On May 22nd, 2025, a 26-year-old named Garrett was working on a fishing charter when a hooked bull shark broke a fishing rod. According to the warrant, Garrett responded by repeatedly stabbing the shark. A Snapchat video briefly circulated the internet showing the suspect stabbing the shark three or four times with a fillet knife, leaving the shark bleeding excessively in the water. Officers used the video as evidence along with surveillance footage taken at the marina to ID the suspect. The day before the arrest, the officer called Garrett, who agreed that stabbing sharks is a common practice to prevent them from stealing fish on charter boats. Garrett initially denied stabbing any sharks, but after being shown the Snapchat, he admitted to being the individual in the video. Garrett later claimed that stabbing a shark in the head does not deter them from stealing fish and that it's stabbing the liver that works as a deterrent. When asked why he stabbed the shark, knowing it doesn't deter them, he admitted it was more for revenge. What's going on? >> How you doing, Zayn? >> Good. How's it going? >> All right. All right. You got a minute? >> Yeah. >> Sweet. Um, basically, um, I got a warrant out for your arrest for aggravated felony animal cruelty. Um, I basically took the video. I brought everything up to the state attorney's office. The state attorney's office pretty much said, "That's animal cruelty, and so I have an arrest for you." So, don't reach into your pockets. Leave your hands right where they are. Chill out. Take a deep breath. Just take a deep breath. Relax. All right. You got any knives on you? >> All right. Good deal. Sounds good. So, Joey's going to go ahead and put you in handcuffs. Go ahead and turn around. Put your hands behind your back. >> There you go. >> And we'll go ahead and make sure we tell you everything on the way over there. All right. >> All right. >> He's going to search you, do all that good stuff. I'll be able to answer all your questions. Hey, call this number for me, Taylor. Come here. >> What' you say? >> This number for me. >> What do you want me to tell him? >> Tell him. I guess I'm going to jail. >> Yeah, that would be a good thing to do if you want to work on calling a bondsman. >> The bonds is uh $10,000. That's it. So, >> call Dan. There you go. Come here. >> Call Dan here. >> Hey. >> All right. You want to search? >> I'm going to jail. We're going to search you right now. Okay. So, that's fine. I got something about shark going to jail. >> I need um I guess I call Dan real quick. You can call >> I'll call Dan. I got a number. >> Yeah. >> Are you Gerald? >> No, sir. >> No. Were you Who did you just run a charter? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Okay. >> I'm just a freelance guy. >> Got it. Who is your mate, >> man? >> On this last charter that you just went on. >> Me? >> I'm the mate. >> You're the mate? >> Yeah. >> Do you have your captain's license? You got your captain's license? >> Obviously, we we all we all know you don't have your ticket. >> Yeah. >> You call yourself captain, but you're not the captain, but you drive the boat, but you don't have your your seat time yet? >> Yeah, I have my seat time. I have everything. I just sent the paperwork in. >> Oh, okay. >> I'm sending in now. >> Well, check it out. Just for formalities. All right. >> Yeah, let me call D. >> Formalities. >> I'll save your number. >> You got him. You're okay with him holding on to your phone? >> Yeah, >> sounds good. Guess what? You can go away now. You're good. >> Let me just get his password. >> You're good, right? >> Or you can call the number on the sound. >> Hey, your keys. Do you want to keep your keys or you want them with you? >> There you go. >> You guys have a good day. Sorry. >> So, formalities. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used you against you in a court of law. You have the right to a lawyer >> to talk and have him or present while you are being questioned. But I'm not going to be questioning you. Um, if you can't afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed even before any questioning. If you wish, if you consent to answer questions now without a lawyer present, you will still have the right to stop answering at any time. Do you understand these rights? >> Yeah. Can I tell him I'm not a collect for this trip real quick? >> Nope. Unfortunately not. We're going to have to take care of business. Yep. Just is what it is. But you'll be able to handle everything later. All right. So, we're gonna go ahead take a walk over here to the cage. >> Hey, just tell Dan I got the cash. He'll get me out. All right. >> I got everything behind me, too. >> What do you mean? >> Yeah. Short trip, man. >> All right. So, just look to your left. All right. >> Sure. >> Other way. Other way. Your left. >> Oh, my bad. >> All good. >> My bad, man. >> All right. Thanks. Yeah, short trait, man. Just stop. >> What is he charged with? >> Uh, felony animal cruelty. >> Gotcha. >> I know you all stab sharks. >> I don't do anything. I'm just helping out. I was just curious cuz it's not us. >> We know what people do when cops aren't around, right? >> We live in reality. >> Why are you being me? I didn't do anything to you. >> No, no. I'm saying >> we all know it's a common practice. >> Sorry about that. >> It's all good. No, no. Have a good day. Z, like I said, if you had any questions, you're free to ask. >> Uh, 10,000. Not much. >> 10,000 total. So, 10% of that. >> There you go. >> There you go. 10%. That's it. >> Yep. Pretty easy, huh? >> Yes. >> Uh, animal cruelty is um obviously misdemeanor. Uh the felony is when you do uh repeated and uh here hold on a minute I will read it directly out of statute. So a person so check it out. So let me read this to you. Right? It says a person who intentionally commits an act to any animal or a person who owns or has the custody or control of any animal which results in the cruel death or excessive or repeated infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering. So, that's pretty much what the the stabbing of the shark was. Excessive or repeated infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering. Um, commits aggravated animal cruelty, a felony of the third degree. It's unfortunate. Obviously, we're just doing our job and whatnot. We're not trying to obviously hurt your uh pocketbook, but uh I'm just telling you, as I was going to say, be careful. This video is um is starting to circulate on the internet. >> What's that? >> Uh the video of you stabbing the shark. on the internet. >> Somebody posted it. That's how we got it. That's how people uh see stuff on the internet. Like remember that guy who would drag that shark behind him or the guy in Tampa or uh the guy jumping on the pelican in front of the half shell robbar or turtle crawls. You know, all these things are they all start from the internet. So it's it's uh it's making its rounds. So that might affect your business, too. Everybody stab sharks. I know. That's what you said yesterday. >> But you said that that didn't kill them though, right? >> Yeah. >> Exactly. Thus the reasoning behind the repeated and excessive pain and suffering. So you weren't really killing it. >> All right, Zane. They'll uncuff you when we get upstairs. All right. I got you. >> All right. Let's go this way. Hey, it's FWC. We're bringing somebody in. >> There you go. >> Is it this door? >> It is. All right. There's a bench to your right. Just have a seat over here. Hello. Hey, >> Garrett was ultimately charged with aggravated animal cruelty with excessive pain or death, a thirdderee felony. Since being arrested, he has submitted a written plea of not guilty.
