The mother, who was pregnant at the time, was rushed into emergency surgery as doctors fought to save her life. But despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after midnight, turning an already devastating crash into an even greater tragedy for the family. >> So, I'm assuming he blew the light. >> Yeah. According to investigators, Smith had multiple opportunities to stop and avoid what happened next. Instead, he allegedly pushed his SUV to nearly 93 mph, weaving through traffic as officers backed off due to safety concerns. Moments later, he entered a busy intersection against a red light and triggered a collision that would leave one woman dead. her unborn child lost and an entire family forever changed. >> Sounds like initially probable cause unless you think there's a problem with that. >> No, no, no. As officers assessed the aftermath of the crash, they told him that someone may have been. According to investigators, Smith responded, "My bad." and repeatedly asked officers about the condition of his dog that had been inside the vehicle. He was later transported to a local hospital where officers obtained a court- authorized blood sample as part of the investigation. Subsequent toxicology testing found no alcohol or drugs in his system. >> I mean, thinking of going back to that night. There's no drugs in the car. There's no guns in the car. You don't have any alcohol on you. You don't even know that the the car has no insurance. >> When the case finally reached Mcome County Circuit Court, the judge was visibly shaken and deeply appalled. The court watched the horror unfold, learning that 31-year-old Faith GMA and her unborn child were and her husband was left permanently paralyzed. >> Okay, I know 16-year-old boys are dumb. I guess when that argument no longer goes anywhere. When you wipe out a family, you literally wipe out a family. >> With the legal process coming to a close in July 2025, Travian Smith finally faced the true cost of his catastrophic flight. The court handed down a crushing sentence, 25 to 50 years for seconddegree murder alongside maximum terms for a grossly negligent miscarriage, felony fleeing and eluding, and two counts of reckless driving.
