Take this off, please. >> Holy. She kicked me in the ball. She kicked me in my leg. She kicked him. She bit Nick. That's four felonies. >> After officers finally gain control of the suspect, she and her baby are transported to the hospital for medical clearance. An officer still at the scene now is able to speak with the witness to find out exactly what he saw that started all of this. >> At about 4:50, 5:00, I was going on a walk in the neighborhood and as I was coming around uh that side, I noticed a silver SUV coming in from the resident side of the gate. And as they came through the gate, they accelerated way above the the 15 mph speed limit. Kind of looked the other way as she was coming around the curve. And then I hear tires squealing as she's coming around the the turn over here. Um I noticed that the car approached the parking space uh aggressively immediately put her hazards on. Um at that point, I just figured, okay, I'm going to go inside my house. went inside the house for about an hour, left to go to Sprouts on Atlantic Avenue, and I noticed that the car's hazards were still on. >> Was it in the same Now, do you do you see the vehicle currently right now? >> Yes, the Maza. >> Okay. The Maza over there. Uh, is when you saw it pull in, did it ever leave that spot? >> So, she didn't start in that spot. >> She didn't start in that spot. >> No, she was double parked. I'll walk with you. >> No, it's fine. Just just from right here. It's fine. >> Do you see where that black Chevy is? >> She was double parked next to that black Chevy. >> Black Chevy. You mean the Camaro over there? >> The Camaro. >> Okay. Further down. Okay. She was double parked there >> and the the hazards were still on. >> So that's where you saw when you walked in and then when you walked out, where did you see the Mazda then? >> No. When I was leaving the neighborhood, I'm sorry. When I was leaving to go to Sprouts, she was still double parked next to that Camaro. >> Okay. Um, >> do you have any reason on why the vehicle would be here now? >> No clue. >> No clue. I thought it was odd that the hazards were still on and nobody left the car. So, I figured I'd call non-emergency services and I thought she was having a medical episode, like could have had a seizure or something. >> And you saw her in the vehicle? >> Yes. >> Okay. When you went to go leave to Sprouts, it was 6:00 p.m. >> I can tell you real quick. Okay. So, it was closer to 5:45 when I left. >> Okay. 5:45 when >> as opposed to 6:00. When I was heading to Sprouts, I called uh non-emergency services and just recommended maybe an EMT or like fire rescue can come out and check on her. It's just not normal to sit in your car with your hazards on. Did you see anyone get out of the vehicle at any point in time when you were looking at the vehicle? >> No, not once. >> This suspect, Monica, was charged with four counts of felony battery on a law enforcement officer, felony resisting with violence, resisting without violence, felony child neglect, and felony child abuse. Court records indicate the charges of resisting without violence, child neglect, [music] child abuse, and two of the battery charges were dropped. She has since pleaded not guilty to the remaining two battery charges and resisting with violence. As her case is still ongoing, she's presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. I used to say to myself, with every well-being check call, I hope this is not the one that leaves me in shock. Police answer thousands of these calls every year. People passed out, confused, off their meds. God only knows. But for every minute you delay in a hot car, a child's brain is literally cooking. Now, picture this mother's mindset. Not protective, not locked in on that child's safety because she knows that baby's in that car. And still, her focus is drifting and wrapped up in herself instead of her kid on the floor. When the officers step in and authorities in her space, she's unable to answer simple questions. Instead of switching into mom mode, she shifts into fight mode. Not because she's protecting her child, it's because she's protecting her warp version of the events. So, in a situation like this, when officers give commands, it's not just about control, it's about stabilizing a scene that's already way past safe. Remember, every second these officers are wrestling with her is a second that child is still vulnerable. And that's what makes these calls so dangerous because a distraction from the real victim. We lose kids in hot cars every single year in this country. Dozens of them. And most of the time, it's not monsters. It's overwhelmed or irresponsible adults who thought it'll be fine, but it never is. When you see officers getting firm and possibly getting physical, understand what's driving that urgency. It's not just anger. It's also the clock. Because while people like this woman act like this, a child's body doesn't get a second
