I saw her. She was laying on the floor with like her whole right eye was just covered in blood. >> What happened today? How did it all start? >> Well, I pushed him. He fell back. While the whole thing was happening, my mom yelled, "Um, he's trying to kill us." And that really pissed me off. And I was like, "Shut the up." He got slapped in the face and I jumped on him, started punching him on the ground. >> I would never hurt them. >> Did you hurt him today? >> I saw her. She was laying on the floor with like her whole right eye was just covered in blood. >> Okay. Did you see how how she got that bloody eye? Yeah, my beat her. >> Do you know why? >> He was he was slapping her like really hard and he had a beaten he got >> Where was your he was trying to fight back with my cuz he was screaming at me. >> Do you know why they were fighting? Yeah, because because he to stop bothering me and then he he told my I'm telling you to shut up and get out of my face and then he just and then all and he said then said no and then he just he he got slapped in the face and I jumped on him started punching him on the ground. >> Do you know if you're you know if you're drinking today at all any alcohol or beer? He He walked to the gas station to get something. I don't know if he drank any beer or anything. >> Okay. >> He just came back with like a Mountain Dew can or something. >> Oh, I see. Okay. >> On the morning of Sunday, February 20th, 2022, just after 11:17 a.m., an emergency call brought multiple police units to a home in Walkershaw, Wisconsin. The urgency of the situation was immediately clear when a child claimed to have witnessed violence inside his own home. Dispatch reported that a small child had run out of the house screaming for help while a woman could still be heard crying out from inside. >> 911. What's your emergency? >> It's a county. I'm transferring over a caller for a small child that came out screaming, reporting a domestic. >> Okay. Hello. >> Hi. >> Hi, this is Walk City 911. So, where's the emergency? What's going on there? >> Um, so I just got here and I get out of the car and there's a little kid screaming help and he's talking about and he doesn't know what to do. I don't know what's going on. He doesn't even have his shirt on or shoes. Do you know who lives here or do you know the people there? >> No, I mean they're my neighbors but I I don't talk. >> You don't know their name or anything? Okay. >> No. >> Is a little kid with you now? >> Yeah, he's with my friends like >> Okay. Are you Are you right by him or how old does he look to be? >> I'd probably say about like Yeah. Nine. >> Okay. Are you able to talk? Are you able to talk to him? >> Somebody Somebody's screaming in the house. Who's screaming in the house? >> I don't know. A woman. Like a woman is screaming in the house. >> Officer Fenberg was the first to arrive on scene. Additional officers arrived shortly after and approached the residence, knocking on the door. After a brief moment, a man stepped outside identified as 43-year-old Curtis. Officers immediately noticed a strong odor of intoxicants coming from him. Moreover, his hands and clothing appeared to be stained with blood, and he seemed disoriented, breathing heavily as he stood before them. In that moment, Curtis made a statement indicating that he had experienced earlier in life and that things had gotten out of hand that day. Almost immediately after he stepped outside, officers heard a woman's voice from inside the home calling out for help. Officers quickly placed Curtis in handcuffs and entered the residence. Inside the living room, the scene was chaotic and deeply distressing. The officers observed a battered man lying face down on the floor with a large amount of blood on his face, the carpet, and the wall nearby. He was identified as 70-year-old Wayne. Officers also observed an injured woman lying on her back with a recliner chair on top of her. She was identified as Cindy, age 65. Both Wayne and Cindy were transported to Walkershaw Memorial Hospital for further medical treatment. Meanwhile, officers conducted a detailed examination of the residence. Photographs were taken to document the condition of the home. Items, including a broken glass lamp, a towel with blood stains, swabs from various surfaces, and a damaged television were collected as evidence. Clothing belonging to Curtis, Wayne, and Cindy was also collected. >> Yep. Can you take off your belt and just pass me your belt real quick? It's fine. >> Why don't you go have a seat on that chair right there? You can keep your No, hang on. Hold on. Hold on. Curtis, hang on. Curtis. Curtis, keep your pants on. >> No, you said take off. >> No, you just meant the belt. >> I just wanted the belt. >> So, I think we can let him wash up now, right? Go to the bathroom. I took pictures. See how we took pictures at the scene? >> Yeah. Um, use the restroom real quick and just leave everything for now. Use the restroom. Here. Come here. >> Take my pants. You're good. You want to put them up? Yeah. You put them on because you're going to be holding them up. Yeah. Which bathroom do you want to go up here? All right. >> Later that afternoon, investigators met with Curtis in the interview room. He was informed of his rights and agreed to speak with them without an attorney present. When asked about his condition, he stated that he felt sober, though he declined to take a breath test. When I was a teenager, I used to deal with Mark um Stigler. >> Oh, yeah. >> And Jim and uh Steve >> were really cool guys. But >> yeah, >> they they were busting me for spray painted graffiti. Long story. I trouble before, but Did you always live in that house? >> I had my whole life turned around and going straight. No, I I lived in an apartment on Oakland. I lived in two different um three different rooming houses like on Maid and Wisconsin. I lived on my own apartment with for eight years on Main Street and my parents have no right to do this with me to start a fight with me. Saw them do this to me two days ago. And I I told two days ago we just went through all this. I told him, "You saw what they did to me. I'm setting a good example for you. I'm the one setting a good example for you." >> They're the ones yelling at me, provoking me, starting fights with me. And what did I do? I went and s sat in front of my and kneel down. I mean in front of my do my my dad and kneel down and I kneel down and I just said you know can you just recognize that I'm not the one >> right >> continuing the conver conversation that can you please recognize that I'm not the one arguing and he's like you're the one arguing and I'm like my my Mom argues with my dad every single day, yells at him, but my dad acts like she can do no wrong. >> So today, she starts a big fight with me. And you know, my dad always takes her side whether she's wrong or not. And I'm like, I'm not even doing anything. I'm not All right. All right. Well, I'm going to step out of here for a couple minutes. I got to see what's up and then uh we'll be checking on you. It's >> But I'm not going to deny, you know, what I did. I'm not going to say I didn't do what I did do, >> right? >> You know, I'm kind of proud of myself for sticking up for myself as a victim. I'm not going to just sit there and be a victim my whole life. My parents should have went to jail >> so many times for what they did to me and they got away with it. And some of those times I didn't know. I had no idea they were lying about what happened. I didn't know. Like when I was 16, 17 or whatever, I didn't know my parents were lying about what happened. I didn't understand why the cops weren't taking them away. So, they got away with way too much, man. >> So, sounds like there's a lot of stuff. Um, somebody's going to be calling in to talk to you to to hear your whole story about everything >> if if you're willing to talk to them. Um, can I get you like a bag of chips or something? I know you got coffee, water. Can I get you food or anything like that? >> Can we some McDonald's? >> Okay, I'll see if we can make that happen. You like the chicken nuggets? You like your burgers? >> You like beef? >> Beef? What about quick chip? >> They got burgers. >> They got burgers. I go to Quick Chip a lot. I eat way too much food at Quick Chip. As a matter of fact, they before he came in >> from chicken from that's generally who we have an account with is quick trip. >> Quick trip. I'd rather have chicken. >> Okay. >> Okay. We'll figure something out. >> Okay. >> During the interview, Curtis described how the events of that morning began. Today was the least day out of all days that I would have started any trouble over anything because I'm just waiting one more day until I can cash my check. >> Mhm. >> And my parents knew this. Just I have the check. It's $3,200 that I got from school for my grants and loans. So, it's like tomorrow I could cash it, pay them back for what I owe them, and pay I just I just don't understand why they started this big fight with me knowing they could get their money that I owe them tomorrow. Now, I'm not obviously not going to pay them anything. because this is absurd. I told my mom I wanted um I told her, you know, about the chores I did around the house was still sleeping. I asked her if I could possibly have $3 and she asked me for what? And I said, "Well, whenever wakes up, you know, I want to go for a walk with him. and buy him whatever snacks he wants. And so I gave me $10 and I woke and this was a little bit after 8 8:00 a.m. and she told me that he had uh went to bed around midnight. So I said I told you he can sleep in as long as he wants, but I wanted to go for a walk with him. >> Mhm. >> And he decided to wake up and he wanted to shoot some darts. And so he had a dart board set up with the um >> Hey Dave, how are you? >> Good. How are you? Pretty good. winter coat behind it and he stuck it the dart almost stuck into the winter winter coat. So I told him we need to set up something and I told him um there was like a a ball game where you throw the the balls into the holes like on bozo or whatever. >> Okay. And I set that up in front of the glass so he couldn't hurt the glass. And then he threw another one and it stuck in the thing. And I'm like, see, I did it. And I told him, you know, if he he came with me, I'll buy him whatever soda he wants because we were just all out of soda. >> I mean, for him, my my dad and my mom had their own soda. So I said, I can buy him whatever soda he wants. So I was practically begging him to just come with us, >> come with me to get exercise. And I even told him, hey, you know, your doctor said, you told me your doctor said you were overweight, so don't blame me for not getting enough exercise. I want to walk to the gas station with you. Then my dad woke up and came downstairs and I'm thinking, "Okay, there's no problem with me leaving because my dad's up. Doesn't want to go." So I'm like, "That's fine. I'm not going to make him." So I came back from the store. What time did you go to the store? Do you remember? >> I was like 8:15 or whatever. >> What store did you go to? >> Um Speedway on Grant. >> And I remember thinking like I wish was with me cuz I had so much, you know, things that talked to him and whatever. And like on the way back, there was this house that had a um porta potty that had a whole dumpster full and a freaking um dog that had um Doberman colors that was probably Bart Pitbull came jumping up and and scratching me and running all around me And I went back to the house thinking it's going to follow me all the way home. >> Mhm. And I went to the house and I mean I explained this to my and my my my dad that you know about the dog and everything and how the dog I thought the dog was going to rip my pocket out and everything but they were friendly and the dog broke off the rope and all this stuff. And I mean, it's just like would have just went with me. I don't think any of this would happen. But then once I got back, it's like my mom's screaming at me for leaving without >> after I begged him to come with me. And she's the one that gave me the money to go to the gas station. and I bought soda. It's just crazy. It's like part of it I don't understand what happened, you know? I'm not sure 100%. >> Okay. >> What happened or what's going on? It's like >> So, what was your mom saying to you when you got back? What was she yelling at you? I'm not sure something about um and she did say that she thought I smelled like alcohol. You know, >> did that make her upset? >> Probably. You know, it's not a reason for her to be upset. It's just a for I think it's just a reason for her to be um take advantage >> of me and start a fight with me for no reason. >> So, I didn't do anything wrong. >> Okay. So, you got home and you said that she started yelling at you, correct? How did that make you feel? I remember I got home and I was talking to my and my dad about the dog that basically, you know, wasn't trying to talk attack me, but I took it back to the house >> Mhm. that it belonged to and dog had ripped my grocery bag and I they the owners gave me a new bag and told me they were sorry and the other dog looked like a pit bull but it seemed real friendly so I didn't mind knocking on the back door and all this stuff and it's like I was having a good day. >> Okay. So even with the dog in your bag, it didn't upset you? >> No. Like I mean you can ask the owners of the house and everything. >> Cool. They were they were super kind to you. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> And I was just having a good day and and then there was this guy um with a red work truck at the top of our alley. And I even told my dad all about it. Like I met this guy Paul. Like me and my dad we always see this red truck. Mhm. >> And you know, it just seems kind of weird. We don't know who he is and blocking the um the alley sometimes. And I'm like, I met this I met that guy finally. His name's Paul. He's cool and everything. And it's just like everything fine. Everything's cool. and my was playing darts with the china cabinet behind him. So, I set up this whole thing so that his darts wouldn't hit the glass and everything was fine until my mom woke up and she started throwing a fit and starting a fight. And it's just like my mom had just given me $10 because I told her I asked her for $3 and I told my mom, you know, all the chores I did and everything and it's like there's no reason for all this aggression and mad and all this stuff. >> So, how did I do anything to deserve this? >> So, how did it make you feel when mom was yelling at you? I'm not sure. >> Did it upset you? >> Especially cuz I mean you must have >> you were having a good day up until then, right? >> It must have. I'm not sure. >> Okay. So, what happened after she starts yelling at you? >> I'm not sure. It's like my dad will take her side whether she's wrong or not, which is I don't know kind of frustrated with that. Is that accurate? Well, just the other day, it's like just two days ago, my mom was screaming at me and telling me all this stuff and she was lying about me and I posted it on Facebook. >> Mhm. for a couple days or maybe a day and then I changed it to the privacy to um just, you know, to me. >> Mhm. >> So no one else could see it. I mean, I just wanted to vent. But it was a big long thing about how, you know, proof, three reasons or four reasons why my mom doesn't love me and my dad disagrees with her about everything. And it's like, come on. that was like nobody uh commented on it or like liked it and I'm like, you know, I was just kind of venting and then I changed it uh to private the next day so no one else would see it. And it's just crazy. It's like what? And then I talked to my about it and he agreed with me to everything. I'm like there, you know, wasn't I wasn't trying to get him to >> Sure. >> agree with me. I just wanted >> But you wanted to vent and share with your >> No, I didn't want to vent. I just wanted to get >> his opinion about what he think. And I'm like, you know, everything they said was abusive. I'm like I said >> I'm >> I said I'm trying to set a good example for him. >> Sure. >> They were being 100% abusive towards me. They were um attempting >> like always. I mean, >> they're tending to they're like >> trying to antagonize me and provoke me >> all the time, like constantly. He then went on to make several alarming allegations of mistreatment he stated he experienced during his childhood over the course of several years. >> How long has that been going on? >> Since I was four. >> I've been a by them. Sorry about that. Since I was four, I've been by them. You know, I mean, before that, I've been hit with a hammer. I've been whipped with the belt so that the the bruises were like twice as wide as the belt. >> Mhm. >> In third grade and in fifth grade. And the thing that bothers me is they said they only did it once. I'm like, no, they didn't do it once. It's like in third grade and in fifth grade. I had to go to school like that where it hurt me all day to sit. I was tortured all day long. >> And I rem and they said they remember the third grade one where my dad made me pull my pants and my underwear down to my ankles to whip me. But he did it again when he was in fifth grade and they denied doing it. Oh, go ahead. Did Did you ever tell anyone about that when you were younger >> or did you ever have a >> No, because I you know, it seemed like my principles were always like on the same side, my parents and my my even my fourth grade teacher, Mr. Sites. Now, I know, you know, it's over. I thought about suing him and getting a couple people on my side that that knew it. But my fourth my fourth grade teacher, Mr. Sykes, he used to make us put our hands behind our backs for a good guy visas and stand there like this. >> Mhm. >> Until our our legs would shake and really >> scream at us to stand there. His name was Dan Sykes. And I think now his son's a teacher over there. >> What school? >> Higher elementary school. when I was in fourth grade and I mean I had like so many witnesses and and I'm like I know after 30 years I'm not going to be able to sue anymore and all this stuff but it's like I was afraid to tell my parents or they would say you're getting in trouble in school but I was getting tortured in school and then you know I don't blame them for that but you know they My mom said when she found out that I was um by her younger sister or molested or whatever that she felt like she I should have told her when I was younger because she would have been able to relate to me more. But after she found out, she acted even worse towards me. Not nicer towards me. When when did when did that take place? >> When did what take place? The >> Well, I can remember when I was four years old until I was 10 years old. >> So, a span of six years >> as far as I can remember. >> And I remember my younger brother Anson uh come crawling around the corner of the bed saying, "Haha, you are humping. You are humping." I mean, you know, I'm trying to change the subject and bring all this stuff up, but that's what my mom does to me. Whenever I try to tell an intelligent conversation with her, my son is my witness. Just the other day, I don't I don't know. All right. So, it sounds like you've had a rough childhood with obviously being being assaulted. Um, what what is your mom's what's the aunt's name or your your mom's sister? Well, now it's Laura, but her um main name would have been Laura And it's just like how they pronounce Yes. That's our but we always pronounced my my grandpa was French Canadian but all of my mom's brothers and sisters said okay. So then I know you've kind of given us a a gamut of your your life and it sounds like you know like no one listens to you. Am I is that right or wrong that you don't like when you try to tell someone some something they turn it on you right similar I just feel like you know once my parents knew a little bit more about what happened to me they should have like been a little nicer to me but instead they were even more mean, >> do you think they believed you >> or did they just >> Yeah, I think they believed me and they just didn't give a [ __ ] what happened to me. >> Okay. And there were times like when I was um three or four when my dad um made he kept saying come closer, come closer and being nice to me and he pulled my pants down to my ankles and he was being friendly and suckered me in and he put my naked body over his naked body and just started spanking the [ __ ] out of me. And and then after he was done, he said, and this is when we lived on Carlton Place. And then after he was done, he said this um yellow crayon on the sink. >> Mhm. And I'm like, that was there for a long time and no one ever said it was me. My my brother admitted it was him. You know, if I was like five, my brother was like three. >> Okay. >> So, he's like, "What? Why is this yellow crayon on the sink?" And I'm like, "He's sp he's beating the [ __ ] out of me naked with my naked body pressed against his naked body. over some crayon on the sink that you didn't >> over some crayon on the sink that there's no reason why he thought it was me. And I said that was Anson that did it and he was like, "Oh." And he just, you know, after he was done spanking me, he stood up and pulled up his pants. So it's not like he had to finish before he spanked me. He did that naked on naked like basically the on purpose for no reason. >> And he was on the toilet. >> Yeah, he was on the toilet. They're mad at me for remembering. They're acting like they don't remember. And they're acting like They're mad at me for remembering what they did. They're not sorry. And every single week I'm like, "You should be sorry for that. You should be sorry for this." Not bringing up the past. I'm never bring bring up the past to them. But every single week, they treat me even worse. They start fights with me for no reason. Now that I'm in trouble for this, I could never be a drug counselor. That's all I wanted to do was help drug addicts. >> That's very honorable. That's all I wanted to do. My best friend died of of drug and that's not the only reason. You know, I did it because my back hurts and I'm sick of being a slave and I just wanted to work in a job. You know, I think I spit on the table. I didn't mean to, but I didn't want to be a slave my whole life. I just wanted a desk job. That's why I went to college. Sure. >> I'm sick of working at all these factories where I work twice as hard as someone else >> and not seeing any benefit or whatever. I didn't plan on getting into fights or getting screamed at or anything. >> When you say getting into fights, what do you mean? >> My mom just screaming at me for no reason. >> Okay. >> It's nuts. She's 100% narcissistic. Okay. >> What was she saying to you? >> Well, she did say I smelled like alcohol. >> Okay. Did you take offense to that? >> No. >> Okay. >> Not that I remember. >> So, what happened next after she starts yelling at you and saying you smell like alcohol? I don't remember exactly. >> What do you remember? Just so I understand what happened, what you were thinking, what you were feeling. >> I don't really remember. >> So, you don't remember at all what happened? >> No. I remember telling my dad about Spanguli. >> Okay. And I was watching it and I told all about the spiny episode because I know he wasn't going to watch it. He just watches he's just weird episode, you know. And my dad was okay with shooting darts in the the the dining room. >> Okay. Even though I'm the one that set up the thing behind the dart board so it wouldn't hit the china cabinet and all this stuff. >> Sounds like you were trying to be very considerate of your parents' stuff. >> Yeah. All day long. And for the last >> So then she starts yelling at you after you've you're trying to be considerate and think of them. And I'm sure that made you upset, right? After all, I don't remember getting upset because she said that. >> Okay. When did you get upset? >> I don't know. I'm not sure. >> Okay. What happened between you and your mom then? Well, I don't really feel like talking about it, but I know my dad probably interfered. I'm not sure exactly what happened. >> What did your dad interfere with? What do you mean by he interfered? >> Just like started yelling at me and get in my face. >> He was getting in your face. Yeah, just like yelling at me. >> I was yelling at you >> in a close range. >> Okay. >> Just like she was. It's like she can yell at me at a close range and basically screaming in my face and I'm just trying to deescalate the situation and answer her question. But before I answer a question, she changes the subject. And my dad not only allows her to do that, but like backs her up and supports it. >> What happened when next when your dad started siding with your mom? I mean, I'm sure that would that was very frustrating for you, right? Was it accurate to say that? Yeah, I'm sure you know. Not sure exactly what happened. I really frustrated by it. >> And how did you respond to that frustration? Well, something had probably happened. Obviously, something, you know, happened today and I'm not going to force you to tell me what happened, but it always there's always two sides to the story. And you've kind of given your your background of what your frustration or I don't even want to put words in your mouth. What led to today? You were assaulted. You were you were beating your you know putting dick to dick on your dad as he's beating you for something you didn't even do. They don't believe you when you were assaulted. You were um I mean you told us >> my dad doesn't even care. I mean my mom doesn't even care what my dad did. It's like he can do nothing wrong. And my mom believes me of what her young youngest sister did, but she remained friends with her. And she blames that on me because I said, um, you know, it's not fair that my youngest cousin doesn't have it, doesn't get to grow up with all her cousins like I did. And that's her excuse for being friends with her younger sister if she knew what happened after my grandma died. And it's well my my job here at the PD is to do I I investigate assaults. So if this is something that you want to move forward with then we can definitely discuss this. Um obviously I would talk to your brother because you said he was there and he witnessed it. So, we can definitely go forward with this if this is something. >> My brother was only like 2 or 3 years old. >> Okay. >> And we were watching like Mr. Rogers or something. My grandparents living cut a hair or something. And he crawled in all fours around the corner and said, "Haha, you are humping. You are humping." And that's the only time. >> Okay. >> So, he's not going to remember that. >> Okay. And you said this was in K or >> It was like in Kad or South Milwaukee or something. It was like I'm sure I'm sure you know that can be sorted out easily. But you know my brother and I have had this conversation about this haha you are humping comment. So, I'm sure he remembers having the conversation, but he might not remember >> exactly >> when it was remembered. But if my aunt's 9 years older than me and I was four, she would have only been like 13 or something. So, I don't I don't see how she could be, you know, criminally charged for that. Well, 13 can be charged. >> Um, you know, I'd have to look at the the >> But even when I was 10 years old, you know, I mean, um, I asked I asked her, "No, let's do that." Like, can you hump on me or whatever? cuz we had done it so many times and I was 10 years old and I actually asked her >> to do it >> the one time if we could do that. >> Did she do it? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> And she was like, "We we got to do it on the floor so we were quiet. Doesn't wake up Graham or whatever." Detective Stucker advised Curtis that all his allegations would be looked into separately and that the statute of limitations would be reviewed. Curtis agreed to proceed with those allegations at a later date. >> You know, it sounds like you've had a rough upbringing and today something happened where you know something happened bad, right? >> If you're talking about statutes of limitations with assault with my aunt, I mean, what about physical when my >> No, it would all be encompassing. My dad whipped me with the belt. >> He would talk. >> I mean, when I was like four or five years old, my dad hit me with a hammer on the butt >> and and all that's encompassing. It's not just this saw with your aunt. It's it's everything that that's happened to you throughout your childhood, what you can remember. It's something we can follow up on if that's what you would like. Um, >> and I don't know if you tell me what what I want to hear or what, but >> no, that that's what I do for a living. and my brother has a restraining order against me. But if promise you if you look at the if if there the first judge told my brother to stop wasting the court's time and then he took me to court again and I told the judge if you if there's a manuscript or transcript of what was said in the first hearing. My brother contradicted everything he said, proving he's a liar. My brother only has a restraining order against me because he lied about everything and the judge didn't care. It's a lie. Again, we we'll discuss the the child, okay, on another day. Um, again, we're here to to get your side of the story, which you've kind of given us your your your life history and what led up to this. Um, seeing some of the photographs of of your mom and dad, it's it's kind of serious. So, we kind of just want to know what happened because it sounds like you were a victim your whole life and something today triggered something and we just kind of want to get your side of the story. Okay. Um because it does look it it does look bad the the optics. But again, you're being very upfront and honest and and saying I've been a victim. I've been a victim. I've been a victim. Okay. I'm not saying that, you know, being a victim should result in this, but maybe you weren't heard. Maybe no one believed you. Maybe no one did the right took the right step steps to help you in school. Miss Stroberg, you know, I don't know if any of this was disclosed. She'd be a mandatory reporter. Probably should have been reported, but I'm not blaming her. I don't know exact exactly what was done. Um, but we're just trying to get what happened today from you. And again, I know it's upsetting. I know it's not something easy to talk about because I'm sure deep down you love your parents and this is not something you want to do. You said you were having a great day. >> Wanted to hang out with your Anthony. Just wanted to take him go get a soda and walk. And it's a beautiful day out >> and he didn't want to go. I was nice enough to let him >> stay home and not make him do something he didn't want to do. But yet that was held against me. Mhm. >> And I met a neighbor. I told my dad and my, you know, the dog attack me, not attacked me, but you know, he's going to follow me home. I took him back to his house and then I came back and at the top of the alley, I met a new neighbor who we'd seen go up and down the alley so many times. And >> that was Paul. >> Yeah. I didn't My mom gave me 10 bucks. There was no pro, you know. It's like I just did all those chores for her. I washed all her laundry. Made sure all It's like I had no intentions in doing anything bad to anybody. What is going on? And that's what we're trying to find out. What What happened today? What happened? And you said your mom kind of got in your face, started screaming at you, then your dad kind of jumped in and basically teamed up against you, and then you know what happened after that? Well, something happened. >> Something like that. >> You know, a victim can only be victimized for so long. >> Sure. Absolutely. You can only take so much, >> you know? I mean, I've been made tough my whole life. It's like I'm not even allowed to cry. If you need to cry, man, you can cry in here. So, is this just the tipping point today? I'm just heading now. >> I mean, agreed to with me that just a couple days ago, you know, my dad was screaming at me. I mean, not screaming, but yelling and taking her side. And what did I do? I walked over there and I knelt down a few like couple feet away from him. I knelt down and I said, "Okay, what you know, what's your point on this? What's your standpoint in this? Like, can you at least agree that she's the one arguing arguing and changing the subject?" And he said, "No." >> And this was you now down to your dad. >> My dad. >> Okay. because was sitting on the couch and he for you know he didn't get involved in the conversation at all but he was watching YouTube videos and my mom just kept yelling at me. It's like it it was because every single week she harasses about why he hasn't got a um the jab the co shot. >> Okay. >> And I'm like he's only 9 years old. You need to stop harassing him. Mhm. >> And now you know after today I'm sure all my story of parent parental rights are gone. >> What happened today that would make your rights go? >> I'm here in front of being accused of something. >> Accused of >> I'm a suspect of something. >> Suspect in what? >> In whatever there's two detectives in front of me for. Well, so so we got called in because the injuries to your mom and dad. We have not spoken with them. We have not spoken with We have not spoken with anyone. So, we're we're we're talking to you first. Okay. Um I don't know what happened. Was it self-defense? Was it something else? I I don't know what it was. That's why we're trying to ask you what happened today to get a better idea of Okay. again. You gave us that history up to this point, but we don't know what happened today. So, we want to tell the story. We want to put that puzzle together. And your side of the puzzle is not quite there. Okay? Once we go ask them, obviously their story is going to be different, but we have nothing. If you don't say anything to us, we have nothing to to say. Okay. Well, he's saying that this happened today and that this is what happened his whole childhood. And to this point, you've been on them and on them and on them, right? >> According to the medical assessment, Wayne sustained serious injuries, including facial fractures, a dislocated eye, and a brain bleed requiring surgery and intensive care. Cindy suffered a laceration to her nose, bleeding in her left eye, and bruising to both hands. Curtis's son, who was present at the residence that morning, witnessed the incident before running out of the house to call for help. During the interview, however, whenever investigators attempted to refocus on the physical events, Curtis continued to deflect, returning instead to his alleged past experiences. >> You think that your parents are going to say about what happened today? >> I don't care what they have to say. They've lied too many times. >> Well, you're telling us that and I believe you that they've been lying for so long and taking advantage of you. And that's why my partner and I are trying to understand your side of the story of what happened today. because they're clearly going to say one thing and it's probably not going to match up with what actually happened. >> Even the last time I got it disorderly, my my parents both said to me, they would do whatever they could to set that straight so that that wouldn't be held against me. So they admitted the last time something happened that I didn't do anything wrong repeatedly. >> You think they're going to say that today about what happened? >> Well, I just hope that they, you know, stick to their story about the last time. >> Okay. What about today? Because because the last time um was a girl named Becky de la involved >> and I never hit a female. >> Have you ever hit >> in my life? And I never would. >> Have you ever hit your mom? >> I never hit a female in my life. >> Right. But have you ever hit your mom? >> And I never would. But I told my but my dad said that to my brother, >> you know, and I was like, why would he lie? Why would he lie and say that? >> So, how can I go off of what they tell me to that happened today if you're telling me constantly that they're lying? The only person that's going to potentially tell me the truth would be you. Is that fair to say? But you're not telling me what happened. You can't believe anything they say. >> Curtis, >> according to the history, >> the we've been listening to you about your past and and I think and maybe I'm I'm interpreting it wrong. You've kind of said that no one listens to you, right? That you know, you've been assaulted physically. Uh your your mom and dad have been on you for years. You're 30 years old. 30 31. >> Yeah. And I could I'm 43 or whatever. And I could go on and on about what they did to me >> and and I want to listen to that. But again, you keep saying that no one the cops didn't listen. They lied. They lied. >> Statutes to And I'm sorry. I apologize to you for talking to you. >> No, no. I'm just trying to So, we're here to listen. Okay. I don't want it to be the same story when you look back at this six, seven months down the road and go, "Oh, again, they lied and now I'm in trouble again." When you have a chance to tell us what happened today, tell us why it happened cuz you've you've kind of given us the background. You you've given us the background of what may have prompted this. Again, if you don't tell us, which is fine. I mean, I'm not going to sit here and you're going to tell me what happened, but then your parents are going to tell the story and is going to tell the story and then yours is going to be blank and then it's going to look like you don't care about what happened today. >> I bet you're hiding something, >> but that you have given us that you were a victim for a long time and you're trying to get your life together. You said you had the money. You're going to pay him tomorrow. All you did is wake up today and wanted to be son and then here we are you're talking to us which is probably the freaking last thing you wanted to do on a Sunday afternoon 50 degrees right and so that that's why we keep asking you what is your story and if you're willing to tell us that would help the situation because it fills in your side of it for your whole life you've never gotten listened to the police have never listened to you >> we are here to listen to you right Okay. So, that's what I'm trying to to to get across to you is that I want to listen. I want to hear what happened today and I will keep listening to your stories because I think you need to be heard. I think it's hurt you >> and it would hurt me >> when when you're constantly battling, you know, with your parents. It's constantly arguing, constantly being accused of this, constantly being on the wrong end of the stick. So, today is your chance. Well, my mom only physically pushes against me physically, I think, because my dad's going to back her up. Wrong or right? >> Mhm. >> Did that happen today? >> Yes, it did. >> Did she physically touch you? Like, she hitting you? You said >> just like her shoulder and nasty or whatever. I don't want her touching me at all. >> Okay, >> it's gone on too long. I've asked her so many times. >> Please don't touch me. And she'll say, oh, I can't help it. My big fat belly, you know, or whatever. And it's like, don't even get that close to me. She's screaming in my face. So she was screaming in your face today and she her body >> and screaming in my ear which could h which could damage my eard drum. >> Absolutely. Absolutely. Did she hit you at all today? >> Not that I remember. >> Did your dad hit you at all today? >> I believe he swung at me. >> Okay. And then what happened after that? I don't think he landed the swing, but I kind of, you know, dodged it and ducked it or whatever. But my I don't think my dad wants to do that towards me. I think he's sticking with her for security and he's just like he's afraid of her. She yells at him every single day. She swears. See, even that hurts. >> What happened there? >> Hurts my finger. >> What happened to your hand? It happened. >> What happened? >> Something. And again, this is going back to what my partner said earlier. You know, we're here to hear you out. >> I mean, my dad comes at me lunging over me, screaming, yelling >> in the same mean face he's ever had >> whenever he me. >> So, I have all the right to think that he's attacking me, right? >> Yeah. >> And it's only because of her. He's afraid to disagree with her because she yells at him every single day they have an argument and he doesn't even argue back. He just says okay or no I didn't or whatever and she'll keep going on and on and I've tried to have this conversation with my dad like if I'm not here because it's some big burden for me to live in their house. It's like if I'm not here, she's going to do it to you. And he's like, "Do what to you?" And I'm like, "Whatever she's doing to me, she's going to take it out on somebody." >> Mhm. >> She is going to judge with handcuffs on because of what she's done to him. >> You said that she >> No, she didn't hit him today. >> Okay. Did he hit you? You said that he swung at you. Did he land that hit? No, but it was close. >> Okay. And how did you respond to that? >> Like moved out of the way. >> Okay. Did he try? >> Cuz his hand hit my arm. >> Okay. Is that what happened to your hand there? >> No. >> How did that happen? >> Just happened. Am I going to I mean to be completely honest with you guys even though I don't trust you at all you know I'll admit things might have got a little bit out of control. >> Okay. >> And I don't really want to say much more than that. >> Do you need some more water? I really need to take a bath. >> Okay, we'll do that and then we'll get you more water. Okay, >> that'd be great, too. >> Okay. >> All right, why don't you follow me and we'll take you to the bathroom over here. >> As the interview progressed, Curtis finally began revealing more details. Curtis, as as we were walking to the bathroom, you'd mentioned to me that again what we've already talked about is that that it's always your parents side of the story. And again, we tried to explain to you that we're trying to give you that chance to tell your story right now. Is that something you're going to want to do or is it just going to be you want us to go off your parents again? Because I don't want to do that. I want to tell your story. I think you've been a victim for too long to be honest with you. And this is your chance to say this is what happened because you you've given up the leadup to this is what happened today. Your mom got in your face. Your dad jumped in. Your dad took a swing at you. And you defended yourself, right? And you have every right to defend yourself. Well, I can tell you that I pushed him, he fell back, and my mom, you know, she's kind of handicapped. She fell down. There's been a couple time, you know, when she fell down, I had to help her up. So, I know I'm always careful around her, so she doesn't fall down or anything. So when you today you pushed your dad, he fell. What did your mom do? >> Because you know I felt like I was being attacked >> and he fell back and knocked her down. >> So So if I'm your dad's at me, he swings at you. You pushed him, right? Or you ducked and then you kind of pushed him. Did he? I saw a bruise on your right forearm and I don't know what that's from. Is that Is that Did you try to block him? That one right there. Is that something you tried to block him or then you had a mark right here? I don't know if you remember. I mean, did you do this? Did you duck? Did you tell me what happened there? Yeah, I do remember trying to >> So, one of those bruises maybe >> from when your dad swung at you, right? >> Could be. It just, you know, it happened so fast. >> Okay. And I understand that. I don't want you to guess either. Um, so then you say that you you you pushed your dad. What did your your mom was behind your dad? >> Yeah. And then it knocked into both of them >> because because she was the one screaming that kid in my in my face and I he like tried to intervene to I think protect her whether she was right or not. It's like why am I getting screamed at? >> Does mom and dad fall down when you push dad? Dad fell into mom. Mom fell down. Well, I'll tell you. Um, yeah, I'm Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what happened. But what I was going to say was tell admit to, you know, some um destruction of property or whatever, but >> okay. >> Well, you know, I don't really want to admit to it right now. I don't think you believe me at all, but if you look at the history, >> you've given me no reason to not believe, you've given me more reason to >> explain to you that if you look at the history, they've gotten away with this, >> right? >> And that's what I'm trying to say >> over and over. >> Well, don't let him get away with it now. >> He He's in bad shape. >> Okay, he's got a lot of injuries that are internal that it's it's, you know, I I pray to God that it doesn't happen. But so that's going to tell the story. Again, not to keep repeating ourselves, but we've >> Well, I don't really think that I'm the cause of any serious injury. >> Well, then tell me how he got those injuries. >> No idea. >> Your dad the aggressor today. I feel that he was and I believe he was trying to strike me but but only to like show off in front of my mom. >> Okay. >> I don't believe he like hates me. I think he he's so scared of my mom that or you know of getting divorce or whatever >> that that's why he attacked me. Okay. >> There definitely was some self-defense on my part. >> Okay. >> Definitely. >> Okay. And I believe that from your story, but I I don't know what what happened next. And that's all I'm trying to get at is your dad tried to hit you, you reacted because you've been a a victim for 43 years or however old you are. I apologize for not knowing that, but you've been a victim for a long time. Okay, your dad takes a swing at you, you block it, you push him, and then we don't know what happens. And you know, I might I probably didn't even push him. It's just that because he's had so many back surgeries or whatever >> and I blocked and >> he fell. I don't even think I pushed him. He just fell and knocked my mom down. >> Okay. >> And then what happened after that? Something happened. Okay. All right. Well, we'll give you a few to think about it. Okay. We'll come back and we'll we'll see if if you're wanting to talk at that point. Okay. Does that sound good? >> I don't know, man. You guys just doing your job. >> Before being transported to jail, Curtis indicated he was not done and requested to continue speaking with investigators. As a result, one of the investigators reinitiated contact with him in the interview room. So Nick in and out. >> Um, we're now going to transport you from here. We're going to go take you to county jail. >> I didn't get a chance to get my statement. I wanted to talk to the detective. >> Those are the guys that were in here. >> What happened? >> They talked. >> Yeah. They said they were going to come back and talk to me. I need to give my my statement. I'm willing to talk to them and tell them what happened. >> Grab one real quick. Let me grab one real quick for you. >> What's going on, K? >> What's up? Are you wanting to talk about today with me? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Are you fine talking again like we talked about earlier? Just you and me? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, what happened today? >> And I'm sorry for like delaying or >> No, you're fine, man. Whatever. >> You had a lot to to get off your chest and that's fine. >> But yeah, I just I just kept thinking about the past and I was distracted in my mind. >> It's fine. It's fine. You've been through a lot. Okay. You've got four decades worth of that's just built up, right? >> Am I right? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, do you think all that pent up? >> I just wanted to make sure you know I wasn't saying the wrong thing. No. >> And I know that it's crazy how in the past it's like I didn't get even a chance to talk. >> Sure. >> Like even when I called the cops on my friend Dave for chicken Mhm. >> And I said, "I'm not willing to give a statement right now." And then they I never got a chance to take a statement. >> Well, like I told you before, I was giving you a bit to to think and process. So, >> all right. So, what happened? So, you came back from the store. Mom's yelling at you. >> She's all up in your face, right? >> Yeah. And after my dad um like charged at me >> swung at me because >> he was yelling and I raised my voice. Okay. >> And it was like in the doorway in front of the bathroom in between the living room and the um kitchen. >> Mhm. >> And he actually was like swinging at me >> like with both arms. One arm. >> With his right arm. >> With his right arm. Okay. How many times do you think >> just once? >> Okay. >> And um he was in he was in close range. I kind of moved and just walked like this and my mom was right behind me because she was like trying to charge at me. >> So she was behind you too or she was >> she was behind him. >> Okay. Like trying to charge me >> and then so he knocked her down. How did he knock her down? >> Well, I I just put my arm up like this when he was coming at me and >> I didn't like push. I just went like this. >> Okay. >> To block and >> and that kind of caused him to fall backwards. >> I don't know. He kind of got scared like he thought I was going to hit him or something. >> Okay. >> He moved back and she was right behind him. And then um it's like we're in the middle of an argument and I still wanted to like make my point of what I was saying, you know, I'm trying to just explain something to them. >> Sure. And I don't remember exactly what it was, but um she I don't think she fell down all the way at that point because normally she would need help up and she got up and my dad >> was still like coming at me and she was she seemed even more aggressive screaming, stuff like that. >> Okay. >> And I grabbed the TV set, >> like the actual TV or the stand? >> The actual TV. Big ass TV. It's like this big or whatever. >> Okay. >> Just to create a barrier. >> Sure. >> Just to just to make sure there was no physical altercation between us because >> I was I was kind of scared of what was happening. and he him and her were both stealing uh >> running after me. >> Okay. >> Like I mean weren't that far apart. They were coming at me and I didn't push or throw the TV or anything, >> but I was just holding it >> and just >> I don't know how >> but just I think he slipped on >> um pile of papers and cuz they in between the two recliners right across from the TV. >> Okay. >> They just throw the junk mail on the floor. >> Sure. >> And it's right there. So somehow he fell >> and knocked her down again. Mhm. >> And the TV fell on him. Might have hit his head and then he was like trying to throw probably just pushed the TV off of him. >> Mhm. >> But I felt like he was trying to throw the TV at me. >> Okay. >> He yelled, "You son." And I pushed the recliner just to re block the TV. >> Mhm. >> And that kind of pushed the TV back into his face or head >> and kind of landed on like my mom's side TV went back at them, but I didn't like push the te, you know, all I did was grab the back of the recliner >> and go like this. >> Okay. >> And I'm thinking that's a safe soft barrier. >> Sure. >> They can't see, but he was like trying to throw the TV off of him >> or whatever. >> Okay. Cuz the first time I went outside, I was just standing there and there was like this black lady and this other lady and I think there were the neighbors or neighbors relatives or something. I never seen them before. >> Okay. >> And I said, "Sorry about this, you guys. I'm sorry. You know, thank you. Please call 911." >> Okay. >> And I went back in the house um to check on my parents. >> Okay. They still seem kind of like like um cuz like while the whole thing was happening, my mom yelled um he's trying to kill us. >> Your mom yelled that? >> Yeah. >> About you? >> Yeah. And that really pissed me off. And I was like, "Shut the up. Don't say that." >> And I punched the TV. >> Where was the TV? It was after it the TV had already um after I had already picked it up. >> Mhm. >> And they were running at me and my dad fell and TV fell on him or it was like as that was happening. >> Mhm. >> But I didn't punch it at them or anything. >> Okay. After all these years and all the things they did to me, my my mom said to the police >> Mhm. >> came to my house before that I would never hurt them. Did you hurt him today? >> They might have gotten hurt. >> How How did they get hurt? >> Inadvertently >> How did they inadvertently get get hurt? I'm not sure but the TV kind of fell on a couple times. It all happened so fast and I was just thinking about it and like >> what about the lamp? How did the lamp come into play? The >> lamp? I have no idea. Now that you bring it up, I'm not going to deny anything about the lamp as far as grabbing throwing it, but I don't I don't >> Did you grab it or throw it? >> I don't remember anything about >> But you do remember collecting the lamp and picking it up in some fashion. >> No, I'm just saying I'm not going to deny it. I feel like there's so much stuff I want to say to them. It's just going to start a fight. Sure. Like, do you talk to your friends this way? Like, I'm the only one I feel like I'm the only one they're going to treat like because they can >> get away with it or whatever. It's not It's just not fair to me. >> I agree. Well, um, you know my name, so if later on you want to talk more and stuff like that, feel free to reach out. I know my partner said that he's willing to talk to you at a later time about everything else from your childhood. >> Can you write? Can you write? >> Yeah, I can write them. I'm not fancy enough to have cards. So, >> not fancy enough. >> No, not fancy enough. Not >> your hair. Your hair looks fancy enough. Thank you. It's the first time I've done my hair in 20 years. >> Does it looks nice and >> I appreciate that. >> You know, >> so that's me and that's the non-emergency number to PD. So if you want to call, you can tell your partner. >> Yeah. >> Is that a wedding band? >> Yeah. And I will also write down the same phone number for him because I don't know his office phone number. But that's our non-emergency number. Um you can reach out to them to get in contact with us and uh we can talk some more if you want. All right. >> I want to say you said Chris. >> Yes. >> Chris. Okay. Well, >> there's a lot there's a lot of Chrises, so >> I got that right. Following the interview, Curtis Wayne Berberick was transported to the Walkershaw County Jail.
