On May 24th, 2025, a father came to the police station seeking help reporting that his son's increasingly aggressive behavior had begun tearing his family apart. >> Hey Christie, it's Officer Bargahiser with the Elyria Police Department. How are you? >> I'm all right. How are you? >> I'm doing okay. Are you up to speed on everything that's happened this morning? >> Um, I think so. >> I understand that Logan had made some statements, you know, asking for $10,000 to leave the house and then um, more specifically that he would burn the house down and that he also has a documented incident where he did in fact burn his vehicle. Is that Is that correct? He burned his vehicle? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, that's what kind of causes my concern. The ability to cause great harm to himself or other people and the fact that he already has a bit of a history of doing it. What I would like to do is first and foremost try to speak with him just so I can understand what's going on, why he feels the way that he feels. Um, especially because if he's he's got that I believe he was diagnosed with schizophrenia? >> Bipolar. >> Bipolar disorder? >> Yes. >> Is that what it is? [clears throat] Bipolar and schizophrenia? Um, I'm afraid that the medication he's been prescribed is not functioning the way that it needs to function. >> Correct. >> And for a lot of these incidents, especially when they've been diagnosed, the the intent for criminality isn't really there so much as that chemical disorder is is really leading him to do the actions that he's doing. So, my hope is that I might be able to speak with him, kind of get his side of things and see if we can't get him to a hospital for evaluation. From his history, I don't believe that I'm not sure that that a jail is the proper place for him, but with the messages that he sent on text, "Give me $10,000 and I'll leave your house alone." That's fairly close to extortion. We can agree that, correct? >> Um >> It would be. It would be. It would be. It It It satisfies It's It's a threat of any kind of property damage unless he's given a certain amount of money. But again, I'm not sure [snorts] that jail is where he needs to be. >> No, it's not. I agree with you on that. >> Is Is he aware that you're talking to us right now? >> I'm not sure. >> Is he just in separate area in the house where he might be able to stay there? >> No. >> Is he with you right now? >> Yep. >> Okay, is there any chance [music] that you can separate yourself? >> Okay, I'm outside. >> Okay. So, like I said, I really really believe that a hospital for assessment is where he belongs. >> Okay. >> I don't think >> honest with you. He's not going to do it. >> He's not going to do it. Okay. >> Um he's been in the hospital twice in the last month and a half. Um the last meds that they prescribed him, and I'm not in disagreement with you about anything you said, just so you know. I was just But he um has been in the hospital three times, or twice, and then we tried like a long-term place. The meds they gave him this last time um made him throw up every single day, and he was so anxious, he couldn't function. He has been in and out of the hospital since he's been 8 years old. He was in a diagnostic unit in Utah for 10 weeks. This is not at all our first thing. He can't live with either one of us. Like he can't. >> Okay. >> Um it's two-sided sometimes with all of us with him. You know, he's like, "I want to live with you." I'm like, "No, you're not." He goes, "But you called me." I said, "The only reason I called you is because I'm not with you. We are going through uh him getting a SSI so he would have money to live by himself. >> Did he mention to you that he had threatened to burn the house down? >> No, he did not. He read me the text he sent him that said give me $10,000 and I'll and I'll leave your house. >> Okay. >> That's what I didn't see it but that's what he read to me. Um and I said to him I'm like Logan, you're never going to blackmail us or bully us into giving you money. We're trying hard. Everybody wants you out and living on your own. >> So you calm him? >> I do. Depends. >> Do you think that he is calm right now? >> Beyond a shadow of a doubt. >> So do you believe that you could have him come up to the Elyria Police Department to speak with me? Because right now what Logan has done has created he's he has created a government interest. So there's going to be one of two outcomes. He either comes up and speaks to me or I issue a warrant for his arrest. I again really really want to reiterate I don't believe he belongs in jail but I do believe he is starting to present a credible threat to himself and those around him. >> So I understand what you're saying. I get it. Um could you come here? >> Uh actually I will talk to my boss and see if he'd allow me to come there. >> Um because I think having him in a safe place would do much better with the conversation. >> Okay. >> Because I can tell you right now if I interview said he's going to get in his car and he's going to run. >> Okay and I do not want that. >> I'm just being super honest with you. >> And I appreciate that because what I'm after is the best outcome for everybody here. I don't want you guys to have any problems because of this but I also don't want Logan to either hurt himself or someone else. I'm trying to find that achievement where everyone kind of walks away from this situation a little bit better. So I'm going to go I will ask my supervisor to see if he'll allow me to come out and and speak with Logan. Okay? So, I'll leave you here with for a moment and I will be right back. >> Okay, thanks. >> Thank you. >> After obtaining permission, the officer headed straight to the suspect's home to investigate the matter further. >> Hey Logan. >> Hey Logan. >> Good, you? >> I'm all right, thank you. >> All right, so your mom said we could use the kitchen table so we can I've got the paperwork right here. Um I'll just ask you a few questions. >> Okay. >> I want like I said, I want your side of the story. So, this morning I understand you and your dad had a bit of an argument. What what happened? >> No, um nothing really. Um he I just woke up a little upset and um I think that he had a misunderstanding that I was upset with him and I wasn't. So, I just um >> What what uh what was said while you guys were arguing at the house? >> I can't quite remember. I think he was mostly just arguing with me about like I just said that he was unmotivated in certain things. Just not being nice and >> Okay. >> Um like I didn't threaten him or anything. Like not at all. Like I didn't do anything at all. >> Was this argument over the condo? >> Uh yes. Yeah. >> Okay. Uh what's going on with the condo? >> Um we're trying to sell it. He promised me that he would give me some money from it. And now he's saying that he's not going to. >> He promised he would give you money? >> Mhm. For from it, yeah. >> Have you been working on the house or the condo? >> Yeah, yeah. I worked on it. Yeah, yeah. I fixed up and everything. >> So, you've got some sweat equity in there. >> Yeah, mhm. >> And now he's saying he's not going to pay you? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Uh that would that would frustrate me. Um has that been an ongoing argument? >> Uh yeah, about the money from the condo, yeah. >> Okay. How long have you guys been arguing over that? >> Um couple months. >> So, in that anger, is is that why you you had said you were going to burn the house down? >> I didn't say that. >> You never said that? >> said that. >> Because I can understand I can understand that. Like if if we're sitting there and we're saying, "I did the work. I've been arguing with you for months. Now what? Is the condo up for sale now?" >> It's not yet. We're trying to work it >> Yeah, [clears throat] they're really >> I I I can understand that. I can understand that statement. If you're angry enough, it's been going on for months, you've done the work, >> Mhm. >> I can understand the statement, "I'm going to burn the house down." I can get that. And I think I think anyone reviewing that can understand that. >> Yeah. I don't recall saying that at all though. I I really did not say that. >> recall saying it? Is So is there a possibility that you were angry enough, it just kind of came out? Like I know that when when I'm done like my house is a mess, it's the sixth time I've cleaned it that day, my three kids are are knocking things around and breaking it again, I have in anger said, "I will tear this house down brick by brick." >> I did not say I was going to burn the house down. >> Okay. >> Not today. >> Not today. >> I've said it like in the past, but that's in the past. >> Okay. Over like the same argument? >> Um I think it was a different argument probably, yeah. >> When you when you said, "I'll leave your house alone." What did you mean? >> I just like leave it alone. Like I won't I won't do anything to it. >> Like you won't damage it? >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Okay. Cuz it's kind of a it's a broad it's a broad statement. So the idea behind that message was give me $10,000. I won't I won't hurt your house. If you give me $10,000, I won't hurt your house. >> Yeah, and that's the it's the only thing I said about anything. >> Okay. So then what we need from your point of view >> Mhm. >> everything that happened today. All right? At I think it started at 6:00 a.m. is is when he said you came into his room. Just tell me from your perspective what happened. Okay? >> Okay. >> That's really all I need. >> All >> All set? >> Yes, sir. >> Perfect. Uh did we sign the bottom? >> No. >> Okay. >> Um I told him to go over it again with you. >> Yeah. This is everything that happened from your perspective today? >> Yes. >> Okay. This word right here, he said he >> lied. >> Lied. So, he had at one point he had told you he was going to give you the money. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, okay. >> He didn't say exactly how much, but there were it we don't know because we don't know how much the condo is going to sell for. Now, he's saying that he's not selling it anymore. >> All right. So, Logan, here's our situation, okay? With everything that we discussed and everything that we talked about, the elements of the crime for extortion have been satisfied. So, what that means is that today you're going to have to come with me. You'll be placed under arrest for extortion. >> Extortion? >> So, hold on. This does not mean you're being charged with it. Means the elements of crime have been satisfied. Everything you told me, especially about doing the work on the house, not being paid for it, mitigating factor. Okay? The fact that you were on medication for certain mental health issues, and that medication made you feel sick, so you had to stop taking it, mitigating factor. Okay? All that's happening today is that you have to come with me. This doesn't mean that you've been found guilty of it. You haven't been charged. You're just being arrested for it. Okay? >> Where? >> What do you mean for where? >> Where am I going? >> So, we're going to end up going to Lorraine County Jail today. Okay? >> For how long? >> Uh till Tuesday morning where you'll BE ARRAIGNED. LOGAN! >> AH! STOP! [ __ ] YOU! NO! NO! >> [screaming] >> NO! STOP! NO! NO! >> NO ONE WANTS THAT. >> NO! >> [screaming] >> THAT'S NOT ANOTHER CHARGE. >> NO! NO! NO! NO! SORRY. NO! [screaming] DON'T! PLEASE! NO, I CAN'T. I DO NOT WANT THIS. I do not want this. >> I'll go I'll go to the hospital. >> I do not want this. >> I'll go to the hospital. I'll go to the hospital. YOU GUYS SAID YOU WEREN'T GOING TO ARREST ME. THEY WEREN'T GOING TO ARREST ME. >> STOP IT NOW. >> THEY WEREN'T GOING TO ARREST ME. >> WE'RE GOING TO ROLL YOU OVER to your stomach. >> No, please don't. >> Mom, please back up. We got you got one fighting. WHAT IS THIS THING? NOW YOU'VE GOT RESISTING ARREST, BUD. YOU'RE GOING to get the taser. Go get a taser, buddy. >> Please stop. >> Get on your stomach now. GET ON THE [ __ ] GROUND. GET HIS OTHER ARM. GET ME YOUR OTHER ARM. Taser deployed. Assault on a police >> You guys I should not have called you. >> He's in custody. Buddy That did not have to go that way. You were kind. >> You were not >> That was unbelievable. >> You were not kind to me. You hit me in the face. >> You're grabbing my neck. >> Yes. >> That male's in custody. >> I didn't do anything wrong. >> Well, you most certainly did now. >> That's great. >> Okay, pal. >> I shouldn't come here, man. >> He shouldn't have fought the police. He didn't have >> I didn't do anything. I didn't do anything. You guys heard me. I've been told when? Until when? Until when? >> So, >> [clears throat] >> sorry to interrupt. Um, if there's outside medication brought in, they can't use that, but they will prescribe whatever it is he needs inside the Learning County Jail. They have a nurse, which she has access to a pharmacy. I already told him anything that he needs, um, they can look up his medical history. The only thing is is that they will only give him what he's prescribed. So, if there's anything else that you guys are taking like over the counter, he won't have that, but anything that's prescribed, they'll give that to him at the frequency he's supposed to have it. >> Okay. I just will tell you from my experience that very hard to get and a lot of places like the last hospitalization we had to bring it up because they don't have it because it's like super expensive. >> Okay. Hey, do you know your mom's phone number by heart? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. So, just if if if the nurse tells you that there's something that they they don't have, and they would accept mom to bring, just give her a call, and then she'll bring that out. Is that okay? >> Yeah, and the is uh is probably the most important thing that he needs to take. It's the one that stops the voices in his head. >> Okay. >> And the >> It'll all get brought up with the medical staff [cough] at the county. >> Yeah, I mean, cuz if he if gets off that, it was bad. >> Right. >> We we've got quite a bit of history with him. >> Yeah. Yeah. Um Yeah, me too. about but you were not convicted. You would have had your day in court. You have to go talk to a judge. Your arraignment would have been on Tuesday. Tuesday the judge would have decided if he would have set a bond or not. Okay. Seeing as you haven't been in trouble in a really long time, I was fairly confident that you were going to get out on a bond on Tuesday. We were trying to fit the pieces together as best as possible for this whole situation to go as well as it could. Okay. That's what we were trying to explain to you when you were in the squad. Right? We did not intend for this to go this way at all. We did everything that we could to not have it go this way and to paint you in as good of a picture as we could. Everything that we talked about still going to be in the report but now like your mom said, now there's two things. We have everything that happened with your dad which is what we were in there talking about and now we have this. Okay? So This would be resisting arrest and assault on a police officer as well as obstruction. We got to get going. Yeah, we got to go. I know. I know sweetheart. I love you. I love you. I know you're I know you're overwhelmed and you're processing and you're [clears throat] scared. I understand. We will do everything in our power to explain what's happening and try and keep him calm. Okay? Again, I told you my entire goal was to have everyone walking away from this positively. Bit of a wrench in the works. We're still going to work for it. Okay? Thanks for being patient with us.
