A quick check confirmed that the tag had expired, but that wasn't all. The vehicle was also linked to a prior incident on June 14th, and one name kept coming up, Jordan. What started as a simple stop quickly turned into something more. Officers pulled the vehicle into the Dollar Family's parking lot, but Jordan didn't follow their instructions, and that's when things took a wild turn. >> What's up, man? All right. Hey, come here, man. >> Don't do this. Don't do this, guy. I don't Please, sir. Please, SIR. PLEASE, SIR. PLEASE, SIR. PLEASE, SIR. PLEASE, don't do this to me, man. Please. Officer, please. Stay down. >> Let me stay here. Let the paramedics do that. >> Get up. Get up, dude. There's a kid in the car. Jordan, going to up, dude. >> They're going to lift up on your arms. Roll on your side. >> Okay, I'm okay. >> Yeah. >> Car hasn't been searched. I don't know if there's any weapons. >> He's got a bunch of warrants. >> Hey, if you uh still have the handle or the channel, Elrod, you could release it and uh slow anybody else down. >> Jordan was accompanied by his 1-year-old child, who was seated in the back of the vehicle. As the situation developed, additional members of his family arrived at the scene, contributing to a more tense and chaotic environment. >> Well, your tags expired, man. You got a bunch of warrants. So, if you just listen to us, none of this would have happened. >> would have happened, man. >> I was trying to talk to you all. >> Yeah, I bet you were, man. Like, literally, like, I have no way to contact her, man. I'll just probably go get her phone right now. >> So, listen, man. It's all over with, all right? Let's have you take a stand up, okay? All right. Let's go. Swing your feet underneath. Get up. Outside of your mouth, is anything else hurting you? What car is this? 12. Let's keep him away from the crowd. Come on, stand up. You didn't swallow any drugs, did you? It's all over, man. It's all over. One more time on his pockets. All right. Stop it. Ambulance is coming, they'll check you out. You guys all right? >> Yeah. >> During the encounter, one of the officers suffered a serious leg injury and had to step away for medical treatment. Meanwhile, other officers began searching Jordan's vehicle, and what they found would soon tie back to a troubling part of his past. Jordan's grandmother arrived to check on him and his son, but officers said they needed a legal guardian with custody, likely the child's mother, who was at work and unaware of what was unfolding. Otherwise, they warned child services would have to step in. >> What's going [clears throat] on? >> Can I see my grandson? >> Yes, okay. Hold on a minute, we're going to figure out what's going on here before you come over. Hi. Are you his >> Is he okay? >> mom? >> I'm his grandma. >> Okay. He's okay. He's just sitting in his He's just sitting in his car seat. >> Hi. >> He's okay. >> Hi. Why are you sending us in there? Was that the only person in the car? >> I was the >> I'm not sure. I wasn't here first. >> Can I have the baby out? >> Uh not yet. >> We got to figure out what's going on first. >> Well, where's Jordan? >> He's the mother. >> Yeah, I seen him being I thought I seen I was with his mother, but I can't find him. >> I had no idea he was driving. >> So, can I I can try to explain to you what's going on if you'd like. >> Go ahead. >> So, he's got warrants for his arrest. >> Yes. >> Okay. But, um apparently he was arrested. I don't know what happened when he was arrested. So, as far as Is that his kid in the in the back? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, we may for our procedure, we're going to have to take custody of him and then child services is going to have to be involved. Listen Listen. So, I know you're you're grandma, right? >> Right. >> Okay. So, have you taken custody of him before at all like or anything like that or >> No. >> No. Okay. So, >> Okay, but but calm down. Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. Just calm down, Jordan. Calm down. Calm down. >> So, where's his mom Where's the little guy's mother at? >> At work. >> At work? >> Probably at work and we were speaking to >> Do you have her information? >> Um no, I'm getting it from him. >> Okay. Yeah, we can get it from him, too. And if she's got it. >> Who's the mom of the of the child of the child right now? >> Um >> Where Where's mom at? Who Who has custody? >> Probably at She has custody. >> She has custody? >> Yeah. >> Where does she work at? >> All right. I don't know. I have to ask him. >> Okay. >> Jordan, ask. >> Wait, hold on. Hold on. >> Jordan sustained injuries during the struggle, and medical personnel were called in to assess him before the sergeant arrived to question him. >> Could Could we get a uh a number for the the mother of the child? Grandma's here, but we need the mother. Hey Hey, what's your name, man? Jordan, I need you to give the officer a phone number for for your girl who has custody of the child, all right? Where's I'm going to get >> We need to get mom over here. >> mom's number? >> I'm going to get her now. >> I'm sorry, what? >> I'm going to get her right now. >> Okay, where she work at? >> Chili's. >> Okay, great. Okay, that'll be awesome. >> All right. I'm going to go get her. I'm going. I'm going to stay right here at Apple Court. I'm not going nowhere. >> While searching his vehicle, the officers recovered a plastic bag containing a white powdery substance. Field testing later identified it as approximately 2.5 g of A records check showed Jordan had active warrants related to domestic violence, along with a separate felony warrant for possession issued by the Summit County Sheriff's Office. They also confirmed that his driver's license was suspended, further complicating the situation. >> Okay. >> I'm sorry. But, like see if somebody can stay here and talk to me. That's why I feel like this. And nobody listen to me. I've been keeping on crying and crying and crying and crying. >> Listen, listen. If you're going to If you're in cuffs right now, right? Back of the car, right? So, I I'm going to tell you you got the right to remain silent. You know that? All right, I'm going to read you your rights before you start talking and you know, it's just I don't want anything Right? So, you got right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law. You got the right to talk to a lawyer or have him or her present while with you while you're being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you before or during any questioning if you wish. You can decide at any time to exercise these rights and not answer any questions or make any statements. Do you understand all these rights? Listen, I just I I want I'm just I have to I'm reading that to you for your protection, right? So, you know, I don't want you to say anything that'll get you into more trouble or incriminate yourself. I mean, if you want to talk, that's fine, dude, but if you want to talk, I I'm I'm here to I can listen to you. That's That's fine, man, but like I said, I wasn't here for anything. I didn't All I got here you By the time I got here you were on the ground. I don't know I don't know what happened. I wasn't here. >> They make me look like a real bad dad. Yeah. I love my baby, >> All I know is I think you got warrants. I don't even know what for or who or who with. Right? So, I think his mommy's on the way, right? >> I did. >> Like right grandma's Grandma went to go get his mom. We're going to make everything's cool with that. And then she'll be going with mom or he or she What's his What's the baby's name? Yeah. >> This is not right, man. >> Yeah, so baby will be going with mom if mom everything checks out with mom. Mom's got custody, right? Yeah. Okay. >> Ooh, I can't breathe. >> What do you got warrants for? Do you know? I don't know I don't know. Maybe you're not aware. I don't know. Maybe you are. I don't know. I don't know. I was just That's why I was asking you. I didn't look you up at all. These other guys did. I'm sure they know. >> I was saying man Damn man. >> Shortly after a sergeant arrived on the scene and stepped in to question Jordan about what had just unfolded. With tensions still lingering, the conversation that followed would begin to shed light on the situation. >> What's your name man? >> Jordan. >> Jordan? >> Yeah I'm Sergeant Stanner. >> Okay. I'm the officer's supervisor here. I I need to talk to you about No, you can't get out. Stretch your legs. You're fine. Find stretch your legs. Um Can you tell me what happened with the officers? >> They I rolled past them. They was staring at me real >> Okay. >> and I went past my mom's house. She wasn't there. So I came down Copper Road. >> Okay. >> They got behind me somewhere >> Okay. >> cuz I'm pulling in Family Dollar. >> Where did you pull in the Family Dollar at here? >> Right here sir. >> Oh right here you turned okay. >> Yeah I use my blinker there all the time everything. And then they I'm getting out the car to put the get the baby. They came out of nowhere with their blinkers. >> Well did I mean did they did they did they tell you why they stopped you? >> No they still haven't. They got the >> Did you see the officer behind you? >> Yeah I'm like let me talk to you officer. He like get the [ __ ] down. Get the [ __ ] down. >> All right. >> Jordan get the [ __ ] down. I'm like damn they already knew I was and everything. >> Mhm. >> I'm like what the [ __ ] I ain't do nothing. I ain't do nothing. >> Okay. >> They get to beat Be up and everything. I'm like let me talk to you. >> Well did you get on the ground? >> Yeah, I was on the ground. They beat me up on the ground. >> Well, did did you did you listen to them? >> I was trying to listen to them. >> trying to listen to them? >> Yes, I'm like, "Officer, please stop beating my Officer, can I get some breath? I can't breathe. I can't That's what I said. I can't breathe. I can't breathe." >> Okay. >> Like, I'm trying to think what I was saying. They had me so fast, like >> And then, did you did you put your hands behind your back? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. Well, uh >> And that's when they put me in cuffs. >> Okay. >> And I asked them, "Can I loosen them?" They weren't even listening to me or anything. >> Okay. Um what else happened? Did the did did they strike you? >> Yes, sir. >> They did? How many How many times did you feel whoever hit you, one of the officers? Do you know which one it was? >> Which one it was? >> I'm sorry, what? >> They kept beating me. >> Okay. >> striking me. >> Well, the officers have body cams, so I mean, we'll we'll see how many how how many times it is and stuff. >> know. >> So, did but the officers were yelling at you to put your hands behind your back, weren't they? >> They were yelling a lot of stuff, man. Like, I don't know. I didn't Like, when they told me to put my hands behind my back, I put them behind my back. >> So, do you think it was wise of you to jump out of the car and do that with officers or what, man? >> No, no, sir. I was just going into the store. I didn't think that they was about to go all that. I really didn't, officer. I I thought that they was just about to do >> Well, Jordan, look. Let me ask you something. What Why didn't you just put your hands up and say >> what was going on. I didn't know they was coming after me, like >> Well, they they were right in front of you talking to you, man. What do you mean that you didn't know? >> Yeah, that's what I mean. >> You could have been like, "Hey, okay. Okay. Hi." You could You could have put your hands up and said, "No problem." What's that? >> scared. >> You were scared? >> Yes, sir. >> Um do you have warrants or something or or what? Or do you have Do you have a suspended license or what's the deal? Like, well, why were you scared? There's no reason to be scared. >> Cuz they were beating me up. I was just >> No, this was before. You said you were scared before that happened. You were out of the car >> I just seen them on the over here on the day and now they right behind me when I'm at the start of the light. >> Well, well, well, when officers approach you, they're obviously approaching you and and and and you start questioning them, you know, and you don't listen to them, they're they're I'm they're they're trying to get their hands behind your back, man. >> Hey, you know, officer, I didn't run no lights or or not like break no laws. >> Okay. That's what I was trying to see what the Well, the the the reason they stopped you is because they ran your plate. The the vehicle came they told you that come back come back as stolen unauthorized use of that vehicle, okay? Yeah, like an unauthorized use of that vehicle and it was showing you have warrants. >> It was showing stolen and unauthorized >> Yeah, like an unauthorized use that that you used the vehicle beyond the consent of the owner. >> It's in my mom's name. >> Uh-huh. I don't know. >> right there. >> Okay, well, we'll figure that out, but they also knew you had warrants, too. That's how they knew Dude, listen to >> the car was stolen and >> well, no, unauthorized use of that but that it's possibly taken on unauthorized use, okay? And then they knew you had warrants. They knew who you were. Cuz officers know know know who's over here. >> I'll be over here. My mom just moved over here. >> Well, they knew you, man. >> And I'm just like when I was 18, that's what I'm saying. I ain't seen them >> Well, well, they knew you had warrants, man. >> I That's scary. That's what I'm saying. That's scary I didn't cuz I didn't do nothing like that. >> Well, you got warrants. You may have not done anything. >> I just take care of my family. I stay I do whatever they need me to do. >> Okay, well, unfortunately, the warrants finally caught up with you today and the officer saw you that you had warrants and unfortunately all this happened because of that. So, this is kind of where we're at, right? >> I just I just want help to get it over with. >> Okay, well, well, yeah, and I under- and I understand that. It's a but when when the police approach you and I know it's a little scary sometimes because, you know, we wear we're those uniforms and stuff, but also officers are going to come up to you and and you start being like, "Whoa, get away from me." instead of putting your hands up say, "I'm sorry." or whatever, then then then they would just grab you you put your hands behind your back. You comply with them. And then you get cuffed, okay? Well, Jordan, listen to me, man. They No, they ain't going to kill you. It's fine, man. Throwing you on the ground, it's you know what, man? You Well, let's be honest here. Probably should have just listened, right? And And I understand you were scared, and that's fair. Okay, it's fair. Um but the bottom line is the officer you should just listen and put your hands behind your back, and your kids in the car. It would have been fine, right? You probably wouldn't have been slammed on the ground. This parking lot is all crappy, you know. You You might also just get scraped up and stuff and try trying to get you in custody and all that stuff, but Here's the deal, man. Uh you know, the the game is you got warrants. You got to take care of them. You didn't take care of them, and they saw you, all right, man? Okay. Well, fair enough. As long as the warrants Well, man, let this be a lesson, so okay, man? So, hopefully your warrants you you're going to get some charges, unfortunately. I don't know what charges. They found some drugs in the car. Um so uh that's another issue, man. So, it sounds like you you need to start making some better decisions here, Jordan. You understand what I'm saying? >> Yes, sir. >> So, all right, man. Understand? >> I do. I do. >> But But But if you want help, but you have to be willing to do you have to take action with this. You understand? >> Yes, sir. I understand. I really like And there is like it's horrible. Like I be I can't move and everything. Like I can't >> You can't what? >> I can't move. I'll be in the bed. They be picking with me in my bed and >> Who Who's picking with you in the >> My bed. When I be in jail, that's what I'm saying. That's why I'm so scared. Like it's just a lot. And then like cuz my brother like man >> Well, if you stay out of trouble, man, you won't have to worry about going to jail. Once these warrants are taken care of, you go to court and stuff, try to stay out of trouble. >> trying. That's what I did, and they just >> Well, you got to stay away from the man. You can't have in your car with your 5-year-old kid. You understand what I'm saying? If you don't have then, you know, you get stopped, whatever. And if you have warrants, if they're misdemeanors, you may be able to get a summons. In this case, you don't have a summons, but you need to go to court and get this taken care of because >> Like what happened to the days where they actually like pulled you over woop woop and you pulled over like they just they just hopped out the car and got to the >> That's what we do, man. We're the police. >> I know, but I wasn't doing nothing. >> You got warrants, man. Yeah, dude, you got warrants. That's the game. You know the game. How old are you, man? >> I'm 32, but I ain't never been to prison. I'm just saying. >> You've never been to prison? Been to jail? Have you been to jail? But no prison? All right, man. Well, All right. Well, hopefully you don't get any prison time. You know, you got some drugs in the car and that's another issue. You know, it's a felony, so I don't know. You may go to prison, you may not go to prison, but at some point you have to take accountability and say, "Okay, hey listen, I'm making some decisions here, you know, and stuff and you know, I I have a son. Is it Is it a son or daughter?" Son is is important to me. I I need to make some better decisions. So, All right. All right. Good. You're feeling Jordan, all right, man? Good luck to you and you'll be on your way soon, okay? All right. >> According to the officers, running the license plate wasn't the only reason for the stop. They noted that Jordan was driving through a high crime area in West Akron and briefly entered the oncoming traffic lane, something they considered a potential indicator of unlawful behavior. They also observed that as he passed the cruiser, he turned his head away. Taken together, these observations raised enough concern for the officers to run his plates. >> This is my This is his mother. >> Okay. The baby's mother or his mother? >> His mother. >> Okay. >> My mom is My mom is at the job with the the baby's mom. She said she been sitting there for like 10 minutes waiting on her to come outside. It's like, come on. They got their baby running around like stupid. And then the baby This is their uh her nephew. >> That's That's his mom. >> Is mom here? >> Yeah, she was here with her baby. >> So, this is his phone broke. He said he wants you to stay with him probably. Let me ask him if he can call his stuff to go with you. And you I need I need your information. >> It can stay here. >> Baby's Baby's stuff he wants to go with the baby he's obviously he's okay with that. So, >> They're not baby mom. >> Right. >> The mom about to come. >> This is grandma. This is his mom. He's sitting back there in the principal's office. >> Yeah. This is my daughter. >> All right. Can't you take the head off? >> All right. I I just need you guys to go stand outside while I call the mom. >> Oh, okay. Yeah. You need this one, too? >> Yeah, just go ahead leave it right there. So, the rest of the baby stuff can go with the mother. >> You want us to get out of the car? Oh, this is terrible. That's what I was telling my mom. I was like, "Mom, I don't want to go to jail." >> I'm messing All that stuff's got to go with mom. >> That's fine. >> Yeah, cuz she's going to want to take in the baby, so. >> I know. I wasn't going nowhere. >> I know, but like I don't want to get misplaced, so. >> I don't know if you're talking. Uh where did the baby go? >> He's over there. >> He's over there taking the head off. Mama out of two weeks to get released. Mama Mama out of two weeks. >> Yeah, Mama Yeah, I just talked to her. >> I just talked to her she going to get released. >> She said she out there and Cleo ain't coming out. Like what what You know what that's a that's her son and everybody playing games. You know what I'm saying? >> We ask her to like go in go in there and try to find her, I mean >> Let me call her back, okay? >> Yeah, you know. >> Cuz cuz first of all, I'm like my My is like almost 80 years old. It's not fair to my mom none of this. My mom not her mom. You know what I mean? >> Right. >> This is not fair to my mother to be having to go through all of this mess. >> No, no. Absolutely not. >> This is my mom's daughter is right here, us two. She's like nothing to me. >> I just talked to your mama on the phone waiting for you. >> Yeah, but tell Yeah, tell her that the police is right right here. We Or call her call somebody's phone so they can talk to her so tell them what to do here. >> I think grandma is like seeing this is my family. You know y'all my family, isn't it? Anyways. >> Uh what's up, man? >> Scott. >> Yeah. Listen, you guys you got to No, you got to keep them moving, dude. Please. >> Is that Hey, is it Okay, is it? >> I know I just want to deal with my people. >> Okay. Well >> I I know I don't I just want to see them. >> Do you recognize these people? >> I will. >> Okay. You will? >> I Yeah, I will. >> Okay. Sure. >> I mean, y'all look out for y'alls, can't I look out for mine? >> Sure, man. Please. >> Can I have a cigarette? >> I don't I don't know. I'm not at the moment. Oh, can you? Hey, what I got here? >> Yeah, that's fine. You already got one going here. >> Good morning. >> You can take a hit, but you ain't have to be smoking in the car, dude. You know what I mean? >> All right. Oh, yeah, we good. Thank you. >> Just think optimistically. >> Yeah, we're going to stick up our car. Appreciate that. >> I got you. >> Apparently we're waiting. I don't know. I want to go get her stuff. This property cuz I know you just showed up. Apparently we're waiting on mom talking for a while. So they can get this show on the road, so. And I got chocolate out when I asked for the ticket. When I asked when I get you and I got chocolate out. Okay. Whatever. >> Why are they towing the car? I don't understand. >> What's that? Sorry. >> Why are they towing the car? That's my car. That's not a stolen vehicle. >> Okay. Well, you because you was arrested and we get the car just towed when he was arrested. >> Any other time he's got arrested they called me to drive it home. >> Did you tell anybody else that you drive? >> I just turned I just turned around and this it was just in here a minute ago. >> If you want to let the officers in that car know that it is your car, see what they say. They're in charge. >> Armas, you can go ahead and step out. However, an Akron Municipal Court jury found him not guilty of resisting arrest. Though he did plead guilty to possession of related substances. A tow company was later called to remove his vehicle from the scene. Not long after, Jordan filed a federal lawsuit in the Northern District of Ohio, alleging excessive force, assault, battery, and negligence during the arrest. The city of Akron settled the lawsuit for about $15,000. He was cleared of the criminal charge, and received a financial settlement from the city without any admission of wrongdoing from officials.
