I'm sorry, but he over here put his hands on me and my baby. >> 100% she's hitting me. >> Okay. And he's over here putting his hands on me. >> Witnesses tell police they saw the woman hitting the man, not the other way around. They claimed the man was trying to leave with the baby when the woman escalated by screaming and striking both him and an officer. >> Us up the whole time. Then that's a whole different thing. I'm not talking you up. I will respect you just like you. >> You're not respecting me. >> Talk to you. You're screaming in the baby's talk to me. You're pissing me off. >> Go to the sidewalk. I guess she seen him and then they went around. She grabbed him. They started coming out. So I told my husband, "Let's leave." Cuz there's a baby involved. >> Sure. >> Um so we follow him here. They were here. She He was like, "Listen." >> Yeah. We're 10 time. >> She he told her, "Listen, you need to calm down. Stop hitting me. I'm taking the baby with me." >> I got it all him on video. >> So he put the baby in the car. She started screaming. She started hitting him. He was like, "Listen, stop it. You shouldn't be hitting the guy." Took the baby, put the baby in the car, screaming, hitting him. Then the police came. The police told him to come back. They got out of control, which he wasn't wrong. They were out of control. >> Officers explained that placing someone in handcuffs is standard procedure for deescalation during domestic disputes. They emphasize it doesn't automatically mean arrest, but helps control the situation. Just the >> just the alterc. May I see that altercation? >> Just with the uh just with the um the the girl and the guy. >> So what you guys witnessed was the woman hitting him. >> I saw the police come down and honestly I'm going to be honest. Watch the video and listen cuz cuz he came aggressive at this black dude. Throw him in the back of the car." >> When when we handle our situations, >> when we put someone in hand cuz it doesn't mean they're going to jail immediately. You know what I mean? We that's what we do to to deescalate that fits >> and then we could try to work it out from there and then see who's the problem and and then that's you know what I mean. >> But let's uh let's look at this first. >> It's hard to see but but you can >> you can hear the conversation. >> You can you can take the phone. It's >> Oh, sure. >> But you'll pretty much hear the conversation like >> it's hard to see the people but you can hear. [Applause] And were they at Twin Peaks drinking? >> They was. I I saw them uh when they got to the corner here and I started recording when they got halfway cuz I saw like it was getting a little crazy. >> The detained man complains about tight handcuffs and insists he wasn't resisting. Officers try to calm him down, explaining their perspective that responding to screaming requires urgent action. >> All right. What is your name? >> Do you have your DL on you? >> Is it in your pocket or just let Is there >> It's in there. Okay, I'm going to grab your ID. >> Okay, that's fine. Just put just loosen the cups a little bit. I can't feel my hand. >> I will. As long as you maintain this, >> we're good. >> Okay, I'm chilling. >> I don't need to hear anything else. >> All right, let's walk away from >> Stay there. Stay there. Stay there, >> dude. I just told you to calm down, sir. >> I'm going to go around. >> Okay, >> so calm down. >> Can you communicate with me, >> Dude? No, I don't need to tell you what I'm doing. I don't need to tell you what I'm doing. If you don't calm the down, then it's not going to You're not going anywhere. Do you understand? >> What are you Are you on something right now? >> On what? >> I'm asking you. What are you on? You're acting like somebody very irrational. >> All right, bro. >> Please. The left one is so tight, >> man. Come on, man. Come on, bro. >> No, no, no. I I can't feel my left. Yo, sir. >> It's your left one. in the left one. Loosen just a little bit more. I can feel it. >> I cannot feel these fingers right here. I'm being real with you. I'm not trying to >> Dude, I can fit my whole Look, look, dude. I can fit my whole finger in there, bro. >> I can fit my >> Police explain why they detained the man first when responding to calls of a small woman screaming against a larger man. They prioritize immediate safety. The woman argues that the officer was aggressive and unfair. they hear a small woman, no matter what, whether you're Asian, white, or black, if they hear a small woman screaming on the top of her lungs to being abused >> to a larger man, who are we to to downplay that? >> Why do you assume? >> You called the police. You called the police along with other people calling the police saying that you're screaming. So that's why we come the way we can. >> Okay? >> So understand that. So then now we have to handle the job that you gave us. You called us here and then you hit now you're hitting officers >> being physical now. >> But then you made it. >> Isn't that more kind though? Ask questions before getting physical. >> Now flip side of that. This is just me talking. We don't even have to talk like this. But on the flip side, let's say we did come kumbaya, right? And you're getting your beat. Then you're going to say, >> "Okay, so then it calls for measures to detain somebody. But was I getting I didn't think so. >> No, >> I don't think that exist. >> Yeah, I just need to talk to her real quick for me. >> Yeah, >> let me talk to her in private. That's fine. That'll be great. Okay, that's all right. >> I would have wished that officer came like that. He said, "Move to the car. Move to the car." And he kept screaming at me like, "I'm at the car." And then he just gets all aggressive on me. I wasn't trying to attack him or anything. That was a resistant arrest. I followed his orders and I went straight to the car and then I'm in the back of the truck next to him. >> Officers clarify that the woman struck an officer during the altercation. So, she will be arrested for battery on law enforcement. They reassure that the charges will likely be minor and she'll be released soon. >> Verbal, physical, whatever. We'll detain one party until we figure it out. So, that's why you're put. >> So, we'll give you a case number, everything. We're going to do a report on this. Um, I think the the officer has your information. >> Uh, yes. I think it's in my wallet. Okay. >> Yeah. Yeah. It's on my whole body. >> Um and then is this your phone? >> Yeah, that's my phone. Thank you. >> So, we're going to do a It's called a a domestic report. >> Okay. And it's just a documentation of what happened. >> Yeah. He came here. Yeah. Basically, just it's going to be what he observed. Um he'll review his body camera footage and everything. Obviously, all that stuff was on tape. >> Okay. >> Um and then because she started hitting him, we have to arrest you for battery on law enforcement. No, her. You're you're >> you have to arrest her. >> Yeah. >> Are you serious? You have to take her to down to the office and everything. >> We have to. >> Oh, come on. >> So, let me let me explain what happens. She'll probably get out tonight. So, >> the woman becomes emotional, worried about her breastfeeding baby. Officers explain the bail process, reassure her about the baby's safety with the father, and prepare to transport her to jail. >> 2 hours ago, >> she go. So, I'll give you the information. It's sheriff.org. I'll write all this down, but sheriff.org. Type in her name. He'll tell you when she'll be able to get out. She'll get a phone call and everything, be able to call you, all that stuff. So, that's that's what's going to happen. >> I mean, I get I get that she started hitting him because he literally just started being aggressive with me for no reason. And >> my aggressive girlfriend, me and me and her in an argument for her to come over like, "Hey, what are you doing? That's too much. >> Come on, man." >> Well, like I said, guess you because you showed up to a scene, you guys are arguing. Figure out what's going on. Prevent further escalation. I'll be honest, it's going to get dropped. It's Broward County. Unless she like stabs an officer, they don't prosecute. So, she's going to take the ride for the night. I'll be honest, it's probably not going to go anywhere. But that's what's up. So, >> baby, I just went to the escape. >> I just wanted to go home. >> You're going to face this way. Okay. >> Okay. Do you have anything else on you anywhere? >> No. >> Who's the baby home with? >> That's my boyfriend. >> Your boyfriend? >> Yeah. >> Is that the boyfriend? >> We're going to put Hey, we're going to put her in that car. >> That's my boyfriend. Yeah. So, where's the baby? She's in the >> Oh, in the car. I think she's in the car. >> Okay. [Music] Um, the bailing. I'm sorry if I'm going to stay in jail for like a year or something. >> No. >> What's going on? Because I just wanted to talk. >> Officers explain jail procedures, removing piercings, property intake, bond options. The woman apologizes repeatedly, saying she only wanted a police escort home. >> 10%. So maybe if if you set your bond at $1,000, then it'll be hundred bucks. >> Okay. Okay. >> But that's Don't quote me. I'm just saying. >> But I know I just want to go home with my baby. He's breastfeeding. >> I understand. But whatever formula is >> whatever happened here today, that's not going to be an option. Okay. >> I know. I know. I'm sorry. I'll get in the car. I >> Do you have any piercings or anything? >> Uh yeah. My stomach disappeared so my ears are pierced. >> Okay. No, you don't have earrings in. Do you have a >> I do >> the belly button? No, don't do it here. They'll have I'm just letting you know what's going to happen when you get to the jail. They'll have you take all that stuff off at the jail and your >> keep my phone. >> No, no, no. Do you want to go with you or do you want to go with your >> I'd rather >> Okay. So, it'll um >> it'll go with the officer into your property. Okay. You can't have it back here, but it'll go with the officer into your property, which will go to the jail with you. >> Okay. Thank you so much. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. >> Life happens, right? >> I called I called I called so that I can be escorted home. >> So that I can be escorted home with my name. >> The woman Carlson faces charges including battery. Battery on a law enforcement officer, child neglect, and obstruction. The baby is confirmed safe and the detained man is released. Even minor arguments can spiral out of control when police get involved, especially if emotions run high. Stay calm, comply first, and sort out misunderstandings later to avoid extra charges. After you see the next case, you may want to think twice. It's shocking. And for more articles, subscribe to Law Zone if you like this. >> Wait, why you scraping my car? >> Get out of the car. >> I was getting out. You ain't going to shoot me. Where you going to shoot me? Got it. >> Put on the camera. >> I got it. >> On March 6th, 2023, three women shoplifted over $12,000 worth of luxury perfumes and cosmetics from Ulta Beauty in Lake County, Florida, fleeing in a gray Kia Optima. >> Tried to go head-on with me and now they're taking off down 60. One reckless choice can destroy your freedom and your future. But this is still not the worst case. Just wait until you see this next one. >> That is a setup. >> I completely understand. >> So why the am I going to jail when they just set me up? On April 8th, 2024, a woman responded to a Craigslist car listing and arranged to meet the seller. She asked to take the vehicle for a test drive, but never returned. The owner quickly called police who later tracked her down. >> What's going on, man? You just riding in the car by yourself. Like, I didn't see you jump over. >> No. >> Get out the car. >> That wasn't me. >> Yeah, it was. >> No, it wasn't. >> All right. Who was it then? >> They just went in there. >> No, they didn't. Why are you lying to me? Stop reaching around the car. >> Huh? >> Stop reaching around the car. >> Okay. >> Car be on uh Buick Lasaber King Henry Nora 8107 coming back stolen. >> This woman. She tried to cover her tracks by insisting that someone else had been driving the car. Then she switched her story, claiming the owner had actually allowed her to take the car alone to a gas station. >> Pull off with the car. >> I don't know. What's the problem? >> The car is stolen. >> Huh? >> The car is stolen. >> No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Hold on. >> Put your hand behind your back. >> I'm not You didn't see me driving the car. >> Okay. Yes. No one got out of the car. >> All right. Just go ahead. Put your hand. >> Someone did get out the car. >> Okay. Where' they go? >> The hill. >> Where' they go? >> Right there. >> Who is it? right there. >> What's your name? >> Here, put your put your hands together like you pray. >> No, cuz I didn't do anything. >> Stop. Stop. >> Get off of me. You got to arrest me for not driving. >> You're being detained right now. >> I didn't do anything. >> Okay. >> The officer couldn't help but laugh at the woman's outrageous story. He just couldn't believe she thought this excuse would fly. To make it even more absurd, she then claimed the owner had given her the car, so it already belonged to her. >> You have it in hand? >> Yes, she just gave me this car. Okay. Where's the Where's the title at? >> Can I get the car? Can I get the title? She just gave it >> I can I can get it for you. >> She just Where is it? >> Just stay right there. You can just tell me. >> Verbaliz purse. She literally just gave it >> in your purse. The camo purse. >> You want me to grab it for you? >> This is only supposed to be a test drive. >> And my boyfriend was in the house. If she truly believed the car was legally hers, why would she hop into the passenger seat and deny ever driving it? When the officer opened the car to retrieve her purse, he discovered several purses inside. >> I'd say so myself. >> Hold on. I'm I'm not running. Come up. I'm trying to get you the title, sir. >> How long you had the car? >> Like five minutes from >> literally a test drive. Hold on. >> You know the name of person you got it from? Pat. It's right. Hold on. It's a It's a It's a a female. >> Hold on. >> I'm getting the title. >> You're not You're not going in the car. >> The title right there >> in this thing? >> Yes. >> The officer looked over the title and reminded her that just holding it didn't prove ownership unless her name was printed on the document. Flashing it around did nothing to back up her claims of innocence. >> And say somebody else is driving it. And then you told me you was driving it. Well, I was taking it to the mechanic to have him look at it. >> Why? Why li Why? You see where you already compounded a lie? >> I compounded a lie before. >> Why did you jump over in the passenger seat then? >> Because I haven't got the title transfer yet. >> You said nothing about test driving it until you found out it was stolen. >> Well, that's because y'all just said it's stolen, but I haven't title. >> Why did you hop over in the passenger seat? >> Who was driving the car >> earlier? What's you? >> Anybody or no? >> My boyfriend told me come meet him over here to have a mechanic look at it. >> Who's your boyfriend? They didn't tell me nothing about it being stolen. >> My boyfriend's name is Terrence. >> Terrence what? >> Terrence Mitchell. >> He's told me to come get it. >> Come get it. Look me random. For what? >> You're under arrest. >> For what? >> I have the title right there. This is not a stolen car. >> The title in your name. >> The I'm test driving it. How the am I supposed to find the car? >> You got your >> They setting me up. >> What's up? I don't have mine, but I >> I can't go to jail for being having a stolen car, and I didn't even I haven't even bought the car yet. >> Well, you don't. >> But I have the title. >> You don't buy a stolen car. >> Even after the officers laid out the facts, clearly, the woman just didn't seem to grasp reality. When they finally escorted her to the squad car, she suddenly demanded her personal belongings back and grew extremely aggressive toward the officers. >> The card that was given to me with the title. Okay, but that's No, that's a setup. >> That is a setup. >> I completely understand. So why the am I going to jail when they just set me up? >> No. That get off of me. No. Get off of me. >> Stop, miss. >> I don't have no right to be arrested. And I wasn't driving. >> Miss, calm down. Calm down. I'm going to read you, Miranda. Maybe unarrest me because I wasn't driving the car. >> Miss, just calm down, brother. >> I done been through enough. And y'all keeping me over. That motherucker just gave me that car with the title and I didn't even buy it and took my money. How the am I going to jail? >> How much did you pay for the car? >> The hell? I haven't even bought it yet. >> She seemed to believe that yelling and throwing a tantrum would somehow persuade the officers to let her go. But instead of helping her case, her behavior escalated her aggression soon crossed the line into outright violence. In the middle of the struggle, the woman even tried to bite one of the officers. They eventually secured her in the back of a squad car so they could continue the investigation. >> Before I go to jail, no. Tell me this. Y people all the time. Y people all the time. Please take my life because I want to I don't want to live. >> You going to get robbed. >> I don't want to live. >> They took everything from me. >> Here. I'm going. >> They taking everything from me. No, they took it all. I want to I want you toing >> here. Turn that. >> Please >> turn that back. >> The devil didn't look at my face. Look what he did to me. >> After a long and chaotic back and forth, she eventually settled down enough to listen. At that point, she agreed to explain her side of the story and talk with the officers about what really happened when she first picked up the car. >> You mother just want to keep hurt me. I hate you. I hate you. I hate you. I ain't drove and call the police on me. I hope you I hope you that junky that just sold her [ __ ] and I couldn't even test try to you won't call the police on me you have no right to be arrested >> I want to be unarrested that's not fair >> I would rather die than go back to jail I will kill myself in if I go to jail for nothing. >> Open your ears and close your mouth. Okay? Now, listen to how I'm going to explain this to you. In order for us to talk to you about who set you up, we have to read this to you. >> Can you see my face? >> You have to verbally say you understand or you do not understand. And you have to verbally tell us that you want to talk to us or you do not want to talk to The woman eventually confessed that she had just been released from jail and was homeless, which officers suspected was her motive for stealing the car. She then shifted the blame, claiming her boyfriend. >> Craigslist for sales. >> Uh-huh. >> I met them at the BP. That's it. I was told to take it to the mechanic to have it looked over. >> I've just got out the county homeless with nothing. Okay. >> And I've been on the streets. I have a book bag and they told me to test drive it and take it to the mechanic. My boyfriend. >> When officers asked if she had any of the Craigslist messages, she admitted she didn't. They also questioned her about her driver's license and she confessed she didn't have one because of prior court issues. >> Godamn mother to me and keeping me motherucker. Get me out of this. No, I don't deserve to go to jail. You can't even say what the you arrested me for. I don't want to go. I don't want to go. I don't want to live no more. >> All right, miss. We going to get you out of here. Okay. You going to walk on your own? You ready? >> No, I'm not ready. I just did days in this. Okay. the you mean man. Okay. >> Get off of me. I'm just here. >> She shouted all the way into the jail, making quite the dramatic entrance for herself. In the end, she was hit with multiple charges, including abuse, probation violation, grand theft auto, and receiving stolen property. Lies and tantrums won't cover up a crime. The truth always catches up. Bad choices only pile up worse charges, turning a mistake into a downfall. If you like this video, please sign up for Law Zone to receive more. Look out for the next shoplifter who will react even more aggressively. >> Or what did you what did you what did you buy? >> I brought some frozen food, a piece of of pizza that's going to go bad. >> On August 25th, 2024, police pulled over a woman suspected of shoplifting. She casually insists she just came from Starbucks, not Walmart, despite her car looking like a mobile shopping mall. >> Uh she said that she just came from Starbucks, not from Walmart. Uh said she was there, but earlier in the afternoon, so >> Okay. >> Yeah, but she does have a bunch of bags and stuff in the uh back seat for passenger seat. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> So, I don't know why. >> So, you said you left Walmart a couple hours ago. >> Yeah. And then I was well maybe it was like an hour ago and then I went to um Dwell after you might have saw you you went to we're going to figure it out. >> Hey Campbell what time was that picture that you captured her at? >> I mean she could be wrong. She could be wrong, too, but we just want to make sure that it's not the case or it is the case before we let you whatever it's called. >> She bought sunflower seeds. Uh, >> thanks. >> Were you going to show me that again? Sunflower seeds, a blender, cuz the camera shows you it even at 405. not an hour. >> I mean, I don't know what they're >> You don't have a receipt or anything? >> I don't normally pick them cuz they throw them out. >> When asked for a receipt, she takes the scenic route first. It's the Walmart app. Then maybe an e- receipt. Then she's not sure at all. Plot twist. She might not even have shopped there. >> Yeah. What about your online order? Start with >> use the Walmart app. >> No, wait. >> Is there a secret? >> I thought I clicked the button, but >> Okay. Sorry. >> Honestly, I need >> Do you bring your own bags in then? >> Yeah, usually. >> Okay. Then did you get all this stuff from Walmart? No, I bunch of flowers in the bag. >> Oh, I saw them at Walmart, too. >> I didn't know. >> What's in the What's in the bags, then? Or what did you What did you What did you buy? >> I bought some frozen food, a piece of pizza. That's going to go bag >> if it's in the bag. >> But, I mean, I don't know why they would accuse me of something like that. I mean, I just walked out cuz I had >> pay and I don't know why they would have me. >> Did you pay for everything? >> Of course. >> Can you show me what you said? >> There is a frozen pizza. And >> so can you show me if you did it online then you would have had that order online on your phone? >> No, I didn't do an online order. >> You said you just told me that you >> No, sometimes I click the button for paper receipt. Sometimes I click the button for email. >> So then why did you show me something on why are you trying to show me something on your phone as you didn't do an online work? >> I because you can do e receipts. >> Officers try to figure out how she paid. She can't remember if it was cash card or magic. Eventually she confidently guesses two 10 and a 20 for $40ish. >> Remember what? >> No, it was a market card. And then I went to go look for something else cuz then I was like, "You know what? It's time to go cuz it's already 4:00." >> So you went to the market side and then you left or did you go back in the store or >> No, I went back in the store to look for something else and you know what? I don't need it. >> Okay. >> I don't know what I did with this. If I grab the printed one or >> what? I said I probably >> So you're you're not you're not telling me the truth. >> She can't right now. >> But how can you tell somebody that I put it in the bag? >> She said she never got a printed one and then >> she thought she went paperless but they never >> Did you use cash card? Um, >> she doesn't know. >> Cash. >> Used cash? >> Yeah. >> Okay. How much was it? >> It was I don't know like 40 >> 40. >> All that stuff. The the two plants are more than $40. >> The plants are from Home Depot. >> She's saying she used Do you use just 10, fives, 220s? >> Um, a 20 in. She used a 20 and two 10 >> apparently. >> Yep. >> Give me a few minutes. >> Sorry. >> I'm going to move our cars out. >> Yeah. Just give him a couple minutes. He'll give us a call. the apartment side and then you went back into the store is what you're saying. >> Yeah. And then he walked out the other side >> and then you walked out the other side. >> When loss prevention was trying to like get a hold of you and stuff, why did you like keep walking? >> Because they have no right to >> they work for the store. >> The real red flag. She walked right past Walmart security when asked to show a receipt. She claims she bought pizza, Pop-Tarts, lemon juice, and tea, but still won't let anyone peek in her mystery bags. >> They work for the store. It's her job. >> I get that. What? >> I told them about that part. All right. >> Yeah. But don't you see think it seems a little weird if someone from Walmart's asking to show you a receipt or for you to show them a receipt and then you say, "I have one, but I'm not going to show you." And then you just keep walking. >> I don't know if I printed out or stuffed in my bag. >> I'm sorry. >> So, how much stuff did you buy with your $40? I bought a frozen pizza. >> A pizza. >> Um, [Music] some Pop-Tarts and um, what's it called? Granola bars. I got some lemon juice. >> Lemon juice. >> Okay. >> And I want to cook dinner later. >> So, lemon juice, granola bars, a pizza, and Pop-Tarts. Officers surprisingly patient give her every chance to prove she's innocent. Instead, she performs the dodgeball Olympics, dodging every question with flare. >> So, it's probably the easiest way to help you out in this case. You're saying you're telling the truth. >> I mean, if you stole, you stole. Did you steal? >> No, I did not. >> Okay. Do you want to prove your innocence and show what's in the bags? It just be so simple if it was if I was in your shoes right now and I was with two. >> I know you're just trying to keep your job, but I don't like people. >> I I get that. >> We're giving you the benefit of the doubt. Go home to eat my pizza to get my flowers home. I say, "Officer, what are you talking about? Look at my bag. This is all I have. It was $40 worth. I just told you I bought stuff." But you're you're not doing that. And that's just making it difficult for me to believe. We're giving you the benefit of the doubt and having you giving you the ability to show us what you bought. >> I I know. I can't see it though. >> I know. >> Cuz you did. >> Once you guys come in, you're going to start looking for everything. >> Is there something in the car that shouldn't be in the car? >> No, we're talking. No, I'm serious. No, I just >> Cops tell her surveillance footage will soon reveal the truth. Whether she walks away with a misdemeanor or a felony depends on how many unpaid snacks she hoarded. >> It would be so much easier if you just let us look in the grocery bags. Cuz if you did end up stealing, I'm not saying you did, but if you did end up stealing, we're going to find out. The officer that's at Walmart's coming and he has the video and he's watching the whole store video. We're giving you the benefit of doubt just so if you did not steal, you can prove your innocence. And once he gets here, it's a mistake. That's what's frustrating. We're trying to help you. >> Well, what do they want? >> Well, they're they're accusing you of stealing. They want to press charges. Okay. So, this is the deal, right? >> This is the deal. Let me talk. They know you took stuff. The other officer that was at Walmart is coming in here. They saw you in the store with the bags. Okay. Did you get What did you get at Home Depot? Just the flowers. >> Yeah, the clothes. >> Okay. >> Everything from Walmart is in the bag. >> Okay. So, I'm going to take the bags cuz it's evidence. [Music] >> We got to figure out how much it is. >> It's It's not like What? Grand Theft is like $1,000. >> It's 300. >> 300 >> for a felony retail theft. It's 300 bucks. >> And boom. She confesses to stealing flowers from Home Depot. Not exactly a getaway plan worthy of Oceans 11. >> You go to Walmart. >> Yeah. >> That's Walmart because they just pay for Walmart. [Music] to pay for. >> So, this is all unpaid for >> this. Yes. >> We just We need to bring it back to the store. >> I know. >> Is all this from Home Depot? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> We're going to collect it back cuz we need to get it back to the store. Okay. Wait, can I turn on anything? >> So, Lauren, here's what I'm going to do. Uh, you >> just put in my car. I can do this part. >> I'll tell you, I'll put on the driver's side of my car. >> I appreciate your Let me just [Music] see Mark 83. >> Wait, can I just leave it? Not leave my car right here. We're going to figure that out in just one moment. Okay. Are these too tight at all? >> No, they're fine. >> Game over. She's arrested and charged with retail theft from both stores. Officers gather all her freebies for evidence and return while she gets a pair of metal bracelets for her trouble. Lying and dodging only make things worse. Honesty could have helped her case. Shoplifting for multiple stores turns a bad decision into serious legal trouble. But this is still not the worst case. Just wait until you see this next one. >> Is that your car? >> No, it's not. >> Is the car stolen? >> No, the car not stolen. >> Whose car is it then? >> It's my mom's car. >> Some thieves care more about stealing in style than staying out of trouble. Like this next group who rolled up to a beauty store in Neil, Illinois in a sleek black Mercedes. But their bold entrance was met with an even bigger surprise. Police were already waiting inside. For this trio of wouldbe thieves, it turned into a day they won't soon forget. being good. >> Got really small wrists. Okay. >> Okay. Okay. Okay. >> Um, >> could I get my phone? >> You guys stay safe. One second. >> You don't make the rules here. You just stole from this place. >> Okay. Patrol officers were already on alert after reports of a black Mercedes being involved in two Ulta beauty thefts. While monitoring the Ulta on Aurora Avenue, they spotted the suspect vehicle in the parking lot. Three individuals exited the car and entered the store. After confirming it was the same vehicle from previous thefts, officers waited. When the suspects returned, carrying bags likely filled with stolen items and jumped into the Mercedes. Police quickly moved in. The suspects tried to flee and even struck a police vehicle, but they were swiftly boxed in and apprehended. >> Yeah, they came out with three bags. Hey, boss man. I'm I'm on body cam. Hey, we're at the Alta. We uh got some retail fevers in custody. Uh they hit one of our cars. So, just letting you know. >> Yep. We have three. custody. >> J Adam injured. >> I just want to call my mom. >> Are you injured? >> How old are you? >> I'm 19. >> 19. >> She is pregnant. >> I just want to call >> Please don't record. >> Don't call your mom. >> No, I said I just >> do want to call her to let her know. No good. >> The situation remains relatively calm as officers detain the suspects and prepare them for transport. All three are expected to be arrested for theft. However, one of the young female suspects objects to the arrest, expressing frustration and refusing to cooperate fully with the officers. >> Um he's just confirming all three. >> Yeah, we can uh we can probably throw them in cars though cuz they're there's PC. >> Yep. Okay. So, I'm going to climb She >> she What's going on with her? >> You understand that you're under arrest everywhere? Okay. >> I I do understand that. I just want to know she under arrest as well. >> Yeah, everybody's under arrest. >> What's she under arrest for? >> What are you under arrest for? >> Are you unclear? >> Yes. I do want to know what all I'm being charged with right now. >> You're not being charged with anything right now. You're in You're under arrest right now for the >> Okay. cuz you guys steal >> and she going to be under arrest for that. >> The video is muted for some reason, but it's obvious that the girl is trying to come up with some lame excuse for the situation. My guess is she was trying to blame the theft on her friends, but this cop isn't buying. >> Went in there and stole some stuff. You guys don't have any receipts for the stuff you just brought out >> and you guys been stealing from other places today. >> Like we was just tired of it. That's why we stopped you finally. All right, you guys all went in. You guys all stole stuff. You guys all brought up today. >> You guys all came out fast. >> The video may be muted, but the girl's body language speaks volumes. It's clear she's scrambling for an excuse, likely trying to shift the blame onto her friends. However, the officer remains unfased, clearly not buying the story. The evidence and their coordinated actions makes it hard for any of them to dodge responsibility. >> You guys have been at three different four different stores. or is it five? How many stores have you been to today? Okay. This doesn't actually require an interview because everything's captured on video >> and there's people that do this all day. Loss prevention. >> Yeah. >> So So it don't it don't matter. >> It's retail theft. >> Okay. >> Have you ever been arrested for retail theft? No. It's the first time. Have you ever been arrested? No. Okay. Have you? So, the process is you get handcuffed, you get taken to a jail, you get fingerprinted, photographed, you get charged with retail theft, you have to pay people back, you have to give your the property back. >> Okay. >> Uh you get caught again, it's going to be a felony. Today might be a felony because of the amount they sto with your first felony. That's a bad day. >> Yeah, it is a bad day. >> This cop wasn't sugarcoating anything. He was being blunt, maybe even more candid than protocol typically allows. In a moment that felt more like a life talk than an arrest, he gave the young woman a strange piece of advice. Something along the lines of, "If you're going to do crimes, at least don't do them with people dumber than you." It was raw, unexpected, and oddly reflective, leaving the suspect more stunned than angry. >> Or other tense, go to Cook County. I heard they don't prosecute anything. >> I heard you, sir. You're not injured and all that. So, why'd you run into our car? >> I don't know. >> She's trying to get away. Is that your car? >> No, it's not. >> Is the car stolen? >> No, the car not stole. >> Whose car is it then? >> It's my mom's car. >> Your going to take >> I just want to figure out what's going to happen with the car. >> What's going to happen with the car? >> It's going to get towed. >> Okay. >> I I don't know. possibly. >> Possibly seized. >> Cease. That means if it's seized, it means that we're going to take the car. We're going to sell it. >> Can >> What's your first >> Can there be any way we work? >> We We can talk about that. >> We'll talk about the jail. >> As a female officer searches the woman, a male cop asks a routine but serious question whether she's a drug user and if she might have any needles in her pocket. The suspect denies it, and the search turns up nothing dangerous. Besides a single dollar and some over-the-counter pregnancy medication, she's pretty clean. Her belongings are bagged up for processing while the consequences of her choices begin to sink in. >> What's cooperating with me? I'll cooperate with y'all. I don't want to make it harder than it got to be today. >> Thank you. >> That means a lot. >> Cooperation's going to go a long way. Okay. >> Thank you. >> Yeah. That's your sister. >> Younger sister. >> Older sister. >> All right. You make mistakes, right? Like I told her, nobody's injured. Okay. This is a theft, >> right? Was it dumb? Yes. >> But we're going to learn from that. That's what today's >> The female officer asks about the pregnancy and the woman says she's 6 months along with a baby boy, but her face shows no joy, only fear. >> Baby, there you go. >> Good goal. >> Exactly. >> Thank you guys for not being >> hard today. >> I appreciate >> I appreciate you putting the car in park and then nobody else got injured. Okay. >> Thank you. >> That that could have been bad. >> Okay. Okay, I'll tell you next time, just stop, right? Cuz it's it's going to go like this. Otherwise, it could have been a lot worse, right? Especially when you're pregnant, you want to be getting in an accident. Okay? >> The officer emphasized cooperation, encouraging the suspect to keep working with law enforcement, not against them. But it seemed the suspect was more concerned about what awaited her at jail. She also hinted that not everyone involved was equally guilty. A claim that's hard to believe given the circumstances. >> I want Michael searching. It's nothing in there. So, >> it's a yes or no. >> No, I don't want >> I just seen I was just kind of like gauging your level of cooperation. There's stolen property in plain view. So, that kind of opens it up and we're >> already It's already y'all already. >> We I was just looking to see like >> Do you want to look at the trunk or something? Is there anything in the trunk? >> You can open it. Go ahead. But it's it's nothing in there. Okay. >> One light for the car to be searched. It's not my car. >> I got you. So, because there's stolen property in plain view. >> Uh that's why it's going to be searched in because it has to get towed. It has to be searched anyway. >> Yes, that's what I said. It's already going to be searched. >> I was just going to see like, oh, let's see how cooperative she's going to be. >> It was kind of like a test. Are you going to pass test down the road? like when we try to talk to you. >> What you mean >> be a little more cooperative? >> I'm not trying to make this a test or >> No, it's fine. We're going to put you in the car over here. Okay. >> Cuz um have you ever like been through this before? Like arrested anybody for like similar to this >> for retail theft? >> Yes. >> Could you tell me like how the process of >> Yes. So you read your Miranda, right? Is that correct? >> Yeah. >> Yes. Okay. So obviously you know that you were under arrest and like they told you you're under arrest for retail theft. Okay. Um, so obviously the proceeds are in the car, which we've already were able to see right away. Okay. And I believe your cooperation. Did you already tell them that you did take some items from in the store today? >> I already did. Yes. >> So with that being said, that is kind of why you're under arrest today. Um, depending on who um I don't know if it's going to be myself or we might have some other individuals that want to speak with you, okay, about this today. And we'll do that at the jail. We don't want to do it right out here because there's so many people. We just want to get you back there, air conditioned, get the process going cuz ultimately you're going to come back to the >> Can I get a jacket out my car? I don't want to be cold while >> you actually can't have one in the jail. We do have blankets though. >> Okay. >> Dariel Rice, 19, Skyler Esco, 19, and Jayla Alen, 20, were all arrested and charged with two counts of felony retail theft and one count of burglary. Dariel faced additional charges for attempted criminal damage to government property and driving without a license. Although all three were released pending trial, Neil police are still investigating their possible involvement in other retail thefts, so more charges may be on the way. Stealing in style still ends in cuffs. Crime doesn't care about appearances. Even flashy getaways can't outpace solid police work and surveillance. On February 5th, 2024, officers responded to Kohl's in reference to a shoplifting in progress. When the first officer arrived on scene, he was met by a loss prevention associate at the front doors. The associate said he observed a known shoplifter enter a dressing room where he suspected she was concealing items on her person. >> All right. She's in the changing room right now. She's got jewelry and some clothing in there. She's trying to conceal on her person. I got footage from her in the past store and stuff like that. Okay. You have an LP office? >> Yeah. I kind of right over here on the right. >> Where's the room? >> So, what does she look like? >> African for your AIDS. Gray sweatpants, black hoodie with a white symbol on the back. Okay. We'll wait right here for her. loss prevention LP had previous footage of the same woman shoplifting but had not yet filed a report due to time constraints. >> Y'all never see two? >> No, she it's been recent. I was going to fill out police report. I got all the evidence and everything. >> Just haven't had time to put in a police report. been busy. >> I gotta 2531. Where you at? If you come in the store, we're going to be in the center by these bitt if you want. >> I know what I'm looking for. Officers locate the suspect and she attempts to flee the store, but is quickly apprehended outside in the parking lot. >> Excuse me. >> Come here, sir. Go ahead and come with me. >> Where? I ain't got it this comment. 231. So far, I got one running. [Applause] Get out of co. >> Where you at? right out front. She's in custody. >> Now, that was about the dumbest thing you could have done. >> Why we run? >> Cuz I'm on my my nose. All >> this I with somebody and they had me stealing. Oh. The woman claims someone else made her steal socks and expresses disbelief about being arrested just for socks. >> For socks. Going to jail for socks. [Music] >> Let's get inside. If they got a loss prevention area, we'll search her there. Yeah. Let's get James. Where's your LP office? >> All right. Searching. >> You got gloves? >> Yeah. There's something right here. >> During a search in the loss prevention office, a suspect admits to concealing items in her pants and under her hoodie. >> Yeah, I see it. All right. Hey, look at me. You're a female. I'm going to search you. I'm going to walk through what I'm doing as I'm doing it. Okay. >> Okay. >> How much stuff do you have on you? >> I do have some in my pants. >> Okay. Do me a favor. Face towards the camera or face away from me. All right. I'm going to pull the back of this way. Is it underneath here as well? >> Okay. [Music] Tracer won't run off. Give me five minutes. >> Oh, here. He's where >> we're coming for. Go ahead and send me a case number. >> Hey, she's got a buddy that was here with her last time. He's at the registister right now trying to check out. Is he attempting to shoplift? >> No, not this time, but we got a case. >> Did you follow case number with us and everything? No. Yeah. Well, I got this. We got nothing on. >> All right. I'm going to unzip your jacket. What are we wearing underneath it? >> Oh, I just got on my shirt and my >> Okay. Officers inform her that fleeing added an extra charge and that she is being taken to jail. I'm going to check your sleeves. >> Picking up your hair to check your hood. I'm behind you. All right. Here's what I'm going to tell you. Look at me. Because you ran, you have an extra charge. >> Okay. >> You are going to go to Perry. >> Okay. Concealing stuff on you when you get inside of Perry is an extra charge. >> Did I miss anything? No, sir. >> Okay. >> The suspect falsely claims to be a minor born in 2012, but is quickly corrected. She is actually 20 years old. >> Not me being a minor, but I got >> You're a minor. How old are you? >> My November 14th, 2002. >> How old are you? >> Hold on. >> You said 2002. You're 20. >> You're not a minor. Mine are people under the age of 18. >> Okay. >> Okay. Should be a $300 bracelet somewhere. >> Where's the bracelet at? >> I left it. >> You left it? >> Did you take it out of the packaging? >> Uh, no. Yeah, I left it in the thing. >> Okay. These are $40 shirts. [Music] Have a seat. All right. All right. >> I don't know if you heard, but multi multi warrants. >> Okay. >> Um I think two through bib, one through cob. >> Babe and cob. >> Yeah. Okay. Go ahead. Stand up for me. >> And one in gold. >> Uh pricewise. It's just >> the total value of stolen items exceeds $500, making the offense more serious. Some items like a necklace were still missing. >> Is this I'll get you a receipt and give it to you. >> I've got them. >> Oh, you already got it. >> Price is enough. I'm just trying to think. Still still shop. >> I don't know what the total was. >> U round six. >> Okay, it's f >> Yeah, it's fing shoplifting. Okay. Yeah, it's over five because of the necklace that's still missing. And we got to that though once we started adding up the shorts and stuff. >> Yeah, >> that's why I don't do this so cold too expensive. >> I know. They sell caterpillar jackets. I didn't even know Caterpillar had a line of clothes. >> Yeah, it's crazy. Wow. Officers reflect on the incident, noting the shoplifters's poor decision to flee and how coordination helped ensure her quick capture. >> Thank you. >> Look like you had fun. >> Try to like transport us cuz I thought they were over there. >> No, we both pulled up here. I went one I went the wrong direction. I think that's why she took off. Go ahead and have sweet for me. >> She was charged with theft by shoplifting felony and obstruction. My demeanor. She was sentenced to 2 years in jail and 10 years of probation. Attempting to flee only worsens legal consequences. And dishonesty, eg lying about age, doesn't help.
