All right, there we go. Keep breathing. Let's go. There we go. Get on the ground right now. Get on the ground. Come on. Come on. When police officers find themselves in grave danger, the bravery and quick thinking of their fellow officers often makes the difference between life and death. Officers help their partners through thick and thin, ranging from gunfights to accidental overdoses. And there's no bigger relief than when good cops save their partners at the last moment. On August 6th, 2021, police in Orange County received a 911 call from a woman who was concerned that she was being followed by another driver. 911 emergency. Hi, I'm currently getting followed and I'm going to drive to the police station. Okay. How far away are you? I'm like 3 minutes away. I'm on Mojave Boulevard near Wingtock. Okay. What kind of car is following you? It's a Toyota. An older Toyota. All black. Do you have a license plate number? I can't see it. They're like tailgating me. Hey. Was there some type of road rage incident or what happened? I don't know. Like I They've been following me since the freeway. I don't know if I cut them off. I don't know. I just Oh, okay. Yeah, they've been following me since the freeway. Okay. And every turn I do, they follow me. Okay. Have they done anything to you or said anything to you? No. And it's an older model black Toyota. Is it a truck or sedan? It's a sedan. And it's a female driver. It's a male. Anybody else in there with him? No. All right. Have you approached the Hog Boulevard yet? Will you hit Cypress before the or before you quit? I'm sorry. I'm on Cypress right now. Okay. And he's still behind you. Yeah. I've been making turns and he's been following me. Every time I switch the lane, he follows me. Okay, that's fine. But he hasn't said anything or tried to hit your car or anything like that. Correct. No, he's just been tailgating. Tailgating and following someone is a criminal offense in California, especially when the person being followed is being made to feel unsafe. Since the woman didn't know the suspect, his motives were unclear. With the suspect just 3 minutes away from the station, the safest option was for the police to wait for her arrival. What kind of car are you in? I'm in the Volkswagen. A blue one. That's a Yeah. Uh, I've never been to the police station. Do I just go to the front on Uklid? Yeah, just pull right in front of the station. So, on New Glad, you'll make a right and then just pull over where you see the doors. Hopefully, he'll just continue on. Okay. Are you there? Are you here already? Yeah, I'm outside. Okay. Behind me. Okay. Did he pull over? Yeah, ma'am. Okay. What is he doing? He's reversing. Okay. IC and parking. Reversing and parking. I have my headlights on. Okay, hold on one second. Can anyone come outside? Like, I'm really scared. I'm I'm calling someone right now. I'll just keep you on the line. Okay. Instead of driving off, the suspect parked directly behind the woman. And then he tried to enter the police station. However, the lobby was closed. A police officer who was already outside approached the suspect. Hi. Hi. How's it going? Good. What's going on here? I'm just seeing somebody right now. Okay. Are you with these cars? Uh, no. Okay. All right. Yeah. We'll go get you in a sec. Okay. All right. Hey. Hey. No. Where you hit? Where are you hit? On the chest. Okay, you're okay. Take a deep breath. Take a deep breath. 10:33. Suspect is down. I've got an officer down. We need help. Okay, you're one of the golden rules of police work is to deescalate the situation, even in incredibly tense situations like these. So, while the officer was probably within her right to shoot the suspect, she still offered the suspect a peaceful way out. The backup officers also rushed to attend to the wounded officer. Drop the gun now. Suspect, drop the gun, suspect, drop the gun or I'll shoot you again. Drop the gun or I will shoot you again. Drop the gun. Suspect, drop the gun. The gun's facing into the PD. Anybody standing in the inside? Hey, he's right here. He's got a gun in his hand. You're good. You're good. You're good. You're good. Where you shot at? Where you shot at? Where you shot at? Where you shot at? Where's he shot at? Hey, where you shot at? She's okay. She's okay. She's caller. Get him out of here. Where's he shot at? Where's he shot? In the chest. In the chest. The suspect fired two bullets, one of which managed to pierce through the officer's bulletproof vest. Getting shot in the chest is life-threatening, and the eventual outcome depends on several factors, such as the speed of the bullet, entry point, type of bullet, and the organs affected. Ultimately, time was of the essence. You're good. You're good. You're good. Hey, he's still got the gun. I can't relax. Relax. Relax. Relax. Hey, get him. Let's get him out. Get him out. Help me track him out. Hey, get him out. The officer thankfully survived the incident. The suspect, later identified as 22-year-old Matthew Tua Entran, did not survive the shooting. The Orange County District Attorney's Office ruled that the officer's use of deadly force was legally justified. An autopsy discovered that Trann had amphetamine, marijuana, and methamphetamine in his system. On January 30th, 2022, officers were dispatched to a home where a woman called 911 over a dispute with her adult son, Deonte Quarrel's Jr. He also did not allow her to leave her bedroom. David, David, the front and the back door lock. We're unable to uh get into the residence. She's still alive. That's correct. We're trying to get one of them to come out. Every time she tries to go to the door, he's pushing her on the bed and it's only her and him in the house. Any animals? Am I four David to 543. We go to bridge then 43 radio. We have the mother on the line, correct? We don't have any direct contact with the son. The call taker attempted to speak to him as well, but he's not cooperating. But yes, we have direct contact with the mom. The mother was also concerned that someone had laced Deonte's vape, which he believed was causing his erratic behavior. He had been taken to the doctor earlier that day, but by the time police arrived, she was still waiting for his test results. The night before she had called police due to similar erratic behavior, but officers left without taking action. What you say? Three. Just wait until we get another door. County police. County police. What are you calling? When your radio, are you calling? No. When the house goes through. County police. County police. Make yourself known. County police, make yourself known. Where you at? Is he armed? The night before, Deonte refused to go to the hospital and threatened violence if forced. Because the mother was trapped inside, officers prepared to forcefully enter the bedroom armed with tasers and guns in case Deonte became aggressive. Let me see your hands. Get on the ground now. Get on the ground right now. Don't move. You're going to get saved. Get on the ground right now. Get out of the ground. Come on. Come on. I'm getting a key up. Are you okay? There's more units. 13 13. Unfortunately, the taser had no effect, which can happen when the tased individual is in mental distress or under the influence of drugs. During the entire ordeal, Deontay managed to punch two separate officers in the head. Stop. Godamn. Get my finger off. Shoot him. Shoot. Shoot that mother. Shoot him. God. No. God damn. Put your gun down. Put your gun down. Just put it down. Hey, put it down. I can't breathe. Take a breath. Hey, take a deep breath. Deep breath. Hey, get on the radio for Hey, hey, hey. Stop. Stop. Start fire. Start fire. Help me out. Come to me. Come to me. Come to me. We here. We shot at, man. Come on. [Music] What's hurt, Richie? I'm trying to bite my finger on my face. I can't feel my face. Can't feel your face. I do that. The wounded officer suffered from a severe head injury but survived. CPR was also provided on the suspect, but he did not survive the incident. On August 10th, 2023, police in Florida received a 911 call about a reckless driver who had crashed into several vehicles. Eventually, the driver stopped and inside the vehicle was a visibly intoxicated 61-year-old who refused to take sobriety tests. While searching the car, an officer discovered narcotics and accidentally inhaled one of the dangerous substances. I got really lightheaded. You did? Yeah. Call ENS. Have a seat. Have a seat. 313 rescue. Another officer responded promptly and remained calm to prevent panic. The officer had accidentally inhaled an opioid a 100 times stronger than morphine. And one of the drugs most dangerous effects is slowed or repressed breathing, which meant that the officer could potentially within minutes. All the way down. All the way down. Talk to me. What are you feeling? I feel really dizzy. I just like being really fast. That's fine. You talking? I'm good. I hear you. How you feeling? I'm good. [Music] Need some water, man? Yes. Yep. You don't mind just going to drink out? Mhm. Was that under an undershirt, too? The officer was given a dose of Narcan, which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. However, depending on the potency of the opioids, a single dose may not be enough. So, the officer's fate remained uncertain. How you doing? Okay. Sit up. Sit up if you can't. Hot. Cold. What's up? I feel I feel really dizzy for you. Sweating like a [ __ ] Stay in that way. We'll hit you with another one here in a minute. Okay. 1033 units. L3. Uh, we got an ambulance on the way. Do you got fresh water that's cold? Can you give me that? Who else going with you? How old is he? 17. He's living with you. Got some cold water coming. All right. And when it hits you, I don't want you to chug the whole thing. All right. The most frightening part was that the officer had been wearing protective equipment. Yet, it still wasn't enough. Thankfully, police officers have been trained on exactly what to do in this situation. And thankfully, a good Samaritan also stepped in to provide the officer with a bottle of water. Can you open one real quick? What else? Stay away from me. All right. Looks right up the road. Right. Still you still lightheaded? Yeah. Do you touch anything other than fatal? No, I touched the suspected marijuana. I want to put I put piece of white rock. Okay. Just breathe. Breathe. Take both of my my left hand. You ready? Breathe in. Breathe in. Along with administering the medication, it was crucial to keep the officer awake and breathing. Eventually, the effects of the illegal substance began to wear off, but he still required a medical assessment. More keys. All right. Thank you. Where's your brother live? Miami. Yeah. Both of them. My little brother wasn't home. My hands are really shaky. It's all right. He was testing drugs until he walked overhead and basically passed out. Hey, partner. I was tested that I was I tested a white substance. I put it in the test kit. I got my head. Okay. Not used. Not used. Okay. Get on your hands. No, I was wearing gloves. Yeah. Okay. How you feeling right now? I can't feel my legs. My hands are shaking. Can't feel that here. You feel that? You can feel very shaky. Okay. Probably any more. [Music] The officer was then taken by fire rescue to a nearby ER and later released. On April 12th, 2024, officers were dispatched to a mall where a person was found sleeping inside and refusing to leave. What's going on? Hey, they do not want you. This is private property. I wasn't told. So, I wasn't told. Also, there's people here and I was going to get a haircut. So, okay. Uh, so I don't know what after that. I'm not trying to get in trouble. I mean, do nothing. I mean, I'm just trying to get a haircut and stuff, get out of the rain and stuff. Do you have like appointments? Nobody told me. Nobody told me anything. No. No. You're not in trouble right now. They just asked us to All right. Cuz the cops are here. I mean, what the You got IDs? Uh, no. It's like that's another thing cuz honestly I've been uh No. Like right now is like No, it's been my wallet's stolen. So, I'm trying to like get all my stuff together and like get get a new wallet and stuff. Are you from here? Kind of. Yeah. What does that mean? What do you mean kind of? Yeah. Uh, well, I'm in between. How is what's your name? Eric. What? I mean, what? What? Did I do anything wrong? Well, he reported that he told you to leave and you didn't leave. Honestly, I don't know. I didn't told me to leave. Okay, that's fine. I'm just trying to find a place to like honestly I was going to get a haircut and stuff. Just trying to play find a place to like gather my stuff in between housing. Well, lucky for you, the the rain is kind of died up. Hang. Hey, what's your what's your middle initial? We just got to know who we're doing, man. I've never talked to you before. The suspect's sudden decision to leave suggested he might be hiding something, so officers questioned him further. Before letting him leave, the police wanted to check if there were any warrants out on him. You said your wa was stolen. Did you have like a driver's license or state ID through Illinois? Where's the last place you were staying? I know you said you're in between. Uh here like Poria. Yeah, I was at a nursing home here. Before that, I was in Rockford. Do you have medical condition or Yeah. What's that? Uh like schizophrenia or PTSD. Okay. Do you take medications? Yeah. Do you have any? Yeah. Are you out? I have some. Okay. Do you have a doctor here that you see or? Uh my do What do you mean? A psychiatrist? I mean, how do you who prescribes you? What? Why do you need to know this though? Am I even under arrest right now? You're detained. So, do I have a right to remain silent? Yeah. All right. Thank you. You don't have any warrants or anything, do you? Right to remain silent. Am I good to go? Once once we hear back that nobody's looking for you. Why would anybody be looking for him? We talk to people all the time that somebody's looking for him. Maybe have a warrant or something like that. Maybe miss the court date or something. You ever been in trouble with the police? 1099 on Rockford. Is there anything else? Yeah, I'm just just waiting on confirmation for something. Yeah, Rockford's looking for you. What? Rockford? Yeah. Okay. All right. So, I'm under arrest. Mhm. Okay. The suspect had been indicted on two charges. On March 30th, he was charged with punching a City Link bus driver. And on March 8th, he reportedly punched a member of staff at a nursing home where he was resident. However, the police only knew he had a warrant and were unaware of his violent nature. Hey, come on. Put Put Am I under arrest or no? Yes, you are. You have a warrant for what? You have a warrant. I have the right to know what I'm under arrest for. A warrant for what? You don't know yet, right? No. Yeah. Hey, Don't move. Don't move. Don't move. Both officers worked incredibly hard to disarm the suspect. In addition to his warrants, the suspect now faced the very serious charge of battery on a police officer. Body cam footage later showed how badly injured the officer was. That's correct. Stay with him. Two. We're over by the kickback. Stop moving. We'll get it. You were you pointed your taser this way and I wanted to make sure I didn't I I did went over here to pull mine out cuz I didn't know if you were shooting I don't want to hit you. Yeah. No, I was I didn't want you to hit me. Yeah. Yeah. I was getting it out and we're down here. You all right, Lee? Yeah. He just hit me in the face. The uninjured officer understandably felt upset that his colleague was harmed. In fact, she felt guilty that she didn't do enough to save him. Thankfully, another officer was present to set the record straight and inform her that the exact opposite was true. No, you saved you saved Lee from getting a lot. You did a good job. Well, no, but he punched him and then was coming for me. But you stopped But you stopped it is what I'm saying. You stopped it from getting any further than it already did. Are you upset with yourself? Yeah. Don't be upset at yourself. Well, I did your job. I never got hit. That's just part of it. Someone was going to get hit. It's either you or Lee. Lee got hit. He took it. He's fine. He's fine. He just has a cut. It's all right. We'll be okay. You stopped it though getting worse. You stopped it from escalating. You did a good job. Don't be hard. Alongside his warrant, the suspect was charged with criminal trespass, resisting or obstructing, and aggravated battery to a peace officer. On October 24th, 2023, a sheriff deputy in California named Marvin Morales suffered a drug overdose in the police station where he worked and was discovered lying on the bathroom floor by one of his colleagues. Unfortunately, some of the audio and the body cam footage was redacted. The officer suspected it might be an overdose and quickly ran to his car to retrieve some medication. Inside his vehicle was some Narcan, which he quickly retrieved while calling for backup. Wake up, bro. Yes. where my car is at. Uh, first Nor can't apply. He's coming too. Leave that door open. Morales, you good? My radio is dead. Huh? My radio. Get his vest off. Straighten his leg. Straighten his leg. The officer had brazenly consumed narcotics while on the job and more importantly had risked his own life. It was later revealed that Morales had struggled with addiction long before joining the police force. Footage from his and a colleagueu's body cam showed him confiscating drugs from a homeless person earlier that day. Hello. Headed over. You know how it goes, man. All right. I see your pockets. Okay. Okay. I'm good. No, you ain't good, bro. You want that, bro? You You almost passed out last week. No, I didn't. Yeah, you did, dude. You You bought to Nar, can you? No, that wasn't me, sir. That that female deputy from last week. I didn't go to I didn't go there. You want me You want me to do my job? General An investigation revealed that Morales believed the confiscated drugs were but they were actually with fentinyl being an incredibly potent drug. Only a small amount can lead to an overdose. Thankfully backup arrived to assist the officer who first discovered him. Wake up bud. Come on. Hey, I got a second one if you need it. over and over. I hit him one already on his on his left nostril. Give another one. And that's when he came too. That's when he came too with pulse. Still got breathing. Breathing. That's his car. That's my car. I I came to use the restroom. I thought he was in there taking a poop and as soon as I open the door, he's leaning against the corner. So, I ran back and got my North Camp. I'm going move my car out of the way at least. To consume these drugs, Deputy Morales used a pipe, which he had also confiscated from a homeless camp while on duty. A report from Deputy Morales mentioned that it was broken. So, he falsely reported that it had been safely disposed of. Come on. All right. There we go. Let's go. There we go. It's coming to a little more. Yeah. Seems like it's starting to kick in better. Come on, come on. Come on. Is it rapid at all or does it feel like it's normal? No, it's it's it's rapid. Okay. What's up, guys? He's been down for about five six minutes now. Four minutes hand radial. Got some light respiration. Out of consciousness the whole time. Drug use. No, we found a a meth. Further investigation found that this was not a one-off, but a pattern. Morales regularly confiscated drugs from homeless people and then used it for his own consumption. And this incredibly dangerous drug habit had finally backfired. At the hospital, his fellow officers were still unaware of this and assumed that he got accidentally exposed to the drug. You found something? Yeah. Yeah. So, the glove that the what a caused this that exposure? Mhm. It has a It was a foil that they pulled off of like on the call and I think it just You can feel the foil in there. I don't want to open it up. Get us all exposed. Yeah. You know what I mean? [Applause] It's crazy quick. So I'm always worried about see like so many times I search people with no gloves not even thinking you know and it's like all lucky like that one cop in uh SoCal Mhm. he was exposed to it. They were just getting rid of some drugs that they found. The investigation concluded that Deputy Morales had been dishonest and recommended that he be fired from the police force. Morales instead voluntarily resigned from his role. Hopefully, he's on the road to recovery from his addiction. All of the cases we've seen today serve as a reminder of the dangers police officers put themselves through every day. However, they can find some comfort in knowing that whatever danger they may face, their fellow officers will always have their back.
