my name is Julian Rodriguez um I've been a part of Coral Springs PD coming up on four years now in October it'll be just about 3 years in this position as a traffic accident investigator I was a police explorer for the City of Coral springs for a couple of years and when I turned 18 I was you know speaking of my advisor I was like Hey listen you know um I'm 18 now are there any positions within the agency that I can work for you know make some money while I was in high school um or at least coming into college at that time so speaking with them they introduced me into parking enforcement which I did for about I want to say 9 months-ish um I did that and then um speaking with the acent investigators at that time you know just small little questions how do you like it what is it exactly that you guys do it was something that interested me and then that's when I went ahead and asked my supervisor if I can you know just go ahead and push myself through that way Zula 91 show me going out with a signal 4 it's going to be sample on Rock Island westbound just east of so actually we just drove by a crash actually this one looks like it has a police officer involved we're going to see if it's one of our guys whether it's um you know a different agency but you know it's a simple rear end these tend to usually go pretty quick and let's see what we have here hello how you doing all righty so being that we're in the middle of Sample Road um it's not the most ideal position to take a crash report so what we're going to do is we're going to go ahead and move into the parking lot right across the street at Wawa that way I have a little more room you know um more officer safety in that aspect as well to do what I have to do how's it going sir perfect thank you all righty now that we are soaked we are going to dry my hands with my handy dandy towel all right so now what we're going to do is we're going to go on our what's called two channel it's our information Channel um every agency has their Channel where they you know get information on drivers Vehicles so ours is typically the two channels so we're going to go ahead and switch over Zulu 9192 and what we're going to do is we're going to run the registration run the license make sure you know the vehicle's valid the vehicle's not stolen you know make sure the driver is valid they have a valid license it's not expired um they don't come out with any warrants out of any other state if they do technically we' have another officer respond a sworn officer because I am a civilian um so we'll have that sworn officer respond and then we'll go through that process all righty so typical job duties that we do as a traffic accident investigator just to put it in a broad perspective we're essentially a Police Service a so we do anything from any traffic related call whether that's um a broken down vehicle traffic crash uh intersection lights are out parking calls we do anything that's traffic related that's our primary job function however in addition to that we do also um perform different tasks so we'll do animal calls um yeah we do have the unit but you know sometimes they're not always available so we'll handle those for them all right so now we're rolling up on a simple Bender Bender parking lot crash um with these you know I'm still going to ask is everybody okay are there any injuries cuz the last thing we want is somebody to be injured we didn't ask and now they're not getting the help that they need hello sir how's it going any injuries where's your car it's right there he parked it right there the Forte the for typically with these types of crashes um in in reality a lot of my crashes once a driver at least one of the drivers tells me their side of the story I can typically gauge and depending on the damage I can typically gauge as to who Ready's going to be at fault so in this instance we had the first driver we spoke to um we had them advise that they were backing out so anytime you're in a parking lot you guys have to be cautious when you're backing out because these other driver he was going south through the parking lot which gives him the right of way he does not have to yield to any traffic until he has a stop sign um so with this one unfortunately this white Acura is going to be deemed most likely as fault because she was just backing I get and I understand that she said she was going slowly and she was careful but unfortunately it's just the nature of traffic law um so we're going to have to put her at fault or section one in today's crash this going to be the information you gave me which is your license and registration okay at the top you're going to see a highlighted number all right so let's say you are involved in you know just a small little whether it's parking lot or on the road just a small little fender bender where nobody's injured you're able to move the car over you guys can go ahead and contact the non-emergency line that number is going to be 954 34418 that's going to be a direct line to our dispatch that's upstairs at the police department they'll get that car right away and send the closest and quickest officer to you right away typically throughout our our workday you know if it's slow or we're not really doing much we'll tend to go through parking lots um and we'll check for handicap violations um yes it's a big deal because there are handicap um people who need these spots to get to the businesses um in a short uh short distance um so I like to enforce them so this one actually does not have a placard so now what we're going to do is we're going to grab this handy dandy ticket book and we're going to write this vehicle citation and just so you guys know a handicap ticket is $257 so don't park there without a Placer we're going to go ahead and put this on the wiper call it yes sir is this your car yeah do you have a blackard yes sir okay well this is already written so you're going to take that with your Placer to the department and they'll take throw throw it away for you okay yeah but you know next time you should come out and take a look where's the placard right here it is not my responsibility to look inside of a vehicle okay so that's your Citation for it take that and your placard to Department with your driver's license and they'll take care of it dep corl Springs Police Department or the one over there on corl Springs Drive yes sir yeah but do yourself a favor I mean listen to me you're going to be you could be in the same situation one day okay I know it's my responsibility right but you may be there may be a reason why you forget to put it in okay so is if I was giving out a ticket you just roll up or did you come to the car I did okay so you could take a look I looked at it's supposed to be hanging from your rearview okay take your citation in the pler to the agency and they'll take care of it have a great day sir take care so more often than not we tend to get you know these type of people who you know just like to be argumentative uh for a lack of better terms this guy stated he had a placard however um if you're parked in a handicapped spot you are supposed to put it up on your rearview once it's parked um he did not it's not my responsibility to go digging looking inside of his vehicle from the window to find one he's supposed to have it hung up as a result of that he was issued a citation but all he has to do take it to the Coral Springs Police Department with a copy of his valid driver's license and they will help him to take care the citation so now we are rolling up on a disabled vehicle typically what we do with these is if the car will go neutral we'll go the extra mile and push it out of the way so that they're not just stuck in the middle of the road especially Sample Road not the best time or road to be stuck on the middle of the roadway um so what we're going to do here is try and push it into that uh McDonald's Plaza so it's out of the way and then they can um call toe for whatever they need however if it doesn't go into neutral we're just going to have to sit by it and we're going to have to call her to ourselves and get it out of the roadway you can I go into neutral hold on that's I want perfect hang tight I'm going to start pushing you all right okay so now when we push a car at that distance it can get very tiring my legs are shot let's go enjoy the AC all righty so that there was a disabled vehicle happens quite often um in this instance he said his battery died so I guess the car just shut off on him wouldn't turned back on so what we did is we just went ahead and pushed him into the nearest parking lot um that way he's out of the roadway he's not a traffic Hazard and then whatever the issu is with the car he's just going to have to deal with on his personal time now we're actually on our way to a second disabled vehicle call um this one's going to be down on Rivers side which is we're actually pretty nearby and Royal Palm so we're going to see what her issue is I don't mind sacrificing a leg workout I'll put you right in the parking lot okay all righty so that was our second vehicle push of the day we're on a roll here um in this situation um I guess she just went out of gas she was on on her way to the gas station right here off of um Riverside in Sample she just missed it by a mile um but you know it happens to the best of us so we were able to get her into the Walgreens parking lot in which she'll call whoever she has to to help her get some guests that's that
