on the 14th of September 2022 an officer responded to a call regarding a reported employee theft at a local store the call had been made by a concerned individual Who provided initial details about the incident prompting law enforcement to act quickly over to me yeah yeah okay now I notic you have cameras to the 14th and 12th what happened to the 13th there was two days there were you able to get a third day is today the 14th or the 13th today's the 14th it it was the 13th and 14th she did not on the 12th did I put the 12th we just ask I thought yeah you wrote 12 on the envelope so all right so the DAT is wrong on the envelope so it's today and yesterday okay and did you go back to look at anything on the today's was she working on the 12 um no there wasn't there wasn't any Discretions on on that okay yeah no Discretions on that as far as if you look at those sheets that I gave you I think it was just the 13th and the 14th I think the 12th is clear a on arriving at the scene the officer was met by the store manager who appeared cooperative and eager to assist in the investigation the manager provided a detailed account of the theft including relevant facts that would help the officer proceed effectively okay do what we're going to try to do is we're going to try to talk to her okay and try to get a confession out of her CU right now I'm trying to push for scheme of for aelony but right now the only evidence that we have is the misdemeanor theft okay okay which is today all all we have right now that we can document and we have evidence on is her stealing money today and stealing money yesterday okay right um so as far as the other yeah nine months eight months yeah you that's that's give me one second sidebar but I mean this this can't be T further I mean that's just we' have to really like his cooperation was invaluable as it laid the groundwork for understanding the sequence of events leading to the theft and identifying potential suspects yeah I know yeah with the evidence there that's why I reach out these are some of my detectives that are coming with me today and we were just trying like listen we're trying to push for the felony and all that kind of money but as far as like the evidence you on the state can sit there and turn around and be like well how do we prove just because yeah so she gets on the computer it's her number she's the only one that can get in the computer with her number that's why inventory that's why I told you about that inventory you're willing to do the inventory the other thing is yeah I going to have to do it I'll have to call data scan and get that done cuz let's say today we figure all this out and let's we talk she said yeah I did absolutely every bit that I'm sorry for doing it now it's through so as the officer continued questioning the store manager they sought clarification on specific details such as what items had been stolen and any prior suspicions about thefts within the store I just sabotage the whole yeah degree of crime she committed so I'll get I'll I'll do I'll do a play I'll do a thing on it no problem okay cool yeah it'll take me a few weeks maybe a month to get it done but I can do it and and that's why I mentioned that earlier I did explain to them you know earlier that hey without that inventory we we can least slam dunk it and say I'm missing 1,000 pieces of I thly understand what you're talking about all right proof proof all right I've got it on the computer now I got to show it to you in the uh inventory okay the manager's input proved to be crucial in piecing together the situation and understanding what was required to move forward after Gathering sufficient information from the manager the officer began to focus on one of the store's employees a female who was identified as the primary suspect video surveillance okay about the past couple days while youve been working doing these buys yeah okay and you take these buys I see you on camera taking cash putting in your pants do you want to tell me a little bit about that uh yeah um to be honest with you like we're we're at a part right now to just fix it so just stay onon us and helping us do the right thing and figure it out the best way to does that make sense we've already been looking at this morning we're not here to we're not here to get you to tell us everything we know a lot already so that's why we're just asking for you to be Hest her behavior and prior conduct in the store had raised red flags making her the center of attention for the investigation that's what we want to do to make things right and take things is the best way to make things right get it that because that really helps with the whole process of where we found ourselves yeah sense so want to tell us kind of what's been going on lately it's been going on for a while so kind of get to the bottom of it I mean I know I mean I know what's going on I want to explain want you to explain to me what is exactly that you're doing I know what you're doing but in your own words um I just been having some stuff that I don't want and uh well majority of it is yeah I shouldn't be taking money from him the officer approached the suspected female employee to initiate questioning at first the suspect seemed confident and refused to admit any wrongdoing her demeanor suggested she believed she could deceive the officers and avoid accountability what do you mean like stuff that you don't want uh um I just been keing it in and then I bring it in um for two times I have done that um the other times um now have you brought where is the stuff that you brought in um it's already like out on the floor but it's just been like two purses and a pair of shoes but anything else I again I don't I don't he said honestly he's been a big here cuz I've watched the video surveillance and there you're not bring you're not bringing anything in the store you're not BR well the LA the last like probably like I want to say two weeks ago I have been I I brought in two purses and a pair of shoes but um for the rest of the part the rest of the times I have it so you would say only twice is that am I correct only twice you brought it actual merchandise swapped it out yes for the other the rest of the times you have done these transactions you just scam the register yeah to think that there was a b she denied all accusations and attempted to deflect responsibility however the officer experienced in handling such situations remained calm and persistent the officer understood that building Rapport and gaining the suspect's trust was essential for extracting truthful information yes okay how many times do you think you've done this in the past year um I want to say all the questions he's asking we already know the answers to so that's why yeah I'm I'm trying to think because that's all we to say more than 200 times more than 200 yeah I wouldn't say that less than 200 I I don't even think it's 200 times but I'm pretty sure 100 times through careful and measured questioning the officer emphasized the importance of cooperation urging the suspect to assist in uncovering the truth how much money do you I want to say a thousand a thousand yeah cuz I have all the documentation I have paperwork dating back until January and I see all the and it's totaling way more than $1,000 you're doing a couple hundred you're doing hundred and something dollars a day how much you take today was like 15 is that typically what youing after repeated attempts to extract information the female suspect began to crack under the officer's steady approach she initially provided a partial confession admitting to having stolen only a few items from the store she claimed she had taken a pair of shoes and a purse but insisted that this was the extent of her actions um I have it you're saving it you have it yeah you have all the [Music] money I I I don't know how much it would bean if I were to say $116,000 would that be about what it is yeah do you think you have all that $16,000 yeah however the officer relying on experience and intuition sense that the suspect was withholding additional details the officer explained the consequences of dishonesty warning the suspect that failure to confess fully would result in more severe charges this approach proved effective as the suspect eventually agreed to provide a complete account of her actions what what's what's going on why is it this I just living in a hard spot right now iate and like I've been on my own for a while and I also feel like I've been 220 go ahead I've been working with him for a while and and I feel like I do so much like your yeah Under Pressure the female suspect admitted to stealing a of items from the store she also confessed to having taken cash in addition to merchandise during further questioning she revealed that her thefts had not been limited to a single occasion and I know that's not his fault um at all like I should probably work for another job but it's like I feel bad for him like if I to leave and so what do you think what do you think will happen to him when he sitting now $16,000 know it's kind of it's it's not fair I shouldn't I should not be doing that right I take full responsibility and add whatever comes with that we we appreciate that uh any consequence is this is this is it because he hasn't paid you have you been paid oh I have I have I have been paid um okay so you said I I missed the beginning was you not happy with the the salary was that what it was you okay she disclosed that she had been stealing from the store for the past 9 months gradually taking items and money over an extended period this Revelation painted a clearer picture of the situation highlighting the suspect's repeated violations of trust and her exploitation of her position as an employee that's not fully why I do I'm not blaming you know I should not be doing that have you swim before no no where have you worked before here um I've been with him for a while I've worked the job before this I work at Starbucks but um that's somewhere Randon okay so since I've moved down here I've been working with him did you steal from Starbucks no I know this makes me look like a stealer like stealing money like that's like the most thing you could probably ever steal from somebody it probably makes me look bad it makes me look that I steal things but I don't to gain a comprehensive understanding of the extent of the thefts the officer accompanied the suspect to a separate room within the store this private setting allowed for a more in-depth discussion about the stolen items and the suspect's motives probably almost think no I wouldn't to say that like eight months ago to a to a year okay so you would you say safe enough to say January would probably like one of the first times you probably but like I said there's times where I've actually had items but majority of the time I I I haven't had items so out of all those buys from January you would say if I'm correct two times was the only times you actually had merchandise that of your own that you swapped out that I can remember yes yeah okay during this conversation the officer presented compelling arguments prompting the suspect to admit to additional thefts she agreed with the officer's points acknowledging her wrongdoing and expressing remorse I can't get today I get yesterday's uh today's Tom all right this is today's buddy love you I was $183 is what she said was want you go ahead and count that for me Lord holy God are you this is today two two three four three one two three I think some of that is my money but 7 374 and how much was stolen in the P how much did you take in the past two days 183 yesterday what the what my f says and how much today was two the officer documented the suspect's confessions meticulously ensuring that all relevant details were captured for further legal proceedings can I talk to you to who she wants to say something to you she wants to talk to you $116,000 you RI me off I could be doing good instead I'm taking out a Lo to survive you stole $116,000 from me since January what did you want to say following the completion of the on-site investigation the officer arrested the female suspect she was placed in a patrol vehicle and transported to the police station for further processing Tov you stole 16,000 from me since January what did you want to say the female was presented to court where she faced charges of grand theft in addition to these charges she was sentenced to 5 years of probation $660 in court fines and ordered to pay $1,713 81 in restitution with a minimum payment of $350 per month I'm honestly just so sorry I mean I don't expect you I expect you to pay me back oh I I am this restitution was mandated to compensate the store for its losses ensuring accountability for her actions and serving as a deterrent for similar misconduct in the [Applause] future good to you nothing but good to you always treated you as my number one it was nothing against you it was my personal issues it was it was nothing
