- Shoplifting is a type of crime that can oddly provoke feelings of empathy for the hungry and homeless. - But today, Detective Dale will take us through five cases where entitled shoplifters think they deserve freebies without consequences. - If I had to give shoplifters any advice based on my experience as a cop, it would be to get their asthma treated and practice running every morning. Or just simply not commit a crime. - [Officer] Get on the ground! Get on the ground! Roll on your back, now! - If you think this is weird advice, meet Demetrius Brenson, a walking example of what not to do if you have health problems. - [Officer] Just breathe. - I can't, I got asthma. - [Officer] Just breathe. - Police received a report on regarding an individual trespassing in a grocery store in Georgia. Upon arrival, they were met with a regular looking man who would soon prove just how dangerous he was. - [Officer] It's not crazy, you're trying to steal. You're lucky you're not going to jail. - Yes, sir, yes, sir, yes, sir. - [Officer] How is that crazy? - No, sir, it's not crazy. - [Officer] 7-14, name check for name and date of birth. David Roundtree, 5/19/88. Come here, I'm not done. - I'm not going nowhere, sir. I'm not going nowhere. That man's trying to come back here though. - Hmm? - That man trying to get by. This is crazy, man. So she called, the lady called on me? - Earlier. - No, I'm talking about- - [Officer] stay right here. - Sir, I didn't do nothing. I didn't do nothing. I didn't do nothing. I didn't do nothing. - [Officer] Don't hit me. - [Demetrius] I'm not gonna hit you. I didn't do nothing, though. Let go! - [Officer] 10-80, we just fought outside of the store. He is headed towards Magnolia. He tried to take my TASER. - Are you okay? - Yeah. He ran towards Magnolia. Somewhere behind the store. Black male, no shirt. It looks like he ran that way. No shirt, Black male, tan shorts. - [Officer] You got your TASER? - [Officer] He got it. He pointed it at me. When I came up- - He got your TASER? - [Officer] Yeah. He came out this way. - This alley and went left? - [Officer] That's what it looked like. I bent over to pick up my TASER, when I came up, I didn't have him. - Where'd he go? - [Officer] Right here. Right here, this general area. I walked up to there. I walked up to right there and I stopped once I heard you on the radio. His shirt and everything is back here in front of the store. - So he is shirtless now? - Yeah. - Just shorts? - [Officer] Yep. We are on the alleyway behind Family Dollar, tracking. Jackson's on the ground. - [Officer] All right, stay right there. Stay, stop, dog. Hey, which way did you come from? You just come from the front of the house this way? Did you just walk from the front of the house this way? - [Resident] No. I know there's a pathway through here. So I was just coming this way. - [Officer] Yeah, I'm saying did you come from that side of the house, though? Like you walked that way coming towards me? I don't want my dog to track you if you're not the one I'm looking for. - [Resident] So you want me to go where? - [Officer] No, stay right there. Tell me which direction you were coming from? - [Officer] Were you walking this way, sir? - [Resident] I was going that way to go home, but- - [Officer] Cool, just stay right there. Just for a second and then you're good to go. Hey. You're good. He saw him. Did you just have someone run through your yard? You just have somebody run through your yard? - No, I just came. - [Officer] Okay. You guys have somebody run through your yard? - Huh? - You guys have somebody run through your yard? - [Resident] Without a shirt on? - Yep. He went which way? He went that way? Because he's picking up all this foot traffic. - [Officer] Supposedly from what this lady said, he's a regular. Yeah. - The police searched the area around the store to find Demetrius, even in the most unlikely hiding spots. - [Officer] They can identify him on the video. Hey, they've got him on camera at the store. - If you could have the clerk to look at it and see if they recognize the person. - [Officer] Oh no, they don't recognize him. - [Officer] Dallas County Sheriff's Office. - [Officer] Police department. - [Officer] You want to clear the room or you want me to- - Right here? - Yep. - Clear it. Dallas County SO! - [Officer] A very small little- - [Officer] Yeah, without a ladder. I ain't gonna try to risk going up there. - Okay. - See if y'all can lift me up there, that's one thing. But if I get up there and I'm by myself and there's an issue, there's an issue. - Do you want to go up there? - We get you up there. - [Officer] We're just gonna lift you up there. But hey, look for beams. Once you get up there you can walk the beams. I think there may be a partial floor up here. - [Officer] I don't know which way is gonna be the easiest. - Turn back this way. And that way you've got this corner right here. - Yep. - Where you got both sides. All right. - [Officer] that's gonna be fun. - Here. - Yeah, bend your knees. - Put this light on your head. - We're good. - All right, let's go. - [Officer] Only one of y'all had me. Feet, feet, feet, grab my feet. - [Officer] We got you. - [Officer] Wait, wait. Hold up, my belt's stuck. - [Officer] Look for beams now. Don't fall through. - [Officer] Just shine your light across there. You should be able to see across. - [Officer] Yeah, there's no disturbance in the dust up here. - [Officer] Okay. - [Officer] But, I mean, there is now. He ain't gonna be able to get through to get to the other side. It's like partially walled off. - Okay. - Okay, that's fine. You can come on down, then. - [Officer] The way y'all's attics are separated, if I can't fit through it, I don't think anybody can fit through it, because I'm the smallest. - [Officer] There he is. Get on the ground! Get on the ground! Roll on your back now! Roll over! - [Officer] Move. 10-95. Sit him up. - Sit him up. Some leg irons. - [Officer] Stay, don't move. Just blink. - [Demetrius] I can't breathe. - Get him a rag and cover him up, please. - [Officer] What's wrong, baby? You okay? Does she know him or she just panicking? - He just ran toward her. - [Officer] Okay, okay. Calm down, baby. It's okay, it's okay. (resident hyperventilating) She have panic attacks or asthma? - Huh? - Does she have asthma or panic attacks? - Yeah. - [Officer] Do you need for an ambulance to come check her out? - Probably, yeah. - [Officer] There's no use in doing, no, we're not. Just breathe. - I can't breathe, I got asthma. - Just breathe. Put your foot out right here. - [Officer] We possibly have an asthma attack. - [Officer] Hey, man, what's your name? - [Officer] We're not letting you down. - [Demetrius] I need to lay down. - [Officer] No, no, you got to sit up. We don't want you laying on your back, all right? We're trained to sit you up, okay? - [Officer] Hey, Barrett, we gonna take some photos of the back real quick. - All right. - I'm just holding you up real quick. - It's bad? - I can't breathe, sir. - [Officer] Oh, well, we got EMS coming. You need to sit up. - [Officer] Sit up, dude. - Come on. - You need to sit up. - [Officer] Keep your legs still. - Water in my face, please. - [Officer] We're working on getting water. We got EMS on the way. - [Officer] All right, stop, stop moving, stop moving. - [Officer] Hey, you gotta sit up so you can drink. - [Officer] Sit up, lift your head up. Lift your head up. See, that's what I'm talking about, all right? Come on, sir. Come on, sir. There we go. Sir, you need to calm down. Try to take deep breaths. - [Officer] You want some water on your head? - All right, put a little bit on his head. Help cool him off some. - I didn't know what- - [Officer] Come on, come on. You gotta calm down. Gotta control your breathing, okay? - I cant. - Just relax, man. - I got bad asthma. - [Officer] I got you. - [Officer] We're gonna take care of you. - I'm dizzy. - [Officer] Stay seated, stay seated. Stay seated. Come on. - [Officer] It's better for you to be in this opposition than laying on your back. That's why we have you like this, okay? - [Officer] Here you go, there you go. Here, I'm gonna pour some on your chest, cool you down. Okay, pour some on your head again. All right, cool you down. You'll be all right. Take a swig. - I can't feel my legs, y'all. - [Officer] Stop moving. - I can't feel my legs. - [Officer] I got you, I got you. - Call my mama. - Demetrius possibly had asthma, and running in the heat had caused further dehydration for which he needed EMS. This guy is clearly not cut out for a life of crime. - You want some more water? - I got some more water here. Come on. There you go, calm down. Just calm down. - Breathe through- - Control your breathing. - [Officer] Nice and slow. - You're doing good, we got EMS coming, okay? - [Officer] Yeah, there was a third probe. - [Officer] You see where I'm pointing my finger? - Yep. - You see it? - [Demetrius] Yep. - [Officer] Try slowing your breathing down a little bit more, okay? The faster you breathe, the more your chest is gonna hurt. - [Officer] That's right, slow it down, sir. Want some more water? - I can't breathe. - Can I pour it down your head? What do you want me to do? - I can't breathe. - All right, sir. I understand, just sit up straight. Just control it, slow it down, slow your breathing down. Okay? All right. - Get him up and get him to a car. - Okay. - We're gonna get you in the AC, okay? That's gonna help, all right? But we gotta have you help us. - Water. - Water? - [Officer] Hold on, it's coming. - Here we go, more water for you. - [Officer] Gotta get your feet under you, okay? - Stand up. - Alright, come on now, sir. - Come on. - Handcuffs. Help me, please. (Demetrius exclaiming) - [Officer] Wanna wait for EMS and get their stretcher? - [Officer] Just go ahead and pick up his legs and carry him to the ambulance. - Hold on, baby, we gotta switch if you won't walk. We gotta pick your legs up and carry you, okay? - [Officer] Hold up, EMS is here. - [Officer] 10-12, 10-12. Sir, I need a yes or no. Drink some water or no? All right. All right, I'm gonna take that as a no sir, all right? Because you want some water or no? (all talking indistinctly) You're driving Keane's car? - Yep. - Okay. - We need to set you up and let you adjust your arms. Let me get this blood pressure right. We'll help kind of get you up so you can get your arms better, where you're sitting a little better, all right? What's your first name? - What's your first name? Please don't make this harder than it has to be. What's your first name? - Ma'am- - Okay. Your chest, but what's your name? - I can't breathe. - Yeah. - What is your name? - Me. - Me? - What's your first name? - Me. - Ameed? - Demetrius. - Demetrius. - Demetrius. - There we go. - All right. - What's your last name? - Round- - Roundtree? - No, ma'am. - What's your name? - Brenson. Ma'am- - Demetrius Preston? - My chest, please. - All right, we're gonna sit you up and let you move your arms. - All right, let's help get you a little bit better situated. - All right. - Hospital. - That's where we're going. - Hospital. - No, we're not going to the hospital. - [Officer] What did he say, Preston? - Demetrius Preston? - Brenson. - Branson? - Brenson. - Brenson? - Demetrius Brenson? B-R-E-N-S-O-N? - [Officer] You run a locals check on a Demetrius Brenson. - [Paramedic] We're going to pick you up, all right? And let you adjust your arms a little bit, all right? - A quick background check showed that this wasn't Demetrius' first rodeo, but he clearly hadn't mastered his craft. Even after lying down in the AC and getting plenty of water, Demetrius could barely form a sentence. - [Officer] You'll get water when the doctor says you can have water. - I can't feel my one side. - [Officer] You're getting ready to head into the room on that bed in there, man. Once you're in there, you can lay on your side if you want to. As long as you keep your head up, all right? - Can I lay on one side? - [Officer] Yeah, you can lay on your side in there. That's fine. - Hang on until we get you off this bed because it ain't very wide. - Did he say anything to you? - [Officer] Yeah. - [Officer] I mean he's in plain clothes. Didn't recognize him for a second. - [Officer] What are you talking about? - [Officer] One of the corporals from the jail, he's in there with his kid. - For myself, you know, I've been here long enough and most of the nurses recognize me at least, even if they don't know who I am, they'll recognize me. Oh, I'm sick, I'm a big old baby. And they'll come in and they're just completely mean to me every time. Like, there's no sympathy whatsoever. - [Officer] Mr. Brenson, are you left-handed or right-handed. Left? - Right. - [Officer] You're right? - Please. - I gotta take these off. - All right, you lay back down. (Demetrius mumbling) - Please help me. - [Officer] Put your arm down. (Demetrius mumbling) I'll do it just a little bit, man. But, I mean, I can see light coming through. You got room. - [Nurse] I'm gonna get some blood, okay? - No. - Yep. You're complaining of chest pain, we gotta make sure your heart's okay. - While he did seem better the next day, I sure hope he'll consider a career switch for his own health. (handcuffs clicking) - [Officer] 30 minutes ago. And I was told to come up here and I just got here. - Call security. - Hmm? - [Officer] I want to get outta here. - [Officer] Ask one of them can I get security to escort you down, also, have they told you on the update for him? - They're looking at his ultrasound. They checked his heart and his legs, because he has a clot, a bullet clot. - [Officer] You still got 'em on your leg? That's your freaking leg. You can't sit up in the bed right there? - How I'm going to sit up? I can sit up all day, but how? They done took these off and I done went down. They took them off and had me turn around and pee. I'm not trying to do nothing, though. - [Officer] Every time somebody said that they tried to do something. I'm not saying you're going to. - I'm tired, bro. Like my body can't do s**t. I got scars and cuts from my waist all way to my- - [Officer] So you're saying you're not able to sit up, move- - I got this. - Okay. - [Officer] My answer's not going to change. - Demetrius was charged with aggravated assault against a peace officer. Removal of a weapon from a public official, and obstruction of law enforcement officers. While Demetrius had the dignity to at least stop and pretend to have a chat with the police officer initially, our next suspect runs for it. The only problem is she sucks. - They had me running from him and I didn't even do what they said that I did. - Some shoplifting suspects are so dumb, they don't need a police officer to arrest them. They'll walk right into the clutches of the law, or like our next suspect, trip and tumble into the cuffs. - [Suspect] wait, my phone. Hold on, wait. officers were called to a local mall in Florida to investigate a woman suspected of stealing items from a Coach outlet. When the police found her hiding in a store, she did something that would confirm she was no window shopper. - [Officer] Copy. Come here. Don't buck. Over there. - Why? - [Officer] Come here. - Stop! - [Suspect] Don't you touch me! (bystander laughing) I need my phone. My shoulder. Please don't hurt me. Wait, my phone! Hold on, wait. I dropped my teeth. - [Officer] All right, stop resisting. You got three of us here, all right? All right. - Wait, my teeth. - [Officer] Here. - [Officer] Hey, I'm taking this out of her hand 'cause it keeps ringing. - Shouldn't have ran, huh? I need to phone my mom. - [Officer] Nope, we're not doing that, all right? I will bend this back if we have to. - My mom. - Here we go. Hang on that 'cause I don't want her. What did she drop? - [Officer] I didn't see her drop her phone. - [Suspect] My mon, I need to call my mom, please. - [Officer] Absolutely. - [Suspect] Please don't take me. I didn't do nothing, man. I just trying to contact, see what's going on. I called the police myself just now. - Did you? - Yes, sir. - [Officer] Oh. - That's what I'm saying. That's what I thought Charles was trying to complain to me for what I just did. I just got off the phone with him and I told him that I didn't do anything. Sir, can you please answer for me? Can you please answer for me? Sir, please? (cell phone ringing) - [Officer] We're gonna have a long time to talk. - I don't try to talk because I was trying to with the police. So that's why I thought when you running after me, I thought that y'all was trying to blame me for what's going on and I didn't do anything. - [Officer] I got you. - That's what I'm saying. Can I please call the police, sir. Please, sir, please? - [Officer] Okay, step down, watch your head. - [Officer] Let's get this off. - I don't mind getting it off. Can you please call her, please? I just smashed my mouth. - [Officer] Yeah, that was quite the spill you took. - [Officer] All the way. The seat don't go very low. It's not gonna go well if you don't work with me. Back up. - [Suspect] Sheriff, it hurts. - I appreciate your help. - Anything? - [Officer] Nope, thank you. - [Suspect] I'm talking to you, sir. - [Officer] I'm listening. - [Suspect] I just got off the phone with them. I called you, verify it. What was going on. So I'm just trying to figure out why was you running after me? That's why I didn't understand. - [Officer] I didn't really run after you. - [Suspect] Huh? - [Officer] I didn't really run after you. - [Suspect] You did, you said you was looking for me. That's what I'm trying to tell to you, sir. - The officer had some great news for our suspect. I would say this was her lucky day. But the woman did suffer some injuries after slamming her head into the pole. - [Officer] I have great news and less than great news. The good news is the business about the Coach store is straightened out for now, and you're not in trouble for that. - [Suspect] What's the bad news? - [Officer] The bad news is you're going to jail for RA. - [Suspect] What's that? - [Officer] It's what they call when the cops are trying to talk to you and they have a reason to contact- - [Suspect] I don't wanna get in trouble for that, though. - [Officer] You shouldn't have take off running - [Suspect] Because I didn't understand what was going on. - [Officer] Come on out of there. This is Officer Torres. - They had me running from him and I didn't even do what they said that I did. - [Officer] Can you turn around and face the car for me? Please. - Face the car for me, please. - She runs into metal pole. Blows out her tooth, her tooth is gone. And knocks herself out just for like a second or two. And had she just stopped and talked to me, the girl didn't want to come do an ID, so she would've been cut loose. So there's no IDs at the Coach store. If you got a girl over here or a guy, "Hey, come look, ID this guy." Uh-uh, nope, corporate policy. - [Officer] Ah, so now you got this resisting arrest? - It'll be a felony. - [Officer] Oh, yeah, yeah. Yep. - She doesn't like that. - The officer was kind enough to even consider cutting her loose. Prepare to be shocked by what this entitled woman did the next day. - Yesterday my cousin was at work, she on the phone. But she can't talk like that. Messed up and her neck is messed up. - [Officer] Okay, so? - She can explain to you exactly what happened. - [Suspect] He approached me there by Under Armor. He approached me and said that I was being detained. And I asked him why was I being detained and he was telling me that it was because of ongoing investigation. So I told him I already had called to verify myself. So I told him I don't have to speak to you. I walked out. I walked off really fast. He was coming behind me. Me talking to him and me walking, I also hit a pole. But instead of me hitting the pole, I tripped and fell. And when I fell, he slammed me on the ground and detained me. But when he slammed me, he busted my whole mouth open and two front teeth came out my mouth. - [Officer] Okay. - You can flip through the pictures. - [Officer] Well, fill out that. - Like this? - Yeah. That's if you're gonna file a formal complaint and I'll give it to his day-shift lieutenant, because I'm the night-shift lieutenant, and then either they'll call you or someone from Internal Affairs will call you. - Okay. - All right? - Okay. I'll finish filling it out. - [Officer] Okay. Okay. So, I went in the back to look at the Axon cameras, because we all wear body cameras. So it looks like when he got to the Dunkin' Donuts, she had left. So as he was walking around the outlet, there were some customers, there was actually some off-duty police officers. They don't work for us, just random off-duty. Was like, "Are you looking for somebody?" And he said "Yes." They told him what store she went in. She was hiding behind a display. So, he came from behind the display. He was like, "Hey, don't run, where you going?" You know, "Don't run." She takes off running. When she takes off running, she's looking back at him and she runs into a pole. That's what knocks her teeth out. And then she runs into the post, she falls, she gets up, she grabs her phone, and that's when he handcuffs her. So he never throws her to the ground. - If this isn't enough proof that some suspects dig holes for themselves, wait till you meet our next suspect, Randall. He practically confesses to a crime while shouting, "I didn't do anything." - [Officer] Sir, we'd like you to calm down. - [Randall] Get those cuffs off me right now! - You're under arrest. - No I'm not. - [Officer] Stop resisting. - [Randall] Get these cuffs off me! - Randall is a PS5 thief with an odd fashion sense. Call me a boomer, but this guy's style screams "I shoplift for fun." - [Randall] You act like 'cause you're a cop and a woman, you got a badge and you're better than me. - [Officer] Hey, come on, buddy. - [Randall] Can you help me up, please? deputies responded to an armed robbery call at a GameStop in South Hill, Washington. - [Officer] County, 72. Can we go with that description one more time? - [Radio] White male, gray hair, face tattoo, black hoodie, gold chain. - [Officer] Proceeding. All right, hold on one second. The victim's next door. - Is he next door? - Yeah, he's right here. - I'm sure you guys already know about the break in last night. - Oh, this was like this? - Yeah, so this was already like this. - [Officer] This was last night? - Yeah, someone drove through last night. - Did he have a black backpack? - He might have. - He was walking down that way then. - Yeah. - What did he take? - He made me open up the back. He told me he had a gun and he took a whole bunch of PS5s, Switch controllers. - [Officer] So he took PS5s? Like, multiple of them? - Yeah. - [Officer] I mean, he would've been- - He had a backpack. I don't know if they're in his backpack. - [Officer] How many PS5s? - [Victim] A couple, two PS5s and- - [Officer] Okay. - [Victim] A whole bunch of controllers. - [Officer] All right, we'll be back. - Red hoodie, right? - [Officer] That's a lot of stuff, yeah. - Randall was on the run. And to locate him, the officers sought help from a K9, who found the stolen stuff dumped in the back of the shop, but there was no trace of the suspect. - [Officer] Dog's indicating he may have possibly jumped the fence, near 9-9-1 140th Street. - So, they came over the fence? - [Officer] This is 9-9-1-1. So 2-7 would be just that way. - [Officer] Where? - [Officer] You wanna walk down that way? You want me to see if there's a access point this way? - Yeah. - I think it's not too much further because there's the end of the field right there. It should be. - [Officer] Is that locked? - [Officer] I might have a key to that one. - [Officer] Oh, man. Call you "the locksmith." - [Officer] That was easy because it wasn't locked. Okay, the dog's coming out to 140th Street East. (gravel crunching) (dog panting) - [Officer] We would've seen him from here. - [Officer] Yeah. - [Officer] He was right around here. - [Officer] Yeah, he got hung up. (dog panting) (objects clattering) - [Officer] Show me your hands! Come out! Show me your hands! - [Officer] Let me see your hands! (dog barking) - [Officer] You're gonna get bit. (officers speaking indistinctly) You're gonna get bit! (objects clattering) - [Officer] You're under arrest. - [Randall] For what? Why am I under arrest? - [Officer] Turn around! - [Randall] Ow, what the, dude? Why am I under arrest. I didn't even do anything. - Oh, you did something. - No, I didn't do anything. - [Officer] You sure did. - [Officer] Good boy, good boy! - Our suspect dug himself a deeper hole by claiming the actual thief was just loitering on the streets, though the police hadn't even mentioned what he was being arrested for. - [Officer] You live here? - [Randall] No, the dude that stole the is running down the road right now, bro. - [Police officer] Who said anything about stealing s**t? The kid tried throwing all the over the fence, bro. Ow, dude, what the, man? This is. You guys don't got me on camera doing anything. - [Officer] It's okay. How do you know that? - [Randall] I know you don't because I didn't steal anything. Get these cuffs off! Is that what we're doing? You're assaulting me. Get these cuffs off me! - [Officer] Sir, we'd like you to calm down. - [Randall] Get these cuffs off me right now. - [Officer] You're under arrest. - [Randall] No, I'm not. - [Officer] Stop resisting. - [Randall] Get these mother cuffs off me. You just busted my face open and my knees open, your piece of. Ah! You guys see this s**t? They're assaulting me. Ow, get these cuffs off me! You just broke my hand you piece of. You broke my hand. Did you hear me? - [Officer] Yeah, you're screaming and I'm stood right here. - [Randall] Get the off me! Take 10 of you to take me down? Get these mother cuff off me, dude. My hand's broken, bro. - Huh? - Stop, you broke my hand. I can't get up like that. Stop, I'm serious. - [Officer] You're not really cooperating with me. - [Randall] I will if you undo the things off my feet, please. - We're past that. - No, we're past that, man. - [Randall] I promise you I'll get up politely. I promise. - Nope. - [Officer] Do I need to wrap it around again? - [Randall] Dude, please. You broke my hand, dog. I'm serious, I'm serious. I'll act polite if you undo this, please. My hand's broken, dog. - [Officer] We're gonna go back to the scene. - [Randall] I never did anything, man. I fell asleep in the shed, dude. - [Officer] Can we just go? - [Randall] I'm homeless, dog. I'm tired. - [Officer] Gonna uncross his feet. There we go. Oh, there we go. That's the step. - [Randall] Every time I fall asleep somewhere else people spill all my, dude. - [Officer] That doesn't mean you have to act like this. - [Randall] Sorry, dude. I was not, dude. You slammed me on the pavement. Me first, dog. (sobbing) My hand's broken. I'll get up if you undo these on my feet, politely. I promise you. I put that on everything I love. I promise. I swear to God, dude. I'm not joking. I'm not gonna run. - [Officer] One shot, we'll give you a shot. - [Randall] One shot, please. - [Officer] One shot. (officers speaking indistinctly) We can leave those on. (Randall sobbing) - [Officer] Roll on your side. Stand up. One, two, three. One more chance. Stand up, stand up, stand up. - [Randall] I'm trying, my feet are together, bro. - [Officer] Hop like a bunny. - [Randall] I can't, my knees are crushed up. (Randall sobbing) I can't believe you did that to me. - His attitude deteriorated at the same speed at which his pants dropped. But that didn't stop him from taking his frustration out on the cops - [Officer] You're going to jail for robbery in the first and kidnapping. - [Randall] I never robbed nobody or kidnapped anybody. - [Officer] You just kicked my window. - Take these handcuffs off. They're too tight, they're hurting my hands, bro. - [Officer] So we start screaming and kicking? - I asked you to help me, and you said, "no." - You screamed at me. - No, lady. I asked you to help me, and you slammed the door in my face like I'm a. That's what you did. I asked you politely. - No, you didn't. - The I did. Don't try to play tough now because I did. - You're going back in the hog. - I asked you nicely. - [Officer] You already tried to kick out my window. You're going back in the hog. - No, I asked you nicely, lady. - [Officer] Put your feet back in the car. - Put your feet in there. - Will you undo these cuffs a little bit, please? - [Officer] No. - Undoing the seatbelt. - [Officer] You're getting out of the car. Get out of the car. - [Officer] Back on the ground again. - Don't. - On your knees! - [Randall] I'm trying, dude. These cuffs are too tight, bro. - Straighten your legs. - Straighten- - I told you, you've got the cuffs on too tight. What the? Dude, undo these cuffs. - [Officer] No. - [Randall] They're cutting my circulation off, dude. You guys see this? This is police brutality. I just want the cuffs undone a little bit, that's all, man. I'm begging you, please. - [Officer] Hey, don't move your hand, okay? - [Officer] Just relax, relax, relax, relax. I know, I know. - Perfect. - [Randall] I just want the cuffs undone a little bit, man. - [Officer] We did it. - [Randall] No, the other wrist is broken, dude. That's all I asked, man. And your officer was getting rude. Don't act like you were 'cause you were. Lie to me. You're on camera being rude. - [Officer] Okay, do you wanna sit him up or? - [Resident] You act like 'cause you're a cop and a woman, you got a badge and you're better than me. - [Officer] Hey, come on, buddy. - [Randall] Can you help me up, please? I'm not gonna fight nobody, dude. That's all. I just wanted the cuffs undone a little bit. - You can't kick and scream though. That's not gonna work. - [Resident] I had to get the seatbelt off, it was cutting my circulation off, bro. I asked her to do it, just slammed the door in my face. (Randall screaming) - Got it - Dude. You guys are gonna take me to the hospital, dude. - Or jail. - No, hospital. My hand's broken, bro. That's my head. I'll pull him. (Randall sobbing) You can't pull me like that. My head, bro. My head's hitting the door. - Obviously - I'm too tall for this. (Randall screaming) What the? - But this guy is not only a terrible thief, he's also dangerous. A quick background check revealed that he had an active arrest warrant. Later, the video footage from GameStop also confirmed that the police had the right guy. Thanks to his odd fashion choices, it was pretty easy to spot him in the grainy tape. Randall was charged with first-degree robbery and kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment. - A common misconception is that shoplifters only steal out of desperation. But Detective Dale tells me that most of them are arrested for stealing random items and show no remorse. If you thought Randall was entitled meet our next suspect, who thinks you can just grab stuff from Walmart and go. - I'm not shoplifting! That's what I was saying. They were matches. Matches are supposed to be free. officers responded to a report of a shoplifting incident at Walmart. - [Suspect] That's not fair! - Stand up. - No, no. You have to be fair! Please. Please stop being unfair to me. - Upon reaching the scene, they were met by a perfectly calm looking woman who would soon be schooled on the revolutionary concept of paying for stuff. - Hello. - Hello. - [Officer] Hi, we have somebody matching your description that was shoplifting at the Walmart. - No. - [Officer] They said they took off towards the Subway. - Yeah. - Wearing an orange jacket. - No, I mean they said they thought I was, but I didn't have a flashlight that I got at their store. - Okay. I got one at Harbor Freight a lot earlier, and I got matches and a rope. Because I'm setting up on my camp again and it's dark. You know what I mean? But I didn't need that. I just needed the matches and the rope so I could set up a tarp. - [Officer] Do you have a receipt? - For what? - [Officer] I thought you said you got matches and a tarp? - Yeah, I got matches and a rope. - [Officer] So do you have a receipt for the transaction? - Huh? - Do you have a receipt for that transaction? - No, I'm just getting a sandwich now. I mean, I brought it all over here. - [Officer] Brought what? - The rope. - [Officer] Okay. Do you want to turn around? - For what? - For shoplifting. - I did not. No, I just bought that sandwich. - [Officer] You just told me. - Okay. - I didn't know. - [Officer] Hey, relax. You're being detained. - For what? - Shoplifting. - [Suspect] I didn't shoplift nothing. - Relax. - No, please don't. - [Officer] Give me your hand. (suspect sobbing) - [Suspect] Why are you doing this to me? I don't wanna go to jail right now. (suspect talking indistinctly) Because you couldn't even do one day. Why do you have to arrest me? Why? - [Officer] You're being detained. Hey! - Stop! - Relax. - Don't do that. (suspect screaming) - My stuff! - [Officer] Relax. - That's not fair. Nobody gets to get my stuff because you're a jerk. - Relax. - That's not fair. - Stand up. - No! No, you have to be fair, please! Please, somebody be fair to me. Please, anybody, please be fair. I fed everybody. - Okay. - It's not right. - Come on. - No! - [Officer] Relax. (suspect screaming) Take a seat. (suspect sobbing) What's your name? (suspect screaming) Ma'am? (suspect screaming) What's your name? (suspect screaming) Ma'am? You're gonna get charges. (suspect screaming) What's wrong? Ma'am, I'm trying to help you. (suspect screaming) - [Suspect] How're you helping me? How? - [Officer] I'm trying to figure out what's going on. - You don't know s**t about what's going on. I can tell you. - Okay, what's your name? - It's not my business. Nobody will even let me know. - [Officer] What's your name? - [Suspect] Nobody will even let me know. - [Officer] What's your name? - [Suspect] How am I supposed to help you? - [Officer] Okay, what's your name? - [Suspect] How am I supposed to help you if nobody lets me know? - [Officer] You're gonna charged with- - [Suspect] I'm just started doing well. I need my business to calm me down. - Okay, what's your name? - No. - [Officer] No? Okay. Did you see her hit the officer? - She just came in and ordered. - She ordered a salad, she paid and everything. - [Officer] Okay. - And then she asked to use the restroom, and I told her they were out of order and then she just sat. - [Officer] Well, that's when I just showed up because I saw her going that way. - Yeah, I don't know. I just- - [Officer] Okay, did you see any of that incident that happened right there? - No. - No, I walked away. - [Officer] Okay, all right, all right, cool. They said that they went towards the back and they didn't see nothing. - I just felt like, "Does that hurt?" Because I was like turning her wrist. - [Officer] Yeah, that wasn't me. - [Officer] You can take her over there. - [Officer] Yeah- - She chose this moment to play the victim and expected the cop to feel bad for her. - I didn't do anything wrong. - Okay. So, again, the reason why we got called is because of a shoplift that was reported. I did see video footage of you. - Of me shoplifting? - Yes. - How? - It's on video footage. - What did I lift? - [Officer] What do you mean what did you lift? - What did I lift? - What'd you grab? - What did I shop for? That's not shoplifting. - [Officer] If you grab something and then you leave, that- - I pay all the time. - [Officer] Okay. Do you have those flashlights on you? - You guys took everything. - Okay. - I paid $10 for that sandwich that I'm not getting now because of you guys. - Okay. - You know how much that's costing me? What I don't have. - [Officer] I'm sorry about that. - Not to mention to my health. - Okay. - I don't know what I'm supposed to do. - [Officer] Okay, do you have any of the- - What am I supposed to do? - [Officer] Okay, do you have any of the- - And then when they let me out, what am I supposed supposed to do then? - Do you have any- - Come back and these people that are going to laugh at me for getting arrested? - [Officer] Do you have any flashlights on you? - I don't know. I don't know what I have on me. I don't even know if I have clothes or not I feel so stupid. - [Officer] You do have clothes on, ma'am? - Obviously, my flesh is my clothes. - [Officer] I'm asking you a question. Well, I'm answering your question. Can I check your pockets to make sure there's no flashlight so we can rule that out? - I mean, you just take everything of value off of me because you already have. - [Officer] Okay, so right now you're being detained, okay? For the crime of shoplifting. - Obviously, can I get out? - No. - Why? - [Officer] You're not free to leave. - I'm not free to leave, I'm not trying to leave. What am I gonna do? Leave in handcuffs and then run around like somebody's gonna set me free? Like I'm not just gonna get thrown out and made fun of some more because I'm in handcuffs I can't get out of. - [Officer] Yeah, okay. So, can I check your pockets to make sure there's no flashlight in there? - No. - No? - Is that gonna stop you? - [Officer] No, well, when you do get arrested for shoplifting- - I'm not shoplifting. That's what I was saying. They were matches. Matches are supposed to be free. - [Officer] Okay, well unfortunately- - [Officer] I don't know about the rope. Maybe the rope, I'm sorry. - Okay. - But still. Like why is that so big? - [Officer] There's two flashlights, look. - And where does it have me taking them? - Okay. - It's two packages. Just like a regular long flashlight. And then the ones that has like the LED bar. - [Officer] You guys wanna pursue for the shoplifting? - Yeah. - All right. - Why? Why can't you just ticket me and make me pay you? Like I would pay you. I just don't have that much to pay you all at once. - [Radio] Copy, 19-40. - Please let me pay you. - [Officer] Okay, well, unfortunately that ship has sailed. - [Officer] I thought I was on a payment plan. - No. - Why can't I just pay you? - [Officer] There's no payment plan when it comes to Walmart or at least any business. - I had a $25 dividend from them. - Who knew a little evidence could work such financial magic. Our suspect obviously has some unresolved issues, which she'd eventually admit while turning the officer's car into an impromptu therapy session. - [Officer] What do you have right here? - I don't know. - You don't know? - I don't remember. - Okay. - I have to strap everything to me and I don't know what I have on me until I get to a spot where I can take it all out and go through it. - [Officer] Okay. You have a golf ball? - I juggle. I taught myself to juggle during the C***d. - [Officer] That's pretty cool. - It's not. - Is it difficult to learn? - Yeah. - Yeah. You see, that's a useful skill. - I don't think so. - It is. - Keep me from wanting to hurt myself or other people. But I don't get very often to do it because nobody gives about that stuff. - [Officer] Well, there's a lot of people that make- - Not at night. I don't give a about that stuff. I wanna be warm, and I wanna be loved, and I wanna be home. - [Officer] Please step out. - I haven't felt any of those things for a year. - [Officer] Can you step out please? - And before that I kept going through it and people just kept laughing at me. The same four set of girls. - I'm sorry about that. - Just laughing at me that I couldn't use my to make money. I don't want to do what they did. I will not do what they did. - [Officer] Can you please come out. - But I don't think they're wrong or they're bad or they're stupid. I just think they're mean. - [Officer] Okay. Ma'am can you please come out. - And I can be mean and ugly, but I don't want to do what any people say. I just get over it. I don't think people have the right to do this to me, personally. - Do what? - What you're doing. - [Officer] Checking to make sure you don't have any merchandise on you? - What did I get that wasn't absolutely necessary for my life? - [Officer] Okay, I understand. - For my safety? Like I at least care about my life and my safety. I don't go around risking everybody else's. - [Officer] I understand. - And nobody protects me from that. - You could- - Nobody supports me for that. - [Officer] Can you please sit down? - Nobody even let's me see my kids without after party tantrums for that. - [Officer] Okay, all right. - The woman was charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest. You might think shoplifters are just desperate for essentials, but not our next suspect. She's apparently so ravenous, she can't tell the difference between a set of fake nails and a sandwich. - [Officer] Your whining is not gonna get you anywhere. It never does. - It doesn't matter, sir. - Listen to me, do you want a copy of your trespass, yes or no? Do you want a copy of your trespass from CVS? - Shoplifters love to play the victim card and so did our next suspect. She had a big sob story to tell, but nothing could justify her cart of stolen items. - [Suspect] I had jewelry already. - [Manager] Yep, that's from us. That's from us. - [Lori] A long time to go, and it's in the side pocket. - [Manager] That's from us. - 64-year-old Lori Ward was allegedly found to be shoplifting multiple items from a local CVS in September, 2023. - [Officer] How we doing? - Okay. - Here you go. Do me a favor real quick, all right? Come here. - Why? - [Officer] Don't go away from me. Come here. - Please - Come here. - Please don't. Please, I'm begging you. - [Officer] Okay, and I'm begging you, I'm begging you to put your arms behind your back for a minute. - [Lori] Please don't, 'cause it hurts me. - Okay. - Please. - [Officer] Put your arms behind your back. - [Lori] Please, please. - [Officer] I'm 10-12. - Please. - Put your arms behind your back. - [Lori] Please don't do this to me, please. Listen. - Do not resist. - [Lori] Can I tell you something? - [Officer] I'm gonna tell you something real quick. Resist and you go to the ground, you hear me? So right now you're just being detained. - [Lori] My clothes and stuff that they stole from me last night at church. - Well- - And I never got to see Pastor Terry because he didn't show yesterday morning, but I have to leave today 'cause they came by and told me. - [Officer] Listen, do you wanna sit down here or do you wanna sit down right here next to your bike? - I'm okay. - Huh? - I'm okay. - [Officer] Which place do you wanna sit down at? That's what I'm asking. - I need my bag, my wallet. - Okay. - The other one's not mine. - [Officer] It's not going anywhere. We're standing right here. - I got that, but I just don't want anybody to take it 'cause it's got my cards in it. Everybody stole my cards. - [Officer] Okay, we're we're not going anywhere. We're standing right here. - I get that. - I'm asking do you wanna sit down here or do you wanna sit down right there? - I'm all right standing, I'm okay. I'm afraid I'll mess my pants. - [Officer] You're gonna sit down while I do what I need to do. - Okay. - Do you wanna sit here or do you wanna sit there? - I'll sit here. - Okay. - I gotta tell you something. That purse is my girlfriend's and she's at over at Daily Bread that I just came from. And she wants- - [Officer] Right now everything that is right here is in your possession right now. So let's have a seat. - [Lori] It doesn't belong to me. - [Officer] Have a seat. - She asked me to look for nails and for lashes for her and stuff. - Okay. - And I called her and she said- - We'll talk about all that in just a second. Have a seat. - She's coming. - [Officer] I'm gonna help you down. Have a seat. You said this wallet is yours? - That's my wallet, yes, sir. - Okay. Has it got an ID in it? - [Lori] Well, no, 'cause I have to go to the ID, driver's license because they stole it all again. - So don't have an ID? - No, they stole all my purses, all my IDs. - Okay. - Bicycle number eight. The one I'm riding right here is number eight in six weeks. And my locks and I can't find a chain. I bought a lock but I can't find a chain to be able to hook it up to. - [Officer] Where do you live at, Lori? - [Lori] I'm homeless. - Huh? - I'm homeless. - [Officer] Okay. - That's what I was saying, that's why I had to leave my church, His Place. I've served two and a half years helping 'em till C***d, and then they stopped doing like handing out bagged foods and that kind of stuff, and a sit down dinner on Sundays. And also at Cornerstone. - Okay. - I do- - [Officer] Where do you lay your head at night? - Wherever I can. - Okay. - [Lori] They fentanyl bombed me. - What's that? - They fentanyl bombed me and killed me December 5th and they left me for dead and went to supposedly to Dollar Tree and left me there to die. And I did die. And they brought me back with CPR. But they broke all my ribs. I was sharing the studio near the old Mitchum Apartments. I was sharing this studio with a buddy of mine. He had brain cancer, I have four cancers. I just found out. I've been so sick I can't eat. That was really. Because you get kind of stuck. My daughter was gonna come get me today and she was gonna take me out to her house. There's a couple places, Beachside. And then there's also one on Lipscomb. And I'm real worried about Lipscomb. That's like the hood. I don't wanna live in the hood by myself. - [Officer] I hear you. - She kept whining about being homeless and hungry, but guess what she chose to take? - [Lori] I put back the nails and the eyelashes. - No, you didn't, I watched you open them. - [Lori] I did. - What bag? - I watched you open this. - What bag? What bag did she put them in? - She hid them under in here. - Underneath that stuff? - Yeah. - This is the only thing she paid for was two pot pies. - Okay. - No, no. I didn't take pot pie's. My stuff right there in the cart. - [Manager] Okay, it was that. My cashier was mistaken, yeah. - [Officer] There's a chicken salad. - Hi, long time no see. - Hi, how you doing? - And I told her- - But she was taking nails. She opened up this. - [Lori] I put it back. I told the other girl that I put it back. - It said that she was putting it a purse. - Yep, she was shoving it in her purse. - In this purse? - I watched her shoving in the purse over in the grocery aisle where there was no cameras. I watched her go over into another aisle where there's no cameras and open this. Acted like a regular customer. - [Lori] It was eyelashes and the set of nails. - Yep. - [Lori] I was calling my girlfriend and I told the girl in the cereal aisle- - I'll wait. - [Officer] So what do you need done? - We're gonna check, make sure she's out here. So far it was the retainer, I hadn't even got that and stuff. - [Officer] So you want an affidavit signed? - Affidavit, and if they have anything in video- - I'll check on my video. - That'd be- - [Manager] There's all my nails. And my charger. - [Cashier] And some earrings of ours. - I had jewelry already. - Yep, that's from us. - [Lori] That's from here- - That's from us. - A long time ago. And it's in the side pocket of that one. I have eight granddaughters. - [Officer] This is missing a bunch of them. - Yeah. - I'm wondering if that is old stuff. She's saying that it was a friend's, but that one's missing a bunch of earings. - [Cashier] Her friend told her to wait for those nails too that she was with. - [Lori] She did, and the eyelashes. - Right, and they're all in her purse. - [Officer] You got another bag we can start putting items in that are your guys'? - [Lori] It's not my purse. - Yeah, magic! - So I watched her through the store and talked to her and while I was talking to her, I was looking in her bag to see what she had stolen. - [Officer] These are the items? You saw those specific items in the bag? - Those specific items. And then while I was at the register with my employee up there, I saw her take the power bank and then she backed out of the line, went down an aisle and she stole it. - Okay. - I watched her open this. I watched her open up a bunch of nails. - [Officer] Did she discard the box? - Yep. - Yes. - She discarded the box in the aisle. - [Officer] Where'd she discard the box at? - Aisle seven. - [Officer] So, I'm gonna read you something, okay? - [Lori] Did you hear me? - [Officer] And then I'm gonna talk to you. - Okay. - Okay? - I'm dying here. I can't eat some food? - [Officer] Before we ask you any questions, you must understand your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand each of these rights that I have explained to you? - Yeah. - Having these rights in mind do you wish to talk to me? - Yes. - Okay. - The cart that has my clothes that this girl stole last night that I ended up with like three bags of clothes and the little teeny bags. - [Officer] We're gonna talk about why you're here at CVS, okay? - [Lori] I'm starving, I haven't eaten in two days. I just got the stamps on my card this morning. - Okay. - And I'm hungry. And I don't have money for anything. - [Officer] Have you ever been arrested before? - Yeah, but for stupid stuff. Trespass two times. - [Officer] Have you been arrested for theft before? - [Lori] Oh, way long ago. My kids were babies. - [Officer] How long ago? - [Lori] Long time. Alyssa's 40 now. - [Officer] Okay. Because depending on what, you're probably gonna have to go to the jail today. - The cops discovered this wasn't her first rodeo swiping non-essential items despite pocketing food stamps that very morning. Lori's demands escalated from food to Advil. Suggesting she wasn't a needy homeless person, but a woman with a detailed shopping list. - I want that to go with me with my phone. - Yep. - I'm gonna take your phone. I'll take this little- - [Lori] And I also have glasses 'cause I can't see when I'm in there. - [Officer] Yep, your glasses are right here. I'll grab your glasses for you. These? - Yeah, that's okay. - [Officer] That's fine. They're not gonna take the pouch, so I'm gonna take the glasses. - Please. - All right, cool. Thank you. - Can you let me take that bike and my little- - [Officer] No, we're gonna stand up, okay? (officers speaking indistinctly) Go ahead and stand up. - I can't get up. I need someone on this side. - [Officer] Yep, they're there. - I can't hold it in. - [Officer] Here, hold on. - [Lori] Can you let me smoke my butt, please? - [Officer] You're not gonna need those. - Smoke my butt? - That's fine. - Okay. - [Officer] That's just one thing. - Will you let me smoke my butt, please? - [Officer] Let's go to my car this way. - Please will you let me smoke my butt? - No. - You said you would. I can't have one of the sodas? - You can't take anything to drink with you. - I can't drink, I can't eat? I haven't eaten for two days. I have no money and no stamps till this morning. That's why I just got this. - [Officer] I can help you get her in their. - Please help me. - Okay. - [Officer] Lori. Lori, look at me. Lori. - [Officer] I'm gonna go to Hall's and do medical clearance. - Stop for a second, okay? Your whining's not gonna get you anywhere. It never does. - It doesn't matter - Listen to me. Do you want a copy of your trespass, yes or no? - When? - Do you want a copy of your trespass from CVS? That's yes or no. - No, I don't care. - No, okay. - I'm worried about my- - [Officer] She doesn't need a copy of that. - I'm worried about my bike and my clothes. The stuff that's in that basket is the clothes is my son's for his birthday. - [Officer] Those are gonna be in the police department. - That girl just took it off. She stole my son's birthday gift yesterday. This was her last night. They came back and robbed the rest of my stuff. I got to put in a protection order. - I'll check her before we get there. I'm gonna grab a bag to put all her stuff in. Come all the way back here, Lori. Come on back here, Lori. I'll lead you to the back of the car. - Can I at least take my Advil or my meds? - [Officer] You can't take your medications up there. - [Officer] Stay right here. - [Officer] You can't take any medications to the jail. - [Lori] I'm not taking to the jail. I just want you to give me an Advil. - [Officer] You wanna try to get some of these bracelets off too, that we'll put in your purse? That way you have less things that you need to worry about. - Can I get two Advils, please? I'm in so much pain. - I'm sorry, we don't give out medication. - No, I have it in my purse. - Something happens while you're on this medication then guess what? Your name's on the front of our police department. You don't have any drugs or anything on you, do you? - No. - [Officer] Have you used drugs since the last time I caught you with them a while back? - I didn't have it. That was on the sidewalk, it was not mine. But they told me I'd have to wait two months for a trial. He told me that I would've won. - [Officer] All right, let's come in here and have a seat. I'm gonna hand you the seatbelt if you'll buckle her from that side. Go ahead, have a seat. Have a seat. It's gonna go to the PD and then you'll have a property receipt for that. - And the phone, I gotta turn it off. - [Officer] I have your phone. We can turn it off. - I have the charger in there. - [Officer] Yep, we'll turn it off. All right, it's locked. - Lori was charged with theft second-degree and other larceny, first offense. - Well, let's hope these individuals learned their lesson, even if it had to be the hard way.
