Let's start getting bag over there. >> Despite his condition, standard protocol required officers to secure his hands while medical aid was called. >> You need another one. >> Everybody okay? >> Yeah, we're good. Hey, this Buick is the one that was he was driving. >> I don't think he kept driving. The officers then inspected the car Jaylen was driving to determine if there was another accomplice or to find out what had happened to the vehicle. >> I don't see nothing. >> I'm on me. >> I'm on you. >> Watch. Watch crossfire. >> Okay. I'm going to your side. 11. We need the 32 and clear. Police started asking people nearby if they saw anything, looking for anyone who could explain what happened in those moments. >> You guys uh see anything? >> So, did you guys see anything by luck with you guys? You see right there? >> I was wondering you guys saw >> No, we just saw the car come and you guys uh try to cut him off and he took off and then I heard a bunch of bullets. Where did she stay at? >> Around the corner. >> Did you hear anything? See anything? >> I know, bro. I just saw the police. I'm like, what the going on? >> Okay, cool. >> What happened? >> I don't know all that happened. >> Oh, you just got here, too? >> Yeah, but that's why I'm doing this right now. Okay. >> What's your name, sir? Huh? >> What's your name? >> News organizations across the country began reporting on the shooting. As questions mounted about what happened the night Jaylen Walker died. In an interview with Three News titled, "Why did this happen?" His mother Pamela Walker and his sister Jada Walker expressed their pain and confusion over what happened. Why did this happen and in such a manner such a terrible terrible way? I'm sick as a mother that it came to that. If they would have spent five minutes with him, it would never have ended that way. >> People in Akran protested, demanding answers and justice for Jaylen Walker. WHY WOULD Y'ALL DO THIS? THAT'S ALL I WANT TO KNOW. THAT'S ALL WE WANT TO KNOW. >> We have no justice and then call for peace. It does not make sense. We must have justice in order to have peace. >> Activist Tama Mallerie joined the demonstrations calling for accountability from the police and authorities over his death. real cause of the problem which is whitey running rampant in this nation and the racism towards black young African-Americans old African-Ameans women because one thing we know for sure we can't say only white could be any one of us people know that that's not true but the one thing that is in common is that the victims are almost always black people you tell the story National outlets also reported statements from the Walker family's attorney, Bobby Dichello, who questioned claims about a shot being fired from Jaylen's car and raised concerns about the physical evidence recovered from the vehicle. >> My client fled on foot and was shot at over 90 times and hit over 60 times. He was not a criminal. He was not a thug. He was not someone who deserved any of what happened to him. I know the preliminary autopsy report specifies that the gun is found in the back seat. The picture that you're showing right now is a picture of the gun on the front seat. As he's leaving the passenger side, if the gun is in the back seat and as he is leaving the back the side, he would have had to position all of these items. He would have had to reach into the back seat, position them, and make it look just like we see there. And so it raises many questions. In the end, the eight officers involved in the shooting were not charged after a grand jury concluded they acted within the law. Officers found a handgun, a loaded magazine, and his wedding ring on the driver's seat, meaning he was unarmed when he got out of the car and when police opened fire. But Walker's family strongly questioned the police version, saying the photo of the gun looked staged. In October 2024, Akran approved a $4.85 $85 million settlement with Walker's family and later revised its pursuit policies. If you like content like this, please like and subscribe.
