On December 22nd, 2023, a woman in Florida stole over $2,000 worth of designer purses from Saks Fifth Avenue by using an empty shopping bag. She was observed by an employee placing purses into the bag, removing price tags, and heading for the exit. Security was alerted, and she was caught outside the store before she could leave. For what? For food? Yes, you were supposed to go to arraignment back in November for a charge of uh obtaining food by means of the fraud. Oh, she dropped the charges on me. We spoke to the officer. And the officer dropped the charges. You missed your arraignment, they put out a failure to appear in the county in Palm Beach County. Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. The officer arrived shortly after being informed of the theft. The employee recounted how the woman had concealed the purses in her bag and removed price tags. The officer read the Miranda rights to the woman, who admitted to stealing the items, explaining it was an act of stupidity. She confessed she entered the store with the intent to shop, but ended up stealing the purses. All right, you're good. You're good. Here, you're good to I'm good to go? Yeah, thank you. Hi, how are you doing, sir? Doing good. What's going on? Not much. They having some fun over in the mall, apparently. All of a sudden. Big fight. Is that what happened? Yeah. That's not good. No, but it is what it is. All right. Can I talk to you first? Yes, sir. Uh what you what you see? So, um I was on the sales floor and one of my associates called me. And he's like, "Hey, I think this lady's shoplifting." So, I'm like, "Okay." So, she had sunglasses on. She had an empty bag, Saks bag. So, I sat there and watched her, and I didn't I didn't see the first initial um selection which she which my men's man uh my men's associate actually saw, but I kept on following her and I was on the sales floor. Okay. And I kept on just and she selected off the back wall, stuck a purse in, went, selected again. Grabbed the This was the first the first purse off the back wall, stuck it inside the bag. Okay. Went to another fixture. This is what she had already concealed in this bag, went to another fixture, picked this up. So, you saw what the other two purses? Um all three purses. Okay, three purses. Yeah, three purses. And she walked around cosmetics and stuff like that. Did you put any of the testers or anything like that in your purse? No. No, you can check. No, no, no, it's fine. Well, I'm going to have to check stuff. Yeah, you're going to have to search her in a minute. And then she walked through ladies' shoes. She popped off all the tickets right there in ladies' shoes, and then walked through men's, placed the tickets in um a shirt, and then went ahead and walked out. That's where I went ahead and I I ended up there. Okay, so she did walk out. Oh, yeah. Past all points, um both doors. So, it was So, what all did was taken? So, I have Cuz I'm going to need at least like a uh gift receipt or something showing the prices of the Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's fine. Actually, I can But three purses? Um three purses and a shirt. And a shirt? Yes, sir. Yeah, just cuz I need to know the total. Yep, you got it. Okay. I know you already said what you said, but I'm going to read these to you, okay? Do you understand those rights as I as I read them to you? Yes. Do you still wish to talk to me? Um No, officer, I can't. Stupidity, really. Okay. I'm so embarrassed. And your intent today was to come in and shoplift? Was to shoplift, yes. Okay. Okay. So, I've never shoplifted before. This is my first time. Okay. So, what I'm going to go through here, make sure there's no no more other stuff in here. I don't want it searched. You have consent. Well, I don't need your consent at this point just because I understand. Upon further investigation, the officer discovered that the woman had an outstanding warrant for her arrest related to a previous charge of defrauding an innkeeper. She had failed to attend a court date for this charge, which led to the warrant being issued. The woman tried to explain that the charges had been dropped after paying for the food, but the officer clarified that the failure to attend court resulted in the warrant still being valid. That's her. Okay. And Blanca, right? All right. So, I'm going to be honest with you right now, okay? You are under arrest right now. Yes. You are under arrest right now. She said I could go home. No, I said he's either going to give you an NTA or he's going to Well, you would be getting an NTA today. But you have a warrant out for your arrest right now for failure to appear to arraignment for defrauding defrauding an innkeeper uh for food. What? For what? Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. So, because you did not go to that court date that arraignment, they put a warrant out. A warrant out? Okay. So, Cuz I just spoke to the officer and the lady from the food you know, from the Chinese buffet, and I spoke to the officer, and she said, "I want to drop the charges because I did pay, and I have all the proof." Yeah, but the issue is is because you missed that arraignment. Okay. Oh, okay. And you missed that that initial court order order, they put out a failure to appear. Okay. As the stolen purses exceeded $750 in value, the theft was classified as felony grand theft. The woman was arrested and informed that she would be taken to jail regardless of the status of the outstanding warrant. I'm not going to put you in cuffs just yet, okay? Because I have to wait for them to confirm that it's actually still a valid warrant. Okay? If they come back and tell me no, it's not a valid warrant anymore, we will uh we'll go ahead and we'll just, you know, we'll bring you downstairs uh to my vehicle, we'll do some paperwork real quick, and I'll cut you loose with a notice to appear. Okay, sir. Okay. I appreciate that. So, I'm being up front with you, being honest with you, but it all depends on if uh That warrant. Yeah, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office comes back and tells me, you know, yes or no, the warrant's good. Okay? Fantastic deal, officer. What was the total amount? Um total amount Let me see. It's 2,000 Let me see. The total is um So, actually, no. There's not going to be an NTA because that's felony amount. Cuz it's over $750. Okay? What does that mean, officer? That means that you have to go down to the county jail. Whether or not this warrant comes back as a good warrant. So, cuffs off you. All right, I'm going to go ahead and put your DL in here for now, okay? Yeah. All right, go ahead and stand up, please. Go ahead and put your hands behind your back. It's easier if you're if you place them palms together like you're praying. Like this? Yeah. It's jacket. I'm sorry. You're fine. Okay, any of your jewelry that you have we'll put in your in your purse, okay? Okay. I'm going to give you um a copy of your civil demand. The law office will contact you. This is my card. We don't actually take that. Can I put it in my Can I put Yeah, you can put it in there. Thank you. You're all set. I'm going to make sure that these are locked. I'm sorry, just bring your arms out. Okay. Okay. Here you go. Her actions, combined with the warrant, meant she was facing serious consequences. The total value of the stolen items was $2,000, and because of this, she would be charged with felony grand theft.
