- Police officers are tasked with maintaining law and order, and are well aware of the inherent dangers of their profession. But what happens when ordinary people find themselves in the center of situations that will test their own bravery? - Today Detective Dale will take us through five incredible stories of heroic citizens who put their lives on the line to assist law enforcement under dire circumstances. a North Brunswick, New Jersey police officer responded to a scene where an SUV had just crashed into a tree, and two passengers were trapped inside. The vehicle had erupted in flames, and the situation was growing more treacherous by the second. - [Officer] 13th section, pull me out with a signal four. 130 and Finnegan. (bystanders shouting) I got it, buddy. I got it, I got it, I got it. (bystanders chattering) (horn honking) - 10-4, okay. - Let's go. - [Dispatch] 213, do you need another unit? - [Officer] That's affirmative. Can you come out? Are you able to step out? - She has blood on her side. - Okay. You want to help me pull her out? Come on. - [Dispatch] Is there anyone in the area of 130 and Finnegan, to take a 75 for the signal four? - Okay, let's get this door open, ma'am. Come on, come on guys. We have a f*****g 100 guys here, get them up. Can you get the s**t. My house is right there, all I heard was the- - [Bystander] There's nobody else in the car. - Everybody out. (dispatch chattering) - Oh, the trailer hit y'all. - The trailer hit your car? - Why is it always right here? - It was that trailer? - It was the trailer. Right there. - Anybody see what happened? - [Dispatch] Route 130 and Finnegan Lane, by Deerbrook. (bystanders chattering) - [Bystander] No, it was, right there, the little car. - [Officer] All right, I'll try to head that way. - It was the trailer that ran the red light. - I seen the trailer, it ran the red light. - The trailer ran the red light. - [Officer] Central, we'll need EMS as well. - [Bystander] She lost control when she saw the trailer. - [Officer] So who's car is that in the middle over there? - That's where I left it. - [Officer] You gotta move it, you gotta move it. Who's car is that over there? Who's car is that over there? - Yo, you gotta move the car. - That's me. - Come on. - Get it outta here. - My hand is bleeding. Yeah, I cut my hand on the glass. (victim shouting) - You okay? (speaking Spanish), you need to stay down. - I was man, right there, right there. - [Officer] So who saw? Anybody see? - No I, tell them to go to my house. There's my house right there, I was in the back, and- - [Officer] Do me a favor, man. Now who you live over there? - My wife and kids. - Can you start calling them- - Wanna tell them to get out? - Tell them to get out? Yeah. - Go warn them- - And the tell her- - Yeah, you want me to go do it? - Yeah, and can you tell the neighbor, tell the neighbor too to get out. And nobody here saw what happened? - I was driving by, and I saw- - [Bystander] I heard everything that happened. I heard the car just go right into the tree. - I was just driving by and I saw the car flying, and I just stopped right there. - And I see, I know that it, way back. - Okay, you driving that truck? - Yeah. - Just wait inside the truck. - Yeah, but I gotta go, 'cause I'm- - [Officer] You gotta wait dude, you gotta wait. - Yeah. - Too bad, you gotta wait. Just wait inside the truck. (dispatch chattering) - [Bystander] Get out the house, get out the house. You need to get out the house, get out. (siren wailing) (officer and victim speaking Spanish) (wind whooshing) (siren blaring) (dispatch chattering) (bystanders chattering) - [Officer] They're gonna get your family, all right? - No, my family got out the house. It's cool, man. - [Officer] All right, then can you just tell them to get the neighbor out as well? - All right, yeah can you call her, and just tell here to get the neighbors, out, please? (bystanders speaking Spanish) - [Officer] Dude instead of recording it dude, hey do me a favor. Instead of recording, start calling people man, all right? (bystanders speaking Spanish) - [Officer] How long was that car there before, 'cause I- - What happened, I heard boom - Yeah, 'cause I saw- - About 10 seconds. - [Officer] I saw whoever parked, and then I see this car here. - All I heard it happen, and I just knew. I just started running right through here, came around and I seen them, and I just started trying to get everybody out the car. I was calling, getting everybody out. Whoo. (wind whooshing) (fire crackling) (bystanders chattering) - [Officer] 13 Central, 65 two times. (dispatch chattering) - It's always here. - [Officer] Whiskey 4-7 Foxtrot Papa Yankee, Whiskey 4-7 Foxtrot Papa Yankee. - It's always here, these accidents. It was just a month ago, same one. - [Officer] Give me one quick second. - Though the women have been pulled from the vehicle, the danger is far from over. If the flames make their way to the vehicle's gas tank, a powerful explosion will be imminent. Adding to the severity of the situation is the fact that the area is concentrated with people and residences. (siren wailing) (officer and victim speaking Spanish) - [Firefighter] Yo, is everybody outta the car? - Yeah. (firefighters chattering) - 32, got your 97. - 10-4. - You guys okay? - We had to pull her out. - Okay, are you okay? Look at me. (speaking Spanish), okay. (sirens chirping) (bystanders speaking Spanish) - What do you have to know, so I can get out? - [Officer] Huh? - Yeah, what do you have to know, what- - [Officer] You gotta get your documents. Go grab me your documents. - Oh, okay. - Hey Billy can you- - Hey look- - [Officer] Can you grab his documents? - I had nothing to do with the accident. - I still need it, though. - What? - I still need it. - Yeah, but I gotta- - [Officer] Because I gotta figure out what her story is, so once I figure out her story- - Look, I had nothing to do with the accident. - Okay. - Look, I see the accident, I stop, but I had nothing to do with the accident. (officers, victim and bystanders speaking Spanish) - [Officer] Okay, did you see anything happen? She said she was, I guess she said she was going this way. - No- - And that there was a car coming- - Yeah, right here. - Which car? - The Dodge, the Dodge. - The Dodge over there? - Yeah. - [Officer] Hey, do me a favor man. Can you go grab that Dodge's information? - But I don't have nothing to do, like I saw it. I have nothing to do with the accident. - [Officer] So she was going straight? - No, no, she was going same way, southbound, southbound. - And then what happened? - And the light was red. The light was red, red light. So I wait at the light and, (drowned out by dispatch) - Black Dodge Charger, in that lot, you got it? - The Dodge was like, crossing the street. - Okay, let me just grab your phone number, and then you can go, all right? - Campbell's already got it. - All right. - He's walking across with it now. - [Officer] All right, thank you buddy. You're good, all right? Thank you. - Officer, excuse me? - Yeah. - I was just stopping to help, help you out real quick. So I can leave then? - Yeah, you're good too. Don't worry about it, thank you for your help, man. - You're welcome. - All right. (bystanders chattering) (traffic whooshing) - You want me to tell you? - Ah, yeah. - This is the Charger, she was at the light, and the tractor-trailer barreled through first, 'cause she had a green light and she was getting ready to go across. And then this van was behind the tractor-trailer, that both barreled through. That bounced off the front of her car, which is why her plate was left in the middle of the intersection. And this is all her stuff here. She's not injured or anything. - [Officer] Did it hit her car at all, the Charger? - Yeah. - Where, at the end? - No they, that- - What's going with her. - [Officer] She's just, chest pains. We had to pull her outta the car, yeah. And then she's got arm pain. - Back or neck pain, anything like that? - [Officer] Yeah, we had to drag, we had to rip her outta the car. - Yeah, her knee's split open. - Good job getting her outta the car. - [Officer] Well, we gotta think whoever helped, it was a couple guys helping me. - We got the ambulance coming? - Hey, thank you man. - No, not a problem. You let it up, you let it up. Sorry man. - That's everything. - All right. You guys don't have any water, nothing I can clean my hands off with? - [Officer] I'll get something to clean. Ambulance is coming, I'll have them clean you up, all right? - Yeah no problem, thank you. - Yeah, so this here bounced off her car- - Hey, you guys got a jump bag? You guys got a jump bag here? - Huh? - EMS bag. - You got an EMS bag here? - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - You need anything? - [Officer] Can you grab an EMS bag outta the car? - Yeah, yeah, yeah. What, the- - The red bag, yeah. - McDonald. - Just give me a second, Campbell and I'll- - Later, yeah. - [Officer] And I'll grab everything from you. (bystander speaking Spanish) - [Officer] Yeah, we already have somebody coming here. - Back her up. (officer speaking Spanish) (officers and bystanders speaking Spanish) - [Officer] Nothing, I was going down. and then next thing you know, I see a car stop and runs across over here. And as I'm going around, the car starts getting on fire. - [Officer] Oh damn, I was gonna say, you see it all from the road or something? - [Officer] I don't, Campbell's got the story. - With the situation mostly under control, it seems everyone can take a brief moment to breathe a sigh of relief as they await the arrival of an ambulance to tend to the injured women. - Let's walk away, okay? (officers and victim speaking Spanish) - [Officer] Do you know her information? You know her information? (victim speaking Spanish) - [Officer] How do you spell that? (speaking Spanish) (officer and bystander speaking Spanish) - [Officer] Can you write her name down, her name? (bystander speaking Spanish) - Just write it down, her first name, last name and date of birth. (officer, bystanders and victim speaking Spanish) - Where'd that come from? - What? - [EMT] We gotta, we gotta go stabilize her with a backboard. We're gonna get the backboard, and do something with the head, we'll stabilize it. (responders and bystanders chattering) - What hurts? - What did that car hit? - Hey, bro. - I don't even know, 'cause I was right here, and I just doubled back around. I saw the car on fire and both of them were inside. (responders and bystanders speaking Spanish) - You got it for me? - I got it. (officer and responder speaking Spanish) - In the end, the captain said it best. "There is no doubt that lives were saved by the officer and good Samaritans who chose to pull over and help." I have to say though that the next story really takes the cake when it comes to defining bravery. - [Officer] Sheriff's Office, drop the gun. (gunshot blasting) (victim shouting) - [Officer] Shots fired, shots fired. a woman placed a frantic 9-1-1 call to report a harrowing incident that was playing out in her neighborhood in Whatcom County, Washington. - [Neighbor] My neighbor two houses past the stop sign is out there shooting his 12-gauge just at the neighbors behind us. - [Operator] And he's shooting at the neighbors? - [Neighbor] He was shooting into the air, but we live in a very crowded neighborhood. - Shortly thereafter, deputies Rathbun and Thompson arrived at the scene to take stock of the situation. From there, things deteriorated quickly. - [Deputy] 7-2 walking, give us the air. - [Deputy] I don't know what this guy's name is. - Front door. - Hey Ron, you wanna go back in the house? - [Deputy] Negative. - [Deputy] Why don't you give us the air again. Hey, sir. - Hey, you wanna shoot? - [Deputy] No, it's the sheriff's office. Why don't you come out with your hands empty and talk to us? Okay, well that's different. Sheriff's office, why don't you come out and talk to me with your hands empty? Drop the gun. - Get outta here. Shut your f*****g face. - Drop the gun. 7-4 walking. - Is he dropping it? - You got PC, so. - What do you want now? - Sheriff's office, drop the gun. - After several minutes of the suspect refusing to follow the lawful orders, the unthinkable happens and civilians are forced to step in. - [Deputy] Sheriff's Office, drop the gun. Ow. - Shots fired, shots fired. - Send aid, shot's fired. I'm hit. - 7-4 walking. (gunfire blasting) - [Deputy] Sit down, sit down, down. - [Deputy] Hey, gimme the air shots fired. We have two officers hit in the head. I don't have a whole lot. - Yes. - Yes, in the head. - We're both hit. - [Deputy] In the head, fellow officers hit in the head. - Where's your rig? - My rig's down there. - [Deputy] The exit, no. My cars are here. - I can drive. - Yeah, but we gotta get into the car. - [Deputy] I think his truck's gonna block. I'm gonna get in and pull forward. - [Deputy] Yeah, I'm covering you, you pull forward. - [Deputy] Yeah, what's your name up there, at the cross, is it Cody? Okay, just keep doing what you're doing, okay? - [Dispatch] Copy, we'll be at the turn off. - [Deputy] Walk to the sound of my voice. Keep walking, walk to me, walk to me. Walk to me, keep walking, walk to me. Walk to me, do it now, do it now, keep walking. On your face, get on your face. Get on your face, get on your face, hands out. - I got the house. - Hands out, to your side, all the way. Jared, out of the turret. - Allen, to me. - Do not fight. - I didn't. - Do not fight. - I never fought. - [Deputy] We're telling you right now, do not fight. - Is anybody else in the house? - Me? - Is anybody else in the house? - [Joel] Yeah, no. - [Deputy] Get him up and move him. This is 3-1 to command. The front door is still open. Don't know if anybody else is inside. (deputy and Joel chattering) Let's get him up and move him, we're hanging out here. - [Deputy] Sit up on your back. (deputy and shooter chattering) - Okay, moving. - Who's got a body cam? - I do. - I don't have any folks on it. - Wood, did you follow anyone over here? - What's your name? - Joel. - Joel what? - Put him in the back seat. - Joel who? - Young. - Joel Young? - [Joel] Young, Young. - Finally the standoff has come to an end, and the suspect, 60-year-old Joel Burke Young, has been placed in handcuffs. - You're on body cam, audio and video recording- - Hey, sound good? - Are being recorded. - Yeah. - Go ahead and give me a light. - Listen. - [Deputy] Stand low, back on the ground- - Did I have that in my pocket? - All right, it's 6:05 PM. - It's all good. - Just listen. - I'm listening. - [Deputy] Okay sir, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law. You have the right at this time to talk to a lawyer- - Cool, huh? - And have him present with you while you're being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you for any questioning, if you wish. - You guys got nothing to worry about. - You can decide, you can decide any time to exercise these rights and not answer any questions or make any statements. Do you understand each of these rights I've explained to you? - Sure, sir. - Okay, thank you. - 1806. - Deputy Brown. - Yes. - Put him in Deputy Wood's car and take him. - Yep. - Did we pat him? - You can, but I don't have nothing, can I have some shoes? - Where's Wood's car? - Right here. - Okay, let's go over here. - No. I shouldn't talk to this guy? Why, are you gonna punch me in the face? I'll go to jail, no problem. You don't have to drag me, I'm going, I'm going. I don't have nothing, I have nothing. Seriously, I have nothing. - Sit. - Mm-hmm. - Mr. Young, anybody else inside your house? - [Deputy] Confirmed with the neighbors. - [Joel] No, my son wanted to come home. I told him not to come by. I didn't really realize you guys were out here. - Have a seat. - If I did, I would've came out a lot earlier. - [Deputy] Hey I'm right, he did say this is our guy? - Yes. - Okay. - He said, pretty sure- - I'm going but- - He said yes. - You can throw me in. - Sit down please. - I'm trying. I have no shoes on, so I'm standing on rocks, okay? You can shoot me if you want, all right? - If not for the combined efforts of deputies and civilians, the situation could have ended much more tragically. Both deputies recovered from the injuries determined to be caused by birdshot, and returned to active duty several months later. - Joel Burke Young was charged with two counts of first degree attempted murder. If you found that harrowing incident to be intense, wait until you see what's up next. - Move it, move it. (officers chattering) Keep moving tough, let's go. - Pull out, go over. - A horrifying encounter unfolded on Albuquerque police officers responded to a call concerning an armed robbery, and it wasn't long before all hell broke loose. Once again, a heroic civilian had no choice but to intervene, placing himself in harm's way. - Drop the gun. (gunfire blasting) - An officer soon arrives at the scene where he engages with the victim of the robbery. - [Officer] What happened? Where did this happen at? - [Victim] So at my house I got dropped off. I was catching the bus up from Central, 301 Western Sky Drive Southeast. And I was walking and I see these two guys, and they asked me if I wanted drugs. And I was like, "No sir, I don't." And I was walking off, they called me again and then they walked up to me and pulled out a weapon. - Where did they walk up? - At my house, just- - At your house, or- - Not at my house, just like at the street. - There's a difference. - [Victim] Just at the street, by the street. - [Officer] Okay, on the street. And how many of them were there? - [Victim] Two. - [Deputy] Can you describe them to me? - [Victim] One was big and he had a big shirt, tan, tan-ish pants, and then he had a beanie on. The other one, and I think he had a backpack. - What type of shirt? - I do not know. - What color? - I think it was, like white, white shirt, and then his friend- - The other guy? - His friend, skinny. He had a black coat, he has my backpack on that says Puma, it has a puma and it's black, and it's black. - Okay, black coat? - Yes sir. And he has like a black hoodie on, and he- - With hoodie, right? - Yes sir. - Should have a backpack. - He has a backpack on, it's barely- - It's your backpack? - Yes sir, it's mine. - It's your backpack. - [Victim] They took it from me, they robbed me. - Backpack. - They pulled a gun out on me, sir. - Anything else, that was on there, in there? - He took my wallet. - Wallet? - Yes sir, that's it. - [Officer] Was the wallet on you, or was the wallet in- - [Victim] It was on me, then he took it from me, so I'm pretty sure he still has my wallet, unless he just threw it down. - What color was the wallet? - It was brown. - Let me ask you this. - Yes sir. - [Officer] It's very important. Why didn't you call us right when it happened, instead of giving them this little- - Because- - What was the deal on this? - Because- - It's just, there's a time limit with- - I know, sir. That's what I was thinking too. I was scared at first, and I went to go tell my mom. We wanted to go and find out and see, because my mom, she works for like the state or something, and she wanted to go and find them. And then when we came back, that's when my friend came by- - [Officer] And you understand, you guys aren't cops. - [Victim] No yeah, I understand that. - [Officer] You guys try to find them, what are you guys gonna do? - I understand. - [Officer] You can't hold them against their will. - [Victim] That's what I was telling my mom. - [Officer] You can't do anything like that. - [Victim] I was trying to tell my mom that. - [Officer] What, you're gonna take care of gangster-like business, I have a problem. - [Victim] I know, I know. I was trying to tell my mom that. And when my friend came and got me, we seen them down the road, and that's when, that's when I just called. - The officer collects the victim's personal information, as the investigation into the elusive suspects gets underway. Suddenly an unexpected development occurs. - [Officer] Now we've got an angry citizen, 'cause we stopped the wrong people. There again, they're- - Right there, sir. He has my backpack right there. - These guys- - Those are them, the tan-ish pants. - [Officer] We got people stopped behind McDonald's right now. - [Victim] Sir, he literally has, he has a gun on him sir. So you gotta watch him. He has a gun on him. - [Officer] Two subjects, currently under suspicion. They're gonna be up here by Meijer. I'm talking to the victim right now, what was the description? - [Victim] Tan-ish pants, walking over here. Has my s**t, p***y boy. - It's important- - [Victim] I'm telling you the truth, sir. - Gotcha, get in your car. - Sir. - [Officer] Stay right there, do not go anywhere. (dispatch chattering) We have a long-eye visual on right now at this time, while the victim is in his car. They're walking west on Sumner, they just passed the corner. (devices beeping) And be advised, the subjects are behind the bushes, along the alleyway. (devices beeping) Right there behind the bushes, like they just went behind the bushes there. I'm walking. (footsteps crunching) Over here, on your knees, on your knees, on your knees. (gunfire blasting) (officer shouting) - Shots fired. - Oh, f**k. They ran? (device beeping) Adam 5-32, he's gonna be behind, Adam 5-32, he's gonna be behind Federico's. Get down, get down. (gunfire blasting) (officers chattering) - Two officers down. (gunfire blasting) (dispatch chattering) - Drop the gun. (gunfire blasting) - Go, go, go. - Oh, f**k. He's still got the gun, he's still pointing the gun at us. Shots fired. (gunfire blasting) Got to go to the parking lot, you guys are still. (dispatch chattering) Behind Dutch Brothers. (gunfire blasting) Still shooting, he's hit. He's pointing a gun towards Federico's, he's reloading. (gunfire blasting) (siren blaring) (gunfire blasting) - Drop the gun. - Drop the gun. - Drop it. - It's shut down now, over. - [Officer] He's hit, I can't see the gun. - [Officer] I can't see him either. - [Officer] Do not reach for that gun. - [Officer] Is he separated from the gun? - [Officer] I can't tell, I can't see the gun. (dispatch chattering) - [Officer] Drop the gun, do it now, drop it. - [Officer] Could you see the gun, Sarge? - [Officer] I can't clear his hand. - [Officer] Looks like it might be in front of his stomach. I can't tell. - I can't tell either. Roll away from the gun, you'll get some medical help. - Finally one suspect is subdued, and several officers make their way over to where he's stationed on the ground. - Lie on your stomach. (officers chattering) Get down please, and lie on your stomach. - [Officer] I'm not sure where the second offender is either. - Arm broke. - Can any one advise? (officers and dispatch chattering) (sirens wailing) - [Officer] Do you know where he's from? Move him over. Give me your cuffs, let's go. - Roll around. - Roll over. - Roll around. (sirens blaring) - [Dispatch] Does anyone need medical attention? - [Criminal] My arm's broken, do not fire. - Big O, and 569. Make sure you go to Big O first. - [Dispatch] To Big O. (officers and dispatch chattering) - [Criminal] I can't breathe, I can't breathe. I can't sit up, can't breathe. Can't sit up, I can't breathe. (dispatch chattering) - He's got a knife. - Flip his shirt. - 600. - Where'd Mario get hit? - Did Diaz get hit? - I don't know. - Who was with him? - Eikel. I don't know, I saw Eikel there, I didn't see Mario. - [Officer] He was chasing him, behind in the alleyway. - [Dispatch] Juan Tabo and Constitution. - [Dispatch] Juan Tabo and Constitution. - The incident is far from over, as one suspect is still on the loose and it's unknown how many officers have been injured. Amid the chaos, a civilian by the name of Johnny Garcia emerges from his nearby yard and locates an injured Officer Verbeck in an alleyway where the gunfire originated. - [Officer] Now, where's the officer now? - Behind Big O. - Behind the Big O. Get here immediately, he's hurt Really bad. - [Officer] Big O Tire, or Big O? Big difference. - Big O. - Big O Tires, please. - Sumner and Juan Tabo. - Sumner and Juan Tabo. I'm gonna try to help you get out, okay? - Big O where? - Juan Tabo and Sumner. - [Johnny] Okay, okay, you okay, gonna do it? Okay, should I leave the gun and stuff? Do you want the gun, is this your gun right here? - Did you hear that? - Okay, let's walk. - [Officer] We still can't see the driver. - Put your head up, come on, come on. Come on, come on. - [Officer] So we need to all to the 34, on Sumner and Juan Tabo. - Right here, right here, right here. Yo, yo, yo. (panting) - [Officer] The unit is, AFR, 56-10. (Johnny and Verbeck chattering) (dispatch and officers chattering) - Do you guys wanna get this thing right here? - I got it, hold on. (dispatch chattering) - Unload it here. - I'm all good. - Okay. - We're gonna lean forward. - I can't breathe. - I'll sit on it. - Approaching northbound. - Juan Tabo? - Stay here. - Juan Tabo. - [Officer] Stay with me, okay? Talk to me Mark, talk to me, talk to me. - Hey. - Hey. I know, I know, okay. - [Officer] Hey Shana, I have Sean Green setting up a route. So if you have any questions, get to 203, 'cause we're gonna be heading out. - Ambulance just arrived. - Will do, sir. And 504 PD, we're also gonna need another 5-0 at Dutch Brothers, I know that's already been requested. - Stop, stop, stop. - Lie down, don't worry . - Miraculously, all officers involved in the incident survived. As for the suspect who engaged in the shooting, he took his own life while being held at a federal facility following the attack. - [Host] Sometimes it's hard to feel hopeful about the future, given all the turmoil in this world. After all, most news is bad news. But when stories like these make their way to the headlines, they have the ability to restore our faith in humankind. Our next citizen received an award as a result of his heroic act. - Sir. - Let go - Hold on, sir. - Don't fight an officer. Shut up, you're gonna get in more trouble, bro. Arkansas State Police Corporal Dwight Griffith witnessed a driver commit multiple driving violations, and moved to carry out a routine traffic stop, or so he thought. Things were about to take a very unexpected turn. The Honda SUV comes to a halt, and the trooper prepares to cautiously approach the vehicle. - [Griffith] Corporal Griffith, State Police. The reason I stopped you, you were following two close, driving on the shoulder, and you passed on the shoulder. Any reason for the hurry today? - Do you need anything else? - I need your insurance and registration. - Oh, okay. - [Griffith] Any reason you don't have your seatbelt on? - [Suspect] I took it off as I was getting my wallet out. - I didn't see that. - Oh, that's on you. - [Griffith] I don't believe it is. I need your insurance, also. (traffic whooshing) Is the vehicle insured? - Yes sir. - [Griffith] Is it on your phone? (traffic whooshing) - [Suspect] I'm not gonna give it. - [Griffith] What's the problem today? You don't like to follow the rules? Drive how you want to, and everybody else has to follow them, get outta your way? I smelled the odor of m*******a coming from your vehicle. Before I conduct a probable cause search on your vehicle, is there anything illegal in it? - [Suspect] No, I do not consent to a search on my vehicle. - [Griffith] I'm not asking you for consent. I'm telling you I smell m*******a. - [Suspect] I'm not giving you consent to search nothing. - I'm not asking for consent. - You don't have to. I'm telling you, you don't have consent. - [Griffith] I don't need consent, I've got probable cause. There's a difference. - I understand sir, but- - [Griffith] Obviously you don't understand what probable cause is. - Yes sir. - [Griffith] Probable cause is me watching you pass somebody on the shoulder at an intersection, following too close and not stopping, that's probable cause. - I understand that- - It's probable cause, if you smell m*******a coming from your vehicle. - I don't consent to- - It's not a consent question. - [Suspect] Hang on a second here. Do this again. - [Griffith] Go ahead and step out the car for me. - [Suspect] Hang on, let me get this on record. We'll do this all together. - [Griffith] You can record if you want to, I don't care. Step outta the vehicle. - [Suspect] We're going on record that I'm not consenting. - Step out of the vehicle, that's your option. - [Suspect] No, you can say please sir. I do not- - [Griffith] I'm not asking you please, I'm telling you, step outta your vehicle. - I know my law, I know my rules, and I know that I- - [Griffith] All right, you're under arrest. - [Suspect] You didn't ask me. - [Griffith] Get outta the vehicle, you're under arrest. - For what? - Set your phone down. - [Suspect] Let me call my lawyer right quick. - Set your phone down. - Let me call my lawyer. - I said, set your phone down. - No sir. - Get outta the vehicle. - Calm down. I know you're trying, you can keep trying. - Since the suspect refuses his orders to exit the vehicle, the trooper has no other option but to use force, but it seems he's bitten off more than he can chew, and the situation takes on a dangerous tone. - Why are you grabbing me? - Get outta the vehicle. - Sir, let me call my lawyer. - [Griffith] You people where, you need to get outta the vehicle. - I need to call my lawyer. - You can have your lawyer after you're done. - No, I'm calling my lawyer. - [Griffith] No, you're going to jail is what you're doing. - [Suspect] No sir, you are physically assaulting me. - No I'm not. - Yes you are. - Get outta the vehicle. - Okay. You are physically assaulting me. Sir, you can stop anytime. Sir, you can stop anytime. - Get outta the vehicle. - [Suspect] You can stop anytime, man. I don't respect, but you can stop, I don't respect you, you can stop. - Get outta the vehicle. - No sir, I will not. - [Griffith] Get out, come here. Get outta the vehicle. - Sir I'm gonna, I'm gonna respectfully ask you to cut- - [Bystander] What are you doing, man? What are you fighting for, what's going on? Are you okay? - I'm fine. - [Bystander] Come on bro, get out and do what he tells you. - Turn around. - Sir? - Let's go. - Hold on, sir. - [Bystander] You don't fight an officer. Shut up, you're gonna get in more trouble, bro. - [Suspect] Hang on, hang on. Wow, it's taking big guns to take on this little, you're hilarious. - Get this back up here. - You got him? - Yeah. - That's so cute. I'm a person of interest. Man, you guys are exhausted. - Just let him go there. - You got him? - Yeah. - You got both arms? - [Suspect] That was very soft dude, that's so cute. - You all right? - Yeah. - [Suspect] I don't know, you're breathing hard. - Once the suspect is finally secured in the back of the trooper's cruiser, the good Samaritan who appeared out of nowhere lets his guard down and voices his concerns. - I just saw him fighting. - He's just being an idiot. - [Bystander] Just so you know, the only reason I drew my firearm, I didn't know if he was trying to get a gun on you. When I drove by, I seen him pulled over. I thought maybe he was going for a gun. So that's why I stopped, I got my baby in the truck here. - [Griffith] Let me get your information before you take off, since you stopped to help me. I do appreciate the help, though. - [Bystander] The reason, I want you to know, the reason I drew my firearm- - Appreciate it. - [Bystander] The reason I drew my firearm, I 'cause I couldn't tell what was going on. I just saw him fighting you like crazy. I thought he, I was scared you was gonna get shot or something. I didn't know what he was doing. I saw him fighting you like crazy. - [Griffith] I smelled m*******a in his car, and I told him to get out and he wouldn't do it. - [Bystander] He's probably got a bunch more stuff in there. - Probably does. (device beeping) 19-16. - Go ahead. - 10-19 down here. - 10-4, what's the location? - [Griffith] Between the sewage ponds and Road Runner, right here at the Holiday Inn. - 10-4. (traffic whooshing) - [Bystander] I hope you understand why I drew my firearm. I didn't know if he had a gun. - No. - I seen you clearing the car, and him pulling over on the side. I thought he was grabbing a gun. I was worried about you, man. - [Griffith] No, I appreciate the help. - [Bystander] I thought he was gonna shoot you or something. - I appreciate the help. - No, no. I was a cop for over six years, man. I seen probably enough stuff. I seen him fighting you like crazy, dude. - If not for the passerby, the situation could have ended quite differently.
