Listen to what you're saying. >> I'm I need you to verbally confirm what >> I'm handicapped so I can't like I'm mentally first. >> I wasn't trying to I have I have a gift card. >> In today's world of surveillance footage and cell phone cameras, it's almost impossible to sneak out of a business with unpaid merchandise. So right when they thought they might get away, that's when these dumb shoplifterss get instant karma served to them by the cops. Gregory's grandmother calls police reporting that her grandson stole from her and is on bail. Officers quickly spot someone matching his description, though he initially gives the false name Lawrence. >> First name, man. >> What's your first name? >> Lawrence. >> Lawrence. >> It's not Gregory. >> No. >> Do you have an ID? Just so we can confirm that >> you're matching a sub a uh a suspect's description. Black puffy jacket. That's why I'm asking. ID. >> You don't have any ID. You said your name is Lawrence. >> He's pretty threatening now because, you know, the way he was acting when he was here, he was very, very angry. >> What's he wearing right now for pants? >> Like dark dark gray tight pants. Jeans. >> Should be like dark gray tight pants or jeans. Where do you stay at, Lawrence? >> I'm homeless. >> You're homeless? >> Yeah. >> You don't have any weapons on you? No. >> Can you take off your mask for me? >> It's co I'd rather not outside. >> Yeah. >> Do you have facial hair? No, >> it kind of looks like him. That's why I'm asking. How old are you, man? >> 20 23. >> 23. >> Yeah. >> So, your name's not Gregory. >> So, how can we disprove disprove that then, man? >> No. >> No. No. Nothing. >> So, you wearing white sneakers? >> White sneakers with black and red. >> Black and red sneakers. And then, yes, with a black uh with a backpack. All right. So, how is he threatening you? >> A taser malfunction leaves only firearms as backup. Gregory resists hard forcing officers to hold him at gunpoint before finally taking him down. I I'll be right back. Sorry. The officer's taser probe wire is wrapped around the taser due to the failed deployment, rendering it unusable. Now the only tool he has available is his firearm. >> Don't move. Get out, man. >> Get down on the ground now. Get on the ground. One that gun point. >> He keeps struggling, complaining about his arm while officers fight to get the cuffs on. After repeated commands, they finally gain control. >> Get on the ground. Get on the ground now. cooperate. >> Just [ __ ] put the cuffs on me. >> Cooperate then. >> Oh, you about to hurt my arm, man. Just put the cuffs on, man. Stop resisting. >> Put your hands behind your back. Hurting my arm, man. Hurting my arm. Hold my arm. Hold my arm, man. Well, stop resisting. We got one black male detained. >> We got one blackmail. >> Okay. Where the >> 10? We'll get a car to you. >> 248. Where are you guys at? >> It's going to be a roundabout in the neighborhood of M. >> Well, I cannot breathe. >> We'll try to get in. Stand up. Stand up. >> You didn't cancel anything. >> Where? >> Numeric 12. >> Numeric 1264. >> Of what? Where the [ __ ] are you guys? >> Sit on the ground. Good. Yep. medical to our 20 for tasing. >> You good for a second? Yep. >> Hey, what street is this? What street? What street is this? >> Never mind. >> 154. >> Stay over there. You're good, sir. >> Stay over there, please. >> Stand up. >> All right. Can you stay over there, please? >> What? >> I leave you. >> Okay. We're asking you to stay over there. >> You're going to get Josh, dude. Go out. Step back. >> Gregory accuses officers of hurting him and keeps reaching for his pants, raising suspicion he's hiding something. >> Take a step back. Break your feet apart. >> Cooperate. >> Gregory is being difficult for a reason. He's got something on him that will soon complicate things. >> Stop. >> Stop it. >> What are just cooperate? Stop resisting. >> Stop. >> Stop resisting. >> Stop. >> I'm not resisting. >> You keep trying to buck. Get away from us. Stop resisting. You are >> being extra. >> You're just trying to be extra. >> You being extra. >> No, you are. >> Oh, >> stop. Get off my dick. Stop. >> Stop trying to resist. >> Stop trying to resist. >> I'm trying to stand up. >> All right, take him to the ground. I'm done. Take him to the ground. >> Maintain his hand. He keeps reaching for his truck. >> Youard. >> He admits his real name. Officers notice he's wearing multiple pairs of pants, suggesting hidden contraband. >> My [ __ ] arm. >> Stop. >> Stop resisting. >> Stop resisting. >> Hey, man. What's your name? Man, >> it's Gregory. It's Gregory. >> Oh, stop grabbing my balls. >> Gregory, we got to check your pants. You keep reaching in there. We're just trying to search you good. All right. I can't do that cuz you got two separate pairs of pants on. >> Oh, I can't. This [ __ ] hurts. >> Okay. So, if you stop if you stop tensing up and pulling away from us, we can search you and get you back in the car. Okay. But you're making it damn difficult. >> This is ridiculous. >> Okay. Well, you're making it difficult. So, are you going to comply and stop pulling away? You're going to let us do what we need to do. >> Keep trying to reach in his pants for something. We're trying to figure out what it is. >> Just pull the long pants all the way off. >> Just pull them out. >> He's got the shorts on. He's good. >> You ready to start cooperating? We can stand you up. You don't have to lay there on the ground. I'm sure it's not comfortable. >> Okay. So, you don't need medical to look at you right now, >> right? That's fine then. Yeah, we'll bring you, >> sir. Just making sure they're safe. >> Police suspect he ran to try ditching what he was hiding. A shotgun shell is discovered serious for a convicted felon already out on bond. >> Then when we started to step to him, we went to detain him. Soon as he put his hand on him, he bolted his bolted. Yeah. Whatever he was reaching for, he might have dumped some place along the side or the front of >> probably the shotgun cartridge he's not supposed to be in possession of. He's out on bond right now. I think what he was trying to conceal was the shotgun shell he has, which I believe is a convicted felon. So, and he's out on bond right now. Aunt was saying she was scared that he's trying to leave before his hearing. So, >> an officer returns to Gregory's grandmother to continue getting the full story. >> Sorry about that earlier. Um, my partners were out with your grandson and then I guess he lied to them about his name and he fled on foot. Um, so he was taken into custody >> at his grandmother's home. Police confirm custody. She reports his angry, erratic behavior, suicidal thoughts, and talk about getting a gun. >> Um, I just I had questions for you that obviously I I got interrupted with. Do you mind if I come in? >> Thank you. I'm sorry about that. >> That's okay. >> Does he have any conditions of his bond? Like things he's not allowed to do while he's out on bond? Well, he can't leave the state, >> right? >> I don't I don't know if he have any conditions, >> right? Like not allowed to be in possession of firearms. >> Yeah, cuz he >> does it does it show that on the paperwork, though? >> Can you show me? So, >> so he's in jail. >> Um, well, right now he's at the hospital getting checked out and everything. >> Something is not right about it. >> Did he make any comments today that indicated that he wanted? He said, "Since I called the police on him, I'm never going to see him again because he might be floating in the Atlanta." You know, he always searching for my gun, but I don't leave it in this house because he's in my house all day. >> And I'm just trying to do an evaluation, too, right? Arresting people when they commit crimes when they are suffering from a mental crisis isn't going to do anything for them, right? Obviously, they're lacking the intent to actually commit a crime. The intent to commit the crime of stealing the firearm is not really to deprive somebody else of their property, but really more so to fulfill whatever suicidal ideations I may have. Right. So, I want to make sure that he's getting the help he needs. Um, I did locate a shotgun shell on him. So, that's why I'm trying to see where would that come from. Do you know >> got these here? He had a whole box. Usually when it comes to firearm related charges, part of the bond conditions would be no possession of firearms or ammunition. >> He's in possession of ammunition right now. So, we're trying to see is this something that we can request that the judge revokes his bond based off of his violation. We just have to see what his conditions are to be able to prove that. >> Charges giving a false name and resisting arrest without violence. Bond set at $1,000. If you think you're just helping a friend by stealing, you're really just helping yourself to handcuffs. Shady recruiters may promise quick cash, but Target's cameras always catch more than you think. If you like this video, please sign up for Law Zone to receive more. Look out for the next shoplifter who will react even more aggressively. >> What's up? Police respond to Target after a man and woman reportedly entered with empty bags, removed security tags from portable cameras, and concealed them. >> Hey, what's going you guys doing today? You doing all right? >> Take your hand out your pocket for me, bud. You got any weapons? Officers detain and frisk both suspects, activate body cams, and separate them for questioning. >> On you, anything, guys? You do me a favor, sir. You can stand up and come over here. I'm just going to make sure you don't have any weapons on you. Okay. >> Put your hands on the wall for me. >> Nothing inside the bag. >> Drugs or weapons or anything? May you stand up over here for me. Back down here. >> Put your hands on the wall. >> Okay. >> All right. There's two officers present here. We both have our body cameras on. Okay. I'm not going to touch you in an appropriate way. I'm going to use the back of my hand to brush your waistline. Okay. >> I know there's going [Music] >> somebody Well, hold on. Are we Can I talk to you outside for a second? Yeah, that's fine. That's fine. >> Discussion covers prior theft incidents and the $100 prosecution threshold. Both suspects are mirandized before further questioning. >> I just want to confirm um that they aren't person charges. >> So, um I'm about to go get the dollar amount is 100 or not. We prosecute. But all I'm verifying is from my recollection, they're repeat offenders where they stole from another target. >> Okay. before coming. So, I'm about to confirm with him now. Um, and if that's the case, we'll prosecute. Okay. >> Yeah. Yeah. But I think the dollar amount if they each the dollar amount that each took is 100, we'll prosecute and we'll regard it. So, >> okay. So, we're going to find out right now. >> When we talk about it, just say like if they confirm at the other store, just be like, "Hey, I already confirmed that at the other store." That way, I know I press charges. Or if it's a dollar amount over 100, just say what the amount is. If it's over 100, then I'll know that. >> That way, we're not. >> All right. So, I'm going to advise both of you of your Miranda rights. Okay? Cuz I'm before I ask you any questions. If I was taking you to jail, you'd be in handcuffs. Okay? Before I ask you any questions, because you have the right certain rights, and these are self-inccriminating questions, I want you to understand what those rights are. Okay? You both have the right to remain silent. Do you understand that? Yes, sir. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Okay. So, what am I doing here today? What's going on? >> So, basically, um, somebody was going to pay us some money to get >> to get some cameras. Okay. >> How many cameras were you supposed to take and what kind? What kind of cameras were they? >> Okay. >> The pair claim they were recruited about 3 weeks earlier by a woman named Kay who paid them to steal cameras. They reveal background details around 21 years old dating and working in wireless phones. >> Who is this? Somebody like somebody you know a friend. >> Well, we just met her maybe like 3 weeks ago. >> Okay. And she was looking for like those specific cameras. You guys live around here? >> Um I don't live around I live in. >> Okay. What are you doing all the way over here? >> Well, we work over here. So, we just we got off on break and >> we were going to go get lunch and stuff, but >> we don't. >> Okay. >> So, what are you guys doing? >> You guys are both young, right? Jobs. >> Jobs. >> What do you do for work? >> Um, right now we're doing um >> wireless with the phones. >> A government phone. >> Is it going okay or? >> Yeah, it's okay. >> What about you? Same thing. >> Yeah, we're together. You guys together dating? >> Yeah. >> Okay. How long you guys been dating each other? >> 8 months. 7 months. >> Okay. This the first time you done anything like this or have you done something like this before? >> Okay. >> Um, >> how old are you? >> I'm 21. >> And you are? >> Okay. You guys have IDs in your bags or on your purse? I know you have your wallet on you. You can grab that for me. >> I don't have my ID on me. >> Okay. >> Um, but I can give you my name, my um my mom and I need that. Okay. >> Like that. You guys drive here? >> Yes, sir. >> Whose car is it? Yours? >> Mine. >> Registered to you? >> Yeah. Well, it's registered to my dad. >> Yeah, it's the front. >> Okay. >> Um, where did you where did you guys say you were from originally? You're from Claremont? Yes, sir. >> So, you guys are dating, but you don't live together? >> No. >> No. >> Okay. And have you ever been involved in uh shoplifting at all before? >> No. Never? >> No. >> Never in a different store? Just not caught it? >> No. Never. Never. Um, uh, my ex, he got like he he was doing something like in a Walmart a couple years ago and like we both got in trouble. We tasted from the Walmart. >> Okay. >> But the charges got dropped, I believe. >> Okay. Can you do me a favor? Can you stand up and walk over here for me? >> Walk over here. Stand up for me, sir. >> Turn place your hands behind your back. >> Yes, sir. >> You're going to be placed under arrest. Don't fight or try to run. Officers formally arrest them for shoplifting. Despite pleas to pay or have family cover costs, the officer cites clear evidence and targets prosecution policy noting possible repeat offenses. >> I'm going to get hurt. Okay. >> What am I being arrested for? >> For the shoplifting here. Okay. >> Well, we didn't even walk away with this. We just returned it. >> Yeah, but if you try to conceal it >> No, no, we didn't. But we didn't. >> We're past the point of arguing about it. Okay. >> I don't want you to catch additional charges. >> I don't either, sir. Let me get these double lock so they don't lock up on you. Okay. >> Yeah, we'll we'll get >> Is there anything that we can do? >> We paid or something. if we maybe get our family to pay for whatever we have to pay for. Please. The problem is that I have a daughter, man. Please, sir. >> I understand. Okay. And I don't want you to think that this is you're intentional or has anything to do with you personally. >> The problem is is that I don't think that this is the first thing that you guys have been involved in. >> All right. There there's some evidence out there that shows that you guys have been involved in multiple ones. >> Well, there's only we we took one more thing from the store. >> Mhm. >> And that was it. >> What was it? >> A PSP. >> Okay. >> And somebody the same girl told us to come get it. >> What was that? >> That was like maybe a week ago. She literally paid us in cash for it. >> Okay, >> I can lead you to the >> But that's that's the problem, right? Is that you're it's it's an often occurrence. So, Target, from their perspective, their policy is why are we going to let these people that are stealing from us keep stealing from us and then leaving, >> you know what I mean? >> Pay for whatever for the We can pay for it, man. >> You can you can litigate it in court. You guys will have bonds. You're looking at misdemeanor charges right now. >> We're going to have a bond, though, because I have a we're out on bond already. >> You guys are both out on bond. >> I thought I asked you if you've been arrested. You said no. >> Not for this. Not for shoplift. They only for shoplift. >> You guys are both out of bond. >> You >> um Yeah. >> Do you have any that I know about in your bra area or underwear? Cuz they will find it at the jail. I'm not going to search you. But >> no, I don't have anything. >> Why would you guys be doing this out on bond? >> You guys know even a seconddegree misdemeanor will revoke your bond on your first charges. And you're not dumb. So why would you be doing this? Is >> there anything that we can do? >> See if we can pay for what this >> Unfortunately not. Okay. You guys are both under arrest for right now. All right. I'm going to try to see as far as charges to make sure you don't get charged with anything additional you're not supposed to and uh I'll I'll let you make any phone calls you need to make. But yeah, you guys are under arrest. Okay. >> Did that mean that >> we're not going to get out? >> This stuff you can't take. What is this? >> This candy. >> What kind of candy is it? >> Baby bottle pop. >> Okay, man. So, anyways, like I was saying, because of the situation that you're in, you know, you guys are going to go to jail for these charges. Okay. Um, like I said, I'll help you try to arrange everything you can. I don't want you to think it's personal and I don't want to argue with it because I don't want to give you some sense of false hope that you're being let go today. You will have a bond. Doesn't look like you're out. Are never mind. You're still out on >> reported theft value 509 bions. A misdemeanor amount, but their bond status complicates possible release >> a bond >> and then Yeah, you guys. So, you guys most likely will not have bonds for your first one until you go to first appearance. Then they'll set a bond based on the the previous bond. They'll look at the severity of the charges you're looking at. They cut you for >> misdemeanor charges. What were the What was the amount? >> Uh individually they're uh Yeah, they're both they're all misdemeanor. >> Total combined was $599.97. >> Yeah. So, he's still a misdemeanor. Luckily for you. >> All right. So, the judge might take that into consideration when you go to first appearance about your first bond, >> but >> Oh, I'm so sorry, man. >> But that's where we're at right now. You know what I mean? >> 104, man. 10:15 on a whiskey mic in a hotel show. >> Sorry. the person. >> There's nothing that we can do with we can't pay for everything like with Target like we'll pay we'll figure >> in a hotel or correction hotel. I >> understand that Target wants to happen if they hold that evidence for a while. They don't let nobody purchase it. >> Is there any way we can like go to court like maybe like do a court appearance or something for it like without going to jail? >> They may have done that for you today if y'all didn't have y'all weren't on bond. >> Yeah, that's different. >> Yeah. >> We could have gave you like a notice to appear or something like that, but because you're out on bond, it's we have to I mean, my bond is out for like two years. I've been on bond almost two years. >> It still doesn't matter. Yeah, just the bond status. >> Just had his ID. Let me find it for you. I'm sorry. >> I don't even know. >> You're asking like what the process would be. >> Like how long would I have to take care of? >> Well, depending on when we get in, there's two first appearances during the day. one at 8 a.m. and one at 2 p.m. So depending when you get in jail, you might make the 2 p.m. Probably not if I'm doing >> the officer explains next steps, bond hearings, property handling, and contraband checks. Personal belongings are prepared for jail intake. >> Honest with you, uh you'll see the jail first thing tomorrow or see the judge first thing tomorrow morning. >> We're not going to have preset bonds. >> You will have preset bonds for our charges, but they'll revoke your bond based on the previous charges. >> No matter what. >> No matter what. It's like instinct like that. If you're out on bond, right, there's bond stipulations like don't occur any new or law violations. That's one >> new law violations. So, the judge will have to >> reset your bonds based on if he sees fit to give you a bond um based on the violation. >> Facebook real quick. >> How's it work with your car? Is it going to get towed or can they keep it here? >> Yeah. Okay. Your car. Yeah. So if we we detect detect there's nothing in here, we'll go to your vehicle before we leave. We'll lock your stuff inside of your vehicle besides your wallet, stuff like that. >> I don't have my wallet. >> Yeah. But large bags like this, this is the jail kind of frowns upon you guys taking that into the jail. Okay. So we'll swing by your car and drop it in there and lock it up. Now before I search your bags, is there anything inside the bag that I need to know about? This is the part where I have discretion to charge you or not to charge you. Okay. >> Only thing I might have in my bag is aluminum foil. No drugs. >> Okay. Just aluminum foil. [Music] >> All right. Cool. >> Can I grab my phone? That's my phone. >> That's your phone right here. Yep. I will grab that phone. >> Those are my keys right there. >> Yep. We're going to get the keys here. The other officer is going to transport him. Okay. And then we'll make sure your property goes in your car. Okay. So, the keys will be >> taking all the property. >> Well, we're going to search it outside because possible 95. >> Um, >> as far as the property, who are we leaving this with so they can get back in the car? Like the large bag and stuff. We'll take the person that phone >> the other recruit. >> Okay. >> So, we'll leave this with them. >> Yes. >> Yeah. >> I have your and your keys are going to come up to the jail later. Okay. >> Go ahead. Lead the way. Sorry. I don't know where I'm going. >> All right. You're going to get inside the car. >> Okay, for sure. Nothing in your bra area, underwear area. We're not going to recover it, but just let me know now. That way I can tell the jail staff to get it. >> No, I don't have anything. >> Okay, have a seat for me. Okay. >> What's that? >> Um, my bag and my my truck. Like it'll like they're not going to tow it for >> No, they just told us that. Yeah, they're not going to >> Yeah, they're going to leave it there. So, you'll be able to come pick up. >> Would you be able to tell the other officer that they could put them like my bags in the trunk? >> Yeah. Yeah. I'm going to search it first and then we'll we'll put in the top. >> Okay. >> Watch your feet. >> I'll I'll come back in with that property. >> Question. >> How long have you been with your boyfriend? What's his name? >> Christopher. >> Christopher. >> I've been with him for about like seven months or eight months. >> Okay. Before you guys met, were you identical narcotics? >> Additional questioning reveals suspect information about the alleged recruiter, K, her transient motel locations. Suspects warned about jail contraband and processing continues. >> What kind of happened with the relationship? Hi. Um, I think I don't know if he was explaining it prior to me, but I wasn't doing anything like Do you know how you're addicted to it? [Music] >> Yeah. >> Right behind that >> gold SUV. >> There's a white Ford SUV. behind that. >> What do you know about this lady that >> um I'm pretty sure that's not her real name. Like I know like you know people use like a like fake name, but like from what I know her as her name is K. Um >> she's like an older black woman. Um she's usually always on OBT like at a motel some like at some type of motel. Um she's never at the same spot. Um, >> okay. >> What' you ask for? >> All right, man. Stand up. >> All right, man. Wish you the best, man. Hope things get better for you. >> This way. >> You got anything on you? It's going to stick us. Poke us. Place this door. Hold this for a sec. All right. I'm going to ask I ask everyone this, but do you have anything on you that you're going to bring to the jail? Cuz if you that in fine, cuz if you do, >> it's an additional charge since contraband. Okay. >> Primary charge shoplifting, retail theft, misdemeanor level, since the total value was about 597 tons under the felony threshold. Putting personal desires above your children's safety has lasting consequences. Good parenting means responsibility, not excuses. But this is still not the worst case. Just wait until you see this next one. >> So, are you worried? Is anything out of norm to you that you see? >> On March 30th, 2024, police rushed to a parking lot after receiving reports of a young boy found crying alone calling for his mother. When officers arrived, they quickly located the child's mother to find out what had happened. >> Hi. Is this your kid? >> Yeah, I had to run to use the bathroom. >> Okay. But he looked like he's not okay. Are you okay, buddy? >> He's been here a while. He has not been. You can check the time. I literally I literally ran in there and ran out. >> Your kid? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> I really had to use the bathroom. So, he was sleeping and I just ran in there >> to use the bathroom and came out. I just really had to go to the bathroom. >> Heather tried to justify leaving Carter alone by saying she had urgent kidney issues and needed to use the restroom. Officers, however, weren't convinced and pressed further to determine exactly what had happened. >> And you can look it up on my hospital record that I didn't get out of the hospital having surgery. Do >> you have your ID? >> I don't have anything. >> I'm giving my social if you like my social. >> You don't have your ID on you at all? >> No. My 13-year-old was in the bathroom with me >> and she's the one there. I ran here. I was worried about him involved. >> What's your first name? >> Heather. >> My car and registration. Everything's valid. I don't have a Nothing's wrong. >> Witnesses told police Carter had been alone in the car for at least 13 minutes, maybe longer. As officers assessed the situation, Heather's older daughter, 13-year-old Audriana, walked up to the scene. So when you pulled up and you parked like he was in the middle of the road. Did you go up to him and >> Well, yeah. We stopped there. They're like, "What's going on?" You just kept saying, "I want my mommy. Where's my mommy? I want my mommy." >> She just got >> like you guys like literally you guys pulled up and walked >> right back. >> Do you have your ID? >> Yeah. >> So you said you called run away or you waited? >> We waited well basically 2 minutes. We were talking to him >> and then the guy over there saw that as well. We have to walk over to them at the same time. >> They got him a drink and then >> I'm taking her. >> Huh? >> I'm taking her. >> Okay. >> So, from the time that you seen him to the time that you called 911 cuz how long time went by? >> It was within 10 minutes. >> Not even that. No, it was probably like 3 minutes because that those couple saw him as well. Like they called 911. >> Wait, what do you think about >> like from the time that we saw him guys? >> It was maybe like 3 minutes. >> 4 minutes. Okay. >> And then the time that we responded in >> about 10 minutes. And rather than focusing on Carter's condition, Heather shifted attention to herself once paramedics arrived, acting more concerned about her own situation than her son's welfare. >> For sure. That's kind of cool. >> Hey, so what? So, were you in the car with your brother? >> I was going in. >> Okay. Where was your mom at? >> So, you guys both went into the bathroom? >> Yeah. I don't like going by myself and outside places like that, so I asked her to come with me. >> Okay. How long ago did you guys go to the bathroom? Not too long. >> And you left your little brother by himself in the car? >> Um, I thought it would be fine since he's sleeping. >> You can't leave the car unattended with him in there. It's hot. >> Where do you guys live? >> I'm not really living with my mom, but I was just here hanging out with her for the weekend. >> Okay. You live with your dad? >> Yes. >> And then your brother does stay with your brother stays with you, too. And your dad's? >> No, he stays with [Music] me. I have to go to birth. >> No, no, that's Adrian's birthday. Sorry. Um, I'm nervous. I'm sorry. >> Heather tried to justify leaving Carter by saying her kidney problems forced her into an emergency restroom trip, but officers weren't convinced and pressed her to explain what really happened. >> We just got out of the car. I guess they were concerned that just like ran in and ran out. >> Okay. >> So, are you worried? Is there anything out of normal to you that you see? >> I'm going through a really bad divorce and I know I feel really bad cuz now I'm thinking about it. >> What's your name? >> I'm so sorry. >> Mom, what's your name? >> Heather. >> What's mommy's name? What's your name, buddy? >> Can I see your finger, please? We're gonna finger. All right. >> Pretty cool light, right? There you go. Pretty cool, right? >> Oo, look. I got a light on it. >> Just turn the door. Obviously, you know, I didn't leave him in the car by him. So, >> I know. I didn't I literally in and out and he was sleeping and I didn't. So, I just >> The officer's main concern shifted from the shoplifting report to the children's safety. Given Heather's unstable behavior, they urged her to contact a relative or her ex-husband so the kids could be placed in safe care. >> Time was 15 minutes or more that you were in that store, then you're going to jail. >> I've never been in jail. >> Okay. As of right now, we have information, but nothing's secure right now. >> So, we have to do a full >> We have him come here just in case he doesn't arrest you. I know that I was in there. I was less than 15 minutes, but >> Listen, even if I don't arrest you, you still you basically look like you you need a break. >> Let's put the phone over. Yeah, call him up. >> And how long do you think you spent the phone? >> Like 5 minutes. >> 5 minutes. >> Literally 5 minutes. >> Okay. And you left the car? >> It was running? >> The car was running? >> Yes. >> Were the keys inside? >> No. No, I don't I don't remember now. I don't remember. >> Okay. But the kid was in there. The windows were up. >> No, the windows were down. >> The windows were down. Yeah. >> But you still left the child unattended. I did >> in this weather, >> right? >> Stand over here. Stand over here. >> Oh, yeah. >> The security footage revealed that Heather hadn't been rushing to the restroom as she claimed she had been shopping the entire time while her young son sat unattended in the car. Right now you're being placed under not only for child neglect but for shoplifting. >> I didn't shoplift anything. >> Yes, you did. All points of sale with bastard. >> I didn't mean to. >> You let that dog let your daughter inside because you were going to come get your car. Come on. >> No, I wasn't. Can you call my mom and tell her they'll tell me out right away? >> Put your hands if you were pranking. Come on. >> It'll be easier. >> I can't. I can't. I can't. I can't. Stop. Stop. Stop. Please. I'm not. Please. I'll be resist. Stop. Cuz it will hurt. >> Do not resist. I can't breathe. Okay, listen. >> You're talking, right? You're breathing. You're talking. Just focus on that. You're >> call my mom now. I'm >> breathing. Can you take my jacket? >> I will. >> No, I won't take it off. >> Don't take it off. >> You got to take order. You got to take all >> I don't have anything. I don't have anything wrong on me. >> Put your hands on your feet. That way. >> Listen. You want these to be comfortable? You want them to hurt? >> I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I've never done this before. >> Look at me. Look at me. Focus. [ __ ] is out. >> Put your hands like this backwards. That's all. >> That's all. Like this. >> Am I is DCF going to take my kids in? >> You know what I'm saying? After that, I can get him back as soon as I get out. >> And then when I get out, I can get >> He's not law enforcement. Look at me. >> I'm trying to explain it to you. Okay. >> I did not need this job with anything either, but I didn't mean to. I just >> Okay. I didn't mean to. I didn't know. I didn't know. I didn't know. >> But I didn't know. I didn't know. This meant Carter had been left in the car far longer than Heather admitted. And instead of a quick errand, she and her daughter were actively shoplifting during that entire time. >> I swear I'm scared. What are you going to do? >> I don't know. >> I don't want to go to jail. I've never been to jail. >> I've never been to jail. I'm scared. Listen, if you would be if you would have been honest with me 100% from the beginning. >> I did. I was. >> And they brought him out. So they >> look at me. No, we didn't do that. So you got to get out of the rescue. I think I got other balls. >> You're making it worse for your children right now. You got to get yourself together. >> Do you want her to have Do you want him to have your phone? >> He can have everything. I don't care. >> No, I'm saying like so you won't take this to the jail. Actually, I would Yeah. I want to take it with me just in case. Okay. >> I will keep it, too. >> Okay. >> Uh, have a seat. Step. >> Can you put my jacket back on? >> This is the only thing. >> Exactly. Heather seemed more concerned about facing consequences than about her children's safety. Once the officers confirmed Carter and Adriana were fine, custody was handed over to their father, ensuring the kids were in safe hands. >> Okay. Give it a second. Can I get a high five? >> One second. What's your name? >> Sorry. >> I know. Give it a second, buddy. Okay. >> Carter, right? >> You're Carter. >> You a big boy. >> No. Carter, look at me. Look at me. We're going to be okay. Okay. I'll make sure you're all right. I don't I don't >> mean >> Yeah. >> I'm going to make sure you're okay. >> You're having any trouble? Okay. We're not in any trouble. But remember when I asked you what you guys were doing here and you guys said that you guys were going to the bathroom? >> Yes. >> Now I know that's not the truth. >> My mom suggested I should also get sleep. >> Okay. But what was like what were you guys trying to get? >> My mom went to work. She was distracted. So she wanted to get something for herself with a jacket. Distract. >> She walked out the door. >> Audriana's statement added another layer of uncertainty. It wasn't clear whether she was genuinely convinced her mother intended to pay or if she was just trying to shield Heather from getting into more trouble. >> Camera. Yeah. You see it? >> It's my radio. Oh, don't turn up too loud. Let's go. It's going to go. You just turned the volume up, >> guys. >> There it goes. Volume's up. >> Heather, look at me, please. Where's the hotel? >> She keeps telling him where it is. >> Hotel, >> can you please loosen these? I keep hitting my back on him and he's really tired. >> Yeah, we're checking right now. >> Is that my mom? >> Sorry. >> Roll up that rear window. I shouldn't just mommy. >> They rolled up the window. >> Hey, mommy. >> This is her mom. >> Oh, her mom. >> Yeah. >> Hey, mommy. >> One second. >> Mommy, >> can you grab him? >> Go with your sister. Ah, go with your sister. >> Exactly. Heather's reckless choices not only endangered her children, but also broke the law. She was charged with shoplifting and child neglect, and hopefully the incident served as a wake-up call for her to finally put her kids first. Never leave children unattended in a vehicle. Their safety must always come first. Selfish actions and poor choices can cost you your freedom and your family's trust. What an unyielding shoplifter. The next shoplifter will react much more violently. So keep an eye out. >> They were displayed. >> This say displays our samples. I didn't I didn't even keep it. I >> on death to 2024. Police responded to reports of a woman shoplifting from multiple stores. She's spotted outside Target and detained for suspected theft at Kohl's earlier that day. >> What? >> Real quick, so right now you are being detained for suspicion of retail theft over at the Kohl's earlier today. Just take a deep breath. >> Brenda, do you have anything on your person that has your name? >> No. >> So, we can confirm that? >> No. I just want to go use the bathroom. The woman identifying herself as Brenda repeatedly denies wrongdoing, claims she has no ID, and asks to use the bathroom and call her sister. >> No. Can I just go right there? >> Nope. >> Nope. All right. Brenda, do you have a middle initial, ma'am? >> No. >> Okay. What's your birthday? >> Did you do you have a driver's license? >> No, I don't. >> Okay. Where? Okay. I didn't take any makeup from that store. I want to see that right now. No. And then I want to go. I didn't take any makeup from that store. I swear I didn't. >> Here's the deal. >> Show me the makeup. >> Hold on. >> I didn't. >> I didn't take any of >> Can you let my partner explain to you? >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> I want you to be totally honest. Is all the information that you've given me correct? >> Yes. >> Okay. Because I'm going to tell you >> if any of the information that you've given me, because right now I do have probable cause for your arrest. If any of that information that you me is false, that is going to be an additional charge for obstructing identification. >> No, that's me. And can I go home now? >> Not yet. >> I didn't take any makeup. I didn't take any makeup. >> I didn't. >> Like I said, my partner has video. >> I want to see the makeup I took. >> I didn't take anything. I used the sample. >> I need you I need you to >> No, but I'm I'm okay. I'm trying to calm down a little bit. >> I'm not leaving. I'm sorry. I'm white as a doctor. >> You're not free to leave. Like we >> You're not being mean to me. I'm not being mean to you. I didn't take makeup though. I didn't. That's not I didn't I I some a sample thing I used, but I didn't take any makeup. >> Why have you on video putting it in your pockets? >> No, that was that's a sample. >> Exact same clothes that you're wearing. >> It was a sample thing. I don't even >> Are you willing to show me? >> I don't have it anymore. >> Okay. >> I don't have the thing. It was like a little sample of a like a um a liner and I don't have it anymore. >> She admits to handling some items but says she threw them away because they weren't her color. Officers clarify they were full products, not samples. >> Okay. >> Except I didn't even lie. I don't have that. >> So, what was taken was two things of like makeup powder with, you know, with the little mirrors and the powder that you can put on your face and then a setter. Okay. >> I don't have that anymore. I don't I don't even have it. >> Don't have it anymore. Okay. Where would it be? >> It was just some sample stuff and I didn't like it. I don't know. I just kind of threw it in. It might be right over there in the garbage. I didn't keep it. So, >> okay. >> I didn't And it was a sample. I didn't think that was wrong. It wasn't. It wasn't like I didn't take You understand why I didn't know that? It doesn't say. >> They were on the display and it didn't say anything on Hold on. I'm sorry. >> I'm so sorry. Could you please 10 nine? >> I didn't know the samples were wrong and I threw them out. I did. They weren't even my color. You know, you're just goofing around. I didn't mean anything. I took two samples. >> Brenda, I'm going to ask you again. Do you have anything with an ID? >> I don't have anything. >> You have anything with your name on it? >> No. All right. >> My face is my face. >> Well, that's that's okay. You don't have >> 2105. Okay. >> You just told me you don't have a phone. >> No, I said it's my friend's phone. I don't have a phone. So, same thing. Same thing. You're all over the place here. >> Same thing. I'm just saying you left the tag on. >> No, I didn't leave the tag on. It's not It's just something I threw on. Okay. >> Okay. Okay. >> What are you looking for? So, according to Kohl's, she's got a Walmart cart somewhere where she was dumping stuff by a bush. She's wearing these. >> Police suspect she gave a false name note. She has no form of ID and confirm calls provided an itemized list of stolen items valued at $141. >> Exact same clothes that she was wearing at the time of the theft. I think that she's given me a phony baloney name. >> Okay. >> Um, she claims she has nothing with her ID. >> Okay. >> I got a couple other things I'm going to try to ask her. Sure. Either way, she's going to be coming with me cuz I have no way to ID her. So, I'm going to double check with Cole's as far as what she left in the bags and whatnot. But what she took today, we have her on video. You can see her clearly on the display putting stuff in her pocket. She walked out of the store. >> Did Cole's give you a itemized list of those items from the earlier theft? >> They did. >> Okay, very good. >> Am I going to Can I use the bathroom at least? >> As of right now, no. >> Did you just come from where' you say Kohl's? Genuinely, I really don't. >> Thank you. I see. >> Well, I mean, if I call a friend, I don't know who I was going to call, but I was going to call somebody, right? >> Okay, that's it. >> Okay. I'm not leaving side so you don't have to act like >> Well, we asked you to stay there and you haven't. So, >> because I'm nervous. I don't see why I have to do what you say. >> Because I'm a police officer. That's >> Can't they show Can't they They see me with the scar. >> Very good. >> Very good. >> All right. >> So, what happens now? Let's just be honest. I'm very nervous. I peed on myself. >> Okay. >> I did. >> So, at this moment in time, if you have nothing that can prove to me who you are, you are going to be placed under arrest at this time. Do you have anything that can show me who you are? Don't go reaching for nothing, please. So, I'm going to >> You are under arrest at this time for the crime of retail theft. We're going to go over right here to this black F-150. Miss Thomas, please be mindful of your step. >> I won't let you. >> You're going to have to really help me. >> Okay, I got you. I'm not going to let you fall. >> I'm just going to take your hat off. >> No, don't. >> I have to take it off. It's departmental policy. >> I I don't know. No, please don't. I usually I have a religious beanie that's in my purse. >> It's going to go right back on. I have to take it off real quick and then >> Oh god, don't do this to me. Please let me go home. >> Nope. We're past that point now. >> Okay, >> I want it back on now. >> I'm Brenda, >> please. >> I'm going to put it back on. I said I had to take it off for a second and put it right back. >> Can I have my religious beanie? >> Your beanie is still wearing. >> No, it stays on. >> She becomes emotional, admits to urinating on herself, and is arrested for retail theft and obstruction. Officers remove her head, covering briefly per policy before transport. Small thefts can still lead to arrest when backed by clear evidence. Lying about your identity only adds more charges to your case. >> Hey, you. You were here last week and I turned around and I said, "Yeah, yes, I was." >> Yeah. >> Police detain a woman suspected of stealing plants from Ace Hardware. She has read her Miranda rights while officers prepare to review store surveillance footage. Give me one second. I'm going to talk to him and then I will be back with you. Okay. >> Okay. Bye. >> Okay. We can just put this down. >> 1275 Oak Street. >> Is that I'll talk to you in the car real quick. >> 1275 12 Oak Street in the car. >> Yeah, if you could. >> Yeah, >> I'm very confused. >> I'll talk to you. >> I'd rather not have it closed if that's fine so that I can get >> I just don't want anybody else listening to their business. So, okay. >> I'm going to read your Miranda rights. Have you had your Miranda rightites read to you before? >> Wait, so now I'm going to jail? >> I'm not saying that by any means. Do you have any? >> The woman admits visiting the store multiple times for plants claiming an employee once told her she could remove tags from larger plants and bring them inside. She insists any unpaid items were accidental. >> Have you been here previously? I >> I I've been here many times. Yes. I've come here for plants. >> Sure. >> Love some plants every time. You know, grab right in here and everything. I've been here multiple times where the ladies were cuz they usually get a tray, you know, usually get like five, six plus plants. >> And she said, you know, if you have multiple, you can take the tag off or if they're bigger than like um a pint or quartz, you can take the label off and bring it in. I said, "Thank you so much. Greatly appreciate it." um >> in time before last. I did have a >> I did look through their um morning jasmine and everything. I >> did remove the tag and everything >> like a owner or not, sorry, not an owner employee said that I could previously do. I put them out. I just put them in front of my car and everything. I went inside. I was talking to the older lady with glasses that is currently still working in there and has checked me out multiple times before and everything. I thought I paid for everything. Um, he said that I had tickets and or tags and they were in the candy and everything and I end up not paying for those. Said I apologize. That was not my intention. I've been here multiple times and going not take steal in any way and then coming back try to steal or take again. I said, you know, I apologize. I'm more than happy to pay for anything. He goes, "Nope, we're calling the cops. We're going to jail." And I said, "I I don't feel like that is necessary, but I >> The officer explains the store's claim that she has been removing tags from cheaper items, paying for them, and taking more expensive plants. The woman admits removing tags that day citing rain and prior instructions. >> I'm not saying you're going to a jail bag any even if even if it rises that level I can give you a notice to appear if you're cooperative. I just want just make sure cuz he's saying that what you're doing is you're taking the tags >> off cheaper items, going and paying for those and then taking the more expensive items is the way he's explained it to me. I'm going to go watch the video. Okay. And and I did remove tags again today because it was raining and everything and they were bigger ones. And again, I was told from previous times if it is a bigger one, I can put it out in front of my car and bring the tags in and everything. And I was looking at the big ones versus the little ones and everything. I assumed I took off um tags and everything of the appropriate ones and everything. I I brought him inside. >> So then when he came out and he was like, "Hey, you you were here last week." And I turned around and I said, "Yeah, yes, I was." Yeah. >> Not hiding here to lie, cheat, steal anything. You know, if there were ones that I did not >> Do you got your ID on you? >> Yes. >> All right. Thank you. Want to see you. Thank you. I'm going to run in, watch the video if you just want to hang out with her real quick. Yep. >> And I'm going to keep your legs in so I can just shut the door for now. >> Victoria is keep the door open if that's >> right. But I got to go in my car real quick. So, I just need you to keep your legs in. I'll come back. Okay. Then can I stand outside the car? >> No, cuz right now you are detained for this until we can watch video and figure it out. Okay. As I said, you've been awesome and cooperative. So, >> okay. >> Yeah. Not saying you're going to be stuck in here by any means. I just have >> 12297. I'm going to run her real quick, too, and just see if she's got any priors for this. >> Sure, that works. pretty good. >> So, basically what she's doing the last time she took she got a tray of flowers. >> She goes in and she um took the tags off a couple plants >> and um she paid for the tray and then hid the the tags in a barrel below the cash register. So, I'm good there for store staff recount a prior incident where she hid tags under a register to avoid paying full price. This time she paid for cheaper plants while taking costlier ones. >> Sure. Today she took the tags off two plants and put them underneath the plants. And then she basically paid for the right amount of plants, but she paid for the cheaper >> of the two. She basically swip switch. >> Oh, they're 50% off. >> I know. >> She has a warmer. >> Oh, she does. >> County. Oh, okay. Oh, perfect. I appreciate that. >> Um, thank you. >> Officers discover she has an outstanding DUI warrant, possibly due to a missed court date after moving. >> Okay. Thank you. So, you've got a warrant. I don't know if you knew that. >> I have a warrant? >> Yeah. For DUI. >> Well, I did I did all my stuff for that. >> So, sometimes what can happen is like um mi miss a pay. Do you did you move or anything >> from Canton? >> Okay. To here. Yes. >> Okay. >> Um I sent I thought >> Yeah. Something must have got missed or missed a court date or something. >> Um let me finish with this real quick. Okay. So on the 25th you came in and I watched the video. All right. And they've actually put out videos of this incident asking for the public's help and identifying you. Um, you came in, you bought a tray of flowers, you took the tags off two some plants out here, you took them in, and you hid them in the barrel. I'm watching you on video do that. >> Surveillance shows her committing plant switch thefts on two separate occasions. Because she is cooperative, officers opt for a misdemeanor charge instead of a felony. >> Okay. So, you've been cooperative with me today. I'm probably not going to charge you with the felony. I'm going to charge you with the mis because this has happened twice now. All right. Um, today you paid for you took the tags off, hit them underneath a plant. I watched you on video do it. And then you paid for the cheaper of the two plants and loaded up the more expensive ones. Okay. I'm only going to charge you with a misdemeanor today. Although it technically happened on two occasion. I could charge you with a felony. You're already in enough trouble. I don't want to do that. Okay. Is that what happened? Pretty much accurately. >> Okay. All right. Well, thank you for being honest. And because you were honest, I'm only going to charge you with the misdemeanor. All right. But I got I was going to give you an NTA, but you got the warrant, so I have to send you for the warrant. So, I'm going to have to send you for this, but I'll do the misdemeanor. I'll do it under. Okay. >> So, when you see >> she is told she must be booked for the DUI warrant, but officers agree to let her arrange for someone to pick up her Tesla to avoid towing. The stolen plants will be swapped for the correct ones. >> Like going booking for the for the warrant. Yes. You have to see a judge warrant for today for >> No, for the warrant for the DUI warrant. >> Correct. But I I have to go in front of a judge today and all that. And then >> it might be early enough where you still get in front of a judge today. >> Can I Can I get my purse and stuff? >> Yeah, we'll get yours. We'll get your impound. No, we'll I'll talk with them and make sure we can leave this since you were cooperative versus Can you have somebody come pick it up? >> I was going to say, can I call someone? Go ahead. >> Absolutely. >> Yeah. In fact, I would do that right now. See if you can get them to come. >> Victoria, yeah, we're definitely willing to work with you. Okay. So, we don't want to do that to your car and whatnot, but the warrant, we can't just bypass that. >> So, we'll totally I >> And we'll have to switch out the plants and get the correct ones in your car versus the two that you Can I can I open the car and >> uh you're being cooperative with us. Just don't go to the driver's side. Just stay on the passenger side. Okay. Come on. >> Again, if you truly don't maybe understand. >> Well, actually, hang tight. I'm going to have him come out and show me which plants you're supposed to have and we'll switch them >> up with him here. So, yeah. Okay. >> But yeah, if you truly maybe are not sure you did everything you're supposed to do with the DUI stuff, >> um explain that. You know what I mean? But unfortunately either whether it's today or another time you get pulled over or something like we're just you're >> Is that your only prior is >> Yeah. >> And you've never been in any other trouble? Okay. >> Okay. Yeah. >> All right. >> No big deal. >> Yeah. He posted it all over Facebook, too. >> The video of last incident. So, had you not seen that yet? >> The store bans her from the property. She confirms these were the only two theft attempts. >> No. Okay. All right. So, they were looking for you when you came in today. though, just so you know. Is that the only two times you've done this? Cuz they're going through video now. So, okay. >> All right. If you want to hop out and switch the plants out. These were the two that you were supposed to have. Okay. >> Did you get a hold of him? >> Um, I did get a hold of him. Did he say anything about like >> Well, he I'll let you talk to him about that if you want to get out. And uh uh he said you are going to be banned from the property. Okay. I'll let my wallet. >> Yeah, go ahead. Just do it from the passenger side here for me. Thank you. >> You all good with me? >> Um, do you want to just tell her she's banned? I told her, but >> you're banned. >> Understandable. Do Can I have someone come and get the car? It will be a little bit for afterwards or is there >> how how long are you talking? >> Um I mean he said it might be like 2 hours. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. I asked Oh, I asked him for I asked him for a little leeway to not tow your car for a little bit. So, um and he sounds like he's not going to just have him as quick as possible try to get it out of here because the more he thinks about it, he's pretty upset right now. He might, you know. So, >> so as silly as it sounds cuz Yeah. Yeah, I don't I don't know this process. I'm so I'm going to count. >> You'll go out to the county jail. >> Officers explain she might see a judge the same day or next day depending on court timing. They tried to expedite the process due to her cooperation. >> You'll get booked in and then for warrants now you got to see a judge. >> And so then as silly as it sounds, is that like they start seeing people on three? >> Uh it's up to the it's up to the county and like >> Yeah, it's up to the county. Um, this whole process is new to all of us. So, it's up to the judge and the county like when you get to see like I not to the county, it's up to the judge. So, is it if you get out there early enough, which you might still you it's possible you could see one today and then get released, but it's possible it could be tomorrow, too. >> Okay. >> Okay, >> understandable. >> Yeah, we'll try to get you out there as soon as possible and hopefully >> Thank you. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> All right. You've been cooperative with us, so >> Nope. That looks good. >> Does she have somebody for the car or >> Yes, but it's going to be a couple hours. And then I told him her to talk to him cuz he didn't give me like a straight up answer. >> He's just like like kind of looked at me like he wants to to tell it so bad he's mad at her, which I get. >> Um and then he gave her a big lecture and said he would basically I think he's going to let it stay. He's like I want to stick it to you so bad. But okay, that two hours would be fine. So I'm going to show >> when the wagon gets here. I'm going to go back up there one more time and look >> look at that video a little bit more just to I wrote the times down, but I don't think anybody will make an issue of it that I did it that way to keep it a misdemeanor deal, please. >> I don't think so. >> Yeah, I just know technically on the second one it's supposed to be a felony, I think. But I I don't want to charge her with that since she was cooperative. Sorry, Treble. I was going to >> you can say sorry to me. Leave a few perfectly quiet day. >> She had a warrant. Nothing. >> Let's see. Chocolate being cooperative. I don't know. Go get her information. I don't notice up here. Call it a day. >> If if it wasn't the warrant out of your pockets except for money and put it in this bag for you. She was being very cooperative though and somehow you found a way. >> She is arrested for the outstanding DUI warrant and misdemeanor theft. The video ends by asking viewers what punishment she should receive. Stealing, even if you think it's small or justified, will still get you caught when there's video proof. Cooperating with police might reduce charges, but prior warrants can still land you in jail. >> Yes. >> This your daughter? Yes. Unfortunately, >> this case takes us down to Florida on March 29th, 2024 when the Live Oak Police Department responded to a shoplifting in progress at Walmart. A woman was using her baby stroller to conceal stolen items, but she wasn't acting alone. Her accomplice was just 14 years old. >> No ID. >> Okay. >> Neither neither card. She has she has something on her but it's not a that's okay. So the total you have um let me give you a grand total. I got two receipts 14870 combined. Um the stuff on the left she said this is her sister. Don't know. There's no ID and she doesn't want to talk. And then this one here, she gave me the false information first, her name, but since told me the truth, her name is Madison. >> And that stuff she concealed. So all together they concealed around the baby in the stroller and pushed it out the GM door. >> Nice. >> How old are you? >> 14. Gotcha. You ever been to jail for? >> Okay. You might be going today. Who do you know that come pick up your child? >> Start making. >> When the officer arrived, the loss prevention manager explained the situation in full, adding that the shoplifter had given a fake name. She was later identified as Madison Roboa and shortly afterward she was read her rights. >> You are under arrest now for retail theft and also contributing to the delinquency of a minor. But you worked in um conjunction and allowed a minor who was in your custody to commit a crime. That in itself is a crime. So, you're going to have two charges. This is also going to be forward to the Department of Children and Family since you had a a toddler with you. Okay. So, Department of Children toddler >> That looks like a toddler to me. >> Okay. Well, you can argue with me all you want. I'm telling you what what you're charged with. You're going to be booked into county jail and DCS is going to be notified um for your basically poor parenting today. >> How many charges are you being charged against? Is it two? >> What's your case number? >> What are the charges again? contributing to the delinquency of a minor and retail hub delinquency of a minor and retail. >> The officer didn't mince words, explaining to Madison exactly what the consequences of her actions would be. What made matters worse was that she had a minor in her care while committing the theft. All of this was relayed to her mother over the phone. Let's [Music] go. >> Bad move today. Bad bad move. >> Where's your car at? >> Oh, got to find it now. Let's go. It's a um >> Ma'am, I'm not looking for your car. >> Madison needed to retrieve diapers and supplies for her baby from her car, and the officers assisted her with the request. She appeared completely disoriented, struggling even to find where her car was parked. >> Listen to me very carefully and very carefully. Okay. Have you ever been in trouble with the law? >> Um, it was >> Okay. What happened? Just curious. >> Um, well, it wasn't like this. So, this is probably at my house. >> Okay. Were you Did you get arrested or anything like that? >> Oh, >> okay. All right. Well, listen. Um, when you steal from a business, it's retail theft. You obviously knew what you were doing was wrong. Okay. Um, you can go to jail for that because of Walmart's policy. Their policy is to not prosecute juveniles. Um, cuz we were all young and dumb ones. We've all made mistakes. We've all done stupid stuff. All right? So, you're not going to be charged criminally today. All right. Um, what I will tell you is hanging out with people like that is going to your life up. And and >> yeah, I get it. I understand. And and maybe she's a good person at heart. So I'm I'm not I'm not saying that she's a bad criminal person, but from my perspective, she's rolling around in a store with two juveniles, a toddler, and you you're almost an adult, but not quite. Um, couple more years. And whatever you guys do, who's responsible for that? She is, but she's an adult. >> The 14-year-old girl got off incredibly easy, as Walmart's policy is not to press charges against minors. The officer took the opportunity to offer her some advice, explaining how life can take a wrong turn when you choose the wrong people to spend time with. >> Mhm. >> I was thinking about seeing some radios. >> Mhm. Yeah. So, you're you're you're getting off pretty easily here. Okay. But you know, you just because you're not an adult doesn't mean you can't be held accountable. You still can go to jail. You still can be arrested. Okay? You got it. I don't want to preach at you. I'm not your parent, but you you don't want to go down this path. Okay? All right. But still stay here until we get an adult to come pick you up. >> Even though she wouldn't be charged, it was still a serious situation and a valuable lesson she needed to learn. While everything was being sorted out, both Madison's parents and the teen's parents were on their way. >> You have your ID, ma'am. [Music] >> This your daughter? >> Yes. defense. >> They do what they do, don't they? You've got a child, six month old baby, and you're here with her child. >> Thank you very much. >> When Madison's mother arrived, Madison tried to shift the blame onto the teenager. Her mother was furious and understandably so. >> Is this what you're stealing? >> Yes. >> Why? Cuz she's stealing toiletries. >> You don't need stuff, Madison. You've asked for enough money to buy stuff. You don't need to steal. No. [Music] >> You don't worry about me, guys. Because where you're going from you would have yourself. >> Is is the actual country you're born in United Kingdom or Wales or >> England? >> England. >> Yeah. >> I always get confused what's considered UK and >> Yeah. I'm not. >> Yeah. Okay. Right. That's Northern Ireland, right? >> Yeah. [Music] Come on, buddy. >> Her mother grew even more upset when she saw that Madison had stolen unnecessary toiletries, especially since she was already receiving plenty of financial support from her parents. >> Did you go to jail tonight? >> You going to be out tomorrow morning? >> I'll be out tomorrow morning. >> Yeah. I don't think you're going to have a bond because the delinquency of a minor thing. So, not tonight you won't have a bond, but tomorrow you will. It's not going to be a lot. Probably going to be 10 5 10,000. So 10% of that is what would get you out $500,000 something like >> what happens if we don't have the money she gets >> just stays until >> I don't have [Music] you know that car's gone not feeling that Madison's mom clearly wanted her to learn a hard lesson and figured that a night in jail might be the perfect way to do it. When Madison got out, she also wouldn't have her car anymore, which seemed like a fair consequence. >> Father, the child. [Music] >> You don't know. >> Not not involved in the situation. Okay. [Music] He kind of just dipped our >> Madison said she didn't know where the baby's father was and that he wasn't involved at all. By this time, however, the teenage girl's father had arrived at the scene. >> All right. So, your daughter told you what's going on, right? >> Sir, >> your daughter told you what was going on? >> Yes. >> Okay. Well, she's not being charged, not going to jail. Don't thank me for that. Thank Walmart. They have a policy where they'll prosecute juveniles. >> Okay. 14. >> Yeah, >> that that's a 14 is the policy cut off. >> No, but I'm I'll tell you. >> Okay. Okay. >> But I will tell you this. If she her information will be in my system. If she gets caught doing it again at any other Walmart, she will be charged. >> Your dad, >> even if you're 14. The young girl was getting an incredibly lucky break, but it was made clear she wouldn't get a second chance if it happened again. Her father then took her home, hopefully to make sure she learned her lesson. Bad choices can lead to lasting consequences, even if you escape charges. Choose the right people to be around or risk ruining your future.
