You know how long? Uh, it had to be it had to be less than 30 minutes. Walmart would have to look at their came Yeah, I was going to say I got him. I got him. I got him. I got him. I got him. Go. Come here, buddy. Delta 40, we had the care. We're trying to get him out now. Come on, buddy. A police officer's job isn't only about putting away the bad guys. While that is a big part of it, in some instances, the police are required to be heroes who risk life and limb for the safety of others. And when good cops truly care, very heartwarming encounters follow. Come here, sweet. Come out of the store. No, don't touch our car. Mom off. No. Come here, real quick. No. No. No. Don't do that to her. Don't scare her. On April 19th, 2024, officers responded to a location following reports that an intoxicated woman was spotted pushing a child in a stroller at 1:00 a.m. According to the suspect, there was nothing to be concerned about as she was simply walking the baby home. What's going on? Did JD just kicked me out? I paid for a room for everywhere. Yo, I can't do this no more. Where are you staying at? Fam with my clothes. They on their way. I just rent a room for my boss. I up. Sorry. I have to bring the baby home. I bring her home cuz I don't want nothing happen. Baby, please can you I don't understand what's going on. They just kicked me out of Flamingo. I not flamingo seat bels. I work for JD and yo J on my back because I had the baby in the room. I work for JD. I've been there 15 years. She's tired. I'm bringing the baby back cuz she was with me. We had a birthday. Where's the mother? First, let's point out the obvious. The suspect, Cheryl, was under the influence of either drugs, alcohol, or both. Combine that with pushing around a child in a stroller at 1:00 a.m. in a bad part of town, it sets off a lot of alarm bells. And it wasn't even her child, according to Cheryl. It was her niece. And she was in a hurry to get her back to her mom. How much you drink? Yeah, just drink now. And I'm not being Hold on. Hey, Cheryl. Hold on. Hang on. Hang on. No, I'm not beat cuz nobody want to help me. But your kid, come on. She's not. I still win. Yo, I'm not a kid. I'm bringing her to my sister. Can you bring me my sister? Is this your kid? Whose kid is this? Mimi, why y'all coming after me? Some reckless type of way. No sense to me. Because I pay for a room here. I paid for all these rooms. You're intoxicated right now. No, I'm not. But I'll pay for all the rooms and everybody keep kicking me out. I work for JD. I had a room at C House. I have a room at 20, but we paid for the room. Y'all always there. Y'all was there, but they got a lot of activity. Can I bring her to her mother? She left because this is Marin's kid. Yes, this is Marin's kid. We just left there. We were having a a birthday cake at Seat House. I have a room at Seat House. I'm not beat for my boss cuz he's a right now. And you're bringing this kid back to I'm bringing her right here right behind Samara. Yeah. So, what why do you have Marin's kid? Why doesn't she have Mer? Uh because she had a bike and I have the stroller. She was on a bike and I'm riding I'm riding her in a stroller. Okay, go ahead. I'll follow you back there. Can you please can you please? And she has this and then and they do some we pay for a rubier. Why should I keep pay for all these monies? I can't do this. Although she said that her sister was staying around the corner, the officer still had more questions. In situations like these, the more questions the better, as it's always better to be safe than sorry. All right, so she's going to come from around the corner. She's deaf and she Why? So why did not she Why didn't she meet with you to come get the kids? We was We have a birthday party. I had a room at Sea Palace and and Marin's at the over here. Yeah, but they keep breaking her room and Frankie her whatever happened today. I worked I don't know what happened. Yeah, I know. But so you were at a party drinking with her kid. No, I was at Sea Palace with with Marin's kid. No, she Yeah. Yeah. Well, she just came there and bought her. Yeah, but they over there dropped Frankie climbing through the window. Baby scared to sleep there. I was going to keep her. My boss said I can keep her, but I can't cuz seat belts don't want her there because I don't have her on the when you sign the kid on the list. So, I have to bring her back. Yes. Just now. Yes. Ask my seat belts. I don't have no drama out here, y'all. I'm not beat for this. No, I I just trying to make sense of your story. Yeah, but I have a room at seat belts. Room eight. Room eight. And I'm not staying here cuz my boss just got on my back. Take him out. Oh, I know she's cold. Okay. Can I bring her home? Cheryl said her sister gave her the child as someone had recently broken into their hotel room and it wasn't safe. However, Cheryl wasn't allowed to bring the baby into her hotel room as the child wasn't on the registration list. That's why she was bringing the child back to her sister. Listen, my uh sorry, she's just going to speak with you real quick. I don't want to talk to no about Can I bring her child? Cuz it's not my job. Come on. Come here, sweetie. Can you come out of the store? No. Don't touch her and call her mom in the car. Can you call her mom? Come here, sweetie. Real quick. No. No. Don't do that to her. Don't scare her. Can you call her mom? Can you call her mom before you touch my baby? No. Don't worry about it. Call her mom. Call her mom. This is not my kid, though. We know it's not going to cop. Okay, we'll get Where's mom? You are mom right a street over. Can we go there? We'll have our mother come here. Why don't you just run over there? Can you just bring over the baby? Elena name. I love you. They did a lot of grimy that flaming go. I can't. So So Elena, how old are you? Five. Holy snikes. You're 5 years old. The officers didn't care if Cheryl said she was just going around the corner. Even with a police escort, they weren't about to allow an intoxicated woman to stroll off with a child that wasn't hers. As a result, an officer was sent to collect Cheryl's sister, Mimi. So, can you can you call mommy? Can you ma'am? I just told you for the fourth time someone's going to get her. I'm I'm guessing you're highly intoxicated. No, I'm not. Yeah, I was over there. Yeah, we had birthday party. Yeah, because I was You're under arrest. Put your hands behind your back. You're under arrest for child neglect. Stop. Child endangering. You're in custody of the child. Listen, Elena, your mother's coming. Don't come away. Stop. Stop. Put your arms behind your back. You just said you're wasted. It's okay, Elena. Yes, that's over here. I didn't do nothing bad. It's 1:00 in the morning. You're walking around drunk with a juvenile. I walked her back. Yes. How about What the is wrong with you? How about that? I was bringing her back to her mother. I have a romance. Yeah. Where's her mother? Her mother. It's ridiculous. Kids 5 years old. Yeah. I was bringing her back to her mother. We have a real Yeah. Where's her mother? Is she drunk, too? Hey, guess what? Hey, you got an open container. We'll write you for this, too. Okay. We'll write you for that. That's not mine. Okay. Oh, was in the stroller. It's in the stroller with the kid. That's not That's nice. 5-year-old stroller booze in there. The officer was right to give Cheryl a tongue lashing. Like he said, her actions were completely unacceptable. Next, the officers tracked down Mimi to a nearby hotel and brought her to the scene, but not before cheering up the little girl, Elena, who was visibly upset. Elena, I'm sorry about that, honey. So, your mom's going to come over here. Okay. Is it nice and warm in there? What's this right here? Is that Is that a steering wheel? No. All right. Do you have a driver's license? You don't have a driver's license? I thought you said you were 35, right? No, I was five. Five. How many is five? This many? Or this many? Yeah. This. And what grade are you in? Um, you go kindergarten. Kindergarten. Who's your teacher? Do you remember her name or no? How about this? I got an easier one for you. What's your favorite color? Pink. Pink. Like your pants. Holy snikes. Pink. I like pink. What color is this? Your pink crocs. You have Crocs on? My boys have Crocs. You cold? You're chilly. That's okay. Mommy's going to come. What's What's mommy's name? Mimi. Mimi. Okay. While the officers waited for Mimi to arrive on the scene, Cheryl was transported to the police station. And while Mimi's story corroborated with what Cheryl had told officers, it still wasn't a valid excuse. As telling the truth doesn't make stupid decisions, right? You want to give us some kind of explanation why your daughter's walking around at 13? Number one, she was sleeping at the sea palace. Okay. With Cheryl. Okay. Something happened with them. I said, "Well, then bring her back to my room." Okay. She was supposed to be bringing her back to my room. Okay. She's highly intoxicated. She's in charge of a 5-year-old and it's 1:30. She was sleeping. All right. She's got a bottle of booze on her. She's got a little shooter in her pocket. Okay. I don't. Okay. I'm just saying she's highly intoxicated. I left her. Okay. My daughter. I would never leave my daughter if somebody highly intoxicated. Hershey. Okay. Okay. First of all, number one. Okay. I left her asleep at the sea palace. Mhm. I came back to my hotel room. Mhm. I didn't know what was going on. She just called me. He said that something happened. She punched something at the sea palace. I said, "Well, then bring the baby back." Who punched something? That Cheryl did. Okay. White Cheryl punch her. She's right in the police car cuz she was freezing. Before reuniting the mother and daughter, the officer told Mimi that child services would be involved. He didn't believe her story that she didn't know Cheryl was intoxicated given that she called Mimi at 1:00 a.m. Her speech slurring and saying she had been involved in a physical altercation. So she calls me and she's like, "Well, I hid something." I said, "Why would you hit something?" I said, "Well, then bring the baby back here." Yeah. You saying when I left you guys, you guys were both sleeping. Yes. So what she had told me was that um she was actually kicked out of the room because JD had found out there was a child staying there that wasn't on the list for her at the room at the hotel. Yeah. She didn't tell me that. So that was kind of They both were sleeping. When I said I didn't know they was fine. Besides everything, she's our first priority. Yeah, definitely she is. She's in touch always. She's highly in touch. I didn't know she was, but she's got a shooter in her pocket. But the thing is, when I left them, they were both sleeping. She was knocked out. That's what I'm saying. Go get her inside. Uh, this phone number, this phone's gone right now. Make sure you guys come and get me. Listen, this is I appreciate it. After everything, these are a priority. I know. You know, they go over everything. They go over my guys. They go Listen, I got seven children. Yeah. So, this is my first priority before anything. So, and I thought that she was safe over there. Okay. And sleeping. You know what I mean? Like Yeah. So, all right. So, uh they're going to be in touch at some point. I don't know if they're going to do an immediate response or so. And uh probably tomorrow, just to confirm, you're roommate, correct? Yep. Okay. No, I'm Oh, they're roommate over there. Your room three. Okay. I came into this late. Thank you guys. Thank you, ma'am. I appreciate it. Cheryl was charged with abuse of a child involving cruelty or neglect and resisting arrest without violence. And while it was horrible to see an intoxicated adult looking after such a young child, at least the child wasn't alone, like in our next case. On April 1st, 2024, police officers in Yria, Ohio were dispatched to a neighborhood after a woman reported that she had found a 2-year-old child wandering the streets alone without an adult in sight. When officers arrived on the scene, they were greeted by the caller who told them that the child walked up to their car and was peering inside like he was looking for something. Well, I caught you all. I was pulled up to the mailbox and he was on the opposite side like in my window like this. So, I got out. No, he wasn't in the car. He No, but he was like looking at the car. Okay. So, I was like, "Oh, no." And then he like was crying a little bit. So, I got out and he like gave me a hug and everything. I said, "Where's your mom? Where do you want to go?" Man, you live down here. And he pointed, "Do you live down here?" Yeah, that's my mom right there. Do you recognize this? I don't. I have actually never seen him. He tried to come in her house. Like I was like, "Where do you live? Where do you stay?" And he pointed across the street. So I walked him across and then he like pointed in and she was like opening the door, cracked, just kind of peeking out. And he tried to walk in, but I haven't seen anybody. I don't recognize him. Hey, booty. He's in diapers. Hi. Is he totally non-verbal? He's trying to say something, but we can't make out what he's saying. As the child was having difficulty communicating, it was impossible to know how long he'd been wandering the streets alone, and more importantly, where he lived. And without a name to go by, getting him back to his family would be like finding a needle in a hay stack. Although it was likely he lived nearby, the officers feared he might have been abandoned. Have you seen him before? That's what I'm saying. It's a lot of kids over here, so he looks familiar. Okay. All right. Come on, buddy. Okay. I'm having this guy run through. Okay. All six of these streets. So, just to see if there's ever been a call before. Is this your house, buddy? Do you live down here? No, I live on seven. You live down here? Do you recognize this one? No. No. Okay. All right. Thanks, R. I appreciate it. What? We don't know. We don't know. We're trying to figure out. We don't know. Yeah. He's been like walking around pointing at every door. So, if you know him, we'd really appreciate it. Do you recognize him? I think the one here. One second, buddy. I think he's saying 103. This is 103. I say 103. I mean 105. 105. Okay, here we're going to go to the next one. [Music] Really? There's supposed to be a car for them. This this kid, do you guys recognize him at all? He's not from this street. You don't know what's his name? He's just We don't know. As the officers suspected, finding the child's home proved difficult. The boy was getting tired of walking around, so the officers took a photo of him to publish on Facebook. Suddenly, a familiar face turned up. Are you mom? Yes. What do you say? What's your son's name? Yeah. Come over here, man. Is there anyone else at the house or is it just you? That's it's it's um their dad's there right now. Okay. So, who was supposed to be looking after him? Me. That's me. He He just It had been like 20 minutes ago. I usually leave my screen doors locked because he opens my door and go out. This is the second time he's done it and I caught him. He was at the park. This was what day before yesterday. He just started doing this. I don't I don't play that. My my kids don't come outside at all. Play with other kids. They're always in the house. That's probably why because he's always in the house and has to get out. The mother, Devashia, was brought to the police station to be reunited with her son. However, the police weren't about to let her off that easily. They were concerned that neglect may have played a role in the boy's disappearance, so they had questions that needed answers. My sergeant mentioned he was doing stuff with his ears um when you were talking to him, and you said that your other son does that. Um, yeah, my other son does do that. Which which other one is doing? The the oldest. The oldest. Yeah. But I think it's more of a um It's like when they get in trouble. It's not like I yell all the time cuz I don't yell all the time, but when I know they're about to get in trouble, it's like they get like a certain type of way. But it's not a all the time thing. It's sometimes he don't he don't do it all the time. I would say my oldest do it more than him. Okay. Did Sergeant Walker talk to you about autism and all of that? Yeah. Okay. Is the Because obviously he's two, so he should he'll be three. He'll be three on the 14th. So he's almost three and he's not really talking. I don't know if it's just because they're they're in the house all the time and they don't be around much and they just, you know what I'm saying? If they were around kids, they would know a little bit more. Dashia said that the lost boy talked more than her other children at his age, claiming that he was probably just shy around the officers, suspecting that the boy might be autistic, the officer provided her with a list of resources in case the boy had special needs. But after that was said and done, he still had more questions. So, is is everybody in the house homeschooled or do No, he's just homeschooled. And the other one's not school. Yeah, he'll be in school next year. But who's who's homeschooled? My oldest. The six is he's the only one that's six-year-old. Yes. Or that's homeschooled? Yes. Period. And nobody else helps you with managing all of the kids. And is the father in the country or not? He's he's he's he's in it. Okay. Like, you know, does he does he help with the schooling and all of that, watching the kids? Okay. About how many days a week would you say? Uh, two days. Three days a week. Is that like a full day or like a part of a day or part of a day? How many hours would you say? I have probably five hours. 5 to 6 hours. Okay. Next, the officer asked Avashia if she had any questions for him. He seemed concerned that she seemed to have no idea how long the boy had been missing. It was even more concerning that many of the people that the officer spoke to were actually Dvashia's neighbors and they didn't recognize the boy at all. I don't even let them go outside because like I know I don't I don't want to seem like a a bad like a you know but I don't want my my children seeing the wrong stuff. You know what I'm saying? Because be cussing and okay you know I don't want my kids introduced to that type of stuff. was going on. Obviously, we did try knocking on I think we tried knocking on your door. I'm not 100% sure cuz I did come back. Obviously, they did find you eventually. Did they find you by knocking on? No, I went out. I was on the phone with the was just walking and I seen people. They were like, "Are you looking for a little boy?" I'm like, "Yeah, I'm running." So, you noticed he was gone? Yeah. I was hold like I'm not I'm new to this stuff. stuff happen. There's a marker. I got some um That's pretty much all I did. Let me uh let me go talk to my boss and then uh we'll see if we can get you out of here. Dashia said that the neighborhood kids were a bad influence and as a result, she did her best to keep her kids away from them. Still, something felt off about what Dvashia was saying. putting the needs of the child first. The officer had some bad news for Dvashia after discussing things with his colleagues. All right, Devasia, understand the you are going to be cited today for endangering children. Now, before you freak out about it, you have your day in court. You can explain what happened that you were busy preoccupied with your other kids. I am going to listen before you get upset. I am going to put everything in there about how he could possibly be on the spectrum and that we don't know which would work in your benefit. Like this is like so not fair. Like it's not fair cuz I'm not it's like hey sweetie and and like you told me too. You went out trying to find him. You tried to to call. I called I was on the phone. Just just understand from our side it was an hour. We were starting to put his picture online. We had a lot of steps moving to try and find you because we couldn't. Okay, this is not the end of the world. At the end of the day, we are here to assist you. This is a simple go to court, make your case, they're going to read our report. Okay? So, you know, we do have to contact CPS anytime a child goes missing. We re we reunite them with the family. That's why I was asking you the questions about home life. It turned out that Devosia had a previous record with the police for leaving a baby in a vehicle unattended in 2022. She's currently out on probation after being summoned to a grand jury. The case has been referred to child services for further investigation. On July 7th, 2022 in Slidell, Louisiana, police officers were dispatched to a Walmart after an employee reported that an intoxicated mother had almost dropped her newborn baby several times. But by the time the police arrived, the woman was gone. However, shortly thereafter, they received a report about a hit and run involving the same woman. You were previously advised, but there is a newborn infant in that van. Hey, I'm all right. You're in the head and run. Yeah. Okay. Can you tell me brief the the other vehicle went that way? Yes, it went that way. I was I was following her, but the man told me to stop following. The the man said what? On 911. He almost told me to stop following her. I was going to follow her. She jumped on the interstate and then she was going in and then he told me to um get on top. So I would get off of the interstate and then she whooped and then she came off of where where did she actually hit you at? I was on gauze on gauze. Okay. All right. So okay. So uh you followed her from Gauze over to here. How did the crash occur? Like what what lanes were y'all in? I was in um I was I was actually further back. She was up ahead. So I had got over in the right hand lane and then I was going so she didn't look in her m and then she realized she hit me and then I thought she was going to stop. So I stopped and then she took off. While the officer was busy talking to the man, he received a call from dispatch telling him that the woman who was involved in the hit and run had returned to Walmart. Only this time she didn't have her baby with her. The officer then made his way over to Walmart to confront the woman. So I called her baby on the floor and took off and I just don't want the baby to be like she just got involved. Huh? This is her. Yes. Hello ma'am. Detective Williams. Hi. Hi. You got to come talk to me about it. We'll see you in a bit. No, ma'am. Wait. No, no, no. You're going to You're going to come with me right now. I'm sorry, but I don't know what you're talking about. Okay. This is what's going to happen. You're under arrest. Okay. Wait. Yep. You're under arrest. Wait. Don't Don't act talking about Wait. Don't act open here. You also alcohol. Sir, can you tell me what this is about? Don't Do you really want to You really want to do this here? How about you face that way? You're under arrest. For what? Turn around. Can you tell me what this is for? Sir, you're about to ruin. Sir, I'm sorry, but could you tell me what this is for? The woman continued to resist until another officer showed up to help restrain her. While being read her rights, she repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, acting as if she had no idea why the officers were there. And when the officer asked where her baby was, her reply was shocking. Where's the child at? in the car by yourself running. You left your towel in the car with the car running. How old is the towels? A month old. Wow. Um, yeah. I came in to get a money order. They sent me to another. Do we have that vehicle? Okay. There's a onemon old in there by itself. Can you please tell me what the problem is? There's a onemon old in that vehicle. Whoever's got that vehicle by itself, if you're with that vehicle, Mhler, secure the baby. Thank you. I have the baby. Thank you. The situation was horrible, but considering the state of the mother, the silver lining was that the baby was safe. Remember, the suspect had already been in an accident earlier, and if the officers hadn't shown up, she would have gotten behind the wheel again. It was downright despicable behavior and being intoxicated was no excuse. Unbelievable. In the right seat for her Kaden just to check the baby out. They're coming. Okay. She's uh drunk. I'll give you 21. It's ridiculous. The van's all beat the hell. I thought I just heard him. That's fire. Unreal. Baby, was the baby like real heavy with sweat and everything? No. I mean, the car was running with the air wasn't on. That damage is consistent with Dude, that car is This car is trashed. This is consistent with the 100. It was by his driver, Wheel Wells. He He said she came over on him from the right lane. Oh, feel this. This I'm sorry. That's why it felt like it wasn't running. Oh, how hot is that? Oh my god. It's not that the air is not worse. It's just hot. You leave an infant in an unlocked and running car in the middle. You know, [Music] and then Jason can throw the on. It's Rachel. Rachel. Okay, I got pictures for her, too. Just the conditions. That's right. That's great. She's like, "Thank you, somebody." Look, there you go. That's all I wanted. Whether she left the air conditioner on or not, the temperature in the vehicle was far too hot, especially for a newborn baby. Thankfully, the paramedics were on scene to look after the child. while the suspect was escorted to the police station. We get the report that your vehicle has been involved in a hit-and- run crash. Okay. Now, that I've been trying to ask about. I do not know what in the world anybody's talking about because a car came up and took off my side of rear view. Uh-huh. I did not hit anybody's side of river. I'm upset that somebody took mine off. Oh, so you're saying somebody hit you, not that you hit somebody else. Right. And I'm very, very upset about that because I have no way how to track them down. So, can I ask you this? Know how to fix that? So, can I ask you this? If you were so very concerned about somebody crashing into your car, why didn't you call us? Because my number one concern was I had zero miles per hour, like how you can hit the little button and it shows you how many miles you have and it was on zero. So, my first concern was get to Walmart, pick up the Walmart to Walmart, get the money, and put some gas in the car before you break down the side of the road, then handle everything else. The officer didn't buy her story for one moment, but for the time being, it was beneficial to keep her talking until she slips. When questioned about the smell of alcohol, she said it was from the night before, but the officers had ways of determining if she was telling the truth. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. One, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. All right. Are you ready? Okay. You may begin. Count out loud. I'm sorry. You need to count out loud like you were instructed to do. Okay. Can we restart? I thought you were going to count. 1 156 1 17 1 1920 1 21223 1 425 1 26 Ah, that's good. I'm going to be very straightforward and honest with you right now. Okay. Yeah, I'm tired, but I'm not drunk. I haven't drank at all. I want you to listen to me. Okay, look at me. Look at me. You're lying to me. And I know that. I really haven't drank. You might not remember drinking, but I'm telling you right now that you have alcohol inside of your body. You are impaired, and that is why you're being arrested for it. If I had no suspicions of the fact that you were impaired, you would not be being arrested. Okay? I'm not going to sit here and argue with you. I'm going to tell you the facts. You are impaired. You do have alcohol in your system and you should not have been driving that car. You think that? No, I know that. Okay. Those are facts. That is not a matter of opinion. The matter of opinion is that you think that you are not impaired. Well, I didn't drink. The woman was charged with hit and run, cruelty to juveniles, improper child restraint, and third offense DWI with child endangerment. She pleaded guilty and was convicted of third offense DWI and received a 5-year sentence with four years suspended and one year to be served through home incarceration with an ankle monitor. On January 31st, 2024, officers pulled over a 28-year-old woman from Bowling Green who allegedly attempted to shoplift $280 worth of merchandise from Walmart. After Walmart's asset protection team confronted her, she fled the parking lot at high speeds before she was eventually spotted and pulled over by the police. Come here. Come here. What did I say? Come here right now. Turn around. Face that vehicle. Put your hands behind your back. What did I do? Huh? Well, is there a car with a cop car with lights on behind you? Yeah, I stopped. Then why are you popping out? Hey, I didn't see you. I'm sorry. Don't lie to me. You just said you stop. Oh my god. That's why I stopped right here. I just got freaked out. Sorry, I have PTSD. Please calm down. These two people were following me around in the store and as I was walking out, I left my car and ran out here. I'm sorry. Please stop moving. I'm sorry. Sorry, please. Stand up. My son's right there, sir. Yeah, sit right there. H O A14 A4 H A14 A4 [Applause] Can I please check on him? He's fine. Did you put him in the car seat correctly? No, cuz I was trying to get away. I was scared. Get away from what? When confronted, the woman immediately turned on the waterworks in an attempt to gain some sympathy, but the officer wasn't falling for it. If it was true she was becoming paranoid that people were following her around the store, it was probably asset management watching her switch price tags. Go ahead and put her in your car. What am I am I going to jail? Well, we're going to figure out what's going on. Can I talk to somebody, please, and explain to them what happened? Yeah. Hold on. Put me in a car. We're putting you in a car because you already kind of took off on me already. That was not what I was trying to do. Trying to get out of here cuz I was scared. Have a seat. That's it. That's it. Everything is in the store. Have a seat. Hi. Oh, where'd your bottle go? Here's your bottle. [Music] Oh, you want your bottle? Let's put you in your seat correctly. Okay. How about that? We put your seatelt and everything on you correctly so you don't wiggle it around. I know you don't like it, huh? You don't like it. I know. [Music] Stop. Come on. Put your arm through here. Put your arm through here. Put your hand through. There you go. That's a good boy. No officer wants to arrest a parent in front of their child. But sometimes parents put officers in such a tough position. The officer told the suspect she needed to provide them with the name of someone who could temporarily look after her child as she wouldn't be going home that night. Am I getting arrested? You're going to jail tonight? Yes. You're getting multiple charges? Yes. For what? Multiple charges. You're getting you're getting charged for the theft and you're also getting charged for child endangerment. Child endangerment. What? Yeah. You whipping around here with your kids not buckled in. I'm scared. They were following me. So that's a lie. We have it on camera. Listen, call the cocoon. They will tell you I am with them. I have domestic violence issues. Okay. I just got away from the father, sir. I wasn't fleeing. Please don't. I should have called them, but I had no problem. And I didn't see you. I was fleeing from them. Okay, that's it. I was running from them cuz I was scared. Whoever you were fleeing from, your child was not buckled in. That's why you're getting that charge. So, when they stopped you at this entrance, why'd you walk to the other one? The guy started walking really fast and then he said something. He said something and I didn't understand him and then I the lady came around like the corner from between the two doors but she didn't just like walk up to me slowly. She like ran almost and scared the out of me and that's when I started running and then I looked back and saw them following me. So I swear to God. So were you scared of them? Is that why you were using a fake barcode to scan items? Is that why you were hiding stuff in the car? Because I just am stupid, sir. Okay. Well, you can understand how you're doing one thing, but now you're telling me that the reason why you took off and didn't buckle your kid into the child seat was for another reason. Why? It's hard for me to believe that, right? Even though she was caught red-handed, she continued to claim that she was being honest. As the officer said, he believed that she was a victim of domestic violence, but that wasn't an excuse for shoplifting and putting her child in harm's way while fleeing the scene. Do you understand your rights, guys? Please. What's going on, sir? Please. Well, we were told by loss prevention that they tried to stop you cuz you were trying to take stuff out of the store. Can I tell you what happened? Okay. I left everything in that store. My car, even groceries I paid for off my credit card. Where'd you leave them at? Right at the doorway, sir. Right in front of the meat section. Like where you can get the deli stuff. Okay. And I was freaking out because I watched the fat guy walk. I have PTSD, sir. If you look me up, you'll see I've been involved in multiple domestic violence situations. Okay? I can name three guys that have beat the crap out of me. So, I asked the female that was walking around with the guy around the store. I said, I was one once before, so I'm just asking cuz I'm freaking out a little bit. Are you guys um like secret shoppers or something cuz you guys haven't got any stuff and I've seen you guys following me around everywhere I go. And she said, "No, we're not secret shoppers." Blah blah blah. I said, "Okay." She said she scanned all of her items but left them in the store because she was certain a man was following her. When she saw an opportunity, she made a run for it, putting her son in the back seat and speeding out of the parking lot. It was far-fetched, but she was sticking to her story. Once you get once you go past all points of sale, it's theft. So even if you leave the stuff in the store, it's still theft. What? It's in the store. They scan something. Okay. But like what? Everything is in there. The food is in there. Okay. But they were trying to talk with you. I know. I freaked out. Sir, I'm not lying about the PTSD. I put a hand to God, sir. Hand to God. You can look up Dander, Zack Fountain, and Chris Hunt. Those are the three last people I was with and they all got charged with domestic violence. I'm not kidding. I phone my mom right now and even she'll tell you how bad I get. I am so paranoid. Where do you live at? Here in BG live in Bowling Green. Yeah. Okay. Like I'm already on probation for a felony I got indicted for forever ago. So yeah, I admit I I ran out here. They're trying to talk to me, but I have a problem of where if I get way too much anxiety, I freak out. And now that I'm doing the Inloo program and I'm with Harbor, they don't let me take my anxiety meds. So when I freak out, I get extra bad. So I was freaking out. So I would have stopped and called me and talk to them and let them go through my cart and see what was scanned and see if there's anything that's not and they could have kept their stuff and trespass me. I don't care. But I can't go to jail over this. Dude, I was already freaking out trying to scan my stuff. Although she feigned innocence, that would be up to a judge to decide. She was searched before being loaded back into the squad car and taken to jail. Thankfully, her ex-husband arrived on the scene to take their son so he wouldn't have to be taken by child services. I do want to apologize. I really wasn't running from you. I swear to God. Like, as soon as I saw the lights, I stopped. I didn't notice the lights. I think you were too far back, but I swear to God. I didn't know. All right. I believe you. Is there any way I can get his number out before we go to the jail? Cuz I'm just going to freak out being in here, man. So, just don't leave me in here too long, please. I don't want to have a PTSD episode. There'll be an officer by So, if you start yelling for us, do you guys have a spare officer that can like sit back here with what this officer is going to be doing? Crack the window a little bit if you want. The woman was charged with theft and child endangerment following her arrest and was booked into the Wood County Jail. Her bond was set at $5,000. On June 19th, 2022, Wisconsin police officers were dispatched to a neighborhood in response to a houseire. When the officers arrived on the scene, they were told that a three-year-old boy was trapped inside. 707 is fully engulfed. I can't get in. There's a three-year-old in the back bedroom. Information about a child. Can you tell? Copy that. Mobile home. God damn it. Aside from the obvious, house fires come with a host of deadly threats. Electrical malfunctions, falling ceiling beams, and broken glass, just to name a few. Although this was really a job for the fire brigade. Sometimes police officers arrive on the scene first. And when there are children inside, hero instincts kick into full gear. Where's the kid? Where is the kid? Back bedroom. I tried to smash out the window. Is he good? No. Hey, Kate. Are you in here? Hello. From PD station. Hello. Police. Anyone in there, buddy? Come on, man. Come on, man. What's the kid's name? What's the name? What's the kid's name? MJ. MJ. MJ. Michael. The building was heavily engulfed and the smoke was thick. Climbing inside would be an option. However, the window frame was covered with jagged glass shards. Due to the smoke, unless MJ were standing right in front of the window, it would be nearly impossible to spot him. MJ. MJ. MJ, can you hear me? MJ, come on, buddy. MJ, it's the police. It's okay, buddy. Come on. MJ, can I Hey, MJ, come here. Come on, buddy. NJ, it's okay, buddy. Come on. This way. MJ. MJ, come on. MJ, can you lift me up? Can you Can you hold me? MJ. Hey, you're right here, buddy. Buddy, you're right there. Yeah. [Music] Back up. Did you get him? Yeah. He's right here. Is he down or what? He's right there. He's laying down. MJ, come on. Come here. Come to the window. Take your belt off. MJ was nearly just an arms reach away, but he was scared, stiff. Although they met well, the officer's desperate calls to come toward them were frightening the boy. The officer wanted to attempt one more entry, but the broken glass posed a serious challenge. Thankfully, the fire department showed up just in time. He's right on the right. Right there to your right. We got it here. Watch the top. Watch the top. Mike to your right. Floor to your right. Down to the right. His name's MJ. MJ. MJ. All right, buddy. Come here, buddy. I don't know where he went. He's trying to get him. Get up there. Get up there. H. Get up there. I got him. I got him. I got him. Got him. I got him. I got him. Go. Considering how much smoke was shooting out of the home, the firefighter passed MJ off to the officers just in time. However, the boy wasn't out of danger just yet. Smoke inhilation is the leading cause of injury and death in these types of situations. So MJ needed medical care fast. This way. Watch your hoes. Watch your hoes. You okay, MJ, buddy? Yeah, he's crying. You're okay, MJ? You're doing good, buddy. Stop. Stop. So he can go forward. Still going. He was just crying. Let them clear out. His name is MJ. Michael James or something like that. 3 years old. He's in the back bedroom. Back bedroom. The unit. Get another med. I got a lady next door on oxygen tank now. We're going in after right in that one. Yeah. But the other one was on fire, too. Yep. Yep. They got the That was a seriously close call. If it hadn't been for the quick thinking of the police and fire department, things could have gone south quickly. A similar situation happened on September 10th, 2024 in Bowmont, Texas when the Vidor Police Department dispatch center received a call regarding a residential fire with possible children trapped inside. Is everybody out? Where at? Are they asleep? Officer Stevenson wasted no time when he learned there were two young children trapped inside. He didn't know whether they were awake or unconscious. But it didn't matter at that time. He was only focused on getting them out, even if his life depended on it. Watch out. Come on now, guys. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. How many more? How many more? Right. You okay, guys? You okay? I bumped your head. I bumped your head. You okay? I'm fine. Are you okay? Look at me. You okay? Can you breathe? Look at me. Start doing What's your name? You okay, buddy? You okay? Thank you. You're okay. Okay. I know I bumped your head, but you're okay, right? Sir, I don't care about Okay. Okay. That was close. Thankfully, the boys were still conscious or else Officer Stevenson would have gone through the window and risked his own safety. And talk about some troopers. Even though one of the boys took a nasty hit on the head, he was just thankful that officer Stevenson showed up when he did. A lot of smoke. Okay, but hey, we're going to walk to the ambulance over there on the curb. All right. I got both the kids names, mom's and this lady's name. Okay. What you just I'm pretty sure that can be arranged to be shipped up later some Absolutely. Yeah. No, the one question I want to ask y'all. Yay. all the way back. Okay. Although the fire would eventually destroy the building, at the end of the day, everyone was alive, and that's all that really matters. The family was treated inside the ambulance and considering how close the fire came to the boys, they appeared to be in immaculate condition. Jeep. I don't know if it was the outside, but it looked like what alerted you to I was sleep. I woke up. Hey, you're in the house, too, right? Okay. So, yeah. The boy's mother had no idea how the fire started. Until the inspectors from the fire department combed through the scene, it would remain a mystery. That said, most house fires are the result of faulty electronics. But like the mother said, she believed it might have had something to do with the Jeep. It was a false oxygen like that because carbon monoxide will get So yeah, blood gas blood. So you just want to do that. [Music] They get some names. Maverick. Maverick. Go ahead. Yeah. There's like It's really It's kind of hard to explain, but it's really cool sign. It's almost like magic. Is this the old first ambulance ride? Thanks to the quick thinking of officer Stevenson, both children survived and were transported by ambulance to Christ St. Elizabeth ER for smoke inhilation. On July 11th, 2023, a motorist called 911 after seeing a child in diapers walk from the road toward a pond, fearing that the child had fallen in. By the time deputies arrived on the scene, they decided they had no choice but to wade into the deep, muddy pond to search for the child. Right there on the edge of the water. You see his head? He's just sitting right there on the edge of the water. Okay, that's good. I can't figure out how I've gone all. I'm going to I'm going to get soaked. I'm going to go get him. Come on. Luckily, the deputies quickly spotted the child at the edge of the swamp. If he had fallen in, it could have spelled disaster. Still, if the deputy wanted to reach the child, the officer was going to have to get into the thick of it. So, that's exactly what he did. Hey, buddy. Oh yeah. [Music] Hey buddy, where you at, buddy? Yeah. Yeah. Is he in front of me? Where's he at? Is he in front of me? Just go a little bit further. Come here, buddy. Although a neighbor had reported that the swamp was infested with snakes, the officer did what he had to do. He could deal with a snake bite or two. But what he couldn't deal with was losing a child on his watch around these weeds. [Applause] You buddy. You got him. Yeah. All right. You good? Yeah. You mean to get the I'm sinking in the dirt. You need a tow rope. Uh, you good? We probably could have done that, but I don't think he would have grabbed it. Come on. It's all right, buddy. Come here, buddy. Delta 40, we have the care. We're trying to get him out now. Come on, buddy. All right. That was scary, huh? An autistic boy of that age in diapers alone in a pond is the last thing you want to see. There was no doubt that he was scared and freezing cold. The officers needed to get him on land and dry as soon as possible. And when they did, you could tell that the boy was thankful. She's got a towel, but yours is probably better. [Music] We need swords. Is it better? Oh, yeah. Bit by something else and bit my sleeve. I just kept sinking and sinking and I'm like, I don't know how deep this is going to go. No. Yeah, I I could barely hold him because uh my feet were sinking so deep. It would have been a bad day. The boy was seriously lucky that a motorist happened to be driving by and alerted the police. And thanks to everyone's action that day, the boy was reunited with his family. On August 13th, 2021, Uklid police officers were dispatched to a parking lot following reports that a baby had been accidentally locked in a vehicle on a hot day. Pretty long, dude. How long is the baby? She's sweating pretty bad. How long? Break it. Break it. It can it can get over 100° in that car in a very short amount of time. You got the wedge. As the baby was already showing signs of heat exhaustion, the officers knew they had to act fast. It was hot outside and as heat is magnified within vehicles, it would soon be unbearable for anyone, let alone a baby. If the police couldn't hack their way into the vehicle, they would have no choice but to break the window. Get the FD. Get the FD. Hey, Jason. I can't see. Maybe check out just pressing open. Time was running out and the officer wasn't making any progress with the window pick. And although the baby's mother and relatives were understandably becoming increasingly concerned, the officer needed them to remain calm so he could focus on the task at hand. I hit your lock twice. I hit it twice. Can everybody back up, please? I know. I see you in the middle. Jason, there's a handle right in the back of the car. [Music] I'm not doing this all day with the baby in the car. A2 to 291. Just so you know, we're going to bust out this window. The baby's been here too long. It's sweating. As time was against them, the officers made the decision to skip the picking and get to hitten. With a baby trapped inside, the officers would have to be careful. The last thing they wanted was to spray glass all over the child. I've tried the unlock attempt. It's not working. It's not The button's not working. Yeah. Swing it. Hey, Jason. fire. [Music] [Music] We have an ambulance coming. As predicted, the baby was in distress. However, the hard part was over. After the ambulance arrived on the scene and performed a checkup, as long as she was given the green light, she would be going home with her mom. She's crying. She's crying. Can you just hold her on your shoulder? I'm going to put this under. Uh, can you get her bottle? Okay. 24 hours. She's spitting up a little bit. That's all right. I know. I'm not have this concerned about her. [Music] Oh, is that cold? Hey, baby. We're definitely going to let the paramedics look at her just so make sure she's not dehydrated. That car was extremely hot when I opened it up. So, We got swap, right? Hey, can you get the plate? Yeah, I got my med pack. You're right. It was a worrying situation, but in the end, everything worked out thanks to the quick thinking of the officers. Another quickthinking officer handled a similar situation on May 20th, 2024. Deputies with the Flaggler County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a parking lot after receiving a call from a woman reporting that her daughter had accidentally been locked inside a vehicle. Sheriff's office, did y'all call? Is the caring? Shut up. Shut. Whose car is it? It's mine. All right. Let's see. Is it's not on? No. All right. 145. Our vehicle is not running. They locked the keys in the car. How far is empty? Might have to smash the window here in a second if FD's not close. Just like our last encounter, this officer faced a similar circumstance. A baby was locked inside a car on a hot day while the family desperately waited for help. The fire department was on its way, but it would still take a while. The officer had to make a quick decision whether to wait for them or to break the window and free the child himself. How long has she been in there? [Music] All right, I'm going to smash the window then. I have to cuz he's been stuck in there. I don't know how far he's up. He's been in there for 10 minutes. You don't have You don't have No, I don't have that. Yeah. 214. We're going to have to uh shatter the window. before. Before you're okay with the The officer broke the window that was furthest away from the child to minimize the amount of glass shards falling throughout the vehicle. And although some fragments no doubt hit the child, it was tempered glass which shatters into small tiny cubes with relatively dull edges. [Music] Keep emptying around just to assess the child. We got him out. Although the child was scared, the most important thing was that she was safe and reunited with her family. It was yet another example of a quickinking officer in action. Police officers are heroes who put their own lives on the line for the safety of others. As a society, we need to give them more credit for their service because every day there are examples of heartwarming encounters that show what happens when cops truly care.
