The suspect was later identified as Michael Stowers, a man recently released after serving time for a previous murder. Police say he shot and killed his pregnant wife inside her St. Paul apartment before fleeing the scene, but it didn't end there. Moments later he allegedly shot another man during a carjacking and disappeared, triggering a citywide manhunt. When officers finally located Stowers, he was riding a bicycle and reportedly pulled a gun pointing it at them. Stowers didn't survive the encounter. He was shot and later died. As news of the incident quickly spread, attention soon turned to the two officers involved and whether their actions were truly justified. Michael Alan Stowers is now the subject of a nationwide manhunt on the run after killing his pregnant ex-wife and carjacking someone. This comes just months after he was released from prison. In 2008 Stowers was arrested for second-degree murder after a shooting at a St. Paul restaurant left one man dead. Stowers was sent to prison and spent 16 years there before being released earlier this year for work release. This manhunt comes after the events of this past Saturday night. Court documents say officers responded to a home on Sycamore Street that night around 9:00 p.m. for reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they spoke to neighbors who said they thought they heard gunshots in apartment three. Inside that apartment, officers noted gun residue in the air and found a woman identified as Demara Stowers lying on the floor of the spare bedroom. Medics pronounced her dead on scene. Also inside that apartment, officers found ultrasound photos. That woman was pregnant. Speaking to neighbors that night, officers got roughly the same description, a heavy-set black man in his 30s or 40s running from the home. Officers also responded to a carjacking nearby on Acker. Surveillance video shows a man with a similar description to Stowers walk up to that driver, shoot him, and then steal his car. An employee with the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office received a call from Stowers that same night saying he had shot someone and wanted to turn himself in. To date, he has not done that. >> tonight with new breaking details after a deadly shooting by officers in St. Paul. Police now say it was a tip about a suspect in a murder investigation that led to the deadly confrontation. Our Frankie Magliser is live in St. Paul tonight with the latest. Frankie, what can you tell us? Yeah, Derek, good evening to you. A violent night over here at a portion of St. Paul. In press that press briefing tonight from St. Paul police really opening up a possibility and a conversation that this situation could actually be tied to another situation that happened a little over 2 weeks ago. St. Paul police say that an anonymous tip about a murder suspect led them to a laundromat here in the West 7th Fort Road neighborhood. The tipster said accused killer Michael Stowers was on a bike at the laundromat. Officers arrived in the area but did not approach directly. Instead, um a couple officers tried to determine if he was inside the business or not. And while officers were waiting nearby to confirm that tip, a man approached them on a bicycle and that's when they say the tipster called back saying it was Stowers on a bike. >> When police confronted the man, officers saw he had a gun and fired at him. It's unclear if the suspect pointed the weapon at them at this time, but police say there is video of the incident. >> captured by neighbors shows the aftermath on the street with the body of Stowers lying where the deadly confrontation ended. All officers involved in this incident were wearing body cameras that were activated. This video, along with other evidence, will be part of the BCA investigation. What if my wife would have been walking with my son at that time and a stray bullet from what happened hit her? After he says his brother witnessed the man being shot on his bicycle. Then he just heard pop, pop, pop. And then turned and saw the man on the bike fall off the bike and the blood. Yeah, and those officers that were involved in today's situation do actually remain in administrative leave, which for your information is just standard protocol with a situation of this such. Um we are here in front of St. Paul um police headquarters, but they are saying that the BCA is the um agency that will be taking over the investigation of this situation. Right here on the St. Paul side, Frankie Magliser for WCCO News. >> After the investigation, authorities determined the officers' actions were justified, concluding they acted to protect themselves and others from imminent danger. The review included body cam footage, surveillance video, and witness statements, all confirming that Stowers pointed a gun at officers before the shooting. Ultimately, the officers were cleared of any wrongdoing and the case serves as a stark reminder of how quickly dangerous situations can escalate, putting both civilians and law enforcement at risk.
