Look at that. By the way, you don't touch somebody. >> Nasty. >> Show me your hands. >> Step out. >> Can I get my >> Not right now. Go downstairs. >> Come here. >> Don't touch me. >> Come here. >> Don't touch me. Don't touch me. Don't touch me. This is why call the cops. What? Cuz you're a >> squatters are a homeowner's worst nightmare. If a property is left unattended in the wrong neighborhood, it's not uncommon for these individuals to move in and claim it as their own. But once an eviction notice has been served, these freeloaders find out what happens when cops surprise the often titled squatters in homes. Hey, you back off. >> About to get pushed. >> No. Stop. >> On December 6th, 2022, police officers responded to a residence following reports that a man was squatting in the new house without authorization. The male suspect said he didn't want to talk to the police, but unfortunately for him, he can't call the shots. The police were able to get inside the home through an unlocked door. >> You need to step outside. >> How you get in my house? >> You need to step outside. >> How do you get in my house? >> It's not your house. Get outside. >> This is my house. >> It's not your house. >> Yes, it is. >> Then show me your ID. >> I'm looking for it, but I will. Oh, >> I didn't go. >> Get the off real bad. >> What's going to happen is you are going to step outside, right? You hear me? >> The officers weren't playing. Abe, the suspect, already wasted enough of their time, insisting they had no right to be there and refusing to answer basic questions. But once the officer gained entry and saw an opportunity, they didn't hold back. All right. To be here >> now. >> Okay, fine. Don't >> me back off. >> You're about to get punched, right? >> No. >> Stop. >> Grab. >> Lay down. >> Grab the other arm. >> Put your arm out. >> Put your other arm behind your back. Where the man first? [Music] >> Yeah. >> It was a textbook example of how effective a taser can be. The jolt dropped Abe instantly, giving officers the chance to safely secure him in cuffs. It was a justified use of non-lethal force and one that could have been avoided entirely if he had simply complied with lawful commands. >> All you got to do is come outside. >> Oh, >> no. No. I have to come in here and close the door. That's not how this rolls. >> That's not how that rolls. >> Don't >> What are you doing? >> You're not rolling back over. You're going to stay right there. Unbelievable. >> That's unbelievable. >> You literally couldn't just come outside. >> Huh? >> You couldn't just come outside. >> You came in. >> Yeah. And I told you to go outside. You decided to start grabbing at me. >> I wasn't grabbing on you. >> Taser. >> The officer was right. Abe had every opportunity to make better decisions. But once he re-entered the property and closed the door, all bets were off. >> So, here's one thing I'm gonna tell you right now. I'm gonna sit you on your >> Yeah. Yeah. Come on. >> Don't you start moving. >> Listen to me. You're going to listen before you start moving. Do you understand? Or else she'll lay right there. What's going to happen is I'm going to roll you on. You're going to sit down. If you start acting squirly again, those probes are still in you. She's going to hit you again. Do you understand me? >> Okay. Go ahead and roll over towards me, please. >> This way. No, you you were No, no, no, no, no. You're done. You were about to spit on me. >> No. I heard you hawk and ali. You're staying right there now. >> Where am I bleeding from? >> On the side of your head. >> How? >> What? >> How? >> There's a small cut. >> There's a small cut on top. >> Okay. So, I look, why are you rescuing me? >> Stop. >> Why are you stopping me first? >> Stop trying to move around. Stay right here. After I put all my hard work in my home, I said the house where the hell you going first thing in the morning. >> Ain't that crazy? I got blood on my floor all over my face while I was dipping down on the floor with my head. He attacked me. >> The taser caused his body to go limp and when he fell, he wasn't able to use his hands to protect himself. As a result, he hit his head on the ground and it bled. The officers wanted to roll him into the recovery position while they awaited EMS, but they were concerned about his reaction. >> If if we start to roll you, are you going to split blood? >> I won't let him do anything intentionally towards you. >> I would rather >> as long as you can breathe. >> Okay. At this point, I I don't think I need to advise you on anyway that you're currently under arrest. Okay. >> For what? >> Okay. Well, obviously the fact that the deputy hadn't tased you, we're going to start with a minimum of resisting. >> Resisting what? >> Obstruction. Um, and you're not supposed to be in this house. >> How do you figure? >> Okay. Well, we're going to conduct investigation. Before we do anything, I'm going to advise you of what your rights are. Okay. The officer read Abe his Miranda rights. They wanted to know how on earth he figured he had the right to be staying in a home that wasn't his. But Abe invoked his right to remain silent. >> Abe. >> Hey, my name's Felix. I'm going to be the paramedic taking care of you today. Okay. So, it looks like you got a bit of a laceration on your head. >> Can I get a mask? Sit up. >> Y. Perfect. Thank you. stretcher pelican box. >> You've got a small cut inside your arm, right? >> I promise you it's a small cut. >> I'm going to get that all wiped up for you, Abe. Okay. >> Huh? >> The head. >> Yeah, your head. We're going to get your head wiped out. >> Yeah. >> I'm going to get you up to the hospital. We're going to take you to Short Point. Okay. >> Abe was in pain, but he had no one to blame but himself. You can't get into a shoving match with police officers and expect them not to take you down aggressively. The only thing left to do was transport him to the hospital. Next step is getting him up onto the stretcher. >> Um, >> I still got blood coming down my eyes. >> We'll get that. I just >> Where? >> Right there. >> Okay. >> What else could that be? >> And away from the eye. [Music] You can take the uh >> this how it's done >> and then and then take them out of their home. This is not how it's done. >> We're going to get baseline vitals. Get something. [Music] Abe was transported to the hospital where he received stitches and was cleared to be taken to jail. By that time, his mood had already lightened, and he seemed to have accepted the fact that the officers were just doing their job. >> Stuff in the car. >> That's just some of her stuff. >> I don't want to ride around. She's blowing it out. >> She's actually another personal items. I don't know if you guys >> search up to sir. >> Not right at the moment. You got towel, property, a backpack. >> Is that your backpack? >> I mean, this is this is ridiculous. >> Can I Can I look through to see what they have in there? Hygiene. >> You have my mop in there. >> Got my credit card in there. >> Get a little You got a boyfriend in this county or whatever. That aggressive, huh? Looking at him for me. Never going to happen. Just look to your left for me. I'm going to get grab the seat belt for you. Just look to your left for me real quick. >> Abe was charged with trespassing and resisting arrest with violence. He was sentenced to 364 days behind bars. On April 15th, 2023, police officers were dispatched to a parking garage following reports that a pack of squatters had claimed it as their own. What's going on today? >> Not too much. What? What the hell is this thing? >> I'm just trying to build a little party. >> I'll get I'll get everything. >> Got you. You got an ID on your part. >> Thank you, brother. Sorry. >> The officers ided the squatters who were still mostly polite and cooperative with just a few crazy ones. They informed them that they had received a lot of complaints about drug use, property damage, the mess, and of course, the fact that they simply didn't have permission to live there. >> Sorry, I'm not trying to make a mess. I'll send everything out. Just one more time. Sorry. >> So, the reason that we're out here with you is because of this stuff, okay? It's blocking egress. >> I'll get it moved out >> cuz we got cameras and stuff and we got people watching and we can't, you know, that's why we're out here. >> I'll get it moved out right now. >> What are we doing with you? >> Backing up. >> Thank you. And um you guys have a 24-hour notice pay. >> I got the resource pay. >> You guys been given one of these before? >> There were literally squatters on all levels, and some weren't as compliant as others. Life is hard. Rent and mortgage payments are through the roof, and basic living expenses aren't cheap either. However, that didn't give the squatters the right to take over private property. >> What's up, dudes? >> What's up? What's up? >> I can't be in here. >> Oh, you can't be in here. >> Damn it. What about Frankie though? He's got no place to go, bro. >> Where are we supposed to work for him? You know what I'm saying? >> Can't do it here. All right, I'm all out of 20 minutes. >> You can't build up. >> You got an ID on your partner? >> Who? >> Me? >> No. >> What's up? You want to turn around for us? Baseball. >> Why am I going to jail? >> Going to jail. >> Say you're going to jail. >> I You got anything to poke me? >> No. >> You got to go on it just >> No, I should. >> What? That means you do. Where's the notepad then? >> I don't. >> Okay. Well, the average person says no to that question. That I don't know. >> Only thing I have is that CBD dad. Okay. >> While the officers were searching the suspect, they could hear a woman screaming and shouting from inside the elevator. Drug use, homelessness, and mental health issues go hand in hand. >> What's her deal? >> I don't know. She's been going like this since she disappeared. >> Anything? >> No. >> Nothing. >> No, there shouldn't be. >> What do you mean there shouldn't be there? There isn't. There isn't. >> Nothing. >> Okay. Just stay over here by appreciate cooperation. >> Can I finish getting my stuff ready to go? >> Yeah, you can start packing that stuff up. >> Why am I going to jail? Just calm down. As long as you stay cool, you're not going to jail. >> I'm not trying to pick on you, dude. >> Because >> that's what my sergeant said on the camera. >> What? >> That you were hot piping. >> No. >> Is she up there by herself? >> Yes. >> Wait. The screaming began to intensify, putting the officers on high alert. As a result, the officers pushed open the elevator doors. And when they did, they weren't ready for what awaited them on the other side. >> Can you stop? I didn't mean >> I stopped going for I need to stop. >> I need to be >> I am the worst person. I know. >> I'm so sorry. [Music] >> The woman Ashley was in the middle of a serious mental breakdown. If she really wanted to get high before the officers could confiscate her supply, she would have done so quietly out of sight. So, her screaming was most likely a cry for help. Going to jail for sure. Relax. >> DC battery. >> Throwing dope in my face is not going to be a good thing. >> Oh no. [Music] >> Kicking. I swear to God. I did not kick you. >> Doing it. >> You're going to get hurt. >> Okay. >> I didn't say that. >> Okay, then relax. Don't kick this and it won't kick you. >> All right. >> Respect. Okay. Deal. >> He'll take his leg off and you kick that. >> Deal. >> You promised. [Music] >> What was in the tin foil? [Music] roll over. >> I'll help you. [Music] >> Come on. Sit up. >> Stand up. >> I know you're sorry. Hey, what's up [Music] [Music] I don't see anything wrong. >> Nothing. >> After she was secured in the back of the police cruiser, the only thing left for the cops to do was transport her to the police station for further processing. Like the officer said earlier, she was definitely headed to jail. >> I'm fine. She just tried to rub it over my face. >> You okay? >> So, I don't know what's in there. >> Where'd she at? >> Try to rub it on my face on this side. >> Hold on. Hold on. Any powder? >> I don't know. >> She was trying She's trying to smoke it. I tried to grab her and she slipped around with tried to get me in the face. I don't know if she got me or not. I didn't feel it hit me, but doesn't mean it wasn't powder. Not feeling it right now. >> I don't know. I'm lightheaded cuz I'm pissed. But >> I'll stay with him. >> I'll stay with him. Medical check. I'll take her to the hospital. >> Excuse me. She's got those on. Check that elevator bay. I think she ate off. If it's burnt dope on it, let me know. >> There. She's got like other stuff in it. You want the ID card and everything else out of there, too? That's hers. Might as well put in the case so have to come back and say this. >> Thank you. >> Ashley was arrested and charged with attempted battery on an officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and secondderee recklessly endangering safety. On December 8th, 2024, police officers received a report about a woman who took care of her aging friend with dementia. However, she had ulterior motives. After he passed two years ago, she continued living in his home, which quickly turned into a legal nightmare when his granddaughter finally tried to take ownership. >> We've been in a long ongoing battle um over the home and the neglect of my grandfather that's obviously now a parent in the four unfortunate children who are involved in this case. Um, I was recent recently uh told that Amanda is attempting to get a woman named Bianca Carter, who is an aranged um niece of my grandfather who has no legal rights to the house and who was also part of the con. Um is trying to get her to come to the house to uh take items. And so he he passed away um two years ago. And again, like I mentioned, the deed He was 106 and had dementia and they like conned the out of him. Like I can't even begin to tell you the amount of con artistry happening here, >> right? >> Um >> the owner of the house is technically deceased and the last legal owner is myself and my aunt and my uncle. >> Like if you follow the deed trail, we are the last legal owners and we've been trying to fight for this house through this con for years. >> So the whole time she was squatting the house and nobody like ever said anything about it. Was that the deal? >> Well, we we were saying stuff about it. I mean, we've been speaking with our lawyers and going through this whole process with our lawyers, but because it's so complicated, >> there's nothing really that the police could do because it's like this big ongoing court battle with like >> like layers and layers of deeds being transferred back and forth and back and forth and then ultimately to our family and then post-dated. Like I can't even begin to explain how heartbreaking and tiresome and complicated this has been. As the caller was the legal homeowner, the officer advised her to take the matter to court and get the squatter evicted from the property. From there, she could change the locks to ensure the woman wouldn't be able to regain entry. It didn't feel like justice, but as the officer explained, as police officers, they can't do much. It was a matter for the courts to decide. >> But then an eviction technically allows her to have time to remove stuff from the property, right? and she removing my grandfather's personal >> her property she has to move in the house but what what can happen is we can be present we'll be present when she goes like she has like 15 minutes to get what she needs to grab and be at the house that be more of a civil standby >> okay so we could potentially have like you as well as one of our family members be there to make sure that she's not taking personal items if there's anything left >> right it'll be hey this belongs to the grandfather okay you not touch this cuz this is not yours It stays here. >> All right. Okay. Thank you so much. >> You're welcome. >> All right. Byebye. >> Although the officer's hands were tied due to a mixture of squatterers rights and an ongoing court case, the terrible conditions of the home and the presence of drugs, weapons, and children enabled them to launch an investigation. >> Hey, man. 213. >> Hey, can I talk to you real quick? >> Am I in trouble? >> Well, no, but we need to have a talk. >> All right, let's come out here. Is there anybody home right now? >> I don't need the kids. >> There's just the three of them right now. >> Yeah. Am I going to jail? >> Um, yeah. That's why we're going to walk this way and I want to get you out of the kids. Hey, come on. Come on. >> Why am I going to jail? >> So, I'm going to explain that here in a minute. All right. And we're going to get out of sight of your kids. I'm going to give you that respect. All right. Can I at least have my daughter bring me my phone so that way I can call somebody? >> What am I going to jail for? >> You're going to go to jail on four counts. Child abuse. >> Okay. And I'm going to explain that. >> I was cleaning last night. I literally was >> Well, >> squatter's rights are a real headache. States that enforce them prioritize the rights of perpetrators over the rights of the legal homeowners. Even though Amanda was heading to jail, it was for child neglect, not for the pain and suffering she caused the homeowner. >> All right. So, what's going to happen? I'm going to take you to the jail. It's >> four four counts of felony child abuse. Okay. One, as a mother, you're supposed to provide adequate >> I was cleaning the house. You >> adequate care for your children. I don't think you've met that level based on our observations yesterday. And just the culmination of everything. I I don't I >> I literally wasable and negligent. >> Can you please listen for me a minute? Call Brian Chavez. >> All right. Well, I'm going off my observations. Okay. >> I know. I'm being serious. Call Brian Chavez. Brian Chavez is >> That's why I'm telling you DC case manager is Brian Chavez. >> I've talked to DCF up this morning. My investigation based on my observations yesterday. Okay. >> Call Leilani. >> Call Lean. She literally took pictures the day before. >> Okay. Can will you please and then maybe you'll have a different change. You'll have a change of heart. I'm being serious. Call Laneie. >> I believe I do believe you're going to want to improve your situation and I hope you do. >> I literally was I was I actually was cleaning today. I actually had a good start. >> I've been here several times. Okay. It is never you can say you're cleaning now but I've never seen this property. >> All right. But >> and it's basically to collect it conducted. Okay. It's not cuz one day or any particular day. >> There was nothing Amanda could do to talk her way out of it. She was led down the street to a police cruiser where she was searched, placed in the back, and read her Miranda rights. >> I'm going to be honest with you, just leaving yesterday like and just all my observations. >> That's strictly what this is based off is observations. You know, I hope that >> whatever comes of this >> Can you answer that? That's my son. >> Can you please, please? I need to know what's going on. >> Hang on. >> Whatever comes of this, I hope you guys get to a better spot. Okay, but this is where it's going to stop. >> Please, that's my son. I'm begging you. Please. >> That's my son. >> I I right now I'm not permitted to answer phones like that. Amanda needed to stop talking and start listening. Police officers don't find pleasure in arresting mothers and just leaving their children alone. Even though the officer wasn't required to, he allowed the woman to make a call. >> Are you allowing me to get your phone? >> Yes. >> How do I do this? >> Um, just his >> Hold on. Let me leave a message. >> Hey, Richard. I'm getting arrested. I need you to come get Mutley and the and the cats, please. >> Worst case scenario, Amanda, they'll go to the mate society here and they'll take care of them until you get out. >> I mean, they're >> they're not going to like give your dogs away or put them up for adoption or anything like that. So, they're not, you know, they're not taking they're going to hold them like kind of >> Yeah. Well, the house is in it. >> You just got to let us know how many animals there are cuz >> I do know there's the cat that's in the pen is the one that I let outside. You can let her out. I just >> just leave her out. >> You can leave her out. Just make sure she has food and water. >> Um, >> can you let my kids know I love them? >> Yeah, we'll tell them. >> I'm not a mean person, so you don't have to worry about that. >> Amanda, I've How long have I been working with you? Think about it. I remember when your kid got hit with the seat belt buckle on the bus. I came out and did that report. I was there when >> And he's still been hit by again. >> I was there when I guess the that 106 year old friend of yours that passed away. Not a bone in my body thinks you're a bad person. >> Okay. I do think you're in need of some help. I do think things need to change. >> Although the officer didn't think Amanda was a bad person, it was clear he wasn't familiar with the fraud case against her. He didn't realize the 106-year-old friend he mentioned was actually the man Amanda had defrauded after his death. >> I'm going to tell you this, okay? >> No case manager. No other person's going to make this stuff better or change it. >> I was She was just out the day before. >> She was out the day before with Family Home Builders and she took pictures and she goes, "You need I want this done by the time I come back on Monday." So, >> so we were working together to to make a plan for everybody everything to get done. >> Well, and there's a culmination of things going on. I do think you've had a rough year. I understand that. Um, but and I get it's not easy, but there's also some things. It's got you got to try harder. As my supervisor even said, you got to try harder. >> And there's some things that you need to step it up on. Okay. And and my genuine hope, okay, from the bottom of my heart is that it starts here, okay? And I hope >> it's not because I just lost my the two little ones permanently. You don't understand >> litigation case against them to prove I'm not mother. You just gave every single piece of case to them. >> No, I'm holding you accountable for what I believe you need to be held accountable for. Okay. >> In the end, she was charged with four counts of child neglect. Later, she was separately charged with theft by deception of an elderly victim. On November 27th, 2024, Davenport deputies responded to a call from a property manager claiming that a woman had broken into an apartment that he was hired to fix. According to the manager, the suspect gained access to the property by stacking random junk outside the building, then jumping through a window. >> Not that apartment anymore. That's what they're all empty. >> Is this entire building vacant? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Check that apartment there. a few apartments in here. >> The officers went through the complex clearing rooms one by one in search of the suspect. The officers had no way of knowing if she was armed or not or what kind of mental state she was in. We got something here. >> Hey. Yeah. >> What are you doing? >> Laying here when the church's open. >> Huh? >> Door's open. There's no signs. You can't come in here. >> Do you live here? >> Villa let me in. A black guy. >> Where you? Who you? Who is it? >> Bill. >> Bill. >> Yeah. >> Bill. What? >> I don't mean by Villa from the church. >> Villa. >> What's your name? >> Tella. Do you have an ID on you? >> No. >> What' you say your name was? >> Ta. Well, there's no time that came up here. >> You live here? >> Well, he brought me up here, so I didn't know. >> How did you What did you say your first name was? >> T L A >> T E L L A. >> What's your last name? >> I have one. That's my full name. Just that. >> T E L L A. >> That's just it. >> That's just your name. >> Ta claimed that she had entered the building with a friend through an unlocked door. She didn't know the officers already knew how she really got in. Her claim that she didn't have a last name was suspicious enough, but what she said next was even weirder. >> Happy day of birth. >> Happy birthday. >> I don't do the birthday. I don't celebrate my birthday. Okay. >> So, when I take you to jail, you're going to go as Jane Doe. >> Why are you taking me to jail? >> Cuz you're trespassing. >> There's no sign. Someone brought me in here. >> Do you live here? >> He brought me in here. >> I don't care. You don't live here. >> Well, I didn't know that. Well, when you walk into an apartment and there's nobody in here and you're sleeping in a closet. >> He said I can come in here. >> Then you know you don't live here. >> Well, he said I can come in here, so I didn't know. >> Okay. Well, clearly you know because you're sleeping in a closet. >> He brought me up here. I didn't know I couldn't be up here. He didn't say I couldn't. >> What's your birthday? >> I don't have one. Won't you get him? So I >> How about this? [Music] You're under. >> I don't care where you're supposed to go. You're going to go here. >> Tell us your name. We're just going to go do >> the officers lifted Tela onto her feet and escorted her out of the building and into a cruiser. Despite claiming she had entered the complex with a male acquaintance, when the officers asked if he was on the premises, she refused to tell them. >> I think they have both of those. >> You all right? >> No, I want just lay down. >> Okay. Well, you can lay down in jail. >> Lay down to lay down. >> Okay. This could have been a lot easier, man. You don't have any warrants. probably could just give me a piece of paper. >> I don't have a name. I don't want one. >> You do have a name. >> No, I don't. I don't want a name. I ain't that right. Not a thing. I don't have to. >> Well, now you do. >> No, I don't. >> Okay, hang tight. >> With her secured in the back of the police cruiser, the officers searched the other areas of the building. The officers knew that squatters typically travel in packs and judging from the size of the building alone, it was more than likely that more squatters were inside. >> All right. >> Yeah, we're uh one's clear. This one, whatever this number is, >> that must be two. We just cleared this. Yeah. Let's go upstairs. Police department. This the last one we checked. Then >> it went across the hall. Oh, >> but everything else is good, right? >> What's that? >> Everything upstairs, right? >> Yeah. >> Huh? >> Check these rooms here. >> Yeah, she was sleeping in like a closet like this downstairs. Okay, that's better. >> And then there's a And she's like, "Somebody let me in name Bella." >> Bella, I think you She kept saying Bella. I think I think that's what she was saying. Bella or something. >> Okay. >> And I said, "What's your name?" She said, "Tella." I was like, "Okay, now we're now we're being silly." >> Yeah. She was in here. Look at this little spot she was sleeping in. She was curled up right there. >> And then she starts to leave and turns she turns into him. the other, you know, they got hit out there and >> and she's like, he's like, "You ain't leaving." And then she starts freaking fighting him. I'm like, "Great." We tried to get downstairs, but this is all busted. And >> you think you think there's a way to get in from another side or >> Well, it's all screwed. It's all screwed shut. >> So, we should >> I don't know. He probably left out somewhere. I don't think he's in here anymore. if other squatters were indeed staying in the complex, they weren't there anymore by that time. The officer spoke to the property manager who provided them with an account of how he had been alerted to the presence of squatters on the property. >> I guess the city's been on them about the garbage in the yards. So, we came up to do that and then I seen that person going through the window. So, I'm going to go in and I'm going to screw all the windows shut. Not that that's going to stop them. It'll uh they'll just kick the window in, but they're paying me to do the work on them, so I'm gonna do it, you know. >> Yeah, absolutely. So, you saw her go through that window over there? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Was it her or was that something else? It >> I thought it was a black guy. It's probably the hat and the coat pulled up. >> Oh, you having luck trying to figure out who she is? >> No, no, she's >> still squirly. >> She's 96, >> I think. Um, yep. Doesn't have a name. uh said that she wants the death penalty and >> she wants the death penalty. death penalty and >> oh yeah we have to let the jail figure out who she is if they can otherwise why they just book her as Jane do and then >> um so >> so what we want to do we want to do uh Solivan peace officer or you want to do >> interference >> no injury I'm good >> um >> so Solomon peace officer because she was swinging at you and trying to hit you >> and then uh interference >> yep oh uh I guess she wasn't formally trespassed but I mean >> she should have known she don't belong in there I I mean, >> yeah, they had to break in. So, >> they had to climb to your window, so you know you're clearly trespassing. >> Yep. Let's do it. >> Yeah, >> I'm with those three. >> Okay, brother. >> The officers transported Tela to the police station for further processing. If she continued to refuse to provide them with her name and date of birth, they would have to fingerprint her in an attempt to get a positive identification. >> You sick want to die somebody? You're nasty. Disgusting. >> Touch. Should you touch somebody? >> You're nasty. Ain't no touch. [Music] >> Have a seat on the back. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Ta was booked in the Scott County Jail where she was charged with interference with official acts, assault on a peace officer and trespass. passing. On September 3rd, 2024, police were dispatched to a condemned home following reports that squatters had illegally moved in. When they responded to the scene, they spotted a woman exiting the residence and she claimed that no one else was inside. >> All right, it's time to shine. So, it's like everything else. Award, please. If anybody's in here, make yourself known right now. >> Got to close the door on my right stairs to my left. >> All right. So, what do you what do you think we should do? >> Close the door. Okay. >> So, one on me. >> Okay. >> Door here. >> Yes, sir. >> Sweeping a home can be dangerous. But officers are trained for scenarios like this. For one rookie on the team, it was a realworld training opportunity for him. As the officers were checking the first floor, they suddenly heard noises coming from upstairs. Hey, come on out. Akan police. Show me your hands first. >> Oh, hi. >> Okay, come on down. >> I'm here to clean the house and knows I'm here. >> Okay. Is there anybody else in here? >> Uh, my baby daddy's upstairs. >> Okay. Well, tell him to come to What's his name? >> Uh, Dying. >> The what? >> Dying. Are we looking for someone? >> Yes. But you're also in a condemned house at the moment. >> Yeah, the Nando told me to stay in here and I put up the boards. I could call him. >> Dave, come on down. >> Dy, I can >> No, you're not going back up there. Diren, come on down. >> Come on. >> Come here. >> Oh, >> you know you're in a bacon, right? >> Yeah. The N knows we're here. I can go get my phone. You can talk. >> Come on down real quick. >> Am I sure? >> Well, that's what we're figuring out because she's saying you're supposed to be in here, but >> we're cleaning up. >> This is also a actual condemned house. >> I have to go get my phone and get his number. You could call him and ask him. >> Stand over here real quick. >> If the woman was indeed a cleaner like she claimed. She should have been fired a long time ago cuz that house was pretty messy. Next, the couple hesitantly informed the officers that they didn't think anybody else was upstairs. >> Akan police, come on out. Come on. >> Come on. You're in a vacant. Let's go. >> Vacant house. >> What's that? >> Well, it's a vacant condemned house by the actual city. >> Come on. >> We got to talk to the lady. She talks to the uh >> Okay, then we're going to handle that. But come on. >> We have all our stuff on. Okay, sir. Come on down. >> Oh, he didn't talk yet. His name's Matt. >> Yeah, his name's Matt. He didn't talk. >> Anybody else in here? >> Downstairs, the woman kept ranting about how the landlord gave them permission to stay in the house. However, since the house had been condemned by the city, there was definitely no landlord. With three squatters found, the officers continued their search. >> That's right. Where'd you see him? Here, >> show me your hands. >> Step out. >> Can I get my one? >> Not right now. Go downstairs. >> Any weapons or anything on you? >> Mahoney, we got one coming down. >> What was that? >> Police, come out. >> For what? >> Come out. >> What? >> What was that? >> A police. Show your hands. >> Both hands. Come on out. Is there anyone else up there with you? No. >> Just a dog? >> Yeah. >> You got any weapons or anything on you? All right. Go down. Go downstairs. Is the dog tied up or is it loose? >> Huh? >> Is the dog tied up or is it loose? >> It's It's a cage. >> The suspect's attempts to feain ignorance were laughable. They pretended to be startled as if they hadn't heard officers announcing themselves while clearing the house room by room. The squatters knew the police were there. They were just trying to hide from them. Who is the actual landlord supposed to be? What's his name? >> Um, I know his name is Matt. He's been texting me, but um I don't know his last name. He's been texting me. He's saying to clean up and that's what I've been doing. >> Don't get me wrong, is the guy who's doing the work for the landlord. >> No, he said he owned the house >> and >> that's how I have the text messages to show you what he told me. >> Yeah. >> So, I didn't know. I was just doing what he told me to do. >> One of two things was going on. It's either the woman was just making up an imaginary landlord or someone pretended to be a landlord so he could con squatters into paying him cheap rent as long as they clean the place. During the confusion, the officers determined that some of the suspects had warrants. >> What's your name? >> Okay, put your hands behind your back. We got to go out. Yep. You got a warrant. >> Me for what? >> Sounds like you got a couple more. One of which is breaking and entering. So, >> breaking where? >> That's what we'll let you know here in a second, but that's what they're telling us. >> Yeah, you must have one. I don't I broke. Did you give her your correct information? >> Yeah. >> Then we'll let you know here in a second. I promise you have a warrant for a couple things. >> So, >> no. I didn't break nowhere. I didn't do anything. >> Switch these cuffs out for you. Okay. >> It's out of B& and Grand Theft >> year. >> I never did that. Somebody stole my I never stole anything. >> Okay. Okay. Well, >> where is it? From where? >> It's somewhere over on the east side. >> I've never been on the east side. >> You said it's showing you gave my partner that information and that's the name and with your photo that's pulled up with all that stuff. It's showing that you have that warrant. All right. >> Take one big step and watch your head. Okay. >> Oh boy. >> Be careful. >> Once we get going, there's a little blue strap behind there. Hold on to that. I got to put over this crossbar. >> I didn't do anything. >> Can I take my boyfriend? >> With two suspects secured in the back of police vehicles, the officers returned inside the condemned home to talk to the remaining squatters. Although they didn't have outstanding warrants, all of them would have to leave the property. >> Get a hold of them. Figure out what's going on. She does all that. >> Yeah. >> His lady >> because like listen >> at the same time, you know, like I talked about previously, something's not right with the house. So, you know, we're trying to work with you guys about not just kicking you out. >> How much time do you have? >> Well, I mean, it sounds like it sounds like you guys have some time. So, just be smart about it. Um, you know, just work work with the landlord about trying to figure out what's what's going on >> and make sure you have a plan B just in case. >> Yeah. >> All right, guys. [Music] >> Which one's your >> So, you have a warrant for breaking entering. I don't know the details of like what because it could have been a shed or it could have been a vacation. >> No, I never broke the lane. >> That's what it it's it's that it's from literally probably a month or two ago from what it looks like based off the report number. >> No, that's a lie. >> That's what you got to get a code for. Let them know and then they'll figure it out. The two female suspects were arrested and booked on their warrants, while the remaining squatters were given an unspecified amount of time to arrange a new living situation. On March 26th, 2024, police officers were dispatched to an apartment complex after the building manager called the police to report that a squatter had taken over a unit. But while most squatting calls involve arguments, swearing, and tasers, this one was a little different. >> People get evicted out of here. >> Hey, how you doing? >> Hello. So, what are you doing in there? >> I was just, >> you know, let me get my stuff. >> She's about to go in jail, buddy. >> Hold up. Hold up, boss. >> It ain't going nowhere. >> What you getting? >> Nothing. I was about to put my clothes on if you guys don't want to. Come on. Going straight to jail. >> All right. We're going to talk. Hold on. Hold on. Hold up. Hold up. I'm going to give my partner the phone. Okay. >> All right. Is it just you here? >> Yes, sir. >> Because he made sudden movements, the officers deemed it best to detain the suspect for good measure. It was still unclear how long the man had been there and how he had gained entry. And until the officers figured out what was going on, he needed to stay in cuffs. >> Anybody else? >> How'd you get in here? >> Uh, is it anywhere I can get the stuff that I own here? >> What's up? >> Can I just get the stuff that I own here? I'm sorry. I mean, I just I'm just in a real bad position right now. the way >> trespassing. >> We're going to ask you a question real fast. My mother kicked me out and by the same way though, there's no way that I can ask you guys for help in between. I came to to the um to the police station and everything, ask for help. I was looking for houser, but they told me I couldn't go down to Algertown. They said I couldn't get a room in the other place or anything. No, sir. Like, I've been really trying to get my life together. I'm facing now. I'm trying to get a job and stuff. >> I'm not a social worker, man. I don't know as far as like that stuff goes. >> It sounded like the man was trying to get his life in order. But like the officer said, he wasn't a social worker and couldn't help the man. His job is to uphold the law. And presently, the man was breaking it by squatting in an apartment that wasn't his. >> Oh my god. >> You want to see if we can get these on? Can I get Can I Can I just show you guys what I need from back there if I possibly get that from back there? >> We have no place to put it. The county won't take it. >> They can take the bags, can't they? So, they won't take that. >> They take personal property like what's it? >> So, why would I have to go through this if I'm just trying to get my life together though, guys? Like, I couldn't get no super sweet job like you got, you know what I'm saying? To just come in here and take somebody away, kidnap them. But I'm saying what the what the reason for me into stay there. >> If you ever got kicked out of your mother house, where did she go from there? if she didn't care or anything like that. >> Yes, dude. I I lived out of my car for a while. I didn't break into a house >> and then they moved the car. They towed the car, bro. I couldn't stay there no more. You know what I'm saying? I'm not trying to be a jerk to anybody, man. I really need not to be arrested, though. >> That's That's too late for that, man. Too late. >> Should we go get my pans and stuff back there, my wallet, and things like that? >> Where's your wallet at? >> Thank you. Can I show you? >> Yeah. >> Just the wallet, though. No, no, no. Just the wallet. Where's the wallet at? [Music] I need those pans right here. Can I get these whole pans? >> Where's the wallet? >> Those pans right there. What's >> in these pants? >> Yeah, I need the whole pans. I need the pans and everything in there. And look, guys, this I'm not trying to grab anything stupid or nothing. Look, it's all my stuff right here in these two bags. Mine. >> That's >> I need it though. Like, >> maybe they could do something with it, but we can't take it. No, they don't take it with the county. I'll tell you that right now. And I need this stuff over here like my cell phone and stuff like >> I'll grab your cell phone and my my charger and my Bluetooth. Come on. Like please guys, please. And then like my expensive my >> Where's your Oh my god. >> Where's your cell phone? >> It's in You left it on the couch. >> Okay. In the charger. >> I need >> Hold on. Hold on. >> The suspect wanted the officers to pack up his belongings so he could take them with him. What he was planning to do with all his stuff once he got to the jail was anyone's guess. Police officers don't double as movers. Nevertheless, they sympathize with the suspect and did their best to help. >> We're being real cool with you. >> And I'm trying not to be at all, guys. I really I'm trying to get my life together, man. >> If you could just help me at any point, man, I would really appreciate that. >> So that at this point, that's a little out of our hands. I'm trying though, guys. I haven't been doing anything illegal for real because I've been kicked out of my old house. I've been kicked out of there, man. Like, >> earrings, I'm putting them in your wallet. You see this? >> Oh my god. >> Hey, what are you doing? >> I'm uncomfortable real >> patience is done. >> See this there's water like >> Please don't hurt me though. Please. I'm not hurting you, bro. I just need >> like my Bluetooth hurt. >> We got your charger. We got your wallet. We got your earrings. >> Every time the officers picked something up, the man remembered something else he needed to take with them. He said that he couldn't help them pack things up because he had a broken hand, but he was in cuffs anyway, and the officers weren't letting him out of them. >> They threw me away. I need these balls to squeeze my hand to get my hand back together. People been trying to fight me everywhere I've been going. I need my mouth guard, too, cuz it's helping me to sleep at night. If you >> You're not going to have that in the jail. >> Can you just put it in my bag at least then? So, it's at least with me when I'm going to get >> Can't take your bag with you what you have on >> for that, though. Like my body club over here, my other my gloves, my winter gloves, my bandanas and stuff. Could you just put it in there? Right there. I'm not trying, man. >> Hold on. >> I'm sorry too, man. Cuz I didn't >> put his pants on or just What are we going to do about this? We have to take his shoes back off. >> No, you can just keep those pants cuz I'm going to count. >> Well, you don't want the pants. Okay. No pants. >> The suspect was already treating the officers like his personal moving service. But like the officer said, there was no way he could take his stuff with him where he was going. >> I just needed my life to get >> Where's your mom? >> It could across the street. >> What apartment? >> Across the street. I can go to my mom's. >> What is your No, I'm taking your stuff to your mom's. I can do that. Okay. She She lives across the street. Maybe you could take it across the street and we could just bag it all up. She lives across the street. >> We're going to do at a later time. We're going to take care of you first. >> Okay. >> Okay. Now, what do you need to take to your mom's? >> Everything else. >> What? What? What if everything >> Can I just pack it up if you guys don't mind? >> We're not going to We're not going to take the cuffs off. >> Okay. >> Here. Put this off. >> What What in here is yours? >> Uh if you if you wouldn't mind wrapping it for me, Steve, if you like just this these two pink balls. All these these things right here. What do you need the balls for? >> My hand is broke, sir. And if you look like see my pinky right here. >> Wait, is this your bag right here with the What is this thing? >> My uh it's a respirator mask for a BB gun. We was playing in the operation me and my friends had. You know what I'm saying? >> Is these your bags? >> Yes, sir. >> These are your bags? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. That's That's what you need. >> And the other little stuff you can just pack it up. And could you just feed me some of that water, please? Cuz I'm very very thirsty. If you don't mind feeding me some of that water. >> That's one. Is it water? >> Yes, it's straight water. Straight water, sir. Could you just feed me some water, please? >> All right. This is it. and we're going. >> The man was quickly becoming the neediest squatter in the universe. No wonder his mom kicked him out. If he had any sense of responsibility, he'd call a friend from jail to pick up his stuff so the officers wouldn't have to waste any more time. >> And that other um that other bag right there with my clippers inside cuz I've been trying to find a way to go do my clippers. >> All right. Thank you. >> You good? >> And if you just throw that in the bag and and put the clippers in there in the bag. >> I tell you what. >> Well, you're going downtown. >> If you could put what? What's that bag over there? >> My go That's not >> What's that bag? That's not yours. >> That's junk. So, you just want this right here. >> And those things. I'll throw it all in the box. Take >> I'll come back and get it. You give me your mom's address after we're done with you. I can take it over to your mom's house. >> 31. >> I don't know if she's going to answer the door. You might have to leave it out there. >> Okay, I'll get you address. Okay, let's go. >> And could you just pick up that stuff and put it in there? I mean, >> everything that he believes. >> All right. >> 231. >> Yep. >> And that toothbrush bag here. Like that toothbrush in there. I >> hear you. >> I would think long and hard. Sorry. before you give the same story to the judge. >> It sounded like the man truly wanted to change, but his actions showed that he still had a long way to go. On January 8th, 2024, police officers were dispatched to a neighborhood after residents reported that a local squatter named Desiree went on a rampage and threatened a family. When the officers met her, she was initially calm. However, it quickly became clear that something wasn't right. >> What's going on? >> I can't see. >> I I'm just like blind. >> Okay. >> And death, you know, that's all. >> Okay. >> And I have tattoos on my face. >> Sure. >> Says that say I can't I have to. >> Sure, that's fine. My family's in the military and they're police and I can't talk to them. So, I have a love tattoo. >> Okay. >> I was just trying to get my underwear on. So I get a I got hurt before like beaten not by you but so I can't hear and I get really worked up. I can't see and other people go around blaming me and I can't talk. I'm just trying to catch my breath. I can't see anything. >> Yep. It was clear right from the get-go that Desiree was delusional. She could obviously see and hear as she was clearly looking at the officer and listening to what she was saying. She said that she didn't live on the street, but claimed she was visiting a friend who was living in the neighborhood. >> What are you out doing today? >> Are you headed anywhere? >> Um, so the neighbors called us. They said that you were threatening them. >> No. What happened there? >> This is why like my son's a cop, too. Like, >> okay, so first of all, I'll show you cuz I have these tattoos, right? All of them >> they say like I am the police like right here. All it stars can't shine without darkness and I have a love tattoo because my son died the locals love thing. >> Sure. >> See >> I'm listening to >> you're not listening. That's why I get all the time. This person knows me. That's why >> I don't think I've ever met you. >> You do too cuz my whole family's cops and that's why you can't wear the ears cuz you're in the wrong ear. Desire's demeanor was playful and laid-back at first, but as the conversation progressed, her mood began to change. It wasn't clear if she was on drugs or off her medication, but either way, she wasn't stable. >> My family is cops. Okay, what? Okay, so this is why. Okay, don't I've had enough stuff and this person will protect me because I go I have a bunch of drugs and not drugs, but I mean I'm a person that has religion and a cop tattoo and I go I'm not supposed to get handled by women one cuz they go they beat me and I go rip out little ear things and then my kids >> That's right. We can't talking. >> Will you come with me? I don't I get handled by men and there's one who's been >> You need help? Do you want to go somewhere? What do you want us to do? I need the cop that drives around undercover. She's a Hispanic. >> While the male officer kept her company, the female officer spoke to a neighbor who described what it was like living next door to Desiree. >> She's like really mentally ill. >> What was she saying? >> She Well, I took my dog out and she was coming ac my my yard. I asked her to go away to get off my yard. She wouldn't. She kept coming towards me. Kept threatening the dog, threatening me. I am not putting up this. I know that she's crazy. Certifiably crazy. I I'm so tired of the in that house. I can't tell you. We have kids. We have people. >> No, I get that. >> It was a tough situation. It's easy to feel sorry for Desiree, but there were children in the neighborhood who deserved protection. To back up her story, the neighbor showed the officer video footage of Desiree threatening her children and pets and damaging her property. >> You dropped it. >> I don't. That's not mine. >> Go to prison. What the are you gonna do? They're not going to do anything but I am the cop. It works for me. >> Straight out of you. >> What are you looking at? Ugly. You >> get off my property. >> Get off my property. Get off my property right now. Get off my property. I will call the cops. Get off my property. >> Get off my property now. >> Or what? >> I will call the police. The neighbor informed the officer that Desiree had been with two other men earlier in the day who were all squatting in the house down the street. Also, due to Desire's threatening and aggressive behavior, she wanted to press charges against her. And with that, the officer turned around to deliver the news to Desiree. >> Okay, Desiree. So, I talked to one of the residents down there >> and I watched a video. Did you ever watch a video of like did you see um did you see that guy who killed me and I go >> I didn't see that but so the video I'm talking about today we're just talking about what happened about too like >> so you threaten to beat her >> no I didn't I don't she told me >> so here here's the thing >> here's the thing >> I'm issuing you a notice of court for charges >> why cuz let me see this what are you going to do about Got it. >> Okay. Do you want to go to jail then? >> Uh, am I going to go to jail? Says you're alive because I go I protect jail. I go live in a church. >> Okay. I'm giving you the court date. >> Says call my dad. His name is >> Call your own dad. We've already asked about that. >> Yeah. Call him. >> So, you need to leave now. >> You need to leave now. >> And you need to go to your court date. If you don't warrant for your arrest. >> Desiree wanted nothing to do with the notice to appear in court. The officers were actually giving her an easy way out. She could just take her belongings and leave the neighborhood and that would be it. But to no one's surprise, she chose to make the situation worse for herself. >> You need to leave or you're going to go to jail. >> Oh, am I? That's my That's my like dad. And you beat me. >> You're not allowed to live here. This house is for sale by the city. It's owned by the city. You're not allowed to stay here. >> Okay. You need to go. >> You need to go. So where? So go to like >> Okay, you come back. You're going to jail. So >> I am not going to go to jail. >> Don't come back. says, >> "She has nothing to do with it. Walk the other way." >> She You don't either. >> Says, "Why?" I have, look at this. Hold this. >> No. >> I says, "I have the whole cops on here in jail. Prison." I go, "You're going to go for touching me." >> Desire, you need to leave. >> My name is Desiree. >> Okay. All right. >> I go, "You know what?" >> For a moment, it seemed as though Desiree was going to listen to the officers and just walk away. However, she barely made it 20 steps before turning around to berate the officers all over again. >> What are you going to do? >> Okay, you're about 5 seconds from going to jail. >> I just took it like, did you watch a film? >> Yeah, that's right. So, it's like >> all my >> She pulls on her pants. She's going to jail. >> Leave me alone. >> All right. That's why >> don't touch me. >> Come here. >> Don't touch me. Don't touch me. Don't touch me. Which is why call the cops. What? Cuz you're dead. Why? Cuz I can go. I go. No. No. No. >> Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. >> Call him. Call Henry Crowder now. >> Not calling anyone. >> Yes. I know you. I call it. So the the government like my son can't call it local. I can't breathe. Does it stop calls? >> I know that's why >> we're >> stop cuz I you're like my one friend. Desiree was charged with disorderly conduct, criminal trespassing, resisting arrest, and aggravated menacing. Squatterers move in uninvited, exploit legal loopholes, and act like they own the place. But ownership isn't about who holds the keys. It's about who has the law on their side.
