You're going to get away, huh? Oh, >> you panicked. What does it say here? >> What about the red lights behind you? >> He came out. I thought he was going to rear end somebody and then he just came across. >> Old lady was walking her dog. They would have been dumb. >> Popped up on this curb. Commander got out. I was like, hold >> seat belt cutter. Why would you have that in there if you don't have a car? >> I mean, I have a couple knives in there, too. You know what I'm saying? On June 30th, 2023, a Palm Coast woman reported her minivan stolen. At first, the situation appeared to be a routine vehicle theft. However, that assessment changed once deputies located the vehicle and identified the individual driving it. The investigation soon turned into a highstakes multi-county pursuit with investigators linking the driver to thousands of dollars in stolen property. According to the car owner, the vehicle had been parked in or near her home the previous night, and she discovered it missing in the early hours of the morning. Personal belongings, including identification and registration documents, were also inside the vehicle at the time it was taken. >> Happened last night. >> Yes. Okay. >> I just was walking saw her and she had a walk [ __ ] in the car and everything. >> Okay. >> And everything. >> Officer, sir, my name is Fatima. >> Mhm. stole my car. >> Okay, so >> Towny Country, my drive license and everything in there, the car except this cards comes in the mail. That's why I have is I have two cars, but one is in New Jersey. Can you see the 2006 that I don't see? I did not check well >> to put my dog PP >> and I sit a little bit on the bench and then I went inside. The car was here. >> Okay. >> But uh maybe it was my mistake, but usually I do that. I take the key and I put under the seat. in the front. My car has stuff as things like clothes, boxes in the back because when I'm here, I travel New Jersey, but New Jersey I do different shops. When I'm here, I do flea market. >> Yesterday I went to Porto flea market. >> So it's not was not full. It's not full with the but >> yeah has clothes in the middle of the seat >> and few boxes in the on in the back in the back and few items like household meas because I use it >> new and use it uh clothes stuff like that. >> Okay. >> So it's stuff in there. My my bag is there. Um, >> your pocket book. >> Your pocketbook bag with the driver license is there >> and your credit cards and everything. Everything is >> No, the credit card. The credit card. Thanks, God. Is in a in a wallet that I that it's a case. It's not a wallet. Is a case that I put that I put the cell phone. >> Okay. I have any of that in there? >> Yeah. Where is my car? >> So So describe my what? >> So yeah, I'm going to have you fill out a couple of paperwork and then we'll go from there. Okay. >> Thank you very much. Oh my god. >> All right. >> Oh my god. I do not realize things like that. You know what? Nobody never stole my car. >> Yeah, they they probably came in the middle of the night while you were sleeping. >> Yeah. >> So, >> and they find they open the door, they find the key. >> Your door probably You left the door probably unlocked. >> I don't remember. Yeah. Usually I press the button >> and they press the button and they close. >> You have two pair of keys or one pair of keys? >> No, just one. One pair of key underneath the >> And the keys of the house, too. >> Yeah. >> And the same in the same in the same in the same key chain. >> In the same key chain. Now I have to request to to change the keys. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Oh my god. >> Let's go inside and clear the paperwork. >> Yeah. Oh my god. Let me just call my landlord. Oh Jesus Christ. Let me just call them. >> Well, they have nothing to do. So >> um in that situation >> that situation did you >> do you transfer the information for the police commun whatever? >> Yeah we're we're going to put like a uh attempt to locate it. We're going to put it out a bolo for the vehicle. So >> yeah I I try to see if I have photos that >> Yeah. We we can pull up a picture for your your car too. Oh, you can put out from the reg the vehicle >> because we have LPR systems in in our county where we can read license plates and I'm next to the clubhouse but they don't have cameras over here. >> Just just give me a second to to call for my landlord because in that way I have to request to change the change the key. >> So you want to sit over here or inside? >> Okay. Whatever you want to do cuz you got a couple paper to fill out. >> Yeah. Okay. You can see because I think I have raw. >> Based on the initial information, deputies entered the vehicle into law enforcement databases and issued a be on the lookout BO alert. Within approximately 2 hours of the report, law enforcement received information that the stolen vehicle had been cited elsewhere in Flaggler County. Deputies then established a police perimeter around the identified zone before making contact with the vehicle. >> Dispatch has been updated. He's taking off. He's taking off. Confirmed. Tag. Tag is confirmed. >> Dispatch has been >> traffic 14 on behind me. He's stopping. Looks like a single whiskey mic occupant. Bald head. Sunglasses. Purple hatch is just blowing the roadway. Back out of the parkway. Stick in. Stick in. stick. >> Looks like you're going west on the Parkway. >> You just cross the talking. During the pursuit, the vehicle was driven at high speed through public roadways, at times crossing medians and entering areas not intended for vehicular traffic. Law enforcement used deflation devices in an attempt to disable the vehicle safely. A deputy successfully deployed them, puncturing at least some of the SUV's tires. Even with compromised tires, the vehicle continued driving, ultimately pulling into the parking lot of a Dunkin Donuts near Palm Coast Parkway, Southwest and Cypress Point Parkway. As soon as the vehicle stopped, the driver reportedly abandoned it and attempted to flee on foot. However, he couldn't get far. has been updated. >> A white male and a white female. >> I'm not resisting, sir. >> I'm scared, man. Sorry. I'm scared. Comm center real time crime center. Outstanding. Teamwork. Congratulations. >> The driver of the stolen vehicle was identified as Nathan, a 30-year-old resident of Jacksonville who was already wanted in another jurisdiction on fraud related charges. A second individual, later identified as 26-year-old Veronica, was believed to be traveling with him. That single piece of information altered the entire trajectory of the case. >> Do you have anything on me that's going to poke me or stick me? >> Do you have any weapons? >> I don't think so. I might have a pocketk knife. >> You have a pocketk knife? >> I might. >> Don't reach for it. Okay. >> I'm going to turn you towards me. We're going to stand up. All right. Stand up. Where's your pocket out at, ma'am? >> If I have one that's in my pocket. >> Okay. Just don't reach for it. Okay. >> Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. >> You got any ID on yours? Is it in the trunk? In the car? >> I don't know. >> You don't know? >> I don't know. I just woke up, man. >> Just woke up. >> Yeah. >> I just got suited, >> huh? >> Yes, sir. >> Oh, cross my arms. You can ask the first officer to I woke up the first officer making contact. You don't see anything right now. Just give us a couple minutes. Okay. >> Actually, is there one close by? >> Yeah, sure. >> Are you injured or anything? >> Um, the airbags kind of got me a little bit and y'all kind of threw me on the ground, but you know, I'm cool. >> I'll say you put yourself in that predicament. Wouldn't you say? I mean, I just woke up, man. I >> was You look right at me. It's okay. >> I don't know what I'm doing. >> I know. >> Let's go. >> Must have been that training. >> You want it up? You need medical attention? Want to get checked out? >> Um, on the curb, okay? Just in case. >> Can you do me a favor and go and stand up for me real quick? I got a female deputy over here that's going to search you. Okay. Yeah. >> And there's nothing on you going to stick to or hurt or anything like that, right? >> I said I might have a pocket knife >> in your pocket, right? >> I doubt it. I doubt it. >> Hey, Deputy Cowan. >> Deputy Cowan. >> Okay. She's going to do a search on you. Okay. >> Anything to your pocket for me? >> I might have a pocket knife, but I doubt it. >> Okay. Where would you normally keep that? In one of my front pockets, but I don't think I do. >> So, there might be cash in here. >> Yeah. Pull that out, Brian to try to f. >> According to Nathan, he was unaware a pursuit was underway and claimed he had only recently noticed law enforcement presence. This account was inconsistent with his driving behavior during the incident. furniture. >> I guess. Oh, hey. >> Start getting some tools out of here. I'm >> going to run them. >> Uh I don't know if that's a rifle or a BB gun in there, but >> there's a lot of stuff to run. I guess it's like a yard equipment. lock cement saw >> lady did not have all the problems. >> All right. Well, BB gun bent. >> Bravo 25. The guys that's taking the call is going to come talk to you in just a second. Okay. I don't want to tell you wrong. >> I'm about to run her now. I'm about to run her now. >> Just leave your feet sitting out for me. >> Ouch. >> When I was there, >> I mean, can I actually? >> Sure. >> You know, you could have got out of the car, too. When I told you to get out of the car, >> I didn't know. I didn't I didn't know what the [ __ ] was going on. >> You know the red and blue lights behind you would have got your boyfriend like all I seen was >> that would have made sense, right? >> Was you the one that got seen your face and his face? >> I don't know what the [ __ ] >> You should get out of the car. >> I don't know what the >> Now you're part of it. >> I'm from Duvall. >> Where's he from? >> Duvall. >> Where? Duvall from Duvall or you said somewhere else >> straight through people's yards, man. >> He came out. I thought he was going to rear end somebody and then he just came across. >> Old lady was walking her dog. They would have been dumb. >> Popped up on this curb. Commander got out. I was like, "Oh, yes. I'm running, boy." >> All right. Who's right here? Stamped in the motor housing, crank case, and left. So right here rubbed off. >> Yeah. >> Unless that's it. >> No, I think that's a UPC code. How they put them on shelves. >> Looks like corner rail steel product. >> Yeah. Let's see if we can >> scan this little guy right here. >> You want me to take my >> Oh, come on. >> No, mine missed. >> Missed. Who else was with you over there? Anybody? >> Uh, Tassy >> right here. He missed it. >> Ty, you missed it, too? >> Yeah, I missed it. >> Yeah, I missed the other freaking miss. Um, yeah. It doesn't scan, so I can't see. >> Well, >> that one. >> Same thing. >> Same thing, man. Think it's on the housing and it's not >> right here. >> Is that Oh, what the [ __ ] It's small. >> You all right? >> Probably 25. Check with Miley, but we probably just have the victims come over here and ID and stuff. All >> right, then. Hop out. >> Hey, sir. Man, please look. >> Okay, hop out. >> It's twisted. >> I'm trying to My arms are numb. >> It's twisted. >> All right, we can get the cuffs fixed over here. Okay, come this way. Yeah, that's how they're designed. >> Yeah, but it's bastard, man. >> Yeah, you see myself. >> I can fit two fingers in. During the vehicle search, officers recovered tools and equipment, consistent with earlier reports of property theft in nearby locations. The presence of these items supported the theory that the suspects had been involved in multiple theft related incidents prior to the vehicle pursuit. Among these were tools and devices that could be used in vehicle entry or emergency escape situations. Meanwhile, Veronica, sitting in the back of the police vehicle, claimed that she had contacted Nathan for a ride after becoming stranded. She said she fell asleep shortly after entering the vehicle and was unaware it had been stolen and she denied any involvement in the reported burglaries. However, her belongings would indicate otherwise. >> You live up in Jacksonville? >> Yeah. >> Can I ask you how you got down here tonight? >> I got um I got stranded close to St. Augustine and um I called for a ride. >> Okay. Okay. >> And I fell asleep in the vehicle. >> Okay. >> And I was picked up. >> What time did you get stranded? >> Um, it was like early morning, late night, early morning. >> Well, right now it's 10:36 in the morning. When you're saying early morning, you're talking midnight. I'm talking like around right before sunrise. >> Okay. Ma'am, are you on anything right now? Are you high? You intoxicated or you >> No. >> No. Okay. So, right before sunrise, you're talking about 6:00 in the morning. >> Yeah. I I don't I don't have a phone myself, so I don't I couldn't tell you what time it was. I know it was still nighttime but not quite daytime. >> Okay. >> You know what I'm saying? >> So, who did who did you call for a ride? >> I called Nate. >> Nate? Okay. >> He was the only number I knew. >> Okay. What's Nate's number? Where's your phone, ma'am? >> How did you call him? >> I used somebody else's phone. >> You know whose phone you used? >> Some some store. I was at some store. I I'm not familiar with the area. Okay. So, you said you were stranded in St. Augustine last night early this morning. >> And Nate picked you up. You called Nate. Nate came picked you up. >> Yeah. >> He came and picked you up in the van that you were in. >> Yeah. >> Right here. >> Yeah. >> Van that's gone now. >> And you said that was around 6:00 in the morning. >> Something like that. Yeah. >> Okay. And from there, where did you go? Um, I'm not really sure after that. Like I I fell asleep shortly after that. I thought was going back to Jacksonville. We was on the highway and um it's been a long night. I went to sleep. >> Went to sleep. Okay. >> Like I was probably in the car maybe 20 minutes before I went to sleep. Maybe I lost it. Okay. >> You were in the car for maybe 20 minutes before you went to sleep. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. So, from St. Augustine, when when's the next time that you uh remember anything happening? Um, I woke up um to somebody coming through the window or through the door at at Nate like they was trying to fight him is what it seemed like. That's when I woke up. >> That's the next thing you remember? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. And so you don't remember doing a vehicle burglary over um right behind Publix? >> No, sir. >> You don't remember Nate going over there and and doing a burglary over there? Vehicle burglary over there? You don't remember him doing a vehicle burglary up in St. Augustine? >> No, sir. >> How long do you know Nate? Um, >> and when you say Nate, you're talking about Nathan Ellison, this person. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. How long do you know Nate? >> Um, >> I don't know, about a year, maybe. >> A year. How do you know him? >> Um, I met him through mutual friends. >> And when's the last time that you saw Nate? >> Go forward now. Yes. >> Um >> before 6:00 a.m. this morning. >> Few days ago. >> Few days ago. Okay. And where was that? >> In Jacksonville. >> In J. How did you get to St. Augustine from Jacksonville? >> Um I I came with a group of friends. >> Okay. Who's your friends that you came with? >> Is it relevant? >> Yes. >> It was just a group of old friends that I went to high school with. Do you have their names? >> I do, but I'd rather not give them to you. >> You don't want to give them to me? Okay. >> Um, do you have any anybody that can verify that for you then? >> Verify what? >> That you came down here with a group of friends, not one of them that I can call right now and verify that you came down there with with them. And what? They stranded you behind. >> I've ventured off. I'm sure. >> You ventured off. Okay. Yeah, we there was an altercation and I didn't want to be a part of it, so I ventured off on foot. >> Okay. >> And if the police were to call these people, they're going to be like, "Wow, you're getting police involved?" Blah, blah, blah. Like, I'm not trying to I'm not trying to drag anybody else into this when they're not even relevant. Okay. So, where exactly in St. Augustine did did you go last night? >> Um, we was at a friend's house. It was like the edge of St. Augustine kind of. >> What does that mean? The edge of St. >> Like like the side like I don't know. I don't know. It was like off of US1 but it was closer to Jacksonville. It wasn't like I'd never seen like I never seen like the the town, you know what I mean? Like it was kind of like country like I guess you could say it. We never left Philips Highway. >> So in the area of Phillips Highway. >> Yeah. It was like US1 coming into St. Augustine. >> And then where did uh Nate pick you up from exactly? >> I was >> because you wandered off. Yeah, I was walking down. >> Well, you said you you went and you uh used a phone store. What phone? >> I'm not even sure, man. >> What store? >> I'm not even sure. >> So, where did Nate pick you up? I mean, you had to tell him. >> I told him I told him I was walking down Philips Highway. So, so Nate, who you hadn't seen in a few year, a few days, who you only know for a year, he leaves Jacksonville and starts traveling down US1 from Jacksonville looking for you. Unknown where he's looking, just that he's looking for you somewhere in St. Augustine. >> I told him I was walking down Phillips Highway toward Jackson. So, you thought you were walking northbound on US Highway 1? >> Yeah. >> And towards Jacksonville, and he's driving southbound on US Highway One. >> I don't know where he was coming from, but he was like, "I got you. I'll be there as soon as possible." And he, in fact, was not there as soon as possible. And it was a couple hours. But, >> you know, this doesn't sound >> I understand that, but that's what happened. >> All right. So, if uh if we drove you around to uh some vehicle burglaries, would you be uh able to remember being there? >> No, sir. >> No. >> No, sir. >> Well, if you were there, >> if I was there >> and there's evidence to show that you were there, >> okay, >> then how is that possible that you remember? I'm sure I could have been there, but like I said, when I hit that vehicle, I was asleep at within 20 minutes. I was sleeping. I say, "So, it's your um your statement, and I don't want to put words in your mouth, but it's your statement that when Nate picked you up at 6:00 a.m. this morning, thereabouts, walking up US Highway 1 towards Jacksonville. As soon as you got in the car, wherever that location was, you immediately fell asleep and didn't wake up until >> I fell asleep within 20 minutes and I did not. >> So, for the 20 minutes, where did you go? >> What do you mean? >> You said you were awake for 20 minutes when when they picked you up. >> I'm guessing we was on US one. US one what driving where? >> I don't know. North, south, I don't know. I wasn't paying attention, man. I really wasn't. >> Okay. So, you were with Nate from 6:00 a.m. on. >> Correct. >> 20 minutes 20 minutes of it. You were awake. >> Correct. >> And then you didn't wake up again, you're saying, until >> until that altercation happened with him and in that the the police officer, I guess, >> right? Have you seen Nate to drive that vehicle before? >> No, sir. >> Well, if I told you that that vehicle was stolen after you're saying you were picked up by him, is that the vehicle that he was picked up in? Picked you up in? >> That's the vehicle he picked me up in >> at 6:00 a.m. in the morning. >> Like I said, the time frame is weird for me. I didn't have a phone or anything. >> Well, you said it was the sun was just starting to come up, right? >> Right. It wasn't quite up, but yeah, it was >> so maybe even a little earlier. 5:30 to 6:30. >> I mean, it was it was like twilight. It was like middle of coming up middle of night. Like I don't know how to explain it. It was like twilight, I guess. >> Okay. Enough enough to where you could see your your feet walking on the street, >> right? >> Okay. So, at that at that point, if the car wasn't already stolen, >> sorry, I got my the car wasn't reported stolen till this morning. >> Okay. >> So, if you got down here with a ride from other people, right? And Nate, you're saying, >> "Are we in St. Augustine?" >> No, we're in Palm Coast. >> Okay. >> We're about probably about 30 minutes at least south of um St. Augustine on US1. >> Okay. in the northern section of St. Augustine. >> Okay. >> So, what you're saying doesn't make a whole lot of sense. >> Well, that's how I remember. >> And if you got picked up in St. Augustine in that vehicle, have you ever seen him in that vehicle before? >> No, sir. Honestly, I have not. >> Was all of that stuff in the vehicle? >> A lot of it was. I mean, I didn't see what all y'all pulled out, but when I got in the vehicle, it was pretty packed. >> Well, the only thing I pulled out was what >> I'm >> You said is your jump. >> I What I'm What I'm talking about is the stuff that they pulled out when when everything initially just now happened. They I seen them pull stuff out and I heard them talking on the the radio serial numbers and and such and um >> well there's it appears as though there's evidence of multiple car breaks. >> All I seen in the vehicle when I got in the vehicle there was like boxes boxes of stuff like and clothes. That's all I see when I got in the vehicle. >> And you said this bag is yours, right? And you you're not sure if it's going to have needles in it? >> I'm not sure if it's going to have anything in it. I just know that my ID was in it. >> So, when you got in the vehicle at 6:00 this morning, you had this in your possession the whole time? >> Yes. >> With you having a your emergency uh car window break and um seat belt cutter. Why would you have that in there if you don't have a car? because I was with some sketchy characters yesterday. Hence why Hence why I left. >> Uhhuh. That sketchy characters that you don't want to tell me their names. >> Correct. Because why would I get them involved in something they have nothing to do with? >> Well, cuz they're sketchy characters. >> They're sketchy characters and they're very sketchy on the street and if I if I put their name in any police activity, that puts my life in danger. >> Okay. >> Period. >> I'm sorry. So, where where did you get this from? You this was your weapon of choice. >> I mean, I have a couple knives in there, too. You know what I'm saying? >> Yeah. Which leads me to think, why would you need that? But um and then on another note, these uh these receipts in uh in the paper clip. >> I don't know where those came from, >> but they're they're in your bag. >> I understand that. But I was also asleep in that vehicle for a couple hours. It seems like I guess >> a couple hours, >> I guess. I don't know. I don't even know what time it is right now, dude. I was in that van. I did not take anything from that van. Um, I wasn't aware. It was not my intent to to to be trespassing or or whatever it would be. You know what I'm saying? Like I literally just called for a ride, bro. >> Called for a ride from a location that you don't remember. >> I told you I was on you this morning. >> Where you don't remember? I'll be uh taking possession of your uh your Jumpman bag and uh putting it into evidence under this case. Okay. >> Will I get my ID back? >> Your identification? Um, I don't have an issue getting that back to you after you get out. >> My cash app card and stuff. >> I'm sorry. >> My cash app card. >> I don't know about that because I I don't know that that's yours. >> It has my name on it. >> I'm sorry. >> Has my name on it? >> The cash app? >> The black cash app card. >> Oh, I'm talking about the uh Google cards. >> Oh, I'm not working. Anything that has your anything that has your name on it, I'm not uh overly concerned about getting that back to you. You can have that stuff back. Um, as far as I'm concerned, I'll take pictures of it and uh I'll I'll bag that separately so you can get that back. But as far as like the bag itself and the evidence that's inside of it, that's going to be evidence. Okay. >> Okay. >> Fair enough. >> Yeah. So, my cash app card, my food stamp card, and my ID. >> Anything that's identifiable to you. >> Okay. >> Okay. Certainly not the receipts, though. >> Okay. Those aren't mine anyways. I admit those aren't mine. I don't know where they came from. >> I'm sure they came from a victim. So, >> I'm sorry if they did, but I I didn't put them in my bag like >> Right. >> I'm sorry. >> No. >> I mean, you're treating me like I'm aing criminal and I didn't even do, bro. >> All right. Have I treated you with any disrespect? >> Well, you're sitting here staring in my face like, "Oh, I don't believe you. You're asking me the same question different ways." Bro, my answer is not going to change, bro. >> I'm being honest with you. I don't believe you. >> I understand that. I get it. >> But my answer is not going to change. >> Okay. I'm not trying to get you to change your answer. I'm just trying to get you to tell the truth. >> I'm telling the truth, dog. >> All right. As soon as uh >> following the investigation, both individuals were formally charged. Veronica faced multiple charges, including burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, grand theft of a motor vehicle, criminal mischief, and petty theft. Her bond was set at $5,000. The number of charges reflected the alleged pattern of entering vehicles and removing property over a period of time. In subsequent legal proceedings, Veronica entered a guilty plea to two counts of grand theft. The remaining charges were dismissed and she was sentenced to 120 days in state custody. Nathan faced a broader range of charges. In addition to grand theft of a motor vehicle, he was charged with multiple counts of grand theft related to stolen property, fleeing, and eluding law enforcement, resisting arrest, and seconddegree arson. The latter charge stem from evidence suggesting involvement in an additional criminal act separate from the vehicle theft and pursuit. His bond was set at $43,3. Nathan was ultimately sentenced to 18 months in state prison, followed by 3 years of probation. His sentence also included a one-year suspension of his driver's license upon release, reflecting the seriousness of the fleeing and eluding offense. This concludes the report from our investigation division at Twin Scope Cops. All individuals involved remain presumed innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law.
