Hey guys, I'm about to leave for a ruck, but real quick, I wanted to um address a topic that I've been getting a lot of questions on recently, that is back pay. You know, when a police officer or a public servant or somebody is fired, they get their job back and often they are rewarded back. And what does that mean? A lot of people think that that means that if you were owed, like I was gone for almost eight months, so I think the the department owes me like $72,000, something in that ballpark. I'm not I haven't added it up myself. So, a lot of people think, well, you were gone for 8 months. You should get a check for $72,000. That's not true. That's not how it works. Um, the the back pay award is actually a makehole remedy. So, what that means is that if you worked or you earned income while you were unemployed, in order to make you whole, they owe you the difference between what you made while you're unemployed and what you would have made had you been employed. Uh, so if I made for instance $10,000 and I was owed $72,000, then the difference is 60,000 $62,000, right? Um, I made a little bit more than that. So, the offset is a little bit different. The other thing to consider is that uh for at least for my job, we get to bank all of our holiday and vacation hours that we don't use. So, my vacation bank had um a little over 300 hours. Uh and then my sick bank had somewhere around 300 hours in it as well. Uh when you are separated from service, they have to pay you for all of that time. So I received my final paycheck was um a paycheck that included uh 300 hours of sick and then 300 hours of vacation. They don't pay you hour for hour for those, but that's a topic for another day. when you go back to work, um if you want to go back to work with any time in your banks, uh so you have the ability to take any vacation time, uh you need to buy that time back. Uh so if I want to buy my 300 hours of vacation time back, then I'm going to have to pay back basically what they paid me on my final paycheck. uh when you take into account the offset, so offsetting what I earned from what they owe me and then my um vacation time that I want to buy back. Um I haven't run the numbers, but I don't think I'm going to come out in the green or in the black by very much. Uh I the way I'm looking at it, I'll be happy if I can come out of this dead even. uh you know, if my back pay award offset is enough to buy back the amount of vacation time that I had when I was fired, that's basically what I'm expecting. So, I don't think a lot of people knew that information. Uh that's what I'm here for. Talk to you later.
