Hi guys, I'm firefighter paramedic Claire Blake and welcome to What's on the Truck Tuesday. Today we're going to be talking about our SAM splints. We have an 18inch SAM splint which is normally used on a patient's arm and we have a 36-in SAM splint which is normally used on a patient's leg. They are a waterproof um material so we can actually use them in inclement weather. They are also moldable to the patient's injury, so we don't have to bring the injury to the splint and we can actually cut them to size. So, with the help of Lieutenant Banaker here, I'm going to show you guys how we would actually use a SAM splint on a patient's arm. So, now if he had an injury to his wrist, what we can do is take the mold and we can wrap it around his fingers. I'll let him know to rest his fingers down on here. And we can actually take this part and fold it down to where we need on the injury. So then we're going to take our AE wrap and we would actually splint above and below where the injury starts. Making sure we have enough cling to keep it stabilized and to make sure that we're not cutting off the his circulation. So now we would leave it like this. Make sure that the patient is in a position of comfort. And we would leave it splinted like this till we get them to the hospital so that the doctor could evaluate them, get the x-rays that they need and get treated from there.
