I just kind of I zipped him up. We thought it was funny and um we're joking about how she was is small enough to fit inside of the suitcase. >> Were you trying to kill him? >> Fabber. >> On February 24th, 2020, Winter Park, Florida, dispatchers pick up a 911 call from a crying woman claiming she's just found her boyfriend dead. When the cops arrived, the person on the other side of the call, Sarah Boon, claimed innocence, but the evidence was enough to prove otherwise. >> For everything you've done to me, >> you stupid. >> That's my name. Don't wear it up. Sarah, I can't breathe, babe. Where is he? >> Yeah, that's when you do when you trick me. >> Sarah, >> the muffled please you're hearing, they're coming from 42-year-old Jorge Torres Jr., a son, a father, an ex-husband, and the boyfriend of Sarah Boone. To her, it's all laughs and games recording the boyfriend as he gasps for air zipped inside a suitcase. >> You can't go back inside. What's going on? What? Who is he to you? boyfriend. >> Yes. Cuz for like three and a half years. >> What happened? >> He and I, we drank last night. Like he and I put a puzzle together. We've been doing some art together. >> You were putting a puzzle together. >> Yes. We have a puzzle that we started in there. >> Okay. >> We've been doing art trying taking stuff off the wall to to make new art together. Like having a good time with one another, but we're drinking. We had a bottle of wine last night. >> Okay. >> So then it's like we decided to play hide-and-seek, right? >> Okay. So he gets in the suitcase. >> Okay. >> Who is this guy? That's my ex-husband, my former husband. >> How did he live here with you guys? >> No, I called him over here. >> Okay. Okay. >> I didn't know what to do. >> Okay. >> I didn't know what to do. >> Okay. >> So then he came over here. >> Here, let's talk in private. Okay. >> I called you guys. >> I I The problem is is I fell asleep. I fell asleep. When did you do CPR? >> This morning when I found it. >> Before you called? >> Yes. 1:00 right now. I tried I was awake but I actually got out of the bed at like 12:30ish whatever. So I came downstairs >> and I was like he's in the suitcase still >> and that's when I found him and I took him out and tried doing CPR and then I called him and then I called you back. >> According to Sarah it was just a usual game night. No fight, no foul play. At least that's her story. But somehow she wakes up the next morning to find Jorge lifeless. So, you were playing and you who zipped him up in >> I did, but then I fell asleep. >> Okay. Okay. You're okay. I don't I wasn't here. I'm just trying to figure out what happened. >> I fell asleep. So, I don't know if he suffocated or like had an aneurysm or a heart attack or what. >> What kind of medical conditions did you have? >> None that I know of. >> Nothing that you know of any medical. >> All we had was a bottle of wine. Literally, just a bottle of wine. >> Okay. >> Doing puzzle artwork. Then we decided to play hide and seek. Mhm. >> That's all that happened. >> Okay. So, I don't know if he had a heart attack or what in there. Like, I don't know what happened. >> So, how long were you doing CPR on him prior to you calling 911? You tried that all morning? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> And then I called him while I was >> When officers pulled up to Sarah's place, they found her waiting outside. But she wasn't alone. Standing right beside her was her ex-husband, who said he'd only just gotten there himself. But what he said next was downright shocking. know if he has any met uh medical issues or >> I I don't. >> Okay. But you've met him before. >> I've met him before. Yes. Yes. They've got a full fun history. >> Oh, really? >> Oh, you guys like >> for the two of them? >> Yeah. He's been around like five times against her. So, >> really? Okay. I'm not familiar with I haven't been here personally. >> It's so they have >> he he's currently on parole because of it. So, um >> because of domestic violence with her. >> Yes. Yes. Okay. Okay. >> Yes. From last time he got um >> for like retrial something or other. He had to go to a um domestic violence class. I know he was doing at a parole officer. >> Mhm. >> Stuff like that. But I mean like every time she arrested the next day she was trying to get bailed out. So I I don't know what it is. >> It turns out the couple had a turbulent history. While Jorge did have a past marked by violence, this time around, Sarah was far from innocent or even reasonable. >> And at some point, you put him in the suitcase. >> No, he got in the suitcase. So, he thought it'd be funny to be put in the suitcase. So, I was like, "Okay, well, I'm going to joke with you and I'll zip you up, make him, you know, squirm a little bit, whatever it is." But then I fell asleep. >> Mhm. >> I fell asleep. >> Where was the suitcase? >> Right where he got in it. Right down there. You zipped him in there. Thought he was be funny. A little joke. >> It was. We both were laughing about it and then I fell asleep. >> Where did you fall asleep at? >> Upstairs >> in your bedroom. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Totally forgetting that he was in the suitcase dome. >> Okay. >> According to >> And then you came back downstairs >> this morning or this afternoon? Yes. When I got out what time? >> 12:30ish. I was awake, but I totally forgot that he was in the suitcase. He can tell you there's a lot of things that I think go jobs. Yeah, he did tell me >> all that good stuff. So >> Sarah's ex-husband had been trying to reach her all morning, but only received a call at 12:49 p.m. The exact moment she told him she had found Jorge lifeless. >> And I was like, I forgot he was in the suitcase and he wasn't moving. Nothing was happening. So I unzipped him, unzipped, unzipped, took him out and started doing CPR on him. >> Mhm. >> He was on his way over here. I called you when he got here. >> Once he got here, you called him? >> Yes. Okay. And it like air was coming out and he was gurgling. But >> Mhm. >> I could just tell by looking at him. >> But you knew how to do CPR. You doing that on your own? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> And then the person that was on the phone with me also, I counted with him doing it. >> The real shock, however, was what came next. Instead of dialing 911, her first instinct was to invite him out for a smoke and a drink to cope with the stress. Even as she waited for officers investigating inside her apartment, she repeatedly asked for a cigarette. I'm afraid for my life. I want you to know that I'm afraid for my life. >> His family have never liked me. I'm the blue white devil is what they call me. >> So, they've never liked me. They've never taken me in. They've never accepted me. I'll put it that way. >> Have you called any of them? >> Uh, we talked to his daughters yesterday. >> No, I mean like about this. Does anyone know? Okay. back. >> So, no one's going to know until we will be making that notification. So, >> they're going to tell me. >> Okay. >> Do they live local? >> Yes. They're down the road. They're going to tell me. His kids are going to tell me until they don't. They're going to tell me. This was not intentional. Okay. >> They're not going to understand that. They're not going to accept him. >> We're going to do a thorough investigation and we will we will take we will definitely >> make sure that you don't feel scared when we leave here. Her detached demeanor raised immediate suspicion. Jorge's body was sent for autopsy, and the following day, Sarah was brought in for interrogation. For investigators, it was only a matter of time before the pieces of this disturbing puzzle began to fall into place. >> So, he had some injuries to his left shoulder. He had um he had a cut near his like lip. We could see we could see his um his mouth was a little uh >> I haven't laid a hand on him. >> Okay. Also too, I he fell off my son's bike. >> Okay. >> So, I don't know. And he's notorious for running into the wall or the hall tree. So, why? >> Okay. >> I don't What about the scratches? >> Also, yes. >> Okay. Cuz there's also like a like a scratch on like the back of his neck kind of like going but it's like going straight across. I have no idea what that's from. >> And they're all recent. Like they they they occurred recently. He also had um like on the left side of his forehead he had basically bruising and um on like his head and skull. >> I have no idea. >> As if something hit him. >> I considered touch. >> I have not touched him. I have not touched him. >> Then how would you get those injuries? >> Tell me and we'll both know. I have not touched him. Up to this point, she insisted to detectives that she truly loved him. But the moment suspicion shifted in her direction, that tender facade cracked and her entire demeanor took a sharp defensive turn. >> I don't think you all understand. He comes at me all the time. He comes at me. So, it's either I flee or try to go upstairs and go to sleep. That's usually what it is. And I don't know if you talk to Brian about any of that, but most of the time when I flee, I go over there. So, >> right, but you're saying that you guys have been good. And when I asked you yesterday, there hasn't The last incident that you could remember was the curtain red incident, which you said was a month ago. So, >> give or take. >> Right. So, what do you mean by he comes after you like he gets belligerently drunk >> like I don't know if you all have looked through my phone yet and seen any of the pictures and the videos that I have taken >> and the at one point I started documenting everything. >> Okay. So you all will see in my pictures bloody fingers, split foreheads, he split my nose. >> Then why are you still with him? >> Everybody asks me that when I tell you guys this, I really love him. Like I do and I feel like I can help him. Like I feel like I could help him, which I did because he's come a really he came a really long way. Sarah portrayed herself as the devoted partner, the angel who endured the pain while trying to guide him toward a better path. But it raised a chilling question. Was what happened that night an impulsive act of frustration? A twisted attempt to teach him a lesson. >> So, I have something that I want to show you that we found. Um, and it was from your phone. >> Mhm. >> Can you see it? >> No, I don't remember that. for everything you've done to me. >> Sarah, I can't breathe. Babe, >> that's on you. >> Sarah, I can't breathe. >> It's on you, >> Sarah. >> Real might want to get for it extra cuz I got this. >> Serious. I can't breathe, babe. That's what I feel like when you drink on me. >> Sarah, >> you breathe. >> Sarah. >> Yeah, >> you should probably shut the up. >> Officers uncovered a deleted video from Sarah's phone. A discovery that instantly shattered her facade of innocence. For investigators, it felt like the final piece of the puzzle, the moment her drama came to an end. But Sarah wasn't finished yet. She wasn't about to give up without a fight. >> Do I have to watch this? >> I continuously throw up. I don't sleep. I don't want to see it if that's okay. >> Well, it's on your phone and you can either explain it or we take it for what it is. >> Yeah. We're just trying to give you the opportunity to tell us what's going on. That's it. >> I don't think you all understand who I am. where >> Okay. Well, tell me. >> I mean, I've always been a straight A student. I am an outstanding mother to my son. >> I excel at everything. I would not do that. >> You wouldn't lock some zip somebody in a suitcase. >> Well, I didn't like completely lock it. I mean, I opened it with one finger. I left enough in there for him to get out. >> Okay. >> And I wasn't planning on going upstairs and going to sleep. >> Okay. Sarah told officers that she and Jorge shared just one bottle of wine and that she, by her own admission, was fully in control of her senses. That left little room for doubt. Her actions weren't the product of intoxication or confusion. They were unmistakably deliberate. >> So, this is upside down. So, in order for him to have gotten into it, it was flipped up, >> right? It was flipped up normal, like as if you're packing something. So, this is upside down, >> guys. This is killing me right now. So, this image is upside down. And then this small video that occurred 11 minutes later, it's flipped over the other way closer to your dining room table. >> Okay. >> Now, he's obviously still in there. So, he didn't How did that How did it go from the back to the front? >> I flipped it. >> Okay. >> My plan was not to go upstairs and go to sleep. >> Well, that's what you did. >> Yeah. >> But not intentional, though. No, you told me you went upstairs because what >> you were getting ready for bed. >> Stop here. >> Okay, but here >> show me where you can see any fingers coming out cuz there's the end. >> Sarah stuck to her story. She claimed she went upstairs assuming Jorge would let himself out and stayed there for about 30 minutes before eventually falling asleep. >> But why is he saying I can't breathe and why is he pushing on it as if he can't get out? And it doesn't show a hole. >> You There's no hole. There's no fingers. I don't see his fingers. There's no hole. >> I don't know what you want me to tell you. Like I don't know like what you want me to tell you. >> I'm just showing you I'm just telling you what we see and what we've heard from the other video. >> I understand. I understand. >> He's begging to let for you to let him out. You sound You're laughing in the beginning and then in the end it sounds kind of like a >> No, it's not malicious. >> Well, same you. It's not malicious. >> Then what is that? >> My intention was not to leave him in there. >> Please understand that. My intention was not to leave him in there, but you went upstairs thinking that he could get himself out, but the video shows and I see his fingers and any minute >> and then 30 minutes later he didn't show >> and he's telling me. Do you think he's joking? You told me he was laughing and I >> We were before the video. There's There's no >> When we first got in there, >> both of us were. >> The interrogation dragged on for hours, but Sarah wouldn't budge, spinning nonsensical tales and painting herself as the helpless victim. >> But nowhere in there is he laughing. Is he joking? He is begging. And you're the only one laughing. >> Okay. And you're the only one saying derogatory comments like you're mad. No, please don't. I don't mean to sound negative and I don't know if I can say this, but like it's like you guys are kind of trying to like feed me like >> No, I'm just trying to show you a video that you no longer want to watch because you probably don't want to know the outcome of how and what you said. >> Well, I know what >> you you know what's on that video now? No. You remember making that video? Oh, >> why don't you remember making the video? >> Probably because we had been drinking. >> But you weren't drunk. >> Just because I went upstairs and just because you're drunk doesn't mean that you >> times that you were not drunk. You said that you had your wits about you. You said he had his wits about you. >> Mhm. >> You said that you don't like not having your wits. In my experience, if somebody cannot remember doing something to the extent of making two videos and a video and taking a photo, they are intoxicated. >> According to neighbors, Sarah's behavior was often alarming, often drunk out of her senses, knocking on random doors late at night. Her statements to police were riddled with contradictions. Each version of events chipping away at her credibility. You were able to unzip it from the outside very easily cuz that's the way they're designed. >> But you could on the inside, too. >> I don't know how. >> Well, why wouldn't he have gotten himself out if he could? He was >> I don't know. Like I don't know if he saw like where the hole was. >> I don't know. I didn't see a hole. >> I didn't see no fingers. You're the only one that's what I'm saying. Like he's in one position and where his head would be, we should be able to see fingers. And then when it's flipped over onto its right side again, his head is closer to us facing the video. So we should be able to see fingers and we don't see anything. We see no movement of him trying to unzip it or physically unzipping it. All we see is pushing up, trying to push out of it. >> Please do not assume. >> I'm not assuming. I haven't attended anything. I follow evidence. But my intention was not again. Oh, good. I got him in there. Now I'm just going to go to sleep. Detectives uncovered two videos taken just 11 minutes apart, and the second was damning. In it, Sarah had flipped the suitcase over, ensuring Jorge couldn't escape no matter how hard he tried. That single move not only trapped him completely, but also explained the fresh bruises found on his head. >> How did you not intentionally go to bed? You said you went up to upstairs and got into bed. That's intentionally going to bed. >> Waiting for him. >> And he doesn't come, but you don't go down to check on him. >> So, I happen to go to sleep. When I say go to sleep >> and what do you normally do? What are you going to do? >> What do you normally do when you go to bed? >> What do you mean? >> What is a bed for? >> Going to sleep. >> Right. >> So, you go to bed tell that like I >> go to bed what? Okay. You kept telling us, hey, I wasn't intoxicated. I wasn't this. I wasn't that. >> Being drunk and intoxicated, which >> yes, you can tell that I had been drinking, but >> Okay. So, if you weren't intoxicated, then why would you ever leave somebody in a suitcase that's begging to get out that's telling you they can't breathe? >> If I weren't, if I hadn't been drinking, you you still think it would be the same thing where it's like, hop in. Uh, I'm going to go to sleep. Is that what you all are trying to do to portray? >> I'm not trying to do anything. I'm simply asking you to explain to me what happened. According to the very timeline Sarah herself provided, she had more than enough time to let Jorge out. There was no reasonable scenario in which she could have left him trapped, begging, shouting, and finally succumbing for over 12 hours without intervening. >> And I understand the severity of this. I just >> No, YOU DID. >> IT'S AWFUL. I know. >> Okay. >> And I will tell you both this right now, too. I will never drink alcohol again. Okay? >> Like, I will never drink alcohol again. I don't care what it is in any way, shape, or form. But let's get back to this. What was the reason for leaving him when he's begging to be let out? I don't understand that. >> What I have a feeling was, and again, it's the whole time frame thing. You all >> I'm not asking a time frame. I don't care about a time frame. He's in the bag saying I >> And I my god, >> you say you >> when he So like for like the whole few minutes that he was in there, like I >> minimum 11. But yes, go ahead. While her guilt was evident, detectives still struggled to pin down a clear motive. Was it an act of frustration, fear, revenge, or something far more sinister? Even with the evidence laid bare, Sarah clung to the belief that she was the very picture of innocence and empathy. >> It's alcohol. >> Not again. The reason that you tell them >> you all, >> please sit down. >> Listen to me. So >> you all listen I did not not intentionally kill him. >> Okay. >> So your intention >> I don't know what it is I need to do or how to do it or what to say or how to say it. >> But your but what was your intention? Everyone knows. Everyone knows everything that I've done for George and love him and continuously help him throughout his life with me and made him a happier, better person. >> And everybody has their limit. >> Everyone knows that. >> Everybody has their limits. >> So it's like, okay, so while we're in a good place right now, I'm going to snap. Is that what it while we're in a good place right now? >> Absolutely. I got you on video screaming you. This is what it feels like when you're choking me. This is what it feels like. >> Which was however long ago. >> You said the >> videos was from last night. >> Clearly, >> so yeah. >> After hours of relentless back and forth between Sarah and the detectives, no solid confession ever emerged. Still, the mountain of evidence left little room for doubt, and she was formally charged with seconddegree murder. But when the case finally went to trial, what unfolded was more shocking than anyone could have anticipated. >> It got very heated very quickly, and he continued to push on the suitcase. And um my fear was that he was going to break out of the suitcase knowing that it was a broken suitcase. And um his hand started to come through. His his hand started to come through this way. And so I shook the suitcase. I shook the suitcase trying to get his hand to go back in, shaking it and telling him that please stop doing this. Please, please stop doing this to me. Please stop doing this to me. >> So his hand his hand actually got out of the suitcase. >> Yes. >> And you went to the suitcase? >> Yes. >> And shook it? >> Yes. >> Was he trying to get out >> forcefully? Yes. >> Was he angry at you? >> Yes. >> Were you in fear? >> Always. If he would have gotten out of the suitcase, what would he have done to you? >> Like he used to tell me, he probably would have made me unrecognizable or I would have uh lost my life. >> She blatantly claimed self-defense against the very man she had sworn to love more than anyone else. In court, Sarah insisted that if Jorge had managed to get out of that suitcase, her life would have been in imminent danger. >> So, in your mind, did you prevent him from attacking you? >> Absolutely. Did you believe that he could breathe in there? >> Yes. >> Did you ever believe he could die in there? >> No, at all. >> Were you trying to kill him? >> Never. >> Did you want to kill him? >> I did not. >> Her claim of facing imminent danger fell flat, especially when Wade against her earlier statements about the two of them having a pretty good time that night. The contradiction was hard to ignore, and it chipped away at the credibility she was so desperately trying to preserve. >> My goal begins with George Torres. And every time he slapped me, kicked, punched, spit on, stabbed, choked, laughed at, pushed, pulled, dragged, whipped, tripped, stole from, lied, terrorized, threatened, humiliated, forced, degraded, made me cry. every time he tried to end me, defeat or destroy. I forgive George for beating me senseless. For trying to sleep because I had to go to work or my son's field trip the next day. For ruining my deceased family's heirlooms, traditions and keepsakes. My son's furniture. Destroying the television we watched together. for wrecking our town home by breaking windows, punching holes in the walls and doors, ramming his entire body into glass doors, kicking in my front and back door over and over and over for breaking or removing the locks from all of the doors and sometimes the knobs altogether. So, I had nowhere to feel safe, including the sacred space of my son's room where he beat me bloody on his bed. A Florida judge ultimately handed down the maximum penalty, life in prison, finding Sarah Boone guilty of seconddegree murder in the death of her boyfriend, Jorge Torres. With that verdict, the years of conflicting stories, deleted videos, and claims of innocence came to a definitive end.
