And they I was just I just called 911. >> Okay. >> On August 23rd, 2025, employees at Atwood Lake Marina in Ohio called 911 after witnessing a golf cart drive into the water. At first, it appeared to be just a bizarre accident. But within hours, investigators would uncover something far more disturbing that happened in the Miller family. >> 7940 central. >> Yes. >> Can you get in contact with the rangers? I'm not sure what's going on here. I'm being told by bystanders that the mom's taken off with one of the other kids. >> Years later. Sounds like a mess, to be honest with you. It sounds like there's two separate incidents. The dad and possibly another child were in a boat, possibly wrecked it, and they're possibly in the water. I think they're walking the trail, and the mom's following, trying to figure it out. >> That's clear. All right, so Mhm. Can you catch me up on what's going on? We're at my dispatch. We're so confused. >> Mom evidently drove the golf cart into the lake down at the marina. >> Okay. >> Sidewalk down there, down by where the uh Yeah, rental dock is. Said God made her to have her do things and >> Yeah, so I I when I first got here, a bystander was saying that he saw him praying with the kids and that got like it was time for her husband to go and stuff like that. It seemed like she just got some >> She said her husband and her youngest son drowned this morning. So, we need to locate her husband and son. >> Yeah. >> Now, the bike that she was on is this bike. >> And I don't know if he's here or not. But the little person in the marina, the husband, we don't know where he's he's at and the 4-year-old or whatever. >> And the little kid drowned this morning. >> And the dad. >> By her word. >> Okay. Okay. >> 40-year-old Ruth Miller and her husband Marcus Miller brought their family from Holmes County to Atwood Lake for a weekend getaway. But what happened led to the disappearance of both Marcus Miller and his 4-year-old son Vincent. Upon a search conducted by investigators, Ruth and Marcus's 18-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter were found and questioned. >> Are you sure? >> That's outside there. That's not in here. >> Would your dad and little brother be out in that area three? Where's your dad and little brother? In the water? Why do you think they're in the water? >> Because that's where they are. >> That's where they are in the water. Oh my god. I don't want to see this fish. >> Okay. Well, we need to find your mom. Where do you think she might be? >> Probably over on by the trail somewhere. I don't know. >> Over by area three? >> Do you know where she Where is she at, sir? >> I do not. We're still looking for the mother. Um no sight on her and I believe there's one other kid, but the ranger has three of the kids in his uh vehicle. Ruth Miller was eventually located by a ranger next to the welcome center at Atwood Park. >> I gave him to God. >> She gave him to God? >> Yes. >> What do you mean by that? >> I put him in the lake and I gave him to God. And people are going to tell me I am crazy, but he is real and he loves you. He really does love you. He loves you. And I doubted him. And we went to the boat and his clothes were there. And God told me he in the lake and a fish swallowed him. And you're actually supposed to go down in the bottom of the lake and you will find the fish and you will find my husband. And then you will believe. She is advising that she threw her 4-year-old son in the lake to give him to God. >> I need to know where your husband's at. >> He's at the bottom of the lake in a fish. >> He's in a fish? You want me to? >> While Ruth was transported to the hospital for evaluation and deputies searched the lake for Marcus and Vincent, investigators began interviewing her children. >> The last time you saw your dad was last night when he went to bed? Okay. Did your mom go to bed last night? Were you guys in the bed before or after your parents? >> Um after. >> After your parents, so you guys stayed up a little while. Okay. >> Then what happened? You guys woke up this morning? >> Yeah. >> And mom, dad, little brother were gone? >> Um I saw them. >> But not my little brother, not mom. >> They were still there this morning? But dad wasn't. So when you guys got up this morning, what what did you guys all do? >> Um >> One one at a time. Go ahead. On the end. >> Well, we woke up. We watched the TV. >> Uh-huh. >> Then we went with mom on the golf cart. >> So the three of you went with your mother on the golf cart. >> Well, I went earlier. And I jumped in the lake, too, but I could swim, so I Yeah, I could not. It was a test from God, you know. >> Okay. I'm not disputing that, okay? >> So you went out with your mom earlier this morning? Just you and her? >> Yeah. >> And you jumped in the lake and then you got back out and then you guys came back to the camper. >> No, then they came and then we went and we prayed for a little while. >> And where was this at? >> we waited for dad and Vincent, but they did not come. >> Drove it in the marina? She just drove it in the lake? >> That was another test that we weren't supposed to do. >> Okay. So And nobody saw Vincent after he left with her mom this morning. And nobody saw Leslie and dad since last night. >> By now investigators had a clearer picture. Marcus had apparently taken his own life while Ruth had drowned Vincent and allegedly tried to do the same to her other children. After speaking with members of the family's church and their neighbors, detectives realized the warning signs may have been there all along. >> So you felt like in not so many words, the way I understand it is you felt that she was somewhat better enough to maybe get through the day however long term you're thinking we have to get her placement someplace because she's having enough episodes that it's causing problems. Now what about him? Did he get show any signs of that to you or did he >> He's always been the strong person in the family and but I think it wore him down is what I really think happened. It wore him down where >> Let me cut you off. >> I'm not quite sure. He made Yeah, it's kind of hard to explain. He He called a couple guys this week >> Okay. >> explaining or and told them, "Hey, I just wanted you to know that I really appreciate you." >> Okay. >> And uh >> Was that odd, do you think? >> Yeah, he said that's not that's not Mark at all. >> Okay. >> And uh So he we have before church Sunday we have singing and stuff. >> Right. >> practice singing so So he showed up Thursday night which was He usually doesn't but uh we've now found out that he felt got that he's supposed to lead a song. That God told him that he should lead a song. And that was >> A little strange. >> a little strange and uh He also told his mom I think he called her and apologized for stuff and and He he's I guess he felt that something's going to happen and but uh that he might not be here long. >> At approximately 6:00 p.m. divers recovered the body of 4-year-old Vincent Miller near a dock in Atwood Lake. Marcus Miller's body was also recovered the following morning. Investigators later concluded that Marcus Miller's death was accidental linked to the same shared delusion that affected Ruth. >> So you you took the golf cart to the lake. And you had promised the night before that you would give your son or all of your kids. >> All of them. I had that on there. >> That you you so you made the promise the night before you were going to give your husband and all your children to God. And so >> could be in heaven. Cuz it's I think it's beautiful in heaven. >> So you take the golf cart and you went to the dock. And Vincent went with you? And then what happened? >> Then I threw him in. >> Where were you when you threw him in? >> At the end of the dock. And Vincent would come up. But I couldn't reach him. I tried to but I couldn't. >> [clears throat] >> You tried to reach him after you threw him in? Did you call anybody for help? >> No. >> Why not? >> Because I felt God had him. He wants better than to let God have her children. >> Ruth Miller was initially charged with multiple counts including aggravated murder, attempted murder, and felonious assault. As the case moved forward a very different picture began to take shape. Three separate psychiatric evaluations all pointed to the same conclusion. Ruth Miller had been in a state of severe psychosis. In her mind, what she was doing wasn't wrong. It was necessary. Inside the courtroom, that reality became impossible to ignore. So, in March 2026, a jury ultimately found Ruth Miller not guilty by reason of insanity. Instead of a prison sentence, Ruth Miller was committed indefinitely to a high-security psychiatric facility, where she will remain until she's no longer considered a danger.
