out of that shot. 1078. >> Can you get out of the Can you back out? Thank you. Can you get back, sir? Just in case. >> Cops spend their days protecting everyone else, often without thinking twice about their own safety. Yeah. >> No, it's like a antenna or something. >> You sure that's not Harry? >> Harry Potter's thing. >> It's a red pickup. >> But there are times when they end up being the ones who need saving. >> Cool, guys. All right, that's good. Stop. Hold on. >> Hold down. I'm going to need a tourniquet on my leg if you got one. >> Okay, watch behind me. I don't have one. I don't have one. Watch. Watch behind me. >> Fortunately, help can come even from those without badges. And it's a powerful reminder of humanity when cops get rescued by unexpected people. >> Get your face on the ground. >> Hey, man. This man trying to hurt me. I don't. >> On November 27th, 2022, Louisiana State Police were called to a crash site after a pickup truck came off the road and rolled over onto its side. There were reports of the driver fleeing the scene and a gun being fired. Radio got fired. Shots fired out here in the woods. [Applause] Get your face on the ground. >> Hey man, >> kind of hurt me. >> I'm going to hurt you. Put your hand behind your back. >> I'm trying. I will. I damn, man. As >> far as I'm concerned, I just saved your life. Promise [ __ ] Can't take my life, man. >> With the suspect secured on the ground, the lead officer took the opportunity to have a quick look inside the black case laying beside him. It contained a digital scale with residue, ax pill, and a bag of what was suspected to be honor. The red item on the ground was a loaded syringe. >> Hold on. Right. >> Just lift the drug. That's probably why. >> No. No. Because you did it. >> Can I turn you on your stomach? >> Come on. Get up. >> Hold on, man. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. >> What's your name? I know you. >> Hold on, man. My shoulder's killing me. >> What's your name? >> Oh, my shoulder's coming. Ah, >> we can get out to the fire truck. Check out the other arm, man. >> Thank you, man. >> You told me your right shoulder. I'm grabbing your >> my left shoulder. That's the one I meant. >> Okay. >> While the suspect was led away, one of the officers went back to the scene of the crash. He radioed his colleagues with the registration number for them to run through their system. But what they discovered would come as a surprise. >> That 28 on vehicle one is going to be Zulu 266251 Z 266 251. Red pickup 47 on the left. >> It's a red pickup. They have 47 region three. What is that? 28 return to >> like a white 94 Chevy pickup. >> Meanwhile, the suspect continued groaning in pain and complaining about his shoulder all the way to the officer's vehicles. Medics were already waiting when they got there and proceeded to check him despite his persistent protests. >> I think I dislocated. >> You can tell me you're right. [ __ ] I know. I know. Good [ __ ] [Music] >> Okay, buddy. I'll fix your shirt. Okay. [Applause] >> I can't take your shirt off without manipulating your left arm. Okay. >> Hey, let me explain something to you. >> You don't have a choice about wanting anything right now. You understand me? >> I know that. I know that >> the suspect was identified as 42-year-old Lewis Greenberg Jr. Medics prepared to sit him on a stretcher while officers searched his pockets and found another clue as to why he might have fled the scene of the crash. I'm sure. >> Hey, where yall going to go? Anybody know? >> Probably going to be. >> As it turned out, the bags in the smaller box contained and there was also a Suboxone pill in there. The lead officer then questioned the two citizens who'd caught the suspect in the woods and they gave him their side of the story. >> All right, sir. What happened? >> Jacob, my son lives in this house. >> Yes, sir. >> This is my property. >> He flipped his truck right there. My wife seen it. I come down here to get first aid. I'm trained first responder. >> Got down there and helped him out with his gas and all that in the truck. >> Mhm. and he got out, jumped this fence, told him to sit down. He hit his head. He blew jumped the fence and head toward my house. My daughter's in it right now. >> Mhm. >> My right there. >> So I can come around the back side of the property over this right here. >> I come around the back side of the pond right here and hit it back up to my house. When he come right through here, that's when Daddy Yeah, I was down at the shop right here at the intersection. Mhm. I was out there on track and Jacob pulled up said you got he said there's a crack up to my house. So me and my grandson he jumped in that side and I saw him coming up through the woods took up there and I went to holler and stop. He kept running and I fired a shot in there. He wheeled around and said I ain't armed. I said, "I am stop." And I got to and told him to lay down. That's when little altercation. >> The lead officer asked the two brave men to fill in witness statements, so he had everything in writing. Again, they were happy to oblige. And the older man was sure to check the name of one of the other officers for his statement. It turned out they knew each other, proving it really is a small world. Trooper V O C K E R >> just like mechanics up there in downtown >> used to work at Ford. >> You be talking about the same man. >> He the one that worked at Ford play. >> Yes, sir. >> All right. You going to have to talk to him here in a second once he gets off the phone. >> Nice to meet >> Good job. Yes, sir. >> I don't want that song running up through my grandkids and on my plate. >> I don't blame you. I don't blame you. I put a fellow in the hospital. He's probably going to be a DWI on a drug and then uh unfortunately he'll probably stay in the hospital with his shoulder broken. >> Yeah. >> Well, he kept telling me don't touch my right arm and I grab left arm. >> Yeah. >> Probably survived that calves crushed all the way down. >> I didn't want to put my hands on his skin. I seen that blood. So, I just grabbed him by his shirt and br him down and get on his belly. I was trying to make him lay flat. >> I got Well, let me catch it so he don't fold out of the hospital. >> Medics had determined the suspect had a broken shoulder, so he was taken to the hospital for treatment. The lead officer talked to him about the accident and how he was most likely looking at a charge of DWI. Given his attempt to flee, it probably came as no surprise when he started making excuses. >> But you gave you gave your blood sample, so it's not a refusal. Okay. You'll be driving while I'm >> comments. You ask me what drugs I did. I was telling what drugs I do. What drugs I was on. I wasn't telling you I was loaded or I was on drugs. I was I thought y as what drugs have I done? Like what what drugs do I do? Like what what drugs do I use? Yesterday what we got tomorrow but that was way yesterday last 72 hours. Yeah, but >> you know that >> I had done been sleeping everything, man. I had just woke up. Like, man, they had just come woke me up. Like, I wasn't on anything, man. Like, I wasn't >> yesterday or last night or what time yesterday? You have any idea? >> Yeah. Middayish morning. It's midday morning. It's like like 12:00 afternoon. >> What? You said you dozed off when you were driving, right? >> I doed off. I mean, >> so why are you not driving >> from being up to long, you know what I'm saying? Just I just I just do I was tired. >> The suspect was adamant he'd not done any drugs, but as the officer pointed out to him, he couldn't really make that claim when he'd freely admitted to using and but as expected, he had more excuses up his sleeve. >> You can't say I didn't do any drugs yesterday. Nowhere's near close to that time where I got accident. Okay. You also said you smoke. It's been probably two days since I smoked a joint. >> Like I wasn't intoxicated, man. That's not why I wrecked. >> Here's what else. I've been honest with you as me, man. I don't understand about I wasn't intoxicated. >> I don't drink alcohol really at all. >> Yeah, you got to be under influence or something. I wasn't. >> The officer must have realized he wasn't going to get any admission from Lewis. So, he decided to move on to his next question. But even with that, Lewis still had excuses and they were even lamer. packing separately with scales. What you doing with it, man? I >> You trying to sell a little bit paper habit or what? >> No, man. I just shoot stuff, man. But I like >> Why you got a bag like this? >> Because I put so much away, man. Like I I pull out one bag that way. Nobody knows really what I have. And that way I can control what I do. >> The white pill in your black container. >> Where did it come back? Urinorphine hydrochloride is what it's called. It's a schedule three field. What do you take that for? >> It's the white field in the med box. >> Brown round white. It says 54 411 on it. You remember that? >> 5411. I think it's a sub. I don't take them mother. >> I hate them. So why you have it? >> I don't know. I didn't know I did have one. I hate them pills. >> I did have 21 days off them on camera. I supported myself. I would never take another disappointment strip as long as I live. The suspect was charged with a first offense DWI, careless operation, failure to report an accident, various possession of controlled dangerous substance charges, possession with the intent of a schedule 2 controlled dangerous substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under suspicion, and switched license plates. On February 15th, 2022, Columbus police received a report of a man trapped in a frozen pond after falling through the ice on its surface. Officers raced to find the pond to rescue the man. >> I see him. I just don't know how you access it. [ __ ] I don't know if I get over that fence or not. Oh, just open it. >> What? >> Down the side of the opening. >> How far down? >> Right down here. The officer on scene continued down the slope as fast as the wintry conditions allowed. When he reached the edge of the pond, he could see the man was quite a way out and difficult for him to save on his own. Fortunately, a good Samaritan was willing to help. Yeah, he's out there ways. >> I got one. I don't know if it's long enough. >> How far you go out there? >> Where the ice is? >> You take us out to him? Yeah. The clock was surely ticking for the man in the pond. They didn't have time to wait for backup, so the good Samaritan risked his own life going out onto the ice with one end of the rope while the officer held on to the other. But the treacherous footing meant they had their work cut out for them. Let's get him out of there. We got the rescue rope to him. >> Can you get up out of there, man? You got to get out of there quick. The officer fought his way back onto the slope, using the warning sign to steady himself. Once he was in a better spot to pull on the rope, they gave it another try to get the man out of the freezing water. >> Let's try again. >> Hey Steve, where are you in relation to Mercedes Lane? Hey, Sam. Right behind uh it's north of your location. Just go behind those buildings. >> The buildings are right next to you. >> Come on. Come on, guy. >> Come on. Come on. >> We got him out. Hang on to that rope some more. Get Grab a hold of that rope. Let's pull him up some more. >> One more. >> How the hell did he get all the way out there? >> His dog ran out there. >> A little more. >> There you go, bud. Anybody else in there? I got >> Holy [ __ ] >> I got him. >> My hands are so cold. >> Appreciate you, man. >> Once the man was out of the water, the good Samaritan returned to the safety of solid ground. He'd witnessed the accident and explained to the cop how the man's dog had run out onto the ice and fallen in. The man then raced to rescue his furry companion without a thought for his own safety and also fell in. >> If there's any cruisers coming off, he's falling down. >> Watch out. Watch out. Don't slide all the way. >> Anybody not see him on that 20? >> Yeah. >> This little dog ran out there >> and he got it out the water. Slipped in. Two war. Two for a war. Man, you're amazing person. You saw me sliding out here. >> I bit it a few times. I parked right there, ran through the fence. >> Yeah. >> I had no way how to get you guys back here >> cuz I kept saying where where's this damn pond at? >> He kept saying right there where the main come this way. What is there that way? >> Mercedes. >> I'll say Mercedes. >> You want you want to help drag him up here? >> No, it was to continue south in the complex. We're going to see him on the north side of the building where our cruisers are. Oh man, >> I need the medic to come all the way. >> I saved my dog. Did I get it? >> Is my dog still out there? >> His concern for his dog was truly heartwarming. And the lead officer assured him that it was also being cared for. Medics checked him over, but it was clear he wasn't out of the woods yet, and he had to be pulled the rest of the way off the icy terrain. >> We're close enough. >> Okay. >> Yeah, my legs, they just >> Okay. Nobody else in >> No. >> Oh man. Man, my hands are whole body. >> Yo, numb. >> Yeah. All right, that's good. >> Hold on. >> Where the other guy went, but it wouldn't have been for him. >> I don't know where the other guy went that was helping me, but it wouldn't have been for him. We wouldn't I wouldn't have been able to do it myself. I guess the dog, someone else got the dog. >> Someone else has got the dog. >> Despite the man's numbness, his condition was stable. Medics transported him to hospital where he would receive the attention he needed until he could be reunited with his beloved pet. On May 25th, 2025, officers were dispatched to a shoplifting incident at a Kohl's in Florida. There were two suspects, male and female, who had reportedly been in the store for 6 hours before attempting to leave without paying. They had to get away in the parking lot waiting to pick them up. But when officers arrived, the male tried to run. >> Go get the other one. I got another one running. Stop right there on the ground. Get on the ground. >> I didn't do nothing. On the ground, I didn't do nothing. >> On the ground, I didn't do nothing. >> On the ground. >> I didn't do nothing. >> Stay out of the ground right now. Right here. >> We didn't do have contact. >> I wasn't in this. You know that, right? >> I'm sorry. >> You're just saying right here. Right here. >> No, don't talk to each other. >> Did you hear what I said? Don't Did you hear what I said? Sit down and don't talk. >> Re put her just pet her down really fast. Actually, you get up. I'll put you down and put her in the back of my patrol car. Okay. >> Can I sound this burning? >> Absolutely. >> Listen to me. Nobody is talking right now on the curb. >> Be quiet. >> Yes, ma'am. >> While the female officer dealt with the suspects in the parking lot, a male officer went after the fleeing shoplifter. It was an intense chase, and the suspect might have gotten away if it hadn't been for the help of a civilian. But it was the shoplifter's first statement to the officer that was the most surprising. Stop, >> dude. Put it down. >> Thank you, man. >> Roll over on your stomach. >> Roll on your stomach. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> I'm trans. >> Give me the other hand. Give me the other hand. >> I'm trans. I'm biologically supposed to do eat that, dude. Do eat that. >> 228. I got one contained. It's going to be in front of BJ's behind the wood line. Thank >> you, please. >> Yeah, just look like you're doing a pretty good job for you. >> With the suspect handcuffed, the officer needed him to sit upright so he could check his pockets. So far, he seemed cooperative, but there were more surprising statements to come. >> Roll over on your back. >> I got a little I help you. I help you. >> Sit up now. Sit up. >> Sit up. >> I got a lower back problem. >> Sit up. All right. Get a breather. All right. >> That suck. >> I'm homeless. >> Where are you staying at now? >> I'm homeless. >> Just around here? >> In the woods? Yes, sir. >> Okay. Over there by Toledo and Collinswood, >> you know. >> Bro, this is my backyard. Okay. Let's put it at the back of my hand. >> Yeah, sir. >> All right. Listen. Take a deep breath. All right, we're going to walk over to my car. Have you can sit down, get you s Get you some water if you want. All right. >> Not necessarily. No, >> you got to figure out what's going on. All right. >> Meanwhile, officers in the parking lot tried to get to the bottom of what was going on with the other suspects. With the fleeing suspect already in custody, the civilian went to the parking lot and showed the evidence he'd collected on his phone. >> Sir, man, sit on the curb. >> I'm cool. >> Yeah. Yeah, man. You're good. Oh, I >> do. I swear. >> Don't be taking pictures of me in my car. >> Hey, hey, hey, don't touch me. >> Don't touch me. 100%. >> It's a public space. I'm allowed to take your picture. >> That would be battery, ma'am. >> Don't take my baby, though. >> This is what's going to happen. You end up in trouble. DCF's going to take that baby. Is that what you want? We're trying to accommodate you. He's allowed to do that. You're in the middle of a couple of felony investigations and could be an accomplice. >> Do you understand? So don't get an attitude with us or you'll end up with us in the back of a car, too. >> Is that what you want? >> I don't think we're being kids. >> So we're not beinges. You're sitting there next to your baby. You're going to treat us with us with respect, too. >> You understand? [Applause] >> Slides. He walked out wearing different shorts. He selected the police short, put out. >> That was last week. I never found one until >> Once the trans male suspect had been escorted to the officer's squad car, he was asked about his friends in the parking lot. It probably came as no surprise that his answers grew non-committal. But after hours of surveillance, the lead officer felt certain they were working together. >> Hello. >> Hey, friend. How are you? >> I'm all right. >> You got buddies? You got buddies out in the parking lot, too, huh? >> Buddies. >> Yeah. Acquaintances. Business friends, right? >> Those are still pretty strong words. >> No, I wouldn't say so. >> Oh, I know. >> Say so, >> dude. We were gone for like 10 minutes. >> I Yeah, we've been I've been waiting for this for 6 hours. >> I know, dude. >> Huh? >> Freaking >> They have a scout. I knew it. 110%. >> Yeah. >> 110%. She said they didn't have a scout. There's four of them. I heard >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> You good if I if I read them? >> All righty. I'm going to read you a card. Okay. >> We're in Charlotte County. >> We are. So, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. >> Officers then questioned the other suspects in the alleged getaway vehicle. They maintained they were innocent and had been unaware of the shoplifting when they came to the store to pick up the female. But what was most surprising was what they said about her fleeing companion. >> All right, guys. We're just sifting through all of this and >> trying to get everybody as clear as soon as possible. >> I'm fine. just having such a problem with >> we didn't know >> what she was doing until she was running. >> She was just like she's >> we just came to pick her up. >> We didn't even know she Well, we didn't even know. >> Okay. >> We got called. Hey, good. >> Who was in the store with her? I some guy was >> I thought it was one of the >> you the lead officer was still convinced that the suspects were all working together and continued to question the trans male shoplifter who claimed that the people in the car were innocent and were just there to give him and his female companion a ride. >> Um, you got some friends obviously, right? I knew you had some friends 110%. And uh as soon as we go to leave, right, your friends say, "Hey, bro, we're good. We're good. We're good. We're good." >> And then uh here you are. >> So uh the headphone in your ear, right? >> Yeah. >> Is that your buddy in the parking lot telling you what's up? >> I swear to God. I swear to God, it is not as like It is not as like >> So you know we were outside. >> I didn't. >> Oh, you didn't? >> Literally did not. >> Why' you take 6 hours to leave? >> Uh we literally have been just waiting for a ride. They honestly have nothing to do with what we were doing. >> I was waiting for them to come to pick us up. They really did not know what was coming out to them. Is not as well orchestrated and thought out as you think it is. It's not. >> When asked if his female companion was his wife. He said it was complicated, but admitted she was at least a friend if nothing else. He then admitted the people in the car were friends he'd met through her. He also admitted to having drugs in his backpack. Don't forget he has a stolen shirt on under this black one. Okay. >> And this is two stolen shirts. Um so >> I still got to search all his property. >> Yeah. >> Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Um um in my backpack there is a black zip bag. >> Yeah. >> Um that has American. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Thank you for letting me know. >> Hey, besides the rig, dude. You got me or >> um I don't know. How do you want me to identify you if you Sorry, I don't mean to interrupt you. >> It's okay. Um I'm trans male. So, I'm going from female to male. >> Okay. So, dude, is that good? >> Yeah, it's easy. >> Okay. All right. >> Um, we got Is there actually like here besides the syringes or what? >> No. >> Okay. Cuz we're going to take the whole thing. >> I know. Oh, I know. I know. I know. It's like >> in on or around you. It'll be a third degree felony moving around. >> No. Okay. >> I don't want no smoke with that. Uh-uh. >> It was time to search his backpack. An officer began laying out its contents on the hood of the squad car while the transmale shoplifter watched from the back seat. But despite the suspect's willingness to admit the drugs, it seemed there was something else he hadn't wanted them to find. >> Oh, dingo. No, dude. Bro, come on. >> The female shoplifter was brought over to the same police cruiser as her companion and was seated beside him in the back. They seemed to have an interesting dynamic, but most entertaining was the trans male suspect's concern over the item he didn't want the cops to find, and it left a lot of room for imagination. >> I hope the best for you, right? This is obviously not the play. And you've obviously been arrested before if you're saying certain types of things. Okay. >> Got to put the seat belt in on, you know. Okay. This one's behind you. >> Can I ask the favor? >> What's that? >> Can you shut up? >> Never mind. >> So, she's the mastermind. She >> Nah, bro. >> No, >> no, she already knew what I was going >> to say. >> I was going to talk about the the the thing on the hood of the car. I was like, >> you know, >> that's mine. I don't know. >> No, no, no, no. The thing the embarrassing thing. >> What thing? There's a lot of things on the hood of the car. >> No, it >> the red shoe she put on or off. >> Not the red of the sho. Not the red sho. >> What thing are we talking about? >> If you don't know, I'm just >> I have no idea. There's a lot of things on the hood of the car. I know, but it was probably a thing that you would probably giggle a little bit when you saw it. >> Ken, >> I'm just >> like a balloon animal. >> No, >> I got it. Like, >> I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You'll probably see it. Y'all be laughing about it later. >> I'm serious. You'll be laughing about it later. >> The female suspect was charged with grand theft for an amount of $1,928 resisting and possession of anti-shoplifting control countermeasure. The trans male was charged with petite theft for an amount of $600, resisting and possession of a controlled substance. Some citizen arrests have to be seen to be believed. It was October 17th, 2023 when Scrapyard employees spotted a suspected thief in one of their cars. Thanks to some quick thinking from their manager, they were able to use their forklift to detain him midair. So, it wasn't hard for the cops to catch him when they arrived. >> Um, looks like they have him trapped on the floor. >> Can you get out of the Can you back out? Thank you. Can you get back, sir? Just in case. >> It doesn't say on the floor. >> It just says the patient is tackling on the floor. >> All right, man. Get out. Turn around. Don't put your hands behind your back. All right. Hands behind your back. >> You want to take this backpack off. All right. >> Relax your hands. Relax your hands. Relax your hand. Relax your hands. >> Now put them back together. >> With the suspect now in cuffs, the next step was to get his details. Officers asked him his name, but he was reluctant to answer. When he finally did, they had to get him to repeat it as it seemed made up. They then pressed him for his real name, and his mood was quick to turn. >> Yeah. >> What's your name? >> Mr. Funk. >> What's your first name? >> That's the guy from >> I'm not. >> What's your name, bro? >> My name is Mr. Funk, bro. >> Okay. What's your first name? >> Um I None of your business, bro. >> Well, it is. >> No, it isn't, bro. >> For what? I was running from someone, bro. >> You were? >> Yes, I was. Sir, >> so here's the thing. If that's the case, you're But you have You're compelled to provide your ID. And if you don't >> I don't have an ID, bro. >> You're compelled to tell us your name. >> My name is Mr. Funk, bro. >> That's a lie. And now you're under What's a lie? I don't What are you talking about? My name is Mr. Funk, bro. That's not a lie, sir. >> And don't call me a liar, bro. >> I'm I am relaxed, bro. >> So when when you're >> So when I'm What, bro? I'm literally running from someone, bro. You don't know me, bro. >> Let's walk back. >> No, I don't. Hiding from all this. I know where to go. You got to arrest me for that. >> I thought my name is Yeah, I know. I don't know what >> I don't have anything on me that's going to hurt you cuz I don't have a gun and a taser. One of the officers went to search the suspect's backpack and found tools for breaking into cars and stealing parts. An employee gave their side of the story while the officer conducted his search, explaining how this was the third time the suspect had trespassed on the scrapyard. >> That's the third time I caught that guy. >> Yeah, he uh he's he's got warrants for all this stuff. So, >> I caught him I caught him once and let him go. get the out of here and never come back later in the shop. >> Yeah, it's all his tools. >> I was putting the car in the shop and he was in the back seat and we called the police on you guys cuz you guys get here and he shoved one of my guys out of the way and took off one. >> Meanwhile, officers supervising the suspect tried to ask him for his real name again. They had reason to believe he was actually Austin Hottinger based on evidence they found in the car he'd been hiding in, but the suspect maintained he was not lying. >> What's your last name? >> Your Okay, man. That's >> Austin. >> All right, Austin, you're now under arrest for lying to our police. >> I ain't bro. My name's Alexander. >> You're a liar. >> I'm not a liar. >> You clearly have tattoos and >> I'm clearly Alexander Jackson Funk, sir. In a surprising twist, officers were able to run the name Alexander Jackson Funk through their database and confirm that was indeed the suspect's real name. But the suspect was still not off the hook because he still trespassed. >> All right. Well, you understand what you're doing here is highly illegal, right? >> Yeah. >> Look at that compared to now. >> I know. >> I mean, it's self-explanatory. >> That's definitely >> Not bad, bro. You look like a dude we were looking for. Look just like that's where that dude go. >> No worries, bro. >> I'm telling you. >> I just have a lot of people who wanted >> I did, man. >> I was sleeping. >> You're sleeping in the car. >> I was sleeping. Yes, sir. I was cold as running from someone and I was drying out. >> Yeah, I'm still running from >> I don't even know these people. I don't even know who they are. >> Why do you got a saws on? >> Um >> for work. >> For for work. work. >> Uh, I haven't been able to get a job for a while now, so I'm kind of working on my own. Sir, >> Mr. Funk's excuse for being in the car didn't seem to add up with the tools found in his backpack, but he denied having ever cut any converters. Given the wild story he'd been spinning about being chased, it's not surprising officers didn't believe him. >> What do you got the saws off for, brother? >> Uh, copper, to be honest, brother. Not going to lie. >> Were you trying to get some copper back here? >> No, I was not. I was not sir. >> What uh what were you doing back here? >> I was going down the freedom trail and I was running from someone and have been for a couple days now. It kind of invaded. >> Have you been Have they You've had encounters with the employees here before. They told you you can't be here. >> I've I've had one chase off before from here. Not going to lie. >> When was that? >> Last year. My last year. >> What happened? What happened during that? What did they catch you doing? >> I was sleeping. same thing. Nothing different. Like I literally haven't stole anything like that. >> The next step was to determine whether the scrapyard wanted to press charges. Mr. Funk was seated in the back of the squad car while officers confirmed there was a case for trespass and criminal mischief. When the moment came to arrest him, his behavior turned truly shocking. >> Hey brother, come on out. Come on. You switch these handcuffs out. Turn around and face the car, brother. Thank you, sir. Thank you. All right, go ahead. Turn. >> What am I doing? >> Uh, criminal trespass and criminal. >> Stop. >> Hey, we'll just get these. Uh, >> I'll see you after. Criminal trespassing and criminal damage. Criminal tools. Those aren't a tool. First off, they're my goddamn goddamn work equipment. My work equipment, bro. I don't need no helmet, bro. You don't even know my name, bro. You think I'm an officer, bro. Please don't bang my head. >> I ain't noer, dude. I'm aing goddamn father, sir. Stop mying wrist, bro. Bro, mying wrist, bro. >> And you guys are trying to get me for something I didn't do. You think I'm cutting off converters, keeping it 1400, sir? >> Dude, I don't want to go to jail, dude. >> I'm sitting here, sir. >> I don't want to go to jail. You said I'm not going. All right, I'll chill out. I just can't go to jail for nothing like this, dude. I'm seriously running from people you don't even know. >> Mr. Funk was taken to jail where he continued to cry about not wanting to be there. Next, he claimed to have depression and went on to beg the officer at the desk not to book him. When that didn't work, he reverted to the same aggressive behavior he'd exhibited in the scrapyard. >> Seriously, what the man? >> I don't know anymore, bro. They keep asking me. I don't know, bro. You looking at you piece of [ __ ] >> I just want to go home. I just want to get out of jail. [Music] >> Put me in the chair. It's okay. I'm get out of jail. >> Well, >> I'm trying to get out of jail and not be accused of other. >> Well, you're not going to get out of jail behaving like that. If you go with the program, >> the process to listen to you. >> I don't like >> Mr. Funk claimed he'd been in and out of prison all his life, and it's easy to see why. He was charged with two misdemeanors, one for criminal trespass and one for possessing criminal tools. [Music] Without the help of brave citizens, some stories could easily end in tragedy. That was exactly the case on January 8th, 2023 when Reno police officers responded to a call of suspicious activity in an apartment block. Officers arrived to find two male suspects, both armed. Two males. They're running away with several firearms. >> Please stop. >> Can I say I got shot? 1078. >> Both suspects went down in the shootout, but the officer was also bleeding and desperately in need of medical attention. A second officer arrived on the scene and rushed to help his partner. >> Sergeant, you okay? Coming to you. >> Don'ting move. >> I can't. >> Just Just hold down my leg if you got one. >> Okay. Watch behind me. I don't have one. I don't have one. Watch. Watch behind me. >> Watch behind me. Let me know. You got a gun? >> Okay. We're the We're Tell them we're by the um playground. By the playground. >> I'm being told by the playground. >> There was a very high risk that the wounded officer would bleed out if someone didn't do something soon. His partner called out to residents for a tourniquet. However, in pain, the sergeant's concern was still for the safety of the citizens and the risk of them entering the line of fire. >> Hey, anybody got a belt or a tourniquet? Bring it to me now. Give me a belt. Something we can make tight. >> You guys stay out from over there. Stay out. Go around the building. >> Yeah. >> Go around the building. >> Go this way. Go this way. >> Go this way. >> Thank you. Hey, come here. Come here. Come here. Come here. I need to wrap it around my partner's leg. >> Where? Where? Where? Show me where. >> Where, buddy? >> What do we need? >> Okay. Right. Right there. Okay. Above the knee. Above the knee, please. >> Thanks, sir. Hey. Hey, ma'am. Can you watch this way for me, please? The the bad one is upstairs to the right. >> While the second officer and the female resident covered the sergeant, a male resident attended to his wound. Three more armed citizens rushed to help keep watch as there was still the possibility that the suspects could fire more shots. >> Where's his tourniquet? >> He doesn't have one. >> He doesn't have one. >> Belt over there. >> Belt belt right here on the ground. Right here. right here. >> Yeah, I got him. >> Okay. >> Hey, can you can you watch with her? That way. Top top left. Top left. >> No. No. Top right. Top right. Top right. Farther away. >> We're at 335 for 43. I got three armed citizens helping me cover. Can you switch to green? >> Where exactly are you? >> He's right here. One's right here. >> Guard that way. >> Nora 335. We are code four with Sarge. >> I got cover on a two, but be aware there are three armed citizens with me. >> Thanks to the help of the citizens, the second officer was able to turn his attention to the suspects. He approached with caution, despite the fact the man had gone very still. One of them had been shooting what the officer thought was a rifle, but was later identified as an AR-15 style pistol with a drum magazine. >> The two down here, someone hasn't been moving. He just stopped moving. >> Move your hands where we can see him. Take that guy along. Take that guy long. >> Yeah, I got hands. I got hands. >> Roll to your stomach. >> Roll to your stomach. >> Roll to your stomach. >> Roll to your stomach. >> Come on, dude. What is >> your [Music] rifle? >> Okay, guys. Do me a favor. Hey, one down here. >> Roll him to the side. Keep it. >> Roll on your side. Roll on to your side. >> After one of the two armed suspects was cuffed and in custody, the second officer approached the other one who wasn't moving, but he was definitely armed with the rifle that was laying on the ground beside him. And there was still at least one other person in the apartment where the two men had come from. >> Okay, guys, do me a favor. Can you clear out of our line of fire, please? Move to the side. Move to the side, please. >> Okay. Ready? >> Hey, cover me. Okay, wrap them up. Is there anyone else out standing? >> Two so far. That we're good here. The that building the furthest stairwell top left is the bad one. >> Cover top of the stairwell left side number. That's where they came from. There's a female in there. I don't know who else. The wounded officer was taken to a local hospital where he was reported to be in critical but stable condition. The suspect who' not been moving was later pronounced deceased at the scene, but the other man was also taken to hospital and his condition was closely monitored. On June 22nd, 2023, officers responded to an incident of a man, later identified as Allen, driving his car into a lake. When the lead officer arrived, he was informed Allan had gotten into someone's boat and that something about him wasn't right. Two witnesses waited beside the suspect and seemed eager to help. >> What's going on, sir? >> What's going on? Talk to me. >> What's going on? Tell me what's going on. >> It's all right. Just tell them. Tell them what happened. I missed Megan. >> Huh? >> I missed my ex. >> Where's your ex? >> Was she in the car? >> Huh? >> Yeah. >> Huh? >> Was your ex in the car? >> Ex? >> You said you missed your ex. >> What's going on today? You told me nobody's in the car. That's true, right? That's your car. >> Yeah. >> As Allan reached into his pocket, one of the witnesses warned he had a gun in there, leaving the officer no choice but to restrain him for everyone's safety. Unfortunately, Allan had other ideas. >> Get your hands out of your pocket. >> Spread your feet. Spread your feet. And just stay like that. Okay. I'm not doing anything. I'm not >> You understand me? >> I'm helping the officer. >> Get my glasses. >> I got them. I got you. >> Cam, get your glasses. >> There you go, officer. >> Stop. Resist. Stop resisting. >> Or I will change. You understand that? >> He's trying to help you. >> I got you. I got your six. >> Yep. I got your six. Don't worry. I got your six. He ain't going anywhere. I get six. >> Watch your legs. Watch your legs. >> Fighting, dude. >> Stop fighting. Stop fighting. >> Trying to help you here. >> Here. I got his legs. I got him. >> Trying to mount him. >> I got his legs. >> We're helping here. >> I got your glasses, boss. Oh, those are my glasses. The lead officer took a breather while his colleague cuffed Allen's hands, aided by one of the witnesses continuing to help pin him to the ground. Allan was seriously outnumbered, but he still put up a fight, leading officers to rush for leg shackles to fully restrain him. He's kicking watch leg. >> Stop grabbing it. Stop grabbing it. Let it go. >> Taylor, relax for a second. >> Stop. >> I told you that. >> I don't need I'm fighting it. Just making it worse. >> All right. >> Appreciate your help, guys. While the lead officer thanked the two witnesses, his colleagues conducted a search. They could smell alcohol, and they weren't sure if the white item they'd seen in one of Allen's hands might be a knife. Another officer went to talk to witnesses, including the two who helped with the arrest. >> So, resisting what? Anything else? >> Bat Leo, do resisting with and battery on Leo. >> This is his. He was telling me this was God >> just in with that. >> He said that's God. >> He said that's God. I said, "What's going on?" He said, "God saved my life." >> He said, "That's God." >> So this gate was closed. >> I live over there >> and I heard him. I didn't know what it was now or then. I do now. But he crashed into the gate >> and then the vehicle went in nose first >> and I was like, "Holy crap." So I yelled to my girlfriend Jill. I said, "Come on, let's go." >> That's the lady. >> No, she's out on the boat. She's waiting for me. We uh lowered the boat real quick. Flew over. I jumped in. >> I opened the passenger door first. Couldn't feel anybody. Swam around the other side. Checked the driver side. Nobody. Kids walking up. I got up. I came and said, "Hey, who's in the truck? Anybody in there?" Cuz no way I'm going to the back seat. >> He said, "No, nobody else is in there." So took his word for it. >> Allan was taken into custody. And once his Jeep had been pulled from the lake, officers checked inside. It had grown dark by this point, so they were searching by flashlight. But when they turned their beams on the driver's seat, they made an unusual discovery. >> Yeah, that's fine. >> You need some light. [Music] >> You see here >> and then there What is the weapon? >> I don't know what that is. That right there. >> Yeah, it is. >> Look like a little like a little wand or something. >> Yeah. No, it's like a antenna or something. >> You sure that's not Harry? >> Harry Potter's thing. >> That's not a weapon, bro. >> And if it was, it'll work. >> It's not a weapon. >> Okay. >> Watch too much Harry Potter. >> Later that night, the lead officer did the paperwork for Allen's arrest, asking him routine questions as he worked his way through. It probably came as no surprise when Allen's answers were anything but normal given his strange behavior earlier that day. Do you have seizures? Do you know what that is? >> Like epilepsy or anything like that? Seizures? Uh uh. >> Are you taking any medication prescribed by a doctor right now? >> God. Okay. >> Do you have a physical handicap? >> God. Are you under the care of a dentist? >> Somebody cleaned your teeth? God. >> The time had come to conduct a sobriety test. Surprisingly, Allan seemed to experience a sudden return to reality. But it wouldn't be long before he slipped back into the same strange behavior he'd been showing earlier. >> Just a minute. You see the tip of this pin without fall without moving your head. Would you follow the top of this pin for me? >> You want me to do a sobriety test? >> Yes. Are you willing to take a sobriety test? >> Um, it's your choice. If you don't want to, you just say you don't want to. If you want to, we can do one. That's up to you. It's your choice. >> Okay. All right. You look at me real quick. Okay. I know you're you look like you're Are you praying or Okay. Is it okay if I continue to talk to you? >> Uh, yeah. >> Okay. All right. Now, you understand if you refuse to do the Sorbatty test, it can be used against you in court. You understand that? >> You're shaking your head. Yes. So, does that mean Yes. Oh, no. Then let's take the sobriety test. >> Okay. >> It's your choice. You don't have to. I just I have to notify you. If you don't want to take it, then I can stand up in court and say, "I offered you the sobriety test and you refused to take it." That's it. >> Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah. >> So, if you want to take it, then we'll go through the motions of it. >> Yeah. I'll just go through the motions. >> Okay. All right. With Allan agreeing to do the sobriety test, the officer explained a second time he needed to follow the pen with his eyes without moving his head. Allan acted like he'd understood the instruction, which made his performance during the tests even stranger. >> No, you can't move your head. Okay. Okay. Well, okay. We're going to do it several times. Is your eyes hurting? >> Um, no. But how long do you want to do it for? >> Well, I got to do six different sets. Okay. We just finished one. >> So, there's four five more. Okay. >> Okay. >> Drop it. >> No, I'm not dropping it. I'm follow I want you follow your eyes. Okay. Okay, >> just follow the pen with your eyes. >> Not me, the pen. All right. >> All right. >> Next, Allan was asked to tilt his head back and then say when he thought 30 seconds had gone by. It was a minute and a half before Allan said he was done. Then came the final test, which would also have been simple, but Allan acted like he was preparing for an event at the Olympics. Can you come up here a minute now? You okay? >> Yeah. >> Okay. I need you to come stand right here at the end of this line. Can you do that for me? >> Yeah. >> Okay. What I want you to do is put your left foot on the line and then put your right foot on the line like that and hands down by your side. I want you to just stand like that for me. Okay. You understand that? >> Yeah. >> All right. Go ahead. Put your left foot on the line. Go ahead and put your left foot on the line. Remember how I showed you? Left foot, then your right foot, and just stand like that with your arms down by your side. Can you do that for me? >> Yeah. >> Okay, go ahead. >> Okay. Allan was also breathalyzed, but it came back as 000. So, he was asked to provide a urine sample to check for any drugs in his system. He was later charged with battery against a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, criminal mischief, and driving under the influence. The final case for this lineup is an attempted bank robbery on January 17th, 2025. A man, later identified as John Martin, tried to get away with $2,000 in cash. Officers arrived to find John pinned to the floor by three bank clients who stopped him from escaping. >> Where's he at? >> He's right here as soon as he >> We got him. >> Okay. >> All right, madam. I'm also talking with APD. Right now, you're detained. You're not free to leave. If you try to fight or flee, force be used against you. Do you understand? All right. You want to stop for me? Right. Okay. >> Yeah, I'll do. Yeah, >> you're cool with me. >> Yeah, sure. [ __ ] guys. >> I'll be back in my wife cuz she's in trouble. Okay, I'll figure that out. Okay. All right. So, right now, I'm just going to play you down with any weapons. Any weapons on you? Are those going to show up pretty quickly? >> I don't think so. >> That's all I'm going to check right now is for weapons. Okay. We're going to figure out everything else. All right. Go ahead and stay there. Okay. Did you want to watch him and I'll talk to them or >> Yeah. You have >> On his way back inside, the officer was met by a sergeant who updated him on the situation and went to make a phone call for further guidance. The officer proceeded to talk to the teller who John had tried to rob and it quickly became clear this was not John's first visit to the bank. >> Were you involved at all? >> No, I'm in the back. >> Okay. You didn't see anything? >> I'm the one that called the bank. >> That's cool. It's going to be 273 which might be FBI. So, let me go make a phone call. >> Okay. >> Cuz FBI handles this. >> Really? Okay. So, then they >> So, if we just want to hold the scene, you want to ID everybody and do all that stuff and I'm going to make a phone. What happens? >> So, I made a deposit for uh >> a company, I guess, IHOP. And um he came in. I noticed him cuz he robbed us last time. >> Okay. >> And I was like, "It's going to >> You recognized him?" Yeah. Okay. >> So, he said, "Give me the money." And um I had on my top drawer. So, he just started grabbing it while I over the counter. >> Oh, so it was still over there. Okay. >> Okay. So, I was going to get your guys' information. All of Do you have your IDs on you by chance? >> Yeah. Meanwhile, Jon was searched again and remained cooperative as officers got him ready to go to jail. There was a surprise waiting in the hood of his sweater, and his bandana was a particular concern, which needed to be removed for his own safety. >> Go with the sweater. Do you have any other shirts underneath? >> Just a t-shirt. >> Just a t-shirt. Okay, let me just check your hood. Okay, I'm going to take this off. Oh, we got another needle cap in the hat here. Okay. >> All right. Yeah, it just fell on the floor. All right, turn around. Let me see the back of your hood here. You do have a bandana on, so I'm going to take that off. Okay. >> Can you turn just a little bit? I don't want to choke you up. >> You um I'm trying to see where the knot is. >> Just pull it over. >> Does it fit over your head? John had already complained of dry mouth on the walk to the squad car. So officers brought him a bottle of water once they had concluded their search. As he gratefully drank the entire bottle, he came out with a surprising statement which seemed to hint at remorse. >> More finish it off. >> All right, let me know when you're ready. >> You couldn't give me a cigarette. >> I don't know if we have any. We can check. Please, that would help me a lot. [Music] >> Oh, sorry. Stupid. >> Drugs don't. >> What? >> Drugs. >> They do suck. >> But I want to finish it off and I'll go check for a cigarette. Once Jon had finished drinking, another officer read him his Miranda rightites. He asked again for a cigarette, but his next request was a surprising one and again hinted at remorse for the poor choices he'd made. >> Do you understand your rights? Would you like to talk to me? >> Can I have this guy, please? >> Yeah. So, I have plenty of cigarettes. Um, I just need one more thing from you actually. Um, I need your first name, last name. >> John Martin. >> John. And then you said Martin. April 68. >> April 6th. >> Guys, can you give me a drug ID? This might look problem. >> Yeah. Well, I I'll look into that. Okay. >> The officer who'd been instructed to hold the scene continued to take witness statements and look at IDs. He was starting to get a clear picture of how the attempted robbery went down, including the role of the Good Samaritans in keeping Jon from escaping. >> Can I ask you what you saw happen? If you saw anything? >> I did. So, um, I watched him come into the the building. So, you saw him coming in? >> I saw him come in and he came in pretending he had a gun. He had his hand like this. And he went to the teller next to me. And there was a lady right there getting her transaction done, too. And he pushed her aside and leaned over the counter like that and started telling the guy to made it look like he had. It was just his hands. And so the guy, the boy teller was very responsive and was giving him the money. And I told the lady, I said, "He's getting robbed." I don't know if they realized it right away. >> And she looked, I was like, "Press the button. He's getting robbed." And then the lady's like the one who was getting her transaction done. I don't think she realized it. She went, "Can you please?" She went like that. And then he was like, "Give me that, too." And you kind of see him get like a little soup. And um and then the my teller is just like pressing the button over and over and the guy teller I don't know who he told but he told somebody and one of the guys sitting down. He goes, "Was it him or was it him?" He goes, "Yeah." And then they made an announcement that he robbed them and then >> I don't know for him and um they all kind of got him and helped out. The officer who was handling Jon brought him the cigarette he'd asked for and stood in respectful silence while Jon smoked it. It was Jon who broke the silence and again showed remorse as he talked about how hard his life had been and the desperation that had led him to committing theft. >> Me cost me a lot. >> I don't know. Yeah. Did you know that you had some warrants too? You had some felony warrants >> for possession. >> Yeah, for Yeah, for good stuff. [Music] >> Oh, >> what' you say that? Look at my age. >> Where's all your family? [Music] Are they still in the state or are they >> No, they >> awake. You haven't talked to them in a while. >> I was abandoned. I'd be shy for help, but we would help us. the streets. I hate it. I'm here. Didn't have a way out. We didn't have a way out. No matter where we turned to, how we'll help. >> It must have been hard for the officer to listen to John talk as he was just giving a sob story in the hopes of being let off with a warning or making an excuse for what he'd done. But the officer remained professional and showed compassion as John continued talking about his difficulties. >> I knew it was a job and that was it. I'd have been just fine. But man, you got this stuff hanging over your shoulder. Nobody wants to hire you. It's hell. Absolute hell, man. >> I've heard that before with people like with history and pasts and stuff. It's hard to for some places to find a job and to get a your feet set. >> Somebody would just give you a way out. You know what I mean? >> It's all you ask for is an opportunity. That's it. >> You end up desperate. I don't know if you know what that feels like, but that's the most pleasing, hungry. After the way he'd asked for help with his drug problem and his talk of just needing a job, it seemed like John genuinely wanted to turn his life around. He was charged with robbery. Though it was unclear if it would become a federal case, it's not easy being a police officer. Some incidents require a little help from civilians, and these unexpected people happen to often be in the right place at the right time.
