His internal body temperature dropped 2 degrees. I'm not using Chelsea DCS is Chelsea, your speech is slurred. You're not steady on your feet. You have pot marks on your tongue. You have several indicators that are consistent with somebody who's recently used. All right, I'm going to be straight up with you. You did a hit-and-run. There was a child inside. Um, you're going to get hooked for uh No, my daughter's upstairs. And I hope that you know in the morning when you're dealing with my body that this you could have just stopped. Tough cops see it all while out on patrol. Thieves, intoxicated drivers, even murders. But they're most affected when bad people drag innocent children into their schemes. That's when savior mode kicks in, making officers determined and relentless. Even if for a moment, they turn pale when they catch evil mothers on body cam. No, sir, you are under arrest. Put that I stole? When did I steal? Where? How did I steal? You guys don't have to walk out with the merchandise. I don't know. How did I steal? >> [music] >> Ma'am, hang up the phone, please. Huh? Can you hang up the phone, please? Why? So I can talk with you. So I guess you and another male ran out the store. You guys were trying to take something or what? >> No, nobody did take nothing. Okay, were they trying to talk to you? He was talking to me. He let me go. He got everything back. It wasn't even nothing but a hat. It was a Carhartt hat. Sorry. Okay, where where is uh is that boyfriend, husband? He didn't take nothing. He did. Where is he at? Hold on. Yes. Ma'am, one more time, hang the phone up. Yes. Until we figure this out, all right? [crying] Yeah, okay, cool. Do you have a car here? Yes. Where's your car at? It's It's coming. Sit down. Okay. Is it the male that who took the car? He took the car and left. He didn't take like the alcohol. Okay, but he took the car and left you guys. Is that right? Yeah. No. I was in there shopping. He went to go get something. So, that was it. That's all that happened. The officer asked the woman for her ID, but it was in her bag inside the car, which the male suspect, Mr. Wood, had driven off in. A few minutes later, he returned to the parking lot. He looked tense, and without being asked, immediately started talking with the same line officers had heard a thousand times. I ain't stealing. Okay, that's cool. I'm just going to We're going to have a conversation. >> What you got to have a conversation for? >> I know you're being detained for a theft investigation. I'm being detained Hey, yes, you are. All right? So, did you just park the car? Uh All right. Well, I need you guys to be on your way. All right? We tried to pay for the They didn't want to let us pay for it. Hey, what happened? Okay, I'm talking to you. Hey, what happened? They trying to say I stole. I ain't steal. That's all that matters. I ain't steal nothing. The store staff, however, had a completely different version of events. An employee told the police that the male suspect had selected all the merchandise while the woman concealed it inside the baby stroller. He observed the pair during their entire operation. I checked them out right there in men's. Started watching them. Looked like they're concealing underneath the baby. Long story short, they did. Went to stop him. We stopped her. Stopped her with backup. Went in He came back and for you know what, I'm not hostile. He going, "I'll just strip right here. I ain't got nothing on me." A word I'm not going to say. Stuff like that. Okay. So, once we got like right here, she's going to This pulls everything out. Cuz she's going to go and ditch it, and I'm like, "No, you got to keep coming with me." She's like, "I got to grab something else." I'm like, "No, no, no, come on." Finally, once we got right there, she's going to This pulls everything out, walked out the door. The female suspect gave a different story. She tried to play it off as though nothing serious had happened, and unsurprisingly, defended herself and Mr. Wood. She even pulled the race card. Brief summary. So, what's going on? Why are we here? The hat Well, we tried to buy it, but he act like we couldn't buy it. He said police was here. And all night he was trying to say no racist stuff, but he looked like he was running up, you know, we black. So, he wanted us to say I guess he wanted us to not pay you, just talk to y'all. Okay, so you guys had a hat where you And you said you were planning on paying it? Yeah, Cohart the Cohart hat. I don't know if you know what it is, but it's Cohart. Cohart, yeah. Put it back. He He got it. Okay. Did you guys have a card or anything, or were you just Cash. Cash. Okay. Like credit card, debit card, that's what I'm saying. Oh, yeah. Okay. So, you guys had a grocery card or whatever. I was going to I was going to shop. They ain't got nothing I see. I'm like I said that something. Both suspects denied concealing any merchandise and claimed it was just a couple of hats they were planning to pay for at the register, but the store's cameras told a very different story. So, those two are together? Yes, these two. She's the one that committed the theft. She walked out with it. He was just selecting merchandise with her. But we picked them up and they were way back here. So, it's like jeans, the hoodie. There's some other things I can't remember off the top of my head. Jeans, hoodie that they put back, their white shirt, black jeans, two hats. I think that I believe that's it. Okay. It was a total of 118.76. Yep. What is she selecting there? Uh she was just concealing merchandise with the All right, can you show me that again? >> Yep. See concealing the merchandise in there. And then just conceal it like that. Fortunately, all the merchandise was rediscovered. The store's management wanted to press charges against both suspects. Officers had full grounds to act and started with the male suspect. You get up so I can pat you down. No. No, you're not. >> me down for it. We're going to make sure that you didn't steal anything. I asked him did he want me to strip naked he told me no I was good. I'm asking you. No. So you asking me to search me because you feel like I stole something. Let's just pat you down. I'm not going to search you. I told this man let me Got it. Can I put the potato chips in the back? What? Am I being detained? Am I being detained? No, sir. You are under arrest. >> For what? For theft. I stole? When did I steal? Where? How did I steal? >> don't have to walk out with the merchandise. >> I don't understand. How did I steal? We're going to go over all of that. >> Hold on. Hold on. Did I just steal when I ain't have it? Bro, what? How did I steal? >> also not free to go, okay? All right? Don't drive off. All right? He's going to go in the back of the car. I'm going to pull up the cruiser, okay? >> just said I stole. How the [ __ ] did I steal? >> as of right now. So do not drive off. Do you understand? Mr. Randy, do you understand? Okay. >> Can I get in the car? Just stay put. Hang tight for me, all right? Mr. Wood gave the usual shoplifter excuse that he had money and didn't need to steal. But the evidence was against him. After he was arrested, officers informed the female suspect what was about to happen to her. Our policy is we usually take you by people who get charged with theft to jail. Okay. We're trying to work with you so you don't go and give you a court date. But I would prefer to get your side of the story a little bit better now, okay? That way we don't have to take him, take you, and your baby needs to be picked up by somebody else. We took a couple items, but put it back. Okay. >> it all. He don't He don't have nothing here. Okay, you took a couple items. Were you planning on paying for them? Yes. He was going to pay for some items. And where did you put those items at that you were planning on paying for? >> He got them. I told you I gave them to him. When you first picked them up, where did you put them at? He had them. Did you put them in a cart? Did you put them in the baby's uh baby carrier? Baby carrier, but we we don't I use it as a cart. And you know, he got he got everything. You put it underneath the baby, on top of the baby? On top. Next, both suspects were trespassed from all Meijer stores. Shoplifting is bad, but shoplifting with your baby is much worse. But instead of being ashamed, Mr. Wood was furious in the patrol car. >> [screaming] >> Can't even be stand up people, bro. What's wrong with this with this Hey! She got caught up trying to pay for this Who got the money? Careful about you getting another charge. Get a charge for what? I ain't destroying nothing. Yeah, you are. Nothing broke. How am I getting another charge? I say you will if you keep it up. Both Mr. Wood and his female accomplice were charged with [music] theft. He was booked and released, while the woman was given a court date. On January 21st, 2024, a child was found wandering the road in freezing temperatures without shoes on. A good Samaritan who drove past and the police about the endangered kid. When the officers arrived, they immediately took care of the little one and talked to the caller. How's it going? It's going. Just freaking cold. I happen to be up in front of these guys when they found him. Actually, I found him. Yeah, he's the one. Yeah. Absolutely. He was playing right here in the parking lot. Oh. Didn't see any adults, man. Well. Thank you for doing the right thing. I'm stopping. Most people just keep driving. It's crazy. That's unfortunately I almost had to uh cut off someone cuz she just The child was found freezing, soaked, with his Crocs taken off. This posed a serious risk to his well-being. The officers had already called an ambulance [music] and paramedics examined the child thoroughly. Oh, little buddy. What's happening? Hey Keith. How old are you? You don't know? Can you show me on your fingers how many how many years old you are? Yeah. Man. Cold. 23, can you go out and see that 7 in the back of the car? Yeah. Hey Keith, is that your silver car out there? That silver car out there, is that your silver car? No. That down there is white car there. The gray car? Yeah. Which one of them? The blue clear. The one right out here? Yes, that's the one. 3-year-old Keith pointed at his mother's car, which was parked nearby. Luckily, there were open documents on the front seat. From them, the officers tried to figure out the mother's address. Got a little Caleb It was nothing. Yeah. Last four. 25 P.D. Attempt to locate a Caleb King Adam Lincoln Edward Boy. Adam Boy. The officers found an address on the documents and immediately headed there. When they knocked, a woman's voice told them to wait while she got dressed. Eventually, the door opened. >> [screaming] >> You don't have to come out. Is Tavia here? No, she's They moved out. Where she's supposed to be? Uh well, she's just moved out last night. They're at the Gosh, I don't even know the address. >> [music] >> Do you want to step in? Um it's the apartment building right adjacent to the historical society. Okay. Do you know which one it is, too? No, don't go up there. All right. All right, guys. Everything okay? We just found Keith walking around downtown Wilmington by the baby. That's my Yeah, that's my grandbaby. >> He's at CMH right now. He's okay, but he was walking around barefoot and it's 9° outside. We didn't know what to do. >> Oh my god, he got out? I guess somebody found him walking downtown. You're welcome to meet him at CMH cuz >> [laughter] >> he doesn't have anybody there right now. He's with the officers, but he I mean, he's okay. He's cold as hell, and we were just trying to figure out what's going on. Yeah, baby. literally like last night was their first night Do they drive the the gray Honda Accord wagon? Okay. >> and last night was their first night in this new apartment. They're not going to be happy when they finish moving. Meanwhile, Keith was admitted to the hospital. Luckily, his condition was stable and he enjoyed the care and attention of the doctors and officers. Only then did his mother, Tavia, finally show up. You can sit down for a second. I'm going to have you stand. Do you have any issues? All right, Tavia. I'm going to read you your rights just for a brief okay? You're not under arrest but I'm going to ask you questions, okay? The officer read Tavia her rights. She hadn't spoken a word until then. The cop explained what had happened and tried to find out if Keith had left the house because of her mother's negligence. I mean, he's only three years old. Is that so Do you have any other kids locked in the house? No, we all went to bed and we made sure the doors were locked and shut but he knows how to unlock doors. Okay. What time did you go to bed? We went to bed at around 1:00. He was already asleep by like 11:00 12:00. You want to sit down while I ask? So, you sure the doors were locked? Yes. Is it a deadbolt? It the second you shut the door all the way, the lock turns over. And he struggles with that door so we should be able to hear him. You mean the second it shuts, it locks? Yeah, the second you shut it if you hear it click and lock. Okay. And it's pretty loud. When I got there this morning, the door was kind of open. Was it Is that how it was or was it already open? I just cracked it for the uh What's so You cracked it before I got there? Yeah, I Well, I got the call from my mom, we jumped up, and we saw that the door was cracked. And while I was grabbing my keys, you were trying to find my keys. >> door was partially open then? Yeah. The officers warned Tabitha that she had to secure the house doors better, so the toddler couldn't just wander off. The officer also told her about the state in which they had found Keith. He was sure that this would get an emotional reaction out of her. Um his clothes were soaking wet, right? He was He was freezing, yeah. He was freezing, his clothes were soaking wet. We brought him in here. They changed his clothes out. His His uh They took his temperature, it was 96.something, so his temperature had dropped 2°. His internal body temperature had dropped 2°. Um he's back there talking and watching TV and stuff now, but he was freezing outside, so um thankfully, somebody was someone driving past saw him. Yeah. So somebody stopped? Well, he also I think somebody stopped. So somebody stopped when they saw a little 3-year-old out on the sidewalk in the street? In the parking spot. So, you know, not only was he outside in the cold, he was outside on road. Like the second or third busiest road we have in town. Even though Tabitha didn't show much emotion, the officers had to warn her that she needed to be much more responsible when raising her son. Then they talked to the grandmother. According to her, the problem wasn't with her or her daughter, it was with Keith himself. I'm not trying to be rude against your daughter or anything, but all of our conversations with her is like she's showed no pain no panic in any of this, and it's just kind of concerning. He does have behavioral issues. Um and he was recently I'm I think she's still waiting on the call from the referral for the behavioral specialist. Okay. Um but he literally We had a doctor's appointment last week because of his behavioral issues. Well, she's [music] got She had behavioral issues as a child, too. Okay. So, this is nothing that I have never dealt with before. Okay. So, >> [music] >> Not new. I mean, again, the thing that gets me the most is she knows there's a history of it and she didn't do anything to prevent any of it last night. I mean, it could have even been putting a chair in front of the door, putting it slightly in the couch or something like that. >> credit for the fact that it has not happened in a very long time. [music] Okay. It's probably been 8 9 months since he's tried to run off out the door. The officers couldn't touch the hearts of either the mother or the grandmother with a heartbreaking story of Keith being found soaking wet and freezing on the road. In fact, they only got a real reaction from Tavia when they told her what charges she was facing. You got the thing is I'm going to I'm going to issue a charge of child endangering and you're going to have to show up to court. I'm not incarcerating you. Okay? Understand that. You are going to get charged. And that's a first-degree misdemeanor. And I'm just going to let you know that I would We will let the prosecutor know that that we will suggest parenting classes and things like that for you and that we would not be opposed to [music] charges being amended, reduced, or or whatever should you complete all of these sort of things that are required of you by the court. I can't promise these things are going to happen, but what I'll say is the police department would not be opposed. Tavia was charged with child endangerment. She had to stay in contact with child protective services to address her parenting issues. We can only hope she learns from this and becomes a more mindful and responsible mother. On June 30th, 2025, police in New Mexico received a call about a dangerous vehicle on the road around 8:00 a.m. A maroon Chevrolet was seen swerving, driving with hazard lights on, and the female driver seemed to be dozing off at the wheel. Police soon intercepted the vehicle. The officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but the driver didn't react. For quite some time, she didn't even seem to realize that a patrol car was behind her. Eventually, she noticed and finally reacted. Hello, can you roll down your windows for me, please? Hello. Hi. How's it going? I'm just getting ready to go to Head Start. You're going to Head Start? Okay. >> to take a nap before the Head Start. Okay. Just got up from sleep. We just woke up. Sorry. You just woke up? >> Yeah, I'm trying to get up to school. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, please. Okay, you know why I stopped you today? Just a little bit of swerving in the start. Well, you had a lot of little swerving and you were called in. Yeah, cuz I'm tired. I was tired. We stayed up pretty late, so I'm trying to get up to school. Why are you driving with your hazards on? Well, because I'm trying to go slow to get there. Well, you're not going slow. You're going fast. I'm going fast? Well, you're passing everybody else. You're swerving. Where are you coming from? From East Wenona. Okay. You guys are coming all the way down here. Okay. The mother had her three children in the car, but from just a short conversation, the officer suspected she might not be sober. And the way she got out of the car only made their suspicions stronger. You got to leave your vape in the car. No. Okay, why don't you walk back over here for me? You're half asleep. >> Yeah, we we live in Española, so the time we come over here driving, and I had a hard time sleeping last night. The kids and everything, just tired. You know those mornings you get up, get the kids ready, we're really late, they have to be at school by 8:00. What time did you leave? >> Uh we left uh 7:00. You left at You left at 7:10, you have to be there by 8:00. 8:00, yeah. Okay. And they go to school and they have to tell the cook to cook for them. So it's already close to about 8:30. 8:30, but I told all the teachers that we're going to be 30 minutes late. So you left at 7:10, it's almost 8:30. Takes you that long to get from Española down here? At least >> 20 minutes. 20 15 minutes. Okay. According to the mother, they had departed at 7:10 a.m. And by the time police stopped them at 8:30, only 20 minutes had passed. Clearly, the suspect had lost all sense of time and her math skills, which only made the officer even more suspicious. Did Did you have anything to drink last night? Did you have anything? You don't drink? Okay. Uh I'm I just asking, have you used anything? Are you under the influence of anything? I'm on my medication. What What type of medications? >> I take those, anti-anxiety, anti-depressants. I have all my prescriptions there in the purse. I can look at them. Okay, so you When was the last time you took oxycodone? It was about 12:00 at night. 12:00 at night? How many did you take? Just one? Okay. Did you take anything else? Nothing else. Okay. So, I'm I'm kind of concerned, okay? A couple reasons, all right? Is one, you were you were called in, like I said, okay? So, other people are on the roadway who are concerned with your driving. Okay. They noticed that you actually had kids in the car, which raised a higher concern. >> Officer coming. Okay. So, speaking with you, your your time your time frame is off. We saw where you were trying to where you were trying to get to. Okay. You have some slurred speech, okay? And you also kind of stumbled getting out of the car here and almost fell over. The officer was already convinced the suspect was under the influence of something. She insisted she'd only taken one oxycodone the night before, which should have already worn off since it only lasts 6 hours in the blood. A sobriety test was needed. So, the officer drove her to a nearby location so her children wouldn't have to witness the test. I want you to use this white line right here as a reference, okay? What I want you to do is I don't want you to place your left foot on the line right where it is already, okay? And then I want you to place your right foot in front of your left foot, okay? On Please. Nine of them? Keep going. We're going to be heading straight onto the airport. Hey, keep going. No, you keep going. I gave you the instructions. 26, that's not going to be it. It's going to be a flatbed. 10-0. 10-4. right foot. Hey, keep keep going. Turn around. You're supposed to be on the line. You're supposed to be on the line. No, direction what you came from. I already told you. No. Okay. The suspect wasn't performing too well in the sobriety test. She swayed around the line and struggled to keep her balance. The officer gave her two exercises, which she failed, but he still gave her a third chance to prove her sobriety. So, for this next test, you're going to lift the foot of your choice, either left or right, either one that you want, okay? You're going to lift it approximately 6 in off the ground. You're going to have your legs straight. You're going to have your toe pointed out to where your foot is flat and parallel to the ground. Looking down at your feet, you're going to count out loud 1,001, 1,002, 1,003, and so on until I tell you to stop. And begin. 1,001 1,002 1,003 Okay, go ahead and stop right there. Okay, walk back this way from me, baby, okay? The officer didn't need to watch anymore. The suspects had failed the sobriety test miserably. He told her to return to the patrol car. Then, together with his partner, he did what any cop would do in this situation. Okay, stop right there for me, okay? Go ahead and turn around, look at the red lights, okay? Go ahead and place your hands in the center of your back, okay? All right, Amy, place on the arrest for driving under the influence right now, okay? You don't have anything on you that's going to poke us, stick us. I noticed you have something in your bra, what is it? What's this? It's a It's a cigarette. You want to tell me? I mean, this is all stuff for my mom with the kids. We'll get that all sorted out. We'll take care of that, okay? Use Go ahead and use that hand. Stand up on the hood of the car. You want to just warn you? All right, Amy, this is going to come up here, okay? Okay, we'll make sure you get your hands behind your back. Go ahead and put your hand behind your back. We'll take care of your kids. The officers assured the suspect they would take care of her children. They patted her down thoroughly. During the search, she revealed that it was not the first time she was arrested, and it wasn't for DUI. Have you ever been arrested before? Uh a long Yeah, maybe, maybe, maybe, but I don't know what it was for. For what? Um domestic violence, so it's been a It's been like 10 years, 12 years. Do you have anything on you that you're not supposed to have? No. Okay. The suspect was placed in the back seat of the patrol car. Then, she contradicted her own story about when she had taken her medication. She admitted she had taken more than one medicine and more recently than she initially claimed. I told the kids that I had my medication 15-20 minutes ago. They want to go play and go swim. Okay, so you you took it early. You took it You took it You just took it right before you drove, huh? >> Yeah, that's right. Okay, you told me if I knew you took it different time, you told me you took it last night, but it wasn't it wasn't lining up. >> Okay, so you took it at 7:30. >> and then I take other medication for my Okay. >> depression. She needs her medicine. >> Okay. Well, I mean, I get it. Like if you if you're injured and you need it or but you can't drive, you know, you're the adult here. You can't You understand the danger you put them in? Yeah, because they wanted toys and this. You know, you try to Okay. The suspect was transported to a lab for a blood test. Then she was taken to jail and charged with driving under the influence and three counts of child abuse, one for each child, and all were listed as felonies. She also faced several petty misdemeanor charges. On July 28th, 2024, police responded to a call regarding an unsupervised child who nearly had a fatal accident. Officers headed toward the address. Upon arrival, they spoke to the neighbors who had rescued the child and kept her safe in their house. What's your name, ma'am? Deputy Cole? Good. And this is my husband, Dave. He's on the porch Okay. I'm not going to say it in front of her. But that pool pool out there, she was in that by herself. I've asked her mother probably knocked on the door. The door was already open. I hollered to them. My husband hollered to them and nobody has come out yet. Okay. So, you know, she was in that pool by herself and I we didn't want to see her I know of friends that their children have condemned just >> Yeah. So, that She didn't have like any like pool gear on or anything? No, she was totally by herself. Mom and them is asleep or something. Okay. I don't know what they're doing. Okay. All right. And this was how long ago? This has been 20 minutes. 20 minutes since then they No one has come to the door. And we checked. Do my ears look up? And the neighbors didn't answer too, so I We didn't want to call, but I said I told David I said look, she was in the pool with the water in it. It takes a split second for a child Yeah. >> because we did knock on her door, gave her an opportunity to come to the door. And then we yelled at them inside the door and nobody still came. I said to me that's a red flag and we're obligated to that child to call. The woman assured the officer that the child had no injuries or symptoms. She had been the one to alert the police about the situation. The officer then spoke to her husband who had discovered the little girl in danger. He shared some details about the child's parents. But that's all we know. Come out the door by herself. The door was standing open and she went out and got in that pool. Yeah. Um And we went over and tried calling, nobody answered, tried calling the phone. Nobody answered. All right. Do you Do you know if it's just one person inside right now? I believe there's two. Yeah, okay. Cuz I I I know the male usually works or does like some sort of landscaping or something like that. Uh he is actually not allowed over there. Oh, it's a different guy? Yeah, he have Yeah, I don't don't know this guy. According to the neighbors, the child's mother had a new boyfriend who was supposed to be in the house as well. The big question was why the two had left the toddler unsupervised and why they didn't respond to the neighbors shouting. Soon the officers asked the mother's boyfriend that very question. What's going on today? Well, it's just far as I see it, it's nothing too bad. I'm just trying We really just walked back out. Usually she's in the house not able to turn the freaking knob, but apparently she just turned the knob and just Okay. Is mom in there as well? Yeah, she's in the You want me to go get her? Yeah. Are you guys usually sleeping at this time? Yeah, yeah, I mean, we ain't doing nothing. It's Sunday. Yeah, I got you. This was not what the guy hoped to wake up to. He and the mother probably intended to sleep for hours if the police hadn't knocked on their door. But with a pool full of water and a toddler wandering near it, sleeping was the most irresponsible thing they could do. Finally, the mother woke up and spoke to the officer. I told the neighbors she's fine. >> [music] >> She's fine. Uh All right, so so what's going on today? Oh, I literally I was just sleeping. Yeah. I was I was sleeping. Did you guys Did you guys have like a long night? Yeah. It is It is 6:00. All right, so the neighbor over there she found her in this pool. It's a little baby pool. And she like opened your door and she said she was hollering for you guys. And you guys must have Where does it Where's the child usually at? Or where do you guys sleep? She's in her own room. And your room's over to the left and she's in the she's in the middle room? No, not in the middle room, in the front. The front room? Yeah. Yeah, we were just sleeping. Uh this is first time she actually done some bull crap like that. [music] How old is she? She just turned three. She just turned three? Yeah. Well, what's her name? Nivea. Nivea? Yeah. The mother and her boyfriend admitted they hadn't heard the neighbor shouting or knocking. The officer asked for their licenses. At least the mother showed some signs of worry, but her concerns weren't for her child's [music] safety. Are we going to be arrested? What's up? Are we going to be arrested? I'm uh This is never This has never ever happened before. I Yeah, I got you. How in the world she open the doors? She never >> what time What time did you guys go to bed? And what was the last time you saw her? Well, we had taken a nap with her. That's why I don't understand like >> Okay, she was sleeping with you guys? >> Usually she would wake me up. This has never ever happened before. She wakes me up and lets me know, "Hey Mommy." You know, she'll let me know if she's hungry or if she You know, she's I'm a very alert mom. So Okay. I was there. How did This has never happened? No, this is She's never walked outside of the house before or anything like [music] that? She The The only one time that she did was 4th of July cuz we were We were at their party. I had came home. We both had came home and I just changed both of our outfits cuz we were both in bathing suits. I had The door was left open like this and she just I mean, I had eyesight of her then and she ran over to the neighbor's house. >> Okay. So, that was You know, I watched her that time. But this time like this This has never happened. Yeah. Not only had the toddler been left unsupervised, but she had also been left almost naked outside. The mother was asked to dress her child, but she wasn't allowed to until the investigation was complete. So, the officer took some clothes to the neighbor who dressed the girl. Yeah, there's not her pants because the diaper's probably wet. >> Okay. Um just a shirt and her shoes for right now. Okay. I can see your grandma. Yes. I can tell. All of us got 21 grandkids. >> Holy I've got Holy cow. big and small. Oh my gosh. The oldest one of mine is a graduate this year. Everything the officers had seen and heard so far pointed to grossly irresponsible parenting. The mother had neglected her child and endangered her life. And if this situation hadn't already shaken her, what the officer was about to say certainly did. Are you arresting me? I have to come up to with that conclusion. I'm just going to read your rights. Just a formality. I don't know my rights. She might hurt her. I've never been away from her like that. I can't. Like this never happened. I just Okay. But you honestly we're going to work through that together. So, just try to get through the questioning and I promise you we'll handle that. She agreed to answer questions and explained that she and her daughter had been in bed together and that she had last seen her child just before taking an afternoon nap. At that point, the mother completely lost her temper. This has never happened. I don't let her get out of my view like that. Yeah. >> [snorts] >> Okay. I don't ever let this happen. This has never happened before. I cannot lose my child. Well, we're we're not in the business of preventing a mother from being with her child. [snorts] We don't make those decisions. I can't be away from her for long. Okay. Please. Nothing like this ever happened. Well, I mean, she's all right. You're all right. So, everyone here is all right. Okay. I just [laughter] don't want to be away from my daughter like that. I don't like this never happened. If I get [laughter] arrested, I don't have any money to keep her and I don't I'm sorry, but I don't trust any man to [snorts] keep my daughter like that. I don't care. Okay. >> [laughter] >> I don't leave her with anybody unless she goes to stay here. She's always with me. I've never been away from her. Okay. The officer had gathered the information he needed to make a decision. Though it was a bitter moment for the mother, everyone must face the consequences of their actions or inactions, especially a parent. Take her out for me and put your hands behind your back. Can I call somebody to get my daughter, please? We'll work that out. Just give us 1 second, okay? Well, you can make a phone call, okay? Just give us 1 second. I'll hold your phone. Okay, what about me? I didn't even get to hug her. I know. Well, I watched you hug her. I know. For John McGlothlin. And I don't want the kid to see your handcuffs, okay? I know you want to say I Listen, get You want to see your kid, 100%. I would too, but I don't want her to see your handcuffs, okay? If you You can't walk me over there just so I can feed her, hug her, possibly? Once it's confiscated after him, I'm I'm just holding him in. Police offered to let the child stay with the neighbors, but the mother preferred to call her brother or sister to look after her daughter. The situation was sad, but there was still a moment to lighten the mood. Just before leaving for jail, the mother remembered a small detail. There's a There's There's a There's a nick in between my boobs. >> [laughter] >> I'm sorry. Uh I can have him grab it if it's more comfortable for you. It's It's just a nicotine. >> Yeah, well, if any sort of like That's Any sort of like vape or cigarettes will get thrown out at the jail. So, if you're comfortable with him grabbing it, you have a vape? Just so he can just Smells real good. Yeah, I have a vape. >> [clears throat] >> All right. Um just walk with the baby. The suspect was transported to jail, where she was charged with child neglect. Let's hope she changes her ways and that her child will be able to play safely and joyfully under her responsible care in the future. On March 7th, 2024, officers responded to a call from a concerned grandmother. She reported that her daughter was in her house with two uninvited guests taking drugs in the presence of her toddler. The suspect's friends fled in their car upon seeing the officer. Then the cop found the suspect, Chelsea, with her baby outside her mother's apartment. What's going on this morning? I left this morning to go to the Salvation. I came back from the Salvation Army and we're getting housing. I just completely fell on my probation. Okay. I'm off of all that. Okay. There's nothing going on. Okay. What happened a few minutes ago with you guys when you pulled [clears throat] out of here? When we pulled out of here? >> Yes, ma'am. In what car? There was two of my cars. The white car? Yeah. Oh, that's That his name is Lavaro. Lavaro. Which car were you in? I was in the black two-door. The black two-door? The black Volkswagen. Okay. All right. Where is that car now? What car? The black Volkswagen. He just left. He just dropped me He just dropped you off? Okay. Who's this little guy? This is Mason. Okay. What's his name? Mason. Chelsea clearly had a lot to answer for. Her condition looked troubling, but just as troubling was the company she'd been keeping and what she had been doing with them. Who was driving the black car that you left with? That is um Yeah. His name is Tim. No. Ben? Ben. Ben who? Ben uh Ben. I know how he says it and writes it, but Okay. But you don't know him? You don't know his last name? >> but Okay. How long have you known Ben? Like a month. Okay. So you've known him for 1 month and he drives a black two-door Volkswagen? Yeah, it's a Volkswagen. It's a like a four-door, but it's a a GT. Okay. Like it was a four-door. Okay. Uh who was driving the white car? Lavaro. The suspect's thoughts were coming slowly and her speech [music] was slurred. It was difficult to interview her, but the officer stayed patient and urged Chelsea to give more details about [music] what had happened. She kept doing things her own way. So, what did you do this morning? You said you went to Salvation Army? I left the Salvation Army and came home. Came home to get Aiden? Okay. And I stayed home with Aiden. I talked to Lavar and I talked to Ben. Ben said he was coming by with I got to look at my phone when I was finding the I don't know what phone it was Do you want me to try and call it? No, it's all right. Okay. So, uh Lavar and Ben, I'm going to try to get in the house. >> Okay. So, you were over here with Lavar and Ben. >> [clears throat and cough] >> Who Who left with who? Lavar's girlfriend, her name is I don't know. He's got a little girlfriend. They left together. Okay. In Lavar's white car? Yep, and then me and Ben and the baby left in Ben's car. Okay. When you guys left, >> [clears throat] >> did you follow Lavar? No, I didn't even see Lavar left before we left. >> before you guys left. Okay. Chelsea continued to answer the officer's questions about her friends, but when the officer asked to check her bag, she refused. Do you mind if I check to see help you find your phone? >> No, I don't mind if you check. Okay. I don't break any laws. I'm not I don't know. Chelsea. Listen, I know my rights, okay? I have no I have just got off of three PPOs. I'll be damned if I'm going to let an officer go through my stuff. Do you mind? Of course I mind. My friend, all y'all have ever done is lock and ticket my kids. I'll check my bags for you Lavar. You want to wait for me right here, that's fine. Chelsea. What? How long has it been since you used any I've been clean for over a week. I get tested three times a week by DCFS. How long has it been since you Since I used over a week. It's been over a week? >> Yeah. Okay. Can you stick out your tongue? You do. I just ate ice cream. >> Can you open up your mouth, stick out your tongue, okay? All right. I'm not using Chelsea DCFS Chelsea, your speech is slurred. You're not steady on your feet. You have pop marks on your tongue. You have several indicators that are consistent with somebody who's recently used. How long has it been since you used something? I told you Saturday of last week. Saturday of last week, okay. A female officer arrived. The male cop briefed her on the situation. He believed Chelsea either needed to go to jail or to the hospital. After leaving his colleague to watch the suspects, he called Travis, Chelsea's brother-in-law. Hey. Hello, is this Travis? Hey Travis, it's Officer Roberts. Saw a missed call. Yes, sir. Um my wife called me. I guess there's some situation with her sister. Do you need me to come there? I'm 15 minutes away. No, so I think so Chelsea came back, so we're speaking to her now. So, I don't think I need you to come here anymore, but her mom if we're going to have to figure out something. I think Casey's mom is going to call Casey and see if she can come. Okay, and he didn't get injured in the accident? No, so at this point it's kind of uncertain whether they were even in that car at the time, which is good. Uh yeah, I mean yeah, it's good for him. I really she just needs to be whatever, never mind. Uh okay, well I'm going to be there anyways in 15 minutes. I just don't want Casey to have to deal with all this, so I'm going to I'll I'll just talk to you here in 15 minutes. If we need to take him with us or whatever that looks like, we'll figure that out. Oh, okay, perfect. Then I'll see you guys. Then the officer called his sergeant describing Chelsea's condition as high as a kite. Meanwhile, Chelsea sat on the pavement drifting in and out of consciousness. Soon, the officer pulled her out of her daze in a way she didn't like. All right, Chelsea. The chance to bond you back. I'm going to jail? What did I do? You want to call my mom to come get the baby? >> Stand up for me. You will. Stand up. What did I do, sir? Sir. What did I do? Ma'am. I didn't do anything. Are you serious right now? My son, you can't leave my son here. My mom has to come and get him. Please. >> leaving him here by himself. But why am I going to jail? If you got her, then I'll switch with her. I can't search her though. Do you want to switch? >> Yeah, we'll switch. >> My car's right here. Get her. And Why am I going to Chelsea had every reason to go to jail. Even her own relatives thought it was the right thing to do. After all, it had been her mother who called the police in the first place. Soon, Travis arrived and he also disapproved of Chelsea's behavior. I just want to make sure like whatever like I get sick and tired of everybody trying to cut her deals like like throw the freaking book at her and send her away, please. Okay. She needs it badly. Yeah, I Look, I try to cut people breaks when I can, uh, but when I'm I'm looking at her high as a kite Can't take care of this. >> something cuz right like is not all right. I don't smell any alcohol. Well, okay, the kid's the victim. Uh, so I'm not going to I'm not going to pull any punches on this. Well, the issue is that I I I'm Trust in the system. >> known in the area and I have a lot of businesses and so it's always been put on When you meet my wife, her her is her half-sister. It's we're very different. >> Okay. Um, and so the problem is is that she's it's very hard to find a program that take uh, kids. Mhm. So she wanted to put that on Kelly, my mother-in-law. Um, but the problem is she has a full-time job and I'm not going to I I don't need another kid in my life. I've got four of my own. We also are the guardian of another kid Yeah. uh, whose parents died like I know I don't need like so we Whatever. So I'm trying to handle that delicately over the last year. Mhm. Um, but in this situation I just I I need like whatever you found, please don't cut her loose. Please. >> Yes. Deal. Okay. Deal. Travis' words said it all. The family had struggled with Chelsea's addiction for a long time. She had apparently failed multiple times to get clean. And unfortunately, she had been caught with drugs again. We found some in your bag. What are those? What? I know we're going to have to test them unless you know what it is. Pills? I don't know. I don't know what he took out of this from your bag. Oh my god. So, what was in your bag? There was some in there. What else was in Pills. Some in a powdery substance which would have been Yeah, but I don't want to go to jail for that. So, why are you carrying that stuff? And why are you doing it? I'm not doing it. So, why do you have it? Because they left it in the bag that I had dropped off. So, it's it's in your possession. The officer met with Chelsea's family. He returned her belongings to them except for the drugs found in her bag. Then he read Chelsea her rights while she sat in the patrol car, but she wasn't mentally present. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in court. Do you understand each Chelsea? I'm not saying Oh, I'm sorry. Do you understand each of these rights I'll explain them to you? Okay. And having those rights in mind, are you willing to answer a couple questions about these things? All right. I know you already told the officer that you had But look, I'm not a drug expert, and it's going to help me out. This was in your like leopard skin purse. It kind of they kind of seem like pills that are mashed up. I got to I got to see closer to that. Those were Those were blue too. No, they're white, I think. They're white. But I am a little bit color blind. They're white. What's their white? They're just um I put the logo there. Okay. And what the heck are these things? Oh, my ear plugs. Ear plugs? Yes. What about these? Those were mine. Okay. And then this was out in your backpack. There's powder in it. There is there's powder in it? No, it Well, what was in it? Um it's cereal in the ball that I use. Okay. Orange juice in the ball. Chelsea was taken to jail. She was charged with child neglect and possession of a controlled substance. On June 20th, 2025 in Luna County, New Mexico, officers responded to a call regarding a 6-year-old girl. The child was reportedly left alone in a shed in the middle of nowhere and was likely in serious physical condition. Soon, police arrived at the isolated property where they found the girl locked in. Sheriff's office, anybody here? Is anybody here? Sheriff's office. Anybody here? I'm here. Where? I'm here. In the shed? Yes, I can see you from the back through this window. Where at? Oh, hi. Hi. Are you okay? Yes. Who else is there with you? No one. How old are you? Six. Six? Yes. Where are your parents at? Uh, are you able to come over here? How do you open it? The hole? Here? Deputy Olivas offered to call the child's parents, but it turned out they had left no way to contact them. An elderly man had alerted the police about the locked-up child and had also shared disturbing details about her condition. Well, was there a man here earlier? He said he had bruises. Do you have any bruises? Uh. How did that happen? The ground? You fell? Okay. I'm just concerned cuz you're here by yourself. You're not supposed to be by yourself, you know that, right? Okay. Um. Do you have air conditioning in there? Do you have water? No, is it hot in there? It is? Okay. I'm going to see what I can do to help you, okay? It turned out the child had been locked inside the shed for 26 hours. During that time, with no air conditioning, temperatures inside had exceeded 100° F. The horrible conditions didn't end [music] there. Do you need anything? Are you thirsty? You are? Do you have water in there or no? No. Do you have food? Are you hungry? I'll see what I can do to get you food and water, okay? How long have you been alone? Mhm, what would you say like maybe like an hour or more? A little bit? Deputy Olivas called for backup, which soon arrived. The officers inspected the structure looking for a way to get inside. Eventually, they removed the siding from the exterior wall and reached the shed. Who are you? Right there? Hi. Deputy Olivas, Luna County. Come on out. Anybody else there? No, just you? All right, come on out. You okay? You guys, come on, take her out. >> Let's see if we can just take her over there. Get her out of here, it's kind of stuffy. The girl was taken to the ambulance that had just arrived. The cops quickly realized that the inside of the shed was not only hot, but also filthy. Nothing, however, could top the sight of the place where her parents had kept her locked. Even the seasoned deputies were shocked. You have a flashlight just so we can document the conditions. This is This is where she had her? It's poop bucket. poop bucket >> [snorts] >> Just like uh >> [music] >> let it up here. It's okay. There's like a mattress and stuff like that so No pillows, no nothing. There's no running water, nothing hot in here. The shock didn't end with the inspection of the shed. Soon they discovered another room where the living conditions were just as appalling. More disturbing still is the fact that the parents have been raising their younger child there. Sheriff's office. Okay. Cuz I know they have another kid. Yes, sir. She said that uh they booked her. She said she has a little sister. Yeah, we might as well get the living conditions of this area, too. Yeah. Looks like this is where they have the baby. It's hot in here. It's ridiculous. Yeah, it's It's ridiculous, man. The officers needed fresh air after spending barely 10 minutes in the suffocating den. So, just imagine what the girl went through in the past 26 hours. Soon they were informed of the girl's medical results. It turned out the poor child had serious injuries. She's got a good gash on her head. She said she fell yesterday. She didn't say how or nothing. She just said she fell. She has a pretty good gash. Um I told them what how we got called out here and Nate said that one of her pupils is bigger than the other. So, he's I guess that was the question. Yeah, probably. He asked her if she got real tired after and she said, "Yeah." Yeah. How long did she fell from? >> And then she has a on her leg. And then on her leg she has significant bruising, like swelling. Um around on her shin about right here and a good scrape. She said that happened during the fall too. Well, did you see the living conditions? >> Yeah. Well, they have her bed up top. I don't know. I'm not sure she fell or something. Uh or it could have hit her too. The officers decided to take the girl to the hospital to make sure her condition was under control. Then, suddenly, the child's mother finally came home. Despite what she's clearly done, she still acted dumb. I will speak to her after we try to knock on the door for you. >> at least wait for my husband to get here? He'll be here in a few minutes to take my baby. Put your hands >> Please. Put your hands behind your back. Can we just please wait for my husband to get here? Just so Just so he could get her. Please. >> Okay, no. We're going to take care of her, okay? Please. What is going on? >> I'll explain to you here in a bit. Well, what is going on? What is 377, we're going to have 41 and they're investigating. Go get the wallet for me. Or the car. What's going on? Do you have anything on your LITTLE STICKER? OH. 377, 40 COPY 28 out of New Mexico. What's going on? Put your right here. Uh probably receipt. You're more than welcome to What is Go in the Go in the back of your truck, okay? The mother was handcuffed and taken for questioning. But the officers had more work to do. In the back seat of the car, Deputy Alivas discovered the family's younger child. The officers immediately took care of him. Hi. Hi. How are you? How are you? Oh. He's supposed to be walking. He's going to be walking? >> Yeah, that's what she said. How are you? I'm going to move her to your truck just so the air cuz it's hot. You want to come with me? You want to come with me? Come on. Oh, it's okay. It's okay. It's okay. Come on. You want to go with Mommy? Come on. Oh, you Oh my goodness. Come on, buddy. Oh my goodness. Only one family member remained [music] missing, the father, who had created these disturbing living conditions for his kids. He had been walking home for a long time, but soon he appeared on the horizon. All right, I'm Deputy Leal with the County Sheriff's Office. I'll explain more to you here in a bit, okay? Okay. You have any real quick, you have any weapons on you? No, I don't. You have any guns, knives? No. No? No. Any syringes, nothing like that? Nothing. No? Okay, do me a favor, just put your hands behind your back, okay? Yes. Okay. So, as of right now, you're not under arrest, you're just under a detainment, okay? What's going on? We'll explain to you more in a bit, okay? All right. I think you need to fix right there. No, no. Like uh Just leave it all right. There you go. What's what's what's the problem? We'll explain to you more in a bit, okay? Right now, we can't really say much. We'll explain to you more in a bit, okay? All right. Okay. All right. So, [music] you follow me this way? Okay. What's what's going on? Tell me. Uh I'll I'll I'll I'll explain to you more in a bit, okay? Right now, I can't really tell you much. >> honest with me. No, I will. I will. Uh that's why, you know, I have a detective right here and she'll talk to you. Like the mother, the father seemed confused about what was happening. Apparently, leaving his daughter for more than 24 hours without food and water in 100° heat was nothing unusual for him. When he saw his younger child with the deputies, he became emotional. And we'll go through all that. You have no right to take my baby. What What are you doing with my baby, man? We're just making sure she's okay. She's okay. She's been with us. Yeah, I know. We're just you know, we're just you know, your wife's there with us right now, too. So, we're just looking after >> girl right there. No, ain't nothing's going to happen to her, okay? Sir, No, is there is there a is there a Do it cuz I'll shoot somebody. >> Is there a a way to open this gate or something like that? >> ain't. And I'm not going to open it. Okay. Are you able to crawl through here? Yeah, I can crawl through. Okay. But uh Yeah, hold on. I'm going to >> Yeah, you go go ahead. Hey, man, you ain't taking my girl. Okay, ready? >> You ain't taking my girl. I don't care. I will sue your ass. Go down and I'll see you from there. I'd like to file harassment charges. Okay. Can you go down and I'll see you from there? Can I have some water? Uh yeah, I'll see what I can do, okay? Asking for water in the desert heat is understandable. But when you've deprived your child of water for more than 24 hours and locked her in a hot shed, you don't deserve to demand water for yourself. Still, the father kept insisting. I don't know what's going on here, but I feel like you know, Uh uh we'll we'll get to that, okay? I appreciate the water, too. So, I don't have water with me right here, okay? >> It's a long ways over here. Okay. Okay. Okay. I'm thirsty. Help me. I haven't done nothing. I haven't done nothing. Leave. I don't know what what's happening now. The real problems were just beginning for the father. He and his wife were both charged with child abuse and are awaiting trial. Fortunately, both children were placed in the custody of the state's children, youth, and families department. Let's hope a better future awaits them than the one their parents were leading them to. On March 3rd, 2025, officers responded to a call about a woman committing a hit-and-run. She had allegedly struck her baby's father's car and left. All this happened while her baby was in the car with her. The same evening, officers arrived at Alyssa's address and encountered her there. Hello. I'm Deputy Morales, Contra Costa Sheriff's Office. Looking for Alyssa. Can you guys come in the garage? Sure. So, uh, we're here because of an accident. Okay. Could you tell me what happened? Uh, I bumped into my baby daddy and he sped away. Okay. So, did you ever call in to report it or No, I didn't because he just sped away. Okay. >> he wasn't calling either because why would you drive away? Okay. So, you were you were just not going to report it earlier as I expected and then report it. I was going to call I was going to go to the Sheriff's everything in the morning, but I just dealt with today. Okay. It was a lot more than What happened What happened today? We just swore in court, so I just I had to go to the courthouse in the morning and I was just going to go to the Sheriff's Office while I was there and Okay. report you guys don't stop. Bye. Okay. >> I'm like, I'm out here I was Very good. What was it Was that the vehicle you were driving? >> That was the vehicle you were driving? Yeah, I literally barely tapped him. It was a stop sign. My car just stopped itself anyway. It's like it's a brand new car. Okay. Alyssa had indeed struck the man's car, but her aggression didn't stop there. According to her, she had only {quote} unquote "barely tapped him." But police knew she had also been harassing him with text messages. What's going on with the text messages? Which text messages? Text messages you sent to him? Yeah, which ones? Uh, which ones What Do you want to show me which ones? >> That's what I'm going to go look at and see which >> No, there was just a bunch of them that There's a bunch of them that you mentioned that you were going to hit him at the next stop sign. I can't say I did say that. You did say that? It looks like it. Okay. All right. Um I bumped into him at the next stop, so I'm Alyssa had done a lot of foolish things in a short time. She might not have been getting along with her baby's father, but that didn't give her the right to endanger his life or her child's. The officer decided to be direct and tell her what was coming next. But that's when her tantrum began. All right, I'm going to be straight up with you. You did a hit-and-run. There was a child inside. [music] Um you're going to get hooked for uh No, my daughter's upset. Hold on. I got to Okay, I'm not going to Okay, I won't go anywhere. That's why I'm upset. Okay. Okay. We will work on that. No, I need to call my mom, so We'll call her right now. You're just going to be placed in custody, okay? Okay, that's fine. Can I just call my mom? Yeah. Yeah, but listen, I'm not We're on speaker. No, you guys don't do that. We're No. We're on speaker. No. You don't got to be all rough with me. I'm not I'm not. I am not. I am not. Okay. We'll call her right now. We'll call her right now, okay? She's not going I'm going to go. We'll call her right now. Officers helped Alyssa call her mother, putting the phone on speaker. Meanwhile, her hysteria escalated quickly. >> [music] >> She started freaking out and repeatedly mentioning her medications. Figure out what we're not leaving in Okay, I I need to go take my medicine before we leave. Okay, we'll get Well, No, you need to No, please. OKAY, WE'LL WE'LL WE'LL WHAT'S YOUR MEDICINE? Hold on. What's your medicine? >> [laughter] >> I can't go to jail like that. I need to crash out, dude. Please let me Please, Mom. Mom, I just be on the way. What's your medicine? What's your medicine? I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm I'm worried, please. What's your medicine? Hang up the phone, please. You can hang up. What's your medicine? I need Sorry, just need to hold I need to I need to go take it out of my purse before we leave. I cannot >> [laughter] >> No, dude, no. I'm going to freak out. You have You have prescriptions? You have a prescription? Yes, I have PTSD and I have PTSD from jail and from the cops. Please, dude, no. Please. >> [laughter] >> Please. We'll take a seat. We'll take a seat somewhere. You want to take a seat? Sit Sit right on the edge. Sit on the edge. No, [laughter] dude. I literally I'm going to freak out. I'm going to freak out. No. I need you to let me a hand go.
