He should have been in jail. He should have been in jail. But every time she kept dropping the charges and his family was going to press charges against him and everybody keeps dropping it against him. This isn't history. >> His thing was he would do something. He would enrage and then he was sorry. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Sorry. >> Sorry, baby. I'm sorry. >> She would take him back. >> I'm so sorry, [laughter] baby. She's been doing this for a long time and we've been trying to get her away from him, but domestic violence is hard. >> Is she okay? >> Unfortunately, um, your daughter's found deceased. >> [screaming] >> On May 29th, 2024, a frantic 911 call sent Seol County deputies rushing to a residence on San Jose Circle in Castlebury. 38-year-old Farrell stood in the doorway with blood on his hands, crying and apologizing as the reality of what had happened closed in. Inside, 34year-old Vanessa lay lifeless in a dried pool of blood. A knife still lodged in her head. That day at 9:07 a.m., Farel called Seol County dispatch crying hysterically and barely able to compose himself. But what he said next launched an immediate response. He told the dispatcher he had stabbed his girlfriend Vanessa. He gave the address 43 San Jose, stating that she was not breathing and was beyond help. The dispatcher asked if he still had the knife. He said no, it was still on her in her head. She asked where else he had stabbed her. He said her stomach and her face. She asked how many times. He said a couple. Seino County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Eager was first on scene. Eager approached the apartment and told the dispatch to have the caller step outside. The front door opened and Farel walked out, shaking and crying. Edgar gave him commands to step away from the door and get down. Farel [clears throat] complied without resistance. As he got on the ground, Edgar immediately noticed dried blood on his hands. apartment. >> Yeah, I got it. >> Yeah. Here. Here. Just chill here for a second. Just cuz I don't want to do anything stupid. >> Stay like [laughter] that. Right. Don't Don't do anything stupid. Okay. No, I'm not. I'm not. >> I hear you. All right, brother. You're good to go. >> Is it just her in the apartment? >> Yes, sir. >> What's her name? >> All right. >> Sheriff's office. [laughter] >> You stay here. >> Sheriff's office. [laughter] >> Hey, go with them inside. You want to for a second or you go inside? All >> right, brother. I'm going to search you. Okay. Or pat you down. [laughter] >> Any any knowledge or stuff on you? >> Okay. You get why I have to ask, right? [laughter] Hey, what time did this all happen? Just now. >> What time? >> Hey. Hey. It's It's good. All right. Hey, roll over. Roll over. Roll over. [clears throat] >> It's not good. >> You know what I mean? >> Hey, Stanley. >> Can you stay with him for a sec, please? All right. Thanks. Deputy Ager then entered the apartment to conduct a protective sweep. As he cleared the residence, he noted bunk beds in one of the bedrooms, indicating that children lived there. Upon reaching the master bedroom, found Vanessa lying face down on the floor next to the bed in a pool of dried blood. The attack had been far more brutal than the 911 call suggested. Vanessa was dead. >> I see bunk beds, sir. Where are the kids? In school >> in school. Okay. >> You good for travel? >> Yeah. We're good. >> When you lose 1933, hold on. Well, >> I saw where it was at and I saw zone five. I was like, that's close to my zone. >> Yeah, it's bad. >> Shortly afterward, the Seol County Fire Department arrived. Vanessa was pronounced deceased at 9:16 a.m., approximately 9 minutes after the 911 call. The whole time, Fel continued apologizing and crying. He had a cell phone on him, which was taken into custody as deputies secured him outside. >> All right. >> Hey, we appreciate you. All right. >> Thank you. >> Well, before you dip though, he needs you to need to sign a crime scene. uh >> we had a knifing. >> Is the other person inside? >> She is, but signal 7. So that's why I said just one of y'all. It's >> Hey, >> before they go, >> one one right now. One's just fine. You guys don't really need to go in so we have less people assigned. Are you hurt in any way physically? No, you don't need them to look at you. >> Hey, I I know. I just have to ask you these questions. Okay. >> You have ID in your with you anywhere? >> No. >> Do you know where hers might be at? [laughter] >> On my phone. >> Your phone? Okay. Is it cool if I grab it? You're feral taurus. C 306. Can you help my social security, please? >> You got it. Go ahead. >> Appreciate it. Y'all take care. >> 304. He's putting up tape somewhere. >> What? >> I saw him with the roll of crime scene tape somewhere, >> but I don't know where he could pe exactly. I think he's wrapping around this tree or something. I I don't know. >> He's right here. horsepower. >> Yeah. All right. Come on. Get up. Let's go. [laughter] Yeah. You're going to stand right here. Face the car, please. Okay. Separate your feet. Okay. This is your car Ferrar. >> Yeah. >> All right. Here. Just sit down. [laughter] Breathe. Okay. >> I know it's a lot, but it's You got to work with me. Okay. >> [laughter] >> You got your feet. >> Okay. [laughter] Get the AirPod out of his ear. [laughter] [laughter] Investigators later confirmed that Vanessa had been stabbed at least seven times. The wounds included a deep penetrating stab to the chest that reached her heart, a stab to the right side of her abdomen, a cut to her ear, and several additional wounds. The final blow was delivered to her face, where the knife lodged in her skull and remained there until officers arrived. No pulse was detected, and her body was cold to the touch. Detectives would later confirm that the weapon used was a 4-in Hankles pairing knife, consistent with the injuries observed and with what Farel had reported during the 911 call. In the kitchen, a drawer was found containing multiple knives similar to the one used. The master bedroom also showed clear signs of violence. During the investigation, a package of Members Mark baby wipes was found on the floor of the master bedroom near the south wall along with a used wipe containing suspected blood in the bedroom trash can. This indicated that Fel had used the wipes to clean himself. A bedroom security camera was found on the floor in a disabled state while three other cameras in the apartment remained active and captured the argument leading up to the attack. You good? >> Yeah. >> That was brutal. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I wouldn't. Yeah, >> that's pretty bad. I've seen so far. >> Thank god you're right there. You made a lot. >> Um made a lot easier for us to get this over with. Supposedly there's bunk beds in there and he said kids are in school but I don't know. >> So that's a what? >> The bunk beds are in there and he said the kids are in school but I don't know what school is still >> going. >> Well, he's uh we're a little too emotional to talk to right now. So I got some time to chill out a bit >> and then uh go from there. Yeah, I got it. just felt the rest for me. >> Just put CPD on her mind. >> Okay. Um, you mind holding on to this for a second? >> Yeah. >> I'm going to look for IDs for the female. Okay. [laughter] >> [laughter] [laughter] [laughter] >> [ __ ] Why would I DO THAT? [screaming] WHY? Why would I do that? [laughter] Why? Why would I do that? Why? Why? Baby, I'm sorry. Baby, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. While the scene was being processed, officers made contact with Farel's family members, including his sister and mother, who had gathered nearby. Now is there well ma'am Rodriguez CPD. >> Yeah. >> I I know you guys know what happened here as of now. >> Uh you wouldn't mind telling me what >> what happened. >> So this is all we know. My name um he came right here to the house. He was just freaking out and I was like, "What's going on?" And he's like, I was like, "Is there someone?" He was like, "Yeah, so I assumed it was." And I keep telling him, "Look, you have to turn yourself in. You have to turn yourself in. You have to turn yourself in." He wanted to go see his son, and I'm like, "F, please just turn yourself in." So then I guess he tried to go see his son, but >> what time was all this? >> I honestly don't know. I know. I looked and it was maybe like 8:30. >> I don't know what time is. Is it? >> I don't either. >> So an hour ago. >> Okay. So he went to go see his son. Tried to. They didn't let him cuz she also told him you need to go and turn yourself in. You cannot just keep doing this. So then he finally called me back and I was like father please tune yourself in. So then here we are. >> So what did he tell you specifically? >> I didn't even I honestly didn't even want to know how or what happened. He just said he blacked out and I don't want to know. I don't even want to know what happened. I >> I don't want to know. >> No, no, no. I'm not going to say it. Just But did he say like what happened to her or her condition? >> He just said he just said he blacked out. >> He blacked out. Something happened. >> Yeah. Yes. I don't know. >> Okay. >> I didn't want to know. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. But then okay. Anyways, >> I appreciate it. >> Yeah. Okay. Well, it's not too much to go with, but um it's something. You have an ID on you or anything? >> No. You guys aren't like anything like that. It's just >> No, I know. >> The situation is I'm going just leave it as it is. >> You need whatever you need to get. I don't I give you whatever you need. >> Um your nieces and nephew are going to need you, too. a lot >> or what? >> I know. >> I'm I'm so sorry. >> According to Fel's sister and mother, when he showed up at their apartment that morning, he was completely hysterical, barely able to form words or explain what he had done. When they asked if someone was dead, his panic only intensified. And when they said Vanessa's name, he broke down entirely, losing what little composure he had left. >> You think you'd need one? I think I'm just here together like me and my mom like separate. >> Okay. If you if you got your own or something, that's fine. I I'm just >> No. Yeah, I know. >> I'm It's not easy to go about these sort of things. I'm just We're just here to help you guys. Okay. >> Even though it might not always feel like it. >> No, I know. And I appreciate you so much. >> No problem. Just take your time. Then I threw it down here. I'm just not asking information about the uh children. It's both their kids. One of them is not and then one of them is for both. >> Okay, >> we'll get to that in a bit. >> Statements from his mother and sister made it clear that Farel did not call 911 immediately. At some point afterward, he had also removed the children from the apartment. Investigators would later learn that he had used a gray Ford Explorer rental vehicle throughout the morning. When officers secured the scene, that same rental was found parked directly outside the apartment. >> Well, I'm assuming it's hers because if you look, you got Newports >> kids uh lab or iPad. This is not in my bingo cards for today. Need a warrant to get in. Yeah. >> The vehicle rented in Vanessa's name was immediately treated as evidence, sealed, documented, and towed to the Castleberry Police Department under a search warrant. To better understand what had happened and to ensure the children's safety, officers needed answers directly from him. They approached the patrol vehicle, read him his Miranda rights, and began questioning. How you doing, man? [laughter] >> Are you for real? All right. My name is Detective Caruso. Okay. I want to talk to you a little bit of kind of what's going on today. All right. Is that okay right now? All right. Let me read you something. Okay. All right. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to an attorney present now or any time during questioning. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you without cost. Do you understand the rights I've read to you? >> You understand them? >> Yeah. [snorts] >> I'll take that. Yeah. Shaking your head. Um, what happened today, man? Tell me a little bit what's going on. I woke up. >> Okay. >> [laughter] >> She was getting ready. >> You said she was getting ready. >> Yes. For work. >> For work. >> And I told her [snorts] I told her good morning. [laughter] [snorts] She said she was mad. >> She was mad. >> Yeah. >> What was she mad about? Because the camera wasn't working. >> The You said the camera. >> Yeah. >> Which Which camera wasn't working? >> The room camera. >> The room camera. >> And that's What room is that? >> Is that the the the master bedroom or the main bedroom? [cough] >> The master bedroom. >> The master bedroom. Okay. [laughter] Okay. What What happened after that? You said good morning. She was Max's camera wasn't working. What time did you wake up this morning? [laughter] >> Around six. >> Around what time? >> Six. around six. [laughter] What time does she wake up? >> You don't know. [laughter] [snorts] Okay. So, she was mad about the camera. Is this something that happens often? The camera doesn't work. No. >> No. Okay. So, what happened? What' she do when she was mad? Did she yell at you? Did she scream at you? Did she just try talking to you about it? [snorts] [laughter] What's that? >> I don't want to talk about it. >> You don't want to talk about it. [laughter] I didn't mean to. >> You didn't mean to. [laughter] Hey, for real. Hey, for real. Can I call you for real? Is that [laughter] Take a couple breaths. Okay. You take a couple breaths. Big breaths for me. Okay. >> Okay. Just take a couple breaths. Big deep breaths. [laughter] I said to you, "Is it your girlfriend or your wife?" >> My girl, [laughter] >> what happened? Was there an argument or [laughter] what was the argument about? Anything like that? Was it one of those? >> What happened during the argument? >> I want to talk to an attorney. >> Okay. All right. For real. All right. [laughter] We'll get the the air condition stayed. It's on, right? Yeah, it's on. It's cool. All right. >> Fel provided some details, but when questioned directly about what happened to Vanessa, he broke down crying again. Sergeant Fields stepped in and tried a different approach. However, it did not work either. He ultimately demanded an attorney and questioning stopped there. As the investigation progressed, Vanessa's family began arriving at the scene. >> Okay. >> Is she okay? >> Unfortunately, um, your daughter's not deceased. Okay, let's sit down. Let's sit down. Let's sit down. Let's sit down. It's okay. Just sit down. Just sit down. Just sit down. JUST SIT DOWN. >> OKAY. >> You're okay. You're okay. I got it. >> Okay, just be all right. I'll be right. Hey, just squeeze my hand. Just squeeze my hand. Just squeeze my hand. It'll be okay. Just say >> Oh, God. Please, Lord. >> Lord, take me. Take me. Oh my god. Oh my god. >> I know. I know. >> You're okay. >> NO. >> PLEASE. JESUS. What happened? >> What happened? MOMMY NO >> school in the car. Mommy. >> Both of them. >> Okay. What happened? >> What happened? >> There was an IN BETWEEN BOTH. >> MOMMY. MOMMY. MOMMY. MOMMY. MOMMY. IT'S OKAY. >> All right. Mommy. Mommy, >> breathe. >> Oh my god. >> Mommy. >> Oh my god. >> Mom. >> Mom. >> Breathe. Please. Mommy, please breathe. >> Please breathe. >> I know. Mommy. >> Okay. Her name's Kimberly. >> What car is driving? Oh, >> she drives a Subaru. What color? It's like a navy blue. >> Okay. OKAY. >> Just Just stay with your family. Okay. I'll I'll tell you later. Just Just be with your family. Okay. >> Stay with mommy. Mommy. Here. Mommy. Stay here. Mommy. >> You'll know. You'll know soon enough. But just just wait. Just wait. Okay. >> Just wait. No, mommy. >> Why didn't she listen to me? >> No, mom. >> We all >> know. >> While Vanessa's mother and sisters were coming to terms with the reality of losing her, officers continued working to determine the children's whereabouts to ensure they were safe. They were eventually located unharmed at their daycare. and Vanessa's family later took them into their care. >> Hey bro. Hey, there's two children, right? Are they both your children or one both? >> Where where are they at? They're at the daycare, right? Where's the daycare at? >> Do you know the name of it at all? >> No. >> Okay. If you if we had to drive you over there, do you think you >> Let me look for it real quick. I'll be right back. Okay. If you can think of the name of it. >> Do you remember what like what's next to it? >> Give me one second. Let me grab a a different phone and I'll watch your knee. Okay. >> Stay there with me. Okay. >> You shouldn't jail. You shouldn't go to jail. But every time she kept dropping the charges and his family was going to press charges against him and everybody keeps dropping it against him. This is a history. his brother was doing the same thing. Like they're all it's in a family, but he's been doing this for a long time and we've been trying to get her away from him, but domestic violence is hard. >> Hi. >> Hi. How are you? Whoa, that shut hard. >> Um, [snorts] my name is Bill Nast. I work for Cassbury Police. >> Okay. >> There's a lady named >> and she has two kids named Trying to make sure they're here. >> They are here. >> They're here. They're safe. They're okay. >> They're safe. They're okay. >> Okay. >> Is she okay? >> No. >> Okay. >> But I just need They just need to be here for a couple hours. And does she normally come get him in the afternoon? >> She does after work. >> Okay, good. Um, >> don't give them to anybody. >> Nobody >> until another police officer comes back and talks to you. It's probably going to be a couple hours. >> Okay. >> I won't I won't leave you hanging too long. I promise somebody will come back. But in case anybody tries to come pick them up, just say not right now. >> Okay. >> And I can give you my cell phone number if you need it. >> Yep. >> And then I'll be able to come back and update you on the circumstances. >> Okay. >> Thank you. Mom is here. She's grandma. >> She can take them. >> And she can take them. >> Okay. >> And she's fixing to come in. >> Okay. >> So, thank you for helping us. >> So, she they're leaving now. >> I I think. But let's talk. Let's see what she wants to do. I think I think she I think she's going to pick him up. >> Okay. >> We know grandma. >> Yeah. >> Good. That makes me feel better. >> Yeah. No, she's nice. >> Hi. With the scene secured, the children located, and Fel identified as the primary suspect, investigators now needed to understand who he and Vanessa were and what had brought their relationship to this moment. As detectives gathered statements from both Vanessa's family and Fel's, a much fuller picture of their history together began to emerge. Their accounts revealed a troubled history that stretched back long before May 29th. Something many of the people closest to Farel and Vanessa would later confirm. 34year-old Vanessa was a mother of two living in a modest two-bedroom apartment just off State Road 436 and Winterwoods Boulevard in Castlebury, Florida. The lease was in her name, and she covered the rent herself. >> She was the sweetest person. She always tried to help people, help everyone. Um, a lot of the times I think she was more worried about hurting other people's feelings than her own. So, she kept a lot in. Um, there really just isn't really any words to describe what a great person she was. She was very caring. She had the biggest heart out of everyone. And the only things that she ever cared about was her kids and making sure that she could provide a life for them. Farel, her boyfriend, and the father of one of her children had been in a relationship with Vanessa that was steadily falling apart for quite some time. >> What is she saying about that? >> She said that, you know, he keeps harassing me. Um he keeps sending me pictures of him with other women even though they weren't together. He's just like he if I don't answer him, he harasses me. He'll call me from different numbers cuz I'll block him and he'll just find another way to get in contact with me >> and he just won't stop calling me telling me how worthless I am, how I'm never going to be amount to ever amount to anything, how I'm a bad mom, [clears throat] >> cuz she would just call me crying and you know, hindsight is 2020. I wish I recorded the conversations. But yeah, >> she would lie a lot but we all knew that they were together even though she would lie to us. Um there was um [snorts] the day after her birthday, I woke up in the morning and I went on Facebook and I saw that he hacked her Facebook saying that she had So as soon as I saw that, I took a screenshot of it and I sent it to my sister Kimberly. Um because Kimberly, like I knew the apartment complex, I didn't know which apartment exactly it was. So I sent it to Kimberly and then Kimy said, "I'll meet you over there." So when we went over there, her car wasn't there. She pulled up. When she pulled [clears throat] up, she said, "Oh, I don't I don't that was him. He's psycho." She would lie and tell us they weren't together. She was just trying to co-arent with him. And it just got to a point where we all knew and she was just going to lie to us anyway. So um so when that incident happened um she came back she was like I don't have um he took my phone um there was another time she called me. It was like 3:00 a.m. She called me and asked me to come over cuz he was there and wouldn't leave. Um and that's all she said. So as soon as she I hung up and I was just like you don't have to say anymore. I have one over there. And she he was laying in the bed. He was drunk. And she was like, "I've been telling him to leave. He won't leave." And I was like, "Um, and I was like, "Okay, I'll call the cops." I called the cops. And he was like, "I'll leave. I'll leave. I'll leave." And he got up and started packing stuff, but I stood on the phone and my sister grabbed the phone. She was just like, "It's fine. He's leaving. He's leaving. Don't worry about it. We'll call back at anything." April 13th. >> Yeah, that's the one. Okay. She's like, "I tell him all the time I don't want to be with him anymore. He just won't leave me alone." And that's when I told her, I was like, "Well, we can help you. We're here." And she's like, "I know. I know." And he also just would not leave her alone. >> Was that the last time you went to her house? >> Mhm. [clears throat] April 13th. >> Yeah. Okay. >> Farel had a history of physically hurting Vanessa and was known to be troublesome. He would also access her phone and social media accounts without permission. Despite repeated warnings from her family, she continued seeing him and kept the relationship hidden from her family. >> When did you see or when did she mention to you or anybody else that you know that things were happening between the two of them >> as far as >> Yeah. >> Um the very first time she told me of it was like late 2022. >> Okay. And um she told me that she went out with a friend and he just so happened to be at the bar, >> right? [clears throat] >> Um which now, you know, putting two and two together, they went there together. >> Um but she said they she saw him at the bar and she decided to leave and then he followed her out. Um, and then he basically pushed her face into her car window, like busted her lip and everything. That was the very first time that she told me anything like that. And then later on, she told the other girls about it. >> Okay. Do you remember what she was driving when that happened? 2022 the Cadillac. The >> Cadillac Cadillac. Yeah. You know, he's a narcissist. I feel like he just didn't want her to be happy and came back, manipulated her, and then she started to lie to us. And that's when the hacking of the phone started um [clears throat] supposedly, but obviously it's like you're hanging out with him. He's stealing your phone. >> The extended beyond the walls of that apartment. Vanessa had confided in close friends about what she was enduring. In recordings shared with investigators, she could be heard describing specific incidents in her own words. She had also posted a photo of her face alongside a shattered car window on social media, calling him out by name, but she deleted the post within minutes. Each time she tried to surface what was happening, she pulled back. She was afraid, and that fear kept her trapped. just at the short time that we were sitting there, I saw his and I don't want my cousin in that. So I told her, "Please, please, you know, don't be with this man." She called me from Puerto Rico. When I was in Puerto Rico, she called me crying. She [clears throat] said, "Mom, I just want to let you know that I lied about the car. Um, he took my head and bashed the window with my head. His thing was he would do something [clears throat] in rage and then he was sorry. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Sorry. And she would take him back. She said, "Mom, I love him. I feel sorry for him." I said, "You cannot help him. You can't help him." Okay. And that's not love. The love that that he has for you is not love. Okay? And this is a toxic relationship. You need to get help or any messages. I mean, she had bruises, you know, on her arms and her leg. That's why she would wear a lot of pants, but she would always give me an excuse. As time went on, the situation inside the home became more unstable. The conflict was no longer contained to the couple. The children were now exposed to Frell's behavior as well. recently, it was like uh two weeks ago. He told me, "Ma was on top of my mom to hit her and I took toys and I threw it at him and I said, "Oh my god." I said, "Um, did he hurt you too?" And he said, "Oh, mom, I ran. Mom, I ran real fast. He couldn't catch me cuz I run real fast, you know, and so do that. And then um the last weekend I said my daddy hit my mommy in the mouth. My puppy is my puppy. My puppy hit my mommy in the mouth and then um he said my daddy smokes, you know. So I knew he was at the house, you know. You know, she were lying to me. >> However, by the spring of 2024, Vanessa had reached a breaking point. She was tired of the relationship and the toll it was taking on her life. I made the mistake because he told me he wanted to talk and I was I was tipsy and I was upset and I made the mistake of going to his house and talking to him. And what did he do? He me again. He punched me in the stomach. He took my phone away from me to get me to shut up. He shut his cigarettes buds down my throat. That was my fault. That was my fault. I shouldn't have gone there. I made that mistake. I went there. Okay, I'll own up to it. I did that. He took my phone away from me and he wouldn't let me leave. So, I busted out his window and I came here, came back home. >> She ultimately told Farel that the relationship was over, making it clear she wanted him out of her apartment and out of her life. What Vanessa could not have known was just how violently Fel would respond to that decision. On the morning of May 29th, 2024, the situation escalated in the worst way imaginable, unfolding only steps away from her two children. With that context established, investigators now needed to determine exactly what had happened inside the apartment. And when when officers arrived at 9:09 a.m., the blood surrounding Vanessa's body had already dried, indicating the attack had occurred long before the 911 call was placed. It immediately suggested a substantial delay, not minutes, but potentially hours. Investigators then turned their focus to the critical question. What had Fel been doing during all that time? Investigators would go on to reconstruct the events through surveillance footage, phone data, and physical evidence, piecing together a timeline that clearly outlined what had happened. Vanessa's apartment was equipped with four surveillance cameras, including one in the bedroom. However, Farel had a pattern of deactivating the bedroom camera for reasons that were never clearly explained. >> And he also mentioned to me, >> he said to me, "Mom, um, mommy was mad because Farel took the cameras out and hit him on the bed." Some cameras that she had. >> When was this? I'm sorry. >> Huh? >> When did he say this? >> This past weekend. during the weekend as well. >> Okay. >> Did he hit the cameras on the bed? >> Okay. >> You know, so I had [laughter] questioned her and she told me, "Mom, I have cameras because this is what she told me and I have to ask the the apartment complex." She said that apartment complex send somebody in your home to make sure that your home is clean. I never heard of that before. To make sure that cleanness is that it's clean. So, she has cameras in there to make sure, you know, that while they in the home, they don't touch none of her stuff. That's what she told me. >> Mhm. [clears throat] >> But I don't think that's true. I think it was because of him. >> The to the cameras. >> Mhm. >> What do you mean by unplugging the cameras? >> He she had cameras in her house. >> Um, and he took them all down. So, we all visited after um what happened last Wednesday. Me and the other girls went to her mom's house on Friday and we were just all talking and so we're like we're explaining our side explaining their side and they're telling us how um Josiah her oldest son was saying oh mommy and were arguing because he took down the cameras. He was they were arguing over the cameras. >> Okay. >> So >> did they say what cameras or they >> the cameras inside the house? But would they say like specifically which ones at all or was it just just the cameras in general? >> All of the cameras. Apparently she had five cameras at her house. >> So he he took them down. >> Okay. >> On the morning of May 29th, at some point before the attack, he repositioned the cameras that would have captured him walking to the kitchen, then removed a knife from the drawer and brought it back to the bedroom. He then disabled the bedroom camera once again, this time removing the SD card entirely and concealing it under the bed along with a pair of scissors. But the remaining three stayed active, capturing a heated argument. >> Directly below you would be Is that correct? >> Yes. >> Okay. Um, were you home around like the 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. window? >> Yes. Yes. >> Okay. Um during that time, did you happen to hear anything out of the ordinary? >> Uh ordinary. Um the people down there, they fighting all the time. >> Okay. They usually fight. >> I I go Yes. I I think I go to the office uh twice to complain about the noise. >> Okay. Do you know around what time that was? >> Uh around 7. >> 7 in the morning. >> Around 7 in the morning. Yes. Yes. >> Okay. And did you hear any yelling or any um anything from the male half? >> No, just she's crying. So I I I heard like some noise like usual. Okay. When you say noise like usual, what would be like usual for for I guess them? >> They arguing. Uh they clock doors. They flash stuff like that. >> Vanessa was angry at Farel, making it clear the relationship was over. Farel, in a fit of rage, reached under the mattress, grabbed the knife, and attacked her. He stabbed her and drove the knife into the right side of her face. That is where the knife remained when officers arrived hours later. What made this even more disturbing was what one of the children had witnessed. The 5-year-old had walked into the bedroom while the attack was still happening. He stood there and watched. Farel told him to leave and shut the door behind him. After the murder, Farel got both children dressed and drove them to school. >> Process of the sign in and what exactly happened yesterday. So when when he came he's on the doorbell. >> Mhm. >> I opened the door and I said you need to sign in. That's a normal procedure that we do over here. So he came and the first thing he said I don't have the code. I said can you call mom because we need to make sure about that. He took the phone and he told me I tried to call her and she don't answer. And I said, "Okay, let me see the time." I look the time. It was 7:10. And I say, "Okay, I will take the kid." The director and the secretary, they're going to sign for for the kid, you know, sign him. And they say, "But I don't know if he will I will come to pick it up or not." That's why he say, "Okay, no problem." I I left. >> Mhm. >> But then try to figure out everything yesterday. What another conversation >> say? He say something about the mom wasn't there. >> So he need to bring the kid to the school. >> That's why like she was not there. That's why he need to bring it. >> Did you mention where she could have been? >> Nothing. Nothing. The only one he never give me eye contact. I don't know. And then when I said the kid come in, he talked to the little kid, the the kid that belonged to him >> and he say, "Be good. Be good." >> And the kid went inside. >> Mhm. >> So that was the last conversation that we having yesterday. >> Okay. He didn't say anything to the other child. >> No, not to the other child. Zero conversation with the the other one. didn't say anything that was concerning to the kids or to you. >> Nothing to me concerning. The only one when I asked can you call her? >> Yeah. >> That's why he took the phone and he say I tried to call her but she do not answer. >> Okay. Did he try to call her or he just said it? >> He only say he only said immediately. >> Okay. Interesting. Okay. Um how are the kids? >> They came normal. >> Okay. Nothing >> like like nothing happened. >> What was his demeanor like yesterday? >> How did he how did he look? Did he look >> No. He have a hair up. >> Okay. >> With a hat, Boo hat. >> I know that he have a two big earring black with a cross. >> Mhm. >> And tattoo on it. >> Mhm. >> He don't That's what I was telling Mr. Elizabeth. I don't see he dirty. know with nothing blood or something because I know it maybe he do early the blood maybe with gush or something because the head is more part they have a vein >> but I don't see nothing the only one he don't talk to me he don't look at me I'm sorry he don't look at me he move his cell phone like I was nervous >> that's what I I recognize it now I pay attention thinking all the movement he did it he He was nervous. >> He went nervous. >> Okay. >> Then he drove back to the apartment where Vanessa was still on the floor. But he did not call 911 just yet. Instead, he went through her phone, opened her accounts, copied her credit card information, and transferred money from her bank account into his own. These actions were later confirmed through forensic analysis. He then left again and went to his mother's home around 8:30 a.m. >> From what he told me, everything he just blacked out. >> I don't even want to know what happened. I don't want to know anything. Black. >> Okay. Does mom live here? >> No. >> No. Okay. Who lives any relationship? >> We don't have any family here. >> So, how did you make it here? because F told me I don't know if you guys Do you guys know anything that happened? >> I know bits and pieces. Yeah, we're trying to puzzle piece everything. That's why. >> Okay, so [snorts] he ended up going to the house and he's freaking out crying and what's going on? And my mom's there and the way he's like freaking out. I'm like I don't whatever it is like don't even say it in front of mom. So, I like told him to go to the back outside in the backyard. >> I'm sorry to interrupt you. Around what time was this? >> Uh, I think it was maybe like 8 8:30. >> 8:30. >> How far do you guys live from here? >> Not far at all. What's going on? Like, cuz you hurt somebody. Like, kill her and he just starts freaking out even more. So, at this point, he didn't really confirm anything or say anything, but obviously I'm like, "Fine, please turn yourself in. Please like, girl, call like she's there. Like, you can't do this." He tries to call Amanda and Amanda's like, "No." And Amanda's calling me and I'm like, "Don't like he needs to turn himself in." And he like finally told her what he did. She's like, "You cannot come over here." He's like, "You have to call." >> Okay. >> So, Amanda is aware of what happened as well. So, >> so is he and Amanda's child is is he older than? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, did he say anything specific to you as far as what he did or didn't do? He just started freaking out. >> Okay. >> I did not I said, "I don't want to know. Do not tell me." And he couldn't even >> I couldn't get it out. Did Amanda tell you what she had she had heard? >> I don't think she knows either. >> Okay. Okay. >> I don't think she's aware of what even happened. >> Oh, okay. So, she just knows that he was kind of freaking out as well. >> No, she knows. She knows that like she's not here no more. >> Okay. >> But like [laughter] doesn't know why. >> Sorry to interrupt. What was he wearing? >> Um, black, I think. >> All black. All black. >> A black shirt, black hat. I think >> like t-shirt long >> like a t-shirt kind of like this but black. >> Okay, cool. Um, any other details? >> A black hat, I think. >> Mhm. [clears throat] >> Did it have anything on the hat? Some type of design. >> I can't remember. >> I don't. >> Uh, what was he driving? >> Ren. It's a rental. What car? What color is it? >> I think it's a Kia. >> I think it's a Kia. What color? >> Okay. Thank you. >> Okay. He had been saying he wanted to go see his other son. Okay. And he was trying to get a hold of Samantha and she was saying no. I'm sorry. [clears throat] Amanda. Um and she was saying no. >> Yeah. Once he told her what happened, she's like, "You cannot come over. You need to call." >> Okay. >> And then that's when we start heading back over here. >> Okay. >> And he called me like, "You have to turn yourself in. You cannot. This is not okay." >> Yeah. Okay. All right. Um and as far as the [clears throat] extent of cuz you said you you I've been telling her um or telling him to to kind of like separate himself from her, right? >> Yeah. I've been telling both of them like just get away from each other. >> Okay. >> Toxic. >> What kind of stuff do they argue about? >> I don't know. [clears throat] I think they I think he's like just jealous and I don't know. I really don't know who he wants to. >> Okay. I just this I don't know about it was about 8 I'm not sure it was 8 on or 8:30 around the he came home I was just telling him mom I'm sorry for what everything [laughter] that I do to you I'm sorry he just said I'm sorry I'm sorry he didn't tell me what happened I just feel I just feel like any sit down. Mom, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. >> Okay. So, he came over to your other son's house, right? Okay. Do you do you know like the address where that was? >> Where I'm living now? That's where I'm But I don't know because my sister my daughter know. >> Okay. That's Orlando though. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So he went over around 8 8:30 >> around there I think. Yeah. >> Okay. And then he he was just upset already. >> Yeah. He was just like but he didn't want to tell me. He didn't tell me. He just acting like he was he wasn't himself like he was. >> He just said I'm sorry. I'm sorry. >> Okay. Did you ask any questions about what happened? >> Yeah. tell what happened and tell no mama I'm never going to come back. I'm never going to come back. And that's the only thing I'm going to say. Why? Why you not going to come back? Why you didn't tell me? >> Um do you know if there's any history between him and >> always arguing and just fighting each other always. >> Okay. When you say fighting in what way? What do you mean? pushing and and and and like cursing each other and a lot of >> crazy stuff. >> Was it him pushing her or her? >> Both of them. >> Both. >> Yeah, they always like that. But then they come back again. >> Okay. >> While at his family's apartment, Fel also reached out to his aranged wife, Amanda. Though the two had separated, they remained legally married and shared a child together. Over the course of two phone calls, Farel told Amanda he had done something there was no coming back from, but initially refused to say what. It wasn't until she pressed him that he finally told the truth. >> He actually want to come over here and see him, which I was like, >> okay. Yeah. >> Not okay with. >> When was that? >> That was this morning. >> Okay. Did he call you? He came. He actually did call. >> No, he did not come over. >> Uh he called me. >> Okay. >> Like repeatedly, but he's always doing that. repeatedly calling me, telling me to pick up cuz he's always asking me for money and stuff. He's >> Do you mind if we take a picture of our call? >> Yeah. And like my call log? >> Yeah. Like your from your phone? >> Okay. So, I have him saved as idiot. It's okay. [laughter] That's okay. >> I'm really The first call was at 79. Okay. >> And then >> I can hold on. I can do that so you can see the number. >> Perfect. Yes. >> So that people know who idiot is. >> Okay. And then scroll up, you said. >> Yeah. So there's the >> 719. >> 719. >> Um and then I declined him at 8:07. I answered at 8:09 and that's when I talked for 8 minutes. That's when he kept kind of giving me the runaround. >> Mhm. >> Okay. >> Talking really weird. >> Okay. So we'll actually take a look at the 8 minutes. I want to get a picture of that as well. >> The 8 minute phone call. This >> And that was him calling you, correct? Um, incoming call. Yes. >> Is that where he actually spoke to you about? >> Yeah. >> Oh, no, no, no. He He was He didn't He kept telling me I can't say it on the phone. I'm like, "What are you talking about?" I was like, >> you know? >> Okay. >> I I I think people that say that are so stupid, but like what are you talking about? You can't say what on the phone. Like, he kept on saying that, but he kept telling >> and he he he did something there was no coming back from and he couldn't tell me on the phone. >> Okay. This is when I called his sister because I wanted to know cuz he wouldn't tell me and I wanted to know if she knew cuz [clears throat] he wanted to come here to see my son and he kept telling me I can't tell you over the phone >> and so I'm worried about my son's safety. Forel did not >> know where we were. So I wanted to call his sister. His sister has the address here and I wanted to call her like hey >> is this safe being Victoria. >> Victoria. Yeah it's Victoria. >> So I I just called her. Okay. Um and then >> [snorts] >> This is um incoming call. This is when we spoke for 15 minutes because of what Victoria said. >> Vicki said um as soon as she answered, she said, "I know. He just needs to turn himself in." And as soon as she said that, I'm like, "What the I don't know. >> I cursed. I'm so sorry." I'm like, "What? What the What are you talking about? He just needs to turn himself in. What the happened?" Mhm. >> And then um she was like, "If you'll know soon enough, but I don't want to tell you if he hasn't told you." So then that's when I um that's when I spoke to him for 15 minutes. And I was trying to piece out what was going on. So I was asking him, I said, "Where are the kids?" Mhm. >> So the kids are in school. I said, "Okay, kids are in school. Cool." >> And he didn't answer me. I said, "Where's at work? Where's Vanessa?" And he would answer me. So, I was piecing things together in my head, you know. >> So, [snorts] um, >> do you have a relationship with stuff or did you >> I not a good one. Not a good one to be honest. Forel, he told me what happened. Um, which I'll tell you. And then and then it it ended. I was like, you need you need to call 911. You need to call Why are you calling me? Why are you I was like, I can't let you come here. I'm sorry. And I want you to know it's not I didn't want to like because someone that's on the edge like that like I didn't know what he was capable of at that point. So I'm like listen it's has nothing to do with you. You I cannot let you come to this house. >> Okay. >> Was it a concern for your safety or is it a concern for his own safety? >> A concern for my son's safety and his safety because as far as after I found out what he told me what what happened. Sorry the phone's blinking. That's okay. um my mind is spinning and I'm like I can't let you come here because at first I was before I knew I I just saw like what DUI or something you know or they got into a fight you know it was that happens common that's common in their relationship so I'm like it was common in our relationship so that's why I didn't really want any problems here so I'm like listen I'll let you come here and see your kid but you got to stay outside because we have cameras outside so I wanted him to be outside on camera >> right >> um because he has done things before like when at my mom's house where he showed up drunk and you know kind of bered my son um just belligerent something like that so I didn't really know his state after I found out what happened I was like listen I cannot let you come here I know you want to see your son and I think it's >> I'm sorry his train of thought is so >> like who wants to say they're good who does that why are you running around trying to say your goodbyes. I'm like, can you just call 911? >> Get in there. And and that's when he told me she wasn't breathing. I said, "You don't know that. You don't know that." And I don't know their address. And all I kept telling him is, "You don't know that. Sometimes it looks like somebody's not breathing, but they are. You I need you to go back." Cuz he wasn't at the apartment. >> Mhm. >> He was like, "I can't go back in." I'm like, "You have to go back in." >> Do you know where he was at that point? >> I don't know. >> Okay. >> I don't know. He said he um there was a rental car. >> Okay. >> I don't know how much he told you guys. I I I on >> it was a rental car >> on honestly to I am praying to God that he told you guys the honest truth. >> Mhm. >> Because I'm going to tell you guys whatever he told me. So if he told the truth so much, you know what I mean? And like that's >> I don't know. just a lot of things are going through my head because like I feel so bad for her and I also in the same sense feel like I could have been me because we were >> married for so many years and we had so many problems. So it's like and and I feel selfish even saying that like my mind is just >> Was it physical between you guys as well? >> Oh yeah. >> Yeah. >> To what to what extent was it physical like pushing, shoving, punching? >> Our relationship. >> Oh um it's a it depends. I mean, it started we were [sighs] we're still legally married, but we've been separated for over 7 years. >> Um, the only reason why we are not like legally divorced is because I can't afford the $500 filing fee. >> It's expensive. So, but it is on the agenda that, you know, my boyfriend of course wants to get married. So, it's like we want to get this done. He wanted to get married to you, you know, >> or so we thought. >> Were you aware of any issues between he and leading up to this? >> I was. Okay. years ago before she had and I think that we crossed paths and this was kind of like Ephra's always been a cheater. Okay. He always and he cheated on me a lot and I believe that was one of the girls. So I think I had some words with her at his parents house. >> Okay. >> Like maybe you know I may have called her which I feel horrible now. I may have called her like a whatever you know stupid girl. You know what I mean? Amanda urged Farel to return to the apartment, telling him that Vanessa might still be alive and that he needed to go back and check on her. She even told him to perform CPR if she wasn't breathing, holding on to the hope that it wasn't too late. But what Amanda didn't know was that there was nothing left to check on. Farel had already made certain of that. >> Going back to today in the morning, >> um he called about about trying to see him. >> Mhm. >> Right. And what happened after that? >> Um, I kept I can I know I kept asking him why and he kept telling me he couldn't tell me. And that's when um I started to get frustrated and I was going to let him come over and just see him outside. And then that's when I called Vic. And as soon as Vic said, you know, he needs to turn himself in. That to me sounded like it was a little bit serious, you know. So then that's when I called him back and I was like, "No." >> Did she say any details? >> No. I said, "What happened?" >> I said, "What happened?" and and she said, "If he hasn't told you, you know, I'm not going to tell you. You'll find out soon enough." And I'm like, >> "Screw that. Find out soon enough. What the hell is going on?" >> So, and then um and then I spoke with him on the phone and >> during the 15-minute conversation. >> This was a long conversation. That's when I started asking that's when I started trying to like, you know, I'm not a tech, but >> you know, figure out like, "Okay, where are the kids?" You know, and then I'm like, "Where's NASA?" And as soon as he was quiet, I was like, "Where's NASA at work?" He's like, "No." Um, and he said that they got his wife. And I was like, "Okay." Um, and and what happened? Huh? I don't know. I don't know about what. >> He didn't say about what. >> Um, and he he killed her. >> And I said, "Are you sure?" Like, "How do you know? Like, did she hit her head? Like, what?" I don't want to know like the details, but I want to know like how do you how are you sure? cuz you can think maybe somebody's just unconscious, you know. >> So I'm like, are you sure what happened? You know, whatever. Was was there a weapon? You know, what happened? And he said yes. And I was like, what kind of weapon? And he said that he stabbed her. I didn't ask how many times. I didn't ask where. Um and I was like, "Well, you need to call 911. You need to call 911 now. Now, now now." And he had told me that he wasn't in the apartment. So, where the are you? Get back [clears throat] to you. Like he he left her there. >> Yeah. >> I'm just all right. It's okay. >> I just can't. >> I was like, you have to go back in. You have to make sure. He's like, she's not breathing. And I'm like, you don't know that. Like, sometimes they can breathe really like you can't even tell. Like sometimes it's very very Maybe it's like a shallow breathing. And if she's not breathing, you need to breathe for her. call 911 and do CPR. That that's like all I was trying to tell him. >> Mhm. >> And he was [gasps] I mean he he told me he told me that he loved her and I said, "I know you love her. I know you love her." But he but it was weird because he said, "I loved her." And I'm like >> Mhm. >> You know what I mean? >> Did Did he say he loved her before or after he told you what he had done? [sighs and gasps] >> I don't know. >> Okay. around around the same time because he he was crying and emotionally. He's like he's like I loved her and I told him I said I know I know you I know you do >> but >> you know you need to help her. >> Mhm. >> He had told me that she was on the bed. I don't know where she really was. If if he was telling me the truth or whatever. I don't know. I don't know where they live. I don't have their address. I mean I even called my boyfriend afterwards. Like what do I do? Like I do I trust that he calls 911. You know what I mean? And that's why I called his sister to like see if they could make sure. >> Okay. >> Can I ask why you didn't call 911? >> I don't know where they live. >> Okay. Okay. >> I don't have their address at all. >> Mhm. 15-inute call. >> He said an hour to 2 hours it had been. >> Okay. So, that 15-minute call happened around 8:43 a.m. So, you're saying about an hour and a half to 2 hours before that is when they had their argument? I don't know if it was an hour and a half to two hours before he called me that first time at seven though. >> Okay. >> Because he started calling me at seven and he was already hysterical. Like he was hysterical. >> Okay. >> So I'm assuming it was done. >> Okay. Gotcha. >> So then when I asked him, you know, how long has she been like that? How long has she been not breathing? >> Um >> he said like an hour or two. And I'm like I'm like well you still got to try. You still got to call 911. You still got to try. And he's like I can't go in there. I'm like, "You h you have to." >> Mhm. >> We We were very toxic. Very toxic. Which I think is what they were as well, you know? >> Okay. >> I can't You know what I mean? She passed >> unfortunately. Yes. Yeah. >> I mean, I figured I figured, but you know, like you hear like survival stories. You hear like people pull through like crazy things. >> He's he was always like jealous like a jealous guy. >> Okay. [snorts and clears throat] you know, looking through phones and stuff like that. So, I don't know if that's what led up to it. I don't I don't know. But whatever it was, it was stupid. >> Mhm. >> Okay. >> I don't know. I don't know how much help I am that I >> No, you've been so bad. >> You've been a lot of help. We do appreciate you taking the time. >> Right. >> Cuz he's always had a problem holding down a job. Always had a problem with alcohol. Always had a problem with going out. always had a problem with women. You know what I mean? Just like >> too. He's kind of getting his life on track. >> Yeah. But he always lived his life like he was a 19-year-old. >> So, no. >> That's okay. [snorts] >> I'm so cried out. [gasps and sighs] So, he's always had a problem like no responsibilities for everything. Like if you ask him what his son's diagnosis is, he can't tell you >> what it is because he doesn't know. He's not involved. He can't even see his son in overnight visits because he wouldn't know how to take care of his equipment. So, he's just like that, like a teenager. >> Mhm. >> But it seemed like he was getting his life back on track. You know, he was living. >> I knew that they their their relationship wasn't perfect, but if they moved in together, I'm thinking, okay, you know, >> the call to Amanda was not his last. He continued reaching out to other family members. And only after all of it, the school drop off, the financial transfers, the visits, and the calls, did Farel finally dial 911. During their statements, both Farel's family and Amanda confirmed that Farel had been using the same gray Ford Explorer rental vehicle that officers had earlier found parked outside Vanessa's apartment. Investigators also uncovered a troubling detail about why the rental existed in the first place. Farel had previously tampered with Vanessa's personal vehicle, leaving it unusable and forcing her to depend on the rental instead. >> I know there was a thing with her car cuz she was asking about in the roof trash. She was like, "Does the front office have cameras?" Cuz I think somebody did something to the car. Like I can't believe somebody would do that. But we all knew it was him that did it. >> He did something to the car. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> What's Did she say what was the issue? When she took it to the mechanic, they told her that somebody poured like sugar in her tank. >> Okay. >> Sugar is some kind of substance in the tank. >> So she had gotten a rental car because of that issue. Correct. >> Yes. Yes. >> Was there anything that happened with the rental car and the other cars? >> Um, so then she was crying because she said she woke up and somebody scratched the car, the rental car, and she's like she doesn't know what she's going to do. She doesn't have the money. um to pay to get it fixed if anything would happen to it. Um so, you know, we told her, you know, buy scratch off and stuff like that, but then she sent a picture of the scratch and I'm just like, uh the scratch looks like somebody purposely scratched it. Um, so she said that when it was something and she was just like, you know, and I know you guys don't like Forel, but you know, he's been really helping a lot and he was outside all day painting the car to cover up the scratch. But then we're just like, well, of course he painted, he did it. But and there was like a few instances where we confronted her and just like you know I can't I told her personally I was like listen if you chose to be with him that's fine but I'm telling you as a friend I can't support this decision. >> I'll always be here for you but if you continue down this path with him I cannot support you in this decision. You need to be [clears throat] safe. You and the boys need to be safe. and she pretty much came out and she said, "Oh, she's never going to be with somebody who would ever treat her like that again. It's strictly a co-arenting relationship." >> When was that? >> Uh, it's a few months ago. >> That same vehicle would then be used by Farel as he moved through the aftermath of the crime. Inside the Ford Explorer, investigators recovered Fel's personal belongings along with Vanessa's items and several belongings belonging to the children. Back at the scene, investigators conducted a thorough forensic collection from Fel himself. His clothing was removed and taken into evidence. Blood swabs were taken from multiple specific points on both hands, including his right index finger, where a suspected cut was observed. The inside of his right middle finger, his left palm, and his left little fingernail bed. Fingernail scrapings were also collected from both hands for further laboratory analysis. I got it. >> Your head. >> That's fine. I'm sorry. You can you can put them back. >> Yeah, you put them back on. Thank you. One more time for me. Thank you very much. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Oh my god. Flip your hands back over. Happy wearing gloves. >> Yes. >> I'm going to scrape underneath your fingernails. Okay. You just hold this under his right hand. And obviously if I hurt you, please let me know. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Same thing to the other hand. There we go. Perfect. Mhm. Okay. Hey, turn around. Turn around. Keep your hands right here. Turn around. See how the light shackles out? >> Yeah. Nice and slow. >> That's good. I got you. >> All right. Double lock now. Okay. >> Stay in too tight. >> Okay. >> Now it does. >> Despite whatever happened here, I still got to treat you with that respect. >> So now we're going to keep uh >> are we going to put it back in my car? >> Yeah. Hey. >> Hey. Do they need >> We're putting back in the car. Okay. >> Do they need him for anything else? >> I know they need his clothes, but like right now. >> Okay.
