Stupid [ __ ] I'm going to [ __ ] kill you! I hope she knows when I come back she's going to die. On February 21st, around 10:00 a.m., 17-year-old Brendan J. Depa attacked a teacher's aide in the hallway of Matanzas High School in Florida. Security cameras captured the student knocking the aide to the ground and continuing the assault. Early reports suggested the incident was related to a confiscated Nintendo Switch, but the victim later stated she had never taken a console and that the attack appeared to be unprovoked. Body cam footage released by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office shows the aftermath of the incident, including the suspect spitting toward the victim and making threats after the attack. Brendan, what happened? Expelled me. Okay. Well, do Can you put your computer down for a second? Please. Brendan, please. Stand up for me. Put your hands behind your back. Turn around. Turn the other way. Stay right there. Got him. Mhm. Okay. I'm going to take your watch off. You'll get it back. That way it doesn't pinch you. Brendan, your watch is going in your pocket, okay? Well, Brendan, look at me. Look at me. >> more important places to >> I I I understand. You're getting so manhandled in this Nobody's Nobody's manhandling you, Brendan. Med unit's on the way. Are they going to handcuff me? We're going to This one. We're going to go to the hospital? >> Hey. Stop. Stupid [ __ ] I'm going to [ __ ] KILL YOU. I HOPE SHE KNOWS when I come back she's going to die. I just came in for a video. And uh I'll call I'll call for a unit. I'll call Sarge to let him know what's going on. Okay. As deputies prepare to transport Brandon to the station, he becomes increasingly nervous and begins asking numerous questions. Rather than showing remorse, he appears more frustrated about the situation and the consequences he's facing. Mr. Terrell, will you sit with Deputy King, please? Yeah. How long am I leaving for? I don't know. How long do they usually leave for? Don't know. What do you mean you don't know? It's up to the judge what he wants to do with you. What judge? The one that you're going to be seeing. When? When do I get to see the judge? When everything gets done here. Do I get to see them today? >> I don't know. How long does it take? I have to type up the complaints. We have to send them in. Then you're going to go down to jail. They're going to process you and depending on what they want to do with you. Can I be sent home? No. What's his last name? I don't know. Uh um What's your last name? Gaffney. How do you spell it? G a f f n e Brandon? Brendan. Brendan. Here, Novac. I don't want to go. I want to go home. Well, How long will it be? I want to know. What do you want to know, Brendan? I don't want to be in there. Well, how long am I going to be in there? Do you Can Can you give me like an estimate? It all depends, I said. What do you mean depends? The judge will make the determination if he's going to release you to your parents or keep you at DJJ. Will he release me to my parents? Well, either put you in your parents' custody or keep you in jail. My parents aren't going to take me back. >> Well, I don't know what to tell you then, bud. Will Will my parents be there? Where? At the judge court. Will they be there, my parents? >> Probably going to have to be there, yes. They won't take me back. I got Basically, she took a switch away, like a Nintendo game system, and he decided that he should beat her up. Threatened to kill her, too. What's the longest time What's the longest time they can put me in there? I have no idea. For battery. I don't know. I'm not the judge. Why aren't you a police officer? >> I'm a police officer. I don't make the rules. What I'm on duty 24/7. can you tell me? Can I tell you what? Like how long I can be in there. Can I go back to my group home? Mhm, not right now, you're not. Can I Will they Can they make the decision at the judge to make me go back to my group home? I don't know what they're going to do. Can the Can my parents say that? It's going to be totally up to the judge what he's going to do. So, basically, he's looking at this might be a felony. So, if it's a felony, they might keep you in the jail. For how long? Until your court date, I guess. And then what do they say at court? >> Then you'll go to court, and then they'll decide if, you know, they're going to release you to your parents or not. But they won't release me to my parents. >> Why? Cuz my parents have explicitly said that they don't want me back. Okay, so where are you living at now? In a group home. >> Okay. So, then they'll decide if you're going to go back there or not. Oh, okay. I don't know. That part is not dealing with us. I make the complaint, I do the charges, I send it up. That's the judge's decision, not my decision. I didn't mean to say I'd kill her. That's exactly what you said. I know, but when I get angry, I say irrational things, and then the judge is going to use that. You're probably right. I tell the judge that I didn't mean what I said? I'm sure you'll be able to tell your the judge whatever you want to say. I want to No, I've never been through your brain. No, that was what I wanted to do cuz I was mad. I'll walk you out to the car. I'll get you your shoe. I'll get it. I'll get it. >> [snorts] >> You all right? Just step to the side for me for a second. Can I get Still have you watching me, partner? Yeah. Is this your wallet, too? Yes. Don't take my wallet. >> it. I'm not taking it. Just relax, okay? I'm putting you in this deputy's car. We're going to put all your stuff in an envelope. Hey, hey, hey. Stop. Stop. You're going to get all your stuff. We're going to I'm going to put it in an envelope, all right? Don't make your situation any worse than it is, okay? I'm dead. What? I'm dead. But you're good Watch your head, okay? Watch your head. Watch your head. Watch your head. You might want to slide in. Slide sideways. Watch your leg. Watch your knee there. >> There you go. His wallet and his watch. It works. Oh. Okay, thank you. Yeah, go ahead. Yes. Yes. You still rolling? Shutting off for discussion. In August of 2024, Brandon was sentenced to 5 years in prison, followed by 15 years of probation. During the proceedings, Judge Terrence Perkins stated he had not heard Brandon express remorse at any time. Following the incident, 59-year-old Joan Nadich, who suffered five broken ribs and a concussion, later gave an interview to the New York Post criticizing the school board's lack of support [music] in the events leading up to the attack. Like Like to think that they left me for dead. They let him come at me multiple times. They didn't render me any aid, any protection. Flagstaff schools and Flagstaff County sheriffs failed me that day. A GoFundMe for Joan, who's since been recovering from the attack, has raised over $140,000.
