why once again why are you out here facing people after they said looking like you excessive force against black people that's why I can quit now because y'all can advance [Applause] [Music] thank you so today is a very special day today is my birthday well it's not my birthday necessarily but it's the birthday for Columbus Police body camera on YouTube I uploaded my first video on July 2nd 2020 and if I plan this just right the footage that you'll be watching in the background is actually the footage from my very first video when I released my first video I really didn't know what I was doing so I only released about two and a half minutes of footage from a recording that was a little more than an hour honestly I was still learning how to use my editing software and I just wanted to get something out as soon as I could so as a little birthday gift to you once I'm done with this opening monologue I'll be playing the rest of the footage from that very first video so you get to see the longer version basically without edits if you could bear with me for a moment I'd like to tell you the complete history of this YouTube channel and my intent behind creating it if you remember back to the summer of 2020 it was quite a tumultuous time out in the state of Minnesota in a small town called Minneapolis a police officer named Derek Chauvin arrested a man named George Floyd and during that arrest knelt on Mr Floyd's back causing his death The Death of George Floyd caused a lot of people to believe it was okay to burn down our cities and block traffic and loot retail stores the city of Columbus Ohio was no exception I was downtown in Columbus on the night of May 28 2020 I watched groups of writers throw rocks at police officers I watched as Ryder smashed the windows of the Ohio State Capitol building and rushed in I also watched as rioters broke into the historic Palace Theater and lit it on fire I then watched something happen that I still find hard to believe the Mayor of Columbus Andrew Ginther turned on the officers who were trying to protect his City he started a persistent and unrelenting assault on the character of their these officers without cause the mayor accused the officers of mistreating the rioters who were trying to destroy his City he then issued an order to the police department and to the leadership of the department Banning them from speaking publicly about the riots he literally started attacking the police department and refused to let them defend himself the Department's Facebook Twitter and YouTube channels went silent for weeks the only information the department was allowed to post publicly was stuff that came directly from the mayor's office he even made the department post a statement written by his staff stating that the mayor never ordered the department to stop posting on social media I remember distinctly the day I decided to start this YouTube channel I responded to a call of a shooting I arrived on scene with a bunch of other officers to a shooting that occurred in a drug house on the city's West Side the drug addicts in the house dragged the victim out to the alley and left him for dead he was shot in the chest and had what is known as a sucking chest wound the officers who responded to the scene applied a chest seal to the victim and helped stabilize him while they waited for Medics to arrive just before transporting the victim to a hospital one of the Medics sought out the sergeant on scene and said your guys saved this man's life if you waited for us to arrive he would have died that Sergeant was very proud of the men who work for him and thought their their actions reflected well on the division of police the sergeant thought it might be a good idea to post the video of the incident on the division's social media accounts this Sergeant's request was denied the sergeant was told that anything that put the department in a positive light was being denied by the mayor's office that was the night I decided to create this YouTube channel and the topics I cover were taken directly from the rhetoric of the anti-police activists they say that police officers have been treating rioters unfairly well here are a bunch of videos showing what the police have been up against during these riots they say that the police don't know how to handle people with mental illness well here's a bunch of videos showing officers handling people with mental illness with the utmost respect and professionalism they say that officers treat drug addicts and prostitutes like garbage well here are a bunch of videos showing officers going above and beyond to make those people feel like they have value I'm very proud of the work I've done with this channel I believe I've had a significant hand in forming public opinion about the Columbus Division of police I feel like I've succeeded in a large degree to rebuild the trust between the police department and the community the same trust that mayor Andrew Ginther put a lot of effort into destroying how much longer will I do this I don't know but I don't plan on stopping anytime soon [Music] [Music] yesterday I'm not saying
