And then that's when he ran into the garage leader >> and I said, "Let him nowhere for him to go." >> Okay. And then so we came out. That was all the same guy that you saw pretty much. Okay. And you seen him run in the bushes and run in the >> jumping. >> What else did you see him do? >> Stand up. >> He got I think he got head like in the face. >> But I mean at least I mean he's okay. He's conscious >> right now. So >> we'll get you a wheelchair. That way you don't got to walk. You're shackled right now, so it's going to be hard to walk. >> You got to cooperate with us. Okay. >> Hey, >> bro. Do not >> Okay. >> Okay. We're at Queens now. I got to turn my camera off. Hip. The officer suffered fractures [music] to his face and eye as well as a serious closed head injury. For privacy reasons, we cannot go into [music] the specifics of this officer's medical treatment, but for many officers, concussions, closed head injuries, or eye injuries result in a permanent retirement from the profession due to the substantial physical requirements of the job. Court records indicate the suspect was charged with first-degree assault, which carries a sentence up to 10 years. The defendant refused plea deals and insisted on a jury trial. However, the day the jury was seated, [music] the suspect took a plea deal. Hawaii prison records indicate he is no longer incarcerated, [music] indicating his total time served was less than 2 years. Some hits don't just land on your body, they land on your entire soul. Any cop who's ever been assaulted on the job knows exactly what I mean. And getting assaulted on this job isn't some abstract danger they wonder about in the academy. It's a reality that shows up fast, violent, and personal. Now, I've had the wind knocked out of me on this job, but thank goodness I stayed conscious. However, not everyone gets that outcome. Sometimes the impact is so violent, your legs just betray you, and the only thing you can hold on to is the hope that backup gets to you before everything goes dark. You don't choose to stay down. Your body decides for you. And that's the reality this job forces on you without warning. So, when we watch an officer take a blow to the head so violent that his legs just fold under him, you're not just seeing a fall. You're actually seeing the moment his body [music] shuts down before his mind can catch up. You can almost sense the confusion in the way he tries to move. The instinct to fight clashing with his body that suddenly won't cooperate. Your instincts tell you to get up, but the body says you're done. And that mismatch creates a kind of situation no camera can capture. Now, honestly, this was a tough video for me because I've been here. And what makes a hit different is knowing that the injured officer's world just split into two realities. The one he trained for and the one his body can no longer meet. Because there's a point in this job where you stop thinking about the injury and start thinking about what comes after. You got MRIs and possible surgeries and hours in a dark room wondering if the pain will ever stop long after everything fades and the paperwork's done. The truth is this. This officer's future was stolen from him. And that doesn't just go away. It haunts you in the quiet moments.
