On June 15th, 2024, officers with the Alaska Department of Fishing Game were on patrol when they noticed six fishing buoys with no identifying markings. The officers went to a nearby cabin where they made contact with the responsible parties. Hey, good morning, sir. How are you? My license is in the bottle. Okay. So, you come out from Oregon, huh? I live in California. Oh, nice. What part? Unfortunately. Well, never hurts to change for now. How long you been up here for? Just for visiting? Couple days. Just a couple days. Yeah. Okay. Just got here a day before yesterday. So, you Oh, so what? This is day three then? Wednesday. Yeah. Oh, very good. And I didn't get your buddy's name that you're up here with. What's his name again? Bill. Bill. What's his last name? Bill. Okay. And then how many other people are up here with you and Bill? My son. Oh, you and your son? Yeah. Is your son the one that was taking a photographer or pictures? The one you talked over there. Okay. Yeah. He's not fishing though. He's a vegetarian. He's a vegetarian with all the good stuff we got in the water. I know, man. A vegan, I should say. You know, I guess that's more good stuff for you. All right, Stephen. Perfect. My driver. Hey, good morning. How are you? I don't need All right. So, okay. Stephen got it on the 12th. You got it for two weeks. King salmon stamp as well. Okay. Sportfish and David Mc King Cannon. Okay. All right. You got yours. Same thing. Two week period. Oregon. Okay. Um, so who he says the pots are his, but you guys are the ones doing the fishing, correct? Y. Okay. Do you guys have any shrimp permits? No. Okay. Do you guys know? I didn't know that. I would have told him if I had known that. Do you have any of the rag books here with you at at your place? Like the fishing rags or the sport rags? Uh some He's the guy that pays attention to that, but I don't know. We might have one in there. Go see if you have one in there cuz I want to show you guys uh some things. Um cuz that book is super helpful. I relate to it all the time. Um cuz one thing definitely when we were driving by first and foremost, like I was telling Bill, um it's got to have your guys' information. I knew I kind of knew that to be honest. I mean, I didn't Yeah. So, even if it's Oh, thanks. Um, I think we got them. Here's another one right here. So, keep this on your boat. Uh, but we'll So, one thing I'll walk you through this real quick. So, hold on. Can Hannah, hold on to those real quick. And and I'll be honest with you, I've been doing this I've been doing the same dumb thing, I guess. Okay. Every year. Do you bring Do you have people come up all the time? Yeah. when they come with me, I don't, you know, I'm getting older. I just like get a younger guy and somebody to help and actually just bring them up and Okay. Yeah, but I've been doing that. So, and so it up. I apologize. Okay. So, how many pots? Uh, so what type of pots do you have out there? Just look just like that. So, so all you have are just shrimp pots. Yeah. All right. Cuz I saw dungeons here on the deck. Oh, yeah. No, we we we we set dunge here's how it typically goes. They come here on the 12th. The open the season opens on the 15th for the commercial guys usually. So we do two days of crabing right around the corner up here just on the other side of the first channel markers and then that's that's but we have been and you're right. We I have them. There they are. Okay. Four pots. Okay. So right now you're not doing any crabing. These four are already out of the water. So you just have shrimp pots out there. And how many shrimp pots are do you have? There's six out there, I think. Six out there. Yeah. And okay, we we just, you know, they got some new ones for me just like that with the blue and uh but I got two that look like that little kind of like weekender kind. Okay. And then two really super super old ones that have been here forever, you know, really just barely holding together. Yeah. So, if you're not the one that's going out taking the shrimp, um you guys first got to have a shrimp permit. Okay. Second, the buoys have to be marked with the first initial, last initial, the address. You actually put like cabin. I don't know what your address is out here. Yeah, I have it in there. It's And then you put the boat that you're using. That way we if we run out there and a different boat's pulling your gear. That's a separate issue. Um so you put your AK numbers on it. That way I'm like, "Okay, perfect. That boat's associated with these buoys." Um is your boat currently registered? No. Okay. You know, you got to have it registered. It's kind of like a car. Even if you're not up here all year, you got to keep up with that stuff. Okay. So that's where we're I've done it a few times. I've been up here 20 years now and I I just don't remember it. And then when I do remember it, I go in there and there they don't even charge me to be late, you know, like Okay. But but I have I don't know where I'm at. Where am I? Well, it's your last one cuz I know on your skiff it says 09. Yeah. We don't even um So, do you guys know if if those pots out there have any uh bio in them? What do you mean bio? Bio. It's like a degradable cotton. So, if Yes. Yes. They do sideways. Yeah, they have the Cuz a lot of times they don't come pre-tied. No, no, it is. Yes. Okay. Do you know how long the bio is? About like that. Okay. What about the old pots? You said some of them are some old pots that have been here forever. We put cotton those every Yeah, we we Yeah, the cotton and the cotton on the tie uh for the pop, you know, pots you don't need. Well, they are. Yeah, I didn't know that, but I knew that we had to have that rottable line rod. And we got rot line right in the boat here somewhere. Oh, very cool. So, how many dungeies have you guys taken since you guys been here? Uh, maybe 20 20 20 total or 20 a piece? Total. Okay. Two 10 poles. Okay. Um, with your dunge pots, same thing. You guys got to have markings on your dungeon pots. Okay. Um, and since you guys are non-residents, do you did you guys get over your limit? Do you guys know what your limit is? I don't even know which on right now on dungeons just kind of taking dungeons. I think it's probably 20. So 20 is for person use as a resident. Okay. Okay. I think for sport fishing it's three. But this is like this is where this thing comes in handy dandy. And like I'm going to leave this with you guys because I reference it like I said all the time. I just moved to Wrangle 3 months ago. Um so I mean this is key. Even if one you come up like once or twice a year, you just open it up to the sport fish and you guys will let's see take a look and we'll go down to tanner crabs. shellfish. So, crab. So, non-residents, uh, dungeonous crab. You just got to make sure that they're male. Six and a half inches. Okay. Well, that much. And then it's three per person. So, six uh a day. Yeah. So, how many days were you guys fishing that? Just two. Two. Yeah. And honestly, I'm giving you the honesty 20. Okay. All right. And only two of you have 15 licenses. Yeah. Yeah, we don't I you know I buy them every every year every every every every year and I don't even do it and so just to then I thought well this is crazy and then he doesn't eat it so either so he didn't get one either so yeah so if you guys just did two days then you know your limit would be 12 now going with here so how many shrimp have you taken so far oh gosh that many probably two pounds Two pounds at the most. Yeah, a couple pounds. Okay. And how long have How long have you been fishing the shrimp for? Uh since since we got here. So two I guess today is the this will be the third day. The third day of fishing shrimp. Yeah. But we didn't pull them. We didn't pull them. We only pulled them once. Okay. Cuz here it talks about uh shrimp for non-residents. You know, it says a permit required just right here. Just plain English. Uh 3 lbs are quartz. Okay. Right. So, 3 lbs or quarts. Or quarts. Uhhuh. So, this is one thing that you guys definitely have to keep on board with you guys. But, but we haven't pulled them today either. So, probably the last thing. Well, I mean, one thing that we're probably going to do, can we buy a permit from you? I don't sell the permits. I'm not free. That's the best part. I know. Yeah. You have internet connection out here? No. Where do you have to go to get internet connection? Uh, I don't know. You would know that probably better than I would. I'm I'm based out of Petersburg, so this is not necessarily you're probably going to have to go up to 12 end of the road. 12 mile. Yeah, probably even a little bit past 12 mile cuz when I drive out the road Yeah. Yeah. Shoe Maker. It's You'll have a spot right at Shoemaker about actually 8 mile. 8 miles. I know where like the last good portion where I get service just north of the slide is where where we're getting coverage when we're here. It's a little past that. So this is where we're running a couple issue guys. You know, I want you guys to come up, have a great time, but we always have to do it by the books. Yeah, I um one thing we're going to do is we're going to definitely go out pull your guys' gear because, you know, there's no name. Um you guys are non-residents with no permits. Um one thing I'll talk with him is what name would we put on it? Just let her finish. I got all what has to go on there. Yeah. So, even if they're his um but if you guys are the ones taking it, you guys could even make like a little card that's waterproof, laminate, attach it to the buoy. Um, that way you know if I'm on it and I'm or I'm coming and checking you guys and it's got his name on there and I'm like, "Wait a minute, you can't be taking this or you're taking the boat out by yourself." Attach a little tag that's got your name on it or um a little buoy. Yeah. Another buoy or Yeah. Or ziplockc bag with piece of paper and tape it to it. Uh that way you're the last deploying it. You're the retrieving. You're the one that's getting what is inside. Okay. Does that make sense for the rest of the time that you guys are here? Um, one thing I'll talk with him is, I mean, to be honest, we may look at seizing it just because it doesn't have the proper gear markings. It does not have the uh you guys don't have the permit requirements to even have any of the shrimp, right? Okay. Um, I mean, so, first and foremost, I'm going to leave this with you so that way for the rest of your time here, we want you guys to have a blast. Get out, go and enjoy what Alaska has to offer, but we have to do within the proper boundaries. Okay. Great. Um, so with you two for licenses, you guys at least have your licenses. You see that you guys have king stamps. We need to get this shrimp. Okay. So, one thing I'm probably going to write each one of you is no uh shrimp permit, okay? Cuz you guys have already taken shrimp. Um, you guys are already over limit on crab, but I'm going to write you each for no shrimp permit in possession because you guys have already obtained some shrimp. Um, and then the other one is there's no buoy markings on it. So out of the three of you, I can let one of you guys take the buoy markings and you guys can decide. What do you mean say that again? So do you remember the markings that have to go on the buoys? First name, first initial, last name. I could write six tickets to pull. Oh, I could write six tickets for not have write it to you. Yes. Okay. Our goal here is compliance. It's not I know. And I and you know, honestly, if id have paid more attention, I would have known. And I wouldn't I mean, it's like it's a free permit and it's a and it's a marker pen. Mhm. And that's all. And that's So I I'm apologize for that. I didn't, you know, it'll never happen again. I can promise you that. You guys in town? Jill the 24th. Okay. So you got nine more days or so. Yeah. Okay. Uh we're going to go check on the gear. We're going to go see what you got going on out there. You guys have been honest with us. Yeah. Probably more so than most people would. We'll take that into account. Thank you. So we're going to go We're going to take a look at what is out there. Make sure you guys are even being more honest with us. The whole nine yards. Yeah. Um, we came here for a different issue completely. Yeah. Yeah. So, I guess we should ask one more time. Is any of this gear yours? The the single hook calib. No, no, none of that. It's just the shrimp plots. And I thought those were mine because they're No, those are separate commercial. They're pretty common setup. So, Okay. All right. So, we're going to check what you got because we just bought two those two new ones. You know, they wanted more shrimp. So, I said, "Well, here's, you know," and they had them at the bay company and so we bought the two new ones. You'll see the you'll see two of those coming. the the funky ones which were here and then two of those and then two really old commercial really really old. We're just going to go document your stuff. We're not going to like pull every one of your pots cuz we have other things we want to do. Um and like I said, our our goal is compliance. So, we want to get you guys back into compliance, document what we've got going, and then we'll be back and and let you know how it all shakes out. But real quick before we take off, do you guys have your licenses on you? Driver's license. I have it up. Okay. If you want to go grab it right now, I'm going to take photos of them. Um, and then when I come back, one thing I'll just ask is a phone number. And then, uh, I'll tell you guys how to take care of the tickets. You guys will have 30 days, so plenty of time to, you know, have a good time here and then and then get back into service and take care of it. We've got enough stuff on the deck. You don't want to take your I appreciate it. I appreciate you. I appreciate what you're doing. Uh, do you want Is it easier just to run up there that way? I got a bad knee. It's hard. Yeah. No, you you can uh take your time. You said you'll be back. I'll just get it now. Come back down. Perfect. And then uh same thing with you, Bill. If you go up and grab your license, so next time we come back, I've got a lot of information. All right. Thanks, guys. [Music] Well, perfect. Can I ask you one quick question? Yes, sir. So, when it says here you're allowed three males, is that per day or is that total? Per day. per day. Okay. Doesn't say per day on here. Okay. You want to talk about it? Sorry. See it say per day anywhere? No. So, a lot of times it'll say per day. Um, unless I am wrong, Cody non-resident that that should be your daily bag. Yes, that is your daily bag limit. Okay. 3 lb shrimp. 3 lb or 3/4 per day. Yes. Okay. And then uh before I mean it's going to be worth your time running up to get cell service unless you know anyone around here that's got Starlink uh to get one of those free permits cuz I mean we pulled a couple of your pots and uh they had some good spots in them. They're doing pretty good. So um Bill and uh Steve, did you guys get your driver's licenses? Perfect. Make sure I grab that. Do not drop it. Have you ever done that? Uh no. and I don't ever plan to. So, don't d me. I have. All right. So, I'm going to give these to each real quick. I'll explain them because they're all the same finds um different uh statutes, but uh this way I can walk you through them real quick. So, William, here's yours. Stephen, thank you. And then David. All right. So, these are carbon copies. They are sometimes very terrible to read, so I apologize. Um but it comes out to $120 for all the citations for each one of you. Um I circled that in the right hand. Yeah, right hand corner. Um they're optional court appearances. So what it is, it's essentially like a speeding ticket. Once it get paid, it goes away. You guys have the right to contest it where you set a court date show up in front of a judge. Um that is all up to you. On the back of your citation, I circled a little area. It says take care of it within 30 days. Um and then there's also a URL that you can go online um and pay it online with credit card, which makes it quick, fast, and easy. Right. Uh they probably won't have it into the court system by the time you guys definitely get into town. You guys are heading back in. So I would say at least wait till middle of next week. Um cuz the courts have to enter everything manually and sometimes it takes just a a hot minute for them to get that done. You got 30 days. Yes. Um since we're still here, do you guys have any other questions? I mean um we could have definitely hammered you guys, but you like uh trooper or Sergeant Listister said, you guys have been up front, honest. Um, so we wanted to cut you guys a break and get you your gear back. Um, and then like you said, before you guys go back out and get those shrimp pops, just go get that free permit. Yeah, we'll drive down there. Okay. It's a gorgeous day to go for a drive. Yeah. Yeah, that's nice. It's a little windy, especially I wish it was coming south, you know. Yeah. Well, it'll be on your storm when you go home. Yeah, right. It might switch around, though. It definitely could. It probably will. I don't know. Who knows? I don't know. These guys can down. Got it. So, who sponsor those? for somebody or No, these are commercial guys that I'm meeting back in town. He had their No, it's got his Yeah, for shrimp. Oh, so we're meeting him back in town to get him his stuff and and a citation to go with it and I give him his gear back. So, right. If I can find out who the gear belongs to so I don't have to keep it and give it back to whoever it is, that's my goal. Those are they are. Oh, it's a lot of it's a lot of paperwork for us to put stuff into our evidence and and then not have anything to do about it. So, it's kind of a pain. I was hoping these ones were yours, too. A little bit of stack in there. Yeah. What is the deal on those? Well, I was trying to figure out who they belong to, but it's just essentially like like a long line. They've got one hook on it. It's got a downer ball at the end. It's got a halibet spreader and some bait attached to it. So, it's like a single long long line. An unattended halibet line. Oh, wow. So, but it's kind of a concern because we use it to provide. Well, first off, they're not marked. So, then we don't know who they belong to, but they have just just a a cannonball weight on them. And if you get a decent size halibet, they're going to walk off with that, right? And and you'll never see your gear again, and the halibit's going to go off and die. So, it's not really a good a good plant. So the guys do that. Commercial guys do that long way. They do, but they got anchored on this and they have certain areas they have to go like go just about anywhere. Oh, really? I thought they federal a salmon and they have to go and the commercial guys have skates or can you? Yeah. As a non-resident? No. No, I didn't think so that much. I just You can't put down a skate. You can't put down an unattended halibet line. You have to You have to hold on to a rod. Yep. Yep. Okay. cuz that's all we ever do. It's hard to do. We don't even do it very much. It's hard because I don't like to anchor. You know, anchoring is I'm I'm not super wellversed. Okay. So, I don't like to anchor. So, I wait for high slack and and hopefully no wind and then, you know, find a home along. Currents rarely anchoring can be dangerous around here cuz even though this this isn't this isn't a river, the currents can be pretty pretty stiff through here. It's almost like the Colombia in some places. Yeah, it could can get moving. Yeah. All right. Well, before we take off, guys, do you have anything else? No. I was curious what that was. Yeah. Make sure just again get the permit and make sure you got markings. Yeah. And we'll mark it. Yeah. We go out there. First name, the last name. And that that old one, that one was yours. Pulling it. This one? Yeah. We saw you guys put a smiley face on it. Yeah. The funny guys the last time I was here, Wilson. They thought it was like, "Oh, put Wilson on there. That's perfect. That works. What you might do, um, I've made most of my career here on buoy markings because people leave their stuff out. It doesn't stick very long. The fact that your buoys are already wet, you're going to have a hard time putting markings on them. What you might do is you might take your dungey buoys and because they're going to be in here, they're going to be dry. Ride them up and tie them off to those. Okay. That's going to be that's going to be the best bet, right? Um then then you can change it back when you're done for the for your trip, right? But uh yeah, get it squared away. Hey, appreciate you guys. Appreciate what you do. Well, you guys take care and enjoy the rest of your time you guys are here. All right. In the end, Bill was issued a citation for not having identifying markings on his six buoys. Steven and David were each issued a citation for harvesting shrimp without a shrimp permit. Each of the individuals involved paid a $120 fine. If you like this video and want to see more like it, subscribe to Arrest Cam. As always, thanks for watching.
