I'm sure it'll be in and talk to you here shortly, boss. >> Reports indicate the suspect refused to identify himself, prompting officers to obtain fingerprints and conduct gunshot residue tests. Though this is a usual process, it is vital to confirm his identity. >> We're going to treat you like a gentleman, and we'll treat you like one. He He kicked me in my hand. You understand? Let's get out of here. >> The suspect, held without bond, allegedly remained unruly, resulting in this initial mugshot. During the incident, Sergeant McDonald was struck twice. One bullet reportedly struck his elbow, shattering it, and another traveled through his left buttock and into his right hip. While on scene, one bullet remained lodged in his body. He recovered, but was unable to return to full duty for the next 10 months. Days later, officers identified the suspect as 33-year-old Jamal Brooks, a man with a reportedly lengthy and dangerous criminal history. In a 2015 dispute over parking, he allegedly pointed a gun at a neighbor's head and shot a car. That case was dropped due to the victim not showing up to court. Two weeks after that, he robbed a man at gunpoint while wearing a ski mask. That case was also dropped after the victim decided to not press charges. Within a month, Jamal was charged with firearm possession without a license, retail theft, conspiracy, and false identification outside a Walmart. He was convicted, sentenced to 1 year of probation, and became ineligible to possess firearms. Despite the firearms ban, Jamal and an accomplice allegedly knocked a woman unconscious, held a gun to her head, and fired three shots when her husband arrived. That case led to a search of Jamal's car and home, where officers uncovered an AR-15 style rifle, multiple handguns, and a 50-round drum magazine, all of which were allegedly unsecured in a home with children. For that case, he pleaded to one firearm possession charge and received a 2-year prison sentence with probation, which he violated in 2019 by possessing a firearm and marijuana, adding two more years to probation. By the time of the Crumbl Cookie robbery, Jamal seemingly completed his previous sentences. However, according to the US Attorney's Office, investigators later linked him to multiple violent armed robberies and carjackings over the prior year. These incidents were processed simultaneously, resulting in a total of 18 counts between federal and state courts. Charges included attempted homicide, assault of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, and multiple firearm charges. At least two of Jamal's charges, assault of a law enforcement officer and attempted homicide, were handled in Pennsylvania courts and were processed first. Jamal represented himself, claiming mistaken identity and challenging Sergeant McDonald's ability to identify him at night. He later exited the courtroom during McDonald's testimony, reportedly flipping off McDonald and other officers as he left. For his case in Pennsylvania courts, Jamal was convicted and sentenced to a total of 35 to 70 years in prison. In Pennsylvania's ranged sentencing system, request for parole is possible after the minimum number of years is met, in this case, 35. However, this sentence does not include his potential convictions from his federal charges. If federally convicted, [music] he faces a minimum of 63 years in prison. The outcome of his federal case is not yet available. We followed this case for more than 2 years, and it's the first time we've ever obtained footage from Pennsylvania. Getting cases like this costs several thousand dollars. To our subscribers and paying members, thank you for making this possible.
