't take them. My grandpa doesn't know how to watch kids. He didn't can't do nothing with my kids. So, my kids have to come with me. >> You you guys can't go to jail. >> They have They have no choice cuz they not going to jail. >> They're not going to county. >> Yes, they are. >> No, they're not. >> This is what I Then y'all going to call DCFS and tell >> That's why That's why you're not If you're not listening to us, then what? >> That means DCFS is going to come get my kids. My kids cannot stay here with my grandmother. They're not staying here. >> So, where's the keys at? >> Where where >> What are you doing? >> All right, Nate, where's the keys at? >> Stop. >> Please stop. Just give me my keys, bro. >> Your kids are not going to jail. Stop. >> My kids are my kids. >> I'll stop. >> Your kids are not going to jail. Keep >> No, you keep trying to push against me, okay? >> Where's the big fluffy thing? Grandma did it. >> The what? >> It's the big fluffy thing. >> Oh, god, this is so so stupid. All you had to do was just be here. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Because it's not right. It doesn't matter right now what's right or wrong. Doesn't matter. >> Okay. >> She can't take our kids. >> Please stop resisting. >> Please stop by grandmother. >> Please stop resisting. >> And you saying I'm not your grandmother? Are you saying I'm not your grandmother? Look at the camera so I'm telling y'all that y'all are leaving my kids with a stranger. >> Okay, well, your grandfather's coming then. How about that? >> Y'all cannot leave my kids with people that they don't know. >> You're going to pick up a resisting charge if you don't stop walking. >> Y'all leaving my kids with strangers. >> No, we're not. >> No, but then they're not going to leave your kids with strangers. >> Let's go. >> You want my driver's license? >> Yes, I do. >> Come on. >> Is she going back right now and saying that's not really her grandmother? Seriously, like is that is that just is that seriously a stranger because she literally said you're not leaving my kids with a stranger. Is that not really her grandmother? I mean this woman looked pretty offended when she said that and she was like oh well your grandfather is going to come drive your car home. Does she know her or not? Is she just trying to say this because she's like trying to disown her in this moment because her grandmother is not going along with this whole race thing. Is that what is happening right now? This is so incredibly stupid. I cannot believe it escalated to this. >> Stop resisting. Okay, look what you're doing to your kids right now, okay? >> MY KIDS ARE CRYING BECAUSE Y'ALL DIDN'T HAVE TO GO THIS FAR. >> GET IN THE CAR. SIT DOWN. Stop resisting. Stop You don't try to bite me. You do not try to bite me. >> Do not bite. >> Do not try to bite me. >> DO NOT I DIDN'T DO >> NOW SHE'S GOING TO GO FOR A FELONY CHARGE. >> YEP. >> STOP. >> You're about to get tased. You're about to get tased. >> Can I please get out? I'm tasing her on my car. Please get out. >> We cannot. >> Can I please get >> I didn't do anything. >> Can I please get out and go home? >> For your mother, if nothing else, for your mother. Would you stop? Yes, see >> She slipped her cuffs? How in the hell did she slip her cuffs? Man, she's a squirrely one. Dear God almighty. >> Can I please go home? >> Not now you're not. >> Please. Can I please go home cuz my kids are going >> I gave you that opportunity. >> Ma'am, I didn't understand why I didn't even stop it. >> How do I get this off? >> Can I please go home? >> You had your chance opportunity. >> Can I please go home? >> No, you had the chance. I tried to give you a chance. You refused the chance. Now you're going to jail and now you're going to be looking at a felony charge. >> I can't get a felony charge. >> You are looking at a felony charge. You kicked this officer. >> I didn't mean to. >> Yes, you did. >> mean to. >> No, cuz he was trying to bite me. >> I didn't try to bite. I don't even got teeth in my mouth, ma'am. >> Well, it's all on my camera, so >> [laughter] >> She said it, not me. She's like, I didn't bite the police officer. I don't even got teeth IN MY MOUTH. >> [laughter] >> I DON'T KNOW IF YOU BIT the police officer or not. I wasn't paying that close attention to that whole scuffle that was going on in the backseat, but you definitely kicked them, and you earned yourself a felony. Congratulations, and your children are witnessing it. >> Tried to bite me, so >> That's why I was kicking. I was trying to get my legs stuck out of there. I was just trying >> Kicking the crap out of the door. >> I wasn't trying to kick the I was trying to get my legs from entangled in this thing. >> Well, we're going to talk about it, cuz I'm going to give you a chance to make a statement, but it means that you're going to stay at RPD until Monday, and this case will be reviewed by the state's attorney's office to see if they charge you with felony um aggravated battery to a peace officer or not. >> The woman's children were placed in the custody of their grandparents. She was charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer, resisting or obstructing a peace officer, and was also booked on a warrant from another county. >> You know, as wild as this one is, it's also very, very sad, because it did not have to happen that way. It didn't. It didn't. She had so many outs, so many opportunities to go home, and every single opportunity was squandered, and that is absolutely sad, because you know what? I don't give a [ __ ] about her rotting in jail or having to deal with all of these charges. I care about her kids, and the fact that her kids are having to live with the fact that their mother is this way, and that's just it's really sad. It's really sad. It's It's perpetuating stereotypes, and it's also not helping the entire race thing. It's just It's not. It's not. It's really sad. It's It's disappointing, to say the least.
