Emergency emergency 2213 emergency shots fired by [screaming] He did that, bro. He did that to himself. Holy [ __ ] My god. Oh my god. [laughter] Police work can take a toll on even the toughest officers. Having to make split-second decisions in life-threatening situations puts a person on edge. And that's a dangerous place to be while holding a loaded gun. Today, we take a look at the rare moments when good cops broke down in tears on the job. Get out slowly. Get out of the car. Keep your hands out. Drop the gun. 58. SHOTS FIRED. SHOTS FIRED. What do you do when you see a drunken man causing chaos and waving a gun in the street? Well, you call the police. On May 30th, 2022, multiple 911 calls reported a similar incident taking place at 1551 Meadowark Lane in Mary'sville, Ohio. When deputies arrived on the scene, things quickly took a turn for the worse. I'm out here. The destination is on your right, 1551 Metallark Lane. Put your hands up. Put your hands up. Put your hands up. Put your hands up. Put your hands up now. 58. I got one at gunpoint. Okay, just put your hands out of the car. Okay. Okay. We'll figure it out, but we have a report of a gun. Okay. Okay. You need to chill out and stand over there now. The deputy swiftly took control of the situation, aware that there might still be a gun involved despite what the woman said. Reports indicated a man, later identified as 33-year-old Matthew Todd Hunter, had been pointing a gun at people, saying he was going to die. Okay, step out of the car for me, bud. Okay, step out of the car for me now. Get out slowly. Get out of the car. Keep your hands out. Drop the gun. 58. SHOTS FIRED. SHOTS FIRED. DON'T MOVE. DON'T MOVE. DON'T MOVE. BACK AWAY. BACK AWAY FROM HIM. BACK AWAY. Don't touch it. Don't touch it. It was a BABY GUY. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT? Told you. I back away from him so we can get him help. Back away from him so we can get him help. Stay with me. again. Stay with me. IT'S NOT A GUN. IT'S NOT a gun. Are you I TOLD YOU HE PULLED IT. I TOLD YOU IT WASN'T A GUN. Back up away from him. BACK UP AWAY FROM HIM. I WORK AT A HOSPITAL. I told [screaming] him [crying] I throw it out of the You got any other woman? No. Just like that, in a matter of seconds, the situation escalated into something no one wanted. The woman told the officers it was a BB gun. Therefore, she felt there was no reason to shoot Mr. Todd Hunter. On the other hand, Deputy Jacob Mateo couldn't be sure if the gun was real or not. So, he decided to fire his own weapon to protect himself and others. No, just that you didn't have a gun. We don't WHAT DO YOU CALL THAT? Get back. I need guns to get back. Get back. GET BACK. YOU HAD A GUN. HE GUN. YOU NEED TO GET BACK. HE DON'T HAVE A GUN. We need to get HIM HELP. I TOLD YOU WE DIDN'T HAVE A SHOT. STAY RIGHT THERE. Get back. Let us help him. Let us try him. Stay back. I need to call his brother. Stay back. Call his mother. He is dead. YOU GUYS SHINING RIGHT IN THE HEART. Oh my god. The she come right on our property. She's the one that started this [ __ ] As other officers worked to secure the scene and give aid to the suspect, Deputy Mateo stepped back, struggling to process what had just happened. The sight of Mr. Todd Hunter and the cries of his family members started to affect the young deputy. You all right? Hey, you all right? You okay? Yeah. Get her in a car somewhere. Jim, get on the chest. Hey, here. Right here. Do me a favor. Just watch. Make sure no one gets there. First aid. Medics are coming. Okay. Can you just stay over there so we can the address? Fred wants to know the address. No. 1551. 1551. Metal arc. Can you guys stand on the sidewalk, please? For a brief moment, Matteo regained his composure and carried on with his duties. He even knelt down with the other officers who were attending to the suspect. However, seeing the unresponsive body of Mr. Todd Hunter lying on the pavement made him realize that the suspect probably wasn't going to make it. Suddenly, it all became too much for him to bear. dude. Come on. Did he do that for? Come on. Here. Hop in the car. Hop in the car. Go. See, you're good. Hop in. Turn around. Turn around. Turn around. Good. Wait a second. [snorts] Dude, what the hop in? Did you discharge? Yeah. When you're a police officer, shooting at suspects and potentially taking someone's life comes with the job. However, this time the suspect was not a criminal, but most likely just an innocent person who had a mental health crisis and decided to do a stupid thing. That had to be a difficult pill for Deputy Mateo to swallow. God damn it, dude. Yeah, I'll get it. 20. [snorts] Go ahead. You know what I mean? [snorts] You're all right, brother. Dude, what the [ __ ] man? You did what you had to. [snorts] What the did you do that for? Take some deep breaths, brother. Just breathe for me, man. Breathe. Keep breathing. Who are you? That's my sister. back up. [ __ ] dude. God damn it. At one point, one of the officers came by and told Deputy Mateo that the suspect was still breathing. That might have helped the deputy cope, at least for the time being. After about 15 minutes of sitting there in silence, he was asked to surrender his weapon, which is standard procedure in these types of situations. 300. Hold out for a second. Wretch is here. He'll take care of your car. You just go come with me. You grab my phone. Yeah, I'm grab my phone. My Can I come up with you, sir? We'll go back here. Stay here. What direction did you fire towards the car? Can I turn this off? Yeah, if you want. As per the sheriff's office policy, Jacob Mateo was placed on administrative leave. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducted a thorough investigation and a grand jury later determined that the fatal shooting was justified. 58 shots. On October 23rd, 2024 in Charlotte County, Florida, a disturbance was reported in the 2200 block of Sandy Pine Drive in Puna Gorda. The owner of the property, 42-year-old Elroy Clark, reported one of his tenants erratic behavior. However, that decision was about to fire back at him. I thought I could help him, but I can't. He's unstable. He's disturbing the peace. What happened today? Peace must be maintained, right? Uh, you feel the peace? You feel it? What happened today, sir? It needs to be maintained. It's pretty peaceful right now. He came into my my home and I told him he can't come in without permission. Yeah. So, he violated my space, my boundaries. Okay. Then came and slammed my door. So he destroyed Yes. That's destruction of property. Where is he currently? He's currently in my area that I allowed him to stay in. How long has he been staying here? For a few months now. Okay. Is that him right there? Yes. And he he needs to be evaluated or looked at or whatever you got to do. Okay. Do you have any weapons on He has no weapons on He has no weapons. You have any weapons on you? I am the weapon. Okay. Do you have any guns on you? I don't I don't use guns. Just stay right here for me, please. The officers asked Mr. Clark to stay back while they investigated the matter. But pretty soon, they received information that the landlord gave them a false name and that he had a warrant out for his arrest. Even worse, he declared himself a sovereign citizen, which most likely meant he would attempt to challenge the officer's authority. All right, we're about to go 1015 on him. We're going to have a problem. He's a sovereign citizen and uh pretty big dude, so we can just kind of make your way uh this way, please. Hey, come here. Come here. Elroy, that's not my name. It is. No, it's not. It is. You got a warrant for your Do you know you got a warrant for your arrest? Listen, calm down. No one's calming down. Don't listen to that man. Take off your glasses. What is your name? It's okay. What's your name? Take off. I sold you. It's Ben Day. It's not Ben Day. I got your picture pulled up, man. That is not Elroy. That is not me. How are you going to tell me who I am? Cuz I I got proof. I got your picture. That's proof. I have your I have your ID. That's [ __ ] You got bull in your hands in in your I your car. Calm down. You're on my land. You're telling me to calm down? You've got a warrant for your arrest. I've been here peacefully making things happen in my [music] world, in my space. I'm allowed to do that. Sovereign citizens usually operate in their own world, convinced that laws don't apply to them. But sooner or later, reality catches up. Almost invariably, they end up face to face with the justice system. And on rare occasions such as this, tragic things happen as a result. Put your hands behind your back. Listen, it's a civil matter. 402, give me trouble. I am calm and it's not about to be. It's not about to be. I want to stay calm. I want to stay calm. If you fail to comply If you fail to comply to what I just said, I want to stay calm. If you fail to comply with what I just said, put your hands behind your back. Listen, I don't I don't take from you. Listen. You're about to touch me. You're about to get tased. For what? You have a warrant for your arrest. I do not have a warrant. Put your hands behind your back. I am Ben. Okay. Who's the warrant for? For you. For who? For you. Who's who? Who's you? Listen. Who's you? Put your hands behind your back. I am Ben. Do you hear what I said? Do you have an ID? I am Ben. I'm on my property. I'm not I'm not I'm not cooperating commerce. Do you have an ID? Commerce? I don't know what that is. You're about to get tased. I'm not. Yeah. Tase me on my land. I will. I will. Sovereign citizens believe that laws should only apply to those engaged in commercial activity. That's why Mr. Clark kept declaring himself a private citizen, falsely believing that the officers had no jurisdiction over him and his private matters. They were in a standoff. And the question was, how far would they be willing to go? Put your hands behind your back. Go ask Elroy. Put your hands behind your back. Go ask Elro. I'm going to tell you one more time. Put your hands behind your back. I am not matching anything. This is my estate. Right. But to keep this peacefully, I am being peaceful. I have no weapons on me. And I told you that. I'm allowed to raise my voice. Let's not against the law. That's what decel is it that I need to go past. What decel is it not peaceful anymore? Tell me that. Put your hands. Do not touch me. Put your hands. Do not touch me. Put your hands behind you. Do not touch me. I'm telling you, do not touch me. I'm going to tase You tase me, it's going to get hot in this and it's it's I'm telling you it's going to get hot. All right. I'm telling you it's going to get hot. I don't care. Go ahead. I'm going to tase you. All right. Let me put your hands behind your back. Listen. Put your hands behind your back. Go ahead and do what you got to do. Go ahead. Don't touch me, though. I'm not You're not allowed to touch me. Back up. Maintain one arm distance from me. Using a different name is another sovereign citizen tactic aimed at making it difficult for officers to trace them. This time, however, the officers were sure they had their guy. The only problem was their guy was big and threatening. What happens if their tasers fail? Taser. Taser. Taser. Taser. Tase them. Get on the ground. Just get on the ground, please. OC. OC. Get on the ground. I gave you everything and this is how you treat me. On the ground, please. I gave you everything. I gave you everything. Get the off me. Don't touch me. Stay on the ground. Do not touch me. If you touch me, if you touch me, you're going to see something you don't want to see. Alroy, come on. Get on the ground. Come on. FOR YOUR SAFETY. GET ON THE GROUND. I'M TELLING [screaming] YOU. LET'S MAKE THIS PEACEFUL. If this is peace and love, THIS IS PEACE AND LOVE. COME ON, ELROY. THIS IS PEACE AND LOVE. Peace and love. Just get on the ground. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your background. Don't touch me, Elroy. No matter what the officers did, they just couldn't get Elroy to comply. The colossal man stood his ground, and neither tasers nor pepper spray could make him submit. Even worse, he seemed to be getting more aggressive by the minute, and the officers were slowly but surely running out of options. I'm not getting my hands behind my back. THIS IS MY LAND. AND do not me with that again. Just listen. Go ahead and hit me with THAT AND LET IT BEND AND THEN you'll see. Back up. Hit me with that. Back up. It's right here. That's okay. Hit me right here. Hit me. I'm giving you permission. Back up. I'm giving you permission to show you so you can see. WHERE IS IT? WHY ARE YOU LISTENING to this man? He's trying to help you. Why are you listening to this man? He's trying to help you. It's a civil matter and I told you to. And now we're trying to figure something out. Hey, do not go on my grass. Get off my grass. Get off my grass. Tell him to get off my grass. He's been tased twice and sprayed. Tell him to get off my grass. I've been tased. Get on the ground. [groaning] [screaming] Get on the ground. Hand behind your back. Hand behind your back. GET A DAMN [ __ ] TAS MOTHER. All right. When the third officer got involved, they managed to incapacitate the suspect long enough to get him to the ground. But the job was far from over because the moment he regained control of his muscle function, Elroy showed them just how strong he could be. I GET OFF. Get on the ground. Get on the ground. Stay down. Stay down. You're going to get shot, mother. I'm telling you. You're [ __ ] shot. It's not going to work. Get on the ground. It's not going to work. You're incompetent. Get on the ground. Not leaving him. Not right now. Get on the ground. No one's going to get No one's going to get We don't want TO HURT YOU. GET ON THE GROUND. GET on the ground. Get on the ground. The man shouting from across the yard was the suspect's brother. Instead of telling his brother to calm down and go peacefully, he yelled at the officer not to shoot him. and that only added fuel to the fire on both sides. Not wanting to shoot the suspect, one of the officers goes for a less lethal weapon. 402 sentence update. We're still attempting to take into custody. Trying to avoid lethal at this point. 402. We going less lethal. This is a bean bag. This is a bean bag. You don't want this. Trust me. All right. You know what? Listen. Get on the ground. You don't want this. You'll get water later. You You'll get water later. You can get on the ground now. Palmer, move. Get on the ground. You're going to be bean bagged if you don't get on the ground. Get on the ground. After numerous warnings, the suspect still posed a threat. Since it was not safe to approach him again, the officer had no other choice but to employ less lethal rounds. Will that be enough to stop this man? Get on the ground. I'M TELLING YOU RIGHT NOW. GET ON THE GROUND. I don't know if I can take it. Less lethal. Less lethal. Less lethal. Get on the ground. Get on the ground. Get on the ground. I know. Get on the ground, dude. The next Get on the ground. Good day. Get on the ground. Shots fired. Shots fired. Shots fired. In the end, a simple altercation led to a tragic, senseless ending. The suspect passed away. A family got torn apart. And one unlucky police officer was forced to do what no cop ever wants to. Let's watch those horrific moments from his point of view. Get on the ground. I know. I know. Get on the ground, dude. The next thing. Get on the ground. Shots fired. [panting] on your back. [panting] Shots fired. 428. Shots fired. Over now. Hey. Breathe. Deep breath. Deep breath. In. In. Out. In. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Look [laughter] me. Look at me. Look me. Look at me. No. Come on. Face this way. Face this way. Deep breath. Deep. No. Me. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I know. I know. Deep breaths. I want to hear deep breaths. The officer who shot the suspect said he was okay. But deep down, he knew that nothing was ever going to be the same. It was obvious that taking someone's life didn't come easy to him regardless of the circumstances. Luckily, his partners were there to support him through the shocking experience. Like that. One more. One more. Come on. No. You're cleaning up. Come on. You good? Man, I could have shot him. Come on. Come on. Come on. He was coming right in. I got you. I got you. I got you. You're good. Come here. Come here. [laughter] I didn't want to do that. I didn't want to do that. No choice. Okay. Come on. Oh, come on. You're fine, Alex. I got you. Come on, little boy. I got You're fine. You're fine. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm I'm breathing. I'm breathing. [snorts] What makes this situation even more tragic is that Clark was described by his friends as a family man with several kids. And even worse, the warrant was for a simple trespassing charge. Hardly something to lose your life over. Two officers used lethal force that day. While the altercation with Mr. Clark started off pretty amicably, our next case was the exact opposite. On August 11th, 2023, two Chicago police officers spotted a confrontation between two individuals near 1100 West 111th Street. They noticed one of the men had a gun in his back pocket and pursued him into a residence. Hey, put your hands up. Put your hands up. Put your hands up. Put your hands up. Officers need help. Put your hands up. Hey, get the gun here. You know what's an emergency? What the Why didn't he go off? Let it go. LET IT GO. LET IT GO. LET IT GO. LET IT GO. LET THE GUN GO. DON'T LET THE DAMN GUN GO. PUT IT HAND. LET it go. Let it go. Stop. No. The suspect later identified as 36-year-old Lewis C. Gordon Haye refused to let go of his firearm. He was adamant about not wanting to go back to jail, but was he willing to lose his life over it. Let's see. Stop. I'm going to shoot. No, don't shoot. Don't shoot. Don't shoot. Shots fired. 21. Shots fired. Emergency. Emergency. [ __ ] 2213. Emergency. Shots fired. Police five police squads. Send EMS. You okay? You say we're getting shot. GET OUT. GET OUT. GET OUT. GET OUT. GET OUT. GET OUT. FIRED BY the police. 213 is at 11. 11. Hey, hurry up. Squad. You okay? All right. Do we have a police officer shot? Don't know. Squad. I'm trying to see my partner. Partner. All right. Sergeant 223 is on the way. We got as well. Is he okay? You okay? By the time this officer managed to get a first aid kit out of the car, his partner had already exited into the yard. That could mean only one thing. The suspect was incapacitated and most likely deceased. It's okay, man. It's It's okay. It's okay. He fired. Did you FIRE HIM? I SHOULD NOT LET GO THE GUN. It's okay. If you're going, just roll. First shooting on the scene with 13 advis. The moment this officer let go of Mr. Gordon Haye's weapon, the suspect managed to fire. At that point, the officer on top of him shot as well, protecting himself and his colleague. The young officer quickly realized that if he hadn't let go of the suspect's weapon, this might not have happened. He did that, man. Y'all didn't have no trust, man. He did that. [screaming] He did that, bro. He did that to himself. [sighs] [snorts] [panting] Don't let this be okay. Relax a little bit. Get your breath. You're good. You're good. You're good. Most officers probably go through something like this at one point in their career. Some of them crack, others don't. But all of them know they'll have to live with the consequences of their actions their entire lives. Amidst the chaos around him, this officer was trying to work through it. Partner, come here. You okay? Yes. Did he didn't shoot you? No. Everything's Everything's being recorded. He didn't shoot you though, right? No. Shake. Check. Check to make sure cuz that that round went off. That wasn't you or him? It was him. He said it. That's what I'm saying. That didn't you You're okay, right? Yes, I'm cool. 111. We're at average. The young officer tried his best to keep his cool, but all the officers present quickly realized that he was in severe emotional distress. Several of them called him to the side and tried their best to help him calm down. You're good, man. All right. Look at me. Look at me. You're good. Hey, good. Deep breath. Do we have a uh occasionalist? Put you in the car. I'm cool. I know. I need to put you in a car though. Come on. I'm just going to take a walk. You're going to go to the hospital, right? Yeah. No, no, no. You should go. Yeah, you should go to the hospital. Your your your chest is tight, right? fall. The irregular breathing patterns, shortness of breath, wobbly legs, all signs of shock, no matter how much the officer tried to keep his composure and convince everyone he was okay. His colleagues eventually talked him into going to the hospital for a checkup. Where's uh your partner? He inside the house. Come on, man. You're coming with me. I'm going to take you to the hospital. I'm fine. You should You should I'll go later. All right. Go later. You should go so that you can rest. No one can talk to you. You know what I mean? Let's go. Let's go. Come on. I'm going to take it. I don't want to go. But you're not going to go to the hospital, but you're going to go. Let's just sit in the car. He's going to go with Captain. You take him. Take him to the hospital. Yeah. His chest. He It's hard for him to breathe. He said, and he's complaining about his back. Make sure you get your back checked out. Okay. Okay. All right. Who wants to take his muffin? Which cut? Uh, let me No. Chase is in the building. Okay. All right. Take your phone. Take it. Take it. You got your phone? Uh, I didn't. My phone was in my in the car the whole time. Okay. All right. Okay. All right. Yeah. All right. Hey, Ryan. We got over there. So, who? Okay. All right. All right. You're Are you not Let me ask you these questions. Are you injured? No. Okay. You just want to be checked out. After reviewing the body cam footage, police and civilian reports, as well as medical records, the office of the state's attorney concluded that Mr. Gordon Haye used a firearm to fatally shoot himself. Police officer Dennis Hubertson [music] then discharged his firearm, shooting Mr. Haye as well. In the end, both officers were cleared of any wrongdoing. Just 18 days before the K-9 shooting incident in Florida, an officer from Washington DC had a tense situation as well. A civilian had informed the young officer that there was a man using narcotics in the rear of the 1900 block on 16th Street. When he got to the location, he quickly found 40-year-old Ros Hail Manellic Salam getting ready to shoot up. Oh, how you doing, sir? I'm just shooting. I'm just I'm just shooting this. You want to move? Okay, I'm moving right now. Thank Hello. Hi. I'm just adding this. I understand. Just get your stuff. Okay. Hey, I'm gone. I understand. We can't do it here though. We got to do it somewhere else. Okay. Salam was lucky that he bumped into a considerate officer. The officer warned him about doing drugs near schools and it looked like that was the end of it. But the situation was quickly about to change. Yep. Go up the alley. Don't do it near Skill's house is where they call the police. I just local entry and discussion properties. The redactions make it hard to piece everything together, but here's what we know. As Salam turned and walked into the 1700 block of Minnesota Avenue, the officer noticed a firearm protruding from his clothing. It might have been reasonable that he decided to turn a blind eye to the drugs, but seeing that gun changed everything. Anyone in the area of 17th Street and T Street Southeast in sector 2. Could be there in maybe a few minutes. I got an individual walking down the street, 1800 block at 17th Street now. red pants, black uh wife beater, something in the back of his uh sticking out of the back of his pants. I just stopped him for uh shooting [music] up on someone's front step and as he got up walking away, it looks like he might have a gun hanging off the back of his uh his pants. Can I have another unit? I'm going to go ahead and go over the main air now. As well, where are you at? P please. I am. I just don't want to stop him until I've got another unit. The young officer was aware that confronting the suspect alone would be a mistake. Aware of the potential risks of engaging an armed drug addict, he decided to call for additional units. Traffic three on approaching now. Hey for ma'am. I was flagged down for an individual who was shooting up in someone's front yard. And as I uh sent them on their way, as he walked away, it looks like he might have a gun in the back of his pants or something sticking out. I see another unit. Minnesota S Minnesota where S is in Sam traffic red pants black wife white wife beater black hat walking down Minnesota now 1700 [ __ ] I'm just waiting for another unit to stop him. There's a flag right here. Yeah. Even though the officer appeared to be calm and collected, luckily backup units arrived within minutes. And then it was time for a showdown. Units continued on. So he's right here to my right. I'm going to shoot the stop now. Stop. Stop. He's Stop. Traffic three. Shots fired. Traffic three. Shots fired. Traffic three. I have shot my duty weapon. I've shot my duty weapon. I need officers. It was later determined that Salam shot first. So, this young officer had a valid reason to fire back. But the moment he saw Salam lying on the ground, the gravity of the situation hit him like a ton of bricks. His sergeant noticed it and immediately reacted. [ __ ] Were you hit? No. Were you hit? No. Hold on. Okay, you're good. You're good. Come here. Holy [ __ ] Come here. My god. Oh my god. Bro, sit down, brother. [snorts] Oh my god. Give me your gun. Give me your gun. Give me your gun. I'm going to check real quick. Okay. I have a gun for your breath. Following procedure, the officer removed his vest to be checked for injuries. Often times, the adrenaline hits so hard that people don't even notice they were shot. The officer had no injuries, but Salam was in critical need of medical attention. A crowd quickly started to gather at the scene, which created a potentially dangerous situation. What? Nobody else didn't. Take a deep breath. Let's make sure we get the board started here. We're going to need the entire roadway. My car's in the middle of the road here. Give me one. Just give me Okay. on the scene. For myself. I have the officer. I got him. Let's focus one. Shut down this entire block. Here. Once the area was secured, DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene. Salam was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He was then arrested and charged with assault on a police officer while armed. When officers have to draw their guns, it becomes a dangerous situation, not only for the suspect, but also for themselves and their colleagues. On January 8th, 2019, officers Lane Butler, Kurt Sinks, and Aaron Wright attempted to serve a suspect an arrest warrant. You want to grab your keys and we'll do that. So, that side door right there. She says he's not in there 100%. Hadn't seen him in month. She told me at the HQ that this chick's been calling in tips that he's here and she's and and she's let us in. And I just wanted somebody to come with me so I can officially document, hey, they're feuding today. I'm here now. All of a sudden, we're getting calls. He's here. If you if you don't mind when you unlock the door, if you don't if you just want to you can you're welcome to go in if you want to and check make sure your dog's locked up. But if your dog if you know your dog's locked up, it's scary, but she I promise good. As long as she ain't going to get out, then we're good. Thank you. And absolutely nobody can be inside. Nobody else has a key? No. Okay, perfect. Well, she has a key, but Well, I'm saying I want to make sure you're not going to get surprised. No, nobody's Cool. The key element in this situation is the dog. The woman assured the officers that the dog was secure, but that is a very small cage for a very big Kane Corso. And before this incident is over, that dog will play a vital role in what is about to unfold. Can I just look in there and make sure that my dog just She's not. If you would make sure that we're showing apartment number two, same numeric, but number apartment number two. Copy. We're being given uh consent to go inside and look be inside. You just want to step right over there, hun. We'll be right back. Lafayette Police Department. Anybody inside? Come out now. Make yourself known. Go to the right. Check this kitchen. I'm going to hold left. We're clear in here. Throughout their investigation, the Kane Corso kept barking from the entryway. The officers were already cautious because a potential suspect could be hiding inside and a loud barking must have added to the tension. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, watch that. You ought to hold there. Officer McDonald noticed the suspect reaching for the glove compartment and cautioned her partner about it. As the officer approached with a flashlight to get a better look, Darien informed him what he had in his hand. Why are you doing all this? Got a whole lot of pistol on me, sir. Dude, I got a whole load of pistol on me, sir. Bro, it is loaded. It's loaded. trying to go on my grandma loaded man. He need a crime pass, sir. She going to leave me. I got I got send me the grad before anything. Okay. How about this? Take me to Grady so I can stack my check up. How about that? I'm going to grad. No, you're not going to get All right. Darien finally got out of the car and ran away. The officer's main concern was whether he had taken the gun as well. However, they were just buying time because a crisis intervention team was on the way. This was a residential area and the last thing they needed was a shootout. Yo, don't come this way. Go out of the way. Put the gun down. Put it down. Okay. DON'T COME NO CLOSER. DO NOT COME CLOSER. The officers deliberated if one of them should go around and set up a perimeter. They ultimately decided to stay where they were and just keep a close eye on their suspect. For the time being, the best option was to avoid antagonizing him and keep him at a safe distance. PUT DOWN THE GUN, MAN. PUT THE GUN DOWN. PUT IT DOWN. [screaming] PUT THE GUN DOWN. Go around. Go around. Darien approached the officers but started leaving again. However, once they lost sight of him, they decided to move in and locate his whereabouts. He was obviously still a threat to anyone he'll encounter while fleeing. Thankfully, the cops eventually found him nearby. Yo, can y'all move, please? Move out the way. Move. HE NEED TO PUT IT DOWN NOW. Where's the gun, man? I got nothing. Put it down. Put it down. PUT YOUR HANDS OUT. Officer McDonald made good on her threats and really did shoot the suspect, but chances are she didn't mean to. It's likely that her finger slipped as she shouted orders at Darien. Other officers ran up to him and started administering first aid. As for Officer McDonald, she was slowly realizing what she had done. We good. Uh, can you stop me? Grady, please. Radio. Okay. Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. [laughter] Okay, you fine, Ariel. Good. I'm just For a moment, it seemed like Officer McDonald was fine. She even approached the suspect to check in on him at one point. However, her emotions were too much for her to handle, and she kept breaking out in tears from time to time. Despite Darien receiving medical care moments after being shot, he was later pronounced deceased. Hey, stay with me. Relax. Relax. Stay with me. Stay with me. Okay, you hear me? You hear me? Can you see? Can you see it? Press or something. [clears throat] It's okay. Just go over there. Go over there. Okay. Relax. No, I think it's going to fly.
