receiving a crash notification sent via a cellular phone alert what could have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle try I'm 33 there's a single vehicle crash there deployment behind the over here I don't know okay when officers arrived they observed a vehicle with significant front-end damage having collided with the front ledge of a nearby electric sub Sub Station the officers approached the driver who was identified as the individual behind the wheel could this confusion have been a sign of disorientation due to impairment or just a mistake on the driver's part the driver was immediately suspected of possibly being under the influence of alcohol and further investigation began there's another guy did see him so he's going to ask but just report through he's stating he saw Tes traveling also found on that same street so they might have been picked up by that you okay yeah all right what's your name Maria Maria yeah okay what do you want H hold off in that for a sorry I'm so I don't like this game you're okay the officer's initial suspicion about impairment grew stronger as the interaction continued within minutes a Second Officer a sergeant arrived at the scene the sergeant began conducting a thorough investigation into the possibility of the driver being impaired by alcohol the sergeant immediately noted the odor of alcohol emanating from the driver's breath as well as other visible signs of impairment including the driver's apparent inability to respond to questions properly okay um here's I don't like this I don't like this let me ask you this I don't like this do you do you feel like you're injured at all as a result of hitting no I don't I just don't like the situation I'm in okay why don't you like the situation you're in I [ __ ] up um speaker they disconnected we're gonna have our call back always feels the longest when you like want it now someone can walk over there we go the driver continued to explain that they had consumed two cans of an alcoholic beverage earlier in the evening although this did did not seem like a large amount the officer was still concerned about the possibility of alcohol affecting the driver's judgment and coordination the driver was then asked to perform a basic test involving the recitation of the alphabet from a specific set of letters still the driver struggled and was unable to complete the task properly and they wanted to bring me into an ambulance and I freaked out okay that's the only reason like I have no problem anything else bre more breweries in a barlet and then one in a Huntley oh that's a real thing yeah J if she could have come down 64 and smacked she's going south how the hell she get end up here though she going bar [Applause] technically any drugs or alcohol no I like it there's a more Brewery Bart Bartlet and Huntley well she said in St Charles more Brewery in St Charles so that's probably one of the previous ones she went to no there is never previous more more is only two placees that's it St Charles never had it you take any medications on a daily basis any uh all any medic you're not hurting anywhere no she's not I just ran her yeah I don't know what what driver failed to perform the task as instructed given that the driver had been involved in a vehicle crash the officer requested the presence of medical personnel to assess the driver's physical and mental state shortly after medical professionals arrived and evaluated the driver after being cleared by the medical team the driver refused any transport to the hospital2 huh that's a tire tire track you know without looking at the clock do you know about what time it is right now no okay you had to guess what time you think it is1 7 7 p.m. or a.m. no p.m. yes okay I got you um what bar in St Charles were you atav I'm sorry are you familiar with the St Charles Area okay but you were at a bar in St Charles okay what time did you get to that one we live St Charles we left South oan at 4:30 4:45 5:00 okay and what time did you leave the bar in St Charles now okay so just before this crash happened now okay um and uh how much uh at in total tonight how much alcohol did you have to drink two white claws two white claws yes okay what time did you drink those two white claws anytime between 4:00 and now anytime between 4:00 and now that's all love drinking all night is for white claw um like what size were the white claws normal normal like can standard did you uh did you finish those two yeah okay but that's it okay um have you had anything to eat tonight well we had our like test conducted was the horizontal gaze nagus test which assesses eye movement to determine the presence of impairment during this test the Sargeant observed several signs that pointed to impairment all keep your eyes open I'm trying I'm sorry you're okay I'm going to be moving here in just a sec watch my finger we're about done we're going to go straight up one more time straight up okay Maria any physical problems or disabilities no nothing that would affect you walking in a straight line or raising one foot Perfect all right um what I'm going to ask you to do step back here cuz this is a straight line in front of you extending all the way out as far as it can go that way and straight back to your feet a nice straight line you got that mm okay um what I'm going to ask you to do is I'm ask you to put your left foot on that line 1385 there you go now place your right foot on the line ahead of your left foot with the heel of your right foot against the toe of your left foot and put your arms down to your sides can I get a ambulance for an I'm going demonstrate that your left foot on the line right foot on the line ahead of your left foot with the heel of your right foot against the toe of your left foot and your arms to your sides and it is maintain this position until I've completed the instructions do not start to walk until I tell you to do you understand the instructions so far got it what's that got it got it okay when I say begin take nine Heel To Toe steps on the line turn around and take nine Heel To Toe steps back on the line make your turn by keeping your front foot on the line and turn by taking a series of small steps with the other foot I'm going to demonstrate that for you okay so you're in that starting position we're still trying to determine what left foot on the line right foot on line your left foot with the heel of your right foot against toe your left foot your arms to your sides I'm going to demonstrate three steps you're going to take nine so nine heel toe steps on the line one two three keeping your front foot on the line you're going to turn by taking a series of small steps with the opposite foot and you're going to take nine heel to Toes has back on the line one two three all the way to nine sorry I'm cold you're okay so nine that way and N back that's correct all right keep your arms at your sides at all times watch your feet at all times and count your step out loud once you start walking don't stop until you've completed the test do you understand the instructions okay n forward nine backwards get get in that starting starting position you're going to choose either foot you're going to raise it approximately six inches off of the ground keeping your raised foot parallel to the ground and your legs straight arms to your sides hold that position you're going to count out loud like this 1001 1002 13 1004 1,5 and so on until I tell you to stop keep your arms to your sides at all times and watch your raised foot do requiring the individual to walk in a straight line touching Heel To Toe on each step and then turning properly the driver failed to meet the basic requirements of this test including not touching Heel To Toe improper turning and having their arms raised in an attempt to maintain balance these failures in performing the walk and turn test were additional indicators that the driver's ability to function normally was compromised following this the one leg stand test was administered which required the driver to stand on one leg and maintain balance for a specific period okay this get just counting up yeah okay all right go ahead and get in the starting position heels and tost the other arms to your sides okay sorry when I say begin you're going to begin okay yeah one second here okay balance were impaired likely due to alcohol consumption with the combination of the motor vehicle crash the driver's admission to consuming Al alol and the failure to perform basic field sobriety tests the sergeant decided to arrest the driver on suspicion of driving Under the Influence there's a good chance these branches up here did that depending on how far out they stuck like that's a pretty long one depend on how long far out that stuck they may very well have caused these these scrapes here yeah um but who knows I think Patel went to look and if he want to musle around to we'll see if anybody else reports anything theity we call this um I would say it's chipped but not like structurally or anything so yeah I mean I would say it's damaged but City that's City yeah 300 North I'll be 10 after the arrest was transported to the local police department for further processing was the officer's decision to arrest the driver for impairment the right call given the failure to meet the criteria of the tests upon arrival at the police department the driver agreed to provide breath samples for testing the results from the breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.238 this result was nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08% comma providing clear evidence that the driver's ability to operate a motor vehicle was significantly impaired [Music] all right
