July 22nd, 2022. Key West, Florida. Just before 11:30 p.m., a Key West police officer spotted a silver Hyundai Elantra struggling down Atlantic Boulevard. One of its tires had blown out, sending smoke into the night as the vehicle continued forward. It looked like a routine traffic stop, but the moment officers approached the driver, they knew something was off. The man behind the wheel was shirtless, visibly intoxicated, and behaving erratically. As officers began asking questions, the situation grew stranger by the minute. What started as a simple stop for a damaged vehicle was quickly turning into something far more unusual. >> You okay? >> Yes, sir. I'm drunk. >> Take a seat. >> Did you get him? I'll be right over there. >> 10-4. >> 6-4, driver's covered in blood. Looks like it's going to be a signal three. >> 10-4, you need rescue? >> 10-4. >> Yo, get off the phone. What she told them immediately raised concerns. The vehicle was typically driven by her mother, 46-year-old Laetitia Alston, but no one had heard from her for hours. Calls were going unanswered and her whereabouts were unknown. Concerned for her safety, family members made their way to an apartment on Suncrest Road in Stock Island, hoping to find answers. Instead, they were about to walk into a scene that would leave them horrified. >> No. >> She's not She's bleeding. She's covered in blood. She's uh >> Okay. >> She's not responding. She's swollen. >> Where is she? >> She's on the floor in the house. >> Okay. Is there anyone in the house? >> Yes, my my mom. >> I know. Come over here. Hey, go get the You got a bag in your car? >> The victim was identified as 46-year-old Laetitia Alston. Investigators say Alston suffered extensive blunt force trauma during a violent attack inside the apartment. According to the medical examiner, she died from multiple injuries to her head and neck and her death was officially ruled a homicide. What had happened in the hours leading up to her death would soon become the focus of a major investigation. >> Yeah, no, she's right here. Right here. Huh? What? >> Okay. >> She don't need to Her heart is beating. >> Were you here, too? >> No, that's Kasey. We got to move Nobody was here. I just We got to move the ambulance right there. I don't know. So I said, "Well, let me go cuz they said they arrested her boyfriend earlier." >> Who's her boyfriend? >> Um Dalman. >> So who's house is this? >> Well, Dalman. She lives used to live there with him like but >> So that's the boyfriend's house? >> Yeah, Dalman. I don't even know his last name right now. Dalman. And like I I I said they arrested him earlier. So I I said, "Well, let me go over cuz she wasn't answering my phone." So I said, "Let me go over there and check on her." And then she's like like like laying out The door was open so I went in there and it's like she's just laying there like full of blood and like >> ground? And then when they my my my daughter and my granddaughter's boyfriend went in there and she went in there and said said she's breathing. I said can you tell me if she's breathing? I don't know. >> Can you find your ID for me and just give it to the other officer whenever you get a chance and just hang tight, okay? Investigators quickly identified Delman Washington as a person of interest and began trying to track him down. What they didn't realize was that at that very moment another police investigation had already crossed paths with the man they were looking for. >> Get my hat. Get my hat. >> We'll get your hat. We'll get your hat. I'm going to get your hat. We'll get your hat. Okay. >> I'm the boss. Take me to the county jail. >> Okay. >> Take me to the county jail. >> Yeah, all right. >> All you pink people. You pink. You pink. You pink. You pink. You need a [ __ ] way to heaven. Thank you. >> You ass [ __ ] I don't give a [ __ ] I Why y'all arresting me? Why y'all arresting me? >> Disorderly conduct. Not in the wall I just found the ID. I didn't go >> The dollar I just pulled out of his pocket is covered in blood, too. >> Yeah, that. >> A woman's earring in his in his pocket. >> Whose car is this? >> It's got She lives at Ocean Walk. >> So >> Wasn't there a Hold on. Wasn't there I remember a call that just came out and might have been somewhere else, but it was for a male and a female in a fight. And the male was trying to leave. That was Okay. >> That was downtown. Um that was at Steam Plant Condos, but there's a >> Oh, that's right. She lives there. A shipyard. >> You went through the wallet. >> I didn't go through the wallet. No, I just found the ID. There's a woman's purse in the back. Um >> I want to see if there's like Can one of y'all or or can you and Hal do a welfare check on the RO's address? Is it a woman that's the RO? >> Yeah. >> South as well? >> Yeah. >> Ocean Walk Apartments. >> Tags in the call. Yeah, 3920. >> Yeah, let's do a welfare check so that way if she is that way at least get one side of the story and we know what happened to It's not a call that comes in tomorrow >> Yeah, yeah, yeah. >> during the daytime and we don't get, you know, shafted for not following up and doing due diligence. Support group Oh, look. Hang on. Anchors away. He's got AA. Um last thing is 78 Um So clearly he's got an alcohol issue. Or it's court-ordered, one of the other. All right, I'll leave y'all to it. Um if you do get something at the house over there, you I'm thinking the dollar bills just cuz like >> Yeah, that's enough to go and talk to her at least, minimal. >> Well, he's playing and it doesn't look like any of the blood's his. >> No, it's all dried up on his >> He may have a cut on his arm. >> Yeah, it's kind of hard to tell. Do you have a wipe? Cuz my bare arm was touching his >> bare arm. One of these right here? >> Yep. >> I don't believe so. You want to check? >> It's kind of propped open. >> That would be scary. >> That's what I was going back online. >> Yeah. >> It kind of looks like it had been damaged though cuz it's got >> Rear end hits. >> You might have to hit it from the inside. Looks like an older Can you look at it through the side right there? >> Yeah. Okay. >> Nothing there. This is a quick glimpse. It's one way to do a quick peek. >> Well. >> All right. >> Following the traffic stop, Delman Washington was arrested on DUI and other related charges. At the time, officers had no idea they were dealing with a potential homicide suspect. >> Here you go. >> His face is blood all over it. His arms are blood all over it. He's wearing no shirt. He's all sweaty. >> He used to beat him up all the time. >> Yeah, he's drunk, right? So, we start talking to >> Yeah. >> No, nothing. There's a person in the back seat. It's open. So, we're like, "You know, this is kind of weird." We run the car and it comes back to a Tamia. Tamia is the daughter of Latisha. Yeah. That's the daughter. So, we call We're like, "Okay, well, where's the address is?" So, apartments to the address attached to the car. We go there and no one can get a hold of Latisha, which is obviously her daughter. >> That guy used to beat him up all the time. >> That's what he's saying right now. That's what he tells us. Like, yeah, these 8 years of domestic, 8 years of domestic. So, we come here because this is an address that Washington had been arrested from before through our RMS. We come here. Uh he was with us. We come here knocking all over. I talked to this resident here who says, "Yeah, he He's a black guy does live here. He doesn't know where. It's somewhere over here." Okay. I talked to a resident over here in that open door. I'm sorry, in this closed door. I talked to a resident. That open door, we were upstairs in that renovation apartment or whatever. >> Okay. So, they gave you a wrong a wrong unit or something? >> No, they didn't give us any unit. They just said 5135. >> So you guys weren't here previously? Okay. >> Yes, we were here previously. So yeah, so we were here. The only two apartments that I made entry into were this renovation cuz the door was open. Like not this outside door, the actual interior door was open. So we made entry just to do a quick sweep. No one was there. Turn my damage everywhere. You're going to fall through it. Nothing was there. The backside, we knocked on the door and the door pushed in. As we walked in there, look, I swept the backside door. Nothing's in there. No pictures match who we were looking for at all. So I backed out and shut and locked the door cuz it was open when I pushed it. The only doors we didn't get into were this bottom door there. Obviously and then the backside were the only doors we didn't get into and that's there's a reason we didn't get into them because that's obviously why. He had shoes on. But he had blood on the bottom of his feet. Um when they took his shoes off at the jail, he had blood on the undersides of his nails. Um along with two scratches on one of his hands. Um but he has no other injuries. Two small scratches here. Like I said, his face is covered in blood. His arms are covered in blood. His stomach's covered in blood. The bottoms of his feet are covered in blood. He didn't have a shirt on. We have Arnold's holding the car right now, so it's locked down. >> Mhm. >> You guys brought him. He's at the jail. He's just He's there for other charges and then we kind of were talking about it as everything was playing out and we needed to This needs to be dug into a lot farther. So but he's at the jail now on other stuff and that's where he's being held. They're stopping doing everything. They're just holding him. So he's just sitting up there. He's in a chair. So they haven't bathed him. They haven't collected anything from him. >> They haven't Okay, perfect. >> All the evidence as far as his chain that had blood on it. All that We collected all of that. It's it's in a bag right now. We brought it. It's all separated and we have it all. >> Let me call Let me call the jail and ensure that they don't they don't clean him. >> Yeah, yeah. >> Yeah. >> You got a stapler? >> Yeah. >> Well, here. I can do one better. >> Well, call him. Let me talk to him. >> 64 from 67. What are you guys arresting him for? Disorderly conduct and DUI. Hit and run. On his feet. Uh blood on his bare stomach. He had blood on underneath his fingernails. >> As detectives pieced together the evidence, Delman Washington emerged as the primary suspect in Laetitia Alston's Investigators linked him to the crime through physical evidence, witness statements, and the circumstances surrounding his arrest. Washington was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and remained in custody as the case moved through the court system. The victim, 46-year-old Laetitia Alston, died from multiple blunt force injuries to the head and neck. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide. In February 2026, a jury found Delman Washington guilty of second-degree murder. One month later, he was sentenced to life in prison, bringing a measure of justice for Laetitia and her family.
